Stop mocking judiciary over Daily Times, Stop mocking... Continued from page 1 In a statement on Thursday which was signed by the Managing Editor of Daily Times newspaper, Bonaventure Melah, Folio said the current suit filed by the Police and on which ground the fake news was being bandied around, is about the 15th of its kind that Sen Ikechukwu Obiora had instigated the Police to initiate against Folio and its management, all of which he said fell flat on their belly before the courts because they are not only baseless but also lack merit. The statement reads in part, “This case is not the first, not the second, not the third but about the 15th different cases Ikechukwu Obiora has instigated the Police to institute against Folio Communications Plc on Daily Times. They have gone from High Court to Magistrates’ Court, back to High Court and to Magistrates’ Court. Today, they will run to the Federal High Court, tomorrow, they will run to FCT High Court and then to Magistrates’ Court in Mpape, a suburb of Abuja and to Magistrates’ Court in Igbosere, Lagos, all in bare-face contempt and disrespect for both the judiciary and mockery of the respected legal profession. “This same case has gone to the Court of Appeal where in 2010 the Court of Appeal ruled that the matter was purely civil with the no criminal ingredients. Inspectors General of Police have investigated the case severally and put it in black
and white that it is a civil case of ownership. But, Ikechukwu Obiora, finding a willing ally in the current IGP has been using the Police to intimidate Folio and its management.” According to the statement, it was laughable that Keyamo and his client Ikechukwu Obiora, both of who are lawyers are circulating court papers (in sub judus) alleging that Folio bought Daily Times with forged documents, wondering what sale of asset by government has to do with documents. Folio also cautioned Keyamo not to resort to his usual antics of applying media trial in cases pending in courts, adding that it will not be business as usual for him in the matter involving Folio and Daily Times. It said, “Our initial reaction to the information that court papers are being circulated as news, was a very long laugh. However, because the main characters in this funny drama are lawyers who should know, it therefore became necessary to react to it. “In the first place, privatisation is different from commercialisation. Federal Government of Nigeria through the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE) advertised to sell Daily Times. Folio, like many other companies bided to acquire Daily Times and after very rigorous but transparent process, Folio emerged the preferred bidder. Folio went ahead to fully paid for Daily Times and the government duly handed over the company
to Folio. “Privatisation is about offer, acceptance and payment. It is not commercialisation where conditions are stated. Privatisation is buying and selling. Government advertised, Folio bided and won and went ahead to pay in full the value of the transaction. What has forging of documents got to do with the business? Who forged document and for what? Or are they saying that the money Folio paid and which government received was fake or forged money? “The next question is who is alleging forgery on the transaction? Is it the Police or the BPE that advertised, supervised the process of bidding, declared Folio as the preferred bidder, accepted the money paid and handed over Daily Times to Folio? What is the interest of the Police that is being used to institute criminal charges against Folio and its management when BPE that conducted the sale and handed over Daily Times to Folio is there and has never complained about the transaction?” “Finally, we wish to advise Barrister Festus Keyamo not to resort to his usual antics of drama and media trial in this case which has lasted for 14 years before he was drafted in. If Keyamo decides to dramatise and employ the use of media trial, it will not be business as usual for him because we are ready to meet Keyamo every step on the same way.”
by its Executive Secretary, Dr Abdullahi Baffa, paid a courtesy visit to the EFCC Head Office in Abuja on Thursday. Speaking of a conviction secured in Osun State over a fraud case prosecuted by the EFCC involving TETFund funds, Magu said, “We have seen more people that could be held culpable. “We are ready to partner to block all loopholes.” He used the opportunity to encourage Baffa and his team, to simplify its processes “to prevent further stealing”, and to also “sensitize members of the public and all relevant stakeholders concerning TETFund and its project in their area. “It will allow the people to monitor the projects
and the activities of the contractors,” he said. While commending the EFCC for its “giant strides in the fight against corruption”, Baffa stressed that the assistance of the agency had become a necessity “to tackle the menace of inappropriate projects, abandoned projects, mismanaged funds, and stolen funds, which are almost grounding the institutions”. “We have also put in place some mechanisms to checkmate fraudulent activities between contractors and these tertiary institutions, but we still need the EFCC’s assistance to escalate the matter to prevent further damage to the educational sector and tertiary institutions,” he added.

Guber poll: Apprehension as Ekiti elects new Gov tomorrow Gbenga Sodeinde, Ado Ekiti, Henry Omunu, Tunde Opalana and Tom Okpe, Abuja
Ekiti State and particularly Ado Ekiti, the state capital, has been enveloped with noticeable apprehension of what will be on Saturday (tomorrow) when residents and people of the state will elect their new governor at the poll. Already people have started nursing the fear of unknown as people are seen in groups discussing the likely events that may arise in cause of the very serious assignment which may not come again until after another four years. Even political parties that have been accredited by Independent Electoral Commission (INEC) in the state for the election were variously calling for meetings apparently to strategise and get themselves and supporters prepared for the election as campaign has already been declared closed by INEC. Long queues were observed at every ATM centre, Banks and filling stations at Ado-Ekiti, state capital, and major towns, particularly towards the evening time on Thursday. Regular Police, and anti-riot policemen were seen moving up and down, patrolling the streets of Ado Ekiti,, while armoured tanks were seen stationed at hot spots and strategic location in Ado Ekiti. The Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Operations, Mr. Habilal Joshak, has said there is no cause for alarm, adding that his men were only doing their job which is primarily to protect the citizens and to ensure security and safety everybody. “We are performing our duty, our duty is to secure not only the electoral materials but all the citizens. “So we don’t want to be bedeviled with cases of hooliganism, ballot snatching and hate speeches before, during and after this election,” he said. The DIG however urged the residents not to panic but make sure that they are law abiding, adding that the police officers are for their protection. The chairman lNEC, Prof. Mahmoud Yakubu, also assured that the commission was ready for credible, free, fair, and acceptable election in the state. “I wish to reassure that our officials are under strict instruction to remain neutral. We have also accredited credible foreign and local observers to monitor this election. “We are confident that with the
arrangements we have put in place, Ekiti State Governorship election will be another good example of free, fair, credible and peaceful election and a further affirmation of the maturity of our democracy”, he stated. In a related development, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in a nationwide protest stormed the National Assembly on Thursday to protest Wednesday’s police siege on the Ekiti Government House and alleged manhandling of Governor Ayodele Fayose. Led by its National Chairman, Prince Uche Secondus, the protesters included members of the PDP National Working Committee and members of the party in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), former Senate President, Adolphus Wabara, former minister, Prof. A.B.C Nwosu, former PDP National Women Leader. Mrs. Josephine Anenieh and former Leader of House of Representatives, Mrs. Mulikat Adeola. Presenting PDP’s protest letter to the Deputy Senate President, Dr. Ike Ekweremadu, accompanied by Deputy Senate Leader, Bala Ibn Na’Allah, Secondus said the party came to register its protest against the attack on PDP members on peaceful procession from the Government House to the party secretariat in Ado Ekiti, barricading of the Ekiti Government House and brutality on person of Fayose and some other members. The PDP chairman said the development is a serious digression from democratic principles by the APC government which is a pointer that the nation is sliding into anarchy. The PDP alleged that the intimidation is a calculated attempt to weaken the party members and scare them away from coming out to perform their civil responsibility of voting in Saturday’s governorship election. He said “the situation in Ekiti State has reinforced the signpost of a manifest desire by the APC and its leaders to subdue the resilient spirit of Nigerians and set up a totalitarian regime in our country”. According to him, the APC-led Federal Government deployed armed police personnel led by one Compol Mopol Echel Echel, who blocked the Ekiti State Government House, attacked and placed the democratically elected governor of Ekiti State, Governor Ayodele Fayose, under house arrest and in the course of fighting for his right, he was brutalised and landed in hospital. “The invading police squad sacked
the official security at the Government House, fired sporadically into the premises during which Governor Fayose was beaten up by Policemen and brought down by volleys of teargas while several others were injured. “This, we have been informed, is part of the ‘order from above’, in line with the earlier boast by the Buhari-led APC, to “cage” Governor Fayose ahead of the July 14, 2018 Ekiti governorship election, so as to grant their agents a field day to rig the election. “In fact, we have been made aware that the invasion was a plot to assassinate Governor Fayose and blame it on accidental discharge by one of the policemen”, he said. “The PDP viewed this siege on an elected governor and a government house as a recipe for violence; a complete attack on our democratic order and direct assault on the corporate existence of Ekiti and her people as a federating part of our nation. Saying that “this is part of the desperate effort by the APC-led Federal Government to intimidate, subjugate, frighten and overawe the people and unleash a rigging mechanism for the election”, Secondus called on the National Assembly to impress it upon President Buhari and the APC that attempt to rig the election will be resisted by the PDP and the people of Ekiti State. Addressing the protesters, Senator Ike Ekweremadu commended PDP leadership for toeing a path of honour by choosing a peaceful means of conveying their grievances. He said in a democracy, there should be freedom of association, adding that no person, group or political association should be denied the right to canvass for vote. Ekweremadu said Nigeria as a leading light of democracy in Africa should lead by example and not be a negative reference to smaller nations, stressing that police and other security agencies should not be used by the government to repress, suppress or intimidate others. He promised that the leadership of the National Assembly will look into PDP complaint and speak with related agencies of government that would be involved in the election process. Also, Deputy Senate Leader, Bala Ibn Na’Allah, appealed to the PDP to go back peacefully without confrontation with security agencies. The protest train later went to the secretariat of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) where
a letter was submitted asking the commission to be a responsible and unbiased umpire at the Ekiti polls. Reacting, Dr. Adekunle Ogunmola, INEC National Commissioner, who received he letter, said the mandate of INEC is to conduct free, fair and credible elections. “That is what we are committed to. I assure you that we are not going to do anything short of that”, he said. Col. Austin Akobundu (rtd), the National Organising Secretary, had on Wednesday evening, on behalf of the National Working Committee, directed all State Chairmen to mobilise former NWC members, BOT members/ former Governors, all State Exco members, Exco members of the party at all levels and stakeholders with their teeming supporters, to embark on peaceful procession to the State Police Command in their respective states to protest the police brutality that happened in Ekiti State. However, the House of Representatives, on Thursday, resolved to investigate the alleged assault on Governor Fayose by the police, even as members were divided along party lines over the incident. The House decision to probe the alleged police assault was sequel to the adoption of a motion sponsored by Hon Tajudeen Yusuf from Kogi State, calling on the House to investigate the matter. Hon Yusuf, in his lead debate, condemned the physical attack and assault on the person and office of the governor of a federating state. He said unless urgent steps and action are taken to halt this ugly development, the over -zealousness of security agencies may jeopardise the 2019 general election. Supporting the motion, Hon Sunday Karimi, said what was witnessed in Ekiti State was an attempt by the All Progressives Congress (APC) to foist their governorship candidate on the people. But opposing the motion, Hon Aminu Suleiman, accused the Governor Fayose of dramatising and exaggerating the incident. After a voice vote, the House mandated all the relevant committees to investigate the immediate and remote causes of the Ekiti incident and report back their findings within two weeks. Meanwhile, the All Progressives

Congress (APC) has faulted the main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) over claims of police deployment to Ekiti State in the governorship election on Saturday. The party in a press statement on Thursday, signed by the National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, said: “We reject the claim by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) that policemen were drafted to Ekiti State to harass PDP supporters in Saturday’s governorship election in favour of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Governorship candidate, Dr. Kayode Fayemi. “As usual with elections, extra security deployment is routine to keep the peace for credible and transparent elections. “With PDP’s claim in its press statement, it is obvious that its leadership does not have the facts of the actual events in Ekiti State or it is deliberately attempting to divert public attention from the comical performance put up by Governor Ayodele Fayose on Wednesday, which was clearly contrived to give the impression to the public that he was being persecuted. “Somehow, Fayose has contrived to make this election about him. But it is not. The contest is between Dr. Fayemi and the Professor that has continued to hide behind Fayose’s fingers. What is clear to every voter in Ekiti is that to vote for this Professor is to hand Fayose a third term. Given their horrid experience with him, they have wisely rejected them both”. The APC further said that PDP in Ekiti State has read the handwriting on the wall, adding, “They know they have lost the election. They therefore have to save their face with these wild allegations. “The story of how Fayose used the security agencies to manipulate the last election is still fresh in the memory of the people. Unfortunately for him, he has no such opportunity this time. Winning a free and fair election is a strange territory to him and that’s why he is looking stranded. “It is therefore mischievous of PDP to continue to claim that the Police assaulted Fayose on Wednesday after Fayose himself has apologised to the Police authorities for lying against their officers. The ultimate decision about who governs Ekiti lies with the people of that state, which they will make on the principle of one man one vote”, the party added.
President/CEO, African Export Import Bank (Afreximbank), Dr. Benedict Oramah, has said that the bank is well ahead of projections under its strategy to boost intra-African trade. Oramah, while speaking at the ongoing Afreximbank Annual General Meeting and 25th Anniversary in Abuja, added that the strategy ‘‘is hinged on three key pillars of create, connect and deliver.’’ According to him, the create pillar deals with ‘‘the interventions we are making sure we produce the goods and services that will enter African trade efficiently, the connect pillar deals with all our interventions that are in place to link the producers to the buyers across Africa and deliver are the interventions that make it possible for that connection to be done efficiently, especially the logistics and related infrastructure.’’ The Afreximbank boss explained
that under the intra African trade strategy which would last up to 2021, ‘‘we have started fully from January 2017, we planned that by the end of the five years, $25 billion would have been disbursed. He said, ‘‘In the first year, we spent $8 billion to support a number of credit and trade financing that facilitates trade in some African countries. So, we are well ahead of our projections. We have supported the export of investment goods from Egypt, Tunisia, and Nigeria to many other African countries.” Meanwhile, the Director General, National Council for Arts and Culture (NCAC), Otunba Segun Runsewe, has expressed gratitude to the Bank of Industry (BoI), for releasing N300million to NCAC to start a pilot states across Nigeria with a view to leveraging on potentials in the sector for creation. Runsewe, who spoke as a panelist at the event, pointed out that ‘‘this is the time to use what we have to build a better tomorrow.’’

void Oshiomhole, APC’s exco members’ election Andrew Orolua, Abuja The Reformed All Progressive Congress yesterday dragged the national chairman of All Progressive Congress, Adams Oshiomhole and 53 others before the Federal High Court in Abuja praying it to void Oshiomhole and 12 other executive members’ election. Plaintiffs in the suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/1734/18 are Buba Galadima, Kazeem Afegbua, Barr. Nicholas Asuzu and Alhaji Hadi Ametuo. Defendants in the suit are the members of the National executives led by Adams Oshiomole, members of NWC, the chairmen of each of 36 states executive council, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and All Progressives Congress (APC). The defendants had filed the suit through their counsel, Tolu Babalaye. The plaintiffs had claimed that they sued for themselves and on behalf of all the other national officers, states chairmen and stated executives of All Progressive Congress. The plaintiffs are praying the court for a declaration that having regard to the constitution of APC, particularly Article 20 thereof, the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Electoral Act, the election conducted by the party at Eagle on June 23,2018 is invalid, null and void. They also want the court to declare that being no valid election at the National convention of APC, thereby leaving a vacuum, the reformminded faction of APC known
as the Reformed All Progressive Congress validly constituted the plaintiffs and the other National officers and state executives of APC to fill the vacuum and act in the interim capacities as officers of the APC. They therefore pray the court for an order of perpetual induction restraining 1st to 52nd defendants from parading themselves or claiming to be officers of APC or performing any discussion as officers of the party in any capacity whatsoever as their elections and swearing in as officers of APC as invalid, null and void. In addition, the Galadima led group wants the court to grant an order of perpetual injunction restraining APC from holding the Oshiomole led executive council and all the state executive council as either national officers, members of the NWC, zonal executives and state executives of the APC. They also want an order of perpetual injunction restraining APC from harassing, intimidating, suspending or expelling any of or all the plaintiffs from the apc, or taking any steps whatsoever to terminate the membership, rights and entitlements in the APC. The plaintiffs also pray for an order of perpetual injunction restraining INEC from recognizing or accepting the defendants as either national officers, members of NWC, zonal executives or state executives of the APC. In addition, they claimed that APC has become factionalized and this is no longer a secret as the crisis tearing the party to pieces at the National and sub-national levels are in public domain.

Buhari commissions Abuja metro rail Idu Jude, Abuja
President Mohammadu Buhari, yesterday commissioned the Abuja metro light rail, and asked Nigerians to believe in the ability of his administration as it means well for the wellbeing of the people. He said, “the new rail project having been completed within the shot time of this administration, is another evidence that we are government that cares for the people. I thank the Minister of the FCT for his ability to complete the project within for years”. President Buhari, however, urged the
Chinese civil engineering construction company (CCECC), to continue to offer reasonable services in all their contracts and more especially the newly commissioned Abuja metro rail and the National rail project to seal the existing relationship between the two Nations. Meanwhile, the president has urged management of the FCT metro rail project to ensure maximum customer services to ensure corporation between the two. Speaking while welcoming dignitaries at the occasion, the Minister of FCT, Mallam Mohammed Bello, revealed that the Abuja Rail Mass Transit System which has a total cost of $1.3 billion is an integral
part of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Transportation Master Plan designed primarily to transport large number of commuters and goods between Satellite Towns into the Metropolitan Public Transport system and the different Phases of the Federal Capital City (FCC). According to the Minister, the Abuja rail system is packaged into 6 Lots planned for phased development, based on preferential demand and available financial resources. He further stated that the Abuja Rail Mass Transit System is planned to integrate with the National Rail Network when eventually completed.
The PDP pointed out that it is crystal clear that President Buhari cannot comprehend the design, scope and utility projection of the rail project resulting in his hollow speech at the commissioning ceremony. “It is unfortunate that, after three years in office, President Buhari cannot boast of any development project conceptualised and executed by his administration in any part of the country, resulting in his numerous face-saving stunts, including commissioning projects executed by others, amongst them, a bus stop in Lagos and a borehole in Jigawa states”. Meanwhile, the PDP nowadays watch with amusement whenever President Buhari and the APC seek to claim credit for our achievements in various sectors. “However, while we understand their
predicament of having nothing in their scorecard ahead of the 2019 general elections, we state that poaching the achievements of others cannot help them in anyway. “It is even more pathetic that not only that the Buhari administration lacks the capacity to articulate and run any precise economic policy or project, it is also so inept that it cannot leverage on those handed over to it by the PDP, resulting in the helpless situation we have found ourselves as a people,” said the statement. Meanwhile the party urges Nigerians not to despair especially as the 2019 general elections offer them the firm opportunity to vote out this inept administration and return a development-oriented and competent government on the platform of the repositioned and rebranded PDP.
. . .Light Rail is our project - PDP Idu Jude, Abuja The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has flayed President Muhammadu Buhari and All Progressives Congress (APC), for attempting to claim credit for the Abuja Light Rail Project, even when Nigerians are aware that the project was conceptualised, initiated and policy-propelled by the PDP. The party in a statement Thursday said President Buhari’s rush to commission the rail project, without giving credit to the PDP, even when his administration contributed nothing to the project, underscores his desperation to claim achievements made by others in a frantic bid to cover incompetence and failure of his administration.

Ekiti governorship election: Test for our democracy
Raymond Oise-Oghaede
The Ekiti state governorship election is around the corner and all eyes from far and wide are on the state because of its cruciality to determining the level of the people`s preparedness for the 2019 general elections. Its importance to the permutations of the ruling parties at the Federal and State levels respectively cannot be overemphasized. Presently Ekiti is the only state in the South West that is not under the control of the (APC) and it is the only state that the main opposition party is holding on to and hoping to build on in its quest to have a major breakthrough into the region. Consequently, you will agree with me that it is going to be an interesting contest in all ramifications. The situation is further embroidered with curious expectations as a result of the caliber and personalities of the candidates that are been thrown into the contest. The popularity, political acumen and the wherewithal at the disposal of these candidates and their party platforms have made it look very unpredictable. However, the final determining factor as to how the contest will play out lies in the people (electorates). At this juncture, it would be paramount to state without fear of contradiction that, Ekiti people are well grounded in political activities (both practically and theoretically). They are people that know their onions; they know their rights from wrongs; they are versatile and are not pushovers when it comes to the political calculations of the South West in particular and Nigeria in general. The electorates have minds of their own and they cannot be likened to some others that rely on instructions from god-fathers and money-bags before taking political decisions. Even the uneducated and less privileged amongst them are `politically sound’. The people are so special and important
because of their political consciousness and uniqueness. All these qualities will be put to test on Saturday 14th instant at the pools. In view of the aforementioned, I wish to use this medium to call on well meaning Ekiti sons and daughters to do everything humanly possible to protect their political uniqueness. All the candidates vying for the position of governor (and their deputies) are bonafide indigenes of the state; you know them so well and do not need outsiders` to give you overview about their character and capacity to deliver on their promises; so, the ball is in your court to chose the best amongst them to take the state to the next level. You are to shun any act of manipulation or lawlessness from any quarters that the enemies of the states are waiting to capitalize on and cause confusion amongst the people. You have good names, reputations and dignities to protect; it is time to reiterate to the world that you are not just a state of `academic professors` but also of political authorities. You have always proven to be the `pride of democracy` in South West (in particular) and in Nigeria (in general) and, it is time to remain undaunted and make the region and country proud again. Though, you are temporary divided along political lines, you remain the same articulate and vibrant `Ekiti Ketes`. Thus, it is instructive to note that coming together to keep the beautiful flag of Ekiti flying to the admirations of all and sundry after the election is a task that must be accomplished. At this juncture, I would wish to call on all political parties and their supporters with interest in the Ekiti election to also note that all eyes are on them. They are expected to play by the rules and avoid any act that could lead to discreditability of the exercise. Presently,
the social media is flooded with the news that security operatives have besieged the states to prevent a particular party from holding their rally and even assaulted the governor in the process. In as much as the report is still sketchy and the veracity has not been confirmed, I do not want to believe that such act could still be carried out in the Nigeria of today in spite of all the negativities that is currently tainting the image of the country. It is even disheartening to read some unreasonable, unfounded and unpatriotic comments that `what goes round comes around` because similar act was carried out in 2014 by the then ruling party. The question is, are we progressing or retrogressing as a country? Does it mean that at this age and time, some of us still believe that two wrongs can make a right? If the answer is in the affirmative and it is supported by majority of the people, then I think we should be considering looking beyond democracy as a suitable government for our country. In view of this fact, I am using this medium to call on the government to do the needful to ensure that the aims and essentials of democracy are not dragged in the mud as a result of desperation of some disgruntled elements to discredit the exercise in Ekiti. Democratic election is a game of numbers where majority votes carry the day; thus the people should be given a level playing ground to exercise their fundamental obligations. Any other `backyard means` to arm-twist the people and steal their `right to decide` is not acceptable and should not be condoned by right thinking people and lovers of democracy. I am also using this medium to call on the International community to do the needful to protect democracy. If by now, we cannot comport ourselves and make the environment conducive for the conduct of a `state`s gubernatorial election`, one then wonders
what awaits us in 2019 in the countdown to the general elections. Apropos to the aforementioned, it is instructive for all and sundry, regardless of political affiliations to rise up and say `NO` to any act capable of truncating our democracy. If the selfish and desperate politicians are not bothered about `us`, it is high time we should be bothered about `ourselves` and take our destinies in our hands. This is time when the electorates should take up their responsibilities as the major determinants of outcome of elections through the legitimate means of one man, one vote. Any other means that will make our votes not to count should be resisted by every lawful means possible. All residence of the state are enjoined to go about their lawful duties without fear of intimidation from any quarters. There is no two ways to exercising your right to decide who takes over from the incumbent governor than to come out in your large numbers on Saturday to cast your votes. However, you must shun all acts capable of instigating violence before, during and after the exercise to remain true to your rating as the `most politically conscious people of the South West`. To all the security operatives that will be involve in the exercise, my advice is for you to discharge your duty of maintaining law and order apolitically. Do not bring your profession into disrepute by allowing politicians to use you for their selfish interests. Remember, that you are under oath to serve the country to best of the ethics of your profession; please remain steadfast Also, personnel of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) are also advised to remain an unbiased umpire in the conduct of the election. It is your responsibility to make the exercise, free, fair and credible; please get it right. Hopefully, we shall all be part of the success story of Ekiti.
Ekiti 2018: Fayose and his continuity agenda
Femi Odere
I have been waiting for the auspicious time to comprehensively interrogate Governor Ayodele Fayose’s “Continuity Agenda” which----for all practical purposes----the only pillar upon which his support for Prof. Kolapo Olusola (his deputy) in the July 14th governorship election in Ekiti state is anchored. While waiting, I have also been thinking about the appropriate angle from which----for all intents and purposes----to approach this last scam on Ekiti people should his deputy be elected, until I stumbled on the epigraph above on one of the Ekitifocus social media platforms in which I am privileged to be a participant. For me, this epigraph, as we shall see presently, is a true depiction of Fayose with Ekiti people that he claims to love so much on one hand, their material deprivation and state degeneration in his hands on the other. While we may never know where and how Fayose honed his skills as one of Nigeria’s greatest scam artists who intimidated, bullied, lied, charmed, maimed and even killed his way into the state’s highest political seat as a governor not once but twice, the fact remains that his name would not be forgotten in a hurry not only in Ekiti State but in Nigeria as a whole as that enfant terrible who represents everything ignoble in a political leader. So, as a governor who has exhausted his constitutionally mandated two terms in office, it is natural, and expected, of Fayose to be interested in who succeeds him. This is a legitimate desire. And he has not committed any crime. But the criminality that is undoubtedly inherent in Fayose’s continuity agenda in both his person and governance style
can, perhaps, be better understood if one takes a quick excursion into how the man happened into the people’s consciousness as well as the state’s political landscape. Traditionally a close-knit people, it was natural for them to welcome and embrace Fayose not only because he’s an Ekiti indigene who has made good (however dubious) for himself in his sojourn in Nigeria’s metropolitan city of Ibadan, but also to have displayed a generous spirit with his truckloads of water and kerosene---very important commodities for the survival of the locals----he dispensed free of charge before the 2003 general elections. It was also natural for them to think that his generosity was altruistic. Having warmed his way into their hearts with this largesse, Fayose succeeded in securing the ticket of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) as its governorship candidate with the connivance of then President Olusegun Obasanjo (another “ogbologbo” scammer) and his rigging electoral umpire who was also another crook by the name of Maurice Iwu. Ekiti people were satisfied with Fayose’s ‘victory’ in the 2003 governorship contest because he was just as ordinary as themselves. They probably thought that if he could be so generous with his personal wealth, and having demonstrated that he was one of them, he would equally be sincere in extricating them from the shackles of poverty with his policies and programmes as their governor. But if the people never heard of Babangida’s “subversive generosity,” they wouldn’t have been able to fathom that Fayose had already perfected his own subservient generosity which later metamorphosed into “stomach infrastructure” which they
took with relish. Aside owing several months of salaries those that are lucky enough to still have jobs, Fayose’s second coming has left the people worse off as he deliberately closed all job-creating, wealth-generating, human capacity building projects and programmes of his predecessor. He never had any manifestoes in his two forays into governance of the state. He governs on impulse. What’s more, Prof. Kolapo Olusola, the PDP candidate has said he would simply continue where Fayose left off if elected. It is therefore no surprise that the PDP candidate has started frying bean cakes (akara) for the people at roadsides. This is also what to expect as part of the continuity agenda. Fayose’s continuity agenda took its source from Lagos state. Recall what he said that he wanted to replicate the continuity put in place by Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the architect of modern Lagos----in Ekiti state. But what Fayose doesn’t seem to realise is that he doesn’t have what it takes to be like Tinubu who groomed and raised an ‘army’ of bright minds in the public service, some of whom are in the top echelons of the country’s public sector, including our current vice president. Unlike Tinubu, Fayose didn’t have the appropriate upbringing to understand what continuity entails as can be attested to with his crude treatment of traditional rulers, elders and everyone in-between that disagrees with him. He didn’t have the educational wherewithal to be able to nurture continuity as indicative of the half-baked and intellectually-challenged coterie of lawmakers and other public
officials he places at different levers of power and surrounds himself with. Neither does Fayose have the requisite skills set that can bring about the kind of continuity he craves as exemplified by his crude approaches to governance. He probably knows he cannot have the seamless continuity like what prevails in Lagos. This idea of continuity is just another scam to hoodwink Ekiti people. “But Fayose is no longer running for office,” you might be saying. True. His Deputy Governor Prof. Kolapo Olusola, has never run for anything. He is a deputy that knows next to nothing about governance and that’s how Fayose wants it. He kept Eleka in the dark about governance (not that he himself understands governance) for him to continue ruling Ekiti as the de facto governor. He would decide who to appoint and who to elect into elective offices. He would decide what would be done to the state revenues; who gets paid and who is given contracts. Eleka (if elected, but heaven forbid) would not be able to question him because he would be impeached by his hand-picked legislators he had proclaimed their Speaker. This is the main crux of Fayose’s continuity agenda. It is already a tragedy that a people that are domiciled in a state known as the “Fountain of knowledge” have allowed one man to fool them for so long. It would be a tragedy of monumental proportion if the people thinks that Fayose is still one of them when he is, in actuality, the handle that makes it possible for the axe (his policy of stomach infrastructure) to keep cutting down the trees (the people),

Editorial Commentary Fayose’s worst fear coming true Times Guest Colunmist Azu Ishiekwene Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose has been on the rooftop and won’t come down till long after Saturday. He has been screaming, for all the world to hear, that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) plans to rig this weekend’s governorship election for his arch foe, Kayode Fayemi. From Fayose’s camp, it seems that the APC will not be content to win. The icing on the cake would be to brutalise Fayose, break his neck and present his head on a platter to Aso Rock. Armageddon is the closest metaphor. As Fayose wept, with a neck brace wornupside down and his left hand in a sling, claiming he had been attacked shortly before his party’s rally in Ado-Ekiti on Wednesday, it would take someone who has eaten the proverbial head of the tortoise not to feel sorry for this drama prince. According to Fayose, the APC has enlisted the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the police, the Department of State Services, and maybe a few stray devils from Libya, to help Fayemi win the vote by means fair and foul. On Tuesday, he said the result of the governorship election had been written and quoted dodgy figures in two local government councils ostensibly to support his claim. Even though it is Kolapo Olusola, and not Fayose, that is the candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the election, you’ll be forgiven to think that Fayose is in the race. And he might well be. Whatever the constitution says about term limits, Saturday’s contest between Olusola and Fayemi is a proxy war for Fayose’s third term. He will summon both real and imaginary conspiracies, if not to win the vote, then perhaps to discredit the system and get public sympathy. His brace and sling are part one of the wretched political game, the costume of a political dramatist. When Fayose cries wolf about alleged connivance between INEC, security services on the one hand, and Fayemi’s campaign on the other, he’s haunted not only by concerns for a free and fair contest. He is tormented also by prospects that he could be at the receiving end of a system from which he was a principal beneficiary four years ago. Documented records after the election showed that Abuja robbed the treasury, dragged a major commercial bank into the mess and also put top military and government officials at the disposal of Fayose. The PDP Federal Government left nothing to chance in a desperate effort to ensure victory for its candidate at the time. It’s probable that Fayose would still have won that contest, partly because of Fayemi’s complacency. But a taped conversation by an insider, Captain SagirKoli, on how the election was rigged by state agents, revealed that rival party leaders, especially those of the APC, were deliberately subjected to harassment and intimidation on the eve of the election, casting serious doubt on the integrity of the result of the 2014 governorship election. This history is playing out as a farce, with the APC government deploying more policemen and soldiers in Ekiti in peacetime than we have
seen in any of the numerous hotspots begging for attention. After four years of Fayose’s politics of stomach infrastructure, which essentially comprised eating roasted corn by the roadside, eating amala at a market shed, sharing birthday cake on the streets, and supplying petrol to okada riders from the underground tank in the government house, Fayose ought to have raised enough foot soldiers from the 913,000 registered voters to defend the vote and secure a third term, without faking a broken neck. If this were a vote for brinkmanship, Fayose’s candidate would gain immeasurably from the hubris of the last four years. When Fayose is not advertising his death wish for President Muhammadu Buhari with state funds, he’s taunting and teasing the Presidency over one policy mishap or the other. He’s been ruthlessly efficient at criticising the Federal Government, insinuating and inflaming public opinion with half-truths often shared on a speed dial. Now, it has dawned on him that whatever his grouse against Abuja might be – and there are quite a few legitimate ones, like the herdersfarmers clashes, for example – his candidate will be judged not by his fans outside, but by voters in the state that he, Fayose, abandoned in his quest for popularity as the self-assigned lightning rod of the opposition. His worst nightmare must be what happens next. All the brace, the sling and the arrow are diversions from his poor record and the fear of what might happen to him once he no longer enjoys immunity. The fear runs deep. It goes as far back as Fayose’s first term when police, SSS and court records linked him to the deaths of Tunde Omojola, Ayo Adaramola and Kehinde Fasuba, whose families have yet to get justice. At home, in Ekiti, where he was re-elected to govern, there’s little evidence that Fayose’s record would save his candidate in Saturday and give him a third term by proxy. He said, in an interview with The Guardian in March, that education has been his greatest area of achievement. The records do not support his claim. Ekiti is one of the 17 states that has failed to access a N16.2 billion UBEC fund, provided to ease basic education in the states. Instead of accessing the fund, Fayose’s government defaulted on the N850 million counterpart fund loan provided by Access Bank under the previous administration. The government creamed off the interest, estimated at N70 million by two independent sources, and simply continued levying primary and secondary school pupils. On Fayose’s watch, the state university has been starved of subvention and the nursing school is a shadow of itself. Primary and secondary school teachers are being owed salaries of between six and eight months, while pensioners have not been paid for 11 months. This woeful record casts a shadow on the government’s eager attempt to claim credit for the modest improvements in WASC/NECO school results in the state. Pressed between the rock and the hard place, students may well have taken their fate in their own hands.
Our POSITION
Need for accountability and development
C
oming against the backdrop of the need to ensure accountability in the handling of government revenue, enhance transparency and check misapplication of public funds, the President Muhammadu Buhari- led administration introduced the policy of Treasury Single Account (TSA) into public accounting system at the federal level about 18 months ago. Under the system, all government revenues, receipts and income are collected into one single account, usually maintained by the Central Bank of Nigeria while all payments are done through the same account. In the main, TSA enables proper monitoring of government receipts, expenditure and helps to block most leakages in government. Such leakages have over the years largely contributed to the slow growth of the economy. With the introduction of TSA came a better cash management of government funds, elimination of idle funds usually left with different commercial banks and enhanced reconciliation of revenue collection and payment. In particular, since the accounts of Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) of government with the money deposit banks are zeroed every day, the banks no longer have access to the float provided by the accounts they maintained for the MDAs. The introduction of TSA in 2015 has been a source of pain to money deposit banks. This is because prior to the introduction of TSA, public sector funds constituted a large chunk of commercial banks’ deposits. Indeed, when TSA was introduced, the commercial banks held more than N2.2 trillion of public sector funds. The impact of such a huge amount of money leaving the banking system was debilitating and excruciating to the banks and to the country’s economy. Far more disturbing to the banks was the movement of funds of revenue generating parastatals such as the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), out of commercial banks. For the banks, implementation of the TSA policy brought some unintended consequences, such as deposit depletion, resulting in low asset quality, decreased revenue and liquidity stress, thus affecting the operation of all the banks and visiting economic hardship on Nigerians at a time the country was going through an agonising recession. In the absence of cheap public sector accounts, the banks
were forced to reposition their strategies to survive in the light of the new realities forced on them by the government. In the main, the banks responded by concentrating more on their traditional roles of savings aggregation and financial intermediation. To improve their performance, the banks also became more innovative in generating revenue to support their operations and improve their profitability. Some of them increased interest rates on deposits to attract more customers, while some increased the interest rates on their loans to shore up their profitability. It is admitted that government is the largest spender in the economy. At the commencement of the execution of TSA, more than N2.2 trillion of the Federal Government MDAs’ funds were pulled out of the deposit money banks with debilitating impact on banks’ liquidity and hampering their ability to successfully carry out their financial intermediation. In all, while the coming on board of TSA has helped in no small measure to streamline government revenue and expenditure therefrom, it should not be out of place for the government to finetune the policy with a view to address the pains resulting from its implementation.

2019: Nigeria facing existential threat - Jerry Gana Tom Okpe, Abuja Former Minister of Information and one of the aspirants seeking Presidential ticket of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Prof Jerry Gana, has warned that Nigeria is facing an existential threat in the proportion comparable to the end of Biafra war. Speaking on Thursday while officially declaring interest to contest for the exulted position, the former Minister of Information expressed sadness on the level of crippling uncertainty everywhere in the country. He further cautioned that the present government has shown incompetence and lack of capability to turn around the drifting country, warning that Nigeria will implode if President Muhammadu Buhari returns for second term. The former chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), pointed out that apart from insecurity which has rendered human life brutish, short and nasty in the country, the asymmetrical war on corruption by the present government is fuelling ethnic decadence.
“Being a patriotic and committed democrat, who has carried a burden for the rapid development of our far nation for decades, I am deeply concerned at the very real prospect of Nigeria imploding unless our great party comes to the rescue with a God fearing, dynamic, untainted and credible leadership. “Nigeria is facing an existential threat, the seriousness and proportion of which have never been witnessed since the end of the war. “There is crippling uncertainty everywhere. People are suffering unprecedented and untold hardships as a result of arrested development. Insecurity that has rendered human life brutish, short and nasty is rampart across the zones, states, communities and villages. “Asymmetrical war on corruption is fuelling further ethnic decadence, while anxiety, un-patriotism and poverty have coalesced into a creepy epidemic of self doubt. In all of this, the current leadership of the nation, at the highest level of government seems unconcerned, incompetent or incapable of turning around the drift. “Having consulted and affirmed by my family, local community, friends
and a cross-section of eminent citizens and stakeholders across the core national divides of ethnicity, religion and regions, I am convinced that this is the fit time for me to offer for this national assignment on the platform of our great party. “It is my hope and prayer that the party will positively note my interest as under your able leadership, it offers opportunities for service to our dear country, Nigeria,” he said. Responding, Dr Ishaq Abdul Ahmed, the Deputy National Chairman of SPD, who represented the National Chairman, Olu Falae, described Prof Gana as an asset to the party and the country.

Art & Culture Stories: Chris Onuoha
The war against terrorism, cultism and other social vices in the society cannot be fought with guns and extreme forces alone. With the evolving technology and the speed at which youths engage in social media and electronic gadgets, it may seem an uphill task to curb such vices among the youths. However, subtle approach through reviving the reading culture to revert the idleness and lazy thinking of the youths may have a far reaching effect to redirect their mind from evil thoughts. Nnamdi Paul Agbakoba, a multitalented performing artist, author and poet in his recent conversation with the media proffers solutions, embedded in his latest efforts, books. He focused on many years of creative works and reflected on his recent adventure into the world of book writing with special interest on youths. Having engaged in creative works that span for decades, he recently decided to go into book writing. With a career that started way back in 1971 as a young dramatist starring in an epic opera production “The Sleeping Beauty” at age 12, he went further exhibiting more zeal and enthusiasm in performing art by staring in a high school drama production of Shakespeare’s Merchant of Venice as “Antonio” at age 17. The flow continued in his high school days as he adapted and performed poems from renowned poets – Wole Soyinka, J.P. Clark and David Diop among others in a TV show known as Youth Forum in Enugu. Agbakoba later became a Newscaster in the then Nigerian Television, NTV Enugu in the late 70s. In 1980, he proceeded to United State of America to hone his career in broadcasting and TV/Radio production. After return, he was very active in movie production and floated a production studio called ‘Vision Questron Production’. Having had a stint in the Nollywood movie industry, he decided to tilt and engaged in writing books. Born in the famous Agbakoba dynasty in Anambra State that prides itself with the renowned human right activist/Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Olisa Agbakoba, the Federal House Member representing Onitsha North and South, Hon Gozie
We can fight cultism, terrorism among youths with books says Nnamdi Agbakoba Agbakoba and others, Nnamdi Agbakoba carved a niche for himself in the creative industry. With his recent effort ‘books’, much is seen in the trend that runs in the family which is ‘human right’ projects. Nnamdi also runs and NGO, Society Against Terror And War (SAT-WAR). Virtually all the books written so far, hinged on human right issues: terrorism, youth restiveness and cultism in our schools. And also, there is a 30 minutes documentary on child abuse called ‘Pans of Bondage’ for sensitisation drive on child right. Others include Terrors of War; That Child; Pictures & Poetry of War; Deep Secretand yet to be published biography: a compendium of life and times of Olisa Agbakoba at 65. Besides, there is an educational material ‘a postulation of new theory on education’ meant to promote reading culture among students in the country. “Having done so much in the performing art sector, I felt there is a need to explore the other side of me. Book writing is a part of art that lives in me. And more interestingly, I picked interest in writing books and poems that inspire the African youth and child. With about five books written by me, I see need to revive reading culture among our youths as the culture is declining. In my days back in school, it is a pride to show how many books you have read. But today, reverse is the case with technology gadgets: internet, mobile phone and social media taking over. The reading culture is in desperate need of a jump-start and it is my passion to do all in my ability to help reverse the ugly trend” Agbakoba said In one of his works, “Deep Secrets” Agbakoba displayed deep sense of ingenuity with well-crafted style of writing. ‘Deep Secrets’ is an outright discouragement of social vices among youths. It specifically tackles the twin evils of student cultism and examination malpractices that have almost become a norm in Nigerian higher institutions and even secondary schools. These twin evils have had adverse impact on mostly

vulnerable youths who are involved in antisocial behaviour. ‘Deep Secrets’ is the story of Okechukwu Obiefuna, a freshman Law student in a Nigerian university, who is lured into cultism by Justin Agorum Ike, an older student in the same department whom he had come to love and trust. Okechukwu’s life begins to fall apart after a cult clash that claims Justin’s life. Unable to get a hold on himself, he opts for suicide. Not even the preaching, counseling and exhortation from his godfather, George Obanye, can change his mind. The storyline is narrated from the first
person point of view and embellished with a high dose of irony and suspense. The beauty of the book lies for the most part in its conversational approach and accessible language, which makes it easy to read and assimilate. In other works such as ‘Terrors of War’ and ‘That Child’Agbakoba captures some obnoxious treatment African children go through. According to him, “Child abuse and the terror of cultism should be condemned.” “It is unbelievable that terrorism emerged just a year or two after I started writing my first book, “ Terrors of War” in 2002 and militancy and terrorism reached Nigeria only three years later.
I fear to imagine what the world will be like in another 15 years from here,” Agbakoba stressed. All his works so far has garnered huge appraisal from various bodies that include Education stakeholders in the country, community leaders and office of the Vatican, Rome, for quality contents. Agbakoba however disclosed that education ministries and Joint Admission and Matriculation Board JAMB are working to endorse the materials to include among recommended books in Nigerian schools. To him, having come this far, every need to revive reading culture must be applied to keep the legacy.

Excise duty hike on alcohol: Labour unions caution FG over lost of N420bn investments, 250,000 jobs Ladesope Ladelokun Implementing the recent 500 per cent increase in excise duty rates on alcohol by the Federal Government would make nonsense of N420 billion investments and expose 250,000 workers to risk of losing their jobs. The Chairman, Distillers and Blenders Association of Nigeria (DIBAN) made this known to the Senate Committee on
Finance at a public hearing on the matter recently. It will be recalled that the committee recently organised a public hearing, which was hinged on “The Urgent Need to Review the Excise Tariff Increment In order to Save Local Distillers from Looming Extinction.’’ Speaking on the proposed hike in excise duty, the representative of the Labour Unions, Mr. m-Mike Olanrewaju, said the proposed the proposed excise duty rate
must not be allowed to stand as it would make the already bad unemployment and poverty situation in Nigeria worse, adding that the increase would be resisted by stakeholders. His words: “One of the strategies expected from any responsible and responsive government in preventing crime and fighting poverty is job creation and not job losses through outrageous and outlandish tariff hikes that will collapse industries, and by extension, render millions of
Nigerians jobless. “To us in the labour sector, it is capital no to such tariff increase, and if any increase is to be made at all, it should not be above one digit. The proposed increase is counterproductive and will be resisted by all stakeholders, because after Dunlop, Michelin, etc., we don’t want any industry to collapse or relocate out of the country again.” According to the Director-General of Manufacturers Association of
Nigeria(MAN), Mr Segun Kadiri, the Federal Government and Tariff Technical Committee(TTC) failed to adopt the tariff rate agreed upon when they consulted stakeholders on the the matter, but the Minister of Finance, who was represented by the Director of Legal Services in the ministry described the protests trailing the increase in excise duty rates as unfortunate because they were agreed upon by stakeholders before the ministry issued a circular on February.
FAAC won’t hold until under remittance by NNPC is resolved - Mahmood Mathew Dadiya, Abuja The Chairman of Finance Commissioners’ Forum and Adamawa State Commissioner of Finance, Mahmood Yunusa has disclosed that the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) would not hold until further notice due to the ongoing misunderstanding between the committee and the Nigeria National
Petroleum Corporation (NNPC). The deadlock is the third in a series all in an effort to share the May allocation which should have been done in June. Mahmood said this on Thursday in Abuja after the meeting was aborted for the third time in a series. He said that the reason the FAAC meeting is cancelled again “is because we want to strengthen the system to avoid a repeat of this issue in the future. It is not about how much the NNPC has remitted
now, it is about putting the necessary things in order to make sure we do not experience this. “The President is very much interested on this issue and it is on his table now very soon all that need to be done would be done so that every money coming to the federation account will be channeled to the appropriate authority. “Every money has to go to the federal government account. The moment the system is strengthened, definitely there
will be no any problem. There will be no more saying bring more money, the money is shortened or this and that. “We know that people are facing difficulties, people are in pains, salaries have not been paid by federal government, salaries are owed in a lot of states but this is the sacrifice that all of us must do in order to resolve this under remittance of revenue by NNPC. “We are all partners in progress - the state’s, local government and the NNPC itself. At the end of the day, NNPC will also appreciate what we are doing now at the end of the day, because if new process are put in place and being operated the way they are supposed to be, nobody will complain and even the NNPC will be off the pressure. But if you are supposed to remit
much money into the federation account naturally the much money will come what any agency is able to generate and pay into the federation account, definitely it will come through the entrenched process.” The chairman of the forum said that once the issue is resolved, there would no be any fight anywhere. “So that is where we are now and I think we are going on the right direction and we are about solving the problem, and we have made a tremendous progress,” he said. On when next the meeting will hold, the Forum’s chairman said he didn’t know adding that “it is a function of when we will conclude on the issue. On whether the NNPC is cooperating with the Committee, he said, “it is a matter of law and

Ekiti: We won’t be intimidated, despite attack on Fayose –PDP ensure they force themselves upon us even when they are not doing very well. These are some of the reasons why I said I must speak to our people to remain resolute and committed and to make sure that nobody is cowed or nobody is scared away from the agenda of our party to ensure that we wrestle power from these people in 2019. “As for the event in Ekiti, we have alerted the Nigerian people and the comments of the APC leadership, from their current chairman to the candidate who came in there for his second attempt at getting power from Ekiti people and doing nothing about it is the fact that they want to use federal might to hijack power rather than using the political process. “The PDP is ready and will confront whatever machination they put in place
Stories: Patrick Okohue AS the people of Ekiti State in South West Nigeria get ready to go to the poll tomorrow to elect their next governor to succeed the incumbent, Dr. Ayodele Fayose, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has advised its members in the state not to be intimidated by whatever the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC), which is the ruling party at the centre may want to do to intimidate them, as the party was ready to confront the APC or its agents and ensure a free and fair election in the state. The PDP at a press conference with some journalists in Lagos and addressed by its National Vice Chairman (South West), Dr. Eddy Olafeso said that despite the allege assault on the governor of Ekiti State by the Police on Wednesday at a campaign rally of the party, that nothing the APC government or its agents does that it will be intimidated to abandon its course of ensuring that the people of Ekiti and indeed all Nigerians continue to enjoy their freedom in safety. According to the PDP leader, who was joined at the briefing by some leaders of the party in the South West and Lagos, including Secretary of the PDP in Lagos State, Prince Muiz Dosunmu, State Legal Adviser, Muyideen Tejumade, State Publicity Secretary, Taofeek Gani, a 2019 governorship aspirant in the state Mr. Adedeji Doherty among others,
Dr. Ayodele Fayose and Dr. Eddy Olafeso
the PDP was determined to ensure that it wins the Ekiti election and all other elections in the country, so as top liberate the people from the hardship they are currently facing under the APC leadership. He said, “In Ekiti State yesterday our party was beleaguered, the governor of Ekiti State, Dr. Peter Ayodele Fayose was seriously manhandled by the police and the excuse we are getting is the fact that they did that in order to prevent crisis in Ekiti, but
it is on record that Ayodele Fayose has maintained peace in Ekiti since he assumed office in 2014 till date without any form of crisis. “We did our mega rally in Ekiti State there was no crisis, the APC came in, apart from shooting themselves they heated up the polity and eventually made everything look as if Armageddon is on its way. APC’s attitude to governance has been an attitude to contain and curtail the freedom of our people,
Gani Adams sues for peace in Ekiti election The Aare Onakakanfo of Yorubaland, Iba Gani Adams, has urged all stakeholders in the Ekiti State governorship election, including political parties, candidates and the electorates to ensure peace and tranquility in the state, before, during and after the election. Adams, in a statement signed by his special assistant on media, Kehinde Aderemi, expressed concern over the prevailing situation in the state, saying election should not be a door die affair. “In the build-up to Saturday’s election, Ekiti State has been in the news for the wrong reasons. A situation where the
security of the electorate is not guaranteed is not acceptable to our democracy in the 21st century. “The election in Ekiti on Saturday will be the first election in the South West, since my installation as the Aare Onakakanfo of Yoruba land in January. As the Aare Onakakanfo of Yoruba land, with strong belief in the promotion of Yoruba culture, and a proponent of peace across the world, I urge the Inspector General of Police, the Department of State Security(DSS), and other government security architecture to rise up to the challenge of ensuring peace in Ekiti this Saturday.
“A situation where security operatives allegedly wear masks a few hours to an election is uncalled-for. Therefore, politicians must play by the rule, not forgetting that elections would go, but Ekiti state will remain,” he said. Aare Adams, however, supported the prompt intervention of Ekiti monarchs, for lending their voices to ensure peace in the state, even as he appealed to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), to ensure adequate security and a level playing field for all the candidates, so that the electorate in the state can exercise their civic responsibilities.
and we will say no to what they are attempting to do to our people. Ekiti people needs our support, Ekiti people needs our understanding to know that they have the inalienable right to select whoever they want to be their governor and that the PDP will not want to do that on the blood of our people, this country is yearning for leadership, the last few years has been abysmal failure on the part of leadership to stem the tide of insecurity, to stem the tide of poverty, to stem the tide of unemployment, to bring Nigeria to the level of parity with its rank in the international community,” he said. Describing the current political climate in the country as the darkest hours, Olafeso said, “This is to express our mind and our innate fears about what is happening in the political space in this country.
“This is the darkest moments in our country, the last three years has witnessed a spiral into the abyss of poverty, despair and desperation and it appears it has no end, the killings are coming in flood, yesterday in Taraba State 42 people were killed and 12 villages ransacked. “Events that happened in Ekiti State yesterday became a very serious issue for our party. The party national chairman, Prince Uche Secondus has raised alert to all the state chapters of the party across the 36 states including the FCT and the price of freedom is eternal vigilance and we must to be vigilant to what is happening with the APC government and the collusion with security forces and sometimes interdem with some of the institutions that are meant to play major roles in ushering in the process of democracy and selecting our leaders,” he said,
Ekiti saga, another low point in breaches of constitution, rule of law by FG –Turaki Frontline presidential aspirant on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), in the 2019 election, Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, SAN, has condemned what he called the brutal attack on the governor of Ekiti State, Mr. Ayodele Fayose and “the law-abiding citizens of the state who were trying to exercise their fundamental right of freedom of association in a peaceful manner”. The presidential aspirant in a statement signed by the Director Media and Publicity, Kabiru Tanimu Turaki Presidential Campaign Organisation, Mr. Sola Atere, noted that the Ekiti saga was another low point in the litany of breaches of the Constitution and indeed, the rule of law which has become the hallmark of the APC-led Federal Government. “Imagine a governor who has constitutional immunity and is also supposed to be the Chief Security Officer of his state being brutalised by security officers. His security details are being withdrawn while movement into his official residence is being restricted. What then is the hope of the ordinary Nigerian?” he asked. Turaki recalled that a similar ‘jungle’ treatment was meted out to the Rivers State governor, Nyesom Wike in the past, “not to talk of the Gestapo approach adopted in arresting some revered judges of the Supreme Court on mere allegations which could not be proved at the
Kabiru Tanimu Turaki
temple of justice.” This attitude, he said, is consistent with the continued intimidation and harassment of leaders of the opposition party, the PDP especially. The Presidential aspirant reminded Nigerians of his consistent warnings that the APC is entrenching a legacy of despotism, intimidation, harassment of persons or groups not sharing its views, nepotism, insecurity and poverty on the people. “Here is a government that talks ill of its citizens at will, thereby lowering their estimation
in the eyes of the international community,” he regretted. “The chicken has come home to roost with the government baring its fangs in Ado Ekiti in its desperation to win Saturday’s governorship election by hook or by crook. “Obviously, the upcoming governorship election in Osun State and the 2019 General Elections, and indeed, Nigeria’s democracy face serious danger unless men and women of goodwill with the support of the International community rise to defend constitutional rule in Nigeria,” he said

Turkish champions Galatasaray have announced Henry Onyekuru has joined them in pre-season training camp in Switzerland after they agreed a loan deal with Everton. This was coming after initial reports out of Turkey that Everton and Galatasaray were deadlocked on the transfer for the Nigeria forward. Reports had suggested Galatasaray were insisting on a clause that will give them an option to buy Onyekuru on a permanent basis after his loan deal.

Gala first announced his arrival on their Twitter handle by welcoming him to the club, before they followed up with his arrival in Switzerland. The Turkish giants will feature in the UEFA Champions League in the new season. Last year, Onyekuru signed a five-year contract with Everton. He was then shipped out on loan to Anderlecht, but has insisted he will not return to the Belgian club after some open rows.
Serena Williams, Angelique Kerber reach Wimbledon final Times have changed, opponents have come and gone, and Serena Williams keeps vying for Grand Slam titles. The 36-year-old Williams, who did not play Wimbledon last year while taking a leave of absence to have her first child, reached a Grand Slam final for the 12th straight season by beating Julia Goerges 6-2, 6-4 at the All England Club on Thursday. When Williams left the game soon after claiming her 23rd Grand Slam at the 2017 Australian Open, it appeared her streak might be under threat. That’s not the case. She will vie for her eighth Wimbledon title against German Angelique Kerber on Saturday in a repeat of the 2016 Wimbledon final, which Williams won in straight sets. The 11th-seeded Kerber beat Jelena Ostapenko 6-3, 6-3 in the other semifinal on Centre Court on Thursday. Goerges, the 13th seed, was playing in her first Grand Slam semifinal. Williams has won all four of their encounters. For Kerber, it was clear right from the opening game how things were going to
go against Ostapenko. She was not going to dictate or control much. Instead, Kerber employed spectacular defense and solid, steady play, while letting Ostapenko determine the outcome of nearly every point. It worked. The 11th-seeded Kerber reached her second final at the All England Club by avoiding too many mistakes and using a seven-game run to seize control of the match. “These are the matches I was working for as a young kid,” Kerber said, “and to stand here again in the final at Wimbledon is great.” Kerber is a former No. 1 and a two-time major champion, both coming in 2016 at the Australian Open and US Open. That was also the year she lost to Williams in the Wimbledon final. The left-handed Kerber was mainly a passive participant in the early going against Ostapenko. That first game consisted of eight points: Three were unforced errors by Ostapenko, including a double-fault to begin the proceedings; the other five were winners by her, including
a 100 mph ace to close the hold. Five games in, Ostapenko led 3-2, and the numbers were still tilted toward her. She had 14 winners and 10 unforced errors, while Kerber had three winners and — this was key — zero unforced errors. There were no drawn-out points in the early going, no lengthy baseline exchanges, essentially because Ostapenko wouldn’t allow it. The Latvian plays an aggressive brand of firststrike tennis that carried her to the 2017 French Open title as an unseeded 20-year-old. Kerber, in contrast, bides her time, working the back of the court to get everything back over the net, often kneeling to get low enough to reach shots.
Eventually, Kerber’s style ruled the day. She went on a half-hour run in which she took the last four games of the first set and took a 3-0 lead in the second. Ostapenko’s strokes were missing and she grew increasingly frustrated, slapping a thigh after a miss or leaning forward and putting her hands on her knees after others. By the time she flubbed a backhand while falling behind 5-1 in the second, she dropped her racket and screamed. It took Kerber two tries to serve out the victory, getting broken to 5-2. But unlike in the quarterfinals, when she needed seven match points to win, this time it required only two, with the match ending — fittingly enough — on a forehand by Ostapenko that sailed wide.
Chelsea sack Antonio Conte as Maurizio Sarri appointment looms Chelsea have sacked coach Antonio Conte after reaching a compensation agreement for the final year of his contract, paving the way for Maurizio Sarri to take over, ESPN reports. Conte, who had refused to walk away from Chelsea unless the final year of his contract was paid in full, has been waiting since winning the FA Cup in May to resolve his future at Stamford Bridge, but difficulty in securing Sarri delayed the process. Chelsea are expected to announce Sarri’s appointment on an initial two-year contract imminently — together with the signing of Italy
international midfielder Jorginho for a combined fee of €65 million (£57.5m) — after convincing Napoli chairman Aurelio De Laurentiis to release the 59-year-old from his contract. In May, Napoli appointed Carlo Ancelotti to replace Sarri amid speculation that the latter could take the Chelsea job. Eden Hazard and Thibaut Courtois have both publicly said they were seeking clarity on Chelsea’s summer plans before deciding whether to sign new long-term contracts, with the club facing a season without Champions
League football after finishing fifth in the Premier League. Conte led Chelsea to the Premier League title in his first season in England in 2016-17 and followed up that achievement with the FA Cup triumph this year, but his relationship with the board became damaged beyond repair, highlighted by his repeated public and private complaints about transfer policy. He also clashed with senior players such as Diego Costa and David Luiz while others had begun to grow weary of his methods. In the wake of Chelsea’s FA Cup win,
Willian obscured Conte in a team celebration photograph posted on Instagram. Chelsea hoped that another club might attempt to buy Conte out of the final year his Stamford Bridge contract as he was unwilling to resign, but Paris Saint-Germain’s appointment of Thomas Tuchel and Real Madrid’s choice of Julen Lopetegui eliminated the possibility. Before joining Chelsea, Conte had only coached in his native Italy, leading Juventus to three consecutive Serie A titles from 201214 before taking over the national team at Euro 2016.
