Born on November 9, 1961, Mohammed enlisted in the police in 1986. He has a bachelor in Geography. He was at one time a director of peacekeeping
operations. He is a former Commissioner of Police, Enugu State Command and was an AIG in-charge Zone 5. He is currently a directing staff member at the National Institute of Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPS) Kuru, near Jos, Plateau State. His elevation would imminently see several Deputy Inspectors General purged from service, an exercise that would be reminiscent of his predecessor, Idris in June 2016.

Assets declaration palaver: In one fell swoop, court stops CJN trial Andrew Orolua, Doosuur Iwambe and Tunde Opalana, Abuja Attempt by the Federal Government to arraign the Chief Justice of Nigeria, (CJN), Justice Walter Onnoghen, on six counts charge before the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) for alleged misconduct and operating a foreign bank account ran into a hitch on Monday as he claimed he was not served personally with the charges. The development came just as Justice N. E Maha of the Federal High Court in Abuja, on Monday, put on hold the arraignment of the CJN before the CCT, pending the determination of two separate suits challenging his arraignment. After two hours of intense arguments on service by the Prosecution Lawyer, Aliyu Umar, a senior advocate of Nigeria (SAN), and the Lead defence lawyer, Chief Wole Olanipekun (SAN), who led 45 other SANs and 55 other lawyers, Chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal Danladi Umar fixed Tuesday, January 22, 2019 for trial. Prosecution lawyer, Umar, SAN, informed the tribunal that the business of the day was to arraign the CJN Onnoghen and for him to take his plea. He said the defendant was not present. Chairman of the Tribunal then asked why the defendant was not brought to the tribunal. The prosecution said the defendant was served with the summons. Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Wole Olanipekun, who led a team of about 45 other senior advocates informed the tribunal Chairman, Danladi Umar, that the defendant has filed an application challenging the jurisdiction of the tribunal to entertain the suit. Olanipekun also informed the court that the defendant was not in court because he has not been served with the summons of the tribunal. He insisted that because he was not personally served as required by law and he would not have been at the tribunal. He said that besides the issue of service, the defendant had filed an application challenging the competence of charge brought against him and the jurisdiction of the Tribunal to entertain the case. “The defendant was not served. If he has been served personally, the defendant is willing to be in Court,” he added. Olanipekun (SAN) also told the tribunal that the defendant had filed an interlocutory application challenging the jurisdiction because CJN Onnoghen is a judicial officer. Citing Supreme Court authorities and Court of Appeal decision, he argued that the defendant need not to be in court until the application is heard and deposed off. Prosecution lawyer, Umar (SAN), countered that Olanipekun’s submission, insisting that section 397 (2) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA) provides that “no application should be made until the defendant has taken his or her plea.” The prosecution conceded that Justice Onnoghen was not personally served with the summons. He explained that when the clerk got to his office on Friday, Onnoghen directed that his own clerk should sign for it. He urged the tribunal for a short adjournment to enable the tribunal

Over 50 Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SANs) alongside dozens of other lawyers attended the proceedings in line with the call of Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) President, Paul Usoro, SAN, to show solidarity with the CJN. Count one of the charge read: That you, Justice Walter Nkanu Onnoghen CJN, GCON, between June 8, 2005 to December 14, 2016 being a public officer, serving as a Judicial Officer of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as a Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria failed to declare and submit a written declaration of all your assets and liabilities within the prescribed period of (3) months after being sworn-in as a Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria on the 8 day of June, 2005 and you thereby contravened the provisions of section 15(1) of the Code of Conduct Bureau and Tribunal Act Cap 15 LFN 2004 and punishable under section 23(2) a, b and c of the same Act. In counts 2 to 6, Onnoghen, was accused of falsely declaring his assets by omitting to declare funds in his domiciliary accounts as well as an e- saving accounts both in local and foreign currencies, all in Standard Chartered Bank, Wuse, Abuja. Meanwhile, Justice N. E Maha of the Federal High Court in Abuja, on Monday, stopped the arraignment of the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Walter Onnoghen, before the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) by the Federal Government pending the hearing and determination of two separate suits challenging his arraignment. The suit marked FHC/ ABJ/CS/27/2019 was filed by Incorporated Trustees of the Centre for Justice and Peace Initiative and the Incorporated Trustees of International Association of Students against the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), Chairman, Code of Conduct Tribunal and the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB), Federal Judicial Services Commission, CJN and the Inspector General of Police (IGP) were filed before Justice Maha while arraignment of the CJN was being expected before the tribunal. Justice Maha, while ruling on the two separate ex parte applications, on Tuesday, ordered parties to maintain status quo till January 17, 2019. The Judge ruled that the defendants should be served with all the court papers filed and that they should appear in court on January 17, being the next adjourned date for the hearing. Onnoghen: Buhari, APC desperate over 2019 general election
CJN Onnoghen Meanwhile, the Peoples Democratic Party Presidential Campaign Organisation (PPCO) has accused President Muhammadu Buhari and the All Progressives Congress (APC) of desperation in the assault against the judiciary with the attempt to forcefully remove the Chief Justice of the Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen. Rather than retracing its steps from the ignoble act against the CJN, the party described as despicable attempt by the APC and the Buhari Presidency to blackmail Nigerians, who condemned the assault on the judiciary, as being sympathetic to corruption. The PDP said this has exposed the desperation of the PDP to subdue and annex the judiciary, particularly, following increasing agitation by Nigerians for the prosecution of President Buhari’s cronies and APC leaders over exposed corruption. Kola Ologbondiyan, the party’s spokesperson in a statement, said: “The Buhari Presidency and APC in turning around to fight Nigerians have further exposed their desperation to replace Justice Onnoghen with a pliable CJN, who will execute their plots to use the courts to detain opposition leaders as well as vocal members of the Civil Society during the elections. “It is now crystal clear to all Nigerians that apart from failing woefully in all its promises, the APC and its presidential candidate, President Buhari, are beginning to manifest their autocratic attributes. “Furthermore, the Buhari Presidency is not only corrupt but has become an asylum for corrupt people”. The PPCO therefore challenged the APC and the Buhari Presidency to name one APC member that has been investigated, prosecuted or arraigned before any court of competent jurisdiction in the last three and half years in spite of their humongous corruption. The party accused President
Buhari encouraging corruption more than any President that had the privilege of governing Nigeria. He said: “It is important to restate that the Buhari Presidency is now a refugee camp for known and welladvertised faces of corruption. From the factional National Chairman of the APC, the co-chairman of the Buhari campaign Organisation, the Director General of the Buhari Campaign, the zonal directors and the recent entrants from Bauchi and Gombe states, all leaders of the APC and Buhari campaign structure are all candidates of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC)”. The PDP charged Nigerians not to be deterred by the attacks by the Buhari Presidency, which has since become desperate and antipeople following its rejection by Nigerians because of its corruption, incompetence and insensitivity to the plights of our citizens. Direct AGF to take complaints against Onnoghen to NJC, SERAP urges Buhari However, Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to “instruct the AttorneyGeneral of the Federation and Minister of Justice Abubakar Malami, SAN, to immediately withdraw the charges against the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Walter Onnoghen, and to send any allegations of breach of asset declaration provisions of the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria (as amended) to the National Judicial Council (NJC) for investigation.” The organisation said: “Mr. Malami should then request Justice Onnoghen as the Chairman of the NJC to recuse himself, so that the next most senior justice at the Supreme Court can preside over the process and set up a panel to investigate the allegations against Justice Onnoghen to ensure fairness and justice in the matter.” In a statement by SERAP senior
legal adviser, Bamisope Adeyanju, the organisation tasked the government to follow due process of law, and allow the NJC to consider the allegations against Justice Onnoghen. He said: “We believe that enforcing asset declaration provisions would help to prevent corruption and abuse of office and ensure transparency in public officers including judges. “But the government should follow due process of law, and allow the NJC to consider the allegations against Justice Onnoghen first before pushing for prosecution, should there be any relevant admissible evidence. This would help to accord Justice Onoghen his entire rights through laid down process. The statement read in part: “The moral guilt or the legal guilt of Justice Onnoghen should be left for the judicial process to decide, as he is presumed innocent until proven guilty by a court of competent jurisdiction. For now, the fundamental question is whether he is afforded the due process of law, as he is constitutionally and legally entitled to. This is our interest in this case, and this should be the interest of every lover of justice. “It is the principle of due process of law which is at stake in this case, the soul and spirit of which will be endangered if Justice Onnoghen’s case continues to be heard before the Code of Conduct Tribunal. A denial of justice to one citizen is a denial of such to all. Due process here requires that Justice Onnoghe be given an opportunity to have allegations against him heard by the NJC. “The bringing of this case against Justice Onnoghen before the Code of Conduct Tribunal would appear to have fallen below the minimum procedural standards of legal justice, which in turn would affect the quality of justice he receives. Due process rights should not be curtailed in the interest of expediting enforcement of asset declaration provisions. The authorities have the responsibility to insure fair treatment of judges or others who face these kinds of charges that may ultimately lead to deprivation of liberty. “Preventing the NJC to first hear the allegations against Justice Onnoghen would deny him his constitutionally and internationally recognised right to a fair hearing and lead to the matter being unnecessary politicised. “The authorities may have a strong case against him but the possibility of success is diminished if the proper procedure is not followed. The requirements of justice and success of the fight against corruption justify the fundamental need to ensure and apply due process rights in this case.”
INEC releases Regulations, Guidelines for 2019 polls Iunde Opalana, Abuja
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), on Monday, released the Regulations and Guidelines for the conduct of the 2019 general elections in the country. INEC announced this in a statement dated January 12, 2019, and personally signed by its chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu.
It disclosed that the regulations and guidelines covered the general elections, bye-elections, re-run elections, as well as supplementary elections. The electoral umpire explained that this was done in exercise of the powers conferred on it by the Constitution and the Electoral Act 2010. It added that the regulations and guidelines supersede the existing
ones. In the document signed by INEC chairman, the Commission disclosed that accreditation of voters and voting would hold simultaneously between 8-2pm. The section on the method of voting also prescribed that the Permanent Voters Cards and Smart Card Reader shall remain instruments of identification of prospective voters.

President Muhammadu Buhari has warned that about 40 million population in the Lake Chad region would pose adverse migration and security challenges to the world, if nothing is done to address the shrinking of the Lake Chad. Buhari, however, called for more commitment from the international community on redirecting water to the Lake Chad so as to give life back to the people. Buhari raised the alarm on Monday while receiving Letters of Credence from the High Commissioner of Canada to Nigeria, Philip Baker, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. The President said that the tragedy of the shrinking Lake Chad would continue to fuel more illegal migrations, banditry and provide willing hands for terrorism since majority of the people have lost their means of livelihood. “In 1920’s, an academic rightly predicted that except there’s a redirection of water to Lake Chad, it will dry up. “Now whenever I go for any global meeting or visit a country, I will always draw the world’s attention to the adverse effect of climate change on the lake, and the resulting negative effects,’’ he said. Buhari urged the Canadian government to support the ongoing efforts to divert water from the Congo River to the lake. “Canada has the capacity
to help us. The lake is now less than ten per cent of its normal size. A redirection will help our people from getting into the Mediterranean Sea,’’ he added. The President said Nigeria and Canada have good relations dating back to the early 60’s when Nigeria gained independence, commending the country for “its vast resource utilisation and solid political background.’’ In his remarks, the Canadian High Commissioner commended President Buhari for providing leadership in the country, and championing the cause for the replenishing of the Lake Chad Basin, noting that the Canadian Governor General, Julie Payette, had presented a picture taken from space of the vanishing lake to the President when she visited recently. Baker said more than 11, 000 Nigerians were studying in Canada, with many residing in the country, assuring the President that majority of the students return to build and invest their knowledge in the development of Nigeria. The Canadian High Commissioner said he would work towards improving relations between both countries on migration, education, entrepreneurship training, mining, renewable energy and Information Technology. Receiving Letters of Credence from the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Catriona Wendy Campbell Laing, President Buhari said Nigeria remains grateful for the

In her response, the Ambassador of Argentina noted that both countries must move beyond the level of signing agreements to ensuring that issues of trade, sports, investments and agriculture get practical follow up for mutual benefit. Carmen Squeff said that Argentina and Nigeria also have a lot to share on movie productions, sports like football and Polo as well as festivals.
Polls: 22,643 candidates contesting 1,504 positions – INEC The INEC National Commissioner for North-central, Mohammed Haruna, has said that 22,643 candidates would contest 1,504 positions during the forthcoming general elections in the country. Haruna, who is in charge of Kwara, Kogi and Nasarawa states, made this known on Monday in Ilorin during an interactive session with traditional rulers in the state ahead of 2019 general elections. The commissioner said that 73 candidates would contest for the post of the president while 1,158 would slug it out for the governorship positions in 29 states. He added that 1,886 candidates would contest the 109 senatorial districts in the country and 4,634 candidates contesting for the 306 House of Representatives seats. Haruna said 14,643 candidates would contest for 991 posts in the various State Houses of Assembly. “In addition, the elections will hold for the six chairmen and 62 councilors of the FCT Area Councils because the end of their tenures has coincided with this year’s general elections,” he said. Haruna said the governorship elections would hold in 29 states, adding it would not hold in seven states: Kogi, Bayelsa, Rivers, Edo, Ondo, Ekiti and Osun. He said the elections in those states had
been held, based on the court’s order. He said INEC would deploy between 750,000 and one million ad-hoc staff to be sourced mainly from NYSC, federal tertiary institutions, and Ministries Departments and Agencies (MDAs). The INEC official told the royal fathers that 84,004,084 voters are expected to participate in the general elections. “The commission has been diligently implementing the timetable and schedule of activities for the 2019 general elections. “We have so far implemented 9 out of the 14 activities. Soon, we shall implement all activities and fulfill the mandate thrust upon us by the Constitution. “The commission has made available to each political party a copy of the entire national register of voters.” He said the commission had printed and delivered the Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) to the states for collection by registered voters. “We urged registered voters who have not collected their PVCs to pick their cards. “For this, INEC has specially arranged for those who are yet to collect their cards to do so from January 16 to January 21, at the designated centres in their wards.” Haruna emphasised that INEC would use the Smart Card Readers (SCR) for
the general elections, adding that the commission had procured additional 27, 327 card readers and enhanced the performance of 164, 763 old ones. According to him, the performance of readers has improved from the 93.1 per cent in Kogi in 2015 to 99 per cent now. The commissioner, who expressed concern on the low turnout of voters during elections in the country, appealed to the royal fathers to always mobilise their subjects to vote during elections. Haruna said to discourage vote buying, the commission had altered the configuration of the polling units by moving the ballot boxes closer to the voting cubicles. This, he said would make it difficult for voters to expose their marked ballot papers to party agents for payment. “We have introduced a partial ban on the use of mobile phone and other photographic devices by voters while in the voting cubicles. “We are also introducing the rolling and flattening of ballot papers by voters before casting them into the ballot boxes.” Haruna, therefore, appealed to royal fathers to help in enlightening the people of their domains about various aspects of elections.

The Akwa Ibom State governor, Mr. Udom Emmanuel, has said paying the new minimum wage in the state is not a problem. Speaking on Monday in Uyo during consultation with the Nigeria Labour Congress, Trade Union Congress, United Labour and other affiliated unions, Governor Emmanuel said the state government is only waiting for the Federal Government to decide on the new minimum wage so that it can implement in the state. He said labour is the bedrock of development in any nation and commended the unions for their support so far, adding that he has fulfilled his promises to the unions. He stated that even when allocations from the Federal Government was still pending, he sourced for money to make sure salaries were paid. “Labour is the key to development. You cannot relegate labour to the background. “Minimum wage has never been an issue, it is just that it has been a matter of legislation. Our python will swallow terrorists, kidnappers, cattle rustlers, other criminals, says Buratai The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt. Gen. TY Buratai has assured Nigerians that the ongoing Operation Python Dance will help in stamping out various criminal activities across Nigeria. Buratai gave the assurances Monday in an opening remark on the occasion of the flag off of Exercise Egwu Eke 3 at the 81 Division, Ikeja Cantonment Lagos. He reinstated that the exercise was introduced as a way of reassuring law abiding citizens and Nigerians in general of the resolve of the Nigerian Army to provide adequate security and safety during and after the 2019 generation elections. “This significant event is also a reassurance of the resolve of the Nigerian Army to conduct joint operations in collaboration with other security and para-military agencies in aid to civil authority. “The objective is to reinvigorate all existing operations in the country with additional manpower, equipment and resources to address the lingering security problems in the country. I am to assure Nigerians that at the end of the Exercise which is also conducted simultaneously by other divisions in the Army, the Python must have swallowed all the bandits, rustlers, terrorists, kidnappers, robbers and militants in the country. The Python will also swallow thugs and other and other miscreants that may raise their heads to disturb peace in the country,” Buratai said. According to him, it is also meant to address the issue of fake news and
unpatriotic elements that are impeding military operations and demoralizing forces at the expense of national security, adding that the exercise is a realistic training package in Internal Security operations, clearance operations, emergency management, rescue operations, road blocks, cordon and search as well as anti – kidnapping and anti - cultism.” “It is necessary to draw attention of well-meaning Nigerians that while reporting issues of defense and security, they must have at the back of their minds the importance of national security. Just as mentioned earlier, defense and national security is not all comers’ affairs. No one is permitted to divulge any information that is injurious to national security. This is contained in the Official Secret Act 1962. “Section 1(3) of this Act state that a person who transmits any classified matter to a person to whom is not authorized on behalf of the government to transmit it; or obtains, reproduces or retains any classified matter which he is not authorized on behalf of the government to obtain, reproduce or retain, as the case may be, is guilty of an offence”. Short News December deadline for removal of unqualified teachers stands – TRCN boss
The Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) says it will ensure implementation of the December deadline by the National Council on Education for the removal of unqualified teachers from classrooms. TRCN’s Registrar, Prof. Josiah Ajiboye, said this on Monday in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja. “The National Council on Education’s position to remove unqualified teachers from classrooms by December 2019 still stands. “At the level of TRCN, we stand by that position and we are doing everything possible to make sure that it is implemented and we have been sounding it since 2017. “And that is why we are sensitising those who are yet to be qualified, to make sure that they get qualified. “We understand that so many of them are running programmes that can lead to the award of Diploma, especially Post Graduate Diploma in Education to make them qualified. “And now to register with TRCN, they must pass the Professional Qualifying Examination, there are two opportunities this year in 2019, the May diet and October diet.

EFCC arraigns company director for N9m fraud Andrew Orolua, Abuja The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), on Monday arraigned one Chukwunyere Thomas Emefu, before Justice Yusuf Halilu of a Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court, Maitama on a two-count charge bordering on dishonesty and unlawful conversion of N9, 000, 000 public fund to himself. He was arraigned along with his company, Ctradex Properties Limited. It was alleged that he converted to his personal use, the sum of N2.5
million, being part payment for a plot of land at Corona Garden Estate, Plot 352, Cadastral Zone, Galadimawa District, Abuja. It was further alleged that in 2016 he also diverted to his personal use, the sum of N6.5m for same purpose. The matter was subsequently reported to the EFCC for investigation; upon completion of investigation the accused was arraigned. Prosecuting counsel, Mary Onoja, told the court that the matter was slated for arraignment and applied that the charges be read to the accused person in order to take his plea.
The accused pleaded “not guilty” to the two counts. In view of his plea, the prosecution lawyer applied for a trial date and asked for “accelerated hearing”. Defence lawyer, R.O. Adakole, however, moved the motion for the bail of his client, arguing that “the reason for bail is to ensure that the defendant stands his trial”, and he was certain his client will not jump bail. Justice Halilu, thereafter adjourned the matter to January 17, 2019 for “ruling” and ordered that the defendant be remanded in Suleja Prison.
Incessant strikes in the education sector in Nigeria have been described as counterproductive and harmful to the country’s education system. The Vice Chancellor, Abia State University Uturu (ABSU), Professor Eliezar Uche Ikonne stated this while briefing newsmen on the activities lined up for the school’s 2019 convocation, adding “If we can avoid strikes in the public system, we would have made a great gain. Ikonne therefore urged the Federal Government to be alive to its responsibility in the sector “to sustain constant education” in the country. The VC recalled that for the past three years, ABSU has run successful uninterrupted education calendar, stating that this has accounted for quality education in the school and higher allocation of JAMB admission quota for the school. He disclosed that the story of the university has changed positively, pointing that out a lot of positive developments in the school, including meeting up with its core responsibility.

Beyond Brexit, Nigeria wants a new trade deal with Britain

In August last year, Prime Minister Theresa May visited Nigeria. She spoke about increasing investment opportunities, a new trade deal and economic partnership, tackling human trafficking, and assistance to bolster the rule of law and the fight against organised crime. All of this is extremely welcome, and indeed necessary. Unfortunately for Mrs. May, the government that she met with led by President Muhammadu Buhari cannot deliver any of this. For Nigeria to move forward, a change is required. In the four years of President Buhari’s Administration, Nigeria has regressed by almost every domestic and international metric. We have fallen in the World Bank’s Ease of Doing Business report; we have fallen in Transparency International’s Corruption Perceptions Index; we have fallen in the World Justice Project’s Rule of Law Index. And Nigeria suffered the indignity of being named officially the poorest country in the world: We now have more people in extreme poverty than any other country in the world. In the past four years, India and others have sprinted ahead in the race to reduce poverty. Nigerians are being left behind. The forthcoming elections in February offer the opportunity for a change. President Buhari has promised the
international community that the elections would be free and fair, but there is little confidence amongst Nigerians that he will stick to this promise. What is needed is pressure from the international community to ensure that Nigerians have the right to determine their own futures, and to do so free from harassment, vote-suppression or outright fraud. As a major funder of democracy initiatives around the world, the U.K. has a real stake in this process. Backsliding on democracy and freedoms has been a sad theme globally in recent yearsthis cannot be allowed to happen in Africa’s largest democracy. The Federal Government, the Nigerian Election Commission (INEC), and local and State officials must understand that the international community is watching and will not accept anything less than a fully free and fair election. This must include an end to the government¹s ongoing use of state apparatus to hassle and harass opposition candidates and supporters. President Buhari’s track record proves that he cannot be trusted to safeguard democracy, if left to his own devices: he must be pushed by the international community to do the right thing. President Buhari’s regime is tired, and a truly democratic change is needed. That means re-establishing the rule
of law, the respect for the courts, and a crackdown on corruption. A real anti-corruption process is required so that Nigerians, and foreign investors, can have confidence in our domestic laws, not show trials perpetrated as ‘crackdowns’ on corruption, where corrupt cronies were allowed to flourish. Equally, as our roads and railways crumble, a new infrastructure programme is needed to revitalise them: such a programme would create jobs, stimulate economic activity, and provide long-term benefits to people across the 36 Nigerian states. Food security is also a major concern. President Buhari has done little to inspire Nigeria’s enormous agricultural potential. We can, and should, be the bread basket of Africa. Only with re-imposition of the rule of law, and a focus on attracting investment and innovation, will Nigeria’s agricultural potential be realised. And, of course, the question of oil looms large. Nigeria’s oil resources are not in themselves a curse b ut neither are they a panacea. If oil alone could save a nation, then it surely would have saved Venezuela. Everyone can see for themselves the stark reality of that hypothesis. President Buhari has failed to diversify the economy and it will be the responsibility of the next government to
succeed where he has failed. What does this all mean for Britain, and the future relations between our nations? Taken together, my new agenda aims to increase the purchasing power of Nigerians across our country: providing economic security, improving quality of life, reducing poverty. This, in turn, provides a platform of security and certainty for investors to take advantage of new opportunities for collaboration n ot just oil a nd a chance to work with a government that is serious about building a prosperous Nigeria. I foresee a new trade partnership between Nigeria and Britain, enhanced cooperation on security and counterterrorism, and deepening our historic links of culture, family and language. This agenda will benefit ordinary Nigerians and Britons alike, as well as increasing mutual investment in our respective economies. President Buhari had his chance: but the international rankings do not lie. He has proven himself neither a leader who can elevate the domestic situation of the Nigerian people, nor one who can inspire foreign investors and international partners. The future relationship between Britain and Nigeria can be bright and prosperous but it requires a change of leadership in Abuja.
The Judiciary is in distress

The two day meeting of the National Judicial Council will begin on Tuesday 15th January. It is a scheduled meeting which will be presided by the Chief Justice of the Federation, Justice Walter S. Nkanu Onnoghen, who happens to be Chairman of the Council. The meeting has long be fixed before the problem of Justice Onnoghen began with the code of Conduct bureau. Already members of the council are in Abuja for what may turn out to be a crucial meeting of the council. Issues to be discussed includes appointments of judicial officers and the discipline of the judicial officers. Surely the issue of petition written against Justice Onnoghen will come but is not listed. The deputy chairman of the council who may likely take over from Justice Onnoghen as Chief Justice in the future, Honourable Justice Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad will attend the meeting. Justice Tanko Muhammad is from Doguwa-Giade, a local government in Bauchi State. He is 65. He received a bachelor’s degree in 1980. He later obtained a Master and Doctorate (Ph.D.) degree from Ahmadu Bello University. Justice Tanko Muhammad began his career in 1982, after he was called to the bar in 1981, the same year he graduated from the Nigeria Law School. By procedure he has five more years to spend in the Supreme Court. Other members of the Council who are already in Abuja are Justice Z.A. Bulckachuwa, Justice E.O. Ayoola, Justice Sunday Akinola Akintan, CON, Justice Umaru Abdullahi, Justice V.O.A. Omage, Justice Adamu AbduKafarati, Justice B.A. Adejumo, Justice Nasiru Ajanah, Justice M.L. Abimbola, Justice Kashim Zannah, Justice Pascal Obinna Nnadi and Justice Marshall Umukoro. Others are Hon Grand Kadi Mohammed Abdulkadir, Justice Julia Kyentu, A.B. Ahmed Gambo Saleh, the Secretary of Judicial Council of Nigeria. The embattled President of the Nigeria Bar Association, Mr Paul Usoro will attend the meeting as well as a prominent lawyer, Mr Daniel Dodo. The National Judicial Council is the apex body for the Nation’s Judiciary. It is one of the Federal Executives Bodies created by virtue of Section 153 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as amended. The Council is vested with enormous powers and functions, which no such institution in the 1979 or any other previous Constitution had. By the provision of the Paragraph 21 of Part One of the Third Schedule o the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as amended; “The National Judicial Council shall have power to—recommend to the President from among the list of persons submitted to it by—the Federal Judicial Service Commission, persons for appointment to the Offices of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, the Justices of the Supreme Court, the President and Justices of the Court of Appeal, the Chief Judge and Judges of the Federal High Court, the President and Judges of National Industrial Court, and the Judicial Service Committee of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, persons for appointments to the Offices of the Chief Judge and Judges of the High Court of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, the Grand Kadi and Kadis of the Sharia Court of Appeal of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja and the President and Judges of the Customary Court of Appeal of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja. It is rather unfortunate that Justice Onnoghen and Mr. Paul Usoro are on trial at this time. The trial makes a mockery of the good work the National Judicial Council has been doing of late in cleansing the Judiciary. I am aware that the council had
sanctioned many judicial officers and has set up proper procedure on the way forward for the judiciary. I will not dwell much on the trial of Mr. Usoro since EFCC is prosecuting him already, but that of the Chief Justice came like a bombshell. There have been conspiracy theories on the issue but in spite of that the Chief Justice of the federation must be above board. That office is too important to be ridiculed with scandals. Since the appointment of Justice Onnoghen there has been one problem or the other. There has be no incumbent Chief Justice that has been embattled like Justice Walter Onnoghen. All things being equal, he still has almost two years to spend on that seat before December 22, 2020. The circumstances of his being sworn-in has not been without crisis. He was nominated by the acting President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo and was confirmed by the Senate on March 1, 2017 and thereafter sworn in on March 7 2017. Justice Onnoghen who is from Ourike Town, Biase Local Government of Cross Rivers State, was nominated to the Supreme Court by President Olusegun Obasanjo. By seniority, after Justice Mahmud Mohammed, he was to be the Chief Justice of the Federation and why President Muhammadu Buhari did not forward his name before he travelled out for confirmation in March 2017 is still a mystery to me. By order of seniority, if he retires as expected in spite of current crisis, he will be succeeded by Justice Ibrahim Tanko Mohammed. The hierarchy is not determined by age but by the time you are sworn-in as a Justice of the Supreme Court. Next to Justice Tanko Mohammed is Justice Ola bode Rhodes-Vivour. Justice Olabode Vivour is from Lagos State. He is 67. He was called to bar in 1975. The third on the line is Justice Nwali Sylvester Ngwuta, 67, from Ukawu, Onicha, Ebonyi State. He is an Ezza-speaking person by birth.
He obtained a bachelor’s degree in Law from Obafemi Awolowo University and was call to the bar, the Nigerian bar in 1978 after he graduated from the Nigeria Law School. Justice Ngwuta was arrested by the Department of State Security Services (DSS) on 8 October 2016 on allegation of bribery and corruption. The fourth in line is Justice Mary Ukaego Odili (66) (nee Nzenwa), CFR. She is the wife of Peter Odili, former Governor of Rivers State from 1999 to 2007. She was appointed an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria (JSC) by President Goodluck Jonathan and was administered the oath of office by Chief Justice KatsinaAlu on 23 June 2011. She met Peter Odili, a medical doctor, at a campus party and the two began a romantic relationship. In 1976, she graduated with an LLB (Hons) and was rated the best student of the department of commercial and property law. Shortly after, she attended the Nigerian Law School and received her B.L. certificate in 1977, before embarking on her youth service in Benin City and Abeokuta. Odili was serving as a house officer in Benin City at the time. In hierarchy, the following are Justices of the Supreme Court—Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, Justice Musa Dattijo Muhammed, Justice Clara Bata Ogunbiyi, Justice Kumai B. Akaahs, Justice K.M.O. Kekere-Ekun, Justice John Inyang Okoro, Justice Chima C. Nweze, Justice Amiru Sanusi, Justice Amina A. Augie, Justice Ejembi Eko, Justice P.A. Galinje and Justice Sidi Bage. The Judiciary must rise above board if it is to earn the honour and dignity that it deserves. A judicial officer must be last to break the law under any excuse of ignorance. A corrupt judiciary will lead to a corrupt society. The Nigerian Judiciary must purge itself.

Editorial Commentary Your right to vote and to vote wisely

Election is defined as a formal and organised way of choosing people for a political office or other positions. In Nigeria, elective democracy was introduced in May 1919, when the Township Ordinance gave right to vote for three members of Lagos Town Council to some men. The first election to the council was held on 29 March 1920. The first national election to be held in Nigeria was in 1959, and in 1965. Elections were held in the southern region of Nigeria. After a long period of military rule, the 1983 general election took place. This was however cut short by the December 1983 coup that brought Muhammadu Buhari as Head of State. In 1993, the country witnessed another general election that was adjudged as the most free, fair and credible elections by both local and international observers. The said election was presumably won by Chief MKO Abiola, but sadly the results were annulled by the then Military President General Ibrahim Babangida. From 1999 till date, the country has enjoyed uninterrupted democratic dispensation witnessing four successive elections and the fifth coming up in February 2019. Election makes a fundamental contribution to democratic governance as it enables voters and citizens to choose leaders and representatives and to hold them responsible and accountable for their actions in office as they are only elected to serve the people for a defined period of time as allowed by the country’s constitution. In a developed democracy, because those in elective positions are conscious of the fact that they are required to submit themselves for periodic elections, they tend to put in their best to serve the people knowing full well that their performance will be the determining factor for their re-election. This is why we have high rate of fulfilling election campaign promises; it also go beyond individual candidates vying for various elective positions to the general political ideology. Moreover, where the electoral processes is competitive and forces parties and candidates to expose their records and future performances to proper scrutiny, election serves as a platform for the discussions and debates on public issues and policies. It also serves as facilitator of public expressions. Election thus provides political education for citizens and ensures the responsiveness of democratic governments to the yearnings of the people. It also serves as acts to legitimise the acts of those who wields power. Elections seem to facilitate social and political integrations and it is also a tool to actualize a selfactualising purpose by confirming the worth and dignity of individual citizens as human beings. Whatever other needs, participations in an elections serves to reinforce the worth and self esteem of individual voters. As 2019 general elections draw nearer, voting gives the citizenry an opportunity to have a say in issues pertaining to their lives and through expressing partisanship, to satisfy their needs to have a sense of belonging. Seeing the importance of elections and the powers of the electorate, it is therefore important for the electorate to know those characteristics an individual possess before casting their votes. In that case, the electorate can be glad with the choice of the candidate he or she made to
represent them at all level since the aim is to bring development to their communities. Whether held under authoritarian or democratic regimes, election has ritualistic aspects. Campaigns that precede elections are dramatic events occasioned by rallies, posters, banners, and television coverage, all of which draw attention to the importance of participations on the events. Candidates, groups and political parties and others representing diverse opinions and objectives combine to invoke the spirit of nationalism. Whatever the peculiar national or regional or local variations, elections are events that arouse emotions, and channelling these emotions and passions into collective symbols help in breaking the monotony of national life and focus attentions on the common fate. Most elections do not determine public policies but instead confer on a small group of officials the authority to determine public policies through the instrumentality of laws and other devices on behalf of the whole. Political parties are central to the elections of public officers, the selections and nominations of candidates, a central and vital first stage in the electoral processes, generally lies in the hands of political parties:, an election only serves as the final process in the recruitments of public officials. The party systems can thus be regarded as an extension of the electoral processes. In Nigeria today, we have repeated cases of vote buying which has made the electorate to deprive themselves of the right to question the performance of their elected representatives. This is so because the officials believe they bought the conscious of the people they are representing hence making them act as lords when in the real sense reverse should have been the case. For instance, an average Briton see himself as very busy, that is why he will tell you boldly that the Prime Minister is there to serve and they can hold her accountable for any slightest wrong committed and ultimately remove her from office if need be. This is why you have all elected officers performing based on their campaign promises. It is no longer news that in developed democracies politicians are removed from office for failure to account for just £1,000 or he can be made to explain why the state funds was used to pay for his utility bills. What do we have in Africa? Leaders feeding fat on our commonwealth and at the same time depriving us from questioning their actions because they believe with the state resources in their disposal they can have their way during any election period. This could have been avoided if credible individuals were voted in from the onset of the current democratic dispensation. However, it is not late to remedy the situation if we can collectively look at individual track records and vote wisely and not along party lines, but based on what we think they can offer and reject whatever the obviously morally bankrupt politicians are offering which will continue to make our collective development a mirage . Voting for the right candidates give us the latitude to call them to order whenever we feel they are not representing us well. This will no doubt lead to appreciable development of our country and we will all be glad to have lived a good legacy for the future generations.

he Nigerian political space since 1999 has experienced a tremendous improvement especially with the level of interest it has generated, that is if the number of persons jostling for the various political offices is anything to go by. As at the last count the number of political parties in the country has risen to over 90 from the three that heralded the nation into the present democratic space in 1999. However, one worrisome trend about it is the declining rate of women participation in the political life of the country, as the women folks seems to be facing serious challenge in their ability to break into political limelight. This is even more evident from the recent primaries of the various political parties in the country where the number of women elected to contest for the various offices was very negligible For example, since 1999 and infact in the history of Nigeria’s political life there has not been any elected woman governor, the closest that a woman came to being governor, was when then governor of Anambra State, Mr. Peter Obi was impeached by the state Assembly and her deputy, Dame Virgy Etiaba was sworn in as governor and she held that position for a few months until Obi got the court to reverse the impeachment. Despite the fact that the history of Nigeria and its political emancipation as a country cannot be complete without mentioning the significant contribution of women, as evidenced in the activities before independence, during the first, second and third republics and even up to the present dispensation, the women folk have continually been relegated to the background either in getting elected into public offices or even in being appointed. This obviously has nothing to do with their capacity, as many of them has attained heights in their professional life that even men are yet to attain. Though the activism in women was further awakened in the country since after the Beijing conference and declaration in 1991, which gave birth to the much talked about affirmative action that prompted the United Nations (UN) to subsequently concede 35 percent of all positions to women, nothing much has been done in the country to meet that target of women participation in politics. In the early days of this dispensation, it must be said that President Olusegun Obasanjo made significant progress towards fulfilling that quota, while the administration of Goodluck Jonathan, also appointed more women into key positions, while there were equally a significant number in elective positions. However, that progress made in recent years seem to have been short-lived, perhaps due to the ever increasing complexities in the political system and high monetisation of the politics which has become a major challenge militating against women participation. Presently, out of 109 senators we have seven women senators and out of 360 members of the House of Representatives, we have about 17 women; we had far more women from 1999-2015; there were also lots of woman in parastatals and ministries in the country. Also an attempt recently to get a bill on affirmative action, sponsored by Senator Oluremi Tinubu through the National Assembly failed because it could not get enough support on the floor of the Senate. At an ECOWAS Female Parliamentarians Association (ECOFEPA) meeting earlier in the year, the President, and Nigerian Senator Stella Oduah said that Nigeria has the lowest female representation in elective positions in West Africa. Senator Oduah, called attention at the 15-member states of the sub-region to the dwindling number of women’s participation in politics in Nigeria to 7 per cent
since the 2015 elections. She said, women have only 6.1 per cent representation in State Houses of Assembly, 3.9 per cent in the House of Representatives, 7.34 per cent in the Senate and almost zero per cent in the executive arm of government. In West Africa, Nigeria ranks even lower than Ghana which has as at 2016 about 10.7 per cent female representation in the parliament and 27 per cent female as cabinet ministers. Togo comes up second with about 17.60 per cent women representation in its national parliament as at 2017, and 18.4 per cent in ministerial positions. Senegal has the highest representation of women in elective positions, ranking 12th in the globe for the number of women in elective position, that is 3 per cent down from its initial ranking. Considering the role of women in nation building across the world and the increasing relevance of women even in the African continent, with the recent election of a women as the new President of Ethiopia after the end of a Woman president’s tenure in Liberia, it is our considered opinion that it is high time Nigeria gave women more opportunity to express themselves in the political space. It is also our belief that with the lack of positive development in the Nigerian political space, the entrance of more women into it may bring a breath of fresh air that may turn the fortunes of the nation around for good and help revive some key sectors of the nation’s economy. The role of women like Queen Amina, Mrs Ransome Kuti, Margaret Ekpo among many others in the positive development of the Nigeria must not be so quickly forgotten as to shut other women out of the space, rather it should be a motivation to encourage more women into the space especially in this critical time of the nation’s history.

Extradition: NDLEA urges court to dismiss Kashamu’s suit

The National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) on Monday urged a Federal High Court, Lagos to dismiss fundamental rights enforcement suit filed by Buruji Kashamu, seeking to stop security agencies from extraditing him to the United State of America (USA), over drug related offences. Kashamu, a Senator representing Ogun East at the National Assembly, in a suit marked FHC/L/CS/930/2018, filed by his lawyer, Ifeoma Esom, dragged Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Commissioner of Police Lagos State, NDLEA and Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) before the court. He is seeking an order of perpetual injunction restraining all the respondents from arresting or detaining him in any matter whatsoever interfering with his personal liberty and freedom of movement on the basis of his lawyer’s letter dated May 23, 2018, wherein he protested the NDLEA’s invitation to USA to send a request for his extradition. Kashamu also urged the court presided over by Justice Chukwujekwu Aneke, for a declaration that the instructions given by the AGF to other respondents on May 25, 2018, in reaction to his letter dated May 23, 2018, wherein he protested the NDLEA’s invitation to the USA to send a request for his extradition to US, and the attempt and any further attempts by the first to fourth respondents to arrest him on the basis of the AGF’s said instructions are
Deputy Senate President, Dr. Ike Ekweremadu has dismissed insinuation that there is division in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of the February 16 presidential election. He described as orchestrated attempts, reports linking him with divisions in the party, stressing that he cannot be dragged into any controversy that creates the impression of a divided house in the PDP. His media adviser, Uche Anichukwu said Ekweremadu will not be distracted by cheap blackmail, smear campaign, and extreme propaganda, while he reassured supporters that the PDP is united and focused on wresting power from the All Progressives Congress (APC). “After the PDP lost the presidency and majority status at the National Assembly in 2015, I made it clear that I would stand by the party, no matter what. It took other party stakeholders and I a lot of efforts, sacrifices, soul-searching, and painstaking negotiations to hold the party together and rebuild it. If I did not abandon the PDP at its darkest hour, it does not make the slightest sense to say that I abandoned it now that its sun is rising again. “Meanwhile, I have held separate meetings with our Vice Presidential candidate, Peter Obi and the Chairman, South East Governors Forum, Dave Umahi, to work out strategies for the success of our party and candidates in the coming elections. “We are also setting up a meeting of South East PDP stakeholders by weekend to continue to strategise on the coming elections. Sunday and Ichakpa Oigoga, urged the court to dismiss Kashamu’s suit for being incompetent, as it failed to disclose any infringement of his right, and for being an abuse of court processes. NDLEA in an affidavit in support of the preliminary objection deposed to by one of its litigation/exhibit officers, Kareem Olayinka, stated that the authority of the USA are currently seeking to have Kashamu extradited to their country to answer charges relating to the trafficking in heroin. And that the USA government had made the request sometimes in May 2015. The deponent also states that since the applicant began get wind of the extradition request he has filed multiplicity of law suits relating to the issue. Among the suits filed include: suit numbers FHC/L/CS/508/14, FHC/L/CS 508/2015, FHC/L/ CS/763/2015 and FHC/L/CS/479/2015, before Justice O. E. Abang, Justice Nasir Ibrahim Buba and Justice G. O. Kolawole. He added that the AGF successful prosecuted a d appeal against the judgment of Justice O. E. Abang in both substantive and contempt case and obtained judgments setting aside the decisions of the lower court in appeal numbers CA/L/1030/2015 and CA/L/1030A/205. He urged the court to dismiss Kashamu’s
suit as it failed to disclose any cause of action against AGF, for violation of his rights and that the multiplicity of actions continuously filed and maintained by the applicant against NDLEA is intend to annoy and divert its energy and attention from discharging its mandate to the nation. He also stated that it is apparent that Kashamu is only engaged in shopping for forum that will grant his desire relief by his multiplicity of his actions. At the resumed hearing of the matter on Monday, Kashamu’s lawyer, Mrs. Esom told the court that the matter is slated for hearing of her client’s motion on notice and NDLEA’s preliminary objection to the motion. However, NDLEA lawyer, Mr. J. N. Sunday, told the court that though, he is ready to proceed with the hearing of the applications but the fifth respondents, AGF, who the whole suit revolved round, is yet to file any application in the suit. Also, counsel to the DSS, M. O. Fajela, told the court that his client was just dragged into the matter, as the suit has been on since 2015. However, Justice Chukwujekwu Aneke, observed that the first, second and fifth respondents, that is the IGP, CP, Lagos and AGF, were not represented by any lawyer due to non-issuance of hearing notice on them. Justice Aneke consequently ordered that the hearing notice be issued and served on them, while adjourned the matter till March 5, for hearing of Kashamu’s motion on notice and NDLEA’s preliminary objection.

Aggrieved PDP support groups dump APC, return to Atiku Tunde Opalana, Abuja
More than 100 support groups that ditched the Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar have returned to the PDP after a brief stay in the All Progressives Congress (APC). These are part of about 145 PDP Support groups known that earlier abandoned their support for Atiku for the APC on allegations of marginalisation, ingratitude and lack of support. The group under the umbrella of The Coalition of Atikulate Leaders Forum, in a Press Conference on Monday at the PDP Presidential Campaign Headquarters, Legacy House, Abuja resolved to move out of APC and return to PDP. The Forum in a statement issued after the press conference and signed by its National Coordinator of the group, Pastor Franklin Eze and National Secretary, Oyegoke Olawale, the groups admitted they were aggrieved but stated that after reassurances from the Director General of Atiku Support Group, Math Yeduma, they resolved to return and work for the successful election of Atiku
Abubakar. The Coordinator dissociated the coalition from what he described as self serving activities of a few members who may still be working for the ruling party despite the retreat. He said, “We have come to state categorically that of the alleged 145 support groups, not less than 140 groups, as you can see, are still with His Excellency Alhaji Atiku Abubakar except for ‘Atiku reloaded’ support group, led by El-Mikedo and a few others like him who have decided to reduce the nobility associated with politics and politicking into a bread and butter business. “Therefore, let nobody use the names of our various groups to go about collecting money from APC as that amounts to impersonation, outright falsehood and political prostitution orchestrated on the altar of the spirit of Balaamism. That is the spirit of avarice and kleptomenia.” The coalition explained that the ruling party and its government has no respect for democratic institutions and uses official institutions to its advantage. “We cannot associate our groups to a government that have absolute and outright disregard for the

In its determination to put an end to the spate of insecurity in the state, the Ondo state government is set to organise a security summit in order to find lasting solution to security threats that have been ravaging the state for some months. Short News EFCC arraigns ex- Presidential spokesman, Okupe for N702m fraud Attacks: Saraki urges kinsmen to remain calm Andrew Orolua, Abuja
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Monday arraigned Chief Doyin Okupe, a former Senior Special Assistant to former President, Goodluck Jonathan, on a 59-count charge bordering on “money laundering and criminal diversion of funds” to the tune of N702, 000, 000 only. Okupe was brought before Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu of a Federal High Court, Maitama, along with two companies, Value Trust Investment Ltd and Abrahams Telecoms Ltd allegedly involved in the commission of the fraud. One of the counts reads: “That you, Dr. Doyin Okupe, being the Senior Special Assistant to President Goodluck Jonathan from July 2012 to May 2015, and being the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, and a signatory to the bank account of Abrahams Telecoms Ltd, on or about the 3rd October, 2014 in Abuja within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, directly took possession or control of the sum of N35 million, transferred to the account of Abrahams Telecoms Ltd from the account of the Office of the National Security
Adviser with the Central Bank of Nigeria purporting to be for special services when you reasonably ought to have known that the said fund formed part of the proceeds of an unlawful activity”. He pleaded “not guilty” to the charges. Upon his plea, the prosecuting counsel, Ibrahim Audu, asked for a date for “commencement of the trial”. However, Okupe’s counsel, Tolu Babaleiye, through a motion on notice dated December 17, 2018 prayed the court to admit the defendant to bail. “The defendant will in no way tamper with evidence since the proof of evidence is before the court that means investigation has been concluded,” he said. Babaleiye further urged the court to admit the defendant to bail on self recognizance adding that “he will not jump bail as he is well known”. While responding to the application, Audu argued that “the defendant was given administrative bail after he volunteered his statement thereafter, he was nowhere to be found until December 2018 in Lagos”. He further said that “there was nothing substantial in the defendant’s affidavit” adding that there is nothing to show that
the medical certificate is authentic and nothing to show it meets the requirements of the evidence act as it was electronically generated. “The court should exercise its discretion judicially and judiciously based on materials supplied before the court,” he added, stressing that the court should take into consideration, “the gravity of the punishment in the event of conviction on the charges brought against the defendant”. After listening to all the arguments, Justice Ojukwu granted bail to the defendant in the sum of N100 million with one surety in like sum. The judge further ordered that :“The surety must be resident within the jurisdiction of the court, and must depose to an affidavit of means, must have landed properties which must also be within the jurisdiction of the court. Must submit to the court tax clearance papers from 2016 to 2018, also have recent passport photograph. The surety and defendant must deposit their international passport to the court. The documents are to be deposited with the Deputy Chief Registrar Litigation of the court.” Justice Ojukwu, thereafter, adjourned to February 27, 28 and March 6, 2019 for trial.
Kehinde Akinpelu, Ilorin The Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki yesterday hurriedly returned to Ilorin from Erin- Ile in Oyun local government area of Kwara state where he had gone to address a political rally, to sympathise with his family members, who were attacked by the thugs of factional All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in the state, AbdulRahman AbdulRasaq Saraki, during his visit to Agbaji quarters, assessed level of damage done to property by the rampaging APC thugs. He, however, urged his people to remain calm and should not be provoked into retaliation or reprisal attacks. The Senate President, who trekked long distance to assess the level of destruction done to property, assured his people that their protection and safety is in the hands of God. Saraki added that the unfortunate incident of yesterday had justified his earlier claim that there were threats to his life, his family and supporters. He thanked them for remaining steadfast in their support for the Saraki political dynasty and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) where he is the national leader.

2019 Election: RTEAN tasks INEC on transportation MOU Idu Jude, Abuja The leadership of the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) has lamented the delay in signing the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between its Union and Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the movement of logistics on the forthcoming general election. In a press release by the Special Adviser on Media to the Executive President, Comrade Osakpamwan Eriyo, Ben Ogbemudia said the Ministry of Labour and Productivity and the Nigeria Employers Consultative Association (NECA) have also written to the Chairman of INEC, identifying with the current headship of RTEAN, but they are surprised for the delay in signing the MOU bearing in mind that the election is fast approaching. Ogbemudia said despite that some close Aides of INEC chairman confirmed receipt of the letter of the Minister of Labour, he wondered what is happening within the INEC Management staff in delaying the signing as their sisters Union has already signed theirs long ago.

Recipient of security votes must account for it Andrew Orolua, Abuja This appeal was against the judgment of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory at Abuja, in charge No FCT/ ABJ/CR/ 82/2007 convicting the appellant of 16 counts of Criminal breach of trust, nine counts of criminal misappropriation, one count of gratification and one count of accepting a valuable thing without consideration and sentencing him to varying custodial sentences, the longest of which is 14 years,the sentences which are without option of fine run concurrently. This belief is completely wrong. .........If the recipient of such funds cannot account for the use of such funds for the purpose it was meant and has not returned same to the Government treasury, then that is a clear case of stealing of public funds. In our country, Nigeria , there is a pervasive proclivity of public officers to regard or treat Security Votes given to them for the security of the State as their personal entitlement or funds, the expenditure of which they are not accountable to the government that gave them the funds to be used for the public purpose or the citizens for whose security it was meant. It is glaring from the totality of the forgoing that the trial court’s conviction of the appellant for the offences in Counts 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12,13,14,15,16,17,18,19, 20,25,,27,28,39,30,31, 33 and 36 was based on its belief of the prosecution’s evidence and disbelief of the defence evidence. By this appeal the appellant has invited this court to set aside the convictions on the ground that they are not justified by the evidence before the trial court. I have held that the trial courts belief of the testimonies of the prosecution witnesses are supported by the evidence before it and that such belief is reasonable. Therefore this court cannot interfere with the trial Court’s belief of the prosecution’s evidence and disbelief of the defence evidence and the interferences of facts arising from such belief.........
After convicting the appellant for the offences in coun ts1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12,13,14, 15,16,17,18,19,20,25,,27,2 8,39,30,31, 33 and 36 and after considering the allocutus of the appellant and before pronouncing the sentence for each offence ,the trial court stated thusly “I am morally outraged with the facts of this case. The citizens of Taraba State elected Reverend Jolly Tevoru Nyame ,a clergyman as Governor on three separate occasions which showed a consistent level of trust in him, Their expectations were so high and as a Reverend ,he must have been seen as an Epitome of Morality, piety Honesty and everything Good....... This is the first case of its kind where a Governor is found to have committed such impunity . The court must therefore impose a sentence that would hopefully serve as a deterrent to such other public officers, who may be similarly inclined to deep their hands into public Till. Accordingly, this court would be failing in its responsibilities ,if it fails to throw the book at the defendant. Having found the defendant guilty as charged in regard to these counts of the offences under criminal breach of trust ,the court hereby sentenced the defendant ,Rev. Jolly Tevoru Nyame to terms of imprisonment in each of these offences as follows. The above considerations of the trial court before it pronounced the sentences for each of the offences it found that the appellant committed substantially comply with the guiding principles prescribed in S. 311(2) and (3) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act 2015. It is obvious that the trial court did not consider the appropriateness of non custodial sentence as an option to a custodial sentence as required by S.311(2)(c) of ACJA. The trial Court was right to have punished the commission of the offences if criminal breach of trust by Public servant or agent with imprisonment without consideration of the appropriateness of a fine as an option. It has no discretion to make such consideration because S.315 of the Panel Code that provide for the punishment of such an offence requires the trial court to impose both an imprisonment term and fine and does not give the court the discretion to choose to impose a term of imprison or fine but both imprisonment and fine........ The trial court did not impose the additional punishment of fine it was bound by S.315 Panel Code Act to impose for criminal breach of trust . Accordingly, this court orders that in addition to the term of imprisonment imposed for each count of criminal breach of trust , the appellant shall pay fine of N100m for each of the offences in counts 1,2,6, fine of N50m for the offences in counts 10, 12,14, fine of N10m for each of offences in counts 16, 18,20,27,29,30,31and 33, fine of N5m for the offences in count 36. In the light if above issue No 11 was resolved in favour of the appellant in part. On the whole the appeal fails, except as regard the sentences imposed by the trial court. Therefore the judgment of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory in Criminal Case No FCT/ ABJ/ CR/ 82/2007delivered on 30/5/2018 by A.A.I.Banjoko J. is affirmed and upheld except with regards to the sentences imposed therein. The said sentences are set aside and replaced with the following sentences: Counts 1, 2, 6 twelve years imprisonment each and in addition fine of N100m each Count 8, twelve years imprisonment each and in addition fine of N50m ,counts 10, 12, 14, twelve years imprisonment each and in addition fine of N20m , Counts 16, 18, 20, 27, 29,30,31,33, twelve years imprisonment each and in addition fine of N10m each ,count 36 twelve years imprisonment and in addition fine of N5m. While Count 3,7,9,11,13,15,17,19,21,23,25, one year nine months with no option of fine. Count 4 five years imprisonment and count 5 four years imprisonment without option of fine. Infrastructure development: FG raises N1.16trn through sukuk, other Bonds in 2018 Motolani Oseni Not less than N1.16 trillion was raised through various bonds such as Green Bonds, Sukuk Bond and Savings Bonds by the Federal Government in 2018, to enable the nation finance fiscal and infrastructure deficits in the country. The Chief Executive Officer, The Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE), Mr Oscar Onyema, on Monday disclosed this at NSE’s 2018 market recap/2019 outlook in Lagos. Onyema said the government listed bonds worth N1.16 trillion during the period, alongside Eurobonds totalling 3.36 billion dollars to finance various infrastructure projects. “Projections of heavy government
borrowings to finance the planned infrastructure spend validated as Federal government listed N1.16 trillion in 2018,” he said. Onyema said the capital raising was dominated by the federal government having accounted for 79.30 per cent of bond issuances during the period to finance fiscal and infrastructure deficits. Consequently, he said NSE’s fixed income increased by 11.75 per cent to N10.17 trillion from N9.10 trillion in 2017. He stated that turnover also increased by 22.34 per cent compared with 2017 driven by a search for an alternative asset class opposed to equities. According to him, capital raising by corporates declined by 39.09 per cent with a total of N31. 47 billion raised in 2018. Onyema said the market also witnessed
50.53 per cent increase in foreign outflows during the period from N402.26 billion in 2017 to N605. 54 billion in 2018. He attributed the trend to attenuated foreign participation due to shift to higher yielding assets with lower risks in developed countries, coupled with the impending political risks in the coming elections. Onyema said the NSE market capitalisation in 2018 dropped by 14 per cent to close at N13.61 trillion against N11.73 trillion achieved in 2017. On investor participation, Onyema said foreign investors accounted for 50.87 per cent participation in 2018, while domestic investors accounted for 49.13 per cent. He said the exchange would continue to leverage existing technologies to boost domestic participation in the equities market. Onyema said NSE was committed to
making retail investors major drivers of the market. On 2019 outlook, he said market sentiments in the first half of the year would be driven by uncertainty in oil prices as well as the general elections. “We anticipate volatility in equities markets in first half of 2019, with enahnced stability post-election,” he added. Onyema said swift approval and implementation of the 2019 budget might have a positive impact on companies’ earnings and consumer spending. “Therefore, we anticipate a return of listings during the year with an uptick in market activity during the second half of 2019,” he said. Onyema said the exchange would continue to engage Federal and state governments as well as corporates to ensure enlistment of more companies on the bourse.
Manufactured goods unsold hit N149.23bn in 6 months - MAN Joy Obakeye Nigeria’s manufacturing sector recorded a static N149.23 billion inventory of unsold goods in the first half of 2018; according to the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria, (MAN). The preceding year, according to MAN’s half yearly review of the Nigerian economy, recorded higher figures with N159.59 billion and N161.53 billion. This implies that 2018 went down by within 6.5 and 7.6 percent respectively. The figures, MAN stated, was induced by real consumption due to inflationary pressure; smuggling, counterfeiting and cloning of
Nigerian manufactured products as well as high cost operating environment. The report revealed that the analysis conducted showed that a greater part of the unsold goods were majorly in the Basic Metal, Iron & Steel Fabricated Metal group (N28.41 billion or 19.03 percent); Chemical and Pharmaceutical sector (N24.36 billion or 16.2 percent): Food, Beverage and Tobacco (N19.5 billion or 13.1 percent); and Domestic/ Industrial Plastic, Rubber & Foam (N18.96 billion or 13.4 percent). “Inventory of unsold finished goods in Basic Metal, Iron & Steel Fabricated Metal stood at N28.41 billion in the first half of 2018, representing N18.71 billion increased over N9.7 billion recorded in the corresponding
half of 2017 and N2.98 billion (9.4 percent) of N31.39 billion of the preceding half. The recorded inventory in the sector is largely due to the sluggishness of global steel market following the US protectionist stance for its steel sector”. The report also showed that manufacturing investment stood at N305.56 billion, representing N23.72 billion (7.2 percent) decline and N128.87 billion (72.9 percent) increase over N329.28 billion recorded in the corresponding half of 2017 and N176.69 billion of the preceding half respectively. “Sectoral group analysis shows that the highest proportion of total manufacturing investment in the first half of 2018 went to Food, Beverage and Tobacco group.
Investment in the sector stood at N86.94 billion, N4.13 billion (4.5 percent) lower than N91.07 billion of the corresponding half of 2017 and N14.2 billion (19.5 percent) of N72.74 billion of the preceding half”. The Food, Beverage and Tobacco sectoral group also accounted for most of the jobs created in the manufacturing sector, creating 2,999 jobs; Domestic/Industrial Plastic & rubber (1,374 jobs); Basic Metal, Iron & Steel (1,229 jobs); and chemical & pharmaceutical group (1,209 job) in the period. The associations’ report lauded the performance of the manufacturing sector in 2018. While adding that, consumption was below par, despite the macroeconomic developments within the period.

inclusion target of 80 per cent by 2020. Policy documents to be unveiled at the conference expected to attract over 400 delegates are the Revised National Financial Inclusion Strategy (NFIS 2.0), the Financial Literacy Framework, the Consumer Protection Framework and the Consumer Education framework. Details obtained from the CBN on Monday stated, the conference also aims to ensure that
new comers into the financial inclusion bracket are adequately protected and educated in line with the provisions of the policy documents. Other objectives of the two-day conference to be declared open by the CBN Governor, Mr. Godwin Emefiele are to update participants on the growing sophistication of the financial market, the competitive environment in which financial services providers operate, and the benefit and
value of providing access to financial services among others. While hoping to enhance consumer confidence and trust in the financial services to facilitate progress towards achieving 80 per cent financial inclusion target by 2020, the CBN and other stakeholders also seek to obtain customer feedback on how best to implement the financial inclusion policies.

Why commercial banks are cautious in lending to real sector - Experts Motolani Oseni Due to 2019 general elections, which has heigthened the economy uncertainty in the country, fianancial analysts believed that commercial banks may be cautious of lending to real sector this year, rather invested in the federal government riskfree investments that include Treasury Bills (T-Bills), among other instruments. To this end, predicted that banking sector appetite for loan growth might standstill this year.
For instance, analysts at United Capital in its ‘Nigeria Outlook 2019: Sailing Through the Storm’ said, “While Nigerian banks require an aggressive loan growth to plug recent pressure on interest income, we do not see the appetite for loan growth improving considerably in 2019. “With election uncertainties expected to dominate events in the better part of H1-19, expansion of loan book will remain muted by the socio-political considerations as observed in 2018. “Again, although the desire to drive interest income growth through credit
origination may improve in H2-19, we are of the view that two factors may constrain a hasty deployment of funds to risk assets. “Firstly, events in the global environment may keep yields on treasury securities elevated. Secondly, depending on the outcome of the election, a delayed post-election policy signal may imply that uncertainty in the local economy will persist.” They noted that commercial banks are to overweight federal government securities in the first half (H1) of 2019. “Going into 2019, higher yields on
sovereign instruments in the build-up to the general election and a potential post-election uncertainty, suggest that banks would rather sustain the recent deployment of funds to financial assets in a flight to safety. “Additionally, policy normalization in the US and increased liquidity mopup exercise by the CBN further supports this position, especially in H1-19. The yield environment is however expected to retrace in H2-19 in the event of a successful and smooth transition”, they said.
Dormant accounts, unclaimed dividends should be used to bridge housing deficit - NIESV Ladesope Ladelokun Former Chairman, Nigerian Institution of Estate Surveyors and Valuers (NIESV) Lagos Chapter, Mr. Samuel Ukpong, on Monday said that dormant accounts and unclaimed dividends should be used to fund housing gap. Ukpong, revealed this in Lagos on Monday, where he explained that these avenues could be used to bridge the gap between costs of houses and income of end users. According to him, housing delivery is not rocket science as it has become standardised. He said that for affordable housing to be funded, it had to be durable, saying that it
needed to be standardised as well as have strong estate management. Ukpong lamented that lack of adequate funding had been a major challenge hindering effective housing delivery and growth of the housing sector. “Housing delivery is not rocket science. Housing has become standardised. “This is how other countries do it. There is no other way yet. “To talk about the affordable housing gap for employees who put money into it, this can be done by CBN through dormant accounts. “Many of our banks are holding dormant accounts and the money runs into billions of naira. Let this money be used in housing development.
“The Security and Exchange Commission (SEC) through unclaimed dividends can also assist. Concerns on China slowdown pushes Oil to $60/brrl Chukwuemeke Iwelunmo Oil slipped to around $60 a barrel on Monday after data showed weakening imports and exports in China, the world’s second-largest oil consumer, raising the prospect of a slowdown in fuel demand. China’s exports fell by the most in two years in December while imports contracted, official figures showed, pointing to further weakness in what is also the world’s second-largest economy. Brent crude, the international
benchmark, fell 46 cents to $60.02 a barrel by 1431 GMT, trading as low as $59.27 intraday. U.S. crude slipped 52 cents to $51.07. “Both imports and exports disappointed expectations and are set to revive fears about a global growth slowdown,” said Norbert Ruecker, head of macro and commodity research at Swiss bank Julius Baer. Crude gave up an earlier gain following the release on Monday of the Chinese figures, the latest to point to an economic slowdown since the second half of 2018. Asian and European stock markets also slipped.
“Oil prices are getting weighted down by the prospects of weaker economic growth in China,” Stephen Innes of futures brokerage Oanda said in a report. “This data drives home just how negative of an impact trade war is having on the Chinese and perhaps global economy.” Despite concern about the outlook, there is little sign that Chinese oil demand has weakened yet. China’s crude imports in December surged nearly 30 percent from a year earlier, Reuters calculations of customs data showed.
Oil is drawing support from supply cuts led by the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and non-OPEC allies, including Russia. The group of producers, known as OPEC+, agreed in December to cut oil output by 1.2 million barrels per day starting in January to prevent a supply glut and boost prices. With the rise in Brent from a dip below $50 in December, OPEC officials appear more confident that prices will be supported by output declines in January as producers implement the deal.

Delta South Senatorial seat: Projections, permutations and Uduaghan’s chances Stories by Patrick Okohue Barring any unforeseen circumstances, the 2019 general elections will kick off with the Presidential and National Assembly elections on Saturday, 16th February 2019. As it stands in Delta South Senatorial District, the All Progressives Congress (APC), candidate in the district, Dr. Emmanuel Eweta Uduaghan seem to be enjoying more favourable chances to win the seat. A lot of factors are currently working in his favour, chief among them being the popularity he earned while in the saddle as the governor of Delta State. Emmanuel Uduaghan who is the immediate-past executive governor of the state has so far garnered over 50 endorsements from eminent political groups in and around the senatorial district. This is unprecedented in Delta South and probably one of the biggest electoral boosts for the politician, stemming from his sterling qualities and achievements while in office as the governor. Investigations show that if one counts every infrastructure dotted all over the state, a greater percentage of them would definitely bear his fingerprint. The people of Delta South Senatorial District are also disenchanted with Uduaghan’s closest rival who incidentally is the incumbent senator representing the zone. By May 2019 Senator James Manager would have spent 16 years in the red chamber. Those spoken to said they were tired of his representation, and that they have not felt much impact of the senator, who would have served out four terms as a senator, but is vying for the position once again on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Uduaghan’s vision and plans for Delta South which indirectly touches on the Niger Delta region seem to have endeared him the more to the electorates. Aside from him, no other aspirant has been able to tell the people their plans, just as he continues to run issue-based campaign, laying out achievable programmes for the people of Delta South. In his words, he is in the race to offer his people quality and effective representation that will put smile on their faces if given the mandate on February 16. While adopting Dr Uduaghan as its preferred choice for the senate seat, one of the groups, the National Association of Itsekiri Graduates (NAIG) had asserted: “Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan with his wealth of experience as the immediate-past governor of Delta State will bring his experience to bear on his job as the senator representing Delta South Senatorial District. “He is the most respected of all the candidates, he is a planner and strategist, he is development-oriented and that is what Delta South Senatorial District wants; besides that he cares for the downtrodden.” Ijaw Liberation Movement (ILM) had supported the claim. According to the group, “We followed Dr. Uduaghan’s painstaking effort to develop our area, nay the whole state, while he was governor of Delta State. We are also aware that he stepped down for our son to continue a few years ago, so he is the most
Uduaghan suitable person for the job now.” Dr. Uduaghan is Itsekiri, and for the 2019 elections, that is a plus. Since 1999, no Itsekiri has occupied that position. In the interest of equity and fair play, his ethnic stock places him better in the hearts of the people of the three major ethnic groups making up Delta South which include Ijaw, Itsekiri and Isoko. The last time an Itsekiri man occupied the senate seat was in 1979; that is about 40 years ago. From 1979 till the current dispensation, five senators have represented Delta South Senatorial District. Out of these five, two were from Isoko (Senator Stella Omu and Senator Francis Okpozo of blessed memory) and another two were from the Ijaw tribe (Chief E.K Clark and Senator James Manager, the incumbent). The first and only senator who was from the Itsekiri stock was Chief Franklin O. M Atake in 1979. More welcoming is the fact the political groups which pledge support for his electoral bid are spread across the three ethnic groups. Prominent among them are Ijaw Liberation Movement (ILM), Isoko Political Revolutionary Force, (IPRF) and Itsekiri Youths Vanguard. What’s more, the magnanimity displayed by Uduaghan when he withdrew from the race for Senator James Manager to continue in 2015 in order to ensure that peace reigned in the state was applauded by all and sundry who now believe the time has come for him to give a shot at the position with their full backing. So as Nigerians look forward to the elections coming up in the next few weeks, the Delta South Senatorial District electorates are ready to roll out their drums to welcome the most perfect and fruitful senate representation in Dr. Uduaghan.

Lagos guber: Agbaje, Sanwo-Olu, others speak of their plans for a better state at debate AS the Lagos State governorship elections continue to gather momentum, candidates of some political parties in the state Sunday came together in a debate in their efforts to convince the people that they have what it takes to move the state forward. The debate which was organised by the Platform, a religious and political organization, featured four of the gubernatorial candidates including Babajide Sanwo-Olu of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Jimi Agbaje of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Owolabi Salis of the Alliance for Democracy (AD) and Babatunde Badamosi of the Action Democratic Party (ADP). The candidates spoke and on wide range of issues from the traffic gridlocks in the Lagos metropolis to power, educational sector and health. They, however, differed on the methods and strategy to take Lagos State to the next level, while agreeing that technology was crucial to the advancement of the state and its infrastructures. Candidate of the ADP, Babatunde Badamosi, opined that the traffic nightmare that Lagosians have contended with for years can be solved by focusing on rail transport, use of barges and devolution of powers. “There are a number of ways to tackle this problem. The most obvious one is rail. Barges to lift containers from wharfs and take them to lighter terminals all around Lagos, and, thirdly, devolution of powers. It’s time we started this discussion about the devolution of
power.” On his part, the PDP candidate, Agbaje promised to empower the local government areas and develop the grassroots, which according to him was the key in transforming the state. “We have to get the local governments working again because the grassroots play a great role in making state function optimally,” Agbaje said. Agbaje further stressed that planning was crucial if Lagos State must overcome its problem of traffic gridlock According to him, the idea is to have even development across Lagos State so that you are having less of movement from one end of Lagos to the other,” the pharmacist turned politician said. Sanwo-Olu of the APC on his part promised to tackle the problem of traffic gridlock if elected into office. The APC candidate vowed to make the gridlock in the Apapa axis of the state a thing of the past in less than four months. Sanwo-Olu further promised to revolutionise education in the state and provide infrastructures and manpower across hospitals in the state. Also speaking on the traffic congestion in the state, Owolabi Salis, candidate of the AD, said he will revive the rail transport which had been abandoned and effectively manage the resources of Lagos State. “If am elected governor I will change the transport system in the state and the government is not paying enough attention to that sector,” Salis said.
CACOL condemns alleged underhand dealings to withdraw petition before EFCC The Centre for AntiCorruption and Open Leadership (CACOL), has condemned the alleged demand for a sum of N50mn (Fifty Million Naira) by two Human Rights Activists, Dandy Eze (President of the Path of Peace Initiatives) and one Solomon Johnson, to help facilitate the withdrawal of a petition written against Wahum Nigeria Limited and currently being investigated by the EFCC (Economic and Financial
Crimes Commission) according to a newspapers report on Monday. In a Release issued by CACOL’s Coordinator of Media and Publications, Adegboyega Otunuga, on behalf of the organisation’s Executive Chairman, Mr. Debo Adeniran, he remarked, “It is a trite saying that, ‘He who comes to equity must come with clean hands’, and what this means is that, as a whistleblower, you cannot afford to blow hot and cold at the same time.
“The two accomplices in this matter were said to have written a petition to the Nigeria’s anti-graft agency, EFCC, sometime last year (2018) and in the process of the anti-graft agency’s investigation of the crux of the petition, it was discovered that these same Activists had, in the course of petitioning, approached the management of same company under investigation, to solicit for ‘settlement’ to make them have a
change of heart and request for a withdrawal. “As an anti-graft organisation, CACOL decries any untoward attitude that could undermine the fight against corruption, a social malaise we all agreed has done serious damage to the psyche of the nation and that is probably singularly responsible for most of our woes as a nation. It is in the light of this that we deem it fit to condemn such contradictory acts,
especially from those we believe should know better as you cannot use corruption to fight corruption. “It is also instructive to warn that efforts should be made by relevant authorities towards ensuring that possibilities of any set-up or blackmail are avoided so as not to bring into disrepute or disdain, the collective fight against corruption by both the government agencies and the Civil Society,” the group said.

Table Tennis: Quadri, Abiodun retain Portuguese Cup with Sporting Nigeria’s duo of Aruna Quadri and Bode Abiodun won the Portuguese Cup for a fifth time in a row on Sunday with Sporting who beat GDCS Juncal 3-0 to retain the their crown. Playing the first game against Russian Andrei Bukin, Aruna wasted no time to dismiss the Russian with a 3-0 (11-5, 11-2, 11-6) trouncing, according to a report monitored on the Portuguese Table Tennis Federation website. Diogo Carvalho also defeated Romanian Mihai Sargu 3-2 (11-4, 8-11,

11-2, 11-13, 11-7). The partnership of Bode Abiodun and Diogo Carvalho completed the rout for Sporting when they overcame the duo of David Bessa and Andrei Bukin 3-0 (11-2, 11-4, 11-9) to lift the trophy for the fifth time in a row. To berth in the men’s final, Sporting had defeated ADC Ponta do Pargo in the semi-finals (3-1), the CD São Roque in the quarterfinals (3-0) and CTM Lagos in the round of 16 (3-0). Sporting have now won 26 Portuguese titles.
One of the major sponsors of the Nigeria Football Federation, Aiteo Group, has expressed determination in their quest to make the Confederation of Africa Football Awards better in the years ahead. The Senior Manager, Corporate Communications in Aiteo, Ndiana-Abasi Matthew, who stated this at the weekend at the company’s office in Lekki, Lagos also added that the organization would continue to contribute to the development of football
and sports in general on the continent and beyond. Matthew said: “We are proud with our social responsibility role in the country because within a short time Aiteo is noted worldwide as a big supporter of football in the world. “The CAF Awards will get bigger and better in the years ahead and we are also going to make our presence felt better in all our sponsorship roles in Nigeria. Sport is massive in the country especially football because it is a unifying factor
over the years.” Aiteo Group, an integrated energy conglomerate, is the sponsors of the Federation Cup in Nigeria and the outfit is also footing the bills of national team coaches. The outfit sponsors the CAF Awards which first took place last year in Accra, Ghana and the second edition held last week in Dakar, Senegal. “We are enjoying the partnership with the NFF and we also believe we are making Nigerians enjoy the game better,” Matthew added.

Tottenham’s Mousa Dembele faces Beijing Guoan medical ahead of £9 million move Tottenham midfielder Mousa Dembele is travelling to Hong Kong to undergo a medical ahead of his £9m move to Beijing Sinobo Guoan. Spurs accepted an offer from the Chinese Super League side last week, with the 31-year-old Belgium international now set to bring an end to his six-and-a-half-year spell in north London. Dembele’s Tottenham contract expires at the end of the season, which would have allowed him to leave the Premier League club on a free transfer. However, Tottenham have made the decision to allow Dembele to leave now so they receive a transfer fee for a man who has made 249 appearances for the club. Dembele, who has not played for Spurs since November due to an ankle injury, has been keen on a move to China since the summer. Murray bows out of Australian Open after epic comeback Andy Murray’s hopes of a fairytale swansong at the Australian Open were crushed in the first round on Monday in Melbourne. Roberto Bautista Agut held off a thrilling fightback from the ailing Briton to claim a 6-4 6-4 6-7(5) 6-7(4) 6-2 epic. Though locked in a losing battle with his troublesome right hip, the former world number one whipped the Melbourne Arena crowd into a frenzy.
This was when he battled back from two sets down to push the match into a fifth. It seemed the momentum was all Murray’s, but it was all a mirage as Bautista Agut rallied to break the Scot twice and roar to a 5-1 lead. Murray raised his racquet to salute the crowd before his final service game. But his fans could not prevent Bautista Agut serving out the match to love and ending the Scot’s brave resistance after four hours and nine minutes.
