the exportation of crude oil in the third quarter of 2018 was N4.146 trillion, which is an increase of 9.11 per cent over Q2 2018 amount of N3.76 trillion, a 13.68 per cent increase over N3.57 trillion in Q1 2018, and 21.5 per cent increase over N3.25 trillion in Q4 2017. The statistics office also reported that the top 5 countries Nigeria exported crude oil to include India (N719.16 billion), Spain (N463.08 billion), France (N422.52
billion), South Africa (N334.98 billion), and Netherlands (N260.73 billion). However, the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), sometime in August 2018 said Nigeria earned about $26 billion in the first seven months of 2018 from the exportation of crude oil. The stagnancy the industry faced in the second quarter of 2018 was as a result of Nigeria’s crude oil exports under pressure because the United
States flooded Europe market with a large volume of crude oil. The Brent, against which Nigeria’s oil is priced, rose by $0.37 to $74.43 per barrel within this period as compared to around $66 at the start of the year. The relatively high prices brought about by a pact in OPEC in cutting output jointly by 1.8 million barrels per day, coupled with the surging US output, made it harder to sell Russian, Nigerian and other oil grades in Europe.

Alleged raid on CJN house: EFCC to sue Fani-Kayode, Odumakin over fake news Andrew Orolua, Doosuur Iwambe, Abuja
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) says it will file a libel suit against FaniKayode, Yinka Odumakin “and other purveyors of the evil news” over claims that the agency raided the house of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen. Reacting to rumours making the round on social media that operatives of the commission raided and effect the arrest of Justice Onnoghen, the EFCC in a statement by its acting Spokesman, Tony Orilade, described the news as a figment of the imagination of the purveyor of the fake news. This is just as another Court, the National Industrial Court, has restrained the Federal Government from proceeding further with the trial of Justice Onnoghen pending the determination of the substantive suit before it. Justice Onnoghen was to be arraigned on Monday by the Federal Government before the Code of Conduct Tribunal on six counts, for alleged false asset declaration based on a petition by a group, the Anti-corruption, Research and Data-based Initiatives. The matter was however adjourned by the tribunal till Tuesday, January 22 due to improper service of the summons on CJN Onnoghen. In a ruling delivered on Friday evening, the National
Industrial Court granted the ex-parte motion suspending temporarily further action by the parties to suit involving the trial of CJN Onnoghen pending the determination of an application challenging the CCT trial. The ex parte application was filed by an applicant, Peter Abang. Justice Sanusi Kado granted the interim order to stop the CCT from proceeding with the trial pending the determination of the suit challenging Onnoghen’s false asset charge. The ruling which was published on the website of the industrial court restrained the CCT chairman, Danladi Umar; the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris and the Justice Minister, Abubakar Malami from proceeding with the hearing, pending the determination of the substantive application before the court which will be heard on January 21. Meanwhile, the EFCC has sad that it will immediately initiate legal action against the arrowhead of the fake news that its operatives raided the CJN’s residence, FaniKayode and Odumakin. The EFCC while describing the news as a deliberate attempt to drag the commission’s name to the mud said that its operatives never went to the house of the CJN for arrest neither was invitation extended to him. The statement read in part: “The attention of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission,
EFCC, has been drawn to the falsehood which has been spreading on the social media that the EFCC has arrested the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen. This is not only a figment of the imagination of the purveyor of the fake news, but an evil machination by the creator and carriers of the news aimed at creating anarchy in the country. “For the record, the EFCC never went to the house of the CJN for arrest neither was invitation extended to him. “Several calls and short messages received all point to the fact that the brains behind the fake news had one thing in mind: to act as agent of destabilisation. We would not give in to their plots. “One of the architect of the fake news, Femi Fani-Kayode, was quoted as saying “Why have the EFCC surrounded the home of CJN Onnoghen and why are they seeking to arrest him? These people want Nigeria to burn! Buhari call off your dogs before it is too late! This is a democracy and not a gestapo state! In the name of God let this madness stop”. “Another arrowhead of fake news, Yinka Odumakin, also shared an illegal and false video which has gone viral. “We want to assure Nigerians that while we would fight corruption in line with the mandate setting up the Commission, agents of darkness in the likes of Femi Fani-Kayode, Yinka Odumakin and their cohorts, would never
two weeks, maximum three weeks. “It is my judgment that we will be doing ourselves some good if we take second reading of the budget. “That is, we will take the debate and general principles of the bill and then refer it to the committees on appropriation of the two chambers at least before we go,” he said. The leader of the senate further said it was important for the national assembly to consider the minimum wage bill as soon as it is presented by President Muhammadu Buhari to the legislature. He stressed that passing the bill would help bring succour to workers. “It is crucial that we pass the bill on national minimum wage. I believe that the Executive has played its part. “I have no idea what it is at the moment, but I believe that it is one of those bills we should expedite legislative process on to get it passed to ensure that there is stability in
the workforce. “The workforce is what we rely on for the implementation of our various programmes and projects as a government. “I believe that when the bill comes, we should be able to do justice to it within the period we will be around. “We should be able to slate it for first, second reading at least, and maybe immediately we resume we will pass it through third reading. “This is to ensure that the workers get a fair deal,” he said. On the performance of the Senate as the Eight Senate winds up, Lawan said it was unfortunate that the Upper Chamber started on a tumultuous note. He urged his colleagues to maximise the remaining period up until June to work for the development of the nation. The National Assembly proceeded on its Christmas break on December 20 to resume today, January 16.

be able to manipulate the people against the Commission. “We also want to assure FaniKayode, Yinka Odumakin and other purveyors of the evil news to be ready to defend their actions in the court of law as the EFCC will file libel suit against them without further delay”, the statement added. Also, the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) Justice Walter Onnoghen, has debunked reports that his residence was on Tuesday invaded
by EFCC operatives. Reacting to the report which gained traction in several social media platforms on Tuesday, Senior Special Adviser to the CJN on Media, Mr. Awassam Bassey, described it as false news. “I really don’t know where they got the information from. So many media men were here earlier with cameras over the same report. But what I can tell you for now is that there was no such thing. It is false news”, Bassey said.
Buhari, other dignitaries honour fallen heroes NASS to prioritise budget, minimum wage upon resumption – Senate Leader with wreath laying The Leader of the Senate, Sen. Ahmad Lawan, says the National Assembly will prioritise the consideration of the 2019 budget and the passage of minimum wage bill upon resumption. Lawan, who made this known in an interview with newsmen in Abuja, said the lawmakers would not hesitate in attending to the bills. He said that though they would be constrained by time in view of preparations for the 2019 general elections, they would work extensively on the bills within the available time. “We should be able to work hard to pass those bills that are fundamental and central to revamping the economy. “Bills that are central to reengineering and reorientating the social environment, and generally making Nigeria a stable and a safe country; we are determined to do that. “The 2019 budget, for instance, is central even though we have to break at a point; shortly after resumption, say

A’Court reserves judgment in SDP Presidential ticket tussle Andrew Orolua, Abuja
The Court of Appeal, Abuja division, on Tuesday, reserved judgment in the appeal challenging the decision of an Abuja High Court that declared former Information Minister, Professor Jerry Gana, the presidential candidate of Social Democratic Party (SDP) for this year presidential election. The three man panel of the Court of Appeal reserved judgment in the appeal filed by former Cross River State Governor, Donald Duke, after counsel representing parties in the suit adopted
and argued their written addresses. The panel, however, said date for its judgment in the suit would be communicated to parties. Duke, who was dissatisfied with ruling of the FCT High Court which upturned his last October victory at the party primary, and he had approached the appellate court to reverse the decision. Justice Hussein BabaYusuf of the FCT High Court sitting in Maitama, had on December 15, 2018, sacked Duke as Presidential candidate of the SDP. Duke had won the SDP presidential primary with a total of 812 votes and
was declared winner and candidate of the SDP but Gana, however, challenged the victory of Duke on the grounds that he ought not to have participated in the presidential primary of the SDP which was zoned to the Northern part of the country. Gana had in his suit urged the court to void Duke’s emergence and declare him (Gana) who hailed from the North and scored the second highest number of votes as authentic candidate of the SDP in the 2019 presidential election on the grounds that Duke’s participation contravened the party’s principle of zoning.
In his judgment, Justice Baba-Yusuf agreed with Gana that the emergence of the former governor of Cross River State as Presidential candidate of the SDP violated the zoning and rotation formula provided in section 15(3) of the party’s constitution. He subsequently voided the election of Duke and declared the former Minister of Information, Jerry Gana, as the authentic presidential candidate of the party ahead of the 2019 elections. Not satisfied with the judgment, Duke through his counsel, approached the Court of Appeal in Abuja to reverse the decision of Justice Baba-Yusuf.

New IGP assumes office, assures of hitch-free elections Continued from page 3 and also Assistant Inspector General of Police in-charge of Zone 5 Police Command Headquarters, Benin, Edo State. Reacting to the appointment, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) charged the acting Inspector General of Police, Adamu Mohammed, to immediately commence the re-engineering of the Nigeria Police to restore professionalism and adherence to rules of engagement in the Force. This is just as the party berated the outgoing Inspector General, Ibrahim Idris, for a shameful and partisan tenure, which destroyed professionalism in the police and compromised the lives and security of Nigerians, adding that he must be held accountable for all the atrocities he committed while in office. The party’s spokesman, Kola Ologbondiyan, in a statement, said the former IGP defied the need to secure troubled areas and watched carelessly while an integral part of the nation was engulfed in bloody clashes. The PDP charged the new Police boss to learn a lesson from the “shameful end” of Idris as IGP by immediately setting up the process of reorientating and insulating the Force from partisan politics, while subjecting it to the tenets of democracy and the rule of law. He said: “Idris will also be remembered as that Police Officer, who had a penchant
for framing innocent Nigerians with ridiculous allegations. Throughout his inglorious tenure, he functioned as the commander of the militant wing of the APC, just to retain his office and remain in power”. PDP urged the new police chief to avoid the pitfalls of the last IGP, who has gone down in history as the most corrupt, devious and reckless police officer to hold the post of the IGP in Nigeria. The party further advised the new police boss “to remove all templates of election rigging contained in the hand-over note that will be presented to him by Idris Ibrahim. The PDP said Ibrahim Idris will be remembered as the only IGP in Nigeria’s political history, who surrendered the responsibilities of his exalted office to the whims and caprices of politicians who share courtesies with the Presidency. “The new IGP must also urgently take steps to address the bastardization of promotion in the Police under the last IGP, where officers due for promotion were denied and only those endorsed by a cabal or who have enough money to buy their way through were promoted. This is in addition to immediately setting up a process that guarantee proper welfare of officers and men of the Nigeria police. “He must note that the whole world is watching him and we urge him not to fail the nation, which he owes his allegiance,” the PDP counseled.

Polls: No compromise on corps members’ security, welfare – NYSC The National Youths Service Corps (NYSC) says the security and welfare of corps members that will participate in the 2019 general elections remains its top priority and no compromise on it. Coordinator of the scheme in Anambra State, Mr. Kehinde Aremu, said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Awka on Tuesday. Aremu said NYSC in the state had at least, 10, 000 corps members who would be available to work as Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as ad-hoc staff during the elections.
He said nursing mothers and pregnant women would not be allowed to participate as Poll Officers (PO) due to their peculiar condition. The coordinator said 326 corps members had been approved to work with INEC for the distribution of Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) to electorate in 326 electoral wards in the state. Aremu said he had scheduled tour of the 21 local governments of the state to engage council administrators, community leaders, politicians, Divisional Police Officers and other security agencies on corps
members’ safety. “Anambra has about 13, 200 corps members and about 10, 000 will be available for the election exercise. This is because nursing mothers and pregnant women will not be allowed to take part. “For NYSC as a scheme, we shall not compromise the safety of our children, so we are having stakeholders’ engagement to ensure their security is guaranteed. “However, security in Anambra is good, the assurance is encouraging, at the Inter-Agency Consultative Forum for Election Safety level, we have raised concern which have
been adequately addressed,” he said. Aremu said NYSC would ensure that INEC make full disclosure on the welfare of corps members’ and duly transmit their honorarium to those that would take part in the elections. “In the past, there have been issues of nonpayment or shortchanging of corps members who participated in elections, but this time, we want to guard against it. “INEC should tell the corps members selected for the exercise what their welfare is going to be like in terms of allowances, feeding,
and transportation and pay them accordingly. “They should clarify these issues with the NYSC headquarters so that we don’t have problem in the state at the end of the day. “I have no doubt that corps members will discharge their election duty with integrity and patriotism, we have told them what the society expects from them, right from their days in camp. “We have also told them that being corps members does not immune them from prosecution, they should not act against electoral laws and process.”

It has come to a point where a governor is asking for emergency rule. In fact the governor of kastina state lamented that he is overwhelmed with security situation. “If Buhari cannot provide security in his own state, do you think he would provide it in Osun state? When Buhari was coming to government, he promised and told us that one of his cardinal focus his restructuring. When he came to power, he told us that he does not know or understand the meaning of restructuring, that is a clean, clear deceit”, he said.
Oyinlola, who is the National coordinator of the Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP), said member parties stand by their resolution to adopt Atiku Abubakar as a consensus Presidential candidate in the February 16 election. He said “we have resolved that the only person that can rescue Nigeria from misrule, despotism, poverty and insecurity is Atiku Abubakar”. The National Chairman of PDP, Prince Uche Secondus assured party members that the present administration of the APC in Osun State is temporal as the State will soon be restored back to PDP through legal process at the election tribunal. The governor said “the marginalization of Rivers State would worsen should Buhari get a second term.” He reminded them that as a Minister during the Jonathan administration, he attracted key projects to Rivers State, despite having issues with the Amaechi administration at the time. He said that Amaechi has no reason not to attract projects to the state. Governor Wike added that even the Former Rivers APC Factional Governorship aspirant who claimed to be a billionaire businessman had no investments in the state. Highpoint of the meeting was an interactive session between Governor Wike and the youth leaders.

Nigeria, transparency and salient issues
Soji Apampa
2018, a milestone year in which impunity caused a messy divorce, on a global scale, between transparency and accountability. Whether it was the killing of a Saudi journalist writing for a U.S. paper, in the Saudi Embassy, in Turkey or the attempted murder on British soil, of a former Russian Spy, some events happened in ‘full glare’ of the world, leaving an undisputable ‘smoking gun.’ And yet those involved seem to have gotten away with it simply by acting in high office, with unprecedented impunity – as if daring the world with a smug, “and what are you going to do about it?” Meanwhile, back in Nigeria, accountability seems to have accepted to undergo ‘marriage counselling’ with transparency, following the ‘arrest and prosecution’ of impunity. The present administration vowed to fight corruption, but many are divided over how successful they have been in that quest. However, on the issue of a war they didn’t declare – that against impunity, few are those who can dispute the level of success they have achieved. Those who acted with impunity under the Jonathan regime seem unable to continue in that vein, too scared, perhaps, to flaunt the wealth they have amassed in their reckless pursuits. The 2019 elections now seem to be giving them a platform and voice with which to stage a comeback. The scene is now set for an epic, battle royal – a ferocious war amongst many combatants sworn only to one purpose – the ouster of the Muhammadu Buhari administration to reinstate ‘the way
things were before.’ This is not a political piece however, but an attempt to appeal to sense and reason. Let me digress for a moment. Some women I know are great fans of Nollywood and long before the renaissance of going to see madein-Nigeria movies at the cinema, these ladies religiously followed the new titles released each week by the “marketers.” They could tell, simply by the line-up of the cast whether a movie would be interesting or boring and could often tell the storyline simply from the theme song – to them, these are very Nigerian stories and those stories follow a pattern. Looking at the array of combatants for the coming electoral battle in 2019 and the theme song they are chorusing, even if they have changed the movie title, should the discerning expect the storyline to be different or should they expect a more interesting story from these actors they have come to know so well? Can those who made a fortune out of acting with impunity be trusted to midwife a reconciliation between transparency and accountability? Can those who made a fortune at the expense of poor Nigerians now be the trusted architects of a more inclusive economy? Like it or not, all our politicians have seen the global rise of populism. Many will be seduced by the politician’s ability to couch in populist terms the lust for wealth-by-all-means and the lust for power to keep it coming; or the greedy longings for what the Nigerian rich flaunt, regardless of the means adopted in acquiring it or the selfish reliance
on material resources as a yardstick of national progress. The battle lines are drawn between those who believe the ends justify the means, so long as the economy “grows” (meaning money is swirling around freely again – the way things were) versus those who seek more sustainable paths to growth through building the right societal foundations, including good ethics and values like transparency and accountability in pursuit of a Society that is good for all. A vote for this brand of populist rhetoric is a vote for the destruction of the foundations of our society and a mortgaging of the already slim chances we have at making a proper recovery from years of abuse by various brands of dictators. We need a government that is interested in and capable of identifying the constraints to growth in each community in Nigeria, one capable of finding innovative ways of removing such constraints in ways that enable the majority of Nigerians see a sustainable increase in their incomes. A government that is able to help each citizen living on less than N500 a day (and that is over 125 million Nigerians) achieve at least N1,500-N2,000 a day, through productivity gains. This should include women and Nigeria’s teeming youth, persons living with disability and the chronically unemployed. A government that is able to develop policies that encourage the existing value-chains incorporate the poor as producers, employees and customers to improve
their livelihoods and spark off inclusive business models. The establishment of such a clear proposition will attract serious investment from the private sector in response. This is when government resources can be freed up to consolidate on these gains by strengthening infrastructure and the rule of law. Nigeria’s GDP could more than quadruple and sustainable economic growth could be a natural outcome. If you start ab initio, on the premise that you could sacrifice good values such as integrity, transparency and accountability, so long as you record some “economic growth” that makes “money flow freely again”, this high risk (foolish) strategy would turnout at best to be a bubble, and false growth which will inevitably end in a major crash. Nigerians need to see through the wiles of crafty, foxy politicians who are after nothing but their own self-perpetuation and preservation in wealth and power. It is true the new breed may not fully seize power till 2023 but can such a fresh, new future come from old guard, re-cycled, politicians? What should the reasonable Nigerian do? If your choice candidate and party is unlikely to be able to improve the situation by 2023 then why not make a choice that will do no harm until then? Vote in the leaders and party that will hold fort even if repair is beyond them and banish those who will return us to ‘the way things were.’ Nigerians deserve a better future and now is the time to prepare for it. What do you think?
How new airport terminals will impact Nigerians
Simon Nkeonyasuwa
With ASKY starting operations from the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja and Lufthansa set to commence from Port Harcourt International Airport, Omagwa in no distant time, two of the four terminals funded through $500 million by the Chinese EximBank loan with counterpart funding of $100 million from the Federal Republic of Nigeria are being put to use. When the Kotoka International Airport Terminal 3 in Accra, Ghana was commissioned in September, a lot of Nigerians went on the social media to lambast their fatherland with little or no information on what their own country was doing and this was ill-informed. In truth however, the newly built Kotoka International Airport Terminal 3 in Accra, Ghana with a handling capacity of 5 million passengers annually is still lower in capacity to the Port Harcourt terminal which will handle 7 million annually. And at the cost of $ 600 million joint funding for the four terminals, it is comparatively more cost-effective than the single terminal in Accra at a cost of $275 million. Already, with the facility on ground at both PHIA and NAIA, stakeholders and government are expecting more airlines to indicate interest in flying to those airports especially the Port Harcourt Airport that has had a lull of activities since the decline in the oil and gas sectors. However, despite the slowdown of activities in Port Harcourt, all the terminals still require more people to run them, according to the Managing Director, Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, Saleh Dunoma, who in an interview recently, stated that with two of the four terminals commissioned and ready for use, it will create employment for deserving Nigerians.
“The Chinese terminals was funded by the Federal government and the ChinaExim Bank loan. So now we have commissioned two as I speak to you. I need more staff to run those terminals. “We are looking for more people, so it has created an opportunity for us to employ. So the unions are very happy because right now I am short of staff to run those terminals. We are not closing down the whole terminals, we are running them. So we are looking for more people to employ because of the additional capacity we have created in terms of infrastructure,” he said. President MuhammadU Buhari while commissioning the terminals Port Harcourt on October 26th and Abuja on December the 20th, said government was mindful of the infrastructure deficit in the aviation sub sector and was trying to fix them gradually. He was also particular about the fact that not much was done after these airports were built-in the 70s and 80s to increase handling capacity of the airports and so decisive steps were sought and taken to ensure that the terminals meet the minimum international global standards. “This Administration recognises aviation as a catalyst for economic growth and as such will continue to encourage and support the actualizstion of projects that will place Nigerian Airports amongst the best in the world,” he said. These massive investments reflect Government’s deliberate policy to sustain the development of Nigeria’s infrastructure gradually closing the infrastructural deficit bedevilling our country, which is a good thing in itself. Information which is now public knowledge states that Port Harcourt International Airport is approximately
28,000 metre square and can facilitate 7 million passengers annually with 24 check-in counters, 3 baggage collection carousels, 12 immigration desks at arrival and 16 immigration desks at departure, four passenger boarding bridges plus remote boarding and arrival to mention a few of the facilities. While the new international terminal at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport is designed to handle 15 million passengers annually and is almost twice the size of the earlier commissioned PHIA with approximately 56,000 square metres with s 60m long sky walk that connects the airport terminal to the metro station. The area covered by the roof is the size of five football pitches, 66 Check-in counters, 5 baggage collection carousels, 28 immigration desks at Arrival and 16 immigration desks at Departure. The new terminal also has 8 security screening points, 8 passenger boarding bridges plus remote boarding and arrival. It has 2 food courts, 4 premium lounges, a 22 room hotel with spa, over 3000 square metres of Duty Free space and more than 5000 square metres of utility space. If put to adequate use and properly maintained, these four terminals are facilities that are built to last. Also the FAAN boss in that same interview allayed some fears being touted in public spaces on operations of the terminal is being handled by the Chinese. According to him, nothing could be further from the truth, as the Chinese that built the airport terminals would not operate them until they recoup the money they spent on them, as many have been led to believe. “There is nothing like the Chinese will run it. They gave us a loan to construct
the terminals and we are supposed to pay back this loan. So arrangements are made in the agreement we signed that as soon as the buildings are put into operation they will give us a gestation period and then from there we will start paying back the loan. “So we are making arrangements to start payments as soon as the gestation period is over. They are not going to run the terminals, what we want to do with them is as usual, if you provide an infrastructure, there is a defect liability period which is about one year. So, they will help us train our engineers and maintain the facility for one year until the defect liability period is over. So they have to be around until our people get used to these facilities as quickly as possible.” “We have started the training even before the commissioning of the building, but this is purely technical area. Their engineers and technicians will remain with our technicians and engineers over this period of defect liability period so that after that, they will have their hands off. So the Chinese is not going to run the terminals, we have started in Abuja and you can see that our people are running it,” the FAAN boss said in the interview. In all, the benefits of these edifices when put to use will become significant indices and catalysts for economic growth and well as sustained development for civil aviation. It may also help achieve the goal of making Nigeria a regional hub, when orchestrated steps are taken to achieve that as well as ensure Nigeria is moves towards achieving and meeting global aviation standards in facilitation, passenger processing and service delivery in tandem with international best practices.

Editorial Commentary Ogun politics: My encounter with violence
Times Guest Columnist Reuben Abati
I once had a taste of political violence during the 2015 Presidential campaigns. In Bauchi, our convoy was stoned. In Katsina, restless youths wielding stones and long sticks threatened to attack us. It didn’t matter that it was a Presidential convoy. But nothing in those two places is comparable to what I experienced in Sagamu, Ogun State on Sunday, January 13. The PDP Gubernatorial candidate in Ogun State, Senator Buruji Kashamu and I accompanied by our spouses, had gone to attend the 2019 edition of the Annual Thanksgiving church service organized by former Governor of Ogun State, Otunba Gbenga Daniel. We arrived at the church – Abraham’s Tabernacle – when the service was well under way. For a while, the service was disrupted as the people kept shouting: Buru-ji Kash-amu! Kashamu! Kashamu! The Senator acknowledged the cheers, greeted the dignitaries in attendance and took his seat. The event was more of a political get-together, and that is understandable. Otunba Gbenga Daniel, our host is a leader of the PDP in the South West and a Director of the Atiku-Obi Presidential campaign. Outside the church, from the entrance to the main street, even beyond the church: there were posters on display promoting Atiku, Buruji Kashamu, Gboyega Nasir Isiaka, and Hon. Ladi Adebutu (the House of Representatives member contesting Senator Kashamu’s candidacy along with the candidacy of all persons whose names the Adebayo Dayo-led executive committee submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Every elective office-seeker at the event obviously tried to outshine the other with billboards, campaign vehicles, posters and the number of supporters in attendance. Others displayed theirs, we too displayed our own. I had no reason to suspect that the day would further expose me to yet another dirty underbelly of Nigerian politics: in this instance, violence and the attendant threat to lives and property. I had hardly taken a seat, close to the entrance in the North Eastern part of the church, when I suddenly noticed some commotion. The whole incident didn’t take up to two minutes. “What happened?”, I asked the guy standing close to me. “Lado has left the church in annoyance.” Lado is the nickname of Hon. Ladi Adebutu. “How? Why?” The gentleman who was giving me the information, started pointing over my head and said: “It is that man” “Which man?” “He is sitting somewhere behind you” “What happened?” The man didn’t finish his story properly, when he bent down a little and told me to leave where I was seated, and go and find somewhere else within the church. “Why?”, I asked. I really didn’t see why I should start going up and down inside the House of God, when I am not a church worker. “Egbon, you don’t know me? . I lived in your father’s house in Abeokuta. Trust me. Leave this place where you are sitting. Lado’s boys have entered the church premises. They are threatening to come inside to attack Kashamu’s people.” You needed to see the speed with which I jumped up and went far inside the church. Meanwhile, there were sounds of heavy gunshots outside, and commotion. I wanted to go outside the church to see what was going on. Another man pulled me back and told me not to step outside because Lado’s people were looking for Kashamu and his people. He said he was going to inform Otunba Gbenga Daniel to quickly intervene and see what could be done to take control of the situation. I felt as if I had become a trapped rabbit. I called my Personal Assistant who was waiting outside the church with the drivers who brought my campaign vehicles and some of our supporters from Abeokuta. I could hear sounds of the mayhem in the background. “Ki lo nse le, nita. What is going on outside? What is all that commotion all about?” “Sir, awon boys Lado ni o. They are looking for Kashamu. They are threatening to kill him and D.G.” “Hello. Hello” “Sir, they are vandalizing all our campaign vehicles”
“Tell the drivers to go and quickly move the vehicles to somewhere safe,” I instructed. I could hear the P.A. telling the drivers: “Oga says you people should go and move the vehicles quickly away from here.” One of them shouted back at him: “Oga says we should go and move vehicles. I can’t move any vehicle. Do you want those boys to kill me? Can’t you see the kind of guns they are carrying?” I could hear the gunshots. I couldn’t blame the rebellious driver. A few minutes later, the PA called back frantically. “Sir, sir, sir” “Yes?,” I responded “They have vandalized our own vehicles. They have smashed the windscreens of our campaign vehicles.” “How many vehicles did you bring?” “Three sir.” “Did I not tell you to bring only two? See what you have caused?” “One of the drivers managed to escape with his own vehicle sir. They beat him up but he managed to jump into the car and ran away with it.” “What of the Touareg, Egunje brought from Lagos?” “That one is not branded sir.” “Tell Egunje to move that car away right now. He must not be sluggish. Where are the boys threatening to attack us now?’” “The police have started confronting them sir. The police have arrived. They are driving them back now but they are threatening that they will regroup and come back.” The only thing that was ringing in my head was the disclosure that they were looking for Kashamu and DG. I am oftentimes referred to by our party members as DG or Deputy. The only other person who goes by the name of DG is the Director-General of the Kashamu/Abati Campaign Organization, Chief Remi Bakare. I have not had any confrontation with anybody since our campaign began. I saw no reason why anyone should threaten to harm me. I thought of going out of the church to go and sit in one of the vehicles parked inside the church premises. I couldn’t summon the courage to do so – my face is emblazoned on all our branded campaign vehicles, billboards and posters all over the state. What if the enemy outside recognized me? I started calling Hon. Segun Seriki, who is an experienced politician to advise me on what precaution could be taken under the circumstances. His phone kept ringing. He didn’t pick. I could see that the women in our entourage were worried. I was more than worried, my heart was pumping heavily. This was the state I was in when someone came to me and said, we would leave the church immediately after the service, but we should all go out together at the same time, and stay very close and be vigilant. The man added: “if those Lado boys are able to grab just one person, we can’t predict what will happen.” I told myself that it would indeed be a good idea for anyone in that situation to be vigilant. I was no longer listening to whatever anyone was saying, not even the church choir. The only thought in my head was how to get back home in one piece. The service soon ended. We filed out of the church, bonding together. One of our men wrapped his body around me as as if he was a human towel. He told me not to allow anybody to bump into me. You never know who is holding a knife. I had actually seen one or two persons wielding knives inside the church and they were not wearing any identifiable uniform. We were practically smuggled out of the church by security agents, shooting persistently in the air and chasing the hoodlums. We were lucky we made it to Otunba Gbenga Daniel’s residence. As the bullets rushed out of guns, my wife’s friend who was sitting in the same vehicle with me, tried to duck under the dashboard. She said someone had once advised her that this is the best way to avoid stray bullets. I couldn’t afford to laugh. I just grinned. The moment I sighted Hon. Seriki, I turned on him. “Egbon, I was calling your phone. You didn’t pick”. “Sorry. My phones were in silent mode” “But where did you go?” “Ha, my brother, in this game, self-preservation is the first law of survival. Sagamu is the headquarters of cultists in this part of the state. Those boys are deadly. It is a volatile zone.”
OUR POSITION Stemming the upsurge of malnutrition among children Without mincing words, education and awareness are the first steps to understand and solve any problem. But the problem of malnutrition is not an exception. The ranking of Nigeria among countries with the highest number of children suffering from malnutrition definitely calls for concern. Nutrition has a powerful influence on growth, development, and the productive life of every individual. Optimal nutrition at each stage of the life cycle is therefore a fundamental human right. Furthermore, nutrition is linked to most of, if not all, the Strategic Development Goals (SDGs) and the right to food, adequate nutrition, and healthcare are fundamental to achieving the SDGs. Malnutrition is the lack of proper nutrition, caused by not having enough to eat, not eating enough of the right things, or being unable to use the food that one eats. Over-nutrition is also malnutrition. In children, malnutrition thrives when children go hungry or feed on monotonous diets based on highly processed carbohydrates, little fresh vegetables and no fruit. According to a report by the Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey (MICS) on malnutrition burden in Nigeria, stunting, wasting and underweight rates have worsened in the country when compared to the same survey in 2015. The MICS in 2017 puts Nigeria’s stunting rate at 43.3 per cent, as against 32.9 per cent in the 2015 survey. It shows that in 2017, the rate of wasting was 10.8 per cent, while in 2015; the figure was 7.2 per cent. The study also shows that underweight rate in the country was at 31.5 per cent in 2017, while in 2015, the rate was 19.4 per cent. Global records recently showed that while stunting and other forms of malnutrition have reduced worldwide, from 198 million to 151 million people, the burden is presently increasing at an alarming rate in West and Central Africa, from 22.8 million to 28.8 million people. Incidentally, ignorance of what is adequate diet, poverty and lip-service to strategic plan of action on nutrition by the Nigerian government has affected the intake of nutritious food in Nigeria. A review of trends in economic growth, health and nutrition in Nigeria indicates that the country is undergoing rapid socioeconomic, demographic, nutritional and health transitions. But under-nutrition has continued to be persistently high and remains a challenge. Lately, the media is full of statistics about how Nigeria is home to the highest number of stunted children in the continent, percentage of wasted and under-weight children. Unfortunately, the statistics do not result in the adoption of essential family practices. It does not stop badly cooked food being served in private homes, restaurants, hotels and boarding houses. Dishing out statistics is not solving the problem of inadequate-nutrition. Too often we choose our food for reasons of convenience, taste, availability and social acceptance. We prefer to love sugar and fat as kids. Many eat rice consistently for as much as thrice a day. Nutrition is the intake of food, considered in relation to the body’s dietary needs. They are likely to have poor nutritional statusparticularly insufficient micronutrients (vitamins and minerals) which are essential for building good immunity, enabling efficient metabolism and full body functioning. It is, therefore, desirable to address and remove the conditions that make malnutrition thrive. We are of he opinion that advocacy need to become loudest on the importance of taking adequate care of pregnant women with adequate nutrition and for the women to practice exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months after birth. Exclusive breastfeeding is said to reduce 50 per cent of killer diseases in children. The practice of exclusive breastfeeding in the first six months of life and the introduction of adequate complementary diet till the first two years of life are key to child survival and optimal growth. It is also crucial that individuals adopt a nutrition-
based approach to food choices and eating habits to avoid the long-term effects of lifestyle malnutrition. In essence, this means changing from a diet high in animal products, refined and processed foods to one that is rich in fresh, wholesome foods, especially fruit and vegetables. Another thing that needs advocacy is the promotion of natural foods, because they contain “life forces,” which is defined in terms of minerals and vitamins. Call them what you like, the fact remains that only the fresh foods, whether they are fruits, vegetables, milk, flesh or grains have their maximum quota of these life-giving elements. From the afore-mentioned, our objective against malnutrition will be better achieved if we focus on addressing issues of status of women, the care of pregnant mothers and children under two, breastfeeding and importance of adequate nutrition and health. This is where telecommunication companies as well as the mass media should come up with public education on how to achieve optimum nutrition. Sadly too, lifestyles have changed for the worse and not many Nigerian homes have gardens and poultries from which adequate protein could be sourced for consumption particularly, in the urban areas, which is why the urban poor languish more in malnourishment. Mass poverty, no doubt, remains a major hindrance to life lived in abundance by Nigerians. We therefore submit that while it is the duty of government to see to the welfare of the citizenry, families should give adequate attention to their children and their feeding habits. There should be home gardens where vegetables are planted even in the urban areas. Education of course, is key. The Ministries of Health, particularly, at the state level, should use local languages on all media platforms to sensitise people on how to give children balanced diet, using nutrient-rich local foods. We believe that this development will reduce malnutrition among children to barest minimum.

appear and show cause, why a final order should not be made. On October 29, 2018, EFCC’s counsel, Mr Rotimi Oyedepo had moved his motion seeking the final forfeiture of the said sums, but counsel to the respondents had respectively, opposed the said applications for final forfeiture, while arguing their counter affidavits. Specifically, Ozekhome, who appeared for the third to sixth respondents, had informed the court that exhibits F5 of his processes, confirms that the third respondent (Finchley Homes) is a company, and shows video evidences of various outfits legitimately run by it. He had then urged that the said videos be exhibited in court, and the judge granted same. At the proceedings yesterday, five videos were displayed. The first video which spanned a period of 25 minutes, showed business outlets and products of Finchley Homes Ltd, (third respondent) including interior and exterior home decorations, household utensils, textiles, drinks, noodles, furniture, its warehouse, as well as various pick up vans of the company.
The second video which lasted for four minutes, showed the business outfit of the sixth respondent (Magel Resort Ltd), located in Otueke, Bayelsa State, exhibiting the luxurious Hotel and Suites with well equipped IT centres. In the same vein, counsel to the first respondent, Chief Ifedayo Adedipe (SAN), also exhibited three more videos, showing activities of the Women for Change Initiative, a Non Governmental Organisation linked to Jonathan. The third video displayed the flagging off of the initiative’s campaign and it lasted for 10 minutes; the fourth video also dsplayed for 10 minutes, showed aspects of the initiative’s empowerment of women through the distribution of bags of rice and other food items. The fifth video which lasted for seven minutes, displayed a visit of the then First Lady, Patience, to Katsina State, also for flagging off of the initiative. After the videos were exhibited before the court, EFCC’s counsel, Oyedepo, then informed the court that he had not been served with an affidavit of the first respondent showing some of the exhibits displayed in court. The court however adjourned the case until January 16 for continuation of trial.

APC calls for police investigation of alleged burning of PDP campaign vehicles in Enugu, condemns act Moses Oyediran, Enugu The Enugu State Chapter of the All Progressive Congress (APC) has condemned the alleged burning of PDP campaign vehicles in Enugu. The APC said “this recent wave of suspected sponsored political attacks on political exposed persons and facilities of parties is unacceptable and highly detrimental to the development of our democratic processes in the state.” It therefore, called on the police and other security agencies to rise up to the occasion and fish out the perpetrators, so as to serve as deterrence to others. The state chairman of the party, Dr. Ben Nwoye, in a statement issued in Enugu, expressed worry over the development which he described as “worrisome ahead of
the forthcoming general elections in the state. He said: “APC Enugu state chapter condemns in its entirety this unwarranted “high wave of suspected organized arson, attempted assassination and other political crimes in the state in recent times. “We are therefore calling on the security agencies to rise up and fish out those behind it, no matter how highly placed. “This uncivilised act indeed underscores the present anthem of Enugu state is in the hands of God. “We have reported to the police the attempt on my life, attacks on our campaign facilities and burning of vehicles belonging to some of our party candidates and a Ward Chairman at New Haven, Nsukka and Abakpa, respectively. “We also reported the destruction of our billboards by a serving Commissioner in the state and no arrest has been made.
“Without fear of contradiction, Enugu state is now a comfort zone and safe haven for political miscreants. “What is happening today in Enugu State political arena is a sad reminder of the dark days of PDP leadership in Enugu from 1999 to 2007 when Enugu state became a safe heaven for hired assassins and political thugs. “Yet the PDP says Enugu State is the most peaceful State in the country and constantly proclaimed that “Enugu State is in the hands of God.” Unfortunately, the scripture teaches us that faith without work is dead. The truth must be said, some officials of the present PDP led government in the state are promoters of violence, and pretending to be Apostle of peace. They have been involved in recruitments of thugs and cultists in preparation for the forthcoming election.

N2bn ONSA fraud: Again, ex-Accountant Short News General, Otunla’s absence stalls trial Militant group warns ex-agitators Andrew Orolua, Abuja
Justice Nnamdi Dimgba of the Federal High Court, Abuja, has again adjourned the trial of former Accountant-General of the Federation, Jonah Otunla. The judge was forced to adjourn the case to February 7, 2019 on Tuesday following the absence of the defendant in court. The Court however stressed that if he is again absent at the next adjourned date, the Court will be compelled to hear the application of the prosecution seeking for a warrant for his arrest. Otunla is being prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), on a five-count charge of money laundering involving the diversion of about N2 billion from the account of the Office of the National Security Adviser, ONSA. He was to be arraigned on December 7, 2017 along with Ade Adelakun, and seven other companies – Gold Reef Industries Limited, Lambster Nigeria Limited, G.C. Electronic Limited, Sinmilak Nigeria Limited, Wehsac Farms Limited, Shepherded Field Global Resources Limited and Stellavera Development Company Limited, but his absence stalled his arraignment. The case was rescheduled to January 22, 2018, but yet again he was absent in court, and though his counsel, Ahmed Raji, SAN, represented
him, his absence stalled his trial, as Adelakun who was present in court, could not take his plea. Raji had told the Court that his client was away “for medical treatment abroad”. One of the counts reads: “That you, Jonah Ogunniyi Otunla being the former Accountant General of the Federation and a Director and signatory to the ECOBANK account of WEHSAC FARM LTD, Otunba Ade Adelakun, being the Managing Director/Chief Executive officer and a signatory to the accounts of Goldreef Industries Nigeria Limited, Fidelity Bank, Lambster Nigeria Limited- Zenith Bank, G.C Electronics Ltd - GTB and Sinmilak Nigeria Limited- Fidelity Account, Col. Bello Fadile (now at large) being the former Director, Special Duties in the office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) and also a Director and signatory to the accounts of Helpline Organisation, sometime between June and August 2013, in Abuja within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court directly converted the sum of N2,000,000,000 (Two Billion Naira) only transferred to the accounts of Goldreef Industries Limited-Fidelity Bank (N550 million), Lambster Nigeria Limited- Zenith Bank (N650 million), G.C Electronics Limited - GTB (N450 million) and Sinmilak Nigeria Limited- Fidelity Account (N350 million) from the account of the Office of the National Security Adviser with the Central Bank of Nigeria purporting to be for the supply
of security equipments when you reasonably ought to have known that the said fund formed part of the proceeds of an unlawful activity of Col. Mohammed Sambo Dasuki (retd), the then National Security Adviser (to wit: criminal breach of trust and corruption) and you thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 15 (2) (b) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act, 2011 as amended in 2012 and punishable under Section 15 (3) and (4) of the same Act”. His absence also stalled his expected arraignment on April 30, 2018 prompting the prosecution led by Francis Jirbo, to file an ex parte motion seeking for the issuance of a warrant of arrest against Otunla. Jirbo had argued that: “The first defendant (Otunla), having jumped administrative bail has failed severally to appear before the court. I hereby apply for a warrant of arrest to produce the defendant and to be properly charged by this Honourable Court”. Jirbo had also told the Court that the oath of warrant of arrest, filed on March 1, 2018 was brought pursuant to Section 37 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015. It disclosed that “Otunla and Adelakun were investigated by the EFCC and had responded by making statements in writing, while their accomplice, Fadile, bolted out of the country and is currently said to be living in the United Kingdom as a fugitive”.

Gov Emmanuel urges Nigerians to join families of fallen soldiers for unity, peaceful election Isaac Job, Uyo Governor Udom Emmanuel of Akwa Ibom has charged Nigerians to remain united irrespective of tribe and religion and allow the will of God to prevail in next month general elections. Emmanuel said this during the 2019 Armed Forces Remembrance Day held in Uyo Cenataph on Tuesday. He urged Nigerians to rededicate themselves to ideals of the fallen heroes and ensure national unity and peaceful coexistence. “On this day of remembrance of our gallant soldier, let us rededicate ourselves to the ideals of national unity, of peaceful co-existence. “When our gallant soldiers went to the theatre of war during the First and Second World Wars in far flung places like Burma, Myanmar, when they were in Katanga province

machinations,” Emmanuel said. The governor urged Nigerians to join hands with government to cater for the welfare of relatives of the gallant soldiers who lost their lives to keep Nigeria together. According to him, the survivors and families of our gallant soldiers should not be allowed to cry for the lost of their breadwinners. He said, “We must spare our time, our resources and our blessings to remember these heroes always, not just in January of every year, but in our daily activities. “We must reach out to these families and show them that the sacrifices their breadwinners made were not in vain.” Highlight of the Remembrance Day celebration was laying of wreaths in memory of the fallen heroes and released of pigeons.

Election: INEC tasks religious leaders on members’ negative attitude Moses Oyediran, Enugu
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has urged religious leaders to mandate their members to collect the Permanent Voters Card (PVC) and shun the current negative attitude of vote buying. INEC’s National Commissioner in-charge of Enugu and Anambra States, Mr. Festus Okoye, made the appeal in an interactive session with the religious leaders in Enugu State on Tuesday in Enugu. Okoye urged the religious leaders to impress it on their members to ensure peaceful conduct during the elections, as vast majority of them listen to the religious fathers. He also urged them to discourage the spread of any fake news or information, which is intended to discredit the collective effort towards credible general election. ``Nigeria needs prayers now in these dicey and unpredictable times. ``Kindly use your respected and holy positions as men of God and seek the face of the Almighty God for a peaceful, free, fair and credible 2019 General Elections,’’ the commissioner said. Speaking, INEC Resident Electoral

The state Director of National Orientation Agency (NOA), Mr. Isaac Onukwuba, urged the religious leaders to assist INEC, the government and residents to ensure peace, ``since election is for the living’’. ``Religious leaders must be in the fore-front of encouraging people of the state to come out en mass to participate in collecting PVCs and actual voting,’’ Onukwuba said. The religious leaders, however, urged INEC to make adequate provision for security as well as ensure that the election commence very early as promised by the commission. They also want INEC and security agencies to ensure that those violating the electoral
processes are prosecuted to serve as a deterrent to others, who might think of manipulating the system. Very Rev. Fr. Benjamin Eze, the Vice Chairman of Enugu State Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), thanked INEC for the engagement and giving religious leaders time to get answers to some pertinent questions bothering them. ``We as religious leaders are happy for how INEC had continued to carry us along to ensure a peaceful, fair and credible elections,’’ Eze said. How Customs raked N3.1trn in 3 years - Official Idu Jude The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has said it has generated the total sum of N3.1 trillion in revenue for the country from 2016 to 2018. Explaining how the revenue was generated within the period under review, the Public Relations Officer of NCS, Joseph Attah, in Abuja on Tuesday said the service realised N898.8 billion revenue in 2016, N1.037 trillion in 2017, and N1.2 trillion in 2018. He, however, pointed out that about 16,049 seizures of various commodities were made by NCS commands across the country, adding that 5,925 items were seized in 2016, 4,889 impounded in 2017 and 5,235 in 2018. According to him, the implementation of the presidential mandate to restructure, reform, and raise revenue by the present management of NSC has greatly repositioned the service for better. “What is challenging but being gradually achieved is the reform of persons, especially the need for attitudinal change on the part of operatives and stakeholders. “Today in the service, there is an
increasing disposition to place national interest above self,” he said. Mr. Attah noted that the establishment of the Customs Police Unit with the responsibility to check acts of indiscipline and other vices was fast turning customs into a national example for service delivery. He said the suppression of smuggling remained the most challenging aspect of Customs’ functions as anti-smuggling operations were seen differently by many people who still regarded smuggling as a business not crime. “The challenges being faced by the Service in addressing smuggling are porous borders, the non-cooperative attitude of some border dwellers and lack of proper implementation of the ECOWAS protocol on transit by people from neighbouring countries. “Others are the use of motorcycles and animals to smuggle items through difficult terrains,” he said. According to him, the activities of smugglers to some extent have been put on check in the last three years since the assumption of office by Hameed Ali ”especially with the unprecedented seizures made so far.” CAC registers 39,074 Business Names in one month

GenCos threaten to shut power plants nationwide Mathew Dadiya, Abuja Electricity generation companies have threatened to shut down power plants across the county if the federal government fails to intervene in the challenges troubling them. Executive Secretary of the Association of Power Generation Companies (APGC), Joy Ogaji, in a statement said the decline in available generation is due to various challenges experienced by its members in the electricity market. Ogaji said the challenges include gas
constraints, on-going maintenance of power plants and low demand by electricity distribution companies (DisCos). “Available generation capability experienced a drop due to various factors such as Gas constraints, on-going maintenance by some gas suppliers and Low load demand by Distribution Companies (DisCos) which resulted in reduced generation or outage of some power plants,” the statement read. “For instance; Afam power Plc (Afam VI Gas/Steam),GT12, 13 and ST10 power plants were shut down for a period of about 16 days due to a planned maintenance that
was carried out by the gas suppliers on their facilities. Although Afam power Plc was duly notified about the maintenance, it resulted in a reduction of Afams available generation capability from about 490MW to 0MW. “Also within this period, most of the NIPP’s suffered from various gas constraints, for example Alaoji NIPP, Sapele NIPP, Olorunsogo NIPP, Omotosho NIPP, etc. Some of the companies’ generation capability dropped to 0 due to the outage of their power plants which was as a result of gas constraints. Case in point was Aloaji NIPP whose supply was cut off by their gas
suppliers due to their inability to pay for their gas. “Jebba Power plant generation capability reduced by about 110MW to 360MW due to low load demand. This reduction demand was also suffered by Egbin Power plant and FIPL-Omoku. “The decline was not an act of rebellion by the GENCOS neither was it deliberate but was beyond their control. It can be traced to the various challenges experienced by the GENCOS in the electricity market such as liquidity issues, power rejection by the DisCos and Gas constraints due to the sorry state of the market.’’

Experts wants FIRS, Customs to widen revenue to tackle high debt profile Motolani Oseni Owing to the nation’s high debt profile, some financial experts in the country have tasked the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) and Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) to intensify action in revenue collection. They also, urged the Federal Government of Nigeria to widen the nation’s tax base and sell identifiable productive assets to tackle the rising debt profile.
As at the third quarter of 2018, the Nigeria’s debt profile stood at N22.43 trillion, and financial stakeholders, such as the Head of Banking and Finance Department, Nasarawa State University Keffi, Prof. Uche Uwaleke, believed that the government needed to widen its tax base to reduce debt profile and increase tax to Gross Domestic Product (GDP) ratio. Uwaleke said that there was the need for the Federal Inland Revenue Service and Nigeria Customs Service to intensify action in revenue collection.
This he said was imperative as the six per cent tax to GDP was very low, considering the size of the economy. According to him, the Customs Service should map out strategies aimed at addressing smuggling to boost revenue generation. Uwaleke added that government should identify productive assets for outright sale or privatisation to rake in revenue aimed at reducing the country’s huge debt profile. The expert said it was important for the government to expand the non-
oil exports, particularly agricultural products and solid minerals to boost foreign reserve and exchange rate. He also called on the efficiency unit of the Ministry of Finance to address wastage in various ministries to free up funds for other uses. Mr. Sola Oni, a chartered stockbroker said that the mounting debt profile showed that Nigeria spends more than it earns as a country. “There is no crime if a country owes but on what basis is the debt? Is it for consumption or investment?

Collins pointed out that when completed and fully operational, the facility would help Nigeria save hard-earned foreign exchange spent on importing raw materials, which the country has competitive and comparative advantage of producing. The Chief Executive Officer, D four Metals Mr. Olusegun Oyalana, noted that the total investment over the 12 months will be around $3m, stressing that the plant is
expected to break even within 18months after construction. “The project is in line with the federal government’s policy of adding value to minerals before export thereby reducing capital flight. The output of the plant will be sold to international companies registered on the London metal exchange. He also stated that the raw materials would be sourced from various local mines in Plateau, Gombe and Bauchi States.’’
FirstBank, Microsoft 4Afrika partner to boost SMEs in Temitope Adebayo First Bank of Nigeria Limited, together with Microsoft 4Afrika, will host a free-to-attend event for SMEs in Nigeria, designed to promote technology adoption and skills development. The event will serve as an official launch of the new partnership between Microsoft 4Afrika and FirstBank, following a memorandum of understanding signed earlier in June 2018. The partnership seeks to build the capacity of local SMEs and accelerate their digital transformation, by providing them with exclusive and
tailored non-financial solutions. Participants will be exposed to skills development resources, access to business networks and an educational platform. The Head Customer Experience and Value Management of the bank, Taiwo Shonekan, First Bank of Nigeria Limited: “This partnership with Microsoft enables us to deliver a portfolio of non-financial solutions to our SME customers. We have over the last 125 years supported SMEs in building their business, whilst contributing to the national economy. This partnership is a landmark step in our quest to leverage the influence of technology in businesses, especially in today’s digital age.”
“With this partnership, FirstBank customers can buy Microsoft products at discounted rates in the local currency – the naira – as this seamlessly aids technology adoption, skills and capacity development among SMEs in Nigeria,” she adds. Amrote Abdella, Regional Director of the Microsoft 4Afrika Initiative and the keynote speaker for the event says: “For SMEs, integrating technology into their operations is no longer an option, but a necessity for future growth and success. We’re looking forward to engaging in discussions that explore how technology can extend reach to new markets and improve productivity, which
results in better customer service, more competitive offerings and the ability to act with agility.” Across the continent, Microsoft 4Afrika is forging partnerships with several players in the SME ecosystem – from banks to telcos – to enhance SME offerings and reach a broader audience. “Technology and the relevant digital skills today play such an integral role in business success. We’re working with organisations to extend this support to as many SMEs as possible, ensuring not only their success, but the growth and competiveness of our continent in an increasingly digital world.”

2019 will be a better year for PR in Nigeria – Olakunle Godwin Anyebe The Managing Director, Above Media Limited, Mr. Olakunle Yusuf, has predicted a better operating year for Public Relations industry in the country. Yusuf who made this known recently in Lagos, stated that there are various indications that the economy is bouncing back to normalcy, having scaled through the dark days of recession in 2016 and 2017 respectively. According to him, there was tremendous growth in the overall economy since the first to the third quarters of 2018, but he added that there was a shortfall in the fourth quarter of 2018. In his words: “In 2018, the first quarter was good; second good, third quarter good but fourth quarter, clients were not willing to spend money but we believe that 2019 will be better for PR industry because the economy would have been stable. Yusuf also disclosed that the Ibadan based PR agency, was strategically positioning itself for growth by aggressive exploring new growth opportunities. He revealed that Above Media has concluded plan to establish its own TV station in Ibadan in the next five years. He noted that this will give the agency more control over its programmes currently running on several radio and TV channels in the country. “Our projection is that in the next five years, we should be able to establish a TV station in Ibadan. We operate more in Ibadan because Lagos market is already flooded.” According to him, despite the challenges of 2018, Above Media enjoyed a relatively successful business year as it won several new businesses. He added that the investment in the TV station was designed to consolidate on the gains of the last few years. “This year alone, we got some jobs but part of what we do is that we relate with advertising agencies, we relate with PR firms to sponsor our programmes. We have programmes on radio, we have programmes on TV. Also as part of effort to reposition the agency for sustainability and future successes, Above Media recently relocated its Lagos office from Egbeda to Ikeja. The agency’s presence in Lagos according to Yusuf was informed by the need to ensure close proximity with some existing clients and also expand its share of the Lagos PR and media market. He added that the move also include training and retraining of its staff to be abreast of current trends in a bid to satisfy and offer valuables services to its numerous clients in the industry. Yusuf said: “When we started off our agency in Lagos, we started at Ikeja and later we moved to Egbeda but now we have relocated back to Ikeja with a bigger office space. It is an improvement on what we had previous and by next year we are planning to move higher.”

2019 presidency: APC chieftain says Buhari not deserving of Bauchi votes Stories by Patrick Okohue A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), in Bauchi State, Nasiru Darazo has alleged that the ruling party has become a refuge for politicians having fraud cases with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). Darazo insisted that because of that President Muhammadu Buhari does not deserve the votes of his people in Bauchi ahead of the general elections. Speaking with reporters in Bauchi on Tuesday, the APC chieftain stated that politicians like Adamu Muazu, Isa Yuguda, Senator Babayo Garba Gamawa among others, who recently defected to the APC took the decision to escape the wrath of EFCC. “It’s unfortunate, APC is using EFCC to force politicians with alleged financial crimes to join the party and the defection of PDP bigwigs to APC in Bauchi recently is an indication,” he added. Darazo warned that Nigerians may risk being deceived
eventually if Buhari is voted into power in 2019 election despite the current challenges faced by Nigerians. Darazo insisted that the defections of Muazu, Yuguda, Senator Gamawa were not enough to guarantee victory for the APC except INEC toes the line of the ruling party in their desperation for power “In fact, none of the defectors come into APC with their followers because they have lost political relevance from their respective domains even in their positions as former governors, deputy and senator,” he claimed. The APC chieftain maintained that Buhari does not deserve a single vote in Bauchi during the 2019 election for aiding Governor Mohammed Abubakar to secure APC gubernatorial ticket. He stated that Buhari lacks the charisma and credibility to govern Nigeria again for allegedly allowing a cabal to hijack his administration to the detriment of the less privileged. Darazo warned that any attempt to vote Buhari and Governor Abubakar again would be a disservice to national development.
2019: Obasa warns against violence, as Agege APC flags off campaign The Centre for AntiCorruption and Open Leadership (CACOL), has condemned the alleged demand for a sum of N50mn (Fifty Million Naira) by two Human Rights Activists, Dandy Eze (President of the Path of Peace Initiatives) and one Solomon Johnson, to help facilitate the withdrawal of a petition written against Wahum Nigeria Limited and currently being investigated by the EFCC (Economic and Financial Crimes Commission) according to a newspapers report on Monday. In a Release issued by CACOL’s Coordinator of Media and Publications, Adegboyega Otunuga, on behalf of the organisation’s Executive Chairman, Mr. Debo Adeniran, he remarked, “It is a trite saying that, ‘He who
comes to equity must come with clean hands’, and what this means is that, as a whistleblower, you cannot afford to blow hot and cold at the same time. “The two accomplices in this matter were said to have written a petition to the Nigeria’s anti-graft agency, EFCC, sometime last year (2018) and in the process of the anti-graft agency’s investigation of the crux of the petition, it was discovered that these same Activists had, in the course of petitioning, approached the management of same company under investigation, to solicit for ‘settlement’ to make them have a change of heart and request for a withdrawal. “As an anti-graft organisation, CACOL decries any untoward
attitude that could undermine the fight against corruption, a social malaise we all agreed has done serious damage to the psyche of the nation and that is probably singularly responsible for most of our woes as a nation. It is in the light of this that we deem it fit to condemn such contradictory acts, especially from those we believe should know better as you cannot use corruption to fight corruption. “It is also instructive to warn that efforts should be made by relevant authorities towards ensuring that possibilities of any set-up or blackmail are avoided so as not to bring into disrepute or disdain, the collective fight against corruption by both the government agencies and the Civil Society,” the group said.
Nyako wants more power for Senate to dismiss erring appointees of President The Senator representing Adamawa North District in the National Assembly, Abdulazeez Nyako has canvassed more powers for the Senate to punish erring government officials, just as it has the power to confirm major appointments by the President of the country. The senator representing the Adamawa central zone was elected in 2015 on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) but left for the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and obtained its
ticket for the coming governorship election. Nyako, who spoke to newsmen in Yola on the apparent helplessness of the Senate against ‘disobedient’ officials of the executive arm of government, said the rising cases of disrespect to the National Assembly by some government officials makes it necessary for the Senate to have punitive powers over such officials. He said such officials were arrogant and constantly ignoring
National Assembly summons to clarify issues on accountability. “Officials being arrogant and disobedient to the National Assembly is weakening the legislative arm of government and something needs to be done to save it from getting weaker in the interest of democracy,” Nyako said, reiterating that, “We need powers to appoint and remove. Someone with power to approve appointments should also have powers to take away such appointments.”

Rivers Labour Party governorship candidate cautions supporters against violence during polls The Labour Party governorship candidate in Rivers State, Chief Isaac Nwonwu has cautioned supporters of the party against indulging in violence during the 2019 polls. Nwonwu told newsmen after meeting with some of his supporters in Port Harcourt on Tuesday that he had no reason to indulge in violence. “We have no reason to indulge in violence; my gospel to my supporters is to go about the campaigns informing people of our programmes. “They must approach the electioneering with all sense of sanity and responsibility, which is what my party represents.’’ The Labour Party chieftain said
he was confident that Rivers would “have a breath of fresh air”, if he was elected governor of the state. “We are presenting to Rivers people a credible alternative capable of enthroning positive changes in all sectors. “We are taking pains to preach this message across the state; we can only have a smooth transition when there is peace.’’ According to him, the dominant political parties in the state have shown enough incapability to provide good governance. “We need an alternative; we must leave the old order; they have been unfair to us and it is very clear that they have nothing to offer,’’ Nwonwu said.
Elections: INEC shops for 18,000 ad-hoc staff in Enugu State The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has said that it will require 18,000 adhoc staff for the smooth conduct of the 2019 general elections in Enugu State. INEC’s Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in the state, Dr Emeka Ononamadu, disclosed this in Enugu on Tuesday during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN). The state has 260 political wards scattered within its 17 local government areas. He said, “INEC in Enugu State requires a total of 18,000 ad-hoc staff for the 2019 polls; made up of 16,438 active and 1,562 back- up adhoc staff.
Prof Mahmoud Yakubu
“This is to ensure that INEC does not in any way allow an untrained ad-hoc staff to take part in the conduct of the 2019 general elections in the state. “As you are aware, the full compliments of staff per voting location are four ad-hoc staff, excluding security officials.’’ The commissioner said that in Enugu State the bulk of the ad-hoc staff of the commission would be sourced from the National Youth Service Corps, ‘‘which already has over 15,000.’’ He added that, ‘‘the balance will be sourced from federal tertiary institutions in the state.” He said that mobilisation and recruitment of the ad-hoc staff and

Trouble brews as LASU management suspends remittance of check-off dues to ASUU Stories: Esther Taiwo Should the nationwide strike action embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) since November 4, 2018 be called off, it is unlikely that the Lagos State University chapter of the Union may resume academic activities. This is connected to the ongoing rancour in the University between ASUU-LASU and the management under the leadership of Prof Lanrewaju Fagbohun, who on Monday, directed the immediate suspension of remittance of checkoff dues of members of ASUU-LASU to the Bank Accounts pending when the management and operation of the account(s) are properly regularised. According to a press release signed by the Acting Head of Centre For Information, Press & Public Relations of the Vice Chancellor’s Office, Mr. Martins Adekoya, the VC acted in the exercise of his supervisory and general responsibility to the Governing Council of LASU to maintain good order in the University It would be recalled that the Governing Council of the Lagos State University on the 7th of September, 2017 dismissed Dr. Isaac Oyewunmi (erstwhile Chairman of ASUU-LASU) for acts of misconduct bordering on extortion of money from students; and Dr. Adebowale Adeyemi-Suenu (erstwhile Vice-Chairman of ASUU-LASU) for acts of misconduct bordering on manipulation of students’ results. According to the release, by virtue of their dismissal, they ceased to be members of ASUULASU from the 7th of September, 2017. The press release further explained that Management is in receipt of a petition signed by a number of members of ASUU-LASU which alleged that Dr. Isaac Oyewunmi is still part of those presently operating the Bank Account of ASUU-
LASU despite being a staff of another Institution. Further, that both Dr. Oyewunmi and Dr. Adeyemi-Suenu have illegally been collecting monthly allowance of N50,000 (Fifty Thousand Naira) each from the general monthly deductions of members of ASUU-LASU. The petitioners further alleged that the Management is acting in concert with the Executive of ASUU-LASU to defraud members of ASUULASU. The summary of the response of the Secretary ASUU-LASU, Dr. Tony Dansu, is that the above issues concern the internal workings of the Union and relates to the interpretation of the Union’s Constitution and Code of Practice. The relevant financial Institutions have, however, confirmed that Dr. Oyewunmi as at 9th January 2019 is a signatory to the Bank Accounts of ASUU-LASU. “The continued management and operation of ASUU-LASU Bank Accounts by Dr. Issac Oyewunmi borders on criminal conspiracy, fraud and corruption. The Management cannot allow the mechanisms of the University to be used to aid and abet fraud and corruption,” the VC stated. In a swift reaction, ASUU-LASU in a letter signed by the Secretary, Dr. Tony Dansu and Assistant Secretary, Dr. Adeolu Oyekan and addressed to the VC, said it was not the business of the university management to tell the union how to manage its funds. The letter, a copy of which was also sent to the visitor and governor of Lagos State, his deputy, Chairman, House Committee on Education, Lagos State House of Assembly, Chancellor of LASU, ProChancellor and Chairman and Governing Council of LASU, the union said it was not “abetting illegal operation of ASUU-LASU bank account” as falsely claimed by the management, stating ‘’for the avoidance of doubt, no union can illegally operate
its own account.’’ The letter further disclosed that in line with the constitution and extant practices of the union, only the National Executive Council (NEC) of the union can determine and recognise the leadership of, and signatories to a branch’s account. In this instance, Dr. Isaac Oyewumi is the recognised chairman in the ASUU-LASU branch. The Union reminded the VC that the purported dismissal of the chairman was still a subject of litigation in a court of law and that as a Senior Advocate of Nigeria and a law teacher for several years, the VC should know that this matter is subjaundice. “That Dr. Isaac Oyewumi and Dr. AdebowaleSuenu have been collecting a monthly allowance of N50, 000:00 each from the general monthly deductions of members of ASUU-LASU” is not only erroneous but clearly demonstrates a crass lack of understanding of the workings of our Great Union. “For the avoidance of doubt, check-off deductions of all members including that of ASUULASU belong to the national body of our union and in line with its commitment to and solidarity with victimised members, it often gives a monthly stipend until the determination of their illegal dismissal by a competent court of law. ASUULASU is only discharging this obligation on behalf of the national body. “In view of the foregoing, our union wishes to counsel that the university administration under your leadership, retrace its steps from this ignoble path which has become unfashionable in the annals of this university,’ the ASUU stated. The former VC, Prof. John Obafunwa, took a similar decision and the former Special Adviser on Education (SAE) to the ex-Governor Fashola ordered him to lift the suspension on ASUU-LASU check-off dues.
FG to establish technology acquisition centre in Alex-Ekwueme varsity The Director of Research and Development, Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Ndufu-Alike, Ebonyi State, Prof. Dannis Akoh, says plans are underway to establish a Technology Acquisition and Transfer Centre in the institution. Akoh disclosed this on Tuesday in an interview with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on the sidelines of the ongoing 2019 Technology and Innovation Expo in Enugu. He said that the centre would be established by the Federal Government to provide the needed encouragement in the advancement of research in the institution. He added that the Federal Government had seen the potential in researchers working in the institution, as well as the doggedness of the Vice
Chancellor, Prof. Chinedum Nwajiuba. He disclosed that the university, within its seven years of existence, made remarkable breakthrough in science, technology and innovation. Akoh said that a delegation from the institution were at the expo to showcase such breakthroughs, stressing that “as a young university, we have not done badly. We have within this period, made some scientific breakthroughs, including the development of computer keyboards that accommodate indigenous languages. “We are the first institution to do so in Nigeria and this even earned us the third position in the 2018 Technology and Innovation Expo. The professor explained that some of the
research products from the institution had already attracted the attention of the National Office for Technology Acquisition and Promotion (NOTAP). Akoh said that researchers from the institution were at the event to also search for investors that would be interested in the products. He commended the ingenuity and doggedness of researchers in the institution, saying they had done much in the face of little resources. “Our institution has a great future and with little partnership we shall go places. “We appeal to the government to help us to attract investors so that some of our products and research findings can hit the market place,” he said.

Meanwhile, the 2-Day event featured the likes of the Former Nigeria’s President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo who insisted at the Plenary Session that the nation’s challenges stemmed out of the inability of government agencies to implement government policies, adding that policy consistency and continuity were part of the bane of agribusiness in Nigeria. According to him, Nigeria’s problem was not lack of policy but policy implementation, consistency and continuity. Other participants include but not limited to the Vice-President of Malawi, His Excellency, Saulos Chilima; Minister of Finance, Lesotho, Hon. Dr. Moeketsi Majoro; Minister of Agriculture Development, Somaliland, Hon. Ahmed Seed; Deputy Minister for Food and Agriculture, Ghana, Hon. NLP expert trains professionals on setting, achieving higher goals in 2019 As 2019 begins, Nigerians have been advised to evolve their mind, language and behaviour for outstanding results. Addressing journalists in Lagos on the importance of Neuro Linguistic Programming to human development, a coach in the field, Mr. Rajiv Sharma, said people’s thinking skills, communication and habits are three fundamental pillars of all great achievements in life. “You are bound to set higher goals and achieve them when you prepare for it. Majority of people focus on things outside their control, but real power lies with you. Business people need to learn the art and science of NLP strategies and execution, this skill will help you achieve your business goals and life purpose”, he said. Speaking on the forthcoming NLP workshop slated Friday, February 8 to Thursday, February 14, 2019, Sharma said the workshop is designed for people to realise and expand their potentials. “People have huge wealth of resources within themselves and we don’t even explore 5-10% of it. When we work on our existing capacity and learn more, we expand our opportunities or otherwise our abilities shrink, and we start complaining about economy or other things that are taking us down,” he stated. Sharma posited that the workshop will enhance our Sensory Acuity that is source of all experiences, knowledge and actions needed to achieve goals adding that participants will also develop more effective behaviors and get rid of unwanted behaviors that are blocking them from achieving greatness in the field of our choice.

Explosions and gunfire heard in Kenyan capital Nairobi
As Brexit vote looms, protests held outside UK parliament Hundreds of pro- and antiBrexit campaigners are gathered outside the UK Parliament. There is no sign that Theresa May has done enough to muster the support she needs to win the
closing vote on Brexit. If she fails, a second referendum, a no-confidence vote and a general election are just the start of the potential Brexit effects in the near future.
Sculpture with Saudi flag to be removed from Ground Zero A sculpture partly featuring Saudi Arabia’s flag is being removed from the site of the 9/11 attack in New York. The artwork, called “Candy Nations”, shows a series of large
sweets wrapped in the flags of the G20 nations. However, after intense criticism, authorities have decided to move the exhibit away from Ground Zero.
Zimbabwe soldiers patrol streets after deadly protests
People being evacuated from the scene of the attack Two explosions and gunfire were heard at an upscale hotel complex in Nairobi, Kenya’s capital, on Tuesday afternoon, according to witnesses and police. The attack on the Dusit hotel complex - which also houses offices and banks - sent people fleeing for their lives, black smoke rising from the scene. “We are under attack,” a person in an office inside the complex told the Reuters news agency. “It is terrible. What I have seen is terrible. I have seen a human as I ran out and there is what looks like minced meat all over,” said one a man who said he ran from the scene. He did not elaborate further. Gunfire continued several minutes after the first reports. A bomb disposal unit was on the scene and vehicles were being
cordoned off for fear that they contained explosives. “That (attack) began with an attack at I&M bank with an explosion that targeted three vehicles in the parking lot and a suicide bomb,” Kenya police chief, Joseph Boinnet, said. Police have secured six floors out of seven at the Dusit D2 hotel in the complex that fighters attacked, he said. Somalia-based armed group al-Shabab claimed responsibility for the attack, saying that it was ongoing. “We are currently conducting an operation in Nairobi,” the group’s military operations spokesman, Abdiaziz Abu Mus’ab, told Al Jazeera. The attack came one day after trial began in another Nairobi attack

al-Shabab claimed responsibility for: the deadly Westgate mall attack that left 67 people dead in 2013. Kenyan prosecutors say the four suspects in the Westgate case currently on trial committed a terrorist act and used false documents. The men deny all charges. The East African country faced a spate of attacks after it sent its army into Somalia in 2011 to fight the alQaeda-linked group. Tuesday’s attack is exactly three years after al-Shabab overran a Kenyan army base in Somalia, killing dozens of soldiers. On April 2, 2015, in one of the most gruesome attacks on Kenyan soil, the armed group killed 148 people, most of them students, at a university in Garissa, eastern Kenya.
Soldiers patrolled city streets in Zimbabwe on Tuesday, as confrontations with angry civilians threatened to boil over a day after violent protests against a fuel price hike led to the death of three people, including a police officer. One of the dead was a police officer who was stoned to death by protesters in the city of Bulawayo, while two people died during protests in Chitungwiza, a town south of the capital Harare, and Kadoma, a town 141km to the west, police spokeswoman Charity Charamba told Reuters news agency on Tuesday. In Harare and Bulawayo, banks, schools, businesses and the stock market remained shut as many residents stayed at home on the second day of a three-day general strike. Most shops remained closed and minibus taxis that usually transport workers from the suburbs to the Harare city centre were not running. Security forces have also been deployed to stave off further demonstrations, witnesses told Reuters, and people in Harare said they could no longer access the internet. Information Minister Monica Mutsvangwa said she was not aware of an internet shutdown and Zimbabwe’s three mobile telecoms firms had no immediate comment. The latest unrest followed sharp increases in fuel prices decreed by President Emmerson Mnangagwa five

months after post-election violence during which six people died when the army intervened to quell trouble. Zimbabweans accuse Mnangagwa of failing to live up to pre-election promises to kick-start growth, having seen their purchasing power eroded by rampant inflation. The government more than doubled petrol prices at the weekend after months of shortages that saw drivers queuing for hours to fill up. Essentials such as bread and medicines have also been scarce. As security forces faced accusations of heavy-handedness and more protests threatened to break out, Labour Minister Sekai Nzenza said public workers would get a monthly supplement of between 5 and 23 percent of their salaries from January to March while wage negotiations with unions continued. Opposition politician Jacob Mafume denounced the “needless loss of lives” during the protests. “Many have been injured, some of them seriously,” Mafume said. On Monday, the police dispersed hundreds of protesters who burned tyres, erected barricades and looted businesses on the first day of the general strike. Mnangagwa, who is on an official visit in Moscow, said Zimbabwe was interested in receiving Russian loans and might need Russia’s help in modernising its army, RIA news agency reported.

Crystal Palace not giving up on Victor Moses, keen on Mikel Obi
Despite several Premier League clubs and Turkish side aiming to sign Victor Moses, Crystal Palace is not giving up on having their former star returning to Selhurst Park. Also, The Eagles is also weighing up the option of bringing John Obi Mikel back into the premiership after two seasons in the Chinese Super League. According to TeamTalk, Crystal Palace are keen on bringing Moses back to Selhurst Park, nearly a decade after he quit the team. Crystal Palace are eager to strengthen their squad and they could snap up the Nigerian pair. 28-year-old Moses has not tasted action much at Chelsea this season and may be heading toPalace on loan, with Coach Roy Hodgson
willing to strike a loan deal. The former England coach is also in the transfer market for Obi Mikel, but there are speculations that several Premier League clubs are keen on having the 31-yearold midfielder, who is a free agent having left China’s Tianjin Teda. Apart from Moses and Mikel, Palace are looking to make room in their squad and are willing to move on a number of names, and one of whom is Jairo Riedewald. The 22-year-old has failed to impress since joining from Ajax in 2017 – but he is now set to leave on loan. He has options to return to Holland, while there are also Spanish and French clubs keen – although he could remain in England with Middlesbrough expressing an interest.

Arsenal veteran goalie Petr Cech to retire at end of season Legendary Arsenal and Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech has announced he will retire from football at the conclusion of the Premier League season after a glittering 15-year career in England’s top flight. In a statement released through his social media accounts on Tuesday, the 36-year-old said he felt he had achieved everything in the game and was ready to hang up the gloves. “This is my 20th season as a professional player and it has been 20 years since I signed my first professional contract, so it feels like the right time to announce that I will retire at the end of this season,” Cech said. “Having played 15 years in the
Premier League, and won every single trophy possible, I feel like I have achieved everything I set out to achieve. I will continue to work hard at Arsenal to hopefully win one more trophy this season, then I am looking forward to seeing what life holds for me off the pitch.” The Arsenal no.1, who joined from bitter rivals Chelsea in 2015, holds a number of records in England’s top flight including most clean sheets (161) and longest streak without conceding a goal (903 minutes). He was crucial to Chelsea’s dominance during the mid 00s until his transfer to Arsenal, helping the Blues win four Premier League titles, four FA Cups and a Champions League trophy.
NFF supremo Amaju Pinnick targets 2019 AFCON title Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) president Amaju Pinnick has targeted the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations as the Super Eagles’ main priority. Nigeria has claimed the AFCON three previous times, with their most recent triumph arriving in 2013, when a team led by the late Stephen Keshi won the trophy in South Africa. Speaking at the weekend in Lagos, Pinnick insists a fourth continental title is overdue – especially considering the talent at Nigeria’s disposal. “There are so many competitions this year and we intend to, as usual, put our best foot forward in each and everyone of
them,” said the NFF boss. “The target always is to emerge victorious. However, the very big one that we do not want to miss is the AFCON title. “We have won it three times but we want it for a fourth time so that we can close the gap with the likes of Egypt and Cameroon.” Egypt, the hosts for the 2019 tournament, have won the AFCON a record seven times, while Cameroon secured their fifth trophy when they triumphed at the last edition in 2017. “The NFF will work with the technical crew to achieve an excellent preparation
of the Super Eagles for the tournament. Everything legitimate would be done to ensure the Super Eagles triumph in Egypt,” continued Pinnick, who added that preparation will begin in March with the final qualifier against the Seychelles and a friendly with Egypt. “The match against Seychelles will serve as the beginning of our preparations for the AFCON 2019, to be followed four days later by a friendly against the Egyptian national team at the same venue. “The team would likely play two matches during its final training camp before the AFCON finals.”
Super Falcons land in China for four-nation tourney The Super Falcons arrived Meizhou, China on Tuesday (today) morning ahead of their participation at the four-nation invitational tournament in the country. 20 players including top stars; Tochukwu Oluehi, Onome Ebi, Francisca Ordega, Rita Chikwelu, Ngozi Okobi made the trip for the competition. The duo of former African best female footballer, Asisat Oshoala and Desire Oparanozie were however left out of the squad. Thomas Dennerby’s charges will face hosts, the Steel Roses of China in their opening game of the competition on Thursday. Romania and South Korea are the
other teams that are participating in the competition. The competition will run from January 16th to 21st. The African champions will also participate in another invitational competition tagged the Cyprus Cup in February 2019. The West Africans will face Belgium, Austria and Slovakia in Group B of the competition. The Super Falcons will use the invitational competitions to fine tune strategies ahead of the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup in France. They are drawn against hosts France, Norway and Korea Republic in Group A for the 2019 World Cup.
Kylian Mbappe can become the new Pele Brazil great Pele has tipped Kylian Mbappe to match his legendary achievements. Pele, revered as one of the greatest players of all time, won the World Cup three times as well as guiding Santos to six Brazilian league titles and two Copa Libertadores in a glittering playing career that ended in 1977. Paris Saint-Germain striker Mbappe has a long way to go to coming close to matching the 78-year-old but made a promising start by playing a leading role in France’s World Cup success in Russia. “He won the World Cup at 19, I was only 17,” said Pele, who shot to prominence as a teenager in Brazil’s World Cup success of 1958. “I teased him saying he had almost
equalised. “I think he can become the new Pele. Many people think I say that for a laugh, but no, it’s not a joke.” Mbappe has emerged as arguably the key man at PSG, ahead of Brazil captain Neymar, who continues to be linked with a move back to Barcelona. The world’s most expensive player has occasionally struggled at the Parc des Princes but Pele was quick to offer encouragement. “A father does not criticise, he educates,” he said. “He is a son of Santos. “I want the best for him, for Brazil, for our national team. “I will do anything to help and move him forward.”
Real Madrid will have to pay £100m if they want Chelsea’s Eden Hazard Chelsea have slapped a huge, £100 million price tag on star player and Belgium captain Eden Hazard if he wants to join Real Madrid, according to reports. That is despite the Belgian wizard having only one year left on his contract after this one. According to the Telegraph, Hazard hopes to find out soon whether or not the Spanish giants will make an offer for his services in the Summer. Blues head coach Maurizio Sarri last month insisted it was time for a decision to be made over whether Hazard extends his contract at Stamford Bridge or the club cash in on his talent. If Hazard gets the assurances
he wants from Real and signals to Chelsea he is keen to make the Spanish capital his next destination, £100m would apparently be the price for the 28-year-old. Chelsea have already bought Borussia Dortmund’s Christian Pulisic for £58m in the January transfer window. They are still reportedly trying to bring Argentina striker Gonzalo Higuain in from Juventus, which would pave the way for misfiring striker Alvaro Morata to leave. Chelsea midfielder Cesc Fabregas, meanwhile, is heading to Monaco. As previously reported, Madrid could also be in the market for Tottenham Hotspur’s attacking midfielder, Christian Eriksen.
