How 7 listed firms earned N1.01trn in one year Continued from page 1 on a downward trend with investors losing a total sum of N291.5 billion. Looking at N1.01 trillion profit declared by Dangote Cement Plc, Zenith Bank Plc, Guaranty Trust Bank Plc (GTBank), Stanbic Bank Holdings Plc, Nestle Nigeria Plc, Nigerian Breweries Plc, and Seplat Petroleum Development Company Plc in 2018, they grew their earnings by 17.7 per cent compared to N854.5 billion reported in 2017 financial year results. The above companies maintained a dividend payout policy to their shareholders, a key contributing factor that has impacted on their share price on the NSE. Also, worthy of note is the fact that financial institutions among the seven companies considered in this piece reduced their impairment loss on financial and nonfinancial instruments, which is another factor that aided growth in profits during the year under review. However, Nigerian Breweries out of the seven companies reported a decline in profit PBT, attributable to slow sales and excise duty expenses that was introduced by the Federal Government in 2018. The multinational breweries company reported 36.6 per cent drop in PBT to N29.42

billion from N46.46 billion reported in 2017. But Dangote Cement with increased sales in Nigeria reported a 3.9 per cent increase in PBT to N300.81 billion in 2018 from N289.59 billion reported in 2017, leading other listed companies on NSE in terms of profitability. Similarly, Zenith Bank reported N231.7 billion PBT in 2018, which represented 16.2 per cent increase over N199 billion reported in 2017 while GTBank came close with N215.6 billion PBT in 2018 from N197.68 billion reported in 2017, translating into 9.1 per cent increase. Another financial institution, Stanbic IBTC Holdings reported N88.15 billion report from N61.2 billion reported in 2017. In addition, Nestle Nigeria’s PBT grew by 22.6 per cent to N59.75 billion from N46.8 billion in 2017 while Seplat Petroleum Development Company reported N80.6billion PBT in 2018, 499.2 per cent increase over N13.5 billion reported in 2017. As for dividend payout to shareholders, Nigerian Breweries payout to shareholders came as a surprise as the company reported weak corporate earnings. Despite 41.2 per cent decline in profit after tax, the management of Nigerian Breweries maintained its dividend payment policy, proposing a total dividend of N373 kobo per share after (2017:

N3.13 kobo per share) based on the issued share capital of 7,996,902,051 ordinary shares of 50 kobo each subject to approval by shareholders. The company in 2016 had proposed N3.58 dividend, 0.6 per cent or N0.02 below N3.60 dividend that was paid to shareholders in 2015. On the heels of improved profits, the management of Dangote Cement proposed a dividend of N16.00 per 50 kobo ordinary share for 2018 financial year from N10.50 per 50 kobo ordinary share paid in 2017. Meanwhile, GTBank proposed a final dividend of N2.45k per unit of ordinary share held by shareholders in addition to interim dividend of 30k per unit of ordinary share bringing total dividend for 2018 financial year to N2.75k per unit of an ordinary share. The shareholders of GTBank had approved a total dividend of N2.70 per unit of ordinary share for 2017 audited results. For Zenith Bank, the board had declared an interim dividend of N0.30 and a final dividend of N2.50 per share 31 December 2017: interim-N0.25, final- N2.45) from the retained earnings account as at 31 December 2018. Supplementary elections: Buhari won’t change results - Presidency Mathew Dadiya, Tom Okpe, Abuja & Samuel Luka, Bauchi

The Presidency has assured that President Muhammadu Buhari would not tamper with the outcomes of supplementary elections holding this week, saying that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is fully in charge. The Presidency also cautioned against the “hate spewing, incitement to violence and the polarising statements by so-called political leaders “as a number of states brace up for supplementary elections prescribed by the National Electoral Commission (INEC). Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, on Sunday, stated that the Presidency “rejects unfair and ridiculous criticisms of President Buhari’s apparent disinterest in the upcoming elections in some states by party members who wrongfully assume that the President will abuse power by changing results to favour them.” According to the Presidency, past Presidents of Nigeria were known to interfere in inconclusive elections, and that is why party members appear to be upset that the same thing is not happening now, but President Buhari is a different kind of leader. Shehu stated that President

Buhari swore to defend the constitution and will not veer off from that. “The constitution of Nigeria gives the President no such powers. It is unfair and ridiculous to criticise President Buhari for not going against the constitution. “Party members in states where there will be supplementary elections then need to be reminded that they need to work hard to earn their people’s votes, rather than expect President Buhari to manipulate INEC in their favour. “Interestingly, while members of the ruling APC party were criticising the President for not interfering on their behalf, members of the opposition were condemning the President based on their assumptions that he would definitely interfere, as many in the opposition did while in power. “Under President Buhari, INEC had been and will be completely independent throughout the elections, free from any interference. President Buhari is a man of conviction, and the manipulation of election results goes against everything he stands for INEC is completely in charge,” the Presidency added. Meanwhile, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Yekini Nabena, has

said that his party rejected in entirety the position taken by the Independent Electoral Commission (INEC) regarding the governorship inconclusive election in Bauchi State, accusing the Festus Okoye-led committee of evil plot against the ruling party. The electoral body had earlier declared the governorship election inconclusive and set a date for rerun but suddenly changed the decision based on the reports submitted by a committee headed by Festus Okoye to investigate the issue. Speaking with newsmen on Sunday in Abuja, APC’s Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Yekini Nabena, said his party has rejected the decision taken by the INEC on the governorship election results from Tafawa Balewa Local Government Area of Bauchi State. Nabena said the position taken by INEC contravened the provisions of the Electoral Act 2010 as amended. “Considering the letters and spirit of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (1999 as amended), and the INEC Guidelines for 2019 General Elections, INEC is not empowered to reverse any decision taken at the Collation Centre by the Returning Officer appointed for that purpose. “Such decisions can only be reversed by a Court of law, especially when INEC cannot

Buhari

approbate and reprobate, “the party stated. The party also accused the Festus Okoye-led committee of denying it fair hearing as its agent were not invited during the hearing to ascertain the circumstances leading to the cancellation of the Tafawa Balewa Local Government Area election result. “The composition of the committee is also questionable as the Committee chairman, Festus Okoye Esq, is a close ally of and ex-personal Solicitor of Hon. Yakubu Dogara of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

UMCN flays call for declaration of state of emergency in Taraba Okerafor Athanatius, Jalingo

The Director, Connectional Ministries of the Southern Conference of the United Methodist Church in Nigeria (UMCN), Rev. Philip Micah Dopah, has described as senseless, a call on President Muhammadu Buhari to declare a state of emergency in Taraba State by a Political Group from the state. Rev. Dopah, who doubles as the Leader of the Southern Conference of the UMCN, stated this while briefing the media in Jalingo, the Taraba State capital. While reacting to a call by a Group in the state under the umbrella of Taraba Progressive Movement that President Muhammadu Buhari should declare a state of emergency in Taraba because the

security situation in the state has worsened and that the curfew declared by the State Government did not stop the killings of innocent people and destruction of properties by political thugs, the Christian Clergy said nothing can change the will of God for Taraba. He said: “The Group is not unaware of the fact that during the Presidential Campaign Rally of President Muhammadu Buhari in Taraba State where so many people lost their lives, the Governorship Candidate of APC in the state asked Mr. President to send Security Agencies to the state during elections to help him have his way”. “All the security challenges confronting the state and Jalingo in particular before, during and after the elections

emanated from the request by the APC Gubernatorial Candidate during PMB’s Rally in Jalingo. “For somebody to think of declaring a state of emergency in Taraba, we cannot take it, we resist it in its entirety, we are not in the War zone and we are not in the Military era. “We know their activities, they are doing it deliberately in order to truncate the will of Taraba people”. Philip Micah Dopah further called on the people of the state to continue to be law abiding, live in peace and support the administration of Governor Darius Dickson Ishaku for developmental projects in the state. He said in a political process, there must be winners and losers but all must embrace one

another. “One thing that baffled me was that the Candidates of the various political parties signed a Peace Accord with the Commissioner of Police that they would follow the part of peace before, during and after the 2019 elections”, said Rev. Dopah. Our Correspondent gathered that since the Governorship election result was declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Jalingo, the Taraba State capital, has been thrown into violence with a great number of people reportedly killed at different quarters. By the time of filing this report, normalcy has gradually returned to the grey areas while 24 hour curfew has been relaxed.

“No justice can be done by the committee chairman who is interested in the whole issues and the instant circumstances,” he said. The Bauchi State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has however expressed confidence in the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) over the directive to resume collation of cancelled votes in Tafawa Balewa Local Government Area of the state. Alhaji Hamza Koshe Akuyam, who is the state Chairman of the party in Bauchi, told journalists that the step taken by the National Headquarters of Electoral Commission to look into the issues surrounding the electoral process in the state has been set right by the Committee that was sent to investigate the matter. “We raised an alarm over the issue of the hiked cancelled votes in Ningi local council which was initially put at 25,330 but was actually 2,533, they have upheld that. Also, we cried out that the Tafawa Balewa local government shouldn’t be cancelled because there was no violence or destruction at the pulling units to justify that and they have ordered resumption of collation on that. We believe in INEC,” the PDP Chairman said. Akuyam, who called on the Peoples Democratic Party supporters to remain calm and let peace reign, expressed optimism that his party will emerge victorious with or without re-run election in Bauchi State. He however, called for the redeployment of the Bauchi State Commissioner of Police, Ali Janga and DSS boss for been biased during the elections.

Bindow will only concede defeat after fresh re-run - Dollar Tom Garba, Yola

The gubernatorial candidate of the Movement for the Restoration and Defence of Democracy (MRDD), Rev Eric Theman Dollar, said the call by some Adamawa State elite asking Governor Muhammadu Umar Jibrilla Bindo to concede defeat for Rt Hon Umaru Fintiri is a selfish call and not in tandem with the tenets of democracy. “Conceding defeat is an honourable thing to a good leader when there is clean and credible elections conducted and a winner has emerged not when whole lot of irregularities were seen to marred the election,” Eric said. According to him, Governor Bindo of All Progressives Congress (APC) and Fintiri of Peoples Democracy party (PDP) are candidates whose scored votes are being challenged by the court as a result of Independent National

Electoral Commission (INEC) refusal to include the logo of his party in the March 9th governorship election. “I thought by now the socalled elders should think on how a fresh election will be conducted in the interest of all Adamawa State sons and daughters that are wishing themselves well on who will become the next Governor of the state,” he said. Recall that former Governor Boni Haruna, and one-time minister while reacting said: “We have reliably gathered that the total number of permanent voters cards collected in the 44 polling units is 31027, a figure that would not reverse Fintiri’s winning lead even after the supplementary elections in the 44 units. Just as the registered voters in the PUs is now only 34,101”. For Abdullahi Prambe, a leading political figure in the state, “we have gleaned from INEC records that 34,101 is actually the registered voters

Gov Bindow

in the affected polling units, as against 40,988 declared by the state returning officer”. Also reacting, Babachir David Lawan, former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), who is a chieftain of the APC, said “the only honourable thing to do is for my party’s candidate, Governor Bindow

to concede and give peace a chance. Eric Dollar reiterated that the people calling on the candidate of a particular party to concede defeat in favour of a candidate of another party when the election is under court injunction are never having Adamawa people at heart.

I’ll continue to promote women advancement – Aisha Buhari Wife of the President, Mrs. Aisha Muhammadu Buhari, has reaffirmed her commitment towards promoting the socio economic and political advancement of women in Nigeria through her Future Assured Programme. She was speaking at the NEXT LEVEL thank you celebration and luncheon at Oriental Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos at the weekend Mrs. Buhari said the President has already promised to engage more women and youth in his second term. She therefore urged them not to relent in the collective duty to make

the NEXT LEVEL a reality. “I wish to express my appreciation to Nigerians, especially the women and youth for their unprecedented contribution towards our success at the election. In particular, I must mention the role played by the Women and Youth Presidential Campaign Team I initiated to support the APC Presidential Campaign Council,” she added. Mrs. Buhari attributed the success of the President to the firm belief Nigerians have in the ability of his administration’s developmental agenda to

take them to the NEXT LEVEL. She therefore called on the President and Vice President to continue to build on the foundation of the good works they started in order to justify this confidence. Earlier, wife of the Vice President, Mrs. Dolapo Osinbajo in her remarks said the event was convened to celebrate all those that contributed in one way or the other to the successful re-election of the APC to lead the country for the next four years. She said the party campaigned through all the states of the country, even

going from door to door to ensure that the support of everyone was canvassed and expressed happiness that Nigerians responded positively to the campaign. Entertainers like KWAM 1, Daddy Showkey and Sugar Band entertained guests at the event while goodwill messages were delivered by the Governorelect of Lagos state, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who represented Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, wife of Nasarawa state Governor, Dr. Mairo Almakura, APC Woman Leader, Mrs. Salamatu Baiwa, Gen. Buba Marwa and Mrs. Joke Silva.

Ekiti, Chinese govt to strengthen relations Gbenga Sodeinde, Ado Ekiti

The Chinese government has said it was making efforts to strengthen the China-Nigeria relations at the sub-national level and in particular with Ekiti state whose economic plans have impressed the Chinese government. Speaking in Ado Ekiti during a courtesy call on the state Governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, the Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Dr. Zhou Pingjan, said the Chinese government can “play a good role” in the four cardinal agenda of the Fayemiled administration in Ekiti state because the agenda also aligns with the Chinese government’s

programmes. The envoy who stated that it was high time to strengthen the China-Nigeria relations for the benefit of the people of the two countries, said China can promote made in Ekiti products “in a win-win relationship.” Pingjan, who described Fayemi as a friendly governor said the country would miss his service as the minister because of the positive impacts he made while he superintended over the sector. “The main purpose is to promote China -Nigeria relationS at the sub-national level. It is time for us to strengthen relations to bring benefitS to the people of the two countries. I am glad to know that

some Chinese companies are working in Ekiti. “The areas of interest of Ekiti government can be achieved in the direction of the China relations and the country can play a good role in it. China can promote made in Ekiti products in a win-win relationship,” the envoy said. Earlier, Governor Fayemi had stated that his government was keen on a partnership that would help his administration deliver concrete development to the people of Ekiti state. The governor who highlighted the agenda of his administration solicited that the existing business relationship with the Chinese be strengthened for rapid grassroots development.

Fayemi said: “China is a country that we are very interested in because of the understanding of what we want to do. We are also quite interested in development because we are keen to provide concrete development for our people. “We already have some of your companies operating in this state particularly in the construction industry. We look forward to continuing the cooperation with your team and your teams here in the area of priority to us; education and knowledge economy, agriculture and rural development, social investment and infrastructure and industrial development.”

I’ve no reason to quit PDP, retire from politics now- Jonathan Former President Goodluck Jonathan has said that he has no reason to quit the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), or retire from politics for now. He made the statement on Sunday, through his Media Adviser, Ikechukwu Eze, in reaction to a report by an online publication which claimed that the expresident had resigned from PDP and quit politics. Eze’s statement described the news as fake, saying that it was a “calculated attempt to rubbish the elder statesman”. “The PDP gave Jonathan the platform to serve as Deputy Governor, Governor, Vice President and eventually President of Nigeria. Jonathan has no reason at this time to resign his membership of the platform. “Those who derive pleasure in spreading fake information had better occupy themselves with more productive endeavours that are obviously more relevant to nation-building.

“Obviously, this is a fabrication borne out of mischief as the publishers of the fake story claimed that the former President made the statement while being interviewed by the Nigeria News Agency (NNA). “There is absolutely no way the former President could have spoken to a nonexistent news agency, as none in the country goes by that name,” the statement stated.

approval. In addition, the board of Seplat Petroleum Development Company has recommended a final dividend of $0.05 per share for 2018 financial year. Commenting on these developments, the Managing Director, Cowry Assets Limited, Mr. Johnson Chukwu, said the steady increase in the nation’s economy impacted companies earnings. He said: “I think an improvement over the previous year’s economy which led to existing from recession played a critical role in companies reporting a good profit. “Because these companies are operating within a macroeconomic environment and we have seen the improvement in GDP from 0.80 per cent growth in 2017 to 1.93 per cent in 2018 that is beginning to reflect in the performance of corporate organisation particularly those in the financial services industry. “But you might as well note that there has been a gradual improvement in their Non-Performing Loans which is a critical factor in determining their profitability. “Upon going the pipeline, we also see marginal

improvement in the bottom line which can attribute to the marginal improvement in the growth rate of the economy. “So, based on current economic indicators, we see further expansion in GDP of the economy, we should expect that corporate organisation maintained better performance this year.” Also, the Managing Director, Highcap Securities, Mr. David Adnori, said, “Steady improvement in the macroeconomic environment at which these companies operate play a critical role.” Speaking from a shareholders perspective, Chairman of Progressive Shareholders Association of Nigeria (PSAN), Mr. Boniface Okezie, said: “It is a good performance by these companies and that is the resilience from Nigerian companies, even as the economy is hard and tougher. “I think with prudence, we also should give kudos to the management of these companies that have reported the wonderful result. He added: “The likes of GTBank and Zenith Bank do not disappoint when it matters most and that is what has been keeping the banks.”

Court acquits woman of alleged patricide in A’Ibom Isaac Job, Uyo A high court in Akwa Ibom state has discharged and acquitted one Glory Dan, who was charged for the murder of her father, late Mr. Bassey Dan of Mbiakpan Atan Village in Ibiono Ibom Council Area of the state. Justice Eden Akpan after going through the submissions of both the prosecution and defence counsels, concluded that there was no proof by the prosecution of the use of lethal weapon by the accused person to inflict injury on the deceased. Delivering judgment on suit no HIT/3c/2017, he said that “I do not believe the attempt of the prosecution to infer that the cane the accused person collected from the deceased and used on him in retaliation caused the death of the deceased.” The accused was brought before the court on May 5, 2016, when she decided to confront the father, late Mr. Bassey for allegedly been responsible for her marital problems.

It was gathered that the accused decided to attack the deceased because it was revealed to her in a dream by her late mother that her father was the one behind the death of her two husbands. According to the statement she volunteered to the police when arrested, she had visited the father and requested that he open the door on that fateful day, but the father refused and she forcibly gained access to the house through the window, demanding to know why the father was silent about her marital problems. It was learnt that she told the court that instead of responding to the question, the father pulled a cane he kept behind the door and flogged her. In retaliation, the accused snatched the cane and flogged the father twice before running out of the room as the father was chasing her until she fell down at her late mother’s grave. When the Investigating Police Officer (IPO), Insp. Gabriel Sunday visited the scene, he told the court in his evidence that there was evidence of dried blood

in the room, but surprisingly, the police failed to conduct an autopsy to ascertain the cause of death. However, the judge recalled that all the witnesses called by the prosecution never testified as eye witnesses, leaving the accused who was the only defense witness to claimed that as at the time she collected the cane, to beat her father in retaliation and left the compound, the father was not dead. Citing many authorities, including the position of the Supreme Court in Joseph Lori & Anor vs the state (1980) NSCQR 212 at 225, where it was held that “a more useful medical evidence would not only have unequivocally established the cause of death, but may have provided the necessary nexus between the death of the victim and the act of the accused, Justice Edem concluded that the prosecution has failed to prove its case beyond reasonable doubt. “Therefore the issues of determination are resolved in favour of the defense,” he said.

Short News Adamawa: PDP stalwart warns of consequences of failure to declare guber result Tom Garba, Yola A chieftain of the Peoples Democracy Party (PDP), Dr. Umar Ardo has warned that Adamawa state may be engulfed in crisis if the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) fails to comply with a court to declare the result of the governorship election held in the state. According to him, if INEC fails to comply with the ruling will only further complicate issues and project the commission as pursuing a pre-determined agenda. “In my opinion, if it is actually true a court indeed issued an order and INEC refused to comply, then INEC is clearly at fault. It is not only wrong, but is a clear path to anarchy. Because if a court of competent jurisdiction gives orders and it’s duly served, then we’re all duty bound to obey no matter how fallible that order may be. “If INEÇ has an issue with such an order it should appeal against it within the due process of law, but to ignore it blatantly just because it doesn’t agree with it is the highest act of impunity,” he said Umar warned that If everyone should ignore and act against court orders that they or don’t agree with, then we’ll have no society to cohabit in. “I am sure neither the court nor the society would congratulate INEC for disobeying court orders. That’s my candid opinion and advise to the commission,” he added The PDP chieftain stated that the court order issued by a Yola high court for INEC not to proceed with its scheduled re-run election in Adamawa state which the commission is ignoring is an excuse for disobedience and anarchy to prevail.

Police vow to fish out perpetrators of Sanga attack

The Police Command in Kaduna state on Sunday vowed to fish out the attackers of Nandu village of Sanga Local Government Area of Kaduna state and bring them to justice. The Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Yakubu Sabo, who made this known in Kaduna, said the command had mobilized operatives to the scene of the incident and taken the injured and dead to the hospital. Sabo said that a joint patrol team of the police and the army were in the area to forestall possible break down of law and order, adding that the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Ahmad Abdurrahaman, had condemned the killing and commiserated with the families of victims of the attack. According to him, Abdulrahaman has advised the affected community against taking the laws into their hands and to allow justice to take its course. He explained that unknown gunmen entered Nandu village on March 16, shot dead nine persons, injured two others and torched several houses.

INEC committee denied us fair hearing - Bauchi APC

The All Progressives Congress (APC) Bauchi state Chapter alleged that the factfinding committee sent by the Independent National Electoral Commission to probe the irregularities in the governorship election denied the party fair hearing. Alhaji Uba Nana, the state chairman of the party made the allegation at a press conference in Bauchi. INEC announced on Friday night that a new returning officer will resume the collation of the Bauchi governorship election results on Tuesday. It also amended the result of four polling units in Ningi Local Government from 25, 330 to 25, 333. The decision meant that the commission will announce the winner of the election thereafter. “The fact-finding committee chaired by Festus Okoye, the national commissioner and chairman of information and voter education committee denied fair hearing to APC as a political party whose agents were not invited during hearing of the facts leading to the cancellation of the results of Tafawa Balewa. “Any decision taken in violation of fair hearing is illegal, null and void,” he said. According to Nana, the composition of the committee is also questionable as the committee chairman is a close ally and former solicitor to Yakubu Dogara of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Nana stressed that no justice can be done by the committee chairman who is interested in the whole issues and the instant circumstances.

Cleric sues for peace in Bauchi guber re-run Samuel Luka, Bauchi Following the controversial cancellation of the Tafawa Balewa guber result and the declaration of Bauchi state gubernatorial election as inconclusive by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and its subsequent reversal by the electoral body, a cleric has appealed for calm from citizens of the state. Reverend Shuaibu Byel, who made the appeal said that the people should remain calm, law -abiding and orderly as they await the final results of the gubernatorial election.

Byal made the appeal yesterday while reacting to the political situation arising from the conduct of the elections in the state. He pointed out that what the state needs now is peace and peaceful coexistence amongst the citizens. He stated said that “our close to 20 years of democracy since 1999 is crumbling and all true democrats must wake up to salvage it. All of us should embrace the path to peaceful conduct of our elections. We should not allow conflict permutations to escalate into crisis. “From the look of things, INEC’s lack of transparency in dealing with the gubernatorial election in Bauchi

state in particular and other states as inconclusive are hand writings on the wall to allow conflict, thereby causing serious drawbacks in our growing democracy,” the cleric added. He wondered how voided or cancelled votes were made to be valid, adding that “we are to fight for freedom and liberty, to make life free and for a new world. Please, let us help to free Bauchi state and Nigeria from greed, let us love humanity and not hate, embrace peace, unity and progress.” According to the him, the people have spoken through the ballot and have made their choice of who to govern them.

Open letter to Buhari on Nigerian women

Toun Okewale Sonaiya

On behalf of Nigerian women home and abroad who are lovers of peace and believers in Democracy, congratulations on your victory at the just concluded presidential Elections of 23rd February 2019. This is indeed not an ordinary achievement for the majority of the Nigerian people to decide to keep faith with you despite our renowned reputation of impatience. This speaks to the uncommon faith reposed in you as a person of integrity. While I do not want to soil your victory celebration, I want you to know that your victory is not a referendum on what could have been achieved for Nigerian women in the area of representation and inclusion, rather it is more of a reflection of our belief in the great things you still have up your sleeves. Your Excellency, you will recall that even your opponents agree that your 2015 victory was a watershed moment in our history that signaled a new beginning of great possibilities. Unfortunately, we have had less to celebrate in the area of women representation

in your governance and the feminization of poverty in Nigeria. Amongst other not so impressive statistics in the last 4 years, you nominated only six women out of 36 ministerial positions. This represents a paltry 16% as against the 31% of women representation in the administration before you. Particularly worthy of note, are the millions of women across ethnic, religious and even class divide who voted for you in 2015 and have done same in the 2019 elections. While the data released by INEC on collected PVCs for the 2019 elections do not break down by sex, available 2015 presidential election voter turnout data shows that housewives were the third highest group out of the nine groups that voted. In 2015, three million, six hundred and sixtyseven thousand, and seventy-six (3,667,076) housewives voted in the presidential election, placing next to students (4,480,708) and civil servants (4,628,433). Similarly, housewives rank third on the list of registered voters by group in the 2019 election. That fraction out of women’s vote

represent 14.10 per cent of the total registered voters by group, next to farmers/fishers (16.23 per cent) and students (26.57 per cent). This figure does not include the millions of women across the various other groups who make up the total votes from women. I was privileged to attend and speak at the Women Political Aspirants Advocacy Summit last year. It was organised by the National Council of Women Societies in partnership with The National Centre for Women Development, Women in Politics Forum and the Office of the wife of the President of Nigeria. We were honoured and elated when you graced us with your presence and a speech, and despite the cynicism of a few that sat beside me about the timing and sincerity of support for increase participation, most of us believed you when you declared your support for the 35% affirmative Act policy. 2019 is that time for you to deliver on that promise. Mr. President, as we anticipate your swearing-in ceremony for the second term, history

beckons that you rise to the occasion and walk your talk by ensuring you lead the way in the implementation of the 35% affirmative action. You must be INTENTIONAL and DELIBERATE; to foster good governance and show that you’re accountable to true democracy by appointing more Women. A gentle reminder your Excellency that Ethiopia under a man had a 50/50 gender balance cabinet to the applause of the global community. Today, a woman is steering that ship. Rwandan women make up 64% of its parliament, 50% of its cabinet & 44% in Judiciary. Under your renewed leadership, Nigeria must reclaim and maintain its position as African Giant. It is said that uneasy lies the head that wears the Crown, and we will continue to pray for the Almighty God to grant you the wisdom, knowledge and understanding to stir the ship of our Nigeria but you must acknowledge and embrace at least 35% Women in your government.

When to pray for political leaders and when to pray them out of power

Ademola Adeoye

The fundamental, deepseated and elemental issue I am raising right now has been debated ferociously for many decades amongst the Christian population in our promising nation and the whole of Africa. Many people believe that no matter how bad a political leader is that the only job Christians have—is to continue to pray for him—for wisdom and long life. They are of the opinion that it is the will of God. For decades, we have been praying for tyrants and visionless political-leaders to live long, and we have been praying for wisdom for them, so that they can continue to loot our collective patrimony. Many Christians still believe that God is still allowing wicked people to get to power, so that He can teach the citizens of that country some lessons as an effect of their sins. They believe that God has forgiven individual’s sins while retaining that of the whole nation. It is a very laughable belief that is confusing many emerging Christians—who are reading between the lines of God’s word! Also, same people who believe that God still raises wicked, thoughtless and vision-less political leaders to punish the African nations believe that because of people’s sins that God does not punish the people with sicknesses, diseases, misfortune and backwardness. They believe that God is only blessing the people today, not cursing them.

But when it comes to the issue of the nations on the continent of Africa, what they believe changes overnight. Some months ago, someone told me that God is the one who allows wicked people to get to power, so He can teach the affected nations some lessons! If he does not use sicknesses, diseases and adversities to teach people lessons, how can He now be using wicked, lazy and visionless leaders to teach His people in Africa some lessons? They also believe that anyone in power is the will of God, even if the person rigs and snatches ballot-boxes to get themselves to power. They believe that an illegality can represent the God who is too holy to behold iniquity. Same people teach that anyone who stole in the past should restitute, but when it comes to elections—rigging and ballot-box snatching do not mean anything. It is heartbreaking how we change the goal-post while the game is still on.In Nigeria, after rigging and winning elections, our people would go to both mosques and churches for thanksgiving. No wonder religious people are fast losing their young ones in droves. The young ones are beginning to dislike religion as an effect of the kind of hypocrisy they daily see amongst those of us who are neck-deep in the dirty-water of religion. When we rig an election and win, the one who should be thanked is the devil, not God! Taking this crucial issue a

little further, folks believe that every government represents God forever! They believe that a government cannot cease to represent God. They do not know that a government can start with God and later leave Him. Also, a government can be from God and later God would leave it, when it begins to become a terror unto good works. When a government begins to romance evil, it ceases to be of God. And submitting to a government that is evil makes one anti-God. What I am addressing right now is not limited to Nigeria. I am actually addressing the whole continent of Africa. The question now is; what happens when a government ceases to represent God in Africa? Is it proper to be praying for long life and wisdom for governments that are no longer of God? Is it proper to be subject to governing authorities that are obviously not from God? Also, is it right to keep (through prayer) in power those who God has removed from power? Believers in Nigeria would have used their powerful prayers to change Nigeria if they are properly taught by their leaders. Believers in Nigeria and Africa as a whole have been praying amiss for centuries, using their prayers to sustain those who are no longer in authority in the “spirit-realm.” If God can open the eyes of many believers to see that those they are praying for are actually not

in power in the spirit-realm, they are going to change how they are currently praying for them. The way I prayed for those in authority radically changed many years ago when I read the story of “Saul and David.” After God had taken the kingdom away from Saul, Saul was still on the throne in the natural for many years, he had stopped being in authority, though! This should let you know that it is possible to be the President of a nation and not be in authority. Beloved Africans, another question is, are the Presidents of all the African countries— that are suffering lack amidst abundance—just merely in their varied seats of power or—still in authority? Remember, it is possible to be in a State House and not be in authority, because authority is only from God and He gives it only to those who aren’t a terror to good works! This is where I am coming: When a political leader starts being a terror to good works, he should be prayed out of power. Praying for political leaders, who daily romance evil on this continent is compromise and prayerlessness, but when political leaders are not a terror to good works, they should be prayed for. Praying to God to sustain those who are keeping Africa in poverty amidst abundance is praying amiss. And this is what Christians have been doing in Nigeria and Africa as a whole.

Editorial Commentary PENCIL’S CORNER with

Visiting Daddy It weighed heavy on my heart to visit Daddy today. I will be leaving back to my humble abode soon, so I need to spend as much time as I can with him. Mom made me promise that I will never leave him. I may be in far away New York, but I have never left him. Video calls have come in handy as well as the weekly seed I send to him. It breaks my heart that daddy is now a widower, and to make matters worse, he is retired. He has refused to marry again. He always says,” I did it once and that was it. He stares at mom’s picture every day. Soon he will be with me in New York, but for now he still has unfinished business in Nigeria, so we take it in stride. My desire to hug daddy today was so strong, that as tired as I was, I dragged myself to his house. When I got there, he’s caregiver called to tell me that they were out taking a walk. I walked towards their direction. As soon as he saw me, we gave each other a tight hug, one would have thought it was the last we would

ever see each other. He uttered, “I love you baby. You are my life “. He usually cries when he makes this statement, but he was stronger today and obviously happy. He told me that he cried earlier missing mom, and told me how eager he is to visit her grave. It must really be painful to have lived with someone for 44 years, to suddenly living alone, in your old age. That must be a scary reality. I obeyed the urge to take a ride to visit dad today. He was like a child. He was so excited. We sat down in his parlor watching movies, as he kept saying, “I love you baby.” I made sure his blood pressure was taken before I left and I gave him over 15 kisses. He eventually said, “It’s enough”. I am in my mid 30’s but I will forever be a daddy’s girl. This is my time to give him back all that he gave me. Not necessarily money, but love and affection. It is a parent’s love that sees a child through. It is my love that will see Daddy through. #OMENESA

My Hair I came to Nigeria to shoot a Nollywood movie, and attempted to take out my braids. While the lady was loosening it, I kept telling her to take it easy. She kept yanking and pulling. Her son came to assist her, and he did worse than she did. I couldn’t believe how tough they were with my strands. My surprise was how I was so protective of my hair. Once upon a time, I didn’t have enough self love to take care of the temple that God lives in, which is my body. I was so reckless, and I would have cuts almost every day, from my arms to my foot to picking pimples off my face. I didn’t have tenderness for my body. Because I have been practicing self love lately, I was able to notice that my hair was not being pampered with love. It was being mishandled. My ability to notice this was truly a miracle. The hair on our head, the complexion of our skin and the limbs and bones we have, should all be handled with care. We are to caress the skin we were given. We are to take care of ourselves, not only because God

lives in us, but because we are the light of the world. Light must shine right? Right! So these days, I don’t allow the hair dresser comb my hair, I comb it myself. I grease it with rich oils. I wrap it in a silk scarf at night. I weave and twist it with jealousy. I am fully aware that it is a blessing to have hair, and I seldom use extensions. The same goes for my skin. Only nature goes on it. No chemicals. I am very particular about who and what I allow into my space. The same way people protect their homes and may not even allow you come visit, is the same way I try my best to choose who will braid my hair. Now this is not from the stand point of a juju or witch doctor touching my scalp for sacrifice. Nah! I have just found that it is wise to test the spirits that you allow in your space. Your space will include you home, your emotions, and yes your hair, even your masseuse. Don’t you know that God lives on the inside of you? Selah! #OMENESA

OUR POSITION Curbing HIV/AIDS menace in Nigeria The Human Immune-deficiency Virus (HIV) and Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) has remained a global challenge for which there is no cure. In the three decades since the epidemic reached its height, 39 million people have died while 35 million people are living with the virus worldwide. Most of the dead and infected are in subSaharan Africa or other low- and middle-income countries of the world. The social stigma remains, but medical advances have allowed people with the disease to live longer, healthier lives. The first case of HIV/AIDS in Nigeria was reported in 1986. Since then, the number of people living with HIV or AIDS (PLWHA) has steadily increased with the epidemic moving into a ‘generalized’ state. Data made available during the 2018 World AIDS Day had indicated that about 9.4 million were counselled and tested as regards HIV/AIDS in 2017, out of which 4.98 million were female and 4.031 male. It added that 239,542 persons tested positive (136,987 female and 102,555 male). The report further revealed that only 18 percent of people living with HIV/AIDS in Nigeria are aware of their status, an indication that there is still a 52 percent gap in advocacy. The HIV epidemic has further weakened and threatened to overwhelm the Nigerian health care system, increased the number of orphans and increased the cost of achieving set developmental goals by decreasing the size of the workforce, mainly adults in their most productive years of life (15-60 years). The high manpower-intensive sectors of the economy are mostly affected including the agricultural, educational and health sectors as well as the rural economy. In summary, the impact of HIV/AIDS on Nigeria’s social fabric and on its economic development and well-being continue to be pervasive and, unless controlled, will continue to undermine the quality of life of Nigerians. There is high commitment to fight HIV/AIDS in Nigeria, as evidenced by the initiation of the Presidential Council on AIDS, the National AIDS/ STD Control Programme (NASCP), and the National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA) which is a multi-sectoral agency including members from many government ministries and civil society. At the state level, State Action Committees on AIDS (SACA) have been established, while at the local level there are Local Action Committees on AIDS (LACA). The mission of NACA is to provide an enabling policy environment and a stable ongoing facilitation of proactive multi-sectoral planning, coordinated implementation, monitoring and evaluation of all HIV/AIDS prevention and impact mitigation activities in Nigeria. Unfortunately, one of the biggest challenges in the HIV response has remained unchanged in the past years. HIV disproportionally affects people in vulnerable populations that are often highly marginalized and stigmatized. Thus, most new HIV infections and deaths are seen in places where certain higher-risk groups remain unaware, underserved or neglected. About 75% of new HIV infections outside sub-Saharan Africa are in men who have sex with men, people who inject drugs, people in prisons, sex workers, or transgender people, or the sexual partners of these individuals. These are groups who are often discriminated against and excluded from health services. The universal goal of HIV prevention and control is to reduce new infections to zero by 2030, but worries remain about gaps in the number of people receiving treatment in Nigeria. With a population of about 9.4 million People Living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA), an equivalent

to 10 percent of the global HIV burden, only an estimated 1,093,233 are on treatment. Several hundreds of others that qualify for treatment are left out. In 2013, 22 percent or 51,000 of all new child HIV infections that occurred globally were recorded in Nigeria and findings also show that the nation is not progressing as expected with its Prevention of Mother-To-Child Transmission of HIV or PMTCT programme because thousands of HIV positive pregnant women that are not on treatment still transmit the virus to their babies during or after birth. Nigerians appear to be resting on their oars with the false perception that HIV/AIDS no longer poses danger to our society. We must therefore re-jig our information strategy to encourage behaviour change for key affected populations and urge all pregnant women to get screened for HIV. We must also invest more on PMTCT. The message about HIV testing should be clear. Even with all the medical advances, it is essential to encourage HIV testing within the populace to ensure everyone knows their HIV status. We must address complaints by people living with HIV/AIDS about dwindling access to treatment and join efforts to get international donors to renew interest in the funding for the eradication of the scourge. Tackling the HIV epidemic with so many people not on treatment would be an exercise in futility. Therefore, the way to go is to ensure antiretroviral treatment is available and accessible for all people living with HIV. Nigeria must also adhere strictly to the recommendation of the World Health Organisation (WHO) that everyone with a diagnosis of HIV should be placed on antiretroviral treatment as soon as possible, irrespective of viral load.

Police to parade suspects in Afuze attack today Short News Titus Akhigbe, Benin Following the marching order to the Edo state Police Command by Governor Godwin Obaseki, to fish out the culprits in the massacre of police officers at Afuze Divisional Police Headquarters, the police will on Monday parade the suspected killers. In a statement by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Communication Strategy, Mr. Crusoe Osagie, the state government said that a proper briefing of the operation that led to the arrest of the suspected killers will be given during the parade. “It is a bit of closure that the police has apprehended some of those suspected to have attacked the police station. Though we hear a good number of the suspects have been apprehended, we hope to get more information when the Edo state Commissioner of Police, Muhammed Danmallam briefs the press tomorrow.” He said that the Governor Godwin Obaseki-led administration is committed to protecting lives and property in the state and would never allow criminals have a free reign in the state. “The state government is committed to the security of Edo people and residents in the state. The incident in Afuze is condemnable and we commiserate with the affected families. We also hope that the speed at which the suspected culprits were arrested will bring some closure to the families, even as we await the full briefing from the police commissioner.” Recall that a gang of criminals attacked

the Afuze Divisional Police Headquarters, in Owan East Local Government Area of Edo state, killing the divisional police officer and three other officers on duty. The governor gave a directive immediately for the killers to be unraveled. In a related development, the Enogie of Ukhiri in lkpoba Okha Local Government Area, Enogie Godwin Aigbe Osayande has been kidnapped by unknown gun men. The heavily armed men numbering

five who stormed his Ukhiri Palace on the Benin-Abraka Road were said to have shot sporadically into the air before abducting him from his living room to an unknown destination. The hoodlums who came in an unregistered car were said to have completely burnt down their own car and left the Enogie’s palace with their victim’s Nissan Sunny car. The Enogie is a retired chief superintendent of police and took over from his late father some years ago.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says the governorship supplementary election scheduled for March 23, would be conducted in 14 local government areas of the state. The state’s Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mr. Kasim Gaidam, disclosed this on Sunday in Yola. Gaidam said the election would be conducted in 29 wards and 44 polling units where over 40, 000 votes were earlier cancelled in the recent governorship election. “The commission had prepared for the supplementary governorship election in the state. The election is going to be conducted in 14 LGs, 29 wards and 44 polling units spread across the state,” Gaidam said. He listed the local areas to include Yola South, Fufore, Ganye, Girei, Guyuk and Hong. Others are Lamurde, Numan,

Madagali, Michika, Mubi North, Shelleng, Song and Toungo Local Government Areas. Gaidam, however, explained that the election was declared inconclusive as provided by law based only on official registered voters, not permanent voters’ cards collected or the number of accredited voters. He said that “other figures being circulated should be disregarded as only the report released by the returning officer should be considered.” It could be recalled that the results of the governorship election announced by the INEC Returning Officer, Prof. Andrew Haruna shows that the PDP candidate, Ahmadu Fintiri scored 367, 472 votes, while a total of 334, 995 votes was scored by incumbent Governor Muhammad Bindow, who is the APC candidate. The margin between them was 32,476 votes.

Reps c’ttee summons Bank executives over N630m loan Henry Omunu, Abuja The House of Representatives Committee on Public Petitions has summoned the management of First Bank over a petition accusing the bank of using forged documents to seal a private school, Whiteplains British School over a N630 million loan obtained by the institution from the bank. Top executives of the bank are expected to appear before the House committee on Thursday. The summons is sequel to a petition dated November 26, 2018 and signed by the school’s Administrator, Dr. Francis Nwufoh, alleging that the bank used forged documents to seal the school over a loan that is yet to expire. Our correspondent recalls that the investigative hearing was stalled last week Tuesday, following the suspension of legislative activies in honour of the late Rep. Temitope Olatoye, who died the previous Saturday. In the petition, the school alleged that the bank unilaterally sealed off its premises over a N630 million loan scheduled to expire on June 12, 2019. The petitioners asked the committee to address why First Bank filed a suit just to claim and take over the school without establishing any monetary debt claim it has against the school. Also, the school alleged that First Bank acted in contempt of a court judgment before sealing the school The school further denied entering into any tripartite legal mortgage as is been claimed by the bank in respect of the loan repayment, adding that the said agreement between First Bank Plc, Whiteplains British School and France Lee Nigeria Limited, the self-styled guarantor is fake.

PRP candidate concedes defeat, shifts attention to youth empowerment

The Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) candidate for the Kaduna state House of Assembly, Alhaji Fahad Ahmed-Chikaji on Sunday conceded defeat and congratulated the winner of the election, Aminu Shagali, the current speaker of the assembly. Fahad-Chikaji, who contested in the election to represent Sabongari constituency, stated this in an interview in Zaria. He said the decision to accept defeat was informed by his desire to exhibit the spirit of sportsmanship and for peace to prevail. “I want to use this medium to first of all thank my creator; there is no one worthy of adoration except Allah (SWT) who is the supreme architect of the universe and earth. “He knows what is best for me and the people of Sabongari. Therefore, my humble self, my family and my campaign team have decided to uphold the outcome of the just concluded state assembly election. “May God Almighty make it the best for the

people of Sabongari in particular and Kaduna state at large. Therefore, I wish to congratulate the winner and Speaker, Kaduna state House of Assembly, Aminu Abdullahi Shagali for the victory.” Fahad-Chikaji said now that the election was over, he would focus on youth empowerment. “Now that the election is over, I will continue with my normal business of youth empowerment, training, sensitization and enlightenment on drug abuse and other social vices. “I want a situation where our youths will be trained in different skills to enable them become employers of labour instead of waiting for white collar jobs, which is very rare to come by,” he noted. The PRP candidate appreciated the entire people of the constituency for their resilience, determination, courage and their coming out en masse to exercise their franchise and urged them to sustain the tempo.

Don urges Sanwo-Olu to stick to Lagos master plan

A lecturer at the University of Lagos, Aaron Akinloye, has advised Lagos state Governor-elect, Babajide Sanwo-Olu to stick to projects in the initial master plan of the state. Akinloye, who gave the advice in an interview in Lagos on Sunday, said the state has continued to work on its master plan since 1999. “The state remains a good example when it comes to infrastructure development. My expectation from the incoming administration is that it should continue with the ongoing developments in infrastructure, tourism, politics, transportation and the environment. “They should also continue with the housing projects, health care centres and most importantly, educational and other developmental projects already contained in the master plan,’’ he said.

The university don, who also spoke on the March 9 governorship and state Houses of Assembly elections said that the elections were free and fair. “I was the returning officer in Epe Local Government during the elections and the elections were considered to be free and fair. “Our electorate have begun to understand and abide by democratic rules. Democracy is a process and not a destination, therefore, our democracy must continue to thrive in spite of the numerous challenges,” he said. The lecturer congratulated the governorelect and his deputy, adding that the state may collapse if its master plan was disrupted. “Lagos state is still known to be a mega and peaceful city because of the solid foundation and structure built since 1999. Lagos may collapse if someone disrupt the structure and change the master plan,” he said.

PDP heads to tribunal in Ekiti, picks holes in poll results Gbenga Sodeinde, Ado Ekiti

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ekiti state has picked holes in the outcome of the general elections conducted in the state. The PDP which described the elections as a charade which defied all decent, civilized and acceptable approaches to democracy vowed to go to tribunal. PDP state Chairman, Chief Gboyega Oguntuwase, said the Presidential, National Assembly and House of Assembly elections in the state were characterized with violence, ballot-snatching, ballot stuffing and vote-buying allegedly perpetrated by the All Progressives Congress (APC) members to win all available legislative

seats in the state. Oguntuwase, who spoke in Ado Ekiti on Sunday while reviewing the elections, said that the party has resolved not to allow the rape of democracy go unchallenged, hence the resolve to approach the judiciary as the only democratic process available. He said that “we have given all our candidates in the National Assembly elections the go-ahead to pursue the cases against the elections at the tribunal because if the broad daylight robbery against democratic attitudes go unchallenged, it is going to consume the nation and our democratic norms and process. “The general elections in Ekiti state were bedeviled by violence, ballot snatching, threat to lives, threat to properties and the

entire state was riddled with uncivilized attitude to politics.” The PDP chairman who hinged the resolve to challenge the National Assembly elections on the party’s commitment to purifying the system, however, did not disclose the team of lawyers being lined up by the party for the legal battle for tactical reasons. Although, Oguntuwase accused the APC of all known electoral offences in the House of Assembly election, he said that “we might not have the capacity for litigation here, but we are not foreclosing the possibility. But, I can tell you categorically that our national Assembly candidates will challenge the uncivilized approach of APC to democracy.”

Vote buying, albatross to Nigeria’s electoral process - Archbishop Umoren Tunde Opalana, Abuja The Auxiliary Archbishop of the Catholic Archdiocese of Abuja, Most Rev. Anslem Umoren has bemoaned the dangerous trend of vote buying in Nigeria’s electoral process. He expressed doubts in the future of the country’s democracy if politicians should continue indulging in buying the voting rights of unsuspecting voters, just as he took a swipe on Nigerians who sell their votes for a token and threby mortgaging their future and that of unborn generation. Addressing the press in Abuja on Sunday during the 2019 feast day celebration of Saint Patrick Edo/Delta Catholic Community hosted by St. Kevin’s Catholic Church, Jikwoyi, Most Rev. Umoren also advised INEC to be better prepared for the conduct of elections to avoid the pitfalls witnessed in the recent exercise. He said that “I am not INEC. So, I cannot give you a review of the general elections, but maybe, we should prepare a little bit more than what we have done, by trying to change the mentality of Nigerians that we don’t live on short term. “These should be things on the long

term and that should reflect who we elect to represent us. What criteria do we use to elect people because this whole issue we are hearing of people using money to get votes; that is a useless way of living. And if Nigerians want it that way, they should know that they don’t have any future, they are not building a future. “We must get beyond that and think of electing people who have the quality and who have shown it. We don’t just elect people by what they say, but by what they have done before; they have precedence and in that regards we know they can do better. “But, if I have not done nothing before and you elect me, what do you expect? Whatever I do is what I can do. So, we need to go be beyond this childish way of living and acting and begin to take responsibility for our lives and the lives of our children.” The Catholic archbishop stressed that people must vote for whoever can provide them good representation rather than for a candidate they would be forced to put up with for another four years no matter how bad he/she might be. He added that “we don’t have that (supplementary elections) in Abuja, but

wherever they have, we call on people to go out and vote for whoever they want to represent them. “At the end of the day, whatever decision you make is what you will leave with in the next four years. So, people must make sure that whoever they will be comfortable with are the ones they elect.” On the celebration of the feast of St. Patrick, Archbishop Umoren explained that St. Patrick was an important figure in the church, an epitome of how Christians should love their neighbors, including those who hate them. He added that “that is the trademark of Christianity. It is not just to love those who love us. And Jesus said that if you do that, there is no difference between you and pagans because even the pagans do as much of that. They care for those who care for them. You give something and I give to you. “But, for Christians we must go beyond that to love who we sometimes have the perception that they do not love us. Even if it is a reality that they do not love us, we are still called to love them because God loves us even though we still fall in things that we should not. So Saint Patrick is an example in that regards.”

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Sunday said that it has fixed the only constituency poll for the Ekiti state House of Assembly that was not concluded on March 9 to March 23. INEC’s Administrative Secretary in the state, Dr. Muslim Omoleke, who also doubles as the commission’s acting resident electoral commissioner announced the new date in Ado Ekiti. He asked political parties that would be participating in the supplementary election to get ready, assuring the parties that the commission would not deviate from the tradition of neutrality and fairness in the forthcoming supplementary election. He said that the election would hold in five polling units in the constituency area, in line with the directive from the INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu. Omoleke said that INEC would meet with the security agencies during the week and brief them on the need to be well prepared for the conduct of the supplementary election.

Red Cross begins campaign for Lagos building survivors

The Nigerian Red Cross Society (NRCS) says it has commenced ‘Back to school’ campaign for the survivors of the collapsed building in Lagos Island. Secretary of the Lagos office of Red Cross, Mr. Olakunle Lasisi, disclosed this in an interview on Sunday in Lagos, declaring that the project would help the survivors, particularly the students overcome the trauma. According to Lasisi, the branch decided to embark on the project after concluding its need assessment for the survivors. “We’ve been able to reach out to the people affected and we’re trying to help them recover. One of the things they need to do is to go back to school. “If they keep waiting at home, they will still be dealing with the trauma but if they’re sent back to school immediately, it will ease some of their burdens,” he explained. The secretary further explained that the society was carrying out psychosocial support for the victims through visits, counselling and provision of relief materials. He pledged the continued support of the Red Cross to the victims, as much as it can, adding that “for those who were residents of the building, we’re looking at relief materials, if possible because it’s very important, they need to get accommodation.” Lasisi disclosed that one of the survivors of the collapsed building, who lived at the penthouse of the building, had been transferred to another hospital for increased medical support.

No nation can grow with election rigging - Obi Short News Says it’s the worst form of vice in society

Tunde Opalana, Abuja Vice Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the February 23 Presidential election, Mr. Peter Obi has decried the rigging recorded in the general elections, saying that no nation can grow when elected leaders come into office through crooked means. Obi said that the process through which people come into office is far more important than what they do thereafter and that forms the basis of their integrity. He asserted that election rigging is the worst form of vices and indeed,

the root of corruption as it goes to impact negatively on the political and economic growth of the country. According to a press statement from his media office, Obi noted that the fraud that characterized this year’s election has greatly undermined the country’s democracy, its future and has significantly damaged the ongoing fight against all vices and tainted the integrity of those responsible. He said that Nigeria cannot quantify the enormity of damage the electoral fraud has done to the psyche of the country, describing such negative acts like “election manipulation as the real reason why this country is not growing and has been unable to tackle

the existing myriads of problems like unemployment and its attendant vices. “The only thing rigging does to a country is that it continues to keep incompetent people in office and as a result rather than put energy in creating jobs to engage its teeming youths, it instead channels it trying to contain all sorts of vices and brigandage.” He also lamented the further effects of election rigging which encourages incompetent people to hang onto office and cause more harm to the society. Obi remarked that his main concern and worry is how to create jobs and engage millions of Nigerian youth roaming the streets doing nothing at their prime productive ages.

Rivers to investigate killing of PDP agent at Khana by FSARS Amaka Agbu, Port Harcourt

Governor of Rivers state, Nyesom Wike, has announced the setting up of a judicial commission of inquiry to ensure that the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad (F-SARS) personnel who he accused of killing the Peoples Democratic (PDP) collation agent at Khana, Dr. Ferry Gberegbe were brought to justice. The governor also announced a N200 million scholarship for the four children of the late Dr. Gberegbe, directing the widow of the deceased to open a bank account for each of the four children. He spoke during the weekend in Port Harcourt when he led some leaders of Rivers state on a condolence visit to the family of the slain lecturer. “We will set up a judicial commission of inquiry to ensure that the culprits are brought to justice. It is unfortunate that F-SARS killed the PDP collation agent. “The state government will offer scholarship to the four young children left behind by the deceased. The mother of the children should open dedicated accounts for each of the children. The state

government will pay N50 million to each of the four children for their education,” Governor Wike said. The governor decried the shooting of the late lecturer at the Khana collation centre, where he served as the PDP agent, adding that “it is most unfortunate that the young man was shot dead by F-SARs led by Akin Fakorede in an attempt to cart away election results. “Instead of us to allow people to choose who will represent and govern them, the security agencies will not allow that. Rather they prefer to kill us. He died in the course of defending the PDP. “He died in the course of defending democracy. I want to assure the family that all those who killed him will not go free.” Governor Wike said the late Dr. Gberegbe remained committed to the PDP even on his sick-bed. He said the deceased sent him a text message saying that he would be very happy when Governor Wike was declared winner of the election. He stated further that the state government would also construct a house for the family of late Dr. Gberegbe and participate in his burial.

Also speaking, the PDP National Chairman, Prince Uche Secondus, said the late lecturer “was a victim of the calculated oppression of the oil rich state by the army and the F-SARs.” He said that the country was in distress, noting that the nation was sitting on the keg of gun powder in view of the negative activities of the federal government. “The commander of F-SARs, Akin Fakorede will kill several people and he cannot be transferred or disciplined. The police and army have become politicians, always responding to politicians,” he added. Widow of the deceased, Mrs. Funke Gberegbe, said that the family was yet to fully celebrate the doctorate degree bagged by husband before he was brutally murdered by F-SARs operatives at the collation centre. She said that her late husband was the pillar of the family whose sudden death would negatively impact their lives. Father of the deceased, Mr. Conduct Gberegbe, said he “was shocked by the killing of his son by F-SARs operatives.” The retired police officer described the late academic as his hope and future.

Expert decries poor creativity amongst advert practitioners Godwin Anyebe, Lagos

The Chairman Troyka Holdings Limited, Mr. Biodun Shobanjo, has decried the abysmal performance and poor level of creativity amongst advertising practitioners in the country. Shobanjo, who disclosed this recently in Lagos, said that what is currently trending amongst practitioners in the industry is the issue of copycats. According to him, the evolution of digital technology in the 21st century has further introduced a sense of laxity on the part of the professionals. “In my generation, you will always see a creative director with a pen and a paper going through the rigour to think out a concept. But, what do we have now? We have advert practitioners that are in a hurry to come up with a concept. “They don’t think deep enough in coming up with a concept and it has adversely affected the level of creativity in the industry. Creativity has been compromised; the element of copy and paste in addition to digitalization has further introduced a sense of laziness amongst practitioners. “I think the ability to think through a concept creatively is what is presently lacking amongst practitioners in the industry. Advert professionals these days don’t think deeply,” he stated.

National carrier will end multiple designations to foreign airlines in Nigeria - Engr Animashaun Chukwuemeke Iwelunmo The floating of a new national carrier by the Federal Government will eventually lead to the cessation of multiple entries into and out of Nigeria’s airspace by foreign airlines. This was the view of a former Director of Medview Airline, Engineer Lookman Animashaun while speaking the suspended Nigeria Air project. He strongly believed that lack of a very strong national carrier or flag carrier to compete with foreign airlines by offering reciprocal flights services to countries of these airlines that gave them the privilege of operating into more than one entry and exit point in Nigeria. He asked:” Which of the Nigerian airlines were given multiple entries and exit points when they were operating into London, New York, Amsterdam, Paris and Dubai? None. Not even Nigeria Airways when it was in full operation” Animashaun opined that once the new national airline is established with strong airline fleet and start operating into and out of the four international airports of Lagos, Kano, Port Harcourt and Abuja, with competitive airfares and good in-flight services, many of the foreign airlines will automatically exit themselves from operating multiple entries and exit points in Nigeria. He said presently, “there is no privately owned Nigerian scheduled carrier can flex muscle with the foreign airlines in terms of fleet and quality of services. As I speak to you, none of Nigeria registered carriers that earlier ventured into international routes of London, New York or Dubai are flying into those routes again.” Engineer Animashaun, however, admonished government to jettison the idea of engaging expatriates in the establishment of Nigeria Air when the temporary suspension is lifted, rather, it should make use of Nigerian aviation professionals cum consultants at a very minimal cost rather than foreigners who would charge very huge amount of ‘hard’ currency. The national carrier, he further advised should be established in such a way that within a short period of operations, it should be allowed to go public and be listed in stock exchange to allow Nigerians, both private and corporate entities invest in it. On the recent advise to foreign airlines by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria(FAAN), to consider using Port Harcourt, Abuja and Kano international airports due to congestion at Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, Engineer Animashaun noted that MMIA presently “ is not at all congested by any operational standard. How many flights or passengers do the terminal handle or processed daily compared with other international airports of repute?

FG clarifies delay in Lagos-Ibadan rail project Temitope Adebayo The Honourable Minister of Transportation, Rt. Hon. Rotimi Amaechi, has explained that the Lagos-Ibadan rail project was slowed down, due to officials of the project contractor, the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) who left the country ahead of the general elections in Nigeria. The Minister, during the inspection of the ongoing project, also pointed out that the gaps have been noticed on the project, and is being worked on by the contractor.

According to the Minister, “I was not aware of this until now. They just told me that they usually travel if there is an election in any country that they are working in. “On gaps noticed, there are places the contractor ought to have completed the civil works before the rains arrive. They have promised that before we come back on the 28th of March, they would have completed the civil works. “We are pushing so that by the time we come back, they should have reached d kilometre 95 in terms of track laying. We hope that by the first or second week in April, we should be very close to Ibadan.

“They are currently at kilometre 82 of track laying and have promised to be at kilometre 95 when we come back, I think that should be commended. What we have now are just gaps, that is coming to Ibadan around kilometre 136. By the time the rain starts, we expect them to have finished with the civil works.” On adjustment in the total figure, Amaechi explained that the construction of bigger stations in Apapa, Ebute-Metta, Abeokuta and Ibadan has greatly altered the contract amount for the project. “There are many things we didn’t foresee when we started this project but have now

encountered, like the demolition of the military barracks, construction of bigger stations in Apapa, Ebute-Metta, Abeokuta and Ibadan. All these have greatly altered the contract amount,” the Minister stated. On the stoppage of the free train ride from Iju to Abeokuta, the Minister alluded that to CCECC officials having to leave Nigeria ahead of the elections. “The free train ride which is meant to run for three months was stopped because CCECC officials left the country prior to the elections. Now that they are back, I will direct that they resume the free train ride” the Minister added.

We recorded a 48 percent year-on-year growth in retail deposits and improved our CASA ratio to 77 per cent, optimizing our funding mix, which will enhance our net interest margin (NIM), over the medium term,” Uzoka said. Uzoka remained confident that the Bank’s performance would be even stronger in the years ahead and shareholders would enjoy even greater dividends, as the Group is well positioned to take advantage of imminent fiscal reforms across many economies in Africa, a positive outlook which should stimulate new opportunities in infrastructure, manufacturing, agriculture and resource sectors.

paste in addition to digitalization has further introduced a sense of laziness amongst practitioners” He continued, “I think the ability to think through a concept creatively is what is presently lacking amongst practitioners in the industry. Ad professionals these days don’t think deeply” According to the Chairman, Troyka Holdings, another major reason why creativity has dropped greatly in the industry was because the place of training and tutelage has been overlooked by the

present generation of ad practitioners. He affirmed that in his days, training and apprenticeship was very sacrosanct and practitioners then were disciplined enough to go through tutelage. “How can the industry improve creativity when we presently have practitioners who are not ready to go through tutelage? Practitioners were very discipline and ready to learn in my generation but now, everybody thinks that once you hold a phone or computer they can just come up with creative concepts; that is wrong”

Indian energy firm invests in Nigeria’s power sector Feedback Energy Distribution Company (FEDCO), an Indian-based technology firm, says it has launched an indigenous hightech Information Technology (IT) solutions system in Nigeria. Dilip Kumar, its Chief Projects Officer, announced the company’s entry into the nation’s power sector in a statement made available to the newsmen over the weekend. He said that FEDCO had partnered the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution

Company (PHED) with a focus to tackling operational requirements in the nation’s electricity distribution sector. “FEDCO has prioritised adoption of information technology solutions to modernise, integrate and secure its systems with a view to serving customers cheaper, continuous and reliable power. “The company achieved this through the successful launch of it’s indigenously developer IT solutions in the form of DL

Enhance. Kumar added that the technology would assist PHED to drastically reduce its delivery time as well as improve the quality of its services to customers. According to him, the system will be managed and upgraded by a joint team of domestic and international experts from both companies. FEDCO is a global player in IT based energy solutions and is currently the leading supplier of electricity in India.

Ecobank Group subsidiary fault forfeiture claim on Airtel shares Temitope Adebayo O&O Networks Limited, a subsidiary of Ecobank Group, has faulted certain media reports, says there is no forfeiture order of the Federal High Court of Nigeria in its proceedings that is directed against Ecobank Nigeria Limited. O&O Networks Limited is a special purpose vehicle owned by Ecobank Group, and it defending long-standing proceedings in the Federal High Court relating to its ownership of shares in Airtel Networks Limited that were once owned by it. The company which was previously owned by Oceanic Bank, formed part of Ecobank Transnational Incorporated’s (ETI) in 2011 after the acquisition of Oceanic Bank. Legal proceedings were first initiated against O&O Networks Ltd in December 2006 by Broad Communications Ltd (“plaintiff”), in the Federal High Court of Nigeria. A statement released by O&O Networks, pointed out that there is no forfeiture order of the Federal High Court of Nigeria in these proceedings that is directed against ETI or Ecobank Nigeria Limited. According to the statement, there have been no material legal developments in the plaintiff’s substantive claim for monetary compensation since 2017, though a trial date on the substantive merits was recently fixed for May 28, 2019. The statement reads: “Contrary to certain press reports, there is no forfeiture order of the Federal High Court of Nigeria in these proceedings that is directed against ETI or Ecobank Nigeria Limited, and neither ETI nor Ecobank Nigeria Limited has made or is required by law to make any payment to the Federal High Court of Nigeria in relation to this long-standing litigation. There have been no material legal developments in the plaintiff’s substantive claim for monetary compensation since 2017. “In 2006, the plaintiff’s claim was grounded on an alleged right of first refusal over shares in Airtel Networks Limited that O&O Networks owned. The plaintiff claimed ownership of the Airtel shares based on its right of first refusal. In 2017, the plaintiff amended its claim to seek monetary compensation of USD equivalent of Naira 10 billion (approximately US$28 million) in place of its claim of ownership of the Airtel share. “Since the matter was filed in 2006, it has not proceeded to trial on the substantive merits of the claim to date though a trial date on the substantive merits was recently fixed for May 28, 2019 “In August 2018, O & O Networks sold its shares in Airtel Networks Limited for Naira 22.5 billion (approximately US$62.5 million) with the permission of the Federal High Court on 7 June 2018 and subsequently in September 2018, the plaintiff filed an interlocutory application requesting the Federal High Court of Nigeria to grant an order directing O&O Networks to place Naira 22.5 billion (approximately US$62 million) - the entire proceeds of the sale of the Airtel shares and an amount which is significantly in excess of the plaintiff’s total monetary claim - into an escrow account in the name of the Chief Registrar of the court, pending the final determination of the substantive claim. The Federal High Court of Nigeria granted the plaintiff’s interlocutory application on 7 March, 2019. “O&O Networks has filed a notice of appeal and an application for stay of execution to this ruling. O&O Network’s appeal to the interlocutory order is currently pending, and it intends to prosecute the appeal vigorously. “O & O Networks Limited believes the substantive claim of the plaintiff is without merit and will continue to vigorously defend all proceedings – interlocutory and substantive – in relation to the plaintiff’s long-standing claim.”

Oyo Speakership: Ibarapa youths canvass support for Ogundoyin in 9th Assembly Stories by Patrick Okohue The Ibarapa Youths’ Vanguard has appealed to all newly elected members into the Oyo State House of Assembly to zone it’s speakership position to Ibarapa region. The Youths in ‎a statement signed by its Coordinator, Ojebola Opeoluwa Matthew and its General Secretary, Ogunjimi Sunday also called on ‎stakeholders in Oyo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to reward the zone for its massive support with the Speakership position, saying the zone has been committed to the PDP since 1999. The group said its current member who was re-elected, Hon Adebo Ogundoyin representing Ibarapa East Local Government has the leadership qualities for a vibrant legislative arm in the state. “Adebo Ogundoyin is the only returning PDP member in the state legislative chamber and it is

not only appropriate to support his emergence as the Speaker of the 9th Assembly, but to also make our state set the pace of a new generation of leaders by having the youngest Speaker in the history of Nigeria. ”Politically, Oyo State has always set pace for good things in the Nigeria, the era of the Late Sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo can attest to this fact. Today with the clamour for a new set of young leaders, we are extremely confident that Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin would raise the bar of quality representation of the people,” Ojebola said. The group is also seeking the support of the Governor-elect, Mr. Seyi Makinde and all stakeholders in the state for the only PDP returning member, Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin representing Ibarapa East constituency. According to the statement, aside this going to be a reward for the overwhelming support and loyalty given to PDP in Ibarapaland, it will also be a record breaking achievement having the first

young speaker in Nigeria, as the pace setter state. “We are not in doubt of our son (Adebo Ogundoyin) capability and credibility to lead the Oyo State 9th house of Assembly, because we are proud of what he has done so far despite joining the 8th Assembly barely eight months ago. “We believe his political records can also speak for him, as the only PDP Assembly member in the state in this outgoing dispensation, he did not only deliver his ward and local government to PDP and Governor-elect, Seyi Makinde, he equally delivered the zone, this is a testament of how connected he is with his people,” the statement added. The group noted that zoning the speakership seat to Ibarapaland will make the ruling party in the state stronger for rewarding loyalty and hardwork, adding that they can also guarantee a cordial and progressive relationship between the house under Debo Ogundoyin and the executive, under SEyi Makinde.

Negative effects of 2019 elections will take many years to erase and correct – Yerima The South East Coalition for Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Bauchi State chapter, has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to declare the PDP candidate, Senator Bala Mohammed as the winner of the March 9 governorship election in the state. The election was declared inconclusive by the returning officer for the state, Mohammed Kyari, after ordering for the cancellation of results from Tafawa Balewa following violence that reportedly disrupted results collation at the centre in the local government. INEC fixed March 23 for a rerun in Tafawa Balewa and other polling units in the state where votes were canceled as a result of alleged over voting and other electoral malpractices. But a fact-finding committee set up by INEC headquarters in Abuja, led by Festus Okoye which visited the state reversed the cancellation of the Tafawa Balewa results, recommending that the results of the contentious local government be regenerated, collated and announced on Tuesday, March 19. Speaking on the development, Chairman of the South East PDP coalition, Chief Emeka Aneke Ekwueme, urged INEC to immediately declare Bala Mohammed of the PDP the winner of the election after the results collated from the local government areas in the state showed that he was leading. Ekwueme made the call in a press release made available to newsmen at the weekend, saying that the coalition is a political organisation with its aims and

objectives well spelt out and does not interfere in the activities of ethnic associations. According to Chief Ekwueme, “since there was no breach and violation of the Electoral Act or any law of the land at the Tafawa Balewa collation, victory should be given to the PDP candidate without any waste of time because the candidate with the highest number of votes is the candidate of the PDP, Bala Mohammed (Kauran Bauchi).” Chief Ekwueme said that it is God that gives power and in the governorship election that held in the state, “God has given the PDP governorship candidate, Senator Bala Mohammed, power and this

should be accepted by all Godfearing individuals and groups.” He said: “We are appealing to all Nigerians and all stakeholders in the Bauchi Project and we call on President Muhammadu Buhari and the INEC Chairman, Professor Yakubu Mahmood to direct the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) to declare Senator Bala Mohammed the winner since he scored the highest number of votes in the said election.” According to the chairman of the group, declaring Bala Mohammed the winner of the election will give the people of Bauchi State the ample opportunity to enjoy their chosen leader.

A group, Concern Taraba Citizens Forum has reiterated its earlier stance that the post election violence that trailed the re-election of Governor Darius Ishaku was caused by members and supporters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Reacting to the statement by the Commissioner for Information, Simon Dogari, on Friday accusing the main opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) of killing innocent people in the state after Ishaku was returned as the Governor-elect, the group said the state government should take responsibilities for the violence. The group in a statement signed by its Coordinators Kefas Bulus and Muhammad Umar decried the allegations by the ruling party as irresponsible and desperate attempts to cover its track, saying the PDP introduced religion politics to the state in 2015 and had vigorously sustained it till recent election. The group berated the state government for accusing the APC of encouraging religious politics in the state, saying it was not only disheartening, double standard, but also ludicrous. “The PDP in Taraba State have being siding with religious organisations and some occasions religious organisations do come out openly to tell the world that, they are in support of its Governorship candidate, even the PDP Government is 98% one religion which is a deliberate annihilation of other faiths in the state.” The group alleged that the crises witnessed in Jalingo started on the eve of election by PDP thugs sharing money. “On Friday, 9th 2019 misunderstanding erupted among some PDP thugs who collected election money meant to be shared among them which led to the brutal killing of one person at Jekadafari area of Jalingo. “In a protest against the killing, friends and family of the deceased blindly attacked people,

smashing cars and beating innocent passersby. Incidentally, it was time for Friday prayers and many worshipers became direct victims. It was the quick intervention of Muslim elders and security agents that prevented the situation from falling into religious crisis which was obviously the goal of those who orchestrated the mayhem.” The group added that it was PDP members celebrating Governor Ishaku’s victory at the poll that started attacking APC supporters “When INEC declared Ishaku as Governorelect those who went on celebration were PDP supporters not APC, but instead of doing the traditional rally as APC supporters did in the aftermath of presidential victory, they went on rampage; breaking shops, smashing doors and windows and attacking innocent people along Nasarawo and Mallam Joda areas of Jalingo. “The worst of it all was their blasphemous attack on the faith of the Muslims insinuating that APC was a Muslims party and that a Muslim will never rule Taraba State because Taraba is for Christ and PDP is a Christian’s party. Taraba State belongs to everybody, Nigeria is a seculiar state therefore no religion should claim monopoly of any state in the country.” The group added that the governorship‎ election was never free, fair and credible as the state government has erroneously concluded. “Both international and domestic observers were unanimously agreed in their condemnation of the excessive rigging perpetuated by the PDP in form of vote buying, intimidating of other party agents and forcing INEC officials into compromise by force or by cash. “Also many PDP supporters were caught with hundreds of PVCs and thump printed ballot papers in favour of PDP and some were even paraded by the DSS were they directly admitted to being sponsored by high ranking State Government officials,” the group further alleged.‎

Lobi Stars were knocked out of the CAF Champions League on Saturday despite recording a 2-0 win against Ivorien club ASEC Mimosas at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium. club in the third minute and netted the second three minutes before the hour mark. Alimi finished the competition as Lobi Stars top scorer with five goals. Solomon Ogbeide’s men finished in bottom position in the group with seven points from six games. In the group’s other game, Micheal Babatunde was on for 86 minutes in his Moroccan club

Mohammed Nahiri got the decisive goal for Wydad Casablanca. Mamelodi Sundowns and Wydad Casablanca made it to the quarterfinals from the group.

Rangers out of CAF Confederation Cup as CS Sfaxien stun them 1-0 in Enugu Moses Oyediran, Enugu

Rangers International of Enugu on Sunday was stunned 1-0 at home by Club Sportive Sfaxien of Tunisia and thereby crashed out of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Confederation Cup. Rangers paid for their westfulness in front of the goals when The Nassim Hnid of Sfaxien scored the only goal of the match in the 73rd. Rangers missed a lot of chances in before the interval and continued from where they stop in the second 45th minute. With the result, CS Sfaxien of Tunisia qualified with their neighbour Etoile du Sahel also of Tunisia with 12 and 10 points

respectively. Rangers and Salitas FC of Burkina-Faso crashed out on five and four points respectively as Salitas lost their last match by the same margin to Etoile in Tunisia. Speaking after the match, Rangers gaffer Olugbenga Ogunbote said that his team lost to lack of concentration. ‘’ We have been having upper hand as in an attempt to score and pushed them to their half only to lost concentration from their free kick in which gifted them the victory. ‘’ It is unfortunate that we lost the match and we are going home to do more work as this showed us that we still have slot of work to do. ‘’ Rangers have no other option

at the moment to accept defeat and go back to the league to fight for continental spot. In his words, Sfaxien coach Ruud Krol said that they knew from the beginning of the league that the road to success is difficult and that they have sumounted the group stage. ‘’ Today we play at an astro turf and the temperature is high but I fell happy that we won and qualified to next stage. ‘’ we know that it is going to be difficult and the fact that we won Rangers at home does not mean that the match is not tough. ‘’ Rangers made it tough for us and I am happy that we came, saw and conquer and from here now we are going to work hard for the quarter-final stage.
