include a phone, large sums of money in Dollar denomination as well as expensive gift items which were returned to the owner, a lady who had just arrived Nigeria from the United States of America, on August 18, 2018. The company’s management led by the Group Managing Director, Mr. Wale Olaoye and other directors of the company, singled them out for honour with an early morning ceremonial parade by their colleagues on August 22. Symbolically, the parade of honour was at the MMIA, Lagos. Achi Daniel, a junior guard who was deployed to secure the multi-level car park facility managed by a Halogen client, Aphamead Facilities Management Limited, at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Ikeja-Lagos, found the lost bag and immediately handed the exhibit to his supervisor, Francis Emepueaku, for proper handling and investigation of the incident. His supervisor, thereafter, scrolled through the phone in the lost bag and called one of the bag owner’s contacts that he had found on the phone. “Alas, the contact happened to be the daughter of the owner of the bag, who received the call in America. This legendary display of integrity got the owner surprised,” the company stated.

In his commendation speech, the Group Managing Director, Mr. Wale Olaoye, expressed deep satisfaction at the open display of integrity displayed by the two guards. He observed that they exhibited Halogen Security intrinsic values. ‘’I stand here to convey best wishes from the management and staff of Halogen Security Company Limited to all of you. We are particularly proud of Achi Daniel and Francis Emepueaku for their impressive show of integrity, passion, excellence and respect. “Those are our inestimable values. These two heroes represent who we truly are; the trustworthy partner anyone cannot do without. They are who we are, one of the best brands from Nigeria. I am proud of them’’, he noted with pride. Olaoye encouraged the two guards and their colleagues to see themselves as the potential chief security officer of any multinational company. He added that “Halogen Security has produced many chief security officers of major multinational companies like MTN, Virgin Nigeria and Air Nigeria among others from here in the past. Any of you can rise to that level, I encourage you to aim high’’. Speaking further, he urged them to raise their level of passion and professionalism on the job, as more attention will now be focused on the Halogen

brand because of the positive conduct put up by two guards. ‘ “This should be a source of inspiration and caution for you all as public expectation of the level of your professionalism have risen with this positive development,” he advised. Earlier, in a message to Halogen Security Limited, Dr. Banji Oyegbami, a Lagos based medical practitioner and a family friend of the owner of the lost bag who witnessed the incident, expressed hope that Nigeria will be great again with men of integrity such as are being raised by Halogen Security Company Limited. “I was really surprised at the level of honesty and integrity displayed by Mr. Francis and Mr. Achi Daniel both of Halogen Security and I think they should be commended. There is no doubt, Nigeria is going to be great again with these kind of new breed of professionals ’’, he said. Meanwhile, President Muhammadu Buhari has commended two security men who returned a handbag filled with valuables forgotten at the Murtala Mohammed Airport, Ikeja- Lagos by an American returnee, saying “such conduct reflects the new Nigeria that we all desire.” The President called on Nigerians to emulate their conduct to make the country a reference point for good conducts. Atiku, APC in war-of-words over Buhari’s trekking Tom Okpe, Mathew Dadiya, Abuja

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) are now engaged in war-of-words following Atiku’s criticism of President Muhammadu Buhari walking from the venue of Sallah prayers in Daura, Katsina State on Tuesday to his home as proof of his fitness to re-contest for the presidency in 2019. But the APC spokesman, Yekini Nabena, has faulted the claims of Atiku, saying that the former Vice President is frustrated over his past failures to win presidential election Buhari had on Tuesday shunned protocol and decided to demonstrate his fitness to run for a second term by trekking 800 metres from the

Eid-praying ground in Daura to his private residence. He also acknowledged cheers from residents, who lined up on his route to catch a glimpse of him. Speaking on the matter, the Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to the President, Mallam Garba Shehu, said the action of the president was a positive response to an earlier suggestion by Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal that Buhari was too old to re-contest. Shehu had said: “I think the president has done one thing today – that the issue is not how old one is but how fit he is; how healthy he is. Now the president has proven his fitness and well-being to continue in office is a settled matter. “I think that if people want to campaign against him, they should do so on issues that are of significance to Nigerians. The

President is fit, he is healthy; he is good to go for second term.” The Daily Times recalls that Tambuwal, who is interested in the president’s office, had said last week that Buhari is “too old” to continue to rule the country beyond 2019. According to Tambuwal, who spoke during a solidarity visit of students and youths in Sokoto, last week, the President is just too old to be Nigeria’s leader, despite his integrity and impeccable character. But Atiku in a tweet on Wednesday described the President’s action as pedestrian, noting that walking is not a unique attribute to anyone and should not be used as a measure of fitness. Atiku tweeted thus: “I regularly jog more than a mile & exercise, but it will be pedestrian of me to ask Nigerians to vote for me because of that. I want my party – the PDP, and

14 escape death in Ondo on Sallah day Adewale Momoh, Akure Tragedy was averted on Tuesday, during the Sallah day celebrations in Ore, Odigbo Local Government Area of Ondo State as no fewer than 14 people cheated death. A liquidfied gas laden truck which was said to be enroute Benin on the ever busy Lagos - Benin Expressway fell on a vehicle at the Ore junction area of the road. According to the Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Ondo State Command, Mr Rotimi Adeleye, who confirmed the incident, the truck lost control and fell on a 14-passenger bus parked at a restaurant on Ore-Lagos Expressway in Odigbo Local Government Area of the state when the occupants of the bus had alighted by the road side. He said, “A tanker laden with gas lost control, hits the side of the bridge and fell on a 14-seater passenger bus parked in a restaurant at Ore. “No life was lost, all the passengers in the bus were not inside the vehicle when the crash occurred. “All the passengers has already

alighted from the bus to eat at the eatery when the incident occurred.” The sector commander, who admonished truck drivers to always ensure that stock valve are installed in their articulated vehicles in order to be free from explosion or gas leakage during any crash, maintained that the precautionary measure is the international best practice which prevents explosion and leakage during accidents. “No explosion and gas leakages during the crash. Imagine what would have happened if the truck driver did not install stock valve in his vehicle?” Adeleye added. Meanwhile, the sector command has deployed personnel, 17 operational vehicles, four ambulances and three power bikes in Ondo State to ensure free flow of traffic during the Eid-el-Kabir celebrations. Adeleye emphasised that the deployment was in line with the directive from the FRSC headquarters to ensure that the roads were safe for motorists during the period. He said, “We have started a special operation as directed by the national headquarters for the Eid-elKabir. We started on August 17 and it will end on August 26. “A total of 700 personnel have

been deployed, while we have already deployed 17 operational vehicles, four ambulances and three power bikes for smooth operations during the celebrations,’’ he said. He explained that the command had embarked on the sensitisation programme in all major motor parks in the state, to educate motorists on safety measures and also carried out free eye tests for some selected drivers. “For this celebration, we have embarked on massive motor park rallies to ensure that we educate motorists on how to make the roads safe during the celebrations. “We have also taken steps to ensure that we clear the broken down vehicles and other obstructions on the roads, to ensure free flow of traffic during the period.” The sector commander, who maintained that the command had identified some critical flashpoints in the state, said that mobile courts had also been positioned to try erring traffic violators. “This is the rainy season and a special period. Drivers need to check their wipers, lights, mirrors and the water level of their vehicles, before embarking on their trips,” Adeyeye added.

commend their conduct to the rest of the country.” The President urged Nigerians to bring out the best in themselves at all times, noting that with such minds, they can never be hoodwinked again by those who seek power for selfish and dubious reasons, and return the country to an inglorious past. “Nigeria will no longer be a byword for corruption and plundering of public resources. That is the path we have chosen to take, and our country will eventually get to a new shore,” President Buhari affirmed. A Lagos-based medical doctor, Banji Oyegbami, had met a family returning from America at the

airport on August 18, 2018. In the process of loading their luggage into the car of their host, the handbag of the returnee’s wife fell, unknown to anyone. It was not till 90 minutes later that an officer of Halogen Securities, on duty at the airport, called the couple, to come for the retrieval of the bag. When the bag was eventually collected, the contents, including a handsome amount of American dollars, phone, wrist watch, and other valuables were intact. The grateful couple offered a generous gift, but Messrs Francis Emepueaku and Achi Daniel, declined, saying they were merely doing their duties.

...honours 2 airport guards for integrity Continued from page 3 President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, on Wednesday, stated that Buhari believed that despite the scoffing of a minority number, Nigeria is resolutely on the road to a new dawn. “Honesty remains the best policy. We must exhibit such behaviour in whatever position we find ourselves, whether high or low,” the president submitted. According to him, “The security men could have chosen to behave differently, following the selfserving principle of ‘if you can’t beat them, join them.’ But they have chosen to be examples of good, honest Nigerians. I

Buhari Nigerians, to vote for me because I WORK not because I WALK. I will work to create jobs. I won’t walk to create an illusion.” Atiku, who is a presidential aspirant of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), also attached a photo himself exercising on a treadmill to the tweet to prove his fitness for the prestigious post. When contacted last night, the APC Acting National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Yekini Nabena, told The Daily Times that Atiku’s comment should be ignored on the grounds that he is yet to emerge as the presidential candidate of the PDP. He said: “Ordinarily, we would not have dignified Atiku with a response because he is an aspirant and yet to emerge as presidential aspirant of the PDP.

Atiku “But when you consider the fact that the former Vice President is a serial defector and loser in presidential elections, it becomes apparent that the man is frustrated and will never see anything good in President Buhari. “He should know by now that no amount of his attacks will affect the President’s conscientious efforts to change the country for better. We know that Atiku is on his usual wide goose chase as regards the presidency and we wish him luck in his ongoing efforts. “But we wish to advice him to leave the President alone and concentrate on how he is going to defeat other frontline aspirants in order to clinch the PDP presidential nomination. It is after this development that we will take up issues with him.”

Tax suspension: Group flares Umahi, alleges plot to snatch PVCs Edward Nnachi, Abakaliki

A Non-Governmental organisation, Ebonyi Advocacy for Transparency Initiative (EATI) has dismissed as sheer hypocrisy the decision of the Governor of Ebonyi State, Engr. Chief David Umahi to temporarily suspend collection of all Personal Income Tax and tenement rates in the State. Interim National Coordinator of the group, Comrade Jude Okpor in a press release made in Abakaliki, yesterday and signed by the Interim National Secretary, Comrade Obinna Udenwe and National Publicity Secretary, Charles Otu, called on the government to immediately refund all that has been fraudulently collected from Tax-payers, hence the Governor has declared the actions of most agents of the Internally Generated Revenue Board as crude illegalities. Recall that Gov. Umahi had in a Town Hall meeting at the Pa Oruta Ngele Township stadium, Abakaliki ordered the immediate suspension of all payable taxes and other revenues by traders, shop-owners and landlords in the State following protests of arbitrary actions taken by the tax agents in their operations. He had said his government will henceforth allow only what is mutually agreed between concerned parties and a committee to be set up by the government. However, Mr. Okpor in his statement

countered that such was not enough to cushion the effects of the high and multiple extortions that had been going on in the State in the guise of taxation. According to him, “Since Governor Umahi now claims to be ignorant of the existence of an Act he personally signed, all revenues and taxes collected in the past three years of his administration should therefore be refunded immediately to traders, shop-owners and Landlords. All those involved in the collection should be prosecuted since the Governor claims that such collections were illegal and unknown to him.” The group according to the release said it is giving Governor Umahi only 24 hours to refund all that was taken from tax-payers and apologize. “We give Gov. Umahi 24 hours only to tender an unreserved apology to Ebonyians since he has now suddenly realized that even revenue fees and taxes which were all arbitrarily and outrageously increased by his exco under his watch, sent to EBHA and almost immediately assented into law by his government is now unknown to him”, the statement read. The group while further alleging that there were plans by the PDP-led government in the State to snatch PVCs from unsuspecting members of the public, especially the market women, the group decried the promise of the governor to dole out N150 million to the traders with a condition that they must publicly display their PVCs.

Security men repel gunmen’s attempt to invade Sen Akpabio’s home Attempts by unknown gunmen to attack the Ukana, Essien Udim Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom residence of Senator Godswill Akpabio (APC, Akwa Ibom North West) have been repelled by gallant policemen attached to the former Senate Minority Leader. Eyewitness said the Senator was holding political meetings on Tuesday night at his country home when unknown gunmen numbering about 10 stormed his residence and shot sporadically causing stampede, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports According to our source, the incident brought the meeting into a temporary halt as those present in the meeting scampered for safety while the shooting continued unabated. A retired Deputy Inspector General of Police, Mr Udom Ekpoudom, who was also present at the political meeting at the time of the incident was seen making frantic calls for security beef up to help repel the attack. However security men attached to the resident after recovering from the initial shock were said to have responded gallantly with superior fire power which forced a retreat from the invading attackers.

According to Mr Raymond Inim who witnessed the incident, “we were holding a meeting with our leader, Senator Akpabio when suddenly people who were not part of the meeting ran into the Senator’s banquet hall where the meeting was held. “The Senator inquired to know the cause of the commotion and before someone could explain, sounds of sporadic gun shots rented the air. It lasted for a while before the situation was brought under control and we had to end the meeting abruptly,” he said. It was not immediately clear what the motives of the attackers were but eye witnesses said the gestapo manner the gunmen struck and disappeared called for security beef up around the former Senate Minority Leader who recently defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Media aide to Senator Akpabio, Mr Anietie Ekong, who confirmed the incident, told our correspondent who visited the area that the matter has been reported to security agencies in the state. Ekong, who said he was present during the incident, explained that, “The senator

was at home holding political meeting with some APC groups. A retired deputy inspector-general police, Udom Ekpoudom, was in that meeting. Bishop Samuel Akpan was also there. I was there as an observer. We were in the banquet hall. “Suddenly, people who were not part of the meeting rushed into the banquet hall, so the senator enquired from them what was going on. Before anybody could explain, we heard gunshots, sporadic shooting, outside. “The chief detail to the senator put out a radio message to all the policemen and other security men in the compound that they should be alert, that there is an attack.” Ekong said Akpabio and his guests were holed up in the banquet hall, while the senator’s security repelled the attack, thereby preventing the gunmen from having access to the compound. he shooting lasted for about 15 minutes, Ekong said. Akpabio, a former governor of Akwa Ibom State, defected on August 8 from the PDP to the APC. The DPO and the Area Commander in charge of Ikot Ekpene said that the hoodlums were armed robbers who invaded a nearby Petrol

station close to the Senators house and robbed people before taken to their heels on sighting security men. Meanwhile, the Akwa Ibom state chairman of APC Hon. Ini Okopido has condemned the unprovoked attack on Akpabio’s residence in Ukana, Essien Udim LGA, by unknown gunmen, while normal consultations with party leaders and stakeholders was ongoing in the private residence. A statement issued by the APC State chairman Ini Okopido warned that the APC family will not tolerate such unwarranted attack on any of her members/leaders. ‘’We were reliably informed that the hoodlums while shooting sporadically around the environment, robbed passersby and a nearby petrol station. Even though the incidence was promptly reported to the state Commissioner of police by Ekpoudom who witnessed the attack and the CP responded by sending police reinforcement to the scene, such action by unguided miscreants is unacceptable and condemnable politicians should play by the rules to forestall reprisal attacks’’ he added.

PDP gives Buhari 24 hours to arrest Miyetti Allah leaders over comment on Saraki No, we never threatened Saraki to resign, says Miyetti Allah

Idu Jude & Prince Nwankwo, Abuja The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) describes the outburst of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association, as ominous and revealing as it echoes the threats by the All Progressives Congress (APC) to force out the President of the Senate, Senator Bukola Saraki, from office The PDP in a press statement Wednesday, said that this unguarded statement by Miyetti Allah has exposed the synergy between the ruling party and some troublesome elements, who are being used to stoke division and create violent crisis that had resulted into daily bloodletting in various parts of the country. But Miyetti Allah in a statement said “This statement is unfortunate. I will categorically state that Garos Gololo spoke in his personal capacity and has no mandate to speak on behalf of the association. “Miyetti Allah is a non partisan association with

no interest in the political terrain and we couldn’t meddle into the affairs of political actors thereby compounding our already obvious challenges. I therefore urge all and sundry to disregard this statement. This statement is not from MACBAN and should be disregarded in its entirety. We take exception on this statement and Garos Gololo is entirely on his own, and will be sanctioned accordingly. We cannot afford to add up to the many challenges we are confronted with”. The PDP further noted that it is now abundantly clear to Nigerians that those fomenting crisis, including the bloody clashes in Benue, Taraba, Zamfara, Nassarawa, Plateau, Kaduna, Edo, Borno, Yobe, Enugu, Kogi, Adamawa and other states in our country, have political backers, who now want to channel them to achieve their unpatriotic quest to subvert the constitution and forcefully take over the National Assembly.

“Before now, to majority of Nigerians, the Miyetti Allah has always represented the military wing of the APC and the Buhari Presidency. It is incontrovertible that they have now become the fourth arm of government that can determine when and how to forcefully remove the number three citizen, the President of the Senate. “It is common knowledge that Mr. President has come under heavy public criticisms on how his body language has condoned the unguarded utterances and actions of these characters”. However, the PDP said in the light of these treasonable and inciting utterances by Miyetti Allah, “we demand that President Muhannadu Buhari, should within the next 24 hours, order the arrest and commence immediate trial of the leadership of this group, otherwise Nigerians will henceforth hold him directly responsible for the utterances and actions of the Miyetti Allah”. The PDP further said its

leadership is aware that Miyetti Allah does not represent the views and interests of the vast majority of cattle breeders or even any ethnic group in the country. It therefore urge all good spirited Nigerians to rise in condemnation of the actions and utterances of these misguided elements, who are being used to attempt a constitutional breach that portends grave danger to national cohesion and our hard earned democracy.

Saraki

PDP will win 2019 presidential poll, Saraki predicts in Ilorin By Kehinde Akinpelu, Ilorin Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki, has declared that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will win the 2019 general election and produce the next president for the country in 2019. Saraki, made the declaration in Ilorin, the Kwara state capital while addressing ward and local government delegates from the old and new members of the PDP in the state during an harmonisation meeting held at the Government House Banquet Hall, Ilorin. The Senate President confidently said that the future is better and brighter than the past, as he promised to ensure cohesion between the old and new PDP members in the state. He clarified that as the leader of the PDP, he has no anointed candidate in the forthcoming elections in the state. He assured delegates to the meeting that he would only support the best and the most popular candidates among the people, just as he warned party elders and other structures against dropping his name in the contest. He said: “In 2019, the PDP will produce the president. If we emerge victorious at the federal level all of us will be the beneficiaries. In the state, with your support we will win the state too. All of you here are the key players in Kwara politics. With unity of purpose, no party can contest with you. “We are here to unite all of us under the party we belong to today. I am assuring all members that there will be equity, internal democracy and justice. It is not going to be winners take all. As far as I am concerned, everybody here today belongs to our political structure. There is nothing like old or new Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). We have all become one PDP. “There is nobody here that will not say one way or the other we have not been together before. I am very sure that the future is bigger and brighter than the past. I want all of us to be united for the progress and development of Kwara State. “Where we are today,

as far as I am concerned, all of you belong to me. As par the politics of the state, nobody can wrest the power from us if we are united. By the grace of God, in the forthcoming elections, we will emerge victorious both at the federal and state levels. “We will ensure that we work as one party, because we have always worked together before. We will see that at the wards and local governments popular candidates emerge based on their popularity and acceptability. “I want to emphasis it that I don’t have any anointed candidate at all levels. I don’t have candidates for state assembly, it is the person you want in your constituency that I will okay. Don’t allow anybody to deceive you that I have endorsed any candidate. “I implore party leaders and elders not to drop my name to impose unpopular candidates. I don’t have candidates for the National Assembly. All of us will collectively choose who becomes the next governor. There will be equity, internal democracy and justice. “We will ensure that there is no faction but one PDP. We will ensure that meetings in the local government areas take place in one venue. And we will all work together for the interest of the party. “I want to assure you all that as far as I am concerned everybody belongs to one PDP family and there is no favouritism of one man over the other. I know that when we defected many of your leaders entertained fears that once I come, we will take over everything, but there is nothing like that. “Please go back home to start the work. I am sure many more will come back and join us because those that left, left under the wrong assumption that it will be different from what it used to be. “They were misled that those coming are out to move them away. Nobody is moving you away because this place belongs to you too. Let us go back and start work closely together and by the grace of God we will all be victorious. I urge both old and new members of the party to ensure peace and harmony in your wards and local government areas.”

NBC condemns demolition of Ayefele’s Short News 2019: Sen Boroffice calls for unity ‘Music House’

The demolition last weekend of ‘Music House’ owned by Gospel singer Yinka Ayefele has been condemned by the management of the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC). Music house is where the singer’s ‘Fresh FM’ is located in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital. The Director-General of NBC, Ishaq Midibbo-Kawu, on Wednesday in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital said the demolition was a worrisome development and did not speak well of the state government. Kawu who spoke to the News men said that “The development is worrisome because for all it is worth, the broadcast outfits are playing a big role in reducing

unemployment, especially in this situation where many young Nigerians are idle. They also play social, informational, educational and entertaining roles in the society. Such development does not speak well of the government and has a negative effect on the nation, especially at a point when more broadcasting outfits are influencing the social space in the country.” According to the NBC boss, such action by the Oyo state government can be given all manners of colorations including political vendetta and therefore should be avoided by those in leadership positions. “In this case particularly, there are so many issues that

can be weaved up negatively by people. We hope that as we move forward, we will be able to find a solution to the situation.” He said that his agency made contacts with some people in Oyo State as soon as he got hint of the development adding that he could, however, not stop it but promised that NBC would set up a meeting with the state government on how to find a way forward on the issue. According to the claims by Yinka Ayefele, the building “Music House” is valued at N800 million. Fresh FM he said has been in operation for 10 years before it was demolished in the early hours of Sunday.

He regretted that the state government had not done much to save

the people from the killer chemical, adding that “a new dimension to the problem was the smoke from the site that enveloped the entire community with very offensive and irritating odour that subjected residents to suffocation every evening. “The emission has recently become more damaging and escalating. Surroundings of the chemical site are caving in and the emission becomes stronger. We have tried to put out the fire burning underground to no avail and we decided to leave the rains to deal with it. “But despite the heavy rains so far experienced this year, the fire keeps on raging from the ground as if the rains are fuelling it and produces thick smokes. “Last night, after a little rain, we were unable to sleep. The most astonishing thing is that we have been recording sudden deaths in recent time,” he lamented.

Muodielo further revealed that the incident was first discovered in December 2017 at the community’s stream site called Oduga which suddenly dried up and in its stead, fire began to burn at the site, underground. He said that youths of the area had been deployed on several occasion to put out the fire but could not. “A team of geologists from Chukwuemena Odumegwu Ojukwu University, Uli, Anambra state had visited the site and discovered that there was a dangerous chemical deposited at the site with the recommendations that government should, as a matter of urgency, quench the fire to save the community from further exposure to the dangerous chemical”, he further lamented. He said it had been recommended that residents should be taking liquid milk every day to douse the effects of the chemical emissions.

A Chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), in Edo State, Chief Francis Inegbeniki, yesterday urged the leadership of the party to adopt the proposed direct primary which would throw up popular candidates. The Edo born politician who is aspiring for the Edo Central Senatorial District, while declaring his intention to run, spoke with newsmen in Benin City, Edo state, and dismissed the assertion that Edo Central is the strong hold of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party. Edo Central is the political stronghold of the senatorial district of former Board of Trustee, Chairman of the PDP, Chief Tony Anenih.

Ooni to politicians: Apply religious brotherhood to politics The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, has charged politicians to always apply religious brotherhood approach to their politicking to have electioneering process that is violence free. Ooni who is the Co-Chairman of National Council Of Traditional Rulers in Nigeria said this at his Ile Oodua palace while receiving hundreds of Muslim faithful led by the Chief Imam of Ifeland, Alhaji Abdul Samiu Abdul Hammed who had on their way from the praying ground visited the palace to pray for the king. His words: “The spirit of brotherhood being displayed by the faithful on a day like this is very laudable. At the Eid praying ground today, I saw politicians of opposing parties sitting side by side with one another”.

Gov Ajimobi and the Ayefele affair

Louis Odion

At the temple of justice on Monday, the Oyo State government’s lawyer apparently feared the wrath of the law named ‘contempt’. So, the senior advocate sought the easiest getaway by telling a lie whose incredulity can only be likened to the futility of seeking to hide behind a finger. When confronted on the effrontery of his client to demolish a property when the case was already being heard by the court, the learned counsel, without batting an eyelid, casually replied that the Oyo State government under Abiola Ajimobi knew nothing about the bulldozer that sneaked behind Music House, sheltering Fresh FM station along Ring Road in Ibadan, to wreak havoc in the small hours of last Sunday. But just before the rest of us began to wonder if extra-terrestrial creatures had actually infiltrated the nation’s space and transmogrified into the motorised beast that tore into Yinka Ayefele’s property that dawn, came a statement by the State government more or less disowning its own attorney, suggesting that the falcon could no longer hear the falconer. Without mincing words, the Oyo State government claimed responsibility, citing the refusal of the petitioner to regularise the building plan. The owner of Fresh FM is accused of making additions to the design originally approved in 2008; that the distortion now constitutes an environmental hazard, which the government claims was responsible for motor accidents recorded in the vicinity in recent times; and that the deadline issued the station to regularise its title fell on deaf ears. Fine argument, at least from the point of due process, if not sophistry. But in making a strong pitch for the sanctity of regulation, Governor Abiola Ajimobi and his people appear to have conveniently turned a deaf ear to a higher calling: Submission to the rule of law. Nothing but

bad faith is implied when a government proceeds with a demolition action in spite of an ongoing court case. Especially given that the petitioner is insisting that he has all the necessary building permits from the state authorities. Sitting in Ibadan penultimate Monday, an Oyo State High Court presided over by Justice I. S. Yerima, had ordered the hearing notice and necessary processes be served on the State government at the hearing of a motion ex-parte filed by Ayefele, the property owner, who is a popular musician. It is a moot point in law that any action was to be suspended by the defendant in the circumstance. It is therefore strange indeed that Ajimobi would still proceed in his avowed quest to correct a perceived illegality, only to commit another illegality. On that basis alone, it becomes difficult for anyone to defend the government’s action, however public-spirited the stated intention might have been. So, what could possibly be the justification – if not ungodliness and impunity – for the government’s mad haste in deploying the bulldozer when the case was already being heard in court, at the hour of a Sabbath Day when all true Christian believers should be preparing for morning worship in the temple? Again, what this episode has invariably put in focus is the propriety or otherwise of making citizens pay for what would seem the fruit of the dereliction of duty of civil servants. Assuming that Fresh FM actually infringed on the rule as argued by OYSG, there is no way the accuser itself can shirk vicarious responsibility. Where were the relevant government agencies when the disputed additional structures were being erected? Why was the owner not stopped along the way? Coming when fascism is still being read to the police detention of the

PREMIUM TIMES reporter recently for nothing more than performing his professional duty within constitutional provisions, the latest action against Music House is bound to heighten the fear of a possible epidemic of official intolerance in the land. Behind the facade being strenuously made by the Oyo State government of an alleged breach of extant building regulation, is indeed something quite unspeakable: Weighty charges of malice and prejudice against the State’s chief executive. Only recently, the governor himself had given hint of being under partisan pressure from within his cabinet to hurt the station for being adversarial. While featuring on a live programme of the same station, Ajimobi disclosed he had shunned such, prompting the belief that Fresh FM could change and become his supporter one day. Now, what came into circulation shortly before the demolition exercise was a strongly-worded memo purportedly written earlier by the state attorney general ordering the radio station to not only retract a comment made by a guest on one of its programme that was considered offensive to the administration but to also tender an unreserved apology to be broadcast intermittently for seven days. Against this backcloth, there is therefore enough circumstantial grounds to link the station’s refusal to cower to what is evidently an unreasonable demand by the government, as the trigger for this fascist action. While the government has reason to be offended if anyone had erroneously linked Ajimobi to having commercial interest in an abbatoir concern, it is clearly beyond its remit to make such prohibitive demand on the station. The station is only a platform. It is ludicrous indeed to expect it to retract or apologise for someone else’s comment.

What is reasonable in the circumstance is for the government to take advantage of the next available opportunity on the same platform to make its own case in exercise of the conventional right of reply. We are yet to hear if such demand was ever made but spurned. If nothing at all, the spontaneous public protest in Ibadan and the widespread condemnation across the country should tell Ajimobi that he has chosen the wrong target and time to flex his gubernatorial muscle. Assuming he ever won the legal argument, it is doubtful if he can also sway the court of public opinion. Let us face it – Ayefele is a cultural icon in his own right. What makes his legend outstanding is the very circumstance of its making. Here is a man who refused to resign to self-pity after a serious motor mishap. By uncommon human will and sheer industry, he thereafter parlayed his God-given talent in music to achieve celebrity and material success. Although now confined to the wheelchair, he has created a pulsating sound that has been moving the nation on the dance-floor in the last two decades. By that, he has become the people’s hero. So, when a government chooses to deploy a bulldozer cowardly in the night to pull down the monument erected by such an idol, especially under circumstances that appear malicious, sheer wickedness is what the crowd sees. Ajimobi ought to know that, though his bulldozers may have succeeded in disfiguring the physical house Ayefele built, it is simply impossible to completely overrun his shrine – at least in the minds of the people. However, it is not too late in the day for the governor to make amends. The most dignifying step forward is to immediately work out a compensation package to include allocation of a suitable parcel of land and a reasonable sum to enable Ayefele resettle and move on.

FG’s directive on SARS overhaul and matters arising

Dele Agekameh

While President Muhammadu Buhari was away on holiday, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, the vice president, made some decisions that largely satisfied Nigerians. One of these was a presidential directive issued to the inspector general of Police, ordering an overhaul of the “management and activities” of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), across the country. Whether it was due to the vice president’s popularity or for sheer exhaustion from endless clamouring for the dissolution of SARS, majority of Nigerians warmed up to the announcement, even though the notorious squad is, in truth, only getting a face lift. Ibrahim Idris, the inspector general of Police (IGP), swiftly responded to the directive by commanding his men to institute measures that they were already directed to carry out since last December. Even though the move was rejected back then by Nigerians because it was seen as merely cosmetic, the IGP re-echoed his directive, stating that all SARS operations would now be subsumed under FederalSARS, commanded by a commissioner of Police working straight from the police headquarters in the Department of Operations. With the exception of the IGP’s “declarations” that SARS operatives will now undergo psychological evaluation, as well as maintain human rights desks across all formations, every other part of the IGP’s order had already been announced last December, and it has made no difference to SARS’ behaviour. The vice president, like the IGP before, was motivated by a need to display concern for the continued demand for action on the SARS problem. But just like before, many are struggling to see how the IGP’s orders will change the

behaviour of the same men who were simply ‘SARS’ not too long ago. Perhaps, it would be unfair to say that the IGP has not complied with the directive of the vice president who ordered him to overhaul the “management and activities” of SARS. In the IGP’s order, the F-SARS unit is to steer clear of all civil matters, concentrate on prevention and investigation of armed robbery and halt all conduct of stopand-search activities on Nigerian roads. The problem with this is that he had given these same orders in December and people have been accosted by SARS operatives on the roads since then, without any intelligence backing but solely to extort. Popular musicians Reekado Banks and Dr. Sid are very public examples of people who have suffered harassment and extortion since December. The argument of the police force has always been that it is inappropriate for the people to call for the scrapping of a police unit that is integral to its fight against crime. The argument of Nigerians, in response, has been that the unit fights less crime than it harasses everyday people going about their daily lives, and if a misunderstanding of its objective is fundamental to its operations then the unit might as well not exist at all. Thus, the debate has become about preserving the core essence of the unit by keeping it alive, as opposed to addressing its ugly reality by scrapping it altogether. Although a few SARS operatives have been exposed and punished in the last few months, the percentage of those disciplined is terribly low in relation to the widespread abuses faced by Nigerians. It is not clear what the police leadership hopes to achieve by ‘federalising’ the

unit. Some may say that the creation of a federal commander at the force headquarters may be an attempt to insulate the IGP and the top hierarchy of the police from responsibility for the excesses of the unit by presenting a scapegoat in person of the F-SARS commander. Also, the use of the unit by the police itself encourages misunderstanding of its objectives. There is an understanding within the police that SARS men are the go-to squad for carrying out unpopular tasks and assignments, due to their lack of proper identification. Reports had it that SARS men were part of the arresting officers who took Lawal Daura, the immediate past boss of the Department for State Services (DSS), even though he is not an armed robber. PREMIUM TIMES journalist, Samuel Ogundipe, was also reportedly arrested and held by SARS operatives on trumped up allegations of mishandling and ‘stealing’ official secret documents. These are examples of SARS men being used to perform duties that are not within their purview, likely because of a reliance on their ruthlessness and the fear of it. While it is understandable that the police may have to consolidate men from different units to perform specific duties that require extra manpower or specific skillsets at any time, there is really no reason SARS men should have been involved in arresting one man in Aso Rock Villa or a harmless journalist in the course of his duty. The indiscipline and propensity to stray off the line of duty begins with these little needless assignments from the police leadership that serve as an endorsement of SARS rascality. The police may not be forthcoming about the truth of its formations being

majorly staffed by the men of SARS, after extensive and excessive guard duties with top government officials, public and private establishments and ‘important personalities’ have dwindled the cache of active, functional and somewhat rational men. What may be left is the runt of policemen known as SARS who cannot be dispensed with, else the wider country is left unprotected. This could explain the insistence by the police that SARS cannot be scrapped. In any case, the one part of this issue that the police hierarchy ought to concentrate on is the actual personnel that make up the notorious unit. Whatever re-organisations and “management overhauls” that may be made to SARS, the key concern to the public is the calibre of men operating in its name and their mentality towards public engagement and safety. SARS men, who have been conditioned to extort and harass for many years, cannot change overnight because of a negligible change of name and new uniforms. Although the IGP announced psychological evaluation for men of the unit, we as Nigerians know that this measure, if indeed carried out, will be an exercise in futility because the force will not or cannot pay real professionals to carry out the evaluations and if this miraculously happens, up to 80 per cent of the men of the unit may be recommended for dismissal. It is a tempting idea to see the men of SARS dismissed in their numbers but the ripple effects of such an extreme measure may be more dangerous for the public. It is therefore imperative that this measure be incorporated into a more robust recruitment regime to stem the inflow of thugs into the police at the initial stage.

Editorial Commentary The immoral majority (II)

Times Guest Columnist Mohammed Adamu

I

t was soon in all the grapevines of the nation’s media, that IBB had offered to State House Correspondents a chance to elect one of their own, to be made a ‘Minister’ in Shonekan’s Interim National Government. The State House Press Corps of my time was a 53-member body. We met once at the end of every month to deliberate on issues of common concern, but attendance although it was important it was not mandatory. There was an unwritten ‘code’ that we operated by, namely that our professional obligations to our respective organizations superseded our duty of fidelity to the Corps. It was the abiding sense of security in fraternity –rather than the existential worth of safety in number- that commanded our individual commitment to the Corp. But in addition to our end of month meetings, we also capitalize on major events happening at the Villa –like the meetings of the Armed Forces Ruling Council, AFRC- to meet ad hoc as we waited for the Council to rise. By the way, whenever we met ad hoc, not only did we not have to form a quorum (which was an unwritten requirement of about 25 of 52members), we did not also take major decisions. Such were reserved for our end of month meetings, or whenever a pressing matter could not wait then an emergency meeting was called by oral notice to every member, to tackle such exigency. Any decision taken at an end of month or a duly called emergency meeting was binding on all including those not in attendance. And although we operated an unwritten code, interestingly we had managed to keep by these rules, always. Or at least up to before IBB’s ‘apple of discord’. Mind you, it is not always that any group of journalists get to be made such gratuitous presidential offer. It probably takes once in a ‘Harleys Comet’ for such crunchy ‘bone’ to be thrown the way of a fraternity of ‘watch dogs’. And since IBB’s offer was conditioned upon complying with the due democratic process, this ‘bone’ –we thought- was damn too marrow-filled to be cracked at an ad hoc, chance meeting of the association. It would require more than just a ‘chance’ meeting whereat to place this tibia on the table for the best or lucky canines to grab. Thus any meeting at which a candidate-beneficiary for IBB’s offer would be elected must either be our regular end of month general meeting or an emergency one duly called by a properly circulated notice, -so that every member of the Corps was given equal opportunity not only to attend but also to vote someone of their choice; or maybe even to seek to be voted for. Legally speaking, and even in the absence of a written code, if any members, advertently or inadvertently was denied knowledge of such meeting, so that an offer made to all was now availed only to a few, such members could have recourse to the law and seek to void any decision taken thereat. Unfortunately it was at such ad hoc, impromptu meeting of the Corps attended by about twenty members who, by chance, happened to be within the Villa premises, that a group openly sympathetic to the candidature of NTA’s Sola Atere, seeing that it was in a comfortable ‘majority’, insisted that election should be conducted at that material time to produce a beneficial nominee for Babangida’s offer. A few members who knew better did call their attention to the apparent impropriety of turning an impromptu meeting into an electoral avenue for the election of a ‘ministerial nominee’ that observing the due democratic process was made a condition-precedent. But not even the absence of Atere’s only possible

opponent, the late Amechi Dike of Champion Newspapers at the meeting, would mollify the determination of this opportunistic immoral majority. Such is the character of ‘immoral majorities’. They are covetous, opportunistic and abusive of the due process. The ‘immoral majority’ can be a arithmetic ‘minority’ seizing opportune moments or exploiting a vacuum in the law to have a ‘way’ where it should have only a ‘say’. But it can also be an actual ‘majority’ acting tyrannically or unnecessarily asserting its ‘majority’ rights and privileges with impunity. The Atere group underhandedly overwhelmed the Chairman of the Press Corps, the late Reginald Okochie of FRCN (who I would have the privilege of succeeding) to call for a division of the barely twenty member-ad hoc house to resolve whether or not election should be conducted at that particular chance meeting. It was their only basis to the claim of democratic righteousness -that a majority of the twenty ad hoc attendees had voted to agree that the meeting could vote to elect our ministerial nominee. But you do not adopt the ‘due process’ to democratize an illegality. You do not apply due process to sex up due process. Or as lawyers would say, you cannot put ‘something’ on ‘nothing’. If the meeting was not qualified to handle an election, neither a majority vote of those in attendance nor even their unanimous approval could cure the meeting of that defect. What the Atere group insisted on doing was as preposterous as PDP’s northern and southern Governors’ forums respectively, in 2007 voting to resolve the question whether or not to uphold the controversial measure of zoning which ironically was enshrined in their party constitution. To vote to decide whether or not to obey the law is as ridiculous as members of a debtor organization subjecting the obligation to pay their creditors to a ‘yes’ or ‘no’ vote. It is not true that the majority is always right. Sometimes it is the silent minority that is right. Those of us angling for the due democratic process although we were in the minority, we were nonetheless right. Nor is it always, as they say, that the due electoral process is a proof of justice. Suffice it to say that a member of the proAmechi Dike group who was at the Villa when that travesty of the democratic process was about to take place, had managed to send an SOS to some of us by our offices’ land lines. But only about five of us were able to make it to the President’s Congress room, venue of the meeting just when FRCN Kaduna’s Buhari Auwalu –the electoral umpire- was about to distribute ballot papers for the election. The Democrat Newspaper’s Sareef Mohammed, Amechi Dike and one or two others quietly passed word round to the few pro-due process members, informing them that I was going to raise a point of order objecting to the conduct of the election and that we would need some kind of mild ‘mob’ support for us to halt the process and then stage a protest walk-out. And it worked. We gathered our twigs and our pellets and we left; leaving behind about fifteen of them, now in absolute ‘majority’. But rather than proceed with the election, since they had no dissenting voice, they too had dispersed. It was not the prick of democratic conscience. It was the fear that the offeror of that gratuity, IBB, might be told that only fifteen members out of 53 had gathered to ‘elect’ our ministerial nominee. It was the only reason this ‘immoral majority’ beat a hasty retreat. But it was not yet Uhuru! To be concluded

OUR POSITION Ajimobi, Ayefele’s FM house and rule of law The demolition of Yinka Ayefele’s property housing Fresh FM station located along Ring Road in Ibadan, Oyo State, will continue to attract public condemnation and odium for some obvious reasons. Oyo State government has claimed responsibility for the ungodly act carried out at the hour of a Sabbath Day when the matter is already before Oyo State High Court. The act therefore brings to fore once again impunity and absolute lack of respect for rule of law. The fact that Justice I. S. Yerima, of Oyo State High Court had ordered Ayefele to put the Oyo State government on notice before the property was demolished demonstrates the height of disregard for the rule of law, which we all profess so loudly in a democratically elected government like Governor Abiola Ajimobi’s Oyo State government. It is a moot point in law that any action that will foist a fait accompli on the court must be avoided by the defendant in contentious issues before the court of law. It is therefore strange indeed that Ajimobi would still proceed in his avowed quest to correct a perceived illegality, only to commit another illegality. On that basis alone, it becomes difficult for anyone to defend the government’s action, however publicspirited the stated intention might have been. So, what could possibly be the justification – if not ungodliness and impunity – for the government’s haste in deploying the bulldozer at weekend that is prohibited for an enforcement, when the case was already before the court? In other climes, Oyo State government’s complaint that the owner of Fresh FM made additions to the designed plan originally approved in 2008 without regularising the building plan would have been resolved through the same court . As it stands now, the media was the target of the demolition of Fresh FM station. We, therefore, condemned the state

government action, moreso, when it has been revealed that the immediate motive behind the demolition was to avenge Fresh FM station refusal to retract an adversarial comment made by a guest on one of its programme that was considered offensive to the administration which also insisted the station tender an unreserved apology to be broadcast intermittently for seven days. We are of the opinion that no responsible medium will oblige to such prohibitive request. At best, what the state government should do is to seek opportunity on the same platform to make its own case in exercise of the conventional right of reply. We therefore advice Oyo State government to bring this infamous crisis to an end by repairing the Fresh FM building that was demolished or relocate and build a new station for Ayefele. These are the only options available to Oyo State government to redeem its battered image on the matter.

2019: YCE warns against political carnage Abiodun Taiwo, Abeokuta The Yoruba Council of Elders (YCE) has warned politicians to avoid any action that may take Nigeria back to the dark age of political violence and killings. YCE, an umbrella Elder’s organ of all Yoruba Socio-Cultural body in a statement issued in Abeokuta by the interim President, Dansaki Samuel Agbede and Alh. Rasheed Olusegun Adesina, the Acting Publicity Secretary implored all Yoruba sons and daughters in the political arena to play the game with caution. The group warned against the repeat of political carnage in the early 60’s and “we will never wish for a return to such a rape on democracy and wanton killings culminating into the military coup of 1966. “Many of our sons and daughters lost their lives both as politicians and serving military officers. We implore our sons and daughters to

ensure the status of the Yoruba race as the most enlightened, pace-setter in politics and peace loving where equal opportunities are given to non Yorubas in all human endeavours in the federation”. Yoruba Council of Elders also condemned the rampaging killings of innocent people in various parts of the country reportedly associated with some set of people. “We call for immediate response from both the State and Federal Government to put in motion machinery of all security operatives and other measures that will instantly put an end to the unfortunate incidents of insecurity, kidnapping, youth restiveness, religious and communal clashes in various states of our nation”. SERG, at a press conference in Abuja, said it had observed the dangerous activities of the IMN, whose terrorism appears to have the blessing of the federal government as not much has been done to deal with it the same dispatch with which the IPoB problem was addressed. The group said the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), did not commit half of atrocities that IMN has committed and continue to commit but no action has been taken against them.

Minister commends Nigerians, says 2019 year of decision Tom Okpe, Abuja

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed has commended Nigerians for their perseverance and support for the Administration of President Muhammadu Buhari, describing the general election year, 2019 as ‘year of decision’. Speaking with journalists in his country home at Oro, Kwara State, on the occasion of this year’s Eid-el-Kabir, the Minister assured Nigerians that their sacrifices toward the emergence of a better Nigeria will not be in vain. He, however, appealed that Nigerians should remain steadfast and be vigilant, especially as the 2019 elections approach. ‘’The year 2019 is the year of decision for Nigeria. It is the year that the critical decision will be made as to whether Nigeria will continue along the path of development, in all ramifications, social, economic and political that this Administration has embarked upon since 2015, or the country will retrogress

and backslide to the throes of massive and primitive looting and lack of development. ‘’As we approach this critical fork on the road, I have no iota of doubt that the good people of Nigeria will choose the path of development, having seen the commitment, sincerity and patriotism of this Administration. It is clear, from all indications, that Nigerians are not going back to Egypt”, he said. Alhaji Mohammed noted that because of the people’s support and the achievements of the Administration, the All Progressives Congress (APC) will win, even with a wider margin, in 2019, thus sealing the fate of the naysayers. ‘’Many cynics have asked: Why should the APC-led Administration be returned to power? What has it achieved to justify the votes of Nigerians? My answer has been consistent: This Administration has done what no other Administration has done in the history of Nigeria in putting the country firmly on the path of sustainable growth and development, especially in the area of infrastructure,

economy, agriculture, the fight against corruption and the battle against insecurity. ‘’Never in the history of our country has any Administration embarked on such a massive infrastructural development as this Administration. The whole country is one huge construction site. Roads are being constructed in all the six Geo-political zones. ‘’In the area of agriculture, it has been a huge revolution. Let’s take one of our national staples, such as rice, as an example. When we came in, there were 5 million rice farmers. Today, we have in excess of 11 million rice farmers. Nigeria has never been closer to achieving self sufficiency in rice. ‘’This Administration has employed 500,000 unemployed graduates under its Social Intervention Program (SIP). No government in our country’s history has ever done that”, the Minister said. Eid el-Kabir: FG reiterates determination to develop more infrastructure, support to Nigerians Motolani Oseni Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, has said that the Buhari administration will continue to develop more infrastructure nationwide, and focus on the common man in order to take Nigerians out of poverty through its social investment programmes. Osinbajo disclosed this during a townhall meeting on Tuesday in Bariga/Somolu LCDA in Lagos State to felicitate with Lagosians on the Eid-el-Kabir celebrations. The Vice President, also, used this opportunity to call for unity among all Nigerians, while noting that the administration’s National Social Investment Programmes (N-SIP) were geared towards improving the welfare of ordinary Nigerians. According to him, “the President focus has always been on the common man. So, when we came, we decided on a few things to tackle youth unemployment. First, the N-Power programme to engage as many young people who are graduates as possible. We started with 200,000, and just this month, we have employed another 300,000. So, in our N-Power programme, we have 500,000 young graduates who are employed in the programme. Now every local government in Nigeria has N-Power graduate.” Prof. Osinbajo further stated that the Buhari administration has been able to embark on the completion of more infrastructure projects and achieve more with less funds because of President’s Buhari’s honesty and the seriousness of the administration to improve the country’s fortunes. He said, “In the past four years of the previous administration, over US$393 billion was earned in oil proceeds alone. In the past three years, we have earned US$94 billion, look at the difference. And the reasons are very straightforward. The price of oil was about half of what it used to be. But with the same $94 billion, we have been able to do far more. “When we got into office, 24 states had not paid salaries for over six months and we ensured that these salaries were paid. And President Buhari said then, “Look, I have been a salary earner all my life, I have never done any business; the only thing I ever done is government work, either as a soldier or in government. I cannot imagine how anybody can go to sleep as a governor without paying the salaries of his workers.” So, we made sure that we paid

salaries and we have done so many other things. “In investments, look at the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway; for almost 12 years, with all that money, it was never done. Now we have set about and we are doing it, we will complete it. Also, the Lagos-Kano railway project, so many of us know that we are moving towards Ibadan now. And we are going to complete it. The Vice President further said the Buhari administration will continue to support petty traders and small businesses to ensure that more Nigerians are taken out of poverty. He said, “The other thing we have done is GEEP (Government Enterprise and Empowerment Programme), a micro-credit scheme for market women and

others. We are doing one now for petty traders that is called TraderMoni. We have done it in Lagos we are going to do at least 100,000 in Lagos and 2 million across the country. The traders here in Bariga must benefit from it. We also have the one for people far bigger than that which is called GEEP. “I want to emphasize that everything we are doing, our focus, first of all, is to ensure that people are taken out of poverty. Our country is a very big; over 200 million people, many young people coming out everyday. Aside from that, we also want to ensure that anybody who is doing anything at all, who is trading, artisans, mechanics; we are able to support them”, he stated.

According to him: “I came here to see for myself and to see how to put these facilities to best use, as we have urgent need of such structures for an educational institution. It’s very

extensive, furnished and we will find use for it.” The Principal of Elahor Grammar School, where the project was sited, Mr. Odigie Evbarmwenraya, said the blocks of classrooms and dormitory are fully equipped and officially handed over to the community on completion this year. Mr. Odigie noted that “the projects are greatly underutilised and we needed to alert the government as the facilities here are of high standard and state-of-the-art, compared to those paraded by some conventional universities in the country.” He said the contract for the facilities was awarded in 2014 and handed over to the community in 2018.

Kebbi traders seek N2bn loan to boost business Haruna Aliyu Usman, Birnin Kebbi Kebbi State Traders Association of Nigeria has requested for a loan facility from the state government of about N2 billion to enable them to recapitalised and resume business activities after a devastating fire incident at the Birnin Kebbi Central Market that razed their stocks to rubbles. The Daily Times recalls that nearly eight hundred shops and temporary luck-up structures, were destroyed by the inferno. The state chairman of the association, Ahaji ummaru Dangura Gwadangaji told our correspondent that the affected traders have written to the state government with breakdown of the loan request. Gwadangaji commended the governor of Kebbi Atiku Abubakar Bagudu for his timely intervention and assistance during the incident; he however said that “the damage

required capable hands to be able to wriggle out of the natural disaster.” According to the traders’ leader, those with already low capital are the ones most affected as lots of them are out of business since the fire incidence. He noted that work was ongoing to reconstruct the market saying that the reconstruction can only provide shops but not business. He appealed to both federal and state government to come to the aid of the victims by providing them with a loan. While appreciating the governor for the construction of modern markets at Yauri, Zuru, Jega and Argungu the chairman noted that such gestures would increase the state’s internal revenue generation. Meanwhile, the chairman also declared that the traders unanimously endorsed Governor Bagudu for a second term in the 2019 polls. He also urged Nigerians regardless of tribe and religion to remain peaceful and law abiding.

APRA joins World to mourn Kofi Annan Godwin Anyebe The African Public Relations Association (APRA) joins the world to mourn the passing away of a global colossus and true African icon, Kofi Annan. By his death, Africa has lost one of its greatest brand assets who along with the likes of Nelson Mandela impacted heavily on the narrative for a more Positive Africa especially in the face of contrived negativity. In life and death, Annan remains

an inspiration to Africans and the world at large. His life is a challenge for everyone to always strive for a better Africa and indeed world. In APRA’s opinion there’s no better way to immortalize Annan and preserve his legacy, than for the African Union and nationstates on the continent to adopt and implement policies of human advancement in peace, good governance and people’s welfare which he stood for. APRA commiserates with members of his family, especially the African fraternity and the world over this irreparable loss.

Nigerian cargoes slowly cleared, as crude edges up Motolani Oseni with Agency After the drift lower in differentials, several more unsold Nigerian cargoes on Wednesday have been cleared. The Nigerian crude edged up yesterday after a flurry of unsold cargoes traded on the spot market, although traders said the market was still oversupplied and the recent show of strength may not last. With this development, fewer

than half a dozen are available from the August programme and around 12-15 from the September programme, traders said. This is down from close to 30 at the start of the week. Traders said both Forcados and Qua Iboe have been bid up, Qua was last offered at more than $1.50 a barrel above dated Brent, from $1.00 the previous day. A cargo of Forcados was heard to have been offered up around $1.35 a barrel above the dated price, from $1.30 the previous day.

“Let’s see how long sellers can stick with these numbers,” one trader said. Meanwhile, Angola is set to export 49 cargoes in October after four cargoes of Gindungo, a new grade, were added to the preliminary programme. September had 47 cargoes. Although, U.S. crude oil stockpiles fell more than expected last week as imports declined and refinery runs held close to record highs, while gasoline and distillate inventories rose, the Energy

Information Administration said on Wednesday. But Spain’s Cepsa expects to restart the gasoline-making fluid catalytic cracker at its San Roque oil refinery on Aug. 22 after a brief planned outage, a spokeswoman said on Wednesday. However, International Monetary Fund (IMF) said on Tuesday it would begin talks with Angola over providing financial support after the oil producing country’s economic growth was weaker than expected this year.

we will continue to explore ways of keeping them satisfied and also uphold our culture of excellence. Also, he expressed appreciation to TNL’s “committed dealers” and other patrons, who he said “deserve worthy commendation” for their “consistent support even in this challenging business climate to ensure that we maintain our leadership position and the success of the Toyota brand in the Nigerian market.” The TNL’s Brand Manager, Mr Bayo Olawoyin, who gave details of the new Camry’s features and its selling points, said the new model was built in such a way that it offers the owners real value for their money. Olawoyin listed some of the striking features in the new generation Camry to include back monitor with the pedestrian detector, intelligent clearance sonar rear cross traffic auto brake, adaptive front lighting system, rear electric sunshade, rear electric reclining seats, electronic parking brake. He said the new Camry’s selling points are found in its leading fuel economy and driving performance, likewise in the high-quality ride, topclass safety performance, and segment-leading advanced human-machine interface. For the interior, he said the vehicle had been redesigned to be roomier especially for the rear occupants to enhance the luxury feel of the vehicle, and the seats redesigned to increase comfort for all occupants. “Camry’s newly developed direct shift 8-Speed automatic transmission improves acceleration from a stop, provides a smooth ride even at high speeds and helps enhance fuel efficiency. “The three distinct available drive modes give you even more control. Sports mode

indulges your spirited side with a sharper acceleration feel; Eco mode adjusts throttle input to maximise your efficiency. Normal mode blends fuel economy with performance. Thanks to this choice of drive modes, a perfectly tailored drive arrive with the push of a button,” Olawoyin said. The new generation Camry, he said, also came with a rear seat which can be reclined at the touch of a button, reduced gap between windshield and roof to reduce wind noise, a hood silencer to keep engine noise out of the cabin, rear control panel allows power seat, power sunshade and AC adjustment from the rear cabin of the vehicle. The vehicle, he said also offers a compelling choice of petrol engines, the all-new 2.5L Dynamic Force fourcylinder and a new 3.5L V6, each delivering a sophisticated blend of performance and efficiency.

According to the carmaker, “both engines utilise the D-4S direct-injection system, which selects the optimal injection method based on driving conditions to pack a powerful punch with enhanced fuel economy to boot. “The new 2.5L engine has improved performance by approximately six per cent over that of the out-gone model,” and while talking about performance, Olawoyin said, “the new Camry’s high efficiency, high-powered next generation Dynamic Force Engine, powerful acceleration and new direct shift 8AT contribute to the car’s low fuel consumption.” The car also came standard with an Advanced Airbag System with advanced dualstage SRS driver and front passenger airbags, plus the front and rear side curtain airbags, which made it nine airbags in all to ensure a prime focus on owners’ safety.”

FG denies funding TraderMoni loan scheme with recovered Abacha loot Mathew Dadiya, Abuja The National Social Investment Office has said that the recently launched TraderMoni microcredit loan scheme will not be funded with the recovered Abacha booty. The social investment office noted that a false message has been circulating on social media suggesting that the repatriated funds will be used to finance the loan scheme. Maryam Uwais, Special Adviser to the President on Social Investment, on Tuesday, said that the purpose of the Abacha recovered fund was for beneficiaries of the conditional cash transfer. “The National Social Investment Office wishes to categorically state that the Abacha Loot is slated to be paid as grants to only beneficiaries of the Conditional Cash Transfer (CCT) Programme hosted on the national social register,” the statement read. “The National Social Register currently comprises data of the poorest and most vulnerable households from 33 state social registers, around the country. The data consists of information collated through a meticulous process that predates the inception of this administration (in 8 states), which database would have developed to include social registers from all of states of the federation and the FCT, by the end of October 2018. Mrs Uwais said, “following the apparently wide circulation of this misinformation, it is important to clarify that TraderMoni is a separate microcredit loan scheme under the Government Enterprise and Empowerment Programme (GEEP), one of the four social investment programmes of the President Muhammadu Buhari administration. It is managed by the Bank of Industry. Funding for this scheme is derived from the federal government’s social investment budget appropriated by the national assembly. Furthermore, the process for disbursement of TraderMoni loans does not involve paper applications or forms, and it is not disbursed through just one financial institution.”

The governor said, “All income tax is hereby suspended until further notice. We will advocate for an operation to catch them,” he said. “No collection of tax from market women without shops in the market and anyone culpable will be sentenced

to five years in prison.” The governor also suspended the collection of tax and revenue from hawkers and abolished revenue collection across the local government areas and all activities of revenue contractors. He also approved N150 million grants for market women without shops in the state capital and urged each local government council in the state to assist petty traders. He noted that henceforth all revenue collectors in the state would appear in their uniforms for easy identification. Umahi directed Kelechi Igwe, the deputy governor, to set up a committee on revenue to hold a meeting with market women, traders, council chairmen, traditional rulers and other stakeholders to come up with acceptable revenue they were to pay. However, Umahi ordered the commissioner for lands and survey to moderate house rents in the state.

Thrills as DIGITEST 2018 camp closes amidst funfair

Some participants at Erin-Ijesa Waterfall, Osun State.

Esther Taiwo, Lagos Participants at this year’s DIGITEST an annual creative camp and competition for young people between ages eight and 18 will not forget in a hurry their experience at the annual programme. DIGITEST is an ICT based camp and competition for young people, a flagship programme of Digital Peers International (DPI), that has run annually for 16 years in various states across Nigeria’s geo-political zones and in some countries around the world. The theme for DIGITEST 2018 tagged “Selling Without Borders” was birthed on the realisation that digital marketing has formed the backbone of the world’s economy today having become a medium of communication and a skill that everyone should have irrespective of their job profile. Beyond Information and Communication Technology, DIGITEST is a platform for impacting young people with the culture of leadership, career guides, entrepreneurship and cognitive development. At DIGITEST 2018, participants were trained to become selfsustaining through leveraging trending digital marketing tools to sell anything and profit largely in the global market. Participants at this year’s Summer Camp came from different parts of the country with great expectations about having a fantastic time ahead and were handed their DIGITEST 2018 camp kit by the DIGITEST

National Coordinator (DNC), Mrs. Ibukun Odusote. The DIGITEST 2018 Summer Camp opened in a grand style with a host of delegates from different parts of Nigeria among whom were the Vice Chancellor of Obafemi Awolowo University, Prof. Eyitope Ogunbodede, the DIGITEST National Coordinator, Mrs. Ibukun Odusote, DPI’s Board of Trustees Representative, Engr. Adeolu Odusote, Prof. Sola Aderounmu, Prof. Ladi Osasona, Pastor Tunji Agboola, the Executive Director of BAYI, the General Manager, News, and the team from NTA. At the ceremony, a lot of important personnel engaged the participants, accompanied with words of appreciation, supports and assurance of a positive achievement from the camp by the DIGITEST National Coordinator, Mrs. Ibukun Odusote. After the 2018 edition of DIGITEST was officially opened, participants posed for pictures with the delegates, and few got interviewed by the NTA news team. Indeed, it is delighting to say that the grand opening ceremony was totally a success. Participants also received lectures on various topics on digital marketing classes which were impactful as the topics covered the core areas needed to achieve a successful digital marketing training. The lectures were hands-on and participants were divided into three categories: The Junior category headed by Mr. Imam Abdulrasaq, Senior category taken by Mrs. Chidinma Aroyewun and

Teacher category by Mr. Olalekan Oni. Renewable energy classes were taken by facilitators from BAYI and the lectures majored on following areas which include Resistance value increment, Current/Voltage Abstraction and Energy dissipated measure in WATT. Participants were also guided on how to install and execute renewable energy projects and were taken on a life planning and career choice sessions by Mr. Precious-Jay, who took the audience into an insightful journey on self-identity. The session gave most listeners perspective and the desire to look

inwards to fetch the rich deposit of each individuals’ potentials. Afterwards, resource persons from BAYI gave a little group work on success and failure decisions in life. There were also religious activities at the camp as weekend at DIGITEST 2018 camp experienced an array of religious activities starting with the Jumat service, then an uncommon church service which was held in the camp with Pastor Dare Adekunle, who led the Christian participants into depths of God’s Word with the topic, “Sacrifices from God”. The saying “All Works Without Play Makes Jack a Dull Boy” played out as the DIGITEST National Coordinator, Mrs. Ibukun Odusote, led the entire participants to an exciting place where they saw God’s natural gift to mankind “Olumirin water fall.” Mr. Kehinde Osewa carefully narrated the discovery of the waterfall, and said that the ancient body of water was discovered by a woman called ‘Yeye Aye’ who happened to be a daughter of Oduduwa. He also said that the Olumirin waterfall has seven steps and three major falls. It was a pleasure dinning with the Vice Chancellor of Obafemi Awolowo University, Prof. Eyitope Ogunbodede, who was represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor Academic, Professor A. S. Bamire and the University Librarian, Dr. F. Z. Oguntuase and other dignitaries who were present. Participants also received a royal welcome from the Ooni of Ife, His imperial Majesty, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, Ojaja II. The participants were received into the Palace of the Ooni by one Chief Idowu, who received the delegation with the narration of historic culture and heritage of the palace and Ile-Ife as a whole. Later that day, the Ooni of Ife

g17 himself, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, came out to receive and address his special guests as he called the participants. He also narrated the cultures and customs of Yoruba land and Ife and continued with entertaining questions asked by the children. At the end, he sincerely appreciated the visit and was amazed by the questions asked by the children. It was a wonderful experience, pleasure speaking and taking group and personal pictures with the Ooni of Ife. There was also a special event tagged EDUTAINMENT which provides a platform for educational fun and gaming activities such as quiz and debate competitions. The quiz was successful and the winners who emerged from Zenith house were Akinbami Philips and Adenekan Tobiloba, while the Debate also ended with OAU house as the winning team, Abimbola Zenith and Ajibola Semilore. Teacher’s team were not left out as BAYI house, Adegoke-Adefeliu Tosin finished well as winners of the debate competition. Indeed, it is always exciting to experience the content of the brains behind the beautiful faces and glamourous outfits as Mr. & Miss. DIGITEST pageantry also featured on camp. The 2018 edition has raised the bar with awesome personalities, beautiful hearts, wonderful outfits, splendid atmospheres and electrifying questions that determined to a large extent the contestants who eventually emerged as winners of Mr. & Miss DIGITEST2018; Melody and Feranmi. Highlight of DIGITEST 2018 was the prize giving to the winning teams in the senior, junior and teachers’ categories. With so much excitement, the winning teams came up stage to receive brand new laptops and many more gifts. Mrs. Ibukun Odusote and Digital Peers International, the organiser of DIGITEST, seek to empower more young people with skills that will enable them create global solutions for tomorrow and solve the peculiar challenges in our society today.

Ganduje lacks enough political structure to be threat to Kwankwaso in Kano - Johnson Barr. Ladipo Johnson is the Lagos State coordinator of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, the political group of former Kano State governor and now Senator, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso. In this interview with PATRICK OKOHUE, Johnson speaks of the power game that made Kwankwaso leave the All Progressives Congress (APC) to his former party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and what his next political move will be. You are the coordinator of the Kwankwaso campaign group in Lagos State. Well, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso has not stated that he is contesting. I am the Lagos State coordinator of the Kwankwasia family. The Kwankwasia movement. If and when we decide to run either for senate or presidency, we will announce it and then have a campaign team. Well, he has just left the APC under whose platform he became a senator and returned to PDP where he was minister and governor. What do you think informed this? Is it irreconcilable differences, is it because of the governor that was said to try to run him out of town in Kano? Or the presidency? What is happening? Why is he joining others to abandon APC that they built together? The first thing I always tell people is that please do not do Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso the injustice of trying to compare Governor Ganduje to him. Ganduje cannot begin to try to run Kwankwaso out of town. He doesn’t have the structure, he doesn’t have the people even as a sitting governor. Better still as you well know, the two people with the biggest political structure in Kano have come together, former minister, former governor Ibrahim Shekarau is now working hand in hand with Kwankwanso. So Ganduje is an infinitesimal decimal in Kano right now. Now we all know Senator Kwankwaso contested against the President. He was runner up at the primaries. He didn’t talk, he didn’t complain. He worked, he talked for the party and even oversaw Jigawa and Kaduna states for the APC in the general election and you know the votes that came out from those states. In any proper political setting and this is the second set of mistakes by the current administration of the President. It would be normal, even at local level, we do it, at state levels we do it, it would be normal to say okay, come together, the different people that came together to win the election, how do we move forward regarding appointments. How do we make sure we put square pegs in square holes. Don’t get me wrong, those who may be reading this will say ah! Politicians, they want to share. It’s not about sharing. What about being loyal? Loyalty is a two way thing because the question you are asking me is why isn’t Kwankwaso loyal enough to remain

in the party. But loyalty is a two way thing. The husband must be loyal to the wife and the wife must be loyal to the husband. Whether she is in the other room or in the sitting room. They have to be loyal to each other. I used that so that the

is it that everything that is being done in the APC or that has been done in the past one to two years is about ensuring that no one else comes up to test democracy to contest for the primaries. When you do such things, you chase people away. So it is

Johnson

person concerned will understand. So they have to be loyal to each other. Now, when someone is in charge of three states, he delivered and gave you the highest votes, 1.9 million from his state, it’s not that he brought all the votes, but he was overseeing it, surely that person should be part of some of the decisions about your moving forward, but when from day one you shut that person out and then after a short while you go, like they did in Kwara, you go and without a congress take away the political structure from the person, then you have pushed the person away. And Nigerians are amazing people. Why would you expect that you take the structure of a party away from someone without going to the field as we say, you take the structure away from him, and you are still talking to him to stay within the party. Does it make sense? Why

In any proper political setting and this is the second set of mistakes by the current administration of the President. It would be normal, even at local level, we do it, at state levels we do it, it would be normal to say okay, come together, the different people that came together to win the election, how do we move forward regarding appointments.

only natural that if you are not loyal to a set of people, they will find a home elsewhere. Now even if they have moved back to where they had left before, maybe it is because those that they left before and who lost election now realise that oh, there is an opportunity that we can win again and they are more than willing to welcome them. So, all that has happened yes, as Nigerians we say when do we outgrow crisscrossing and politics of interest, unfortunately our country, the politicians or politics in Nigeria has not reached a stage where we are playing ideological politics. Where you know that this person is right or center, left or center, and he wouldn’t be found there in the other party, but it will continue to be like that when the party or the people entrusted with upholding the constitution of the country, rule of law, fair play and the political balance of the country tend to want to move things towards their advantage, it will keep getting the same problem so what you have seen is a reaction. For every action, there is definitely going to be a reaction and the reactions will continue all the way to 2019 and the people of Nigeria will join in the reaction because they are not blind and they see what is happening, so you cannot keep fooling Nigerians all the time. By saying every Nigerian is a thief and I’m the only one that wants to deal with them, if I deal with them, you will be alright. They’ve seen enough to know that oh, the people who surround you are not spending money as if they are not thieves. They have seen enough to know that.

Well, your principal Senator Kwankwaso like you said has not declared that he’s running, but in 2015 he did run and the body language seem to suggest he would run again. If indeed he decides to run again, what chances do you think he has against the plethora of aspirants in this dispensation especially the younger people and then, some are saying people above 60 shouldn’t even bother? The good thing is that Alhaji Kwankwaso himself is just 61 years old, he is probably more than 10 years younger than Atiku Abubakar and of course baba, the President. But we try not to talk about age. We talk about capacity. You can have a 40 year old who is incompetent like you can have a 70 something year old who act as if he is inexperienced. So maturity, experience doesn’t come with age. We believe that Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has shown enough over the years that he knows what it takes, he is experienced and he’s administrator per excellence. Friend and foe alike in the political sphere will tell you that Kwankwaso is a performer. All you need to do is look at the miracle he performed in Kano. So. yes the body language, his whole body language I hope is adjusting to the body language of also the supporters. I personally want him to run. I keep talking to him about running as with many other people because we believe that he is dynamic and he knows and have what it takes to move this country forward in the next four years. I believe his chances are very bright. Strategically, I think it is clear that if you look at the election result, the past two or three election circles, you will find the incumbent now is usually there getting some seven million votes from the North West. The key to this election is the North West and there is only one man with a political machinery at the moment that can defeat or match the incumbent in the North West and that is Rabui Musa Kwankwaso and I believe that that is the key the PDP will be looking at while trying to pick their flag bearer because the PDP have 10 or now let me say 13 states with those who are crossing over. That is a platform and it is safe to say that a lot of states will be flipped over from the green blue of the APC to the red and green of the PDP in the next national elections. So I think that his chances are very bright. He is very experienced from the time he was in the National Assembly as deputy speaker under the SDP through to Constituent Assembly, through to being governor twice, a total of eight years. Minister for Defence, well, he was not ambassador, but representative of the envoy of the President to Dafur and Sudan. He was also on the board of the NDDC (Niger

Delta Development Commission), representing the North West. So he’s got the experience and most importantly is one that has passion for Nigeria. He has a passion for the youth, for education, health care and welfare of the people and I think that coming from an administration that had promised so much, including five thousand naira welfare to the unemployed, I think that a lot of the masses in Nigeria will know that there is someone who is tested with the masses and that he would deliver. That is the key. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso. Recently, the President sent a budget from INEC to the National Assembly. He had earlier complained about the National Assembly members imputing projects into the budget without his knowledge and now he’s sending a budget for INEC telling the National Assembly members to take money from those projects they included to put it for INEC and some people are seeing it as the President wanting to truncate the election, but wanting to blame it on the National Assembly. How do you react to that? Well, we are not fools. It’s clear. It is clear it’s something that is not workable, something that may not happen and if the executive feel that they will play to the sympathy of the masses over it, the masses have seen enough to know that we have two people to watch here, it’s no longer blaming the National Assembly all the time. They’ve seen now, they’ve seen what they did in Benue. They’ve seen enough even in Ekiti to know that this administration is not holier than thou. The APC is not holier than thou. They have seen what they spent on elections in Ondo, what they spent in Ekiti, it’s an open secret, so Nigerians are not fools anymore. Don’t you think that even if the President had not asked for INEC’ money though virement, that six months to election it’s too close for the President to talk about budget for the INEC? When did INEC send their request? That’s where we should start. We shouldn’t just blame the President. When did INEC itself send the request, but if they sent it earlier, then we can shine our torchlight on the Presidency. What did you wait for to submit, what I don’t understand is why is it so high? Why is it so expensive? What was the budget in 2015? And what is the proposed budget now? It’s hefty. Do we have to spend so much on elections all the time? If INEC bought vehicles last time, are those vehicles all gone? I don’t understand. I just don’t understand it. Every time it keeps going up. It’s as if we are not serious people.

East Bengal withdraw offer for Kano Pillars’ Muhammad Gambo

East Bengal have withdrawn their offer for Kano Pillar FC striker Muhammad Gambo due to a delay in the issuance of the player’s Professional Employment Visa. On August 19, the club had announced that they have reached an agreement with the 30-year-old Nigerian international. The official statement from the club read, “Quess East Bengal FC (QEBFC) today announced the withdrawal of its offer to Nigerian international footballer and prolific striker, Gambo Muhammad, due to prolonged delay in the issuance

of his Professional Employment VISA as per procedures of the Indian Embassy in Nigeria. This decision has been taken keeping the best interests of Quess East Bengal FC fans and supporters in mind. Earlier this week, Gambo Muhammad was signed by QEBFC for the 2018-19 football season.” The Red and Golds had made their acquisition of Gambo public last week but when contacted by newsmen, the player had a different story to tell. The 2013 Confederations Cup player even claimed that the visa issue cited by East Bengal had no truth to it.

”I am okay in the Nigerian league and (I am) not considering the Indian league after consulting with my family. I never signed any contract with East Bengal and the visa issue is not true,” Gambo said.. Kano Pillars FC chairman Tukur Babangida told Goal that the club is not aware of Gambo’s whereabouts and that he still has a contract with the club. Babangida said, “Well, I don’t know his whereabouts, Kano Pillars are not aware of his move before he has finished his contract with us. We wish him all the best.”

Super Eagles open camp for AFCON qualifier September 1 in Abuja The Super Eagles will open training camp on September 1 ahead of a 2019 AFCON qualifier in Seychelles, according to officials. Nigeria will fly out from Abuja to Seychelles for the game. Seychelles will host the Eagles on September

8 in continuation of the qualifying tournament for 2019 AFCON in Cameroon. Rohr will announce his squad for the match in the new week, officials also said. It will be the first match for the national team since they crashed out in the group stage of the 2018 World Cup in Russia in June.

Both Nigeria and Seychelles are without points after they lost their opening qualifiers. The Eagles lost 2-0 at home to South Africa, while Libya pounded Seychelles 5-1 at home. The top two teams in this group will qualify for next year’s expanded AFCON.

D’Tigress forward Evelyn Akhator joins Besiktas on one-year deal D’Tigress forward Evelyn Akhator has joined Besiktas Women’s Basketball Team. The Dallas Wings NBA draft signed a one year deal with Besiktas according to the official website of the club. Akhator is currently with the D’Tigress squad in Atlanta, USA preparing for the 2018 FIBA Women’s World Cup in Tenerife, Spain which will hold from September 22 to 30. She last played for Russia’s Dynamo Novosibirsk where she averaged 12.4 points and 8.5 rebounds per game. The 23 year old was drafted by the Dallas Wings as the third overall pick in the 2017 WNBA Draft. Akhator, a graduate from Kentucky University in 2017 also played in 34 games for the school during the 2016-2017 season averaging 15.8 points, 10.9 rebounds and 1.4 assists per game.

Brighton & Hove Albion defender Leon Balogun believes that the Seagulls have set the standard for their performances in the 2018/19 campaign with Sunday’s win over Manchester United at the Amex Stadium. Three first-half goals from Glenn Murray, Shane Duffy and Pascal Gross were enough to see Chris Hughton’s side record their first league win of the season. The Nigeria international emphasises that Albion must now maintain the levels they reached in the victory over Jose Mourinho’s men. “It’s an amazing way to get our

first win of the season – we’ve set the bar really high now, and we showed a great reaction from the Watford defeat,” Balogun told the club’s official website. “This is the level we always want to achieve consistently, and it was a great afternoon for me. “It’s too early to make predictions, we’ve had one good game and one bad game and still have some aspects to improve – it’s about consistency and if we can perform like we have on Sunday, then it will be a strong season.” The former FSV Mainz defender made his Premier League debut when

he came on for Lewis Dunk during the first half of the match against United, but he insists that it was easy for him to adapt in his debut in English football.

UEFA wants VAR in Champions League UEFA has confirmed it is looking into using VAR in the Champions League. European football’s governing body is using trials to find out if it can overcome logistical problems that it fears may impede usage. “UEFA is constantly looking at ways in which it can improve its competitions and we are looking closely at the implementation of video assistant referees that are currently being trialled in various competitions,” an official statement read. “We still see several uncertainties regarding the implementation of VAR and we think it is extremely important that the

scope of application, interpretation and technological support are clear to all – including spectators – and fully proven. “The implementation of VAR on a European scale presents a number of difficulties in the operational, logistical and refereeing areas. Any decision in this respect would require careful assessment of the available solutions and resources needed.” It has been reported that one solution could be to use VAR from the quarter-final stage of the Champions League to avoid having to commit manpower to eight group matches on the same night.

Serena Williams was the highest paid female athlete for a third consecutive year in 2018, according to an annual list published by Forbes on Tuesday that was dominated by tennis players. Williams, who returned to competition in March after giving birth last September, earned $62,000 in winnings over the past year but received $18.1 million from an endorsement portfolio unmatched among women in sports, Forbes said. Williams, who will try to equal Margaret Court’s record of 24 grand slam titles when she competes at the Aug. 27Sept. 9 U.S. Open in New York, earned twice as much off the court as any other female athlete,

according to Forbes. Dane Caroline Wozniacki, who captured her maiden grand slam title at this year’s Australian Open, was second on the list with combined earnings of ($13 million) while reigning U.S. Open champion Sloane Stephens ($11.2 million) was third. Spaniard Garbine Muguruza ($11 million) and Russian Maria Sharapova ($10.5 million) rounded out the top five. Indian badminton player P.V. Sindhu ($8.5 million) and retired race car driver Danica Patrick ($7.5 million) were the only nontennis players to crack the top 10, filling up the seventh and ninth spots, respectively. In June, Forbes issued a ranking of the world’s 100 highest-paid

athletes and it did not feature a woman. Serena Williams, who was the only woman on the list the previous year, dropped out of the chart while taking time off to have a baby.

Serena Williams No. 17 seed for US Open Serena Williams has been seeded 17th at the U.S. Open, nine spots higher than her WTA ranking as she returns from childbirth. The rest of the women’s and men’s singles seeds follow WTA and ATP rankings. Williams is seeded one spot below older sister Venus, a two-time U.S. Open winner. Williams goes for her seventh U.S. Open title beginning next week. She eyes her 24th Grand Slam singles title overall, which would tie Margaret Court‘s record. Williams returned to the WTA Tour in March after Sept. 1 childbirth followed by multiple surgeries. She made the fourth round of the French Open in May

and June before withdrawing with a pectoral muscle injury. She then reached the Wimbledon final, losing in straight sets to German Angelique Kerber. Williams has lost two of her three matches since Wimbledon in U.S. hard-court tournaments. The French Open did not give Williams a seed when she was ranked No. 453 due to the maternity leave. Wimbledon seeded Williams 25th when she was ranked No. 183. The U.S. Open would “revise the seedings if pregnancy is a factor in the current rankings of a player,” USTA president and chairwoman Katrina Adams said in June, according to The New York Times.

Cristiano Ronaldo has laughed off the assertion that he is “obsessed” by fashion but he does pay attention to the little details that can make him look better. The Portugal superstar, who signed for Juventus this summer from Real Madrid, has various clothing brands covering everything from underwear to denim, but though he says that small details are important, he is not overly concerned by how he looks.

Speaking on his unveiling as DAZN’s Global Ambassador, he was asked if he especially likes to get dressed up for big events. “Not really. I don’t believe I’m obsessed by looking good. I look good because I am,” the 33-year-old said, laughing, before adding, “I’m joking!” “I think everything’s important to look good, to smell good. You know, it’s not just women. “The ladies like to see you dressed

Mohammed Sanusi: Cristiano Ronaldo: I look good because I am NFF to discuss with Victor Moses over retirement well – my girlfriend likes it, my mum, my sisters, everyone around me likes seeing people smartly dressed. “Men or women, it’s part of our culture. So it’s good. It’s not an obsession, but a detail here or a detail there makes the difference in my opinion.” Ronaldo, meanwhile, admitted that Juventus’ fans played a huge part in luring him to Turin after nine years in the Spanish capital, where he enjoyed Champions League success on four occasions. It was an overhead kick against the Serie A champions that acted as a catalyst for him to move to Italy in the summer, with the five-time Ballon d’Or winner impressed by how his strike was greeted by the Juve fans. Furthermore, he also lifted the lid on his hopes that his son, Cristiano Jr., might one day follow in his footsteps and become a professional footballer . “He has a good body, he’s fast, he has skills, he can shoot, but as you know he’s going to make his decision and he’s so young, I’m not going to pressure him. But that is of course a dream, to see my boy a football player,” he admitted. Ronaldo made his competitive debut for Juventus in a Serie A clash with Chievo last Saturday, in which his side claimed a dramatic 3-2 success.

AFCON Qualifiers: Gernot Rohr set to unveil Super Eagles’ list The Nigeria national team, the Super Eagles, are set for action again after their not too impressive campaign at the last World Cup in Russia. Officials confirmed to thenff.com that Coach Gernot Rohr will on Friday this week release his list of invited players for the Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON qualifiers away to Seychelles. Nigeria will play away to Seychelles in Victoria on Matchday 2 of the qualifying series on September 7, before they entertain Libya’s Mediterranean Knights in Nigeria on Matchday 3 in the second week of October. Already, reports suggest that as much as eight players that made it to Russia for the World Cup will

be overlooked in Friday’s list to be released by Rohr. Top on the list of omissions will be Victor Moses who recently announced his retirement from the national team to squarely face his club career and young family. With an eye already on the game against Libya which Nigeria will be playing at home, the Super Eagles’ Technical Adviser on Wednesday inspected the newly renovated Ahmadu Bello Stadium, Kaduna. The Franco-German tactician checked out the facilities at the Ahmadu Bello Stadium in company of NFF’s 2nd Vice President, Shehu Dikko, and Super Eagles’ Team Administrator, Dayo Achor. The Super Eagles have played a couple of matches in Kaduna and the

crowd at their games have been quite impressive. It was, however, gathered that the recently completed Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba, Delta State is also being considered for the Eagles. After hosting Libya on October 10, Nigeria, three-time African champions, will play away to the Knights three days later, before flying to South Africa for the return against the Bafana Bafana on November 17. The last match of the series will see the Eagles hosting Seychelles on March 22, 2019. In the opener to the series in June 2017, the Eagles lost 0-2 to the Bafana Bafana in Uyo. The 32nd Africa Cup of Nations is scheduled to be staged in Cameroon next year summer.

The Secretary-General of Nigeria Football Federation, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi, has commended the federal government for the timely intervention on FIFA ban which would have adversely affected millions of youths and age grade competitions. Sanusi said, football is a unifying factor which will not be put on hold while we wait for the amicable resolution of the crisis. The head of NFF Secretariat said the Federation will ensure adequate preparations for the national U-17 team (Golden Eaglets) and the Super Eagles for the Africa Nations Cup qualifier against Seychelles next month “All the Federation is doing now is to prepare our national teams for competitions. We have two qualifiers, the Super Eagles in Seychelles, and Golden Eaglets in

Benin Republic. “Also we have Africa Women Cup of Nations billed for Ghana in November. “What the federation is doing now is to ensure that Nigeria qualifies for all competitions and perform well,” said Sanusi. The former head of competitions revealed that the Super Eagles boss Gernot Rohr has been directed to make himself available in preparation for the qualifier against Seychelles. He said the Eagle’s handler has been in contact with players he intends to use for the game. On the exit of Victor Moses from the national team, Sanusi said “the football house is talking with him to find out the reason and if possible convince him to rescind his decision for the sake of the country” and the youth who look up to him.

Manchester United share prices reach record high on NYSE Manchester United may be struggling to meet their demands on the pitch but off it, things simply could not be better as the club’s share price reached a record high on Tuesday. United were beaten 3-2 by Brighton on Sunday, with Paul Pogba claiming afterwards that his attitude was not right. The result led to intense debate over who is to blame for the issues plighting the club. Yet, the following day, the Old Trafford club showed that the problems are restricted only to the field of play as they were trading at $24.20 (£18.75) on the New York Stock Exchange, with the share price at $23.10 (£17.90) by close on Tuesday. That is up 40 percent from a year ago, when the price closed at $16.50. The fiscal 2018 results, which should be announced in September, are expected to show the revenue will have been between £575m and £585m

in their third-quarter results. United set record revenues of £581.2m in 2017, following the £515.3m made in 2016.
