Kogi APC state executive deny endorsing Bello Tunde Opalana, Abuja

Members of the Kogi state executive committee of the All Progressives Congress (APC) have denied social media reports that they have endorsed the state Governor, Yahaya Bello for a second term in office The executive committee members however, reiterated their call that the governor should pay their allowances and emoluments in the last three and half years. Addressing the press in Abuja on Sunday, the APC state Secretary in Kogi state, Salam Tom Adejoh said it was true that a meeting was held between the state executive committee members and the governor in Abuja on Saturday night, declaring that the executive committee never endorsed Gov. Bello. Adejoh said the state executive committee members have no personal grudges with the governor, but that there exist differences on the running of the state and the performance of the APC in the state.

The secretary said they demanded from the governor full payment of their allowances and emoluments for 42 months still pending with the state government, adding that the governor on his part promised full payment of the allowances and emoluments on the condition that the state executive withdraws the case it filed in court. “Contrary to news on the social media that we endorsed Governor Yahaya Bello, we never and has not endorsed the governor or any other person at that. “The meeting we held with the governor was to iron out issues in the state APC. We demanded that payment of our allowances and emoluments. We worked for the party in 2015 and we deserved allowances as members of the state executive committee,” Adejoh said. On their preference on who emerges the APC candidate for the November 16 governorship election in the state, he said it is not the duty of the executive committee to endorse candidates, but

to provide a level playing ground for all aspirants to test their popularity at the party’s primary in August. He also said that traditional rulers in the state do not have the powers to endorse Bello, adding that the royal fathers can give their opinions, but will not participate in the party’s primary. “The party has criteria for fielding candidates and more so, primary election will be conducted for all interested persons. So, the issue of candidate should be left for the party. “But, honestly speaking, if you are not a Kogite, you are a Nigerian. If someone is a performer, you will know. And anybody who thinks he is qualified, he should present himself to the people for screening. “While we are not against his interest to contest the party’s ticket, we need to put it on record that Gov. Yahaya Bello has been far away from the executive. He has neglected the direction of the party,” the party scribe added.

Short News Buhari orders probe into Rivers gas pipeline tragedy President Muhammadu Buhari has ordered for a thorough investigation to determine what was responsible for the gas pipeline explosion tragedy in Oyibo Local Government Area of Rivers state in which several fatalities was reported. President Buhari said he was extremely pained by the loss of lives as a result of the incident and condoled with the people and government of Rivers state over tragedy. The President in a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu in Abuja on Saturday, also condoled with the families of the victims. The gas tragedy reportedly occurred at Kom Kom community of Oyibo Local Government Area on Saturday when workers were fixing a faulty section of the gas pipeline.

CSO lauds stakeholders on 2019 hajj fare reduction

Independent Hajj Reporters, a civil society organisation that monitors and reports hajj and umrah activities has lauded Nigerian hajj stakeholders for the reduction of over N50, 000 from the 2019 hajj fare across all states. The organization made the commendation in a statement signed by its National Coordinator, Ibrahim Muhammed and Publicity Secretary, Abubakar Mahmoud respectively, in Abuja. The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) on Saturday in a statement by its Head of Public Affairs, Mrs. Fatima Usara, announced a reduction of 620 Saudi Riyals, equivalent to N51, 170.45 on this year’s fare. The commission said the reduction was as a result of the reclassification of land transportation routes to be used by Nigerian pilgrims during the hajj and directed all states, the FCT and the armed forces to immediately refund the amount to all intending pilgrims who made full payment. Commenting on the development, the civil society group said with the reduction on the fare, Nigerian pilgrims were actually paying N1.2 million for services they would enjoy throughout the 30 to 35 days hajj period. “Analysis of the 2019 hajj fare shows that each pilgrim will receive the sum of $800 (an equivalent of N244, 000) as basic travelling allowance, the initial N1.5 million paid in some states. “This is coming at a time other countries are crying over increase in their fares, citing a rise in transportation costs. We commend the foresight of the leadership of NAHCON and state pilgrims’ boards for coming with this financial relief for intending pilgrims.

NAF debunks social media report of ‘dropping weapons’ in Enugu community Moses Oyediran, Enugu The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) says that recent social media reports alleging that its training helicopters are dropping weapons in Akwuke Forest in Enugu state was false and lies told by mischief-makers. Acting Command Public Relations and Information Officer of headquarters NAF Ground Training Command, Enugu, Flight Lieutenant Faith Aigbeoghain, in a statement on Sunday in Enugu debunked the social media falsehood. Aigbeoghain said: “The attention of headquarters Ground Training Command of Nigerian Air Force (NAF), Enugu has been drawn to a social media and online story being circulated by some mischievous and misguided elements. ``The mischievous elements purport that NAF helicopters were being used to drop weapons for Fulani herdsmen in the forest area of Akwuke Community in Enugu South Local Government Area in Enugu state. ``The report alleged that helicopters had been seen on several occasions flying at low level and landing in the forest area to discharge their packages.’’ According to her, the headquarters of Ground Training Command wishes to state that the report is deliberately misleading and obviously, concocted by the writer to cause disaffection and incite negative divisive emotions among Nigerians. She further explained that it must

be noted that NAF has two helicopter training institutions under its purview which have been operating in Enugu for several years. These are the International Helicopter Flying School and 405 Helicopter Combat Training Group whose training curricula include low level flying around the forest areas near Akukwe, which is one of their designated training areas. ``In particular, the 405 Helicopter Combat Training Group commenced tactical training on the newly acquired 109 Power helicopters on May 24, 2019, which includes low level flying as well as other manoeuvres requiring them to land and take off within the training area. ``However, at no time was any NAF helicopter used to drop any materials, let alone deliver weapons to any individual or group. Members of the public, especially residents of Enugu state are therefore, advised to discountenance the fake report and go about their normal activities without fear,’’ she said. The NAF command spokesperson said that NAF, as a professional fighting force, remains resolute in performing its constitutional role of defending the territorial integrity of a united Nigeria. ``Accordingly, we shall continue to work assiduously, in synergy with sister services and other security agencies, to rid the country of all criminal elements in order to enable all Nigerians pursue their legitimate aspirations,’’ she added.

Buhari’s cabinet: To be or not to be?

“It will take the next two months before ministers can come on board. Bringing them in now may disrupt the clean-up going on. So, Nigerians just have to be patient.” This was Garba Shehu, presidential spokesman, speaking to Reuters on July 1, 2015 on the hold-up in appointing ministers. He said the president was taking his time to assemble a team of “credible and competent” Nigerians. But after six months of suspense and wearisome wait, some persons of blemished character and of inchoate competence still got hoisted into the cabinet. What a pathosinducing denouement that was? As a matter of fact, reinforcing failure is solving a problem with the same washed-out tools, methods and liveware. A president is as good as his cabinet; this is the reason competence must supersede every other value item in the check-list. It has been 26 days since the inauguration of the second Buhari administration, and it is shaping up to be the sophomore of a prosaic interlude charged with a numbing suspense. Really, I think this uneasy wait could be the result of intense lobbying in “high places” or a consequence of ambivalence in making that important decision of appointing persons to the cabinet by President Buhari. And there is the

speculation that most of the “arid hands” may return because they are angling and sparing no quarter in scheming to have another round at retailed power. In an essay entitled, ‘Mr.. President, may we discuss your cabinet?’ Simon Kolawole delivered an incisive piece of protest when he said: “Mr President, I will now be straightforward: if you retain certain ministers, I will finally give up on your government. I have seen enough reasons to lose faith but there is this never-say-die spirit that keeps me hoping even when it does not make sense. That is in my DNA. I have, however, been gravely worried that most of the ministers have been saying quietly that they are returning. In fact, I am told more than half of your cabinet will be re-appointed. I hope this is a joke, Mr. President. Tell me it’s a joke, Mr President. Assure me, Mr President, that this is a joke. This is a cabinet you should have dissolved years ago! How on earth would they be retained? Say it ain’t so, Mr President.” With due attribution, I so declare: “I will finally give up on Buhari, if certain former political ‘appointees’ return.” The truth is, loyalty is not a strong point for outsourcing critical ministries or offices to loudly incompetent persons. This was the intended experiment with Adebayo Shittu, minister of communications. He is, perhaps, the most tragic misfit to have

headed that ministry. And it is not that the president lacks a pool of human resources to make his pick from within or outside his party. But the Nigerian brand of politics of cronyism, loyalty and patronage blights credible choices. To say the least, I am not oblivious of the achievements of some officials in the administration. I know that there have been genuine reforms at some agencies. At PTAD, I know, Sharon Ikeazor, executive secretary of the agency introduced the Anti-corruption Transparency Unit to purge the agency of institutional corruption; I know she created a database for pensioners, jettisoning the antiquated and cumbersome filing process; yanked off more than 24,000 ghost pensioners from the system, saving about N495 million monthly for the government. But would it not be fantastic if we had a female Secretary to the Government of the Federation? What is to be said for gender inclusion? At NEITI, I know there have been reforms. I know there is a push to establish public registers of beneficial owners (real owners) of oil, gas and mining companies which operate in the country by 2020. Already, there is a published roadmap on beneficial ownership disclosure which provides clear definition of who beneficial owners are. The essence of this is to bring

transparency and accountability into the extractive industry. What better way to fight corruption in the opaque sector? Also, the man leading this charge at NEITI, Mr Waziri Adio, is a public officer who is known to have shrunk the appurtenances of office off his own bat. At the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), the integrity of data has remained untainted. I remember a few months to the 2019 election; the NBS published some unemployment figures which were unfavourable to the government. Really, it takes special courage to hold up the end of non-compromise in this circumstance. Dr Yemi Kale, statistician-general, braved death threats to do his job. And there are many other Nigerians who have distinguished themselves in public service like Dr Joe Abah who initiated a series of pristine reforms while he was the director-general of the Bureau of Public Service Reforms. The talent pool in Nigeria is inexhaustible. But the committee of “political scouts” are comfortable with the optional familiar. President Buhari should imagine himself as the CEO of a blue-chip company. He must understand that competence is ultimate; it comes first, and that appointing career politicians to sensitive offices as he experimented in the time of “change” will not take us to the “Next Level” now.

Buratai’s bruises on Nigerian troops

Whether the Chief of Army Staff, General Tukur Buratai, failed to think through his statement last Tuesday condemning Nigerian military troops who are on the frontline of fighting the Boko Haram insurgency or he was just being magisterial like all bosses do, the import and symbolism of that waffling condemnation, it will seem, are far too fatal than he probably can guess. His allegation against the hapless soldiers, shunned of hyperboles, is treason. At the opening ceremony of a workshop tagged “Transformational leadership” which was organized by the Army Headquarters Department of Transformation and Innovation, which held at the Army Resource Centre in Abuja, Buratai had said: “It is unfortunate, but the truth is that almost every setback the Nigerian Army has had in our operations in recent times can be traced to the insufficient willingness to perform assigned tasks or simply insufficient commitment to a common national/military course by those at the frontlines. Many of those on whom the responsibility for physical actions against the adversary squarely falls are yet to fully take ownership of our common national or service cause.” Buratai’s allegation has provoked critical discourses. Broken down to its basest ingredients, the Lieutenant General was simply accusing his troops of treason. If anyone says that the claim by the Nigerian state, represented by its No 1 Army Commander, that the multiple killings of Nigerians in recent time by an apparently more coordinated, closely-knit and more forward-looking Boko Haram fighters, as well as the shrouded, yet loudly sounding sad news of the killing of hapless soldiers in the last couple of months, were as a result of “insufficient willingness” of the soldiers, isn’t an accusation of treason, then we may have to break open the Thesaurus to find its hidden semantics. Discourses on Buratai’s accusation and allegation have sought to look at the moral of the allegation from a boss to his subordinates, its intendment, purport and implication for us as Nigerian people. Let us begin from its fundament; that is, the purport and implication of the allegation. According to Part X11 of theNigerian Armed Forces Act, especially Section 45, 46, 47 and 48 which deal with misconduct of military personnel, there was an emphatic zeroing-in on offences that border on Buratai’s claim against

the troops. They are offences of aiding, communicating with the enemy, offences against morale and cowardly behavior of troops which, upon trial by courts-martial, could earn culprits sentences that range from death, life imprisonment and the like. Among these can be found the offence of “insufficient willingness” of soldiers.. Give it to him, before Buratai could volunteer this information to the public, there must have been a broken down attempt to rein in the incubus of disintegration among the troops. “Insufficient willingness” could be a symptom of several malaises, ranging from weariness to fight, disobedience to command, sagging morale, cowardly behavior, communicating with the enemy, among panoply of other tendencies. The truth is that, the Nigerian Army has attempted severally to keep the lid tight on putrid oozes from its operations in the last few years but it would be shocked that the smelly information is available everywhere, even at bus stops. Like every sector of the Nigerian economy, the Nigerian Army too is suffocating under very atrocious jackboots of corruption. Billions of Naira that are voted for purchase of equipment and fighting of the enemy are scooped inside the filthy arms of Generals and their surrogates in crime; the defence establishment grows rotund tummies each time such budgetary allocations are made and, like Eddie Iroh said in his Toads of War, the Generals suddenly acquire the bellies of toads, at the expense of soldiers daily killed by Boko Haram. Allocations for the upkeep of the suffering and hapless loyal troops are filched by these heartless species of nature’s creation and they vicariously kill these boys who are sent to the frontline literally barehanded. The scamper for the cash of military budgets is so huge that many of the characters named above have acquired the heartlessness of the dragon, at the expense of the loyal fighting troops. It is thus no wonder that the enemy, in this case Boko Haram fighters, picks them from the cliff like the praying-mantis effortlessly harvests its ant prey. A window into the welfare of the troops was opened on Monday, April 29, 2019 when Dr. Sidi Mohammed, a member of the Presidential Committee on the North East Initiative (PCNI) claimed that fighters of the Boko Haram terrorist group get paid the sum of N1 million ($3000) on a daily basis while, on the other hand, Nigerian

troops earn a paltry sum of N1000 daily. Sidi was speaking at an International Monetary Fund (IMF) Sub-Sahara Africa’s Economic Outlook Report in Abuja. He made this assertion to complement the belief that enlistment into the Boko Haram insurgency family is such a lucrative business that would make recruitment into it a fait accompli, especially among youths in the North Eastern part of Nigeria that is ravaged by the pestilence of want, unemployment and despondency. Buratai is probably too engrossed in the voyeuristic fancy of Generals to realize that soldiers did not descend from Uranus and that they indeed have members of their families whom they communicate on their fates in the trenches. They tell horrible stories of neglect, abandonment and shabby treatment by the military establishment. Worse still is that, in deference to that inscrutable god of non-disclosure and national security, the military hide the casualty figure of our children, the loyal troops killed in action, from us. Some of them are buried in unmarked graves and the ones who are lucky enough are siphoned into military cemeteries at nocturnes for burial. The unpalatable news filtering in every now and then is that the figures are frighteningly alarming and are recently on the upswing. Generals who are vicariously responsible for their deaths smile to the bank to cash the bloody proceeds of their deaths. The unwritten intendment of the drafters of the Nigerian Armed Forces Act was not to forge, in the smithy of Army Barracks, a slavish band of yes-men soldiers who have no minds of their own. Or soldiers who would remain pliable in the face of obvious, superior officersmanufactured deaths that harvest them from the cliff, in droves and on a daily basis. How Buratai expects to forge a troop that is loyal, bendable and with “sufficient willingness” is curious, going by the Generals’ abetment of soldiers’ overrun by Boko Haram. A far worse implication of Buratai’s alarm is that we are all in danger as Nigerians. If we, as captives of the Nigerian state, are being “protected” by soldiers who do not have the “sufficient willingness”, we are all dead on arrival. Only God knows what would happen if some enemy forces bump in on us at the moment. No wonder President Muhammadu Buhari recently resorted to supplication to supernatural forces as

way out of the bind Nigerians have found themselves. While reacting to an attack last Sunday by suicide bombers,Buhari was quoted to have said that insurgents who unleashed the terror at a viewing centre in Mandarari, Konduga Local Government Area of Borno State, “would be punished by God.” Speaking through one of his media aides, he was said to have “decrie(d) the heinous acts, stressing that perpetrators of evil acts have judgment awaiting them, not only from man via the long arms of the law, but also from God Almighty.” About 30 persons were reportedly killed in the multiple bomb blasts and 40 others were said to have been mortally wounded. The truth is, if we count the number of the dead since Buhari assumed office in 2015, it should be near the casualty figure of the Nigerian civil war. Yet, he and his government said that the insurgents have been technically defeated. Zamfara, Sokoto, Kaduna States and even his Katsina home, have become hotspots of deaths from nefarious bandits at whose feet the supposedly powerful Nigerian state now grovelingly supplicates. Only on Friday, rampaging bandits killed 18 people in Zamfara and abducted its district head. But all is calm at the Villa; except that we should pray to God. People have asked if Buhari shouldn’t resign his office, so that Nigerians can totally, physically surrender Nigeria’s security to Him and His sovereignty while we start operating the papacy of the Holy See. Nigerians want an effective government that is capable of combating Boko Haram and would not take the lame and escapist scamper into the bosom of God to hide governmental ineptitude. Does Buratai’s “insufficient willingness” troop include the hapless thousands of soldiers who, so far, have laid their lives as supreme price in the hands of Boko Haram? Of a truth, in saner societies, Buratai should have tendered his letter of resignation after that unconscionable statement, for government to begin a diligent probe into the allegation, as well as the funding of the military in the last ten years or so. It is an indictment on the General’s ability; indeed, a naked surrender on account of incapability. But, this is Nigeria: a land where mediocrity rules; where the worst of us rule the best of us; where value qualification for the top is appetite for illicit wealth and acquisition, where redemption is very near, yet so distant, hidden in the unseen bowel of an unforeseeable future.

Editorial Commentary NEWS Police arrest 2 suspects for raping 11-yr-old girl in Bauchi Samuel Luka, Bauchi The Bauchi state Police Command has confirmed the arrest of two suspects who allegedly raped an 11- year- old teenage girl. Police Public Relations Officer, Bauchi state, Kamal Datti Abubakar, who confirmed the arrest to journalists in the state, said that the suspects, Bashar Haruna, 25 and a 55- year -old man, Isah Sule, allegedly raped the victim, whose name was simply given as Fatima, a primary four pupil at different occasions. He explained that the police received information of the alleged rape on June 16 and swung into action by successfully arresting the two suspects. “I can confirm to you that the incident is true. On June 16 at about 13:55pm, we received the information from a

complainant, one Abubakar Haruna, of Sabuwar Kasuwa area of Bauchi metropolis that on the said date at about 10am, he left his shop back to his house. “On reaching his house, he found out that his younger brother, Bashar Haruna, 25 and one Fatima, his niece, looking at each other suspiciously. Upon interviewing them, he discovered that the said Bashar sexually harassed or molested his niece, Fatima,” the police spokesman stated. Kamal said that upon receipt of the report, the police swung into action and arrested the said Bashar, adding that further investigation led to the arrest of a 55 -year -old, Isah Sule of Sabuwar Kasuwa, whom the girl claimed had also severally harassed her sexually. The police image -maker said that the case is under investigation after which the suspects will be charged to court.

Lagos starts clinical follow up, rehab of victims of building collapse Benjamin Omoike, Lagos The Lagos state government on Sunday said it has commenced a clinical follow-up and rehabilitation for victims of the Ita-Faaji building collapse in central Lagos. Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health, Dr. Titilayo Goncalves, said the follow-up was to ensure that victims of the unfortunate incident recovered fully. of the citizens. “As such, the government is providing this clinical follow-up and rehabilitation session to ensure good health for victims of this incident and help them recuperate. “The follow-up includes a mental health treatment for those who may have been traumatised by the incident. Mental health talk and support is being offered by our trained psychiatrists, grief counsellors and social workers. “This is because some of them, after such a traumatic incident, require mental health support to help them overcome their grief.” Also speaking, the Director, Medical Administration, Training and Programmes in the ministry, D.r Funmilayo Shokunbi said foodstuffs, school kits and other items would be provided to the victims to aid their process of recovery. Shokunbi said the items were donated by the state government, Oba of Lagos and other well-meaning individuals.

NGO inaugurates clinic for sickle cell patients The WarriorStory Initiative, an NGO, on Sunday, in Lagos, inaugurated a “WarriorStory Sickle Cell Clinic’’ for carriers. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the aim of the initiative was for sickle cell patients to have access to affordable, fast and reliable monthly check ups and first aid care. Ms Abimbola Ogunmekan, Founder and Coordinator of the NGO, told NAN that the clinic would afford carriers opportunity to meet with different consultants and specialists on the same day. “We decided to start the clinic, this month, to commemorate the World Sickle Cell Day which was on June 19. After today, we will be doing it monthly, most likely every last Saturday of the month. “We have about six consultants in the clinic and they will all see patients without any consultation fee for three months,” she said. According to her, the clinic will allow carriers to see consultants ranging from Surgical Units to Psychiatrist, Psychologist, and Haematologist among others on the same day. “I have been running this support group for about three years now. “It is observed that people self-medicate,

either because they don’t have enough money to go to the hospital or because they don’t want to go through the stress of hospital processes. “So I decided to talk to some of my bosses who are consultants in various fields at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, IdiAraba, that cater for sickle cell patients to come here, at least, once a month to see these patients. “They are all here today talking to them, letting them know how to care and manage their health; those who need referral are given and sent to the best specialists for further diagnosis and treatment,“ she said. Ogunmekan, urged carriers not to wait till they were faced with problems before they visit hospital for check-up. According to her, sickle cell patients are supposed to see their doctors at least twice a month. “You should see a doctor even when you are feeling fine.Go for random check so that if there is any issue coming up, it will be dictated and managed in good time.’’ She said at the end of the support programme, patients would be required to pay a token for subscription to access care.

FG, state police and matters arising The clamour for State Police has heightened in recent months mainly due to the inability of the regular police and other security agencies to deal squarely with the rising insecurity in the country. Recall that the call for an autonomous state’s police reached its peak early this month when the media misconstrued a mere directive of Mr. President to three man committee to study a report submitted to the presidency on Special Anti-Robbery Squad and produce a white paper, to mean the establishment of State Police. Far from it, though, the presidency has since clarified it statement as a merely setting up a committee, but the clamour for state police has not abated. In fact, until the lingering vexed issue of insecurity is properly addressed, we cannot wish away the creation of state police. So, as the nation awaits the report and a white paper of the findings of three man committee studying the report on reform of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), we sincerely urge the Federal Government to give deeper and favourable thoughts to the establishment of state police. We are aware that as it stands now, several impediments are on its way. First, is the lack of will power on the side of Federal Government to decentralise policing and give the states/ governors police’s inherent coercive powers for obvious political reasons. But can the vulnerable citizens of our nation remain prey to kidnapers, arms bandits, robbers, terrorists, assassins, rappers, thieves and victims of communal clashes forever, just for the simple reason that creating an establishment to address these unlawful activities will empower

political opponents?. Second, the states are ill-prepared to shoulder the responsibilities associated with the funding of an autonomous police, their rhetoric of “give us a state police” notwithstanding. Just fortnight ago, the Chairman of Governors’ Forum, Gov. Fayemi of Ekiti State, made it clear that the state governments are financially constrained to fund state police, adding that some are financially handicapped to pay workers salaries. If really that is the position, the country must seek alternative source of funding for the State Police. We believe that the Police Trust Fund Bill which received the approval of the Senate of the 8th National Assembly in April this year, can be revisited by 9th National Assembly at least to expound its scope to include funding for state police. Importantly, we must amend the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended) and remove policing from exclusive list. It is also important to address its funding and control. These are essential because the tasks before the Nigeria Police are enormous. Presently, the military are engaged in police duties in almost all the 36 states of the federation. The implications are not only telling on the military’s core duty but militarising the society will take decades of sustained efforts to correct. We therefore plead with the Ojukwu review panel to make haste and submit it report within three months time frame and set the stage for the establishment of state police by states that not only desire it but can operate and fund it in line with constitutional safeguards to avoid misuse.

National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Prince Uche Secondus has said that the fear of insecurity and intimidation of judges raised by the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) vindicates the PDP’s position that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is using devious means to obstruct justice from coming out from the nation’s courts. The NBA through its President, Paul Usoro (SAN) in a speech last Thursday, alerted the nation by saying that “the level of insecurity in the country and the attack on the independence of the judiciary, and the legal profession constitute a threat to the rule of law and by extension the country’s democracy.” Usoro said that the climate of fear being instilled by the federal government undermines the independence of the judiciary and the ability of judges to act confidently without fear or favour in dispensing justice as they are threatened, intimidated and blackmailed by mostly the executive arm of government and their agencies

at federal and state levels. According to Secondus in a statement from his media office, the NBA’s alarm merely confirms the position of the PDP that the APC administration is shrinking the doctrine of separation of powers to enable a full blown dictatorship blossom. He stated that judges by their calling cannot speak out publicly even if they are under pains except through the bar as has been eloquently and timely done by the bar association, adding that all democratic watchers should note the cureent trend with concern. The PDP, the national chairman said has continuously raised alarm at the gradual erosion of the doctrines of separation of powers by the APC administration as the nation watch helplessly as the executive continues to muzzle the other arms of government, including even the press. Secondus added that the opposition has remained resolute in crying out loud against the harassment of those with opposing views because it clearly envisages the danger of overconcentration of powers in one hand especially, with a leader who has no history of appreciating

and respecting democratic tenets and principles. The PDP national chairman however, expressed the hope that even in the face of harassment and intimidation, the Nigeria judiciary knowing their critical position in the sustenance of democracy in the land and being citizens who are resident in the country, know that the judiciary is the last hope of the ordinary people and that no nation grows on injustice. Meanwhile, Secondus has condoled with the people of Kom Kom in Oyigbo Local Government Area of Rivers state who lost their lives in the gas pipeline explosion that killed dozens of citizens when Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) were carrying out routine maintenance of the facility in the area. “Our hearts are with you at this trying time,” Prince Secondus said while lamenting the incessant hazard the people of the Niger Delta region face due to the neglect and insensitivity of the federal government to listen to the cries of the people. He also commiserated with victims of the killings in Zamfara and other states in North West and the North East zones.

Ikpeazu to create 700,000 new jobs to address insecurity in Abia

Governor Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia state has revealed that 700, 000 new jobs will be created in the state in the next 10 years as part of deliberate efforts to address the challenges of insecurity and socioeconomic unrest. The governor revealed this when he fielded questions from State House correspondents on Sunday in Abuja. He identified the decay in education as well as the rising unemployment rate across the country as a time bomb that must be addressed by all tiers of government and the private sector. His administration, the governor said has keyed into the federal government’s plan of addressing the problem of youth unemployment through its Enyimba Economic City project. “I want to say this to all of us that by 2030 the population of Nigeria would double. So the ticking timing bomb is not the decay in infrastructure. The time bomb is education and unemployment and it speaks to everything including crime. “So, in Abia we are planning to create

700, 000 jobs in 10 years. Certainly, I will not be governor in the next 10 years, but we are planning ahead for the good people of Abia state that will come tomorrow or after us. “And until we continue to plan or begin to plan ahead not for the next election, but for the next generation we will not be able to do anything futuristic in our socio-economic development in Nigeria,” Ikpeazu added. The governor expressed satisfaction with the pace of work at the Enyimba Economic, saying that “we are happy and glad that the enthusiasm of investors outside Nigeria is overwhelming. So, our target is to create 700, 000 jobs in 10 years and to also create a centre from where people can manufacture and export without paying anything.” Also, Ikpeazu revealed that his administration is upgrading and modernising the Abia Shoe Factory with the latest shoe making equipment and facilities to meet international specifications. “We want our shoemakers to begin to compete with the best shoemakers in

the world and it will happen; there is a Brazilian shoe factory already that has taken stock of the quantity of shoes that we bought through Alaba (market) into Nigeria on monthly basis and they are prepared to reach a memorandum of understanding with importers to supply all those shoes. “So, we are going to give the Chinese a good run for their money because the option we are providing includes shoes from Brazil,” he enthused. He further disclosed that the state government has embarked on the massive construction and rehabilitation of roads in the state as the state’s economy largely, depends on the influx of over 25 million people into the state annually. “We have a catchment business population of about 25 million that come to do business within Abia state, 60 per cent of the people come from the Port Harcourt axis, 30 per cent from Calabar – Akwa Ibom axis and the remaining 10 per cent from everywhere, including Cameroun and other parts of Nigeria,” he boasted.

President Muhammadu Buhari has commiserated with the government and people of Zamfara state on the recent infiltration of bandits, who killed several innocent citizens in Tsafe Local Government Area of the state. In a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu in Abuja on Sunday, Buhari condemned the incident, describing the attacks as ”callous and despicable”. He assured the people of Zamfara state and other Nigerians who had lost loved ones to violent attacks that the government under his watch would soon bring such dastardly acts to an end. The President commended the new administration in the state for putting in new security measures to curtail the activities of criminals and bandits, urging it not to despair but to see the latest attack as a challenge to step up collective actions to rout the enemy in partnership with the federal government. While urging law enforcement agencies to take prompt and timely action against the wicked attackers, Buhari appealed to citizens to have faith in the security agencies by giving them useful information on plans and movements of the bandits.

Prelate seeks life imprisonment for kidnap suspects

Prelate of the Methodist Church Nigeria, His Eminence Samuel Kanu has called for life imprisonment for persons found culpable for kidnapping in the country. Kanu made the call while addressing newsmen on the sidelines of the honorific awards of knights to members of the church on Sunday in Abuja. “For those who kidnap and those who perpetuate evil for me, they should be jailed for life because they are enemies of the society. I will not subscribe to death penalty,“ he said. The prelate called for increased funding for the security agencies to effectively carry out their responsibilities, adding that the funds should be monitored to avoid diversion by corrupt officials. Kanu said that President Muhammadu Buhari has good intentions for the country, but some individuals within the government have decided to use the funds for other purposes, alleging that some disgruntled elements were also behind all the kidnappings being carried out across the country. He expressed concern over the level of prosecution and conviction persons arrested for kidnappings and other violent crimes by security agencies in the country, complaining that the lack of diligent prosecution has often than not left those arrested for the crimes off the hook. He enjoined Nigerians to join hands in the fight against insecurity as the security agencies cannot do it alone and advised President Buhari to use the next four years to focus on massive food production, youth empowerment and the economy to enhance the living standards of Nigerians. The award of Knight of John Wesley was given to 36 members of the church and Knight of Charles Wesley to three members of the church. Other awards given were that of the officers of the Order of Wesley to eight members and members of the Order of Wesley to six members. Kanu said that the award was a motivation for the members to do more for the church and not a retirement incentive and urged members to invest more in the church.

NCWS solicits support for indigent widows, widowers

The National Council of Women Societies (NCWS) on Sunday solicited the support of wealthy Nigerians to uplift indigent widows and widowers in Nigeria. National President of NCWS, Mrs. Gloria Shoda, who made the appeal in Abuja, enjoined comfortable people to assist widows and widowers in the country, especially the indigent among them to better their lives. “As we mark the 2019 International Widows`Day, multinationals, wealthy people in the society should give helping hands to the widows. We know that government alone cannot assist the widows and widowers, so I am calling on everyone to do the little that they can to help elevate their suffering. “The council is involved in training and retraining of widows in different skills and we also ensure that they get soft loans to establish and sustain their businesses. “We want to touch more widows, that is why as a council, we call on people to gather the widows and train them on skills that will better their lives and that of their children. “We also have widows that are comfortable and have been helping other widows. I congratulate them and urge them to continue in the good work, she said. The International Widows` Day is a global awareness day observed on June 23 annually. The Day was launched by the United Nations in 2010 to raise awareness of the violation of human rights that widows suffer in many countries following the death of their spouses.

Another media aide to Senate president resigns Tunde Opalana, Abuja

The President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan may be under intense pressure over the appointments he has made so far as another of his appointees, Olu Onemola, the special assistant on new media has resigned his appointment. Onemola’s resignation was made known on Sunday in a statement by the Special Assistant to the Senate President on Media and Publicity, Mohammed Isa. The resignation, according to the statement is contained in a letter addressed to the Senate President. Onemola in the letter thanked Sen. Lawan for the offer to continue to serve and promote the work of the 9th Senate. He said the appointment “is borne out your patriotic desire to serve the Nigerian people. However, at this time, given my

antecedents and the controversy this has generated, I would respectfully like to be excused from taking up this national assignment. “It is my hope that whoever does fill this role will build upon what we have started in terms of opening up the activities of the Nigerian Senate to the public.” His resignation was personal, but it could not be unrelated to the intense pressure on the Senate president for appointing people considered not to be friends of the Buhari administration. Recall that Onemola alongside two other media aides who served the immediate past Senate President, Bukola Saraki were last Wednesday retained by the incumbent, but their appointments has not gone down well with people close to the Presidency. The hardliners in the Presidency argued that having Saraki’s former

aides in his office might be a risk to the workings of the 9th Senate while others were of the opinion that people loyal to the APC should be compensated with such appointments. Lawan was knocked first for appointing as his Special Adviser Media and Publicity, Dr. Festus Adedayo, a journalist not known to the APC media circle. Adedayo’s appointment was rescinded 24 hours after. The Daily Times gathered that aside from Onemola, other former aides of Saraki appointed by Lawan may exit their positions soon, as they may not be comfortable working with the Senate President. It was further learnt that the situation may have put Lawan in a precarious situation of having his future appointments subjected to scrutiny by the Presidency.

Short News Ogun police arrest 2 ATM robbers in Ota Chioma Joseph, Lagos The Ogun state Police Command has arrested two members of a syndicate that specialises in robbing bank customers of their cash withdrawals from ATM points. The suspects, Ebenezer Olubukola, 30 and Olajide Oladejo, 29 were arrested at Ota area of the state. The gang met their waterloo after they had positioned themselves close to a First Bank ATM waiting to strike. Ogun state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Abimbola Oyeyemi, said policemen on routine patrol led by the area commander, Ota, intercepted their operation. The PPRO said “Men of the Ogun state Police Command arrested two suspected members of a syndicate who specializes in robbing people of money withdrawn from ATM machines. Their mode of operation is to lurk around banks observing those who will withdraw substantial amounts of money and trace such person with their standby motorcycle to a convenient area for them to rob him or her. “Luck however, ran against them when the Area Commander, Ota, Monday Agbonika, who was on routine patrol with the men of ‘Operation Puff Adder’ sighted the three men on a Bajaj motorcycle around the First Bank area in Ota. “The area commander who suspected their movement and outlook asked his men to intercept and search them.

A social crusader and public affairs analyst, Carl Umegboro, has admonished the members of the 9th National Assembly to demonstrate statesmanship while discharging legislative functions in the interests of the suffering masses in the country. Two suspects who had lured an Uber driver, Ekwomi Charles, into the bush, attempted to strangle him and made away with his Toyota Camry have been arrested by the operatives of Rapid Response Squad (RRS) in Lagos. The suspected car hijackers were arrested in Lekki, Lagos, while on their way to hand over the snatched car to a buyer, Emeka Okoye. It was learnt that the suspects, Daniel Alagor, 28, Samuel Effiong, 25 and three other suspects still at large had on the night of June 19 requested for the services of an Uber car through Alagor’s mobile phone. Supported by another gang member identified as Blessing (still at large), Alagor had told the Uber driver to take the duo to Abijo GRA from Jakande Estate, Lekki around 11:00 p.m. Mastermind of the plan, Alagor narrated that “almost midway into the trip, Blessing told the driver we were going to a birthday party at Shoprite, Sangotedo and that we were going to pick two of our colleagues up in Abijo GRA, Ajah. Narrating his ordeal, the Uber driver who narrowly escaped death said “I agreed to pick their friends and drop them at the venue of the party as we were already in Abijo GRA. “They called their friends and we agreed I move into the estate to meet them on their way. I drove about 100 meters and I didn’t encounter them. They eventually, came and immediately they entered the car, they tied a rope around my neck from the back. Then all of them started punching me till I passed out. “Thinking that I was dead, they took me into the bush and dropped my body near an uncompleted building. They left beside me a knife after tying me. Thank God, I woke up later. I reported at the closest police station and eventually, I learnt the police arrested them.” Investigations revealed that the suspects after presumably, killing the Uber driver left one of them in Abijo GRA while three of them Alagor, Blessing and another suspect, whose identity police are working on drove the car to Shoprite, Ijeshatedo to pick Samuel Effiong, who already had negotiated with Okoye.

Delta provides succour to 65 rainstorm victims Nosa Akenzua, Asaba

Sixty -five victims displaced by heavy rainstorm in Alifikede, near Agbor in Delta state were at the weekend provided with relief materials by the state government. The state government provided the materials to the affected victims through the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) offered the victims intervention packages and cash of N100, 000 each. Alifikede community among others in the state are currently being ravaged by rainstorm and erosion with several houses and properties destroyed. Addressing the victims, Secretary to the State Government, Chiedu Ebie, said that efforts were being made by the Okowa administration to support disaster victims across the state. He urged the beneficiaries to utilize the funds donated to them judiciously and appealed to them to exercise caution during adverse weather conditions. In his remarks, the Director of SEMA, Karo Ovemeso commended the state government for empathizing with the victims and assured them of his continued support at all times, especially during the flooding season.

June 23, 2018, suspected Fulani armed men invaded Gashish community and killed over 188 persons in cold blood, leading to residents fleeing their homes to various Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camps in Jos, the state capital. However, with the efforts of the military taskforce, some of the displaced persons have returned back to their ancestral homes. Reassuring them of their safety during a visit to the community, the military taskforce reaffirmed the command’s commitment in ensuring that the deadly attack of 2018 does not reoccur. “We are here to assure them that we are with them, we have intensified our information gathering mechanism using local sources to know what is going on within the society: we also have some roving teams and other means of tackling any insecurity that might occur to ensure that the fears and apprehension being nursed in

the past are eliminated,” Maj. Gen. Agundu said. Earlier, the Barkin-Ladi Local Government Chairman, Dickson Chollom, lauded the military taskforce for returning the IDP’s and restoring peace amongst the people. The Kwara state government says it will continue to be responsive and alert to all her commitments towards the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme in the state. The state Governor, Alhaji AbdulRahman Abdulrazaq stated this in his address delivered at the official opening and swearingin of 2019 batch ‘B’ stream 1 orientation course at the NYSC Orientation Camp, Yikpata, Edu Local Government Area of the state. Alhaji Abdulrasaq, who was represented by the Deputy Governor, Kayode Alabi said over the years, the NYSC scheme has provided the rallying point to mobilise highly resourceful Nigerian youth for the onerous task of nation building. The governor expressed gratitude to the federal government and the management of the NYSC scheme for the sustenance and continuity of the programme in its 46 years of existence. He acknowledged that the scheme has consistently proved its continuous relevance to the nation’s socio-economic development. Alhaji Abdulrazaq commended members of the corps for their roles during the 2019 general elections, saying that the inclusion of the patriotic corps members as ad-hoc personnel by INEC gave the electoral process the desired credibility and acceptance. The governor noted that the NYSC orientation course was carefully designed to instil discipline and a platform to physically, psychologically and socially prepare corps members for the rigorous task of nation building. He charged the Corps members not to allow frivolities to affect their commitment in achieving the qualities of future leaders which the programme is designed to prepare them for. Also speaking, the acting Chairman of the state NYSC Governing Board, Alhaji Shuaib Akanbi added that the three-week orientation programme was aimed at among others exposing the corps members to the rudiments of leadership and its responsibilities.

Pastor develops solar powered tricycle, seeks govt partnership Samuel Luka, Bauchi A Bauchi based clergyman, Pastor Paul Daniel has developed a solarpowered tricycle (Keke-NAPEP) to assist farmers transport their farm produce and in turn help in improving inter and intra -city transport at affordable cost. The pastor who is also a farmer in Tafawa Balewa Local Government Area of the state said he wants to partner with the Bauchi state government to allow him to train more youth in the business. According to him, with government’s support he can produce 10 to 20 machines in a day and may even develop a solar powered car. Speaking at the weekend in an interview, Pastor Daniel said “my effort is a breakthrough that if supported will help to open a good industry for the provision of solar powered tricycles without using fuel or gas which will help farmers to take their harvest home at cheaper rates and will help to boost farming activities as well as create job opportunities for the teeming unemployed youth.” He said the advantages of solar machines include the absence of noise and environmental pollution while it is easy to maintain. The clergyman who explained that the tricycle can easily be operated by using grease said grease is used to keep the machine working for three to four weeks at the cost of N200 or more. “It is cheap because you will not buy fuel and it needs little maintenance and its stronger than the tricycles using fuel,” he added.

ANSG inaugurates Maternal Newborn and Child Health week Stories by John Ndu, Awka Anambra State Government has inaugurated the first Round of 2019 Maternal Newborn and Child Health Week (MNCHW). The event took place at Primary Health Center, Egbu Umuenem, Otolo Nnewi, Nnewi North Local Government Area. It was started last Sunday and would last for six days in all the Primary Health Centres in the state. Inaugurating the programme, the Governor, Chief Willie Obiano reechoed that his administration would continue to provide necessary facilities that would promote health. The Governor stated that over two million people had been immunized

in the state since 2014, and would continue to provide logistics that would ensure wider coverage. Governor Obiano recalled that he had procured 21 speed boats and water ambulances to ensure rapid response to health challenges across riverine areas. “I urge religious leaders, traditional rulers and President Generals to continue creating awareness on the need for women to come out and get their children immunized. “Last year, Anambra came first in the immunization coverage. This was possible due to our investment in health. I will continue to promote health,” Governor Obiano added. On his part, Commissioner for Health, Dr. Vincent Okpala, said Child Health week was a biannual event aimed at delivering a package of basic

interventions that are highly effective in reducing child mortality while improving mother and child health. Dr. Okpala maintained that the programme was in conjunction with other routine services, aimed at reducing neonatal, maternal and child morbidity and mortality in the country. Also speaking, Executive Secretary and Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Anambra State Primary Health Care Development Agency, ASPHCDA, Dr. (Mrs.) Chioma Ezenyimulu, noted that Gov Obiano had invested huge amount in health. Dr. Ezenyimulu noted that Maternal Newborn and Child Health Week (MNCHW) was aimed at “contributing towards improving the health status of Nigerian women and children by increasing coverage of key

According to her, the intervention would include Nutrition Screening (Mid Upper Arm Circumference), vitamin A supplement, Birth registration, family planning. She explained that the commodities would be dispensed free of charge at all primary health centres. She called on all pregnant women in the state as well as care givers to bring out children, aged 6 months to 5 years, to the nearest primary health centres to receive these life saving commodities.

Anambra State Ministry of Women and Children Affairs has organised an interactive session with selected Cooperative Societies registered under the ministry. The meeting held at the Prof. Dora Akunyili Women Development Centre, Awka, attracted various leaders of the Cooperatives. It was organised to instill knowledge-based skill to the registered cooperatives and intimate them on the policies and directives of the state government. Addressing the participants, Anambra State Commissioner for Women and Children Affairs, Lady Ndidi Mezue, harped on the need for the cooperative societies to support people in the grassroots to enable growth and betterment of Nigerians. She encouraged them to fully associate with the ministry, while initiating innovative programmes that would benefit their members. The event which took place at Anambra Broadcasting field Awka, attracted pupils, civil servants, parents and other members of the public. In her remark, wife of the Governor, Dr. Ebelechukwu Obiano, represented by the SSA on Donor Agency, Mrs. Mary Ogugua, said the day was observed to raise awareness on the continuing need for improvement of education provided to African children. Decrying the prevailing challenges faced by the African Child, Mrs. Obiano enjoined children to remain focused and concentrate on their education to actualise their goals in life. In this interview with our Correspondent, SAMUEL LUKA, he spoke of his happiness over the Congratulatory visit to him by the leadership of the State Chapter of the NUJ, Bauchi, his resolve to carry all working journalists along, amongst others. You have been appointed by His Excellency, Governor Bala Mohammed Abdulkadir of Bauchi State as his Senior Special Assistant on Media. How do you react to that? Well, first of all, I would like to give thanks to Almighty Allah for giving the members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists Bauchi State under the Chairmanship of Comrade Ibrahim Malam Goje for the congratulatory visit in order to felicitate with me on my appointment on this capacity by His Excellency, the Governor. This visit is a very important one not because of anything else but because I am also a journalist and a colleague as well as my capacity as the Deputy National President of the Union, so, this is an important visit. I am impressed that they are the first people to pay a congratulatory visit on me. And just like I have said earlier, this is an indication that I have been interacting with them very well and they are confident that with me in this position I will ensure that we collectively contribute to the development of Bauchi State by having a cordial working relationship between journalists and the government of Senator Bala Mohammed. As you are aware, the governor himself is a journalist, the first work he started after his graduation from the university and the

developmental activities are well reported for members of the public to know, because the governor means well for the state. Lagos speaker, Obasa asks Edo, Bauchi governors to resolve Assemblies crises Patrick Okohue The Chairman, Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures in Nigeria, who is also Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, has urged Governors of Edo and Bauchi states, Godwin Obaseki and Bala Mohammed, to resolve the crises in their respective states’ Houses of Assembly. Obasa, who made the call in a statement issued in Lagos on Sunday, said that the crises that had engulfed the Houses of Assembly in both states must not be allowed to fester. The chairman called for the reversal of the proclamations of the two Houses and the elections of the principal officers through due process of law. According to him, illegality should not thrive on the altar of perceived personal ego and interest. Obasa said that the body would not recognise any speaker whose emergence was through a fraudulent process or the violation of the constitution and the Business Rules of the affected House of

Assembly. While stating that the body would not condone illegality, the lawmaker admonished the governors of both states to adhere strictly to the spirit and letters of the constitution and the rules of the Houses of Assembly on the emergence of principal officers. “No society can progress when its stakeholders are at daggers-drawn,” he said, adding “a situation where the minority in a House of Assembly takes control of activities over the majority is condemnable. “No lover of democracy in the country should support the charade that happened recently at both Houses of Assembly. If we must make progress, we must work in an atmosphere of peace, love and unity. “We must also call on the two governors to reverse their actions and act in accordance with the laws backing up the legislative arms of their states,” Obasa said. According to him, a situation where nine members will elect the principal officers in a 24-member House and inaugurate them, as it happened in Edo, is illegal. He also condemned the election of

principal officers in the Bauchi State House of Assembly by 11 out of the 31 members, describing it as questionable. Obasa expressed the regret that the crisis in the Bauchi Assembly had led to the emergence of two speakers, with its attendant litigations. According to him, even though Section 92(1), Chapter V of the 1999 Constitution simply states that there shall be a Speaker and a Deputy Speaker of a House of Assembly who shall be elected by the members of the House from among themselves, Section 98 (1 and 2) clearly stipulates that voting must be by simple majority. “Specifically, Section 98(2) expressly states: “Except as otherwise provided by this Constitution, the required majority for the purpose of determining any question shall be a simple majority,” he added. While reacting to the injunction secured by the 11 members of the Bauchi House of Assembly stopping the majority in the House from parading their elected Speaker and Deputy, Obasa cautioned the judiciary against unnecessarily meddling in the affairs of the state legislatures.

DSTV vs CPC: CPC dismisses DSTV claim over cooperation Ladesope Ladelokun The Consumer Protection Council (CPC) -now known as Federal Commission and Consumer Protection Commission - has dismissed the claim by a cable television services provider, DSTV that it has always cooperated with the Commission to deliver better services for the sake of its customers. Speaking exclusively with our correspondent on Sunday, Director General of the Commission, Barr. Babatunde Irukera said that the claim by DSTV could not stand scrutiny, wondering why the CPC dragged DSTV to court if there was cooperation. Irukera explained that the CPC couldn’t have taken DSTV to court if the claim of the Cable television services was valid, adding that even when a court of competent jurisdiction ordered a reverse of its subscription rates, it refused to obey. “We went to court. The court gave an order. They didn’t comply with that order. The question you should have asked is that if you have always cooperated with the CPC, how come CPC took you to court? And when the court ordered that you should reverse the hike, why did you not obey the order of the court?” he queried. On the way forward, he said the CPC had recently released orders for issues that are not being challenged in court, noting that it would monitor to ensure total compliance. “We can’t penalise them for something they are challenging in court, for the things that are not in court, we released an order that mandates them to do certain things, and we are watching. We are monitoring to see that they obey all these other things that we have ordered. The question of their price hike is reserved for another day. It’s outside what we can do now based on the fact that we are in court.” The CPC DG had in a statement in Abuja said the Commission on June 17, 2018, filed an action against Multichoice (owners of DSTV and GOTV) before the Federal High Court in Abuja. He accused Multichoice of acting in bad faith in preempting the CPC after a broad investigation, and a proposed mutually agreed consent. The statement read in part:” The court granted interim injunctive relief prohibiting Multichoice from proceeding with the conduct that the Commission alleged constituted bad faith. Multichoice failed to obey the injunctive Order of the court, preferring instead to challenge the validity and proprietary of the order and powers of the court. The court order became the subject of an appeal to the Court of Appeal.” Meanwhile, in order to address broad consumer protection and quality issues that were lacking and had become sources of unceasing complaints by consumers, according to CPC, the Commission released what it called the Final Order recently. In an interview with The Daily Times during the weekend, Carol Oghuma, DSTV’s spokesperson, said the cooperation of the cable television services provider with the investigations of the CPC for the sake of its customers was never in doubt when asked if DSTV would comply with the Final Order released by the CPC recently. Her words: “We’ve always cooperated with every investigation the CPC has launched. We always work with the CPC; cooperate with their investigations for the sake of our customers. We always cooperate.”

Gridlock: Decongestion of Lagos ports on course, says Osinbajo As Vice President, Sanwo-Olu visit Apapa, inspect ongoing projects

Temitope Adebayo Efforts to decongest ports in Lagos State have been intensified, with a visit to Apapa by the Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo and Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Saturday. The visit to Apapa was seen as a pointer to the readiness of the Federal Government to work with the Lagos government in finding a lasting solution to the gridlock that has become an eyesore along with the nation’s busiest ports. Prof. Osinbajo, who is also the Executive Chairman of the Presidential Taskforce on the

Apapa Traffic Gridlock said the decongestion of the Apapa port and its environ remained the focus of the Federal Government, noting that the visit to the port was prompted by the need to assess the level of work being done towards solving the quagmire. He said: “There are several aspects of the task that has to be done in decongesting the port. There have been a lot of infrastructure projects around the Lagos ports initiated by the Federal Government. Some of these projects have been completed; a lot are still ongoing. However, clearing the roads of trailers and oil tankers is the major issue that is of concern to the people. The good news is, there is a considerable improvement in this regard.

“The Mile 2 end of the Apapa axis is where there is some difficulty, but I assure you that in the next couple of days, it will be resolved, given the operation of Tin Can Island Trailer Park and the palliative work going on all the way down to Mile 2. We can all see that the entry to the ports is essentially clear. “There are short terms; mid and long term measures we are putting in place. One of our long-term measures is to decongest the cargo traffic coming in and out of the ports. Apapa port is meant to take 34 million metric tons, but it is currently doing over 80 million metric tons today. There is certainly a need to find an alternative and to expand.” “We should be able to get cargos out of the

Apapa port, using the rail. The NPA is using barges at the moment. This is a very busy port and congestion is caused largely by the constraint of space. In sustaining the effort, we are improving the capacity of other ports across the country and then improve the infrastructure around these ports,” the Vice President said. Lagos government expressed satisfaction with the Federal Government’s effort to solve the traffic congestion around Apapa occasioned by the influx of cargo and heavy-duty vehicles. Governor Sanwo-Olu said his administration would be ever ready to complement any effort by the Federal Government to ensure decongestion of the area in order to ease the pains of residents and businesses.

The share price of Stanbic IBTC Holdings dropped by N1.85 to N40.65 from N42.50 while MTN Nigeria the share price dipped by N5.60 to N130 per share. With the decline in market capitalization, the NSE All-Share Index (NSE ASI) also depreciated by 0.65 per cent or 195.41 basis points to 29,851.29 basis points from 30,046.70 basis points to bring the Year-Till-Date (YTD) performance to -5.02 per cent.

All other indices finished higher with the exception of the NSE-Main Board Index, NSE Premium Index, NSE MERI Growth Index, NSE Consumer Goods Index, and NSE Lotus II which depreciated by 0.49per cent, 0.77per cent, 0.83per cent, 1.64per cent and 1.54per cent respectively while NSE ASeM Index closed flat. According to NSE, the total turnover of 7.476 billion shares worth N91.107 billion in 17,192 deals were traded last week by investors on the floor of the Exchange in contrast to a total of 868.739 million shares valued at N15.792 billion that exchanged

hands last week in 12,201 deals. The report by NSE stated that “The Financial Services Industry (measured by volume) led the activity chart with 6.121 billion shares valued at N17.460 billion traded in 8,479 deals; thus contributing 81.87per cent and 19.16per cent to the total equity turnover volume and value respectively. “The Oil & Gas Industry followed with 1.002 billion shares worth N65.058 billion in 2,019 deals. The third place was ICT Industry with a turnover of 115.320 million shares worth N3.387 billion in 866 deals.

NNPC pledges continuous support for local companies Lauds MRS on localisation of oil production Michael Ajayi The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) has commended MRS Oil Nigeria Plc for localising oil production, stating that it will help to increase employment in the Nigeria. The Group Managing Director of the Corporation, Dr Maikanti Baru, said this during a plant tour of MRS Oil Nigeria Plc, an indigenous oil company in Tin Can Island, Lagos. “It is good to see MRS localising production to ensure it provides employment to the people, improves the economy and produces quality products at a much lower price”, he said. Baru congratulated the management

of the company for venturing into manufacturing alongside their core area of oil trading. Baru in a statement released by the corporation on Sunday, however, assured that NNPC would continue to support local companies, within the entire hydrocarbon value-chain, for the growth of the nation’s economy. He said NNPC was ready to encourage MRS in whatever way it could and as a commercial customer, adding that MRS would be given priority in terms of gas supply in order to keep it growing and ultimately would grow the economy. Furthermore, the GMD said he was particularly impressed with the way the company packaged lubricants, including home care products and insecticides,

noting that such products were always in demand. “There are vast opportunities for partnership with NNPC Retail which is also going into lubricants manufacturing, especially in terms of blending and packaging of their products. “So in terms of collaboration, it is a win-win situation for both of us.” He described the newly constructed MRS Plant, which boasted state-ofthe-art equipment, as one that could compete favourably with any plant of its type anywhere in the world in all ramifications. The Group Chief Executive Officer of the company, Alhaji Sayyu Dantata, thanked the GMD for the visit, which he said had energised the company in

its quest to remain a key player in the nation’s downstream and manufacturing sectors. He said with NNPC’s assurance of constant gas supply to the plant, MRS was upbeat about meeting its objectives by providing Nigerians quality products at highly competitive prices. Dantata described the GMD as the father of the industry who had been very supportive of the growth of indigenous companies. “It is always good for them to come and see for themselves. You can see that by visiting personally, he has already intervened with a strong commitment to supply us with gas so as to keep us going, and for us to help grow the economy. “We are very grateful for that,” he said.

While the Group net profit of N7 billion profit in 2018 far exceeded N4.8 billion in 2017 by 46.5 per cent, the giant construction company alone posted impressive net profit of N4.8 billion above that of N400 million at over a thousand per cent increase in this financial year. The financial statement, however, shown the Group’s tax liability of N4.2 billion and N1.2 billion for the 2018 and 2017 financial year respectively, while the construction giant alone incurred tax obligations of N2.1billion and N1.2 billion for 2018 and 2017 financial year.

Recover properties seized from Lagos, Oba Akiolu tasks Gbajabimila, Wase Gbajabiamila, Wase visit Sanwo-Olu, Akiolu

Benjamin Omoike, Lagos The Oba of Lagos, Oba Rilwan Akiolu, wants all properties belonging to the state which were forcefully taken over by the Federal Government to be returned. The monarch urged the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, to use his position as the fourth citizen in the national leadership hierarchy to help Lagos retrieve the said properties. Oba Akiolu made the plea when the Lagos State Governor, Babajide SanwoOlu, led the speaker on a courtesy visit to the monarch at the weekend with his deputy, Idris Wase. The monarch said he had “valid documents” to lay claims to the properties which he said were taken during the military era. He said some of the properties dated back to the 19th century. He said: “We have a catalogue of requests from the Federal Government, from special status for the state to the return of all property belonging to Lagos government which were taken away by military fiat. We want the property to be

returned to us.” The monarch said the state must fight for the retrieval of the properties, which include CMS Grammar School and First Bank building on the Lagos Island, and harness them for improved service delivery in the state. “I have documents in my possession, which date back as far as 1800s, showing the ownership of all the property from CMS Grammar School to the First Bank building in Lagos. These properties are needed back for the improvement of our people.” Earlier, while receiving the Speaker at Lagos House, Ikeja, Governor SanwoOlu described the emergence of Femi Gbajabiamila as speaker of the House of Representatives as a great feat for the state. Sanwo-Olu also expressed joy that a Lagosian had been entrusted with the speakership of the lower chamber of the National Assembly which he sees as a major milestone in the annals of the state’s and the nation’s political history. “We’re happy that as a Lagosian, you are the speaker of the House of Representatives in Nigeria. This means a lot to us in the state. But, beyond being a Lagosian, we’re happy that Nigeria is

blessed with a great personality as her speaker. We know that you will work for the good of the country,” he said. The governor informed the speaker that Lagos deserves more from the Federal Government and said he hopes that Gbajabiamila would use his office to better the lot of the state. Responding, Gbajabiamila described his home coming as very emotional, noting that “it feels really great to be welcomed home by your people”. The speaker noted that Lagos is his home, but Nigeria is his seat. He promised to be fair to every Nigerian in his administration of the House of Representatives. The speaker promised better collaboration between the federal and Lagos State governments, saying so much is expected of Governor Sanwo-Olu to deliver the dividends of democracy. “So much is expected of you as much as it is expected of me too. But I know you and I know your pedigree. Chances are that you will surpass those expectations,” he added. The speaker and his deputy were joined during the visits by members of the House from various regions of the country.

Anambra Govt constitutes new leadership for market associations Anambra Government has constituted a new leadership that would run the affairs of market associations in the state, known as Anambra State Amalgamated Traders Association (ASMATA). The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the ASMATA leadership made up of 20 members is led by Mr. Ikechukwu Ekwegbalu and Mrs Rosemary Anazodo, as acting President-General and Secretary respectively. Dr. Christian Madubuko, Commissioner for Trade and Commerce, constituting the body in his office on Saturday in Awka, announced that Chief Godwin Okeke, Chief Innocent Chukwuma of Innoson Motors and Chief Rommy Ezeonwuka as patrons of ASMATA. Madubuko also inaugurated leaders for the six zones of the association and two-man legal advisers and two-man advisers on markets. He said the state government revived the defunct ASMATA as replacement for Amalgamated Traders Association, Anambra State (AMATAS) which was formed about 12 years ago. He said AMATAS failed to hold a peaceful election to replace the out gone leadership and refused the state government to intervene in their matter. NAN reports that the immediate past chairman of AMATAS was Chief Okwudili Ezenwankwo who won the Federal House of Representatives seat for Orumba North and Orumba South Federal Constituency of Anambra. The commissioner said ASMATA was now the only umbrella body recognised by Anambra Government, adding that their operation would not be affected by whatever would be the outcome of the suit initiated by AMATAS against the government. “We instituted a new umbrella body for traders in Anambra, sometime ago, during Dr Chris Ngige’s regime, the state government introduced ASMATA but unfortunately that noble association that would have united traders in the state was abolished and replaced with AMATAS.

He charged the new team not to shortchange government, warning that culprit’s would be sacked if caught. Ezeonwuka, one of the patrons of ASMATA, said the focus was to restore the glory days of Anambra as a commerce state and optimise the opportunities in the sector for economic prosperity of the people. He promised that Anambra traders would be protected from undue harassment in the course of carrying out their legitimate businesses. “Anambra has lost some of her markets to neighbours because of the mismanagement of leadership and touts who were allowed to harass traders. “As patrons, we shall ensure that the new leadership checkmates those challenges, we are a trader and commerce state, we don’t earn oil revenue, so we will ensure that all revenue due to government is released so that government can work.

Turkey’s opposition wins rerun of Istanbul mayoral vote

Sudan military calls for joint AU, Ethiopia transition plan

Sudan’s ruling military council has appealed to the African Union and Ethiopia to unify their efforts in outlining a blueprint for a political transition in the crisis-hit country. The Transitional Military Council (TMC) and the opposition coalition have been wrangling for weeks over what form Sudan’s transitional government should take after the military deposed long-time President Omar al-Bashir on April 11. On Sunday, Shams al-Din Kabashi, spokesman for TMC, said the council rejected the Ethiopian initiative but had agreed in principle to the AU’s plan. Details of the AU proposal were not immediately known. A draft of the Ethiopian proposal, seen by the Associated Press and Reuters news agencies, suggested that a ruling sovereign council would be made up of seven civilians and seven members of the military, with one additional seat reserved for an impartial individual. Ahmed Rabie, spokesman for the opposition Alliance for Freedom and Change, said the council was to have

a rotating chairmanship. The majority of the civilians on the interim body would come from the alliance, he told AP. “We asked the mediators to unite their efforts and submit a joint paper as soon as possible to return the parties to negotiations,” Kabashi said at a news conference at the presidential palace. This joint proposal should be received by Monday, he said. Ethiopia and the AU have stepped up diplomatic efforts to resolve the crisis in Sudan. Talks between the TMC and the Alliance for Freedom and Change collapsed when security forces stormed a protest sit-in outside the defence ministry on June 3, killing scores of protesters. A member of the military council, Yasser al-Atta, suggested that it had doubts about the protest leaders ability to govern. He addressed protest leaders saying that “you should include other political forces” or it would be difficult to rule. “We want them to rule and lead the transitional period, but can this be

done?” he added. Kabashi also defended Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, saying that both countries, along with Egypt, “have provided unconditional support” to the Sudanese people. Egypt has voiced its support for the military council, pressing the African Union not to suspend Sudan’s activities in the regional block. Saudi Arabia and the UAE have pledged $3bn in aid to shore up its economy. Sudanese activists fear that the three countries are pushing the military to cling to power rather than help with democratic change, given that the three Arab states are ruled by leaders who have clamped down on political freedoms in their own countries. On Saturday, leaders of the umbrella protest movement said they accepted the creation of a civilianmajority governing body for a political transition in Sudan. The alliance said their approval of the Ethiopian plan “pushes all the parties to bear their responsibilities” to find a peaceful solution, and urged the military council to accept the plan “in order to move the situation in Sudan” forward.

Ethiopia’s Amhara state chief killed amid regional coup attempt The president of Ethiopia’s Amhara region and his top adviser were killed in an attempted coup in which the country’s army chief was also shot dead, the office of Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said. Spokeswoman Billene Seyoum told journalists a “hit squad” led by Amhara’s security chief Asaminew Tsige burst into a meeting in the state offices of Amhara’s capital, Bahir Dar, on Saturday and shot regional government President Ambachew Mekonnen and his adviser Ezez Wassie. The men were “gravely injured in the attack and later died of their wounds,” she said. “Several hours later, in what seems like a coordinated attack, the chief of the staff of the national security forces Seare Mekonnen was killed in his home by his bodyguard in Addis Ababa.” Also shot dead was a retired general who had been visiting him, Billene added. The bodyguard has been apprehended while Asaminew is still on the loose, sources said. Al Jazeera’s Leah Harding, reporting from Addis Ababa, said Abiy called those responsible “mercenaries”. “The army intelligence general said the coup was meant to create chaos and division in the military. He said

the military now has control over the situation ... and he reiterated that there are no divisions within the military,” Harding reported. “This is particularly important because the two generals that were killed in Addis Ababa are part of the Tigre ethnic group, and the person who we believe is responsible for the coup plot is part of the Amhara group.” Analysts said the incident showed the seriousness of the political crisis in Ethiopia, where efforts by Abiy to loosen the iron-fisted grip of his predecessors and push through reforms have unleashed a wave of unrest. “These tragic incidents, unfortunately, demonstrate the depth of Ethiopia’s political crisis,” said International Crisis Group analyst William Davison. “It is now critical that actors across the country do not worsen the instability by reacting violently or trying to exploit this unfolding situation for their own political ends,” the expert said. Residents of Bahir Dar said late on Saturday there was gunfire in some neighbourhoods and some roads had been closed off. The US embassy issued alerts about reported gunfire in Addis Ababa and violence around Bahir Dar. Early on Sunday, Brigadier General Tefera Mamo, the head of special forces

in Amhara, told state television that “most of the people who attempted the coup have been arrested, although there are a few still at large.” Since coming to power last year, Abiy has tried to spearhead political reforms to open up the once isolated, securityobsessed Horn of Africa country of 100 million people. He has released political prisoners, lifted bans on political parties and prosecuted officials accused of gross human rights abuses, but his government is battling mounting violence. Ethnic bloodshed - long held in check by the state’s iron grip - has flared up in many areas, including Amhara, where the regional government was led by Ambachew Mekonnen. “Since Abiy Ahmed took power and the country moved towards democratisation ... there have been different forms of mobilisations, by different actors, particularly nationalists.” Awol Allo, a lecturer in law at Keele University, told Al Jazeera. “[In] Amhara regional state, there is this feeling that they were marginalised, and these individuals that were suspected to be behind the coup recently said that Amhara people have never been subordinated.. so there is this sense of grievance and victimhood that is driving the nationalist movements,” he added.

In a major blow to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) candidate Ekrem Imamoglu has declared victory in the rerun of Istanbul’s mayoral election, after initial results showed he was set for a clear win. Imamoglu had won 54 percent of votes with almost all of the ballot boxes opened on Sunday, with the ruling Justice and Development Party’s (AK Party) candidate trailing on 45 percent and conceding defeat. Imamoglu promised a “new beginning” for Turkey’s largest city and commercial hub. “You have protected the reputation of democracy in Turkey,” he told supporters. His opponent, former Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim, conceded defeat after initial results showed he was set to lose by a decisive margin. “According to the result as of now, my competitor Ekrem Imamoglu is leading the race. I congratulate him and wish him good luck,” Yildirim said. CHP’s projected win in the Istanbul election ends the 17-year rule by the AK Party in the metropolis. The Istanbul mayoral election was first held on March 31, when Imamoglu secured 48.8 percent of the vote, while the AK Party’s Yildirim held 48.55 percent, granting Imamoglu the title of mayor with a razor-thin margin. The AK Party proceeded to file an “extraordinary objection” to the results, leading the Supreme Electoral Council (YSK) to annul the results and schedule Sunday’s rerun. Not just a local election The Istanbul election has become far bigger than any local vote, as the rerun put into question the country’s democracy and threatened the AK Party’s grip on power over the last two decades. Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan - who served as Istanbul’s mayor in the 1990s and leads the AK Party - has famously said: “Whoever loses Istanbul loses Turkey”. Erdogan cast his vote on Sunday amid high security in Uskudar, a predominately conservative district on the city’s Asian side. Berk Esen, Bilkent University assistant professor of international relations, described it as being a “major personal blow for Erdogan. “It has marked the beginning of the end for the Turkish-style presidency and become difficult for the AKP machine to sustain itself,” he said. Senior AKP member Harun Armagan played down the significance of the defeat. “[This election loss] doesn’t mean

more than in any other city. Obviously Istanbul is very important, but at the same time, AKP have won more municipalities than any other parties combined in this election,” Armagan said, referring to the original March 31 vote. He went on to say AKP would now take its time to assess where they have fallen short on reaching their previous supporters in Istanbul. “This is democracy, we have to expect the rule of people.” After casting his vote earlier on Sunday, the AK Party candidate Yildirim addressed a gathered crowd with a statement seemingly pointing to the pressure felt by his party. “If we ever made any wrongdoing to any rival or brother in Istanbul, I would like to ask for their forgiveness and blessing,” Yildirim expressed. Countering irregularities To ensure no “illegal wrongdoings” were made in Istanbul’s mayoral rerun, various independent mechanisms have been implemented, in order to monitor the voting and counting process. For example, at the call of the CHP, lawyers from across Turkey volunteered their time to travel to Istanbul in order to counter election fraud. One lawyer was appointed to each voting booth set up in nearly 2,000 polling stations across the city. Esen told Al Jazeera it was an important development for Turkish politics, as the vote counting process has not been very accurate and fair in previous elections. “It’s important for the opposition party to organise and mobilise supporters not only to come out and vote but also observe the counting process to make sure no votes will be stolen,” Esen said. “Lawyers … would be able to make sure that the ruling party will not be able to cancel the result on a mere technicality.” Since the state-run Anadolu Agency became the outlet to distribute live election results to the media in 2014, the voluntary Vote and Beyond (“Oy ve Otesi”) organisation has been trying to ensure “transparent and accountable elections”. After controversy surrounded Anadolu Agency’s release of data in the March 31 election, in which is ceased broadcasting at 11pm when Imamoglu came into the lead, Vote and Beyond launched a new mobile application to post live updates. The data is sourced from volunteers at each polling station recording “minutes” of the counts. A group of citizen journalists who founded the group Dokuz8, also in 2014, have also released live updates of the vote counting.

Lewis Hamilton appears unstoppable in clinching the 2019 Formula 1 championship when he registered an emphatic victory ahead of Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas at the French Grand Prix. The defending five-time champion repeated his pole-to-flag triumph of 2018 with a flawless drive to his fourth win in succession, sixth this season and 79th of his career. President Donald Trump, the commander-inchief of the United States Armed Forces is quite strategic in his wars. He is an exceptionally likeable president who undoubtedly has changed the way many of us perceive world leaders. He is more audacious than President Richard Nixon, but adds charisma to his audacity and gets away with anything. When polls showed that he was lagging behind the leading Democratic Party aspirants in key states, he disbelieved it and got his own pollsters to carry out a survey in seventeen states. The problem was that the results were similar to the poll results he had rejected; he trailed the democrats in key states like Michigan and Wisconsin. Trump reacted on June 14, labelling his own polls a fake: “It’s incorrect polling. Yes, it’s incorrect.” To show his anger, charismatic Trump fired three of his pollsters: Michael Baselice, president of Baselice & Associates Inc; Adam Geller and Brett Lloyd, president of The Polling Company. Their purge could be for allegedly leaking the poll results. But it could also be because of the outcome. I do not put it past Trump to deny reality and wish his true reflection away simply by smashing the mirror. Two days later, during an interview with ABC News host, George Stephanopoulos, on the annoying poll results and his refusal to release his tax papers, his acting chief of staff, Mick Mulvaney coughed. An angry Trump responded: “Let’s do that over, he’s coughing in the middle of my answer. I don’t like that, you know, I don’t like that…If you’re going to cough, please leave the room. You just can’t, you just can’t cough. Boy oh boy.” I am sure Trump knows that a cough can be involuntary, but he might not be sure if Mulvaney coughed as a cynical response to the yarn his boss was weaving. During the interview, Trump defended his powers to fire top American officials, and when it was pointed out that he might have no such powers, he hinted that the American president is so powerful that he can do whatever he wants. Trump, God bless him for presiding over God’s Own Country, implies that even if what an American president does is against the law, that becomes the law. Last Tuesday, in the morning

of his June 18 re-election campaign launch, he shot up the adrenaline of his countrymen and millions across the world by tweeting that he would start expelling “millions” of illegal migrants next week. With his followers so primed, at the rally in Orlando, Florida, he launched missile attacks against his opponents and perceived enemies. Not forgetting that Hilary Clinton had, in 2016, defeated him by 2,864,974 votes in the popular ballot and that he became president only through the Electoral College, Trump expended a lot of energy demonising her. Calling her “crooked”, he mentioned her eight times in his 80-minute speech. On leading democrats like Joe Biden, who he called “Sleepy Joe”, and Bernie Sanders, who he called “crazy”, both of who are leading him in opinion polls, he told Americans: “Our radical democrat opponents are driven by hatred, prejudice, and rage and want to destroy you, and they want to destroy our country as we know it.” “They would shut down your free speech and use the power of the law to punish their opponents.” “They would strip Americans of their constitutional rights, while flooding the country with illegal immigrants.” Then he turned to the media section, throwing a jab: “By the way, that is a lot of fake news back there.” Trump is a phenomenon. He came into politics with a lot of baggage including controversial business deals, launching a charity while refusing to pay many who labour for him, and tax dogging. He was quite loud on his programmes such as building a wall across the Mexico border and making the latter pay for it. He has not done so, but is bullying Mexico to use its troops against Latin American migrants headed for the U.S. He had to retreat from a controversial travel ban on Muslims coming from major Islamic countries. While his foreign policy engagements with North Korea hangs in the balance and he is embroiled in a bruising trade war with China, the Great Trump has thrown spanner in the climate change works and virtually wrecked the international Nuclear Deal with Iran. He has interfered in British politics by backing Boris Johnson to be prime minister, while sustaining incomprehensible attacks on London Boris Johnson. He once called Africa a

“shit hole.” It is impossible for a man as great as Trump not to have copycat leaders across the world. One of his sheepish followers is Brazilian president, Jair Bolsario, who in fact thinks himself as Trump’s political son. But the trophy for the most faithful disciple of Trump must go to Israeli prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu. Like his mentor, he is infallible. One great Trump attitude Netanyahu has, is audacity. Being indicted for corruption and his wife, Sara convicted for the lesser crime of fraudulently using state funds, has not dampened his enthusiasm. While the world was still trying to work out a solution to the crisis in Palestine by suggesting a two-state solution in which Israel and Palestine can live in peace within secured borders, Netanyahu tore the plan down by simply designating Jerusalem, including the Palestinian indigenous East Jerusalem, as Israel’s new capital. He did it with the full backing and imperial power of President Trump. Last week, Netanyahu, who has been leading the continuous theft of indigenous Palestinian land for illegal Jewish sentiments, unveiled a sign in Syria’s Golan Heights revealing that he had named part of the stolen Syrian territory, ‘Trump Heights.’ As a Christian who should not be associated with stolen property, many expected Trump to decline the offer. But not Trump; he tweeted that it was a “great honour!” I am sure Trump might be dreaming about the type of profitable property development that can be built in the Golan Heights. He might also eye a postretirement golf course. As we say in Nigeria, ‘Trump no send’ propriety, while morality and a sense of fairness are not his strong points. Like Netanyahu, he has implicit and abiding trust in chariots and violence. For them, morality does not exist; the word, peace, has been ripped out of their dictionary. Might is right; it is everyman for himself, and god for us all. I want Trump re-elected so he can continue his great job of turning the world upside down. But what is he doing with Michael Pompeo; a secretary of state that is incapable of telling decent lies against Iran on oil tanker attacks in the Gulf? We, lovers of Trump hereby demand: Pompeo must go!

AFCON: Analysts laud Super Eagles victory, optimistic of team’s progress Football analysts and fans in Osun have lauded the victory of the Super Eagles’ win over Burundi at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt. The analysts and fans equally commended the Super Falcons of Nigeria for their efforts, during their outing at the ongoing FIFA Women’s World Cup in France, adding that the team needed to start preparing early ahead of the next edition of the competition. Rotimi Stevens, a football analyst, said he was happy the Super Eagles won their opening match of the competition, noting that it would be a morale booster for the team to go all the way to win the tournament. Stevens, however, commended the resilience of the Burundians too, saying that they played and fought with determination, making the victory for the Super Eagles difficult. “I duff my hat to the Burundians, they dispelled their description as minnows. “Just one most experienced players in their squad, Berahino, but they held the Eagles for the bet. “My worries are their national anthem and their coach, I almost mistook the coach for a CEO of an oil company. Popoola, however, consoled the Super Falcons of Nigeria, as they got battered 0-3 by Germany in the round of 16 of the FIFA Women’s World Cup in France. “Nigerians are happy with the outcome of today’s encounter with Burundi, however, both players and technical crew should be careful, learning and improving on daily bases. “Nigerians will continue to pray for them and in the case of the Falcons, I guess it is back to the drawing board. “The Falcons did their best, qualifying for the second round of the World Cup, but loss to Germany, a multiple World Cup winner, seems inevitable but our girls did well,’’ he said. Adeniyi Adewale, an analyst showered praises on the Super Eagles players, especially the substitutes for their brilliant performance, which led to Nigeria’s victory. “Thanks to our substitutes that made the day for the Eagles, Ahmed Musa and Ighalo the goal scorer. “Ordinarily, the Nigeria vs Burundi on paper will easily be a 4-0 outcome but the Burundians proved bookmakers wrong. “Only commending the Super Eagles for a very slim victory but Burundi having the best chances of the night is not so good, I want the technical team and the players to improve more in subsequent matches.’’ he said.
