Chris Ekpenyong, won in Abak, Etim Ekpo, Ika, Obot Akara, Ini and Ikono local government areas.

Other areas where the former Deputy Governor, Chris Ekpenyong, was leading include Oruk Anam, Ukanafun and Ikot Ekpene as released by the Electoral Officers in the council areas.

The Daily Times investigation revealed that the result announced by INEC Electoral Officers and transmitted to headquarters in Uyo sent bad signal to the APC causing tension for impending defeat of the former Senate Minority Leader, Senator Godswill Akpabio, who dumped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) last year for All Progressives Congress (APC) last year.

The development caused Senator Akpabio to make last minutes effort to save his political career from mockery in the state as he allegedly attempted to change the result of Essien Udim (his home local government) but was

resisted by INEC officials in the area.

Reacting to the incident, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) raised alarm and drew attention of the security agencies.

In a statement issued on Sunday in Uyo titled: “The Attempt to Change the Result of Essien Udim will not be accepted”, the Publicity Secretary of PDP, Comrade Ini Ememobong, alleged that Senator Godswill Akpabio has made several attempt to change result of Essien Udim Council Area against his mass rejection by the people.

“Since yesterday, there have been several attempts by Senator Godswill Akpabio to change the results of Essien Udim Local Government Area from the mass rejection that the voters served him to a huge number in his favour. This move has suffered several setbacks since then. It is common knowledge that all other local government areas in that Senatorial District have collated and submitted their results, except Essien Udim and this has been confirmed by our agents.

“However, information reaching us is that Senator Godswill Akpabio accompanied by Ibanga

Akpabio, Hon. Emmanuel Akpan, Hon. Nse Ntuen, armed police, soldiers and thugs are currently at the INEC office at Essien Udim.

The Electoral Officer, Charles Ibiapuye Esq, we learnt, has finally succumbed to pressure emanating from death threats and financial inducement of 200,000 USD and is now filling results sheets for units and wards where elections had been cancelled.”

Meanwhile, Senate President.

Dr. Bukola Saraki, has lost his Kwara Central senatorial seat to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Senator Saraki lost in all of the local governments in his Senatorial District in Saturday’s National Assembly elections.

The local governments are Asa, Ilorin South and Ilorin East. The fourth local government is Ilorin West, the Senate President own local government.

Result announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission on Sunday evening showed that in Ilorin West, APC polled 51, 531 while the PDP polled 30, 075.

Final result showed that Oloriegbe polled 123,808 while Saraki got 68,994 votes.

Rivers govt to seek justice for victims of election violence Amaka Agbu, Port Harcourt

The Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, has declared that the Rivers State Government would pursue justice for all those allegedly murdered in cold blood by soldiers of the Nigerian Army.

Addressing journalists on Sunday at the Government House, Port Harcourt, Governor Wike alleged that the army was recruited by the All Progressives Congress (APC) to unleash mayhem on PDP members in Abonnema and other towns during Presidential and National Assembly elections.

The governor said that all those involved in the cold blooded murder of innocent Rivers people “to feather the Presidential Ambition of their benefactor will not go unpunished.”

Governor Wike particularly accused the Minister of Transportation, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 6 Division of the Nigerian Army, Major General Jamil Sarham, and the Federal

Special Anti-robbery Squad (FSARs), Akin Fakorede, of playing “ugly roles in the murder of Rivers people during the elections.”

He said: “Let it be known that those who masterminded the murderous assault on Abonnema and other communities in Rivers State last Saturday have bloodstains on their hands, for which they are all answerable before the Almighty God. “I wish to assure all and sundry that we shall as a government pursue justice for the families of the victims against the perpetrators of the mayhem, killings and destructions in Abonema, Buguma, Degema and other places no matter how powerful they may seem and how long it may take”.

Governor Wike called on President Muhammadu Buhari to immediately direct the army to pull out of Abonnema, so that the people could resume their normal lives.

“I call on Mr. President to please, in the name of God direct the army to withdraw the occupation and siege on Abonnema and Bonny

communities so that the people can go about with their normal lives,” he said.

“But, like all wellmeaning Nigerians, I dare to ask: does the ambition of Mr. President to cling on to power warrant the gruesome and coldblooded murder of innocent souls in Rivers State by the Minister of Transportation and his armed gangs?

“Must the Minister of Transportation shed innocent blood, desecrate the land of Abonnema and humiliate our people in pursuit of the re-election of our President?

“Are the people Abonnema and indeed, kalabari happy with the occupation of their land and the way it was turned to a minefield of killings and destruction by the army on account of someone’s ambition to remain relevant in national politics and hopefully be re-appointed?

“Are the APC leaders of Kalabari, especially Mr. Tonye Cole, Prince Tonye Princewill and Professor Charles Dokubo pleased with the killings and

Expectations as Nigerians await results of presidential poll Tunde Opalana, Abuja

Expectations of Nigerians citizens across the globe and foreigners alike are high as they patiently await the result of last Saturday’s Presidential election held nationwide.

However, they may have to wait probably till late Tuesday evening or Wednesday morning for the final results due to certain developments.

As at press time, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had postponed activities at the National Collation Centre till today (Monday) due to non- arrival of completed results from the states.

Also coupled with the fact that INEC has declared postponement of election in some parts of Anambra, Lagos and Rivers State due to pockets of crisis recorded on Saturday.

Recall also that elections were held on Sunday in Benue, Taraba states.

The Commission chairman, Prof Mahmood Yakubu, already gave the indication that the final complete result will not be declared until all results from the 36 states and the FCT have been compiled.

On Sunday, Prof. Yakubu said that all have to wait till today (Monday) as the National Collation Centre will open at 11.00am for collection of results from states.

Prof. Yakubu after declaring open the 2019 Presidential Election Result Collation Center Abuja yesterday, said the Commission still await results from the states.

However, INEC chairman, Prof.

Mahmood Yakubu, warned that people should desist from posting unauthorised results on social media while urging Nigerians to rely on results released by the Commission.

He said: “Some PU results are in the public domain. Let me once again reiterate the position of the law that only the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) can tally figures, announce result and

declare winners in our general election.

“I urge all stakeholders to strictly adhere to the provisions of the law and be circumspect in this respect.

We are doing everything possible to ensure the speedy collation of results and the declaration of winners for the elections conducted on Sunday.

Meanwhile, as the nation await the results, there have been allegations and counter allegations from the two leading parties on the results yet undeclared.

The major opposition, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) fired the first salvo calling on INEC to declare its candidate, Atiku Abubakar, winner of the election.

The PDP charged the Independent National Electorate Commission (INEC) to immediately announce results as delivered from the polling units and declare its candidate, Atiku Abubakar, the winner of the February 23 Presidential election The party’s position was predicated on what it called clear and verifiable results across the nation, showing that Atiku Abubakar is in clear lead both in spread and total number of votes cast.

National Publicity Secretary of PDP and Director of Media & Publicity, PDP Presidential Campaign Organisation, Kola Ologbondiyan, made this known in a statement on Sunday.

“Curiously, INEC server is now shut down, results are no more being transmitted and the reason is to enable the APC to inflate figures from six designated states,” he stated.

The PDP called on international observers and election monitors to insist on a transparent process of transmission of results and the monitoring thereof.

“We already have reports of how APC governors in the northern states have been making desperate effort to tamper with the results of the elections in their respective states

“In Kogi State, Governor Yahaya Bello has been making frantic moves to change results to suit APC’s intent and purposes as against the wishes of the people, expressly delivered at the polls.

“Nigerians already know how the Minister of Transportation and the Director-General of the Buhari Campaign, Rotimi Amaechi, used the military to hold an INEC official in River state, Mrs. Mary Efeturi, hostage and insisted that she will not be released until she alters the results in favour of President Buhari”, he stated.

The party charged the INEC Chairman, Prof.

Mahmood Yakubu, to note that in this age of Information Communication Technology, Nigerians already have the results as delivered at the

128 electoral offenders arrested during Saturday Presidential poll Andrew Orolua, Abuja The Inspector General of Police, Ag. IGP Mohammed Adamu, has said a total of 128 persons were arrested across the country for various electoral offences during Saturday Presidential and National Assembly elections.

He said the offences for which they were arrested ranging from homicide-related crimes, vote trading, ballot box snatching, impersonation, malicious damage, amongst others, while 38 assorted weapons and a cache of explosives were also recovered.

The IGP has therefore directed the Special Election Investigation Team (SEIT) to immediately commence discrete investigation of all security related infractions during the election and ensure that all persons found culpable are brought to book in accordance

with the law.

He, however, commended Nigerians for the massive turnout, and their orderliness at the elections.

He also commended personnel of the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies for the sacrifices they made that ensured the successful conduct of the elections.

Adamu said that notwithstanding a few unfortunate incidents, including loss of lives recorded during the election, the exercise was generally successful.

Adamu was however worried and had expressed deep concerns over continuous use of hateful and inflammatory comments capable of inciting Nigerians against one another, especially by politicians and their followers.

He therefore warned that while the Force is not in the business of censoring Nigerians or abridging

their constitutional rights of freedom of speech, it will not hesitate to rein in the full wrath of the law on any person(s) found wanting in this regard.

In a similar vein, the IGP, while noting that only the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is authorised by law to announce election results, warned all those, especially the social media users, engaging in unlawful announcement and dissemination of election results, to desist forthwith or be ready to face the consequences of their actions.

Meanwhile, the IGP has directed the Zonal AIGs and Command CPs to ensure adequate post-election security arrangement in their Areas of Responsibilities (AORs), with special focus on Collation Centres and other vulnerable points to ensure no breach of peace of any kind is recorded across the country.

Atiku polling centers and any attempt to alter any figure will be faced with vehement resistance.

“In delaying the announcement of the results, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu is allowing the APC to turn him into a villain and directly pitching him against the people. He should therefore extricate himself from the rejected APC and be on the side of the people, by immediately announcing the results as already delivered at the polling units and declare, the people’s candidate, Atiku Abubakar, the winner.

“Anything short of this is not acceptable to Nigerians, who had already expressed their wishes and aspiration at the polls”, the party warned.

However, the ruling APC asked security agencies to arrest one of PDP Presidential spokesperson, Buba Galadima, for declaring fake results.

In a statement by Festus Keyamo, the APC said the PDP is to activate the last strand of their Dubai strategies that have since collapsed like a pack of cards: they plan to release fake results of the Presidential Election later today (Sunday) or early Monday morning that they claim to have compiled themselves.

He said the party aim to create crises and confusion that will lead to Alhaji Atiku Abubakar claiming victory in a day or two from today ahead of the official announcement of the results by INEC. “Then, what would follow will be some carefully choreographed protests by pockets of hoodlums in some parts of the country.

The ultimate aim is to curry the sympathy of our foreign friends and push us to the Venezuela situation.

“Our call is therefore to INEC, NIGERIA BROADCASTING COMMISSION and all lawenforcement agencies to continually warn the PDP and all their surrogates like the amorphous CUPP and their likes that anyone who flouts the law on announcement of official results will be made to face the law. Opposition does not confer immunity on anyone to flout the law.

“In preparation for this reckless move, some PDP social media agents are already flying some kites on-line as to the number of States allegedly ‘won’ by PDP. In fact, Alhaji Buba Galadima, an official spokesperson for Alhaji Atiku Abubakar has made a short video announcing PDP as the ‘winner’ of the Presidential Election. As an official spokesperson, he is clearly acting on behalf of Alhaji Atiku Abubakar and on his instruction. We, therefore call for the immediate arrest, interrogation and prosecution of Alhaji Buba Galadima in this regard. The world is watching and waiting on Alhaji Atiku Abubakar to say something on the video by Alhaji Buba Galadima.

“Consequently, we urge all wellmeaning Nigerians, the International Community and even reasonable members of the Opposition not to be bought by these cheap antics of the PDP. Let’s restrain our wards from being used by these unscrupulous elements. Nigeria will continue to exist after this election”, said Keyamo.

But Ekiti State was the first state to declare result of both Presidential and National Assembly polls.

The result was said to have been officially declared by Independent National Electoral Commission Returning Officer, Professor Idowu Olayinka, Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan.

The report said Buhari of the All Progressives Congress polled 219,231 votes, while Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party got 154,032 votes.

Also, the All Progressives Congress (APC) reportedly won the three senatorial seats in Ekiti State.

INEC Returning Officer, Prof.

Laide Lawal announced the result early hours of Sunday in Ikere.

While the winner scored 77,621 votes, the opposition Peoples Democratic Party PDP, Sen. Biodun Olujimi polled a total of 53,741 votes.

Apart from the APC and PDP, the other parties that participated in the election were Democratic Alliance (DA), Green Party of Nigeria (GPN), People’s Party of Nigeria (PPN), NAC and others.

Final results of presidential poll may be delayed in Osun As Oriolowo, Famurewa Ajibola scale through

Jide Oke, Osogbo Contrary to the Independent National Electoral Commission’s assurance that the results of the Presidential and National Assembly elections would be ready 48 hours after the polls, Nigerians may have to wait a little to have the final outcome of the election.

This development is attributable to some hiccups that developed during Saturday’s election in some parts of the country.

Though, the election was reported to have gone smoothly all over the country, there are quite in number of problems that surfaced in Oyo, Ogun, Lagos, Kwara, Kano, and Abuja where INEC officials and voting materials arrived late which led to late commencement of accreditation and consequently saw

election starting late in those states.

Meanwhile, the results of the National Assembly election in Osun State have started trickling in with senatorial candidates of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the three Senatorial districts emerging victorious at the polls.

They are Engr. Adelere Adeyemi Oriolowo for Osun West Senatorial District, Chief O. Famurewa, Osun East and Senator Ajibola Surajudeen Bashiru for Osun Central Senatorial District.

Also believed to have scaled through is the APC House of Representatives candidate for Isokan, Irewole and Ayedaade Federal Constituency, Honourable Taiwo Oluga.

The results of the remaining constituencies were still being awaited as at the time of filling this report.

Election: Army accuses Gov. Wike of trying to bribe GOC Andrew Orolua, Abuja

The Nigerian army has accused the Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, of making attempt to bribe the General Officer Commanding 6 Division of the Nigerian Army, Major General Jamil Sarham, to compromise the ongoing polls.

The state government has however, denied the accusation, saying the military was rather trying to divert attention from the “atrocities they are committing in Rivers State because of the elections”.

The army in a statement issued on Saturday by its acting Spokesperson, Sagir Musa alleged that, “It is indeed no secret to the military authorities that Governor Wike has on various occasions made attempts to compromise the integrity of the GOC 6 Division, Maj Gen Jamil Sarham.

“Having failed, despite series of overtures and monetary pledges of millions of dollars, both in person and from cronies, it is no surprise that the frustrated Governor has resorted to this appalling campaign of calumny.”

Musa’s statement was in response to an allegation

by Governor on Thursday that the army attempted to assassinate him.

“The Nigerian Army does not train assassins, as such the institution or her personnel cannot be involved in sending assassins to murder a state governor as alleged by Gov Nyesom Wike,” the statement added.

The army which insisted that it was neutral in the nation’s elections, challenged the Governor to prove his allegations against it within seven days or “he could as well, save face and keep his peace”.

In his reaction, the State Commissioner for Information, Emma Okah, said on Sunday, that the army’s allegation was “mere blackmail to cover the evil perpetrated by soldiers in the state.”

The governor outlined the atrocities allegedly committed by the Minister of Transportation, the GOC 6 Division of the Nigerian Army and the Federal Special Anti-robbery Squad during the Presidential and National Assembly elections in Rivers State.

“As I speak, the army are ravaging the entire Abonnema community and killing young men found in their homes. In Bonny, Rotimi Amaechi’s ally and former Commissioner of Transport, George Tolofari led a band of APC thugs to cordon off the RAC centre with the support of the army

and prevented the elections from holding in that Local Government Area.

“At Okrika, APC thugs snatched election materials from four riverine wards to an unknown destination, also with the support of the army.

This same scenario was repeated in parts of Ahoada West, Asari Toru, Emouha Degema, and Opobo/Nkoro Local Government Areas of the state.

“Again, in the ensuring confusion and anarchy, the army shot and killed a youth corper as well as an INEC’s ad hoc staff in Emouha and Degema Local Government Areas respectively,” he said.

Governor Wike alleged that “in the week preceding yesterday’s elections, various communities and interests groups of the PDP in Rivers State issued comprehensive press statements alerting the nation about their fears and concerns over the unrefuted conspiracy by the trio of Rotimi Amaechi, Major-General Jamil Sarham and Victor Akin Fakorede to violently scuttle the peaceful conduct of the general elections in Rivers State.”

Buhari, Atiku and consequences of our votes

Now that we have cast our votes in the presidential and National Assembly elections, results trickling in in droves and we patiently await their final outcome, what next? This is a question that should agitate the mind of every Nigerian this hour. This particular election has come and gone but it leaves in its trail indelible imprints that have very consequential implications for us as a people.

In terms of the setback it has given Nigeria and Nigerians, the negative cost cannot be imagined. Yes, in a couple of days from now, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) will announce the winner of the elections, but will the collateral damage we suffered in emotions, the human casualties, the enmities and hate we infected one another with in the course of advocating where we stand, get any redemption as a result of the results?

In terms of fatalities, a group of 70 civil society organizations (CSOs), the Nigeria Civil Society Situation Room, was quoted to have reported a spiral in politicallymotivated killings in the period leading up to the elections. Clement Nwankwo, convener of the organization, said reports across the country show that over 260 Nigerians were killed since the commencement of election campaigns in Nigeria from October 2018 till date. In Borno, a couple of days ago, Boko Haram insurgents also laid ambush to Governor Kashim Shettima’s convoy, killing 60 people, the elections ostensibly at the core of the mindless bloodshed. The casualties were providence’s own way of showing the ephemerality of our electoral pursuits and how death, the leveler, reduces all our earthly aspirations into mere hubris.

The period leading to Saturday was a very trying moment for Nigeria.

Granted that elections have always riven people apart, even in democracies that are far advanced than ours, this particular one was spectacular for its divisiveness. Hate speeches flew in the air like pestilence. Politicians stabbed and jabbed one another like miscreants trying to outsmart one another to a stolen chewing gum. Insults and recriminations were freely flung on the streets. Brothers turned against brothers; sisters against themselves and the air of mutual dissent so thick that you could cut a slice off it.

Neighbours, suspicious of where the other stood on this momentous journey to choosing who leads Nigeria henceforth to 2023, outdid one another in mutual acts of self-destruction. While all these went on, politicians shouldered heavy sleaze money into their personal accounts, consolidating where they stood and where they will stand in case the chess

game which to them election represents, go in their favour. You will be shocked to hear that many of the political parties had already shared governmental positions, even before election.

On the list of the casualties we suffered as a people on the road to the election was the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Walter Onnoghen. The Nigerian judiciary, whose respect and worth had suffered terrible bashes in decades, was finally hit by a cyclone of unimaginable proportion. A few weeks ago, the CJN was flung in the dock like an ordinary felon, castrated no doubt by politics and perhaps, greed. Politics because it was obvious that if Onnoghen had stood in amity with his traducers, he would today be enjoying the comfort of the maggots alleged to surround his hallowed stool. Greed because, either rightly or wrongly, those unearthed maggots oozing out of the CJ’s robe are too disgusting to countenance. But for politics that blinded the presidency’s sense of judgment, methinks details of the maggots ought to have been secretly waved in Onnoghen’s face at a tete-a-tete with the president and thereafter asked to honourably step down, rather than this global tar-brush of Nigeria and its highest echelon of justice.

Two major indices – economy and corruption – were high on the cards.

Perhaps because of the parlous economy and the promise or mis-promise of redemption of the country by politicians, Nigerians canvassed where they stood on the political divides with vigour unprecedented. I submit that Nigeria was nowhere located in the equation of electoral consideration as we went into the election yesterday. As federalists always maintain, due to the pseudo federal practice in Nigeria since the collapse of the First Republic, Nigeria has become, borrowing the inscrutable quote of President Muhammadu Buhari, a country for everyone but for no one in particular. In the election that just held, people merely sought the political leader who would change the grueling course of their personal experience of excruciating pains in the hands of a cumulative badly run Nigerian economy.

So also was corruption a very potent referent of decision-making. Trust politicians: though they are the most culpable in the corruption cycle we found ourselves, it was convenient for them to turn around to make same issue a major campaign mantra. Nigerians will be thoroughly shocked if they find out that corruption pervaded the two camps which attempted to beatify themselves publicly in exchange for the people’s votes. Those who were once

in government seeking the people’s nod to come back and those who are current tenants of power, no pun intended, have sold their hearts to the biblical Mammon, whose seat of empire is Nigeria, for pittance, so much that they are irredeemably sworn to offer propitiations to this god. When you hear them promise the electorate to fight or stamp out corruption, that statement itself is a very corrupt cliché that should earn its author a judicial sentence.

Pardon the heresy: the clay with which providence created the Nigerian politician is watered with the trough of corruption.

One very commendable trait Nigerians demonstrated in the period leading to the election was the vociferous defence of their political stand. A news report a couple of months back was to the effect that a man divorced his wife for supporting Buhari. Because of where they stood, cudgels have been wielded by otherwise gentlemen against one another. The social media, during this period, did the most irreparable damage to the psyche and emotions of Nigerians.

Though some of the views were traded due to their political affiliations, there were thousands of people who stood to gain nothing personally from the win of either of the candidates but who fought for them as if their lives depended on it. Sabre-rattling of the most corrosive hue flew right, left and center on the social media; ingenuous and creative posts were made to either demonize or odorize the two presidential contenders – Buhari and Atiku Abubakar. Anyone who supported the former was saint and supporters of the latter were messengers of corruption. Shunned of the low level of hatred and intolerance exhibited, the canvass of politicking was actually desirable, demonstrating how feelings for and against right and wrong were deep-seated in the hearts of Nigerians.

Wherever the electoral pendulum swings in a few days’ time as INEC announces the winner of the election, we will all suffer the consequences of our electoral decisions. If Abubakar is announced president of Nigeria and he begins to play Ali Baba and his gang of thieves on the Nigerian economy, we will suffer the collateral damage arising from our decision to elect him. If, on the reverse, Buhari is elected and he continues to foist on us his Stone Age despotism and crude nepotism, none of us will run to Ghana or Niger Republic; we will all be here and weather the hell of our decision. When you look at the vultures hovering round the two presidential candidates, you will be sorry for Nigeria. These are tested leeches,

blood-sucking vermin and naira-thirsty hounds thirsty to devour the Nigerian economy; who will murder their father and rope their mother without batting an eyelid. America is today suffering the consequences of her own decision to vote as president, one of the most divisive American ever, a man who has exposed to the whole world the underbelly and gross limitations of White House’s hitherto held impregnable leadership constitution.

Head or tail, as Nigerians, we cannot run away from the aftermath of the decision we took yesterday. If, conversely, either of Buhari and Abubakar becomes president and Nigeria turns a new leaf for good, with a booming economy and prosperity as consort, her battered integrity suddenly retrieved from the Hades where we flung it and the vermin that daily suck our economy driven to Siberia, we will remember yesterday and be proud of our decision. If you ask me, I don’t see the latter happening.

We have voted one of two people whose presence on the ballot box is a calamity ab initio. The UK Guardian put our choice succinctly recently: One between an infernal despot – and I add, a man with a Stone Age understanding of economy and development; and a thief (whether real or imagined). As I have once said however, it would have been self-defeatist or escapist to refrain from voting yesterday. We must choose between these two thrown on our laps by the Nigerian electoral system. So we voted a candidate who, in our very subjective and most times, myopic view (because we are actually not privy to details of the private and public composition of these two aspirants to the presidency of Nigeria, which would have made us take informed stand) will, as the street lingo says, butter our bread.

No matter where the pendulum of the presidential election swings, the Nigerian electorate, throughout the pendency of the campaign and election, demonstrated a deep hunger and commitment to what it believed in. The social media, for instance, was a very fertile ground for the articulation of that thirst. This was however manifested in very crude and most times, incoherent manner. If only the country could be at the base of such thirst for a good society, Nigeria would be on its way to becoming a better country. This is why, not minding whoever gets the nod of INEC to lead Nigeria for the next four years, we must harvest that same thirst, that same articulation and channel them towards a better society. It is only then that the offerings of the last few months of electioneering would not be a waste.

An election of tears, sorrow and blood

He woke up to a bright and sunny morning. It is an important day; a time to do his bounden duty to his country. Nothing betokened that it will be his final rite to this “shrine”. Instead of taking his vote, it took his life.

A young voter killed at a polling unit in Anyigba, Dekina local government area, Kogi state. He was allegedly killed during an argument over who he should vote for. He died violently exercising his right in a place that should have been a refuge.

In Rivers, the grim-reaper’s scythe reportedly hacked down two persons. And there are reports of unmitigated violence at different places in the state. An agent of a political party was shot dead by security agents.

In Delta, three voters were reportedly killed by the crimson bullets of some armed thugs at a polling unit in Amukpe area of Sapele town. The violators were said to have shot at voters as they queued to cast their ballots.

In Bayelsa, two persons were reported killed in Membe after violence broke out in the area.

In Lagos, thugs set ablaze thumb-printed ballot papers at Ohafia Street, Ago Palace Way in Isolo local government area. The hoodlums did not let up until they were accomplished. They went to other voting stations around the area to smash ballot boxes and intimidate voters. This picture also captures the exercise in some other parts of the state.

In Kaduna, there are reports of a

blockade in some areas, impeding voters from exercising their rights.

In Akwa Ibom, there is a flurry of reports of ballot-box snatching.

Also, in Ondo, there are depressing reports of hijack of ballot boxes involving some highprofile individuals. Really, there are many sombre reports, too exhausting to tabulate.

And there have been other tales of tears, sorrow and blood from across the country. It has been one Saturday of tears, sorrow and blood.

How can Nigeria win in these circumstances? For how long will our democracy be fecundated by the blood of innocents? For how long will our elections be marred by hijack of electoral materials, intimidation of voters and

violence?

An election should not cost the lives of citizens. Even if one soul is lost, the exercise is a “blood election”. Can we get it right?

I think, the reason for “bloodballoting” here is because of the stakes. The stakes are corrupt.

Political power is often for abusive use and for not citizens’ protection and betterment. I do not think any politician will sponsor violence against opponents or a voting section he considers “opposition”, if he really wants power for good of the people.

With the wide outbreak of violence, hijack of ballot boxes, intimidation of voters and the killings across the country, regardless of who wins this election, Nigeria has clearly lost.

Editorial Commentary Need to cherish our treasures in years ahead

I saw an article by Mr. Emeka Obasi in the Vanguard recently, titled “Forget it, Nigeria Can’t Work”.

I wanted to share the article because of the first part which was some sort of brief anthropological study on the different components of Nigeria, but I refrained due to its conclusion.

Mr. Obasi reminded us of how many languages in Nigeria are similar, denoting the fact that the different tribes, which are now labouring so hard to show the world ‘how different we are’ have been interacting, intermixing, inter-trading and inter-marrying and, of course, warring for ages. It’s just quite interesting that in this information epoch that we have communications gadgets aplenty, we aren’t hearing each other like our ancestors often did. Mr. Obasi’s title and conclusions were surprising, given his many examples of our similarity. I also disagreed with the usual manner of dumping every blame on the doorsteps of the British.

In my view, we were a conquered territory, but there was nothing the British did to us that we hadn’t done to ourselves (well almost), or that they (the white people) hadn’t done to themselves. Ireland suffered even more in the hands of the English. Imagine being colonised since the 16th century, and only getting partial independence (attainment of Republic of Ireland/Southern Ireland) in 1922. For as long as we still talk of why the British merged us without our consent, we are still mentally conquered. We have to move on.

Emeka Obasi observed start realities in our languages that shows clearly that every culture takes a little from its eastern, western, northern and southern neighbours and that no culture is absolutely distinct in Nigeria. He observed that Abeokuta is called Ebeokute in Igbo, that the Oba of Lagos does not dispute his Bini heritage and that ‘Eko’ is a Bini word (also ‘Idumota’, ‘Idumagbo’, ‘Iduganran’ – my addition), and that any new Obi of Iselle-Uku has to travel to Benin as part of the installation rites (I believe there are many royal fathers around Benin who do that too). I have other additions. The idea of ‘money’ is almost universal to southern Nigeria. ‘Owo’ in modern and mainstream Yoruba up to Oyo, means money, but watch what happens next. As you move up north in Yoruba land, in Ondo and Ekiti States, it becomes ‘Eho’, or just ‘Eo’. Then it becomes ‘Igho’ in Edo and most of Delta State, only to transform to ‘Ego’ in Igboland.

Mr’ Obasi mentioned the similarity between monkey (Enwe) in Igbo, which is called Eme in Bini language. I actually read from Nnamdi Azikiwe’s autobiography that his Onitsha people migrated from Benin after a disagreement, hence the presence of Onicha Ugbo, Onicha Olona, Onicha Ukwu and other similar sounding settlements and towns along that axis. I also discovered upon interactions with Igala friends that several of their words are the same with Yoruba. Even up to Nupe. At least six out of 10 numbers are pronounced the same between Yoruba and the Igala/Nupe language. I could go on and on.

There is something I picked up from playing Scrabble back in the day when we used to check the meaning of words from Chambers Dictionary. After each word, there would be an etymology describing, shortly, the origin of that word.

What was remarkable for me then was the fact that almost every English word originates from outside England. Most of the words have Latin, Greek, French, German or other origins in a way that shows how interlinked the histories of the European people are. The unwritten lesson is the mutual respect that the European people have for each other till date. At the end, they know they are brothers, despite fighting two extremely costly world wars, and hundreds of civil wars and conflicts, some of which still simmer today.

The Europeans know that unity is the way forward for their people. This they have achieved today. I believe within Nigeria, and even bleeding into our neighbouring countries, we have exactly the same type of sociology. Indeed, I learnt from Mr. Obasi’s article that the Angles (a Germanic tribe) conquered southern Britain in the 5th Century (hence the name England), and that the Gauls (now called French) gave the name Germanus (neighbours) to Germany. This is how the world has evolved. We should stick to honest analysis. It is when we insert tribal superiorities, and begin our Hausa/ Yoruba/Fulani/Igbo brickbats that every logical analysis breaks down.

We do have treasures though. Look at the language that those young Fulani boys speak to the cows? I have watched as they command cows. I then realised that they have a deep, inexplicable relationship with the cows that go beyond commercial interests. Each cow has a name and understands instructions from the herder. Again this priceless culture is being hoarded like we black people hoard everything. The example of the white man is that it is better to be open with information, and to document properly. We can only increase knowledge, understanding and our humanity that way. But what our ancestors did was to document little or nothing and that is what we are doing

today. That is even why it was easy to colonise us, steal everything we had and usurp our ability for independent thought. In matters of science – medicine especially – our ancestors passed down the codes to select people and many times, we lost trail of a lot of our treasures. Now we have to purchase the same medicines after some refining and at much higher costs, from abroad.

Another great treasure of ours is the Yoruba culture of cognomens (orikis). As our older ones are dying, only those who stayed back in the villages now understand the idea behind orikis. Yet these orikis tell eloquent histories of tribes, clans and families. As I have suggested elsewhere, there is a lot of work for our university students to do, in documenting relevant aspects of our cultures and also adding value to society. Imagine if a massive project is initiated to collate our people’s histories all over Nigeria, and we can develop a Nigerian Google that incorporates all information that anyone could seek about Nigeria – historical and contemporary. Imagine if we could find the orikis of any Yoruba family and create genealogical trees for everyone in Nigeria. Imagine how that feeds into a larger national identity programme, and the pride of a people.

It took a white man to speak on TEDX about a phenomenal programme that is indigenous to Nigeria – the Igbo apprenticeship system – for us to take it serious. I have been speaking about this to my usually self-critical friends from East of the Niger without much success over time. This is an indigenous system which has positioned the Igbos in good stead all over the world. With little education, many Igbo men have become persons of substance. I believe this is also behind the educational excellence of Igbos in Nigeria today, because good education is now being financed for the new generation. This apprenticeship system, which emanated from a sense of self-responsibility and solidarity created by the civil war, is the reason why Igbo businesses are all over the world – because there is a limit to how much they could expand within Nigeria. There is however a slowdown of late, because there have been some breaches of the unwritten contracts. Some ‘masters’ renege and refuse to ‘settle’ their apprentices. Some apprentices also betray the trust of their masters. This is natural for such a system. However, I am not sure many local researches have been carried out to at least document this phenomenon; for example to estimate how much wealth this system has created or the estimated future value of the wealth that has been unleashed. That is the approach white people will take, given the same opportunity.

There are many interesting phenomena in Nigeria that makes us an interesting people – even beyond their tourism value. There is a village/small town in this country where the language of all the males differ from that of all the females. There are matrilineal cultures where women rule and dominate all over Nigeria (feminists may study that). There are places where they never kill but worship some animals, like snakes, monkeys, and this has shaped the behavioural pattern of those animals among friendly humans. There are animals that are peculiar to parts of Nigeria. There are peculiar histories and peculiar behaviours – again I will not admit Dalung’s naked dance as a thing of repute. Nakedness is everybody’s first costume. Tribes and clans that still go naked may not fit into today’s modern society. There has to be something more they bring to the table.

In all of Nigeria’s uniqueness and beauty, we have continued to wreak injustice on one another. Nigeria is a land of cheating; a class society. Those who lead Nigeria in the main are feudalists who believe in racial, tribal, religious and personal superiority. The mismanagement of Nigeria’s resources, the wanton wastage, the cavalier nepotism, inefficiencies and mediocrity that is collapsing Nigeria today, stems from this ill-luck we have had with leadership.

Every country naturally chooses its leaders from among its people. Leaders therefore come with biases and belief systems which may unfortunately hold a people down, or much worse, destroy them. Nigeria’s leadership selection and trajectory has almost achieved its annihilation.

Yet there is cause to cheer. The opportunities are thinning out rapidly but we can still see some chinks of hope, and we know that achieving a turnaround will be swift if we should get lucky and torpedo this present crop of leaders. How that will happen, no one is sure but some of us are striving daily to barrage the system in the hope that something will give. On the day this happens, we will see how easy it is to unite the people of this country, to get those who are enjoying undue largesse to back down some, to unleash the wealth of this country, to get our youth to be extremely productive, to build Nigeria, a country laying waste presently, and receding to an inglorious dark age.

Until that happens, happy new 2019.

Our POSITION 2019 general election: The need to let peace reign The 2019 general election was one election that has been anticipated by all Nigerians and even non-Nigerians in the last four years when the last general election held in the country.

With every election held by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) since the 2015 election among the many off season elections, many Nigerians considered it a test run for the 2019 election which they believe is the main thing.

The high interest of many people in the election which they awaited with bathed breath may not be unconnected with the outcome of the 2015 election, when for the first time in the political history of the country a ruling party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), lost its position at the centre to the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) and yielded the seat to them.

So, the 2019 election was considered as the return match and many were only waiting to see how the election will turn out and with the postponement of the first sets of the election which is the Presidential and National Assembly election by INEC from February 16 to February 23, the tension was further heightened.

When the election however kicked off on the set date of February 23 across the nation, not many were surprised that in many places it lived up to their fears that it may be marred by violence.

Across many states of the South South and South West, violence and snatching of ballot boxes were the order of the day as it turned bloody and tragic in some states with no fewer than 20 people hacked to death.

The affected states are Borno, where two people were killed; Bayelsa (two); Rivers (seven); Yobe (two); Kogi (two); Ebonyi (two); Delta (two); Lagos, Oyo, Zamfara, which recoded one death each.

Incidents of unbridled vote buying, ballot box snatching by hoodlums, shooting at polling units, characterised the polls in a number of states, including Lagos where some hoodlums burnt ballot boxes.

In Rivers State, a former chairman of Andoni Local Government Area, Mowan Etete, his elder brother as well as his cousin and three other persons were said to have been killed in Asarama and Abonema, Akuku-Toru Local Government Area of the state during the polls.

Also in Zamfara State, gunmen suspected to be assassins killed the All Progressives Congress (APC) chairman of Yandoto Daji Ward in Tsafe Local Government Area, Alhaji Yusuf, few hours to the commencement of the election.

The ward chairman was reportedly killed by gunmen in the early hours of Saturday at his Yandoton daji residence few kilometers from Gusau the state capital.

According to the family source, late Alhaji Yusuf was fully prepared for the Saturday’s election, but was attacked and killed by suspected assassins for unknown reasons.

These developments are very worrisome and should be a cause for concern for well-meaning members of the society, as it does not portray Nigeria as a serious country and Nigerians as decent people.

If for the purpose of re-electing a government or changing a government a nation can witness the level of violence and bloodbath so far seen in Nigeria, there is then the need to worry about what is to come when the governorship and House of Assembly election hold on March 9 and thereafter.

Worried by this development, the Presidential candidate of the PDP, Atiku Abubakar, has issued a statement denouncing it, expressing his grief over the development.

He noted that a number of Nigerians citizens as verified by local and international observers, have died since the election began on Saturday, February 23, 2019.

“Even more citizens have been wounded, maimed or in some way affected by the violence perpetuated by some misguided persons in our midst.

“My heart goes out to the families and loved ones of the departed and those affected by the violence. I have also initiated steps to assist those in need of medical or other assistance.

“Even one death is too much for me to accept. I hold the life of every Nigerian and indeed everyone in Nigeria as sacrosanct.

“I call on all Nigerians to remember the words of former President Goodluck Jonathan, which I quoted on February 13, 2019, “My ambition is not worth the blood of any Nigerian”.

“And it is not just my ambition. I amplify that statement

today and declare to Nigeria and the world that NOBODY’s political ambition is worth the blood of any citizen. Nobody means nobody.

“As Nigerian citizens, the Peoples Democratic Party, the All Progressives Congress and any other party are our secondary identities. I have every reason to be proud of my party, but this is not about the PDP. Today, my party and your party should be Nigeria.

“As such, I call for an end to all violence. I also call for an end to every rhetoric that promotes violence,” Atiku stated.

When political parties and their candidates at the various levels, especially at the presidential level signed the peace accord with fanfare, it was aimed, we believe, at avoiding incidents like the ones witnessed on Saturday and this obviously has made nonsense of the peace accord, as we hold all political gladiators liable for this unnecessary loss of lives across the country.

This is a time for all politicians, leaders of political parties and candidates of the various political parties to know that election is only a game and when you loss today, you can win tomorrow and besides, there is a provision for anyone to seek redress in a constitutional way through the various tribunals if they feel cheated, instead of sponsoring violence either against the people or against the opponents.

We believe that every Nigerian should add a voice to this and condemn in its entirety any form of violence or injury and worse of it death as a result of election to elect anyone into any office whatsoever.

We therefore call on security agencies to buckle up in their responsibilities and do more to ensure that no life of anyone within Nigerian territory, no matter the tribe, region or religion is lost.

This is a time for all hands to be on deck, especially among all arms of law enforcement agencies to ensure that in the coming election everything is done to forestall a repeat of the kind of violence, injuries and deaths witnessed on Saturday, February 23 across the country, as anything short of that will be unacceptable to peace loving Nigerians who are in the overwhelming majority.

APC calls for cancellation of Presidential/ Short News National Assembly elections in Enugu NRM to boycott guber election in Zamfara Moses Oyediran, Enugu The Enugu State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to cancel the Presidential and National Assembly Elections held in Enugu State on February 23, 2019.

Addressing journalists yesterday on behalf of APC candidates that participated in the Elections, Chairman of the APC in Enugu State, Dr Ben Nwoye, alleged that fake INEC Adhoc staffs were attached in all the polling units and voting points to direct unenlightened/uneducated voters to thumbprint/vote for the PDP to the exclusion to their party agents.

He further alleged that Corp members

posted to various units and voting points received inducement from PDP to compromise their duties in the election.

Nwoye continued that there were apparent vote buying by PDP members in almost every polling unit and voting points Alleging further, Nwoye claimed that majority of their party agents at the polling units and voting points at ward levels were denied copies of result sheets allegedly collated by collation officers for the Presidential, Federal Constituency and Senatorial District.

“Fake INEC Adhoc staffs were attached in all the polling units and voting points to direct unenlightened/uneducated voters to thumbprint/vote for the PDP to the exclusion to our party agents.

“Therefore, it is our contention that the

purported results Collated and being expected to be submitted to your office do not represent the result of the 23rd February, 2019 Presidential/ National Assembly election in Enugu State.

“The ward collation officers greatly compromised themselves by collating results different from that generated from the majority of the respective polling units” Nwoye told the Enugu State INEC Electoral Commissioner, (REC) Nwoye therefore requested on behalf of the candidates to the Enugu State INEC REC to cancel the February 23 elections.

He also called for the arrest and prosecution of those that allegedly perpetrated the electoral fraud including corps members.

The Zamfara Chapter of the Nigeria Rescue Movement (NRM) has said it will not participate in the governorship and state assembly elections slated for March 9.

The party’s governorship candidate, Alhaji Saidu Dansadau, disclosed this at a news conference in Gusau on Sunday.

He said that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had failed in its promise of conducting free, fair, credible and acceptable elections in the state.

“We, as a party will not participate in the coming governorship and house of assembly elections in protest of the failure of INEC to live up to its promises of free, fair and credible polls.

“The just concluded Presidential/National Assembly elections in the state have proven that the INEC and the security agencies will not be fair to other political parties.

‘This is we have watched them working against ensuring the credibility of the elections.

“The NRM will therefore not participate in the governorship and state assembly elections scheduled for March 9, until the INEC nullifies the Presidential and National Assembly elections held yesterday, Feb. 23,” he said.

Fayemi hails election victory, tasks APC winners on humility

Ekiti State Governor, Dr Kayode Fayemi on Sunday said he remained grateful to God for the outcome of the peaceful conduct of Saturday’s Presidential and National Assembly elections in the State.

The ruling APC in the state has already won two senatorial and two House of Representatives in results of the election declared so far by INEC. Fayemi expressed gratitude to Ekiti people for their peaceful and orderly conduct during the election.

The governor gave the commendation during Sunday service at the Government House Chapel, with Prince Dayo Adeyeye, Senator-Elect for Ekiti Central District.

Others present at service are member-Elect, House of Representatives, Ekiti Central 1, Mr Sola Fatoba and Prof. Dupe Adelabu, a former Deputy Governor of the state.

The Governor, who recalled that the congregation prayed for the peaceful conduct of the general elections, said that God had indeed answered the prayers as the elections were held in a peaceful atmosphere in the state.

He however sympathised with families of victims of election violence as reported in some parts of the country, while urging Nigerians to always seek for peace at all time.

“I am not here to grade elections or anything like that. I am just here to say that there has been enough violence.

“Enough people have died. I am here today to speak with all the different candidates and party leaders,” he said.

The Director- General of Voice of Nigeria (VON), Chief Osita Okechukwu, on Sunday lauded the Federal Government and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for organising free, fair and credible elections.

Okechukwu spoke in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Enugu.

He said the electoral body became more visible under the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari.

According to him, this is responsible for the free, fair and credible conduct of the elections.

He also expressed delight in the civic and responsible manner all the security agencies had conducted their affairs during the polls.

Okechukwu explained that the security agencies rose to the occasion and displayed high professionalism throughout the exercise.

Commenting on the turnout of voters in Enugu, his home town, Okechukwu said that it was historic.

He said that the participation of voters had given hope for the deepening of democracy.

Domestic observers in Gombe rate polls peaceful, laud high turnout of voters

Domestic Observers for the Presidential and National Assembly elections in Gombe on Sunday described election in the South Senatorial District as most peaceful with high turnout of voters.

The Chief Orientation and Mobilisation Officer, National Orientation Agency (NOA) in Kaltungo Council, Mr Agrih Sukukuru, spoke in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Kaltungo.

Sukukuru said he has been observing elections in Nigeria since 1999, saying that he never witnessed elections like this.

According to him, I was able to go round many polling units and observed that the election was peaceful and orderly.

Sukukuru said the electorate displayed maturity on the announcement of results at their respective polling units.

He attributed the success recorded to fervent prayers and high level of awareness among others factors.

The mobilisation officer also observed that some INEC ad hoc staff were not fully trained, saying some of them found it difficult to fill in the result sheets.

According to him, this resulted in the delay of submission of the results to their respective collation centres.

Presidential/ NASS polls: INEC acknowledges Short News challenges, sanctions erring poll officials ASUU condemns AAU over suspension of Tunde Opalana, Abuja Consequently upon critical review of the conduct of Saturday’s Presidential and National Assembly elections nationwide, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) though expressed satisfaction with conduct of Nigerian electorate, identified certain challenges before and during voting.

Briefing the press on Sunday at the Aso Hall of the International Conference Center, Abuja, INEC chairman, Prof Mahmood Yakubu said there were cases of late arrival of personnel and material resulting in loss of voting hours, technical hitches associated with smart card readers in some polling units and pockets of crisis leading to postponement of elections in few area of Rivers, Lagos and Anambra states.

He said the Commission was happy with the general peaceful and patriotic conduct of citizens.

“Elections are all about the people and once again, Nigerians have demonstrated extra-ordinary resilience and abiding faith in democracy and the electoral process”, he said.

He also reiterated INEC’s commitment to protecting the sanctity of the ballot and the integrity of the choices made by Nigerians at the polls.

Late last night, the Commission met and reviewed the processes and challenges arising from the conduct of the elections based on reports

received from our State offices nationwide as well as information harvested from our various citizens’ contact platforms.

The Commission acknowledges that there were places where personnel and materials did not arrive on time resulting in delays in opening of polls. We responded by extending the voting period to compensate for the initial loss of time.

Our reports indicate that many citizens who would have otherwise been disenfranchised had the opportunity to vote.

“Similarly, in spite of our best effort to enhance the functionality of the Smart Card Readers (SCRs), we experienced technical glitches in some locations. Through the deployment of 8,809 Area Technical Support (RATECHS) that we engaged as ad hoc, many of these glitches were successfully rectified which enabled voting to take place seamlessly in the affected PUs nationwide.

“Yet there were places where voting could not proceed as a result of the failure of the SCRs. In addition, there are places where materials arrived late for voting to proceed.

“After consultation with the communities involved, and in line with our Regulations and Guidelines, new SCRs have been reconfigured and deployed for elections in the affected polling units. Right now elections are ongoing in some PUs in Abia, Bayelsa, Benue, Plateau, Zamfara and one Polling Unit in Binji LGA of Sokoto State and Kuje Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). We are determined that the vote

of every Nigerian is important and must count.

“We have received preliminary reports and are closely monitoring the situation in Rivers, particularly Bonny and Akoku-Toru LGAs. We are similarly awaiting the detailed report from our Imo office particularly in respect of the Owerri Municipal LGA. We are also aware of the incidents in some parts of Lagos, particularly Okota.

“We are similarly aware of the incidence of intimidation, abduction, hostage-taking and violence unleashed on election officials in some States, notably Akwa Ibom, and the burning down of a vehicle conveying materials used for the election yesterday in Dekina LGA of Kogi State. Some Youth Corps members serving as ad hoc staff were also attacked in Osun State.

“While in all these attacks, election staff sustained injuries, we have unfortunately recorded the first fatality in Rivers State. An ad hoc staff, Mrs. Ibisaki Amachree, was hit by a bullet while returning from election duty in Degema.

We condemn these attacks and will forward a comprehensive report to the security agencies for expeditious investigation and prosecution of those involved.

“We have also received reports of voters who presented genuine PVCs read by the SCRs but were not allowed to vote because their names were not on the register of voters. We have been confronted by such a situation in one of the offseason elections conducted by the Commission.

Titus Akhigbe, Benin-City The Benin Zone of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), weekend, condemned in totality the suspension of the branch chairman of Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, Dr. Monday Igbafen over a case of alleged sexual harassment and sex-for-marks.

2019 election: INEC shuts Brass collation centre over alleged election manipulation Akam James, Yenagoa The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) was forced to shut down its Brass collation centre in Brass Local Government Area of Bayelsa state over alleged manipulation of results by the All Progressive Congress (APC) and relocated collation to Yenagoa.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had called on the INEC not to accept results from Bassambiri area in Nembe LGA for the Brass/Nembe Federal Constituency election in Bayelsa State, saying it was marred by violence and hijack of materials.

The results for Ogbolomabiri area arrived the centre at about 6pm but trouble started when the State agent of the PDP and other party agents protested against the alleged forgery of Bassambiri results by the APC. The result that seems to favour the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate in the area, Isreal Sunny-Goli, was yet to arrived the INEC collation centre in Twon-Brass at about 6:30pm Sunday.

Election violence: Senator Abe mourns Etete, other victims in Rivers Warns politicians against spilling blood Amaka Agbu, Port Harcourt The Senator representing Rivers South-East Senatorial District in the National Assembly, Magnus Ngei Abe, is mourning the death of the former Chairman of Andoni Local Government Area, Chief Mowan Etete and others who lost their lives in what he described as the needless orgy of violence in Rivers State during last Saturday’s presidential/National Assembly elections.

In a statement he personally signed on hearing the sad news of the killing of Chief Etete and his two relatives, Senator Abe warned politicians against playing politics of bitterness and spilling of blood.

He stated that politics must grow beyond primitive level, even as he called for the arrest and prosecution of those behind the heinous murders of innocent Rivers men and women.

The statement read in part: “Unbelievable!

My friend and longtime associate, Hon. Mowan Etete and other innocent Rivers people are dead today simply because they came out to answer the call of their country and perform their civic obligation.

“I had warned repeatedly that we should not stoke the drums of war and Rivers people should no longer forgive any politician no matter how highly placed that is culpable in the orgy of violence that has characterized our recent past.

“Our politics must begin to move beyond the primitive stage. No politician should continue to claim the power to deliver any unit not to talk of a ward, a local government or a state,” the Senator insisted He continued: “We must imbibe the true spirit of democracy which means that the vote of the Governor, the vote of the Minister, the vote of the Senator and the vote of the

Commissioner and that of the Chairman will have the same value as that of the Bricklayer, the Driver, the Nurse, and the Unemployed Youth.

“No one should have the power to promise or guarantee the vote of one Nigerian to a third party. If you are good to your people, you can appeal to them but you must respect their wishes where it differs from your own,” he stated.

The statement further said that the murder of Mowan, and other men and women must be treated as a heinous crime, adding that it was not just the gunmen but those behind the scenes who planned and orchestrated that violence must also be brought to book.

He maintained that Rivers state must grow beyond the politics of blood, saying, “We can no longer allow our dear state to be a byword for electoral violence and bloodshed in the comity of states.

Senator Suleiman Adokwe, a Senator representing Nasarawa Southern Senatorial Zone, narrowly escaped death as stone and javelin were thrown at his official car sport utility vehicle (SUV) at about 12: 45 pm in Lafia.

Daily Times, reports that the SUV where the senator drove in was badly damaged, the wind screen and rear wind shield were completely destroyed.

Speaking with newsmen shortly after the attack, Adokwe said he was lucky to escape alive and thanked God for sparing his life.

According to him, the attack took place at Saint Williams collation centre and was masterminded by suspected All Progressives Congress (APC) thugs groomed by Gov. Umaru Al-Makura, his close opponent, contesting for the same Nasarawa Southern Senatorial Zone.

Sen. Adokwe also alleged that “we have been receiving report all over our constituency of result alterations, forcing innocent Corp members to change election results.

“At police barrack polling unit, hoodlums attacked electorates and completely destroyed ballot papers and results sheets. In fact, Doma LGA is under Serge by the ruling party”, he alleged.

Commissioner of Police in the state, Ademola Emmanuel Longe confirmed the incident, assured of additional in trouble polling units and collation centre.

INEC warns against results on social media

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has advised the public to be wary of election “results’’ circulating on social media.

In a message on its verified Twitter handle, @inecnigeria, on Sunday afternoon, the commission said it was the only body constitutionally empowered to declare the results of the elections.

“It has also come to our notice that some election `results’ are circulating on the various social media platforms.

“Kindly disregard such ‘results’ as only INEC is constitutionally empowered to declare the outcome of the elections,’’ it said.

Minutes earlier, INEC said on the same platform that elections were still ongoing in some areas of the country.

It added that detailed reports of such areas would be communicated at a news briefing scheduled to hold at the National Collation Centre in Abuja at 3 p.m. (NAN)

The returning officer, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Zetawa Ward, Kano Municipal, Sani Spain has called for the cancellation of elections at the Zetawa Ward over what he described as electoral irregularities.

According to him, his party (PDP), observed series of irregularities

such as over voting and faulty card reader which could not be used for the accreditation process at pulling boxes, 031, 018, 032, 033 and 025 in Zetawa Ward.

He said, the party would channel its complaints to the appropriate authorities to ensure that INEC do the needful under such circumstances.

The Collation Officer (CO) Mannir Sabi’u in charge of Kano Municipal while addressing the complaint

brought before him at the collation Centre, regretted the development but advised those with complaints to allow the collation exercise continue and file in their queries at the INEC head office.

Confirming the incidence, APC returning Officer, Faruk Shekarau said the incidence reported by the PDP was true but has been resolved between party agents from the pulling unit.

Nigerians will have to wait till Monday February 25 (today) for the result of the Presidential election conducted nationwide last Saturday.

Kwara: Voters’ remain undaunted despite heavy security deployment -Baraje Kehinde Akinpelu, Ilorin Acting National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Abubakar Kawau Baraje has expressed delight over large turnout of voters respite heavy military deployment to the state.

Polio: Aliko Dangote Foundation boosts Nigeria’s certification by WHO Releases feedback polio eradication report

Ladesope Ladelokun, Lagos As Nigeria eagerly awaits her certification as polio free by the World Health Organisation (WHO), the Aliko Dangote Foundation (ADF) has boosted the nation’s efforts to finally end the scourge which had affected thousands of children across the country.

The organisation, in support for government’s efforts to end polio, has released detailed report which showed the impact of partnership agreement on routine immunisation (RI) and polio eradication, which was signed between the ADF, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) and six Northern States comprising Kano, Bauchi, Kaduna, Sokoto, Borno and Yobe.

The 114-page report, which showcased the efforts of the ADF in the fight against polio, was released in Lagos recently. It catalogued RI activities before and after the MoU was signed between the tripartite partners, with a marked upsurge in RI efforts after the MoUs were signed.

It also revealed that hundreds of thousands of under-5 children, who are most prone to polio, have been successfully immunised against the virus.

The document, which contains analyses, interviews and pictures, was based on findings obtained from a recent spotlight visit undertaken

by the philanthropic arm of the Dangote Group to the six MoU partner states, while tracking the progress made by each of the six states on RI and polio eradication under the partnership agreements.

The report revealed that the tripartite agreements have helped to strengthen RI and also provided technical, material and financial support to the partner States and their relevant agencies and stakeholders; with resultant rise in RI coverage for eligible children in both rural and urban areas, including those in hard-to-reach and inaccessible communities; and also greater involvement of traditional and religious leaders in the process.

It also highlighted the back-up efforts of the ADF and BMGF through improved logistics; which have ensured better access to healthcare in both rural and urban communities in the six Northern partner States; some of whom have devoted higher parts of their annual budgets to ensure adequate healthcare for millions of their citizens.

Aside the financial and logistics support for RI in the six MoU partner States, the ADF has also constructed 11 Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) in 7 LGAs in Kano State and 2 PHCs in 2 LGAs in Yobe State.

Speaking on the impact of the MoU on RI, the Managing Director/CEO of the Aliko Dangote Foundation, Zouera Youssoufou said the State

governments have abided by the letter and spirit of the MoU, which has largely accounted for the success of the RI process and stamping out of the scourge of polio.

ADF, which was endowed with $1.25 billion by its Chairman, Aliko Dangote, has actively supported the polio eradication activities in the partner states, through provision of funding and logistics under a Memorandum of Understanding between the six Northern States and the two foundations. The MoU, which initially began with Kano State in 2012, was renewed and extended last year.

Speaking further, Youssoufou, said: “My assessment is that the tripartite MoUs have been very useful tools in supporting the six states in effectively implementing vaccine programmes, and by that same token strengthening the capacity of the existing primary health care system to deliver needed services to the community. This improved system is what will allow us to help deliver our nutrition programme through the PHC system.”

Responding to inquiries on the published Polio Report and the feedback from the partner states, the Foundation Chief Executive Yousouffou said, “Yes, the States are all pleased to see that we are documenting our work with them. But we still have more work to do in terms of socialising the report with the States.”

Governor Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa State, on Sunday alleged that a photographer attached to the Government House, Yenagoa, was shot, and a ward chairman of Peoples Democratic Party killed by the military.

Dickson alleged that the military colluded with some politicians to perpetrate the violence, which he said, characterised Saturday’s Presidential and National Assembly polls in the state.

The PDP ward chairman, Mr Seidougha Taribi and the photographer, Reginald Dei, were reportedly shot during the elections in Oweikorogha, Southern Ijaw Local Government Area.

Dei is in critical condition at Diete Koki Memorial Hospital Opolo, Yenagoa, but Taribi died before getting to the hospital.

At a news conference on Sunday, the governor commiserated with the families of all those that lost their lives to electoral violence during the polls. ”The two were shot by soldiers and my condolences go to the families of those that were killed. ”It is regrettable that people have to die because of elections and we have been advocating against electoral violence in the past eight years. ”I commend the people of Ekeremor and Brass, including INEC, for resisting the pressure to sabotaging the voting process, and people actually voted there for the first time.

Nasarawa witnesses peaceful Presidential, National Assembly polls Augustine Kuza, Lafia

As Nigerians came out last Saturday to exercise their franchise across the country, Nasarawa State witnessed peaceful exercise in some part of the state.

Our Correspondent who went round some Local government in the southern senatorial zone of the state reported that election was peaceful and rancour free.

It was also gathered that all the areas visited in the zone, like Obi, Keana, Lafia and Awe Local government, electorates were seen at various polling units in their numbers waiting to exercise their franchise.

In an interview with the Commissioner of Land and Survey in Obi local Government Area, Hajiya Saadatu Yahaya said, “so far in our area, election is going on free of rancour and everybody was peaceful without problem,” she noted.

The Commissioner further informed that “As I speak to you I have not had any case of violent in the areas of Obi, Agwatashi and Dadere all in Obi Local Government. It is my responsibility to go round to ensure that election was free fair and peaceful,” she added.

Also interviewed was the Chairman, Lafia Local Government Area, Aminu Muazu Maifata, he said, election was peaceful as electorates queued to vote the candidate of their choice except some small challenges which were being addressed.

Election result: PDP statement provocative, Short News insult to democracy - APC Gov Ambode delivers Epe LG to Buhari, APC NASS Tom Okpe, Abuja

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has accused the major opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) of provocative statement which is said to be an affront to democracy.

The ruling party said the PDP statement dated 24 February is not only offensive but an unwarranted strike against democracy and the people of Nigeria.

The PDP in its statement on Sunday calls on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to arbitrarily name its candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar the winner of the presidential election which the APC describes as ‘reckless’.

The APC in a press statement on Sunday signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Makam Lanre Issah Onily said: “This call is shameful and alarming. Unwilling to wait for INEC the constituted legal authority to complete its task, the PDP seeks a short cut by false and premature claims of victory.

This cannot stand.

“Our nation is trying to perfect its democracy and not to turn it into a mockery.

Sadly, this objective is lost to the PDP. The PDP’s guiding principle is distilled to the following; because they want something, they should get it. What they use to guide themselves actually blinds them instead.

“Because they want the presidency so badly that they have engaged in all manner of misconduct and spared little cost to achieve their aim, they now believe that they are entitled to claim victory notwithstanding

the vote and will of the people. But this is not the way of democracy. Democracy means the people choose for themselves not that the PDP chooses for them”.

The APC further said that may have been their ways in the past but unfortunately will not continue in the new political dispensation in the country anymore.

“That has been the way in the past when they engineered and kidnapped elections to achieve their desired end notwithstanding the true will of the people. Thankfully, those days are gone and gone forever.

“These elections are supposed to be democratic exercises not a platform for the PDP to impose their selfish designs on a hopeful nation. The PDP should honour and follow the sovereign will and sober dignity of the Nigerian people.

“The people patiently waited the additional week for Election Day to come.

The vast majority of people again exercised patience as they peacefully voted on Election Day. Unfortunately, isolated incidents of violence took place. We are deeply saddened by the violence and disruption that did occur. Nigerians died yesterday and that should never have happened and should never happen again during an election of any kind in our land. Their deaths are needless tragedies that mar what was otherwise a celebration of our maturing democracy.

“Instead of the discordant and provocative statement it released, the PDP should be appealing for peace and for INEC to diligently and thoroughly perform the vital task assigned it. Curiously, the majority

of violent incidents and reports of electoral malpractice emanate from states which the PDP controls. It appears the PDP just cannot break from their old ways.

“The PDP press statement is, but a continuation of the sordid games that party has mastered. While all evidence points to the misconduct of their people, they make outlandish and false claims against the APC. This is but the typical modus operandi of a master swindler. They seek to distract the public eye from their own wrongs, by falsely accusing the APC of the very things they had conspired to set in motion months before this election even took place. From trying to falsify results on the ground to attempts at hacking the INEC software, they are willing to say and do anything to obtain victory, no matter how tainted by the wrongs they commit.

“For our part, the APC has governed and campaigned as we believed was right.

Because of this, we are content to await the verdict of the people. We also believe that only INEC has the authority to announce election results. What the PDP is trying to do, by claiming without any factual basis that Atiku has won, is usurp INEC’s constitutional authority. Moreover, PDP’s words are rash eruptions that may incite needless violence and unrest”.

The ruling party urge the PDP to live up to the status it claims for itself as a large political party saying, “The PDP should behave more responsibly instead of acting the role of spoiled children who threaten to upset the dinner table if not fed their preferred meal.

In the final results collated and announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), on Sunday the APC polled 17,710 votes across the 19 wards in the local government, while the PDP got 13,305 votes.

The breakdown shows that the APC showed its strength, winning in 17 of the 19 wards in Epe local government.

Ambode successful won his Polling Unit 033, Ogunmodede College in Ajaganabe Area, Ward A5, Epe, where APC polled 131 votes as against PDP who got 116 votes in the presidential election.

It was also victory songs for the APC in the Senate and House of Representatives elections, as the APC candidate for the House of Representatives, Hon Wale Raji will be returning to the Green Chambers, as he polled a total of 18,326 votes to beat the PDP candidate, Oye Ayantuga, who got a total of 13,250 votes.

The result also showed that the APC Senatorial candidate, Bayo Oshinowo scored 18,728 votes to defeat the PDP candidate, Abiodun Oyefusi who polled 13,134 votes.

Challenges experienced during polls, avoidable - Human Right Activist

Human Rights and Conflict Resolution Centre (HRCRC), a Non Governmental Organisation says that challenges experienced during the Presidential and National Assembly election was avoidable.

The center Acting Director, Mr George Etamesor expressed disappointment that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) did not meet expectations of Nigerians in spite of postponements and assurances.

Etamesor, who is also an election observer, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abakaliki on Sunday that he was unhappy with the late arrival of materials and malfunctioned card readers.

“It is a disappointment that in spite of all assurances, plans, time, arrangements with the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) and the Registration Area Centers (RACs) which was a backup plan for materials getting to centers, materials came late.

“Ebonyi as a case study is not such a big place where distances are long.

“With the time they spent, plans, resources and assurances given to us, I see no reason or excuses that they will register for this late arrival of materials.

“Even the smart card readers malfunctioning, well, technical may be the reason.

“The hitches that INEC had were very avoidable mistake,” Etamesor said.

APC wins all National Assembly seats in Abia North Sunday Nwakanma, Umuahia Abia North has collapsed into the waiting hands of the All Progressives Congress (APC) from domination by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Senator Mao Ohuabunwa, Hon Uko Nkole, have lost out, while Udeachara, Chima Anyaso, others, all of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) also failed to win.

However, former Governor, Orji Uzor Kalu, business mogul, Ben Kalu, Hon Nkeiru Onyejeocha, Nnnamdi Iro Orji (Opotoyom), all of APC swept the National Assembly polls.

Chief Orji-Uzor Kalu also delivered the Bende Local Government for President Mahamadu Buhari in the Saturday Presidential and National Assembly elections in the area.

Buhari polled a total of 9233 votes to defeat the candidate of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar who polled 6649 votes.

The Returning Officer for the presidential election in the area, Prof Nnennaya Ibiam of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike (MOUAU) announced the result at the INEC headquarters in Umuahia, Sunday.

Other results from Abia North indicated that the sitting member representing Isikwuuato/ Umunneochi Federal Constituency in the House of

Representatives in Abia state, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, who recently decamped from the PDP won the election into the House of Representatives to retain her seat for the fourth tenure.

She was declared winner after polling 14,712 votes to defeat her closest rival of the PDP, Mr. Ude Achara who polled 10,064 votes.

In Bende Federal Constituency, Benjamin Kalu of the All Progressive Congress (APC) also polled 9,138 votes to defeat Chima Anyaso of the PDp who polled 5591 votes in the Bende Federal Constituency.

The Returning Officer for the constituency, Mr. Martin Okoro declared him winner after announcing the result.

Other results are being awaited.

The Coordinator, Coalition of Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs), Dr Odiga Odiga, says that the group had started introducing viable options of livelihood to Cross River communities to ensure forest preservation.

Odiga made the disclosure in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Lagos.

According to him, the alternatives are means of empowering the communities that are dependent on forest resources in the area for their livelihood.

“Most communities in Cross River make a living from the forest.

“To get them to help in preserving the forest, alternative means of livelihood have to be provided for them.

“The environmental NGOs working in the areas have to put heads together to find a way of getting the communities to help in preserving the forest.

“In collaboration with the communities, we have to look for the alternatives in honey and beekeeping, mushroom farming and fuel efficient stoves,’’ he said.

Odiga said that the Cross River forest were rich in varieties of plants that produce high quality honey in the country.

He said the NGOs were assisting and encouraging the communities in bee farming in terms of training, logistics and finance.

South African President appoints graft tribunal

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has appointed a tribunal to fasttrack legal proceedings from graft investigations conducted by the country’s Special Investigating Unit (SIU), the presidency said on Sunday.

“The tribunal will adjudicate over any civil proceedings brought before it by the SIU, which investigates malpractice in state institutions, state assets and public money,’’ the presidency said in a statement.

Ramaphosa has vowed to root out corruption, which is perceived as a weakness for the ruling African National Congress (ANC) and his presidency ahead of elections this year.

Former President Jacob Zuma was removed from office in 2018 after years of graft probes.

Report says he denies any wrongdoing.

“Fast-tracking these matters through the Special Tribunal will enable the SIU to recover monies and assets lost by state institutions through irregular and corrupt means,” the presidency said.

It, however, added that this would ensure that guilty parties were held accountable.

Ramaphosa has appointed Judge Gidfonia Mlindelwa Makhanya as the tribunal’s president for a three-year term.

Among the SIU’s ongoing investigations, it is examining allegations of maladministration at state-run power utility, Eskom and logistics group, Transnet.

Investments in equities market down

by N74bn in one week Temitope Adebayo Investors in the equities market recorded profit-taking that led to market value dropping by N74 billion in five days.

The equities market trended down all through the week save for the second and third trading sessions with an appreciation of 0.67 per cent and 0.64 per cent respectively.

The NSE All-Share Index (ASI) sheds 0.61 per cent or 199.68 basis points to close at 32,515.52 basis points from 32,715.20 basis points it opened for trading last week.

Consequently, market capitalisation dropped by 0.61 per cent from N12.200 trillion the equities market opened for trading to close on Friday at N12.126 trillion.

Sectoral breakdown showed that all other indices finished lower with the exception of the NSE ASem, NSE Banking, NSE Insurance NSEAFR Bank Value and NSE Oil/Gas indices which rose by 0.96 per cent, 0.68 per cent, 0.02 per cent, 0.95 per cent, and 0.13 per cent respectively.

Also, value experienced 37.28 per cent decline in lower trades as 1.481 billion shares worth N17.647 billion in value were traded in 20,449 deals in the week under review as compared to 2.83 billion shares worth N28.138 billion in 28,739 deals in a prior week.

According to NSE weekly report, “The Financial Services Industry (measured by volume) led the activity chart with 1.038 billion shares valued at N10.170 billion traded in 12,232 deals; thus contributing 70.07 per cent and 57.63 per cent to the total equity turnover volume and value respectively.

“The Conglomerates Industry followed with 193.204 million shares worth N306.521 million in 1,330 deals. The third place was the Consumer Goods Industry with a turnover of 72.042 million shares worth N4.381 billion in 2,990 deals.

“Trading in the Top Three Equities namely, Transnational Corporation of Nigeria Plc, Sterling Bank Plc and Access Bank Plc (measured by volume) accounted for 421.500 million shares worth N1.274 billion in 2,979 deals, contributing 28.46 per cent and 7.22 per cent to the total equity turnover volume and value respectively.

ABCON cautions Nigerians over fake $100 notes in circulation Motolani Oseni The Association of Bureaux De Change Operators of Nigeria (ABCON) has alerted the public over ongoing security investigation on $100 bills being imported from India into Nigeria.

The ABCON President, Alhaji (Dr) Aminu Gwadabe, who disclosed the development to financial journalists after the group’s National Executive Council (NEC) Meeting in Lagos, said the $100 bill is majorly counterfeited because of huge profit margins that come with it.

He said some of the fraudsters’ objectives are not only to make a profit but to undermine Nigeria chances for automatic membership of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) after assessment of the country’s financial system scheduled for the first quarter of this year.

The ABCON boss said the issue

of fake dollar in circulation has been observed and reported at the relevant security agencies adding that the ABCON, has in the interest of the economy and Bureaux De Change (BDCs) businesses, secured Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) backing to begin nationwide campaign against fake currencies in the country.

He said rising cases of fake currencies in circulation has led to huge losses to BDC operators and the economy.

Gwadabe said that ABCON is educating the public on how to identify fake dollar bills in order to protect the image of the country in the eyes of foreign investors.

“It is part of our objectives which in enshrined on our constitution as an association to eliminate the incidences of fake currencies circulation thereby enhancing the image of the country and transparency in our operations,” he said.

Gwadabe said the ABCON NEC has therefore released a guide to all BDCs on how to detect a fake dollar bill. He disclosed that there are seven dollar bills of $1, $2, $5, $10, $20, $50 and $100 and seven steps to authenticate them.

“The weight of each bill is one gram, 2.61 inches wide and 6.14 inches length.

It is 75 per cent cotton and 25 per cent linen. Your finger can feel thickness and texture. Besides, the portrait watermark is partly overlapped by the Treasury seal, while the $100 bill is printed on the right side of the bill. The strip is thin, faint and runs vertically from top to bottom to the left of the watermark portrait. Also, the 3D security ribbon, also called the thread, is bright blue and vertical on the bill,” he said.

Continuing, Gwadabe explained that the raised printing feels rough on the right shoulder of Benjamin Franklin portrait while the colour shifting ink works under ultraviolet light.

He added that the dollar bill undergoes microprinting, which is the

production of recognizable patterns or characters in the bill at a scale that requires magnification to read with the naked eye. To the unaided eye, the text may appear as a solid line.

He said that currency commonly exhibits the highest quality (smallest size) of microprint because it demands the highest level of counterfeiting deterrence.

Gwadabe said the BDCs have over the years, remained a potent monetary policy tool for exchange rate stability and promoting transparent foreign exchange operations in the country.

“The BDCs have helped the government in creating over 30,000 jobs, thereby reducing the unemployment rate in Nigeria. The BDCs have continued to make foreign exchange available to the critical retail end-users thereby deepening forex access in the country. This campaign against the fake dollar is aimed at ensuring that forex users get value for their money,” he said.

Election 2019: Flight operations resume at airports Chukwuemeke Iwelunmo Flight operations Sunday picked up at the Murtala Muhammed Airport MMA Ikeja as passengers besieged terminals to catch their flights back to their various destinations after the first round of the country’s general elections.

Last Friday, the airport was a beehive of activities as it was declared public holiday by the federal government to enable voters to travel to the places of registration to cast their votes.

In a build-up to the election, airline operators adjusted their flights’ schedule in order to meet the restriction of movement during the election period but yesterday

almost all local airlines have returned to their normal flight schedule Mr Christian Iwara , the image maker of Air Peace told Daily Times that the airline has commenced normal operations after the election.

According to Iwara, the was no cause for alarm as everything was working according to the airline’s plan and passengers attended to.

Meanwhile, passengers were last Saturday stranded at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, following restriction of movement during the ongoing 2019 Presidential and National Assembly elections.

Some of the passengers who arrived the Airport from countries like the United Arab

Emirates, the United States of America (US), the United Kingdom and South Africa, among others, could not immediately find means of transportation to their final destinations.

Those travelling outside the country with morning flights came to the airport as early as 5:00 pm to beat the restriction order.

Some of the inbound passengers advised the government to extend the restriction order to enable arriving passengers from outside the country to exercise their civic responsibility.

According to them, the development would disenfranchise eligible voters who intended to arrive early into the country on Saturday to exercise their civic right.

“We are developing as a nation and if

we intend to build our political will, we must endeavour to put in place a workable system.

“The PVC should be clearance for movement and when such priority is placed on the PVC, it would enable many Nigerians to even go and collect theirs.

Mr Issa Shittu, who just arrived from the UAE, said he knew there was an election but felt that the country should not be shut down.

“I know there is an election but in developed countries, people cast their votes but people are allowed to go about their daily chores. In fact, with the use of electronic voting, we can cast our votes and still be able to go about our usual activities”,he said.

Why CBN Forex interventions may drop in 2019 - Analysts Motolani Oseni Despite a whopping $1.5 billion total foreign exchange interventions by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) in less than two months of 2019, analysts at ARM Research have predicted a likely drop of foreign exchange injections this year compared to massive forex mediations recorded in 2018.

This is even as the apex bank on Friday, February 22, 2019, made an intervention of $268.4million in the retail Secondary Market Intervention Sales (SMIS) and CNY 46.3million in the spot and short tenored forwards segment of the inter-bank foreign market.

The Lagos based company in its report entitled, “January 2018 Economic Update – resurgence in FPI flows softens CBN intervention sales,” stated that after the surge in capital outflows from the economy recorded towards the end of last year: “ The Investors and Exporters Window (IEW) witnessed a rebound

in activities in the month of January with inflows (ex-CBN) rising to $2.6 billion (+79.8per cent MoM), to account for 95per cent (vs. 58.4per cent in December) of outflows (+10.3per cent MoM to $2.8 billion).

“As a result, unmet demand at the window declined from $1.0 billion in December to $131 million in January. Reflecting the rebound inflows during the month, the apex bank intervention sales at the IEW declined 62.5per cent to $453 million (vs. $1.2 billion in December),” the analysts added.

They noted that “Over the rest of 2019, we maintain our view that CBN intervention will come in relatively lower than the prior year with our estimate suggesting total outflow of $50.2 billion during the year, which is lower than $54.5 billion in FY 2018.

“On inflows, having modelled crude oil production and price of 2.07mbpd and $55.95/ bbl. for 2019 respectively, we forecast average monthly crude oil inflow to the CBN of $1.15 billion over 2019 with overall oil inflow for the year estimated at $13.83 billion (-10.2per cent

YoY). For non-oil inflow, while we note the relative stability post-election in Q1 2019, we estimate total FPI flows over 2019 to decline 35.4percent YoY to $7.6 billion.”

The apex bank had pumped a total of $1.18billion into the interbank foreign exchange market during the period and also sold $300million to about 4,000 BDCs ($75,000 per BDC).

Until last December when the CBN introduced a special forex sale of $15,000 per BDC every Thursday due to what it said was increased forex demand during the Christmas and New Year festivities, each BDC was entitled to purchase $20,000 from the regulator on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. This means that with the new special Thursday sale each BDC has been buying a total of $75,000 per week from the CBN since December 2018.

Interestingly, in its 2019 economic outlook, Coronation Research had predicted that the CBN would pump $6billion into the forex market this year.

Speaking on the report, Head of Coronation

Research, Guy Czatoryski, said, “We forecast an average $58.00/bbl for 2019. An average much below this means the CBN will have to keep rates very high and could even challenge the Naira / US dollar exchange argument. An average much about $60.00/bbl means the CBN will have confidence its reserve position and will be able to cut rates later in the year, in Q4, less likely Q3.

Meanwhile, the Director, Corporate Communications Department, CBN, Isaac Okorafor, has revealed that the apex bank fresh intervention was for requests in the agricultural and raw materials sectors. The Chinese Yuan, on the other hand, was for Renminbi-denominated Letters of Credit.

Mr Okorafor further expressed satisfaction over the stability in the foreign exchange market which according to him, was largely due to sustained intervention by the Bank. He assured that the Bank would remain committed to ensuring that all the sectors of the forex market continue to enjoy access to the needed foreign exchange.

Maritime Union kicks over Chevron nondisclosure of employee list Temitope Adebayo The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has issued oil giant; Chevron Nigeria Limited 21 days ultimatum over what the union described as failure to agree with the union’s unionization.

MWUN in a letter written to Chevron and addressed to its Managing Director pointed at the oil giant’s persistent refusal to submit the list of all its contractors for the purpose of enlisting their

employees as members of the union.

The letter which was signed by the SecretaryGeneral of the MWUN, and obtained by our correspondent stated that efforts to get workers in Chevron into the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria have been frustrated by the oil company.

Recalling that the union has been on the fight to unionise Chevron for a long time, the letter noted that: “Reference is made to a tripartite meeting held on Thursday 24th November, 2016 between the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Maritime Workers Union of

Nigeria (MWUN) and your management at the NIMASA Zonal office , Warri Delta state where your management was mandated to submit to Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency and the union the comprehensive list of all maritime companies providing you with marine services for the purpose of unionisation of their employees”.

MWUN, in the letter, expressed frustration and disappointment at the refusal of Chevron to comply with the directive, even though it was given almost three years ago. It accused the oil company

of “shielding your vendors’ employees from being unionized”.

The union, further lamented that it patience has been exhausted and could no longer cope with the oil giant’s posture.

“We are therefore constrained to issue a 21-day ultimatum effective Wednesday 20th February, 2019 within which it is expected to receive the list”.

“Government is also subsidising the examination fees for students of secondary schools and entrance examination fees into the Tertiary Institutions in the country.

“The Government Enterprise and Empowerment Programme loan scheme otherwise known as ‘Trader Moni’ created to provide interest-free loans with six-months repayment period for petty traders and artisans in the society has grown tremendously from initial N1O,000 to N100,000.

“As at August 2018, the sum of $10,722,222 had been disbursed to cumulatively, 386,000 beneficiaries from all the 36 states in the country including the Federal Capital Territory”.

According to him, the government’s Conditional Cash Transfer Scheme, whereby government disbursed N5,000 monthly stipend to the poor and vulnerable households in the society has continued to empower the poorest of the poor in the society and salvage them from the yoke of poverty.

He said: “We started out with improving the primary healthcare centres; that is the first level in the healthcare project. ``We started the primary healthcare development agency since 2014, as of 2018 we have fully implemented the primary healthcare under one roof and it is fully functional. ``States that have functional Primary

Healthcare Development Agency (PHCDA) are entitled to 500,000 dollars (Five hundred thousand US dollar) through `Saving One Million Lives Programme’ for Results (SOMLP for R) under Federal Ministry of Health. ``And Anambra State is now qualified to receive the 500,000 dollars.

He added: “”The Secondary Healthcare level under Obiano administration has a target of upgrading three General Hospitals in three senatorial zones across the state to Specialist Hospitals. ``The Enugwu-Ukwu General Hospital is at 40 per cent completion, Onitsha General Hospital now at 90 per cent completion and Ekwulobia General Hospital at 75 per cent completion.’’

The health commissioner stressed that Gov. Obiano had continued with the projects started in the first tenure. ``We inherited almost dilapidated general hospitals, for instance, we have continued renovations of community general hospitals. ``The Anaku General Hospital, Nawgu General Hospital and Mbaukwu General Hospital have been fully renovated and inaugurated,’’ Akabuike emphasised.

He said that at the tertiary level, the state has two Teaching hospitals; one is

Nnamdi Azikiwe Teaching Hospital, Nnewi and the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital (COOUTH), Awka”.

Akabuike noted that the current administration had secured the fourth, the fifth Nigerian Dental and Medical Council accreditation (NDMC) and then graduated the first set of medical students. ``This year we have graduated the fourth set of the medical students from the hospital. You know before now that the first set of students waited for 10 years to graduate. ``The institution has gone beyond training under graduate doctors; this time around we have got accreditation for training doctors will go ahead to qualify as specialists,’’ he added.

Akabuike said that Government had approved the purchase of 64 Slice CT scan equipment, the highest level in the country.

He also said that government has been able to install diagnostic equipment that would make COOUTH to be world class teaching hospital. ``From 2018 to date, this government has done what we call `Health Reforms with the Health Insurance Scheme’ -the Anambra State Health Insurance Agency (ASHA).

A youth group under the aegis of Adazi-Ani Development Advocate has trooped out on the street of Adazi-Ani, in Anaocha Local Government Area of Anambra State, to sensitise the electorate on the need to vote credible candidates as well as shun all manner of inducements from desperate politicians.

The group numbering over 500 wielding placards of various inscriptions ranging from “No to Vote buying and Selling, “Our Votes Must Surely Count”, We Will Vote According to Conscience”, “Our Vote Is Not For Sale”, We Will Vote Massively for Credible Candidates”, We Are Coming Out to Vote”, among others.

The demonstrators marched through Adazi-Ani Community High School to Ama-Ukuku Junction to Orjiakor Memorial Grammar School with a brief stopover at Rise Clinic from Rise Clinic all in Adazi-Ani. Speaking on behalf of the youths, the organiser of the youth Rally, Mr. Okoye Augustine Amakom, said they were out to conscientise the people of the area, especially youths on the danger inherent in vote buying and selling even as he announced that the group was apolitical, adding that they were out to ensure that Adazi-Ani youths cast their votes for credible and deserved candidates.

Amakom, who urged the youths to vote according to their conscience, thanked the organisers of the event for their magnanimity and encouragement, even as he promised to take the message of vote buying and selling to nooks and crannies of Adazi-Ani community.

On his part, a participant and a youth of Adazi-Ani, Mr. Emeka Okeke, appealed to youths of the community to desist from acts capable of bringing the town to disrepute. He enjoined them to come en masse to cast their vote, saying that he was ready to contribute his quota in ensuring that right and sellable candidates were voted into position of authority.

Okeke, who frowned at the way and manner political office seekers move about their campaigns, urged Anambra youths, especially Adazi-Ani youths to look beyond monetary gains and inducement, adding that voting right and prepared individuals would ameliorate the plights of the poor masses and set Nigeria on the path of progress.

Continuing, Mr. Okeke, a medical Doctor, used the medium to make a case for the physically challenged persons in the community, noting that they (Physically challenged persons) deserved to be given equal opportunity and attention.

Anambra street traders frown over multiple levies Traders under the aegis of Anambra Street Traders Welfare Association of Nigeria (ASTWAN), have threatened to take legal action on the state government if she continues to play blind to the multiple levies imposed on the traders in the state.

According to the union, the traders under the present administration of Chief Willie Obiano have experienced unprecedented hardship and illegal extortion of varying degrees from both legal and illegal agencies, who claimed to represent the state government.

The association gave this warning during interactive session with some select stakeholders in the state, at Awka, the state capital.

It would be recalled that hundreds of the association members had on November 29, 2018, stormed Government House, Awka to register their displeasure over multiple and crippling levies allegedly imposed on street trad¬ers in the state.

The traders lamented the alleged levies and appealed for the immediate intervention of the state governor, Chief Willie Obiano.

Our corespondent also reports that the state governor, through the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Solo Chukwulobelu, had assured the traders that the state would publish authorised, legitimate levies to be paid, saying that all illegitimate levies would stop and perpetrators fished out.

However, that plea fell on deaf ears, as the traders are yet to see any fulfillment of the promised action by the state government.

Speaking during the meeting, the chairman of ASTWAN, Hon. Anthony Ebogha, disclosed that the earlier protest scared some illegal tax collectors, assuring that the union would not rest on their oars until all unnecessary levies are stopped.

The Chairman said that the rate of extortion of the traders had reached a worrisome state, reiterating the union’s resolve to pay only Anambra State Waste Management Agency levy (ASWAMA); Business premise levy and liquor license.

Other levies considered as illegal by the union include Business permit, shop and kiosk levy, and signage levy.

Regretting that many of the business owners took loans with exorbitant rates from financial institutions and are finding it difficult to survive under the harsh economic climate currently bedeviling the country, Ebogho appealed that the state government should provide loans and enabling environment for businesses to thrive.

He further requested that the union leaders act as a middlemen between the tax collectors and its members for a itchfree operation, while charging the state government to fulfill its promises to the union during the last protest.

Other union members, who spoke in separate interviews, re-echoed on the need for government to eliminate all forms of extortion and intimidation of traders in the state, calling for more protection of the traders.

Earlier, Director of Small and Medium Enterprise, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Anambra State, Conrade Okwudili Obiefuna, said that their complaints were well noted, and assured them of a swift response.

He encouraged the trades to key into the N10 million loan initiative currently ongoing in the state, while expressing optimism that anyone who met the criteria would access the loan.

While stressing that no business can be very successful without making use of loans to assist it, the director regretted that most people have not accessed such loan opportunity in the South East as against the western and northern counterparts.

Lagos stakeholders commend INEC for well coordinated election Stories by Patrick Okohue Some Nigerian political stakeholders have commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for its performance at the Presidential and national Assembly election, describing it as above board and well coordinated.

Speaking on the election, the National Legal Adviser of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Hon. Babatunde Ogala described the election as satisfactory, according to him, “I have tried to go around the constituency to the extent to which I could move, I will say that so far it appears to be moving so well.

“Like if you move around now you can see the people, the enthusiasm, they are relaxed, there are even no policemen here and the people are policing the votes themselves and you can see everybody are seated waiting, organising the queue and the process themselves, this is a case of citizens taking ownership of the process.

“If what I have seen in this constituency is anything to go by, then we can say that there is a lot of interest, a lot of enthusiasm, if you listen to the discussions even you hear people throwing challenge and all that, so I will say so far so good.”

Talking about the relaxed security situation in most parts of the state, Ogala said, “I think what I can attribute this to is the President, Commander In Chief’s statement,

which some chose to misconstrue, which was a stern warning, ‘go and disrupt the process at the risk of your life’, it was as a statement to all.

“The Military are deployed, but they are not at polling stations, they are not at polling units, they are not even being seen, but they are deployed and they can move at little or no notice, that is the beauty of this as against being laidback, they are on standby, they are on alert,” he said.

Also speaking, Mr. Emmanuel Umohinyang, Convener of the ReElect Buhari Movement described the election as generally peaceful.

He said, “From what we have seen in this polling unit, it is relatively peaceful and we will also use this opportunity to commend Mr. President for keeping to his word that under his watch elections will not be rigged, it will be peaceful, it will be fair and it will be credible.

“What we have also received in our situation room also suggest that even from other parts of the country, it’s been very peaceful, so I believe that the pain we had about the aborted election of the 16th February, that people will console themselves with this peaceful atmosphere that we have experienced and Nigerians have taken over this process and make it theirs.

“This is because a time of election is a time of celebration of democracy, that is what we are seeing there, people have come out peacefully to cast their votes for candidates of their choice and we must also praise the people for being orderly.

Why I joined APC last minutes to election, by former PDP Presidential aspirant One of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential aspirants, Mr Osifo Stanley has counselled Nigerians to avoid violence, as they come out en-masse to vote their choice in during the elections.

Osifo made this call at a press conference in Lagos, when he officially declared his defection from the PDP to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

He claimed that his movement from the PDP to the APC besides being predicated on the fact that the APC led administration has done exceptionally well, in the delivery of the dividend of democracy to hapless Nigerian masses, that the fact that the leadership of his former party, the PDP refused to address some concerns about him and his supporters, also further fuelled his decision.

Osifo said that he had to defect to APC having toed all paths of

resolution in PDP and no respite in sight.

“I am officially announcing my movement from PDP to APC, myself and my supporters are giving the incumbent President and other candidates of the party support to do more good works.

ADC alleges election malpractices in Ogun, fingers APC, APM Benjamin Omoike, Lagos The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has raised the alarm that Saturday’s Presidential and National Assembly election was marred by several electoral malpractices across Ogun State, especially in Ogun Central Senatorial District, in favour of the incumbent Governor of the state, Senator Ibikunle Amosun.

In a statement by the state Secretary of the party, Bashorun Niyi Salako, the ADC alleged that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and Allied Peoples’ Movement (APM), concluded plans to hijack some ballot boxes of the Senatorial election.

The party said that there were plans by the state government to use the leadership of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), in the state to divert some of the commercial buses hired by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), to an undisclosed location, while on their way to their collation centres after the election.

Meanwhile, some ballot papers meant for the Senatorial election were allegedly reported missing by some Electoral Officers across wards in Yewa North/Imeko Afon Federal Constituency, Yewa South LGA and Obafemi Owode LGA, among others.

Some state executives and House of Assembly candidates of the APC and APM were seen moving

from one LGA to another, holding meetings with their parties’ agents and allegedly sharing money to electorates.

Also, a total of 11,553 ballot papers of the Senate and House of Representatives were reported missing overnight at Ajilete ward, Yewa South LGA and Yewa North/ Imeko-Afon Federal constituency as at 10am on Saturday.

Contrary to the claim of the EOs in charge of the wards that all sensitive materials were intact, ADC’s party agent and a few others confirmed that the materials had been tampered with.

A party agent in Ajilete ward said, “We (party agents) all confirmed yesterday that the materials were complete, but were shocked to find today that 5,500 are missing. The EO could not defend himself after I queried him, but rather wanted to collect about 3,000 ballot papers from a nearby poling unit, which we frowned at. He promised that 5,500 votes will be discounted from the total votes of the poling unit.”

He continued: “While some hoodlums disrupted the electoral processes in Kenta Idi-aba area in Abeokuta, some APM leaders and House of Assembly candidates were seen sharing money around Ward 10, Oke-Ola and Ward 9, Old Cooperative Bank building, Townhall, Remo North LGA, Ogun East Senatorial District and Magboro poling unit, Obafemi Owode LGA, Ogun Central senatorial district.

“There are also lapses on the part of INEC as the electoral process did not start in Sokori area in Abeokuta, Edu polling unit, Ketu Adie Owo, Ado Ota LGA till 1pm due to the absence of electoral materials like ballot papers and stamp pads among others.”

The state secretary also added that some members of the state’s NURTW had alerted the party on the plan of the ruling party, APC, to use some hoodlums to intimidate and harass the electorate and supporters of ADC’s Ogun Central Senatorial candidate, Rt. Hon. Titi Oseni-Gomez.

He said, “We can confirm that some youths, who are meant to dress like members of the National Youth Service Corps, have been paid and will be deployed to certain polling units to work with some INEC officials to ask the electorate to vote APC and alter electoral figures.”

The ADC further alerted that it had obtained feelers that military and police guards would be assigned to top leaders of the ruling APC and APM on election day, a step which it said could greatly compromise the elections, “through well-known acts of public intimidation, clamp-down on the opposition, and other forms of political brigandage.

“We will also implore INEC to enforce the ban on the use of camera phones at voting centres, and then make sure that voters perform their civic duties without let or hindrance.”

Kei Nishikori: Naomi Osaka will learn to deal with fame

Kei Nishikori is confident his Japanese compatriot Naomi Osaka will learn to cope with pressure as she deals deal with her new elite status in tennis.

Great Ogboru

A true, courageous leader Edafe Obaroighoror Since the return of democratic governance in 1999, so much has transpired in Nigeria’s political environment. Different actors have emerged. While some subsists, others have either been retired or simply disappeared from the elastic political space.

But in this democratic rule, one name that has featured prominently and consistently in the Delta State political lexicon is that of the man popularly called ‘The Peoples General’ by his political followers and even a great many of his opponents for his principled stance against bad governance.

Chief Great Ovedje Ogboru is a business and political leadership icon to many. He was born on April 10th, 1958 in Port Harcourt to the famous Ogboru Dynasty of Abraka of Urhobo and Okolocha family of Umukuata in Anioma, both in Delta State.

Ogboru’s personality, political philosophy and governance agenda resonate with Deltans for good and obvious reasons. He is a visionary with immense capacity to create wealth and do things right. Principled and incorruptible, many rightly see in Ogboru the much-needed answer to Delta’s unpardonable governance decadence. Very kind at heart and soft in appearance.

Ogboru is nonetheless generally known to be very tough against lawlessness and whatever that is corrupt. Also, his unique perspective to the purpose of wealth endears the people to him.

As the Governorship Candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, for the 2019 general elections in Delta State, Ogboru is running on the mantra of Delta Liberation 2019.

His manifesto says his “vision is to transform Delta to a foremost global destination of prosperity on the African continent.

According to him, “Our mission is to restore and honour our cherished traditional values of justice and equity, integrity and hard work; responsibly address the plagues of corruption, mediocrity, and ethnic discrimination and their destructive consequences; renew and increase

our economic strengths; empower our people to live their lives well; and massively develop and modernize our public infrastructures and State in general. We will not tolerate crimes in our society. Our focus is on massive job creation for our people through fast-paced industrialization; attraction of big businesses and smart investments in new technologies and

IT; unlocking huge opportunities in our maritime and tourism sectors; and agriculture. In terms of motivation, benefits and service delivery, our civil service will be No. 1 in this country. We shall make huge investments to modernize our healthcare, educational, and transport systems; and create new cities and towns and bring back

Objective observers believe he is the most popular politician in today’s Delta State. This was demonstrated recently when APC took its presidential campaign to the state. Warri City Stadium, venue of the campaign event, was filled beyond its capacity. Those outside far outnumbered those who could gain access into the stadium. Ogboru, his ‘People’s General’ was in full control. His political clout was manifestly on display to the admiration of President Muhammadu Buhari and other national leaders of the APC. Ogboru had his elementary education at Municipal Primary School, Port Harcourt, Christian Missionaries Society (CMS) Primary School, Abraka and Local Authority (LA) (now Oharisi) Primary School, Ughelli from 1966 to 1971. Thereafter, he attended Huron University of South Dakota, London Campus where he obtained a Master of Business Administration degree. He went on to study for and obtained a master’s degree in International Relations at the University of Kent in Canterbury. His research work at Kent on the effects of IMF’s Structural Adjustment Programme (SAP) on the economies of Ghana and Nigeria still stands out there.

He was admitted into the prestigious Government College, Ughelli (GCU) in 1971 and finished in 1975. Immediately thereafter, he worked for four years as a primary school teacher at Owodoawanre Primary School, Ughelli. Within this period, he obtained his Advanced Levels result.

In 1980, young Great was faced with serious challenges of life. Fourth in a family of 16 children, Great appreciated the full financial burden on his low-income civil servant father. He chose therefore to momentarily sacrifice higher education in the hope that that decision would in the future be a positive turning point in the destiny of his family.

Consequently, in January 1978, he left home, clutching a bag that contained only four shirts and three trousers, and headed to Lagos in search of ‘greatness’ – a bold step of faith that would later transform so many lives beyond imagination. And so, his sojourn in Corporate Nigeria started as a Marketing Officer in Exchange Fisheries, a small Lagos fishing company.

Just aged 25, Ogboru left paid employment and started his own business in 1983. Banking on his rare sense of personal integrity and divine grace, he established Fiogret Limited, a frozen fish trading company. Fiogret grew rapidly into a global fishing conglomerate with fishing licenses around the world. Within three years, Ogboru established many successful subsidiaries of Fiogret in quick succession. He also got a banking licence from the Central Bank of Nigeria.

With these businesses, Ogboru’s name became registered in global corporate consciousness as arguably then Nigeria youngest and richest business mogul and billionaire. On August 10, 1989, he took the world stage by storm as the youngest and highest Nigerian donor to the Namibia Solidarity Fund (NSF) in the ancient city of Benin. A firm believer in humanity and its preservation, he stood with the people of Namibia in their struggle for freedom because for him, “Humanity is one.”

His philanthropic works are rooted in uncommon humility. Once asked about what he does for society with his wealth, he simply answered, “Ask the people. I am just favoured by grace to be an instrument in God’s hands.”

Great Ogboru is a member of the Nigeria Policy Group (NPG) – an august body that financed

He is a respected grassroots political leader in Delta where he is the nemesis of bad governance and misrule. Convinced about his ‘Equal Opportunities Development Initiative (EODI)’ – a well-articulated governance agenda to transform Delta State to a modern economy and society, he has remained passionately consistent about leading his people to turn the fortunes of Delta around. His patience and consistency on the Delta Project derives from Ogboru’s core as a leader.

He has a marathoner’s mindset to necessary change.

For him it requires courage, endurance, vision, and a constancy of purpose. He believes real change does not come on a platter of gold. For him, obstacles are enemies of change that must be successfully challenged.

Like the Asian Tigers, they must make deliberate haste to create a modern economy in Delta for our people. The more time they waste, the more harm they cause the people – whether Urhobo, Kwale, Ika, Aniocha, Ndo-Oshimili, Itsekiri, Isoko, or Ijaw.

On account of his clear vision, unmatched popularity, personal wealth, resourcefulness, grit and without ‘federal might’ in the hands of his opponents to rig and oppress millions of supporters and followers, many analysts believe that Great Ovedje Ogboru, the fish seller from Abraka, will win convincingly the governorship of Delta State to give his followers something to cheer for since they have been following him since 2000.

A Christian, Ogboru is married to Stella Ebi Ogboru, a virtuous Ijaw amazon. They have four children.

This survey will provide the additional data for planning which was not given in the main census.’’ …Nigeria’s Minister for Information, 1956 If you ask President Muhammadu Buhari the population of Nigeria, he may tell you “about 170million.” The next time the president is reading a speech, he may say that Nigeria’s population is about 180million. The same is applicable to the Minister of Finance, the Minister of Agriculture, the Minister for Information, everybody in government, both in the incumbent and previous administrations.

Since the campaigns for the 2019 general elections started and until Saturday when voting ended for the presidential and national assembly elections, no candidate of any party has said anything about Nigeria’s population.

Not president Buhari; not former vice president Atiku Abubakar, not vice president Yemi osinbajo, a professor of law, not Peter Obi, who prides himself as a successful businessman and economic planner. They cannot even dare to go there because none of them know the population of Nigeria, the country they are governing, in the case of Buhari and Osinbajo; or the want to govern with regards to Atiku and Peter Obi. The current Minister for national planning does not know the population of Nigeria, the same with ministers before him. If you don’t know the population of your country, how can you plan for the people? Proper planning is done require, as a matter of must, data. If you are planning for wedding, you need to know the number of guests expected. If you are planning a dinner, you need to know how many people are coming. The number is the data. Without data, you cannot plan or at best, you can only plan to fail. And there lies Nigeria’s dilemma.

On the 25th February, 1964, Daily Times reported that an official statement issued the previous day by the Ministry of Information said that, “The census board which consists of a member from each regional government has now completed the task of evaluating census figures. All figures as stated in a broadcast before the census have to undergo a number of exhaustive tests in order to ensure their accuracy and acceptance.

“These tests have the calculation and analysis of many thousand figures. The detailed calculations have been carried out by the representatives of regional governments.

This has taken time to complete and explains why the results were not available until just now. Without this thorough appraisal of the figures the government of the federation and the general public would have little or no confidence in any published figures.”

From that report, Nigeria had a population of 55,653,821. The breakdown indicated as follows: Northern Region: 29,777,986; Eastern Region: 12,388,646; Western Region: 10,278,500; MidWest 2,533,337; Logos 675,352 The Ministry of Information then said, “On the basis of these figures the Federal Government and the Regional Governments con now review their plans for economic and social development. But, besides these overall figures, more information is also required on the educational attainments and skills of our manpower, and on the number of persons, engaged in the various occupations and industries.

“It is also essential that information is

available for the estimation of the future rate of growth of the population. The Federal Government has therefore, is part of its census programme, decided to undertake a large scale sample survey later in the year. This survey will provide the additional data for planning which was not given in the main census.’’

That the meat of the matter. The last time Nigeria conducted credible census was in November 1991. It took place from 27th November to 2nd December. The Housing and Population Census conducted in 2006 was sham as the population of 140,003,542 that was posted as the nation’s population was rejected by many

ethnic groups in the country as not reflecting the true number of people in the country.

If Nigeria is a serious country with development as one of its national agenda, deliberate efforts would be made to know how many people occupy its geographical space. If not, just forget it.
