How playing pranks landed NYSC member in trouble Continued from page 1

trouble started last week Friday when Adeola, the corps member serving in the school, tried to play some pranks by writing the name of her colleague who was absent in the school staff attendance register. But Mr. Friday Udoaka, the principal detected Adeola’s pranks and descended on her by giving her strokes of cane that was in his hand meant to flog students who reported late at school that morning. The incident did not go well with Adeola’s colleagues. So by Saturday morning, all the corps members invaded the office of the state Director of NYSC, Mr. Amesseun, to protest the assault on their

colleague. By weekend, the picture of Adeola with her blood clotted hand had gone viral in the social media, causing tension in Akwa Ibom State considering the implication of the principal’s action. The following day, our correspondent visited the school for a fact finding only to discover that the embattled principal was not in office. When our correspondent further called the Head of Public Relations of NYSC in the state, he invited our correspondent to his office for clarification on the matter. Before our correspondent arrived at the NYSC office, the controversial principal, Commissioner of Education in Akwa

Ibom State, Prof. Victor Inoka and the state zonal Director of NYSC, were already seated with the corps member and her colleagues. To set the ball rolling, Mr. Friday Udoaka was on his feet begging. In an emotion ladden voice, Udoaka said: “Adeola please forgive me. I was at the heat of anger”. Udoaka, who has just three years to retire from civil service, further said: “I have never been rude to corps members before. Please forgive me”. At this juncture, Prof. Inoka brought out the sum of N50,000 and gave to Adeola and emphasised the need for Corps members in the state to the needful. He also advised all the parties to let sleeping dog lie.

Benue rape: There’s need to stop rape of minors, abuse of children – NAPTIP DG Doosuur Iwambe, Abuja

The Director General of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), Ms Julie Okah-Donli, has stated that there is the need to stop unpleasant raping of minors and abuse of helpless Nigerian children in the country. Okah-Donli stated this during a press conference on Friday in Abuja while reacting to the rape of a 13- year-old girl in Benue State, Elizabeth Ogbaje, a student of the Federal Government College, who was allegedly raped by one Andrew Ogbuja, a Lecturer of Benue State Polytechnic, Ugbokolo and his son, Victor Ogbuja. The victim after being severely abused by the suspects was afflicted with Vesico Vagina Fistula (VVF) and other health complications, died at the Benue State University Teaching Hospital, Makurdi last Sunday.

Okah-Donli disclosed that her agency was working vigorously to ensure Justice was done and perpetrators must be prosecuted accordingly. She explained that the lecturer and his son consistently and ruthlessly sexually molested the little Elizabeth. “On behalf of the management and staff of NAPTIP, I wish to express our heartfelt condolence to the family of late Elizabeth for the great loss. “My heart is heavy because another pride of the nation has been silenced and I am sad because another mother of the nation has been killed, in the name of Elizabeth Ogbaje. “I am appealing to stakeholders to join hands with NAPTIP in its renewed sensitisation and awareness to end sexual violence and rape in the country, the NAPTIP DG stated. Okah-Donli urged Governors’ Forum, an umbrella body of all Governors in the country, to domesticate the Violence Against

Persons Prohibition Act (VAPP) to address rising cases of sexual violence in various states of the federation. She said that it was disturbing to note that incidences of rape and sexual violence against minors and other vulnerable segments of the society was on the increase. According to her, effort must be made to address the ugly situation and necessary legal framework must be put in place. The NAPTIP boss urged children passing through similar situations to speak out and report to appropriate agency for prompt response. “Children who are victims of sexual violence and rape should defy any threat and open up, and I assure them that succour will surely come their way. “We must all break the culture of silence and free our children from the constant threat of sexual violence,” she added.

NIMC registers 33m Nigerians for National Identification Number Mathew Dadiya, Abuja

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has disclosed that it has captured over 33 million Nigerians in its data base as at October 2018. Mr. Loveday Ogbonna, Head of Corporate Communication (NIMC), disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), on Friday in Abuja, saying that the figure comprised of both adults and children. He, however, decried the low turnout of children in the National Identification Number (NIN) registration. According to him, the registration for NIN is a lifetime opportunity and having NIN as an individual will strengthen and aid service delivery.

Ogbonna further noted that obtaining NIN would promote socio-economic inclusion as well as development for hundreds of poor people in the country. He advised Nigerians and Legal Residents to take their children and wards of all ages for enrolment at any NIMC registration centre across the country. “Enrolment of minors is ongoing and has no age bracket, parents are encouraged to bring children that are one year and above so that the camera can capture their faces very well. “What we have observed is that it is difficult to take pictures of children below one year, so we advise parents to wait until their kids are one year old. “Parents and guardians must present their NIN and their children’s birth certificate before

their children or ward can be enrolled and issued a National Identification Number,’’ he said. He, therefore, advised that Nigerians should utilise the opportunity to get registered, adding that NIN has so many social benefits which include access to government services. “It also enables you to assert your identity; nobody mistakes you for another; no matter how identical you are, NIN singles you out,” Ogbonna added. Ogbonna added that for one to obtain a driver’s licence, he or she must present the NIN as a basic requirement, saying NIN is also a basic requirement for obtaining an International Passport. He cautioned that double enrolment into the National Identity Database (NIDB) for the NIN is a crime and a punishable offence.

have indicated interest but their names are yet to be made public but they have shown interest for Port Harcourt, Warri and Kaduna refineries “ But they showed the most interest for the Port Hacourt refinery. “Efforts are on, our team of engineers are abroad, seeking financing. What we want to do with refineries is to bring in financiers’ that will put in their money for rehabilitation instead of the NNPC. “By doing that, they will source their funds from what we produce,’’ he said. He reassured that with the ongoing commitment, the projected timeline of the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources Dr Ibe

Kachikwu for the refineries to be up and running by 2019 would be achieved, particularly with the coming on stream of the Dangote refinery. It will be recalled that Kachikwu said that the NNPC was expected to sign agreements with third-party financiers and contractors for the revamping of its 445,000 barrel per day (bpd) combined capacity refineries in Kaduna, Warri and Port Harcourt by October. Secretary to the State Government, Osarodion Ogie Esq., in a statement issued in Benin City, said the meeting will “discuss the Environmental Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) exercise and Resettlement Action Plan (RAP) in respect of the Benin City River Port (BRP) and Access Road Development Project.” Ogie noted that those expected at the meeting include the “Chairmen of Ovia North-East Local Government Area, Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area in Edo State, Warri North Local Government Area in Delta State and Pere Godwin Ogunoyibo of Olodiama Kingdom. Others according the SSG are “elders, leaders of interest groups and members of Gele Gele, Asabotie, Ureju, Ajoki, Ologbo, Bresibi, Young Town, Tisun, Obagnoro, Tebu, Ajaolunu, Oboghoro, Eke, Jalla, Ugheye and Ugbogbudu communities.” The state government urged all interested parties to attend the meeting that will hold at Imaguero College Conference Hall, on Tuesday October 30, 2018, by 10am. According to Obaseki, the investment

agreement with the Chinese partners includes the building of a port on the Benin River, dredging of the river which is a channel of about 40 kilometres, and the construction of a link road to the Benin bye-pass. The governor explained that “The Benin River when completed, will link the Lekki Deep Seaport, help decongest the ports in Lagos State, open up Edo State to the international market by serving as a platform for import and export trade. “The company we are working with is the largest investor in the Lekki Deep Seaport. The Benin River Port is going to be a sister port to the Lekki Deep Sea Port. We expect that up to 30 per cent cargo going to the Lekki Deep Seaport would be meant for Benin port.” He maintained that “The construction of the Benin River Port would also provide opportunities to export agricultural and manufactured products being produced in the state. “We are investing massively in agriculture particularly in areas like oil palm, rubber, cassava, fruits and all range of agricultural produce which need to be processed and exported outside the country.” “There are companies operating in the state and are seeking to export their products. 2019: PDP challenges Buhari over alleged fresh certificate saga The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has challenged President Muhammadu Buhari to show proof of his integrity by presenting his academic credentials to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). According to the PDP, the development will put to an end the controversy trailing his school certificate. The PDP also urged Buhari to fulfil his obligation like other presidential candidates, instead of availing INEC with affidavits. In a statement issued by its spokesman, Kola Ologbondiyan on Friday, the PDP said while its presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has submitted his educational and other relevant documents to INEC, it stated that Buhari is rather seeking ways to short-circuit the system, instead of complying with set rules. The statement reads in part: “A situation where President Buhari has been dodging the certificate issue raises huge questions of integrity, which demands that he makes available his credentials, or apologize to Nigerians, if he has none, so that the nation can move ahead. “President Buhari knows by now that Nigerians are no longer interested in his claims in an affidavit wherein he stated, ‘I am the above-named person and the deponent of this affidavit herein. All my academic qualification documents as filled in my Presidential form, APC/001/2015 are currently with the Secretary of the Military

Board as of the time of this affidavit.’ “PDP maintains that integrity strictly demands that President Buhari, particularly as the commander-in-chief, writes to the military authorities directing them to forward his claimed credentials to INEC, as requisite evidence of compliance with a key requirement for election into the Office of the President, under section 131 (d) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended). “That President Buhari and the previous INEC succeeded in circumventing the law in 2015 does not make such acceptable in our current electoral process. “President Buhari and the All Progressives Congress, APC, must realize that even their followers, that were beguiled in 2015, are currently not prepared to accept ‘NEPA bill’ as WAEC certificate in the 2019 elections. “This is particularly as the certificate scandal contributes to the erosion of Mr. President’s rectitude to check the humongous corruption, ineptitude and recklessness among his officials which has brought the nation to its knees under his administration.” The PDP further claimed that the President’s “failure to tidy up such grey areas also contributes to his inability to cultivate and earn the productive followership of the youth and the respect of the international community, resulting in retardation in national productivity and dearth of international development partnership in the last three and half years.”

Prison congestion: Kano has highest number of pre-trial detainees - CURE Yakubu Salisu, Kano The Executive Director, Citizens United for the Rehabilitation of Errant (CURENigeria), Sylvester Uhaa, has revealed that Kano state has the highest number of pre-trial detainees in the country which has resulted in over population of the state’s prisons. He made the assertion on Thursday in Kano during a summit on Justice Reforms and Human Rights in Kano State, organized by CURE in Collaboration with the NHRC NorthWest Zonal Office and the state’s Ministry of Justice with the support of NBA, Kano Branch. According to him, access to healthcare, Justice, feeding and rehabilitation programs remain critically poor as many of the prisons in the country were built more than 100 years ago with many not experiencing

any significant renovation. He decried the excessive and abusive use of pre-trial detention which according to him, is one of the biggest forms of human right violations in the country that is often ignored with Kano state yet to domesticate the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJ-ACT). According to Uhaa, of the over 70,000 prisoners in Nigeria, more than 50,000 are awaiting trial, representing over 70 percent, making Nigeria the fifth country with the highest awaiting trial population in Africa trailing Libya. Sylvester opined that, rather than recruiting more security agents and provision of more equipment, Government should invest more in welfare and social programs such as Education, Job creation, infrastructure and poverty alleviation programs, as the best way to combat crime which leads to incarceration and over population in the state prisons. He said that, reducing the number

of pre-trial detainees will resolve prison overcrowding, limit the spread of diseases and save tax payers money and spur development. Speaking at the occasion, the Controller of Prisons, Alhaji Magaji Ahmad Abdullahi, also expressed concern over the overwhelming number of awaiting trial inmates numbering about 1,523 in the state’s two main prisons. According to him, the prisons in the state are faced with the problem of over population with inadequate facilities to Carter for those in detention which often leads to management crisis. Abdullahi also noted that, the prisons, have no facilities for mentally challenged persons in detention, making it difficult to cater or such persons in the conventional system. He called on stakeholders concerned to assist in the process of decongesting the prisons by working in accordance with the provision of the law as it relates to the matter at hand.

Short News Army discover shallow grave IFAD-VCDP to replicate Commodity where missing general was buried FG, Alliance Forum across Nigeria Kingsley Chukwuka, Jos The youths who allegedly killed the retired missing Army General, Idris Alkali on September 3rd, celebrated after pushing his car in a mining pond at Dura Du of Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State, says the General Officer Commanding, 3 Division of the Nigerian Army, Major General Benson Akinroluyo. “The irate youths who followed his car to the abandoned mining pit filled with water on many tri-cycles popularly known as “Keke NAPEP” jubilated for reason best known to them or for mission accomplished. He was later buried in a shallow grave in an area popularly known as, ‘No man’s land’ within the community”. Gen. Akinroluyo sated this on Friday in Jos while giving journalists an update of the Cordon and Search Operation on the Missing Major General, Idris Alkali (Retired). Akinroluyo explained that the death of Idris Alkali was as a result of a reprisal attack which occurred as a result of 11 persons who were killed in Jos South LGA at a shopping mall on the 2nd of September 2018 by unknown gunmen. He said, “You would recall that on 2 September 2018 at about 8:00pm, unknown gunmen attacked a shopping complex located

at Lafande Community on the outskirt of Jos metropolis in Dura-Du District of Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State. As a result of the attack, 11 people were killed while others sustained various degrees of injuries. The attack triggered protest by the people of the area on the morning of 3 September 2018. Irate youths in their hundreds trooped out, blocked the Eastern Bypass with stones and other dangerous objects. The immediate past Chief of Administration (Army), Major General Idris Alkali who recently disengaged from the Nigerian Army after 35 years meritorious service to the Nigerian Army and the country was travelling from Abuja to Bauchi via Jos same day. The senior officer was travelling alone in his black Toyota Corolla car with registration number, KWARA MUN 670 AA. Credible intelligence revealed that his car was stopped and he introduced himself as a general to the hoodlums who had barricaded the road that he was just passing through to Bauchi. The senior officer was assaulted and killed. Thereafter, his belongings such as clothings, cash, phones and laptop were shared by those who killed him. His body was dragged before being moved to somewhere else and his car was driven and pushed into the abandoned mining pit filled with water”. The Army boss explained that while the car of the Missing General was found in the pond, the youths who perpetrated the act moved swiftly to exhume his corpse from a shallow grave where he was buried to an unknown destination, as confessed by those who were

picked and interrogated. “On 29 September 2018, when the general’s black Toyota Corolla car was recovered from the abandoned mining pit, those involved and those not involved in the killing of the senior officer held a meeting to relocate his corpse away from the community. This is because of the inherent danger it would attract to the community. Consequently, a 10 man team was constituted to relocate his corpse earlier buried in a shallow grave within the community to elsewhere. A specialist in preservation of corpse was contracted. The specialist assisted in exhuming his corpse from the shallow grave to elsewhere. Only few trusted members of the community knew where his corpse was relocated to. The specialist is currently in our custody. Again, this is an attempt to cover up the heinous crime committed by the community. There exist other evidence and indicators that pointed to the fact that those who were involved in the killing of the senior officer are being supported and backed by community leaders within the DuraDu District. In recent times, they have been staging press conferences and writing petitions in order to smear the image of the Division in particular and the Nigerian Army in general. This Division will not yield to the antics or blackmail by those who have committed this dastardly crime. Therefore, the following people at large have been declared wanted by the relevant authority based on their degree of culpability in the killing of the senior officer”, Gen. Akinroluyo said.

The Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development is collaborating with IFAD-Value Chain Development Programme (IFAD-VCDP) to replicate the Commodity Alliance Forum (CAF) initiative across the country. She said that the replication of CAF was in the light of the successful execution of the programme in Anambra, Benue, Ebonyi, Niger, Ogun and Taraba states. She said CAF had successfully galvanised the productivity of smallholder farmers and their access to markets in the rice and cassava value chains, using the innovative Public Private Producer Partnership (4ps) model. Onyilo said that the CAF stakeholders’ relationship had yielded significant results, citing the receipt of 150,000 tonnes of rice paddy from rural farmers in the participating six states as one of major feats.

Ekiti govt seals buildings linked to ex-Gov Fayose Gbenga Sodeinde, Ado Ekiti Two buildings in Ado Ekiti linked to the immediate past Governor of Ekiti State, Mr. Ayo Fayose, have been sealed off by the state government for lack of approved plan and permit. The state government, through the Ministry of Housing and Physical Planning and Urban Development, said the erection of the buildings contravened the laws guiding urban renewal regulations of the state government. Fayose is currently being tried at the Federal High Court, Lagos, by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over alleged reception of a sum of N2.99 billion from the office of the former National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki , to fund his reelection in 2014. He is presently being detained at the EFCC custody in Ikoyi, Lagos State despite that he had been granted bail since Wednesday. The sprawling twin duplexes with elevated fence, covering over six plots, were located at the

Government Reservation Area (GRA) in Ado Ekiti and almost adjacent the new Deputy Governor’s lodge located within the Government house. When journalists visited the building on Friday, the gate to the building was under lock and key while contractors working on the buildings have deserted the place. A paper dated October 18, which was attached to the gate and signed by the Director of Urban and Regional Planning in the Ministry said: “It was discovered during inspection by the inspectorate staff of our Ministry that a residential building by you at GRA has no approved plan / permit for the site or bring same to our office to get certification for the erection. “You are hereby ordered to suspend the use of the building premises until approved plan is submitted for clearance”, it stated. The contractor handling the project began work about four months ago after the buildings erected on the plot were pulled down to give way for the new edifices. Before Fayose exited office, rumour had been

rife that he was the owner of the magnificent buildings. In his response, Fayose accused Fayemi of embarking on vindictive action over issue that doesn’t worth government’s attention. In a statement by his Media Aide, Idowu Adelusi on Friday, Fayose said: “Governor Fayemi was only acting out of desperation and vengeance over the 2014 shameful electoral defeat. “The property in question does not belong to Fayose. Fayemi’s government should produce evidence linking the former government to the property. “Fayose has said he was ready for probe and that he will appear in person before any panel set up by Fayemi, so, why the desperation? “Our advice is that, Fayemi should place high premium on payment of the workers’ salary arrears since N30 billion is already in his custody released by the Federal Government and not embarking on witch hunting or disparaging his predecessor. The money should not be used to fund the election petition filed against him.

God gave me a perfect fat leg to carry the big behind -Nkechi Blessing Sunday Endowed actress, Nkechi Blessing Sunday spoke with MUTIAT ALLI about her supposed big size, falling off the stage at the recently held City People Movie awards, her supposed beef with Ghanaian actress, Juliet Ibrahim, and her dream role amongst others. Enjoy… What is your new movie, Unsane about? The movie is about a particular guy who has medical issues but his not aware of it, most time he acts like a complete idiot; even though I am not willing to give out much about the coming movie until its out but meanwhile it’s a fantastic movie Nigerians should look out for because it’s going to make you stay glued to your TV from start to finish. Why the title, Unsane and not Insane? Well because of the purpose of the storyline, using Insane as the title will not be appropriate because Insane in actual sense means a complete mad man while as regards our own title which is Unsane is that fact the character in the movie is normal but sometimes act weird; that is the plot twist in the movie. I will have gone for the title ‘Complete Idiot’ but I wanted something unique and a straight title. So what is the language structure of the movie? The movie is shut in complete English language because I don’t think we spoke up to 10% of Yoruba through-out the shooting. It’s just time to up the game in the industry and we seriously getting there. Is it a cinema Job? For now I can’t say that but since we commence shoot, I can see that I am shooting a huge project that needs huge viewings which might be going to cinema. What is the estimated budget of this movie? Quite a lot of money; so I can really put a peg amount on it. We have spent a lot and still spending. A lot of people a times consider you as upcoming artiste; how do you react when such comments are passed towards you. I get that a lot but am not actually moved by that because as long as people appreciate my creative process, I am good to go as I won’t allow such compliment to deprive me of giving my best at all time. I have been in the industry for quite sometimes now, precisely from 2008-2009. I have been in the industry for say 10 years, so if you are in that category of people that still tag me upcoming that mean you have not been watching well. It took

me a lot of hard work to be where I am today and I appreciate God almighty for his immense grace. It took you seven years to be known after your movie, ‘Omoge Lekki’ pushed your face out; what do you think you did right now? For me, I think social media really helped my career a lot most especially the instagram platform because I talk a lot on social media and maybe that is more the reason a lot of people have tagged me drama queen which I don’t care as long as I am getting the attention that I need. They say when a lady is been tagged a drama queen and when she eventually gets into a serious relationship, she tend to mellow down; are you emotional? I am drama queen when it comes to everywhere that is when I am on set or off set because I don’t like to be cheated but that does not mean I am not submissive or I can’t be tamed. So what can someone do to tame a person like Nkechi? Maybe 500 million naira You are blessed physically, how do you feel when you walk around and people tend to complement you based on your backside? The honest truth is that I am used to such complement because even while we were filming a street scene and I was required to walk around, a lot of passer’s by were just screaming but because such is already part of me. I did not mind because I won’t remove that part of my body. Don’t you sometimes feel embarrassed when the compliment is too getting too much? Never!! Because I know I have got a beautiful behind and I can’t be unhappy with what God gave me. How do you feel when people tend to appreciate your curves more than the beauty itself? They have no choice than to see the curves before the beauty because it is obvious and cannot

be hidden; you cannot hide God’s blessings and I am very comfortable with it at all time. I have always been comfortable with my body from day one. While I was growing up, I was very skinny but a very big ass and now while growing up, I have a bigger body and all my body parts rhyme together and the fact is God gave me a perfect fat leg to carry the big behind. You fell at the City people Movies award; how did that happen? My colleague Jumoke Odetola won the Best actress category which I was equally nominated too, so I went on stage to cheer her up and while coming down the stairs and I don’t know where a glass cup came from and it gave me a cut on the leg. How did you now feel that after the fall, the next category that was called, you won? That is what I call grace because when I took a fall, the award rose me up. Didn’t you feel embarrassed when you fell? I was not because with the blood stain on my leg, I walked majestically to the stage to receive my award because when I fell, I thought it was normal but it was not as so many enemies were in front of me who did not even stand up to assist me. Those that I know and won’t like to mention their names were even laughing at me. A lot of people were of the opinion that at the point comedian Woli Arole slapped you; a miracle venza car came in for you?

Woli Arole is my very good friend and to correct that impression, I bought my car in the US and it took two month to get to Nigeria. All the while my car was on the way and the slap came in between, so for people to say that it’s just normal. What is your present relationship with Ghanaian actress Juliet Ibrahim after you both had a social media argument? I have apologized to her and moved on but she blocked me and that’s her business. I am at peace with myself because I did apologize and she never accepted it. Have you met her before? Not at all Do we see a case where you can invite her to your movie set? Off course I will if she answers Do you still have a dream role you want to play? Yes and that is the role of a mad woman because I want to portray myself as a versatile actor; I have played quite a lot of roles and also I look forward to playing a ghetto kind of role where I will showcase the rough side of me. What will you consider the most interesting part of your job? There are a lot but the one I appreciate more was when I paid in dollars in the movie ‘Ghost and the Tout’ as produced by Toyin Abraham.

Between K1 and Saraki Fuji music living legend, K1 De Ultimate has dismissed the video making the rounds that he is supporting the presidential ambition of Senator Bukola Saraki. K1, who likened that to artifice, said he is highly disappointed that someone like the Senate president can be involved in such a fraud because it is evidently clear that the only person he is rooting for to become the president in 2019 is no other than President Muhammadu Buhari. This he has shown by telling the world where his loyalty belongs at every occasion lately. K1 has also on countless occasion granted interviews to several media organisations that he is for Buhari till 2023.

According to the Fuji king, the only time he had an encounter with the senate president was at the marriage ceremony of Mohammed Mustapha’s son in Ilorin in 2015. So, he has no right to circulate any song without his approval; doing so amounts to fraud. K1 said he is already talking with his lawyers to seek redress on the matter. He is also using this medium to sound it clear that he will never ever endorse someone who has acted as a betrayal to his party right from when he assumed the office till the time he left the party for the opposition. “I remain a strong party member and the only person I support to become the president in 2019 is Muhammadu Buhari,” he concluded.

Prof. Ahmed Ahidjo’s advice on uterine fibroid The Nigerian Society of Interventional Radiology (NISIR) has revealed that about 25% of Nigerian women in their reproductive age are living with uterine fibroid unaware. At the first Annual Scientific Meeting of NISIR in Lagos recently themed ‘Minimally invasive therapies, benefitting patients, saving lives’, the President NISIR, Prof. Ahmed Ahidjo, noted that uterine fibroid can be well treated with the inclusive interventional radiology procedures. Speaking on the birth of NISIR, Ahidjo said it is a new organisation first established in 2010 at Akodo, Lagos State to enhance the art and science of interventional radiology and research through educational, scientific, literary, advocacy, regulatory and professional activities. “We started this year’s back and now the society is expanding. I will say the government should intervene in providing this medical service. We are all complaining of medical tourism, most of those seeking for international medical attention also go for this same interventional procedures. We are calling on the government to help assist to establish a national centre of interventional radiology in Nigeria which will serve as a training centre and a service providing centre for the general population. “We will also want to plead with the

government Prof. Ahmed Ahidjo to help initiate an intervention radiology centre in each of the teaching hospital in all geopolitical zones. The burden is getting too much that the hospitals can’t do this on their own without government intervention. On the objectives of the organization, he said “the promotion of interventional radiology at appropriate forums especially in the West African Subregion. In pursuit of its objectives, NISIR aimed not only to address but to also provide suggestions and solutions regarding the important issues which currently face interventional radiology by adopting more of an active role within the radiological industry and the government and it relevant agencies. Member Board of Trustee, NISIR,

Prof. Abiodun Adeyinka, urged the government to consider a special budgetary for radiology and radiotherapy for sufficient funding. “We are very few for the number of the population of Nigeria. First, we should try appeal to the government to fund radiology and radiotherapy. Equipments are very expensive. And such should come from a different budgetary entirely. We need to draw government attention to proper funding. Another thing is that government must train us. With that we can build on human development” Adeyinka said Speaking on the essentiality of the organization, Chairman Local Organisation Committee, NISIR Conference 2018, Dr. Ifeanyi Ukachukwu said the society was setup to harness radiologists and to solicit for facilities to stop Nigerians from medical tourism. “Nigeria has a capacity and manpower for these services. The problem is not about manpower but equipments for treating patients. Patients can get better if they are treated with interventional radiology techniques and they are fast, and easy. We want as many doctors to know about this. For non-radiologists, we want them to cooperate with us by referring patients to us rather than referring them abroad. Money spent abroad should be reverse round in equipping our health facilities” he said.

Ahead of the 2019 elections, General Overseer and Founder of Christ Mercy Land Deliverance Ministry in Effurun, Delta State, Prophet Jeremiah Omoto Fufeyin has emphasised on the need for men of God to be careful while making political prophecies. Speaking with a group of journalists in Delta State recently, the Prophet said many men of God were always giving failed prophecies because it could change within seconds. He said: “This is a warning to all prophets and pastors who like to prophesise. Many have prophesized and many have failed. When making political prophecies, men of God have to be very careful so that they will not put their grace into shame or disgrace.

Prophet Fufeyin

When you prophesize to the life of a woman or man, who is contesting for a political office, you have to continue to pray about it until it comes to a reality.” According to him, when it comes to prophecies, God has the final say and it can favour anyone at any time. “God, in His Mercy, decides whatever He gives to His children. A prophecy can raise a man in a second and a prophecy can bring a man down in the next second. Since man doesn’t understand the ways of God, pastors or prophets must be very careful when making political prophecies. God can change His mind to favour anyone at any time; He has the final say,” Fufeyin admonished.

Lake Chad recharge is major investment America, Europe can do in Africa - Buhari Mathew Dadiya, Abuja President Muhammadu Buhari has said that the greatest investment Europe and America can make in Africa now is helping the continent accomplish inter-basin water transfer to recharge the Lake Chad. The President spoke at State House, Abuja, on Friday, while hosting the Chairman of the African Union Commission, Mr Moussa Faki Mahamat. President Buhari noted that the Lake Chad, which provided a means of livelihood to several millions of people in four countries

– Chad, Cameroon, Niger and Nigeria – has now been reduced to ten per cent of its originate size, due to the impact of climate change. “People who depended on the Lake for fishing, farming, animal husbandry, and many others, have been thrown into dire straits. That is one of the reasons youths now dare the Sahara Desert and the Mediterranean Sea, to seek greener pastures in Europe. But helping to recharge Lake Chad will help a great deal in curbing irregular migration,” he said. While noting that the size of Nigeria and resources available place a lot of responsibilities on her shoulders, President

Buhari pledged that the country would continue to fulfill its obligations to the African Union. “At all international fora, we emphasize the matter of Lake Chad. We also talk about the influx of small arms from the Sahel, which worsens the security situation between herders and stagnant farmers. We will keep the issues on the front burners,” the President emphasized. Mr Mahamat lauded President Buhari, saying his leadership was good for Nigeria, for AU, and for Africa in general. He added that the next AU Summit would look into the reform of the AU Commission,

positioning the AU and Africa in the world, Single Air Transport Market, the Africa Continental Free Trade Area, and other issues. Saying Nigeria has played major roles towards peace in countries like Guinea Bissau, Togo, Liberia, Mali, Sierra Leone, and many others, the AU Commission chairman submitted: “Nigeria is the engine of Africa politically, economically, and in the area of peace and security. Without her, Agenda 2063 cannot be accomplished. We depend on the elder to reach our destination in good shape. Nigeria is worthy of being followed. We rely on your wisdom to fulfill the task before us.”

Amazon makes $2.9Bn profit Q3y, as twitter surges in revenue growth Motolani Oseni Amazon reported Thursday that its profit in the recently-ended quarter rocketed to $2.9 billion in a ten-fold increase from the same period last year. Net sales at the e-commerce colossus climbed to $56.6 billion in the third quarter, a 29 per cent increase from the $43.7 in sales reported in the third quarter in 2017. Similarly, Twitter reported on Thursday stronger-than-expected profits and revenues in the third quarter, igniting a strong rally in shares of the key social network. The San Francisco group delivered a $789 million profit, including one-time gains, compared to a net loss of $21 million in the previous year, as revenues grew 29 percent to $758 million. Twitter shares rallied 12 percent in premarket trade following the results, as the markets

overlooked a dip in the number of users of the short-messaging service. Average monthly active users totaled 326 million, down from 335 million in the previous quarter. The company said the drop came from efforts to weed out fake and inauthentic accounts. The recently enacted privacy rules in the European Union also had an effect. The record profit included one-time gains from tax and asset valuation adjustments. Excluding those items, profits amounted to $163 million. Twitter said the drop in its user count was a direct result of efforts to improve the “health” of its platform by removing fake and abusive accounts. “We’re achieving meaningful progress in our efforts to make Twitter a healthier and valuable everyday service,” said chief executive Jack Dorsey in a statement. “We’re doing a better job detecting and removing spammy and suspicious accounts at

sign-up… This quarter’s strong results prove we can prioritize the long-term health of Twitter while growing the number of people who participate in a public conversation.” Twitter and other social networks have faced challenges in curbing manipulation and weeding out “hate speech,” but Dorsey said the removal of abusive content will be beneficial for the platform in the long term. “We do see health as a growth sector over the long term,” Dorsey told analysts on a conference call. “Our purpose is to serve the public conversation, and we have a singular purpose… which is increasing the health of that conversation.” Twitter has managed to swing into profit over the past few quarters after years of losses, but it has struggled to grow its user base beyond a core of celebrities, journalists and political figures. It has sought to expand its appeal with new

services, including live video. Twitter claims its estimate of daily users, which it says reflects engagement, was up nine percent in the past quarter but offers no specific numbers. Advertising, which makes up the bulk of Twitter revenues, grew 29 percent over the past year to $650 million, according to the earnings report. Twitter said it had 67 million monthly active users in the US in the quarter, and 259 million internationally. Despite its unique offering of near real-time information, Twitter has lagged behind other social networks such as Facebook and Facebookowned Instagram. According to the research firm eMarketer, Twitter’s share of worldwide social network users is expected to drop slightly from 10 percent in 2018 to nine percent in 2022. In 2018, Twitter will take a 1.8 percent share of display ad revenue worldwide.

The Federal Government has expressed its determination to promote and increase indigenous participation in the shipping business in Nigeria. Minister of Budget and National Planning, Senator Udoma Udo Udoma on Friday told the Nigerian Fleet Implementation Committee on Thursday, in Abuja. The Minister who gave the indication while receiving the Committee members in his office, said government will provide the necessary support to enable the Committee carry out its mandate. Udoma noted that increased indigenous participation in the maritime business would help to realize the country’s diversification drive being a major thrust of Nigeria’s Economic Recovery and Growth Plan (ERGP). The Minister assured that apart from the fiscal incentives requested from Government, the Ministry of Budget and National Planning is willing to provide any other necessary support to enable the Committee succeed in its efforts to reposition the indigenous maritime sector and make it globally competitive. The Fleet Implementation Committee was set up by the Federal Government primarily to encourage and promote private sector participation in the maritime business and by so doing help in the diversification of the economy. Udoma acknowledged the importance of the Maritime Sector to the growth of business and the economy, and noted that apart from generating revenues for government, it also has the potential of creating wealth, providing jobs, generating foreign exchange, as well as developing the country’s transportation infrastructure. While commending the Committee members for the work they are doing, the Minister assured that Government is committed to growing the size of the indigenous fleet with appropriate incentives. The Chairman of the Committee, Alhaji Bello, told the Minister that maritime transportation is a critical sector in the economy of several countries; but regretted that with its vast coastline and abundant natural resources, Nigeria’s huge maritime potentials are yet to be fully explored for the benefit of the people. He explained that given the volume of cargoes that enter and leave Nigerian ports annually, the opportunity loss to Nigeria is huge because of Nigeria’s insignificant participation in the carriage of cargo to and from the ports. “This gives rise to huge outflow of financial resources in terms of freight paid by Nigerians to foreign ship operators and increasing the GDP and economic wellbeing of their home countries”, he pointed out. The Committee consequently solicited government support to ensure that fleet development with requisite incentives becomes the focus of implementation priority in the Government transport infrastructure programme.

Harmattan: Experts want aviation agencies minimise flight disruptions Chukwuemeke Iwelunmo In ensuring safety on the runways, experts in safety want agencies in the industry to collaborate and imbibe the culture of sharing of information; this is just as the need to improve upon and upgrade critical safety facilities is also stressed. As the harmattan season is approaching characterized by low visibility due to dust haze, fog and mist, the experts said to minimize flight disruptions during the period, navigational aids, runway markings, airfield lightning must be calibrated to ensure they are working optimally and safe flights on the airside. Speaking at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport 2018 Runway Safety Week in Lagos, with the Theme: Low Visibility Operations on the Airside, Importance and Consequences, the Director General Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority, NCAA, Captain Muktar Usman noted that in Africa 60% of fatal accidents in aviation are runway related. He observed that between 2015 and 2016, the then management of NAMA started working on how to reduce disruption of flight operations during the period of low visibility which was encountered between the months of November to February with the advent of harmattan. ” this period of the year is characterized by a drastic reduction in visibility sometimes to as low as between 350-450 meters, before the current review the minimal use to be 800 meters ILS operations and the minimum 1,200 meters for a VOR operations even at the best of times in most cases will not even be able to achieve all this and most of our carriers will be on the ground.” According to the NAMA boss, this have ripple effects on the quantity and amount of revenue, they would have been able to collect, adding that there would be reduction in revenue generation with other attendant implications. Since them, he added that, ” NAMA management has out in place a think tank, a thinking team in place to see the possibility of not only employing artificial intelligence if possible but equally seeing the possibility of using intelligent assistant so that we can see how we could minimize the effect of weather, the effect of low visibility on our operations.” Managing Director, Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, Engr. Afreximbank: Trade Transformation is task for all financial institutions Motolani Oseni, Lagos African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) Executive Vice President, Business Development and Corporate Banking Amr Kamel has said that the transformation of trade in Africa is a task that all African financial institutions must collectively pursue as major stakeholders in its quest to facilitate African trade. Speaking during a roadshowin Dar Es Salam on Tursday, organized by Afreximbank for financial institutions to introduce the Afreximbank Trade Facilitation Programme (AFTRAF), Mr. Kamel, who was represented by Ademola Adeyinka, Consultant on Financial Institutions/Trade, said that Afreximbank was in a strong position to support African trade and African financial institutions and that it wanted African banks to see it as their partner of choice in international financing. “We understand African trade better than any other institution,” he said. “We were set up by African governments under a Charter that has been signed to by 50 countries, including Tanzania. We have a good credit rating that African financial institutions can leverage on and we have the ears of 50 African heads of state. That allows us to better understand the issues in each country, support the countries in finding

solutions to trade finance challenges and resolve issues that may arise easier.” Mr. Kamel emphasized that Tanzania was a key market for Afreximbank and that the Bank would want to do more transactions in the country. He explained that Afreximbank came up with AFTRAF in order to create opportunity for Africa to bridge the trade finance gap with the rest of the world, which had continued to grow. It was also to create the opportunity for African banks to enhance and complement existing trade finance lines with international financial institutions. Mr. Kamel said that, to address the challenges, Afreximbank would leverage its credit rating and supranational status to de-risk the perceived risks and unlock capital to support trade finance business in Africa. He announced that Afreximbank has onboarded about 170 African banks and that the target was to onboard 700 banks by the end of 2019. The Bank was also in the process of appointing some African banks as Trade Finance Intermediaries which would allow such banks to act as local administrative agents for transactions involving Afreximbank in their markets. He encouraged Tanzanian banks to take advantage of the opportunity by sending in their customer due diligence and know your customer (CDD/KYC) documents in order to be onboarded.

Mr. Kamel also requested Tanzanian banks to sign on to the MANSA Repository Platform which was created by Afreximbank as an online platform for CDD/KYC with special emphasis on African financial institutions. The platform provides a single source of primary data required for performing CDD checks and facilitating smooth onboarding of banks at reduced cost. Afolabi Obisesan, Manager, Guarantees and Specialized Finance, presented the features and processes of AFTRAF to the audience, highlighting the various products under it, including letters of credit confirmation, irrevocable reimbursement undertaking and letters of credit confirmation guarantee. AFTRAF has been structured to enhance confidence of counterparties in the settlement of international trade transactions for critical imports into Africa, support intra-African trade and facilitate the purchase of equipment for production of export goods. Also present at the roadshow was Sarah Siliya, Manager, Client Relations at the Afreximbank East African Regional Office. The roadshow next moves to Kigali on Wednesday and Accra on Monday. Represented at the roadshow were Barclays Bank, NMB Bank, Amana Bank, CRDB, Stanbic, CBA, UBA, Azania, TIB Bank and KCB.

Benin River Port: Govt meets host communities over resettlement plan Following the sealing of the final investment agreement by the Edo State Governor, Mr Godwin Obaseki, with the vice president of China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC), Li Yi, for the development of the Benin River Port in Gelegele area of the state, the state government is set to meet with representatives of communities that will host the facility.

According to Obaseki, the investment agreement with the Chinese partners includes the building of a port on the Benin River, dredging of the river which is a channel of about 40 kilometres, and the construction of a link road to the Benin bye-pass.

We expect that up to 30 per cent cargo going to the Lekki Deep Seaport would be meant for Benin port.” He maintained: “The construction of the Benin River Port would also provide opportunities to export agricultural and manufactured products being produced in the state. “We are investing massively in agriculture particularly in areas like oil palm, rubber, cassava, fruits and all range of agricultural produce which need to be processed and exported outside the country.” “There are companies operating in the state and are seeking to export their products. The port will provide opportunity not only to export agricultural produce but also some of the products that are now being manufactured in our area.”

APC Primaries: We took our position in interest of democracy, rule of law – Onilu The National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu during the week spoke with some journalists at the APC National Secretariat and addressed some of the party’s post-primary issues. TOM OKPE was there for The Daily Times. What do you think necessitated the media outburst of the Voice of Nigeria (VON), Director General (DG), Osita Okechukwu? He is a highly respected and senior member of our party, but you can also understand that this is not about him and the party, it is about his quest to pick the Senatorial ticket of his constituency and that is about ambition. When that does not happen, like the Yoruba would say, you won’t beat a child and say he must not cry. He has a right to ventilate his anger and it is for the party to also listen to him. He may have gone overboard making all sorts of unfounded allegations, but you also have to understand the situation that he is now, he lost out. If that same process had favoured him, he would be in his office in an air-conditioned atmosphere drinking coffee and taking a laugh at whoever was complaining, but that didn’t happen so you would expect him to complain. There would be someone to blame in such a situation so he has picked on the National Chairman unfortunately. But the chairman has no blame in this. If you have issues with the process, you can complain about the process. We had an appeal panel, you could take recourse to that. The internal mechanism for dispute resolution of this party is fairly strong and responsive and it is there for every party member no matter how high or low to access. And a lot of people have done that and a lot of such issues have been resolved. If he does have very good reasons to have redress, he would get that but he has chosen to go that path (Media) which is quite unfortunate. It is not everybody who has lost an election that has the capacity to soak it in. Some must express themselves in the way Osita Okechukwu has chosen to go about it. It is not about the National Chairman like I have said, it is about the fact that it is a party to the dispute and in such a situation, not everybody would win, some must loose. He lost it, in his reaction to it, everything he said was completely at variance with the real situation. He complained of great nepotism in the party There are five members for each state on the panel (which conducted the primaries), we have 36 states and the FCT for the National Assembly and he (Osita Okechukwu) mentioned only nine panel chairs (from Edo state). Definitely, the others are from some other states. By the time you add up the figures, you find out that the appointment of nine cannot be called nepotism in a situation where you have 36 states. When you pick what suits your cause that is what he has done, but

by the time all the facts are laid, there are no issues. Everything boils down to the fact that he lost out and he is not happy about it, there must be a culprit, somebody must be blamed for it. How about the complaints from Ogun State? It is a straight forward case. If we speak to the merit of this case, the whole world saw it, the visuals were everywhere, where the Ogun State governor gathered some aspirants, stakeholders and said clearly, there won’t be primaries and right there he pointed at who the next Governor, Senator, House of Representatives candidates would be. He named himself the next Senatorial candidate. Even if they had accepted those people, it is against the procedure, especially for a governor to openly say a thing like that. It was clearly stated, the party gave two options which is the direct and indirect primaries and you are to have stakeholders’ meetings where majority are to decide. In the case of Ogun, after that exercise failed after they tried to handpick who will be what, they sent a letter that they have agreed on direct primary and the party has no choice than to endorse what they wanted. On the day they all came for screening including the governor, he suddenly left with other aspirants and returned to Abeokuta; gathered some people and sent back to the NWC that they wanted indirect primary and the other aspirants said we were all here together, that they didn’t know when this change was made. Meanwhile, someone had gone to court and the court had barred the state executive from anything to do with the party, but we all saw on national television where the state governor and the state executive actually conducted their own primary and the process threw up the governor’s preferred candidate. It was the SSG in Ogun State, who was reading the result until it occurred to him that he had no power to announce the names, so he handed over to the state chairman of the party who also shouldn’t have done that – he is statutory barred, the court had told

properly conducted. The party tried to protect its members in the National Assembly for obvious reasons following what has been going on at the National Assembly. We know the carrots that had been dangled at them. We have a responsibility to ensure that we have a grip on the legislative arm of government so that we can run a smooth government. So we tried to protect our legislators. But the other people can only understand and accept that. If they say no, there is nothing the party can do. It is within their right to say we must go to the field. The initial effort of the party did not get the blessing of other people in that area who are also entitled to bid for positions. The primaries were eventually conducted, Senator Shehu Sani opted out, he relied on the earlier decision. At the end of the day, no matter what plan you have even though you are acting on expedience, rule of law, democracy will prevail. It was democracy that prevailed in Kaduna. Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu

him not to participate in the primary. Secondly, the state chairman has no power to conduct primary that power resides with the NWC. So, whatever the governor did was self-help and there is no provision for self help in the party’s constitution. Eventually the NWC panel that was constituted to conduct the primary went to Abeokuta and did the primary. The governor’s preferred candidate chose not to participate in that exercise. So the party stands by the result of that primary it conducted in Ogun State. The governor has done his best to get validation for his self-help. That is not possible. The first thing he did was to start saying things that made it look like something wrong has happened when nothing of such happened. Secondly, he took some monarchs to meet the President. I am surprised because someone like him, with due respect to him should have understood the nature of the President we have, that no matter how close you are to him, he will listen to you but he will ask for the

rules to be followed. So, the next thing we had was he was looking for who to blame, and Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and Chief Segun Osoba readily came to his mind and he blamed them for that. The question to ask is whether they were the one who gave directive to him to organise his own primaries or they were the one who instructed him not to participate in the primaries or his candidate not to participate in primaries the party organised. If he didn’t do all that and there has not been that consciousness to self appraisal, and I ask, have I done the right thing? Am I asking for what is fair? Am I not putting the party in a position to ask them to do what’s wrong? Those are the questions we expect governor of Ogun State to ask himself. He needs self appraisal, look at the actions he has taken and come to that conclusions that he’s taking the wrong route. How about Kaduna State? It was the outcome of the primary,

And Zamfara State too? We submitted list of candidates for legislative elections in Zamfara State, if INEC did not take it, it is a different thing. We have a right to submit and INEC has the legal responsibility to receive. INEC cannot disqualify candidates we all know that. We have said clearly that whatever claims that INEC is making is not correct or a true representation of what happened and we will continue to take progressive steps to ensure that INEC does what is right. How about Rivers State? The Supreme Court ruling on the Rivers APC governorship primaries has been subjected to different interpretations. As at today, the party has not yet taken a position on the ruling. We have a legal department and they will look into it and do what is right on it. The party will come out clearly on its position after studying the judgment. Imo State is not left out of this same crisis The issue of submission of governorship candidates to INEC falls due on November 2nd, so we haven’t reached the stage of where we will submit names or beat the deadline. You are aware that there was a court action challenging the Imo governorship primary election. The position of the party is that whatever court judgment, good or bad we must comply with it. We will only decide who will be APC’s governorship candidate for Imo State by November 2nd.

Nigerians will make good choice in 2019 - Obi Comrade Goodluck Obi, an activist and social commentator is the National Co-coordinator of Re–Elect Buhari Movement (RBM). In this interview with PATRICK OKOHUE, he speaks on issues surrounding Executive Order 6 and allied matters of national interest including the coming general election which he said President Muhammadu Buhari will win. Is ex–President Olusegun Obasanjo’s admonition that Nigeria’s next President must have a good knowledge of Economics not an indictment of President Buhari’s economic policies? It is a very bad thing if we try to arrogate to ourselves the position of a student and teacher. Obasanjo has no moral capacity to advise the country, Nigeria, because he once had the opportunity to rule the country for eight years. Having said that, I am not aware Obasanjo has any record of performance in the area of economy for him to advise the country that whoever must head us must be superlative in economy. Remember his recent visit to Indonesia where he raised the issue of the present government not signing a treaty and told the gathering a President who will sign it is coming. That was the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. What Obasanjo must understand is that the country has moved on from where he left it. We are not in that desperate era of 1999 when we wanted the Military to leave at all cost, and in that desperation we brought in a man who had little or nothing to offer. Also, his endorsement of his former vice is very funny, because as at 3rd of August this year, the same Obasanjo had said Atiku Abubakar is not a worthy successor. Don’t also forget that the same man declared the seat of the vice President vacant. Atiku had to go to court to reclaim his seat. So, Obasanjo should not be telling Nigerians issues about the economy or leadership. It is funny when he talks about some magical ideas about what the economy should look like. Don’t forget this administration inherited an economy that was at its lowest ebb and has tried to revive the economy. We have a President who has the best of economic experts around him, and so far so good, he has been able to stabilise the economy, so people should not sit in the comfort of their room and in Ota and begin to tell a country of about 200 million Nigerians how to rule their country. Don’t you think the former President’s position is informed by current statistics about poverty and unemployment rate? Job creation is not always the job of government. There is nowhere on earth that government creates jobs. No government can claim to have created jobs. What government does is creation of enabling environment for Jobs to be created, mostly by the private sector. I do not think the Federal Government and even the states have the capacity to employ unemployed youths. When you

also look at government policy on creation of jobs, it has been tailored towards the ‘you win programme of the last administration. Also, look at the social intervention programme of this administration- N-Power. What government does is to create the enabling environment for investors to come in. In most cases, when the environment is conducive, the artisans will do better in their businesses and by so doing expand their businesses. It is when business grows that you will talk about employment. Remember, we still have a crisis with the labour over the issue of minimum wage. It is part of the issues we are dealing with. In an environment where the economy runs itself, you don’t need to engage people on job creation, jobs will be created by the private sector. Government cannot put everybody into the civil service. It is not possible. It’s not done anywhere. If you go to other parts of the World, jobs are already waiting for you before you leave the university. I saw it in Holland. Government’s job is to create an enabling environment, so it is not about this government. Unemployment has been one of the issues our country has been facing since 1999. Why has government policies on this issue not worked? It has not worked because there is no sincerity of purpose, and I’m happy this President has come to change the narrative. It is under the Buhari Administration that we have seen that agriculture is thriving. There is a massive boom in that sector. That is why Brazil is bringing 1.1 billion dollars into the agricultural sector. The Ambassador said they are also setting up a tractor Assembly plant in Bauchi State. This is a part of the gains being recorded by this administration. Former Vice–President Attiku Abubakar’s business profile is being touted as an advantage in economic management, is this not a plus for him?

you that most of the elites may not even find their PVCs. They think they are still in the era where elitist advice would tinker the way the people will vote. The people have become wiser, and in 2019 Nigerians will determine their next President, not any other person.

Goodluck Obi

We are all aware that former vice president Atiku Abubakar is a retired customs officer and became Obasanjo’s vice president from 1999 to 2007. A good business man should be able to bring his area of specialisation to bare on the government. Let us Look at what the Customs generated under the administration he headed the economic team and the Buhari administration. zzzRecall that the late President Umaru Musa Yar’adua had to cancel some of the ugly economic policies of that administration which fell under Atiku. Nobody should deceive the people that Atiku is a wizard when it comes to business. These are smokescreen. Is it Atiku’s American University that the poor cannot afford? We should not allow a man who has no idea of how a country should be run to lead us. We are not going to be deceived by the PDP who

say we should dwell on issues without wanting us to talk about corruption. In all Atiku’s campaign, you will never find an area where you will hear him talk about corruption. Nigerians will not be fooled by those talking about a better economic manager. We should not allow anybody to take us back to where we are coming from. The APC National Leader, Bola Tinubu has admitted not less than twice that President Buhari and APC have lost some goodwill, is this not a minus ahead of 2019? Asiwaju Ahmed Tinubu may be right in his assessment being the National Leader of the APC and being an influential leader in the country. Having said that, I have always said those who will determine the fate of the current President are the Nigerian electorate, not the elite. I can assure

We should not allow a man who has no idea of how a country should be run to lead us. We are not going to be deceived by the PDP who say we should dwell on issues without wanting us to talk about corruption. In all Atiku’s campaign, you will never find an area where you will hear him talk about corruption. Nigerians will not be fooled by those talking about a better economic manager. We should not allow anybody to take us back to where we are coming from.

What is your take on the controversy surroundings Executive Order 6? There has been a lot of talk about the Presidential Executive order 6 now known as EO6. That was not the first Executive Order signed into law by the President. If you look at the Nigerian democracy, it is patterned along the American democracy. One thing I have discovered that whenever the government takes steps to deal with the menace of corruption, you always have those who have something to hide raising their voices to high heavens, but I want to assure those without skeleton in their cupboard that the government will not do anything outside the law. The judgement given by Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu of the Federal High Court, Abuja has made it very easy for every Nigerian to go about his normal business. No provision of order 6 will be brought to bear without the court. These are just administrative policies of government to strengthen the anti – corruption drive, so those who are talking about the violation of section 43 of the constitution have nothing to fear, if you have nothing to hide, and I think we should commend this administration, because every President since 1999 has always whittled down the anti – corruption war when we approach an election era, but here is a President who says he will continue to push against corruption even until the last day of the ballot. ********How do you juxtapose your position with that of senior lawyers who say such executives order devalues the constitution? Whatsoever any opinion any lawyer may have given on the issue of EO6, I think those opinions cannot be superior to the position of the Federal High Court. Don’t forget that those lawyers are also entitled to their opinions. It will be very wrong if we think that government policies will be received with joy at all times. That is why we have diverse opinions on issues like this, and I want to commend those lawyers that went to court to test the legality of the EO6 for taking that bold step, and also to appreciate her lordship for the verdict. I do not want to dwell much because I understand that they have gone to the court of Appeal. I will rather stand by the President on EO6 than dwell on the opinion of senior lawyers

Maiden Ibru raises the roof as MUSON hosts “My Kind of Music” The Music Society of Nigeria MUSON is celebrating its 22nd edition of the famous annual fair called MUSON Festival. With the event already kicked with stream of activities that started on October 17 at its Agip Recital Hall and to end on October 28, one that has garnered much buzz is the Personality guest show tagged: “My Kind Of Music” From the inception of this festival, My kind of Music has attracted high class audience because of the type of guests featured. This year’s edition held on Thursday October 18 featured among the list four prominent personalities from different sectors of the economy but with similar interest in music. They include Lady Maiden AlexIbru, chairman, and publisher, Guardian Newspapers, Engr. Oti Bazumu, CEO, Osaka Telecomms. Nig and founder, Lagos Jazz Series; Adeyemi Akinsanya, Solicitor, Advocate & Notary Public and Ugomma Adegoke, Creative Entrepreneur and Gallerist, anchored by Arch. Kitoye Ibare. To say the least, all are music personified as they made music choices that reflect their age time and season of reckoning.

While Oti Bazumu with his strong musical background made most selection of Jazz beats, Ugomma, though the youngest among the list did represents her contemporary with good selections that tell her age. As Bazumu’s jazzy choice are from Miles Davies and John Coltrane, there are remarkable stories behind each choice. Perhaps, the most noticeable is Coltrane’s music “The Lord Supreme.” Bazumu noted that this particular track attracted comments and controversy in the studio by his band members saying, ‘you have played this particular beat time and time over.” To Coltrane, it meant heaven for him and while track was played on stage, the high rhythmic masterpiece of Coltrane’s signature tells good of the music. For Ugomma, variates choices made was rapped with a hitech symphony by The Verve’s “Bitter Sewwt Symphony” For Adeyemi Akinsanya, most of his choice reflected his age, basically orchestra music but he also mellowed with a song from the Preacher wife movie sang by Whitney Houston. However, there was a moment of reckoning when he stired the audience with

a peculiar choice - Tom & Jerry’s soundtrack, “Overture.” This particular choice cut everyone attention and Akinsanya made good the story behind it. It is a song everyone should be familiar with but never paid heed so much. Then Lady Ibru; her features were very sensational. From Nina Simone to Mary J. blidge and down to Nigeria’s Timi Dakolo “Iyawo mi.” This song got some people off their feet with noticeable couple dancing. The chairman, Guardian Newspapers brought the show to a new dimension when her choice was a moment of ‘bring the roof down.’ Over the years, several guests have tried to dance a bit of their favourite choices but Lady Meiden AlexIbru decided to introduce a dancing session with members of the audience joining her. The last song was Electric and this particular song shakes the hall with an unplanned stage performance by her and some ladies who gigged in the true steps of the music. It was really a night to remember having heard the audience craving for more. Meanwhile, the MUSON Festival continued with other programmes that include art fair, talent hunt, drama, musical and jazz party.

Ethiopia’s first female president can be a force for reform Awol K Allo On October 25, a special joint session of both houses of the Ethiopian parliament accepted President Mulatu Teshome Wirtu’s letter of resignation. The muchrespected president’s resignation was a surprise to many, yet it soon became clear that this was yet another meticulously planned move by Ethiopia’s reformist Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed. The very same morning, seasoned diplomat Sahle-Work Zewde was appointed the country’s fourth president under EPRDF rule, an era which began in 1991. With this appointment, Zewde also became the second woman in the country’s modern history to serve as head of state. Ethiopia’s last female leader before Zewde was Empress Zewditu, who had governed the country between 19161930. President Zewde has a successful public service career spanning decades. Her first ambassadorial appointment in service of her country was in 1989 to Dakar, Senegal with additional accreditation to Mali, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Gambia and Guinea. During that time, Ethiopia’s brutal military-socialist regime was still in power and Ethiopia’s civil war was at its peak. When the military regime was overthrown two years later, most government ministers and highranking public servants were either purged or arrested, with most Ethiopian diplomats serving the country abroad requesting political asylum in the countries they had been residing in. However, even during this tumulous time, Zewde chose not to abandon her post and continued to serve the new regime. She quickly gained the trust of the new leadership with her diplomatic competence and managed to stay in the ranks of the foreign service. Since then, Zewde served Ethiopia as an ambassador in many countries across Africa and Europe. Eventually, she moved on to serving the international community at large, especially through her work at the United Nations. With her extensive experience working across conflict-prone nations in Africa, Zewde has helped the UN in its peace-building efforts in the Central African Republic. Zewde’s final role at the UN, however, was arguably the most important. She was the first woman to be appointed by the international body as special representative to the African Union and

Newly elected President Sahle-Work Zewde addresses the House of Peoples’ Representatives in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia head of the United Nations Office to the African Union, a role she served at the level of undersecretary-general. Zewde’s appointment as Ethiopia’s new president came on the back of another surprising, but very welcome development. On October 16, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed announced that he decided to fill 50 percent of his cabinet with female ministers. Ahmed’s decision to have a gender-balanced cabinet was applauded in Ethiopia and beyond, but it was partially clouded by the fact that cabinet appointments are not always based on merit in Ethiopia. In this country, prime ministers are inescapably hostage to a culture of coalition politics, where party interests triumph over the interests of the people. Thus, despite the symbolic importance of the realisation of a gender-balanced cabinet, for some these appointments were not as important a victory for Ethiopian women, and Ethiopian people in general, as they’ve been trumped up to be. However, this appointment is unquestionably

momentous and groundbreaking. In spite of the fact that, in parliamentary Ethiopia, the office of the presidency is very much ceremonial, most Ethiopians respect and look up to the president. Anyone who serves in that role gets the opportunity to build a personal legacy, and leave their mark in the country’s history. Moreover, the office of the president is a bully pulpit that allows its holder to have direct access to the country’s prime minister and gives them an opportunity to comment and offer advice on political events. The head of state also presides over special parliamentary sessions and delivers speeches on the parliament opening sessions where he or she presents what the priorities of the government should be. Having a woman take over such a revered office is undoubtedly going to inspire millions of Ethiopian women. However, the ways in which Zewde’s presidency is really going to affect the condition of women in Ethiopia will be determined by the causes she is going to champion and prioritise throughout her tenure.

Ethiopia embarked on a reform process six months ago and the changes its new leadership promised to make to achieve better governance and democratic improvement are slowly materialising. However, the country is still carrying the wounds of a devastating civil war, years of oppression and ongoing ethnic tensions and conflicts. And the burden of all this has been felt the most by Ethiopia’s women who, on top of losing their husbands, sons and brothers in conflicts and being displaced from their homes, also had to navigate their lives in a highly patriarchal society. For example, problems within the country’s education sector such as the meagre level of access to education in rural Ethiopia is still affecting women more than men. Beyond all this, Ethiopia still suffers from one of the highest maternal mortality rates in the world. Although there have been promising improvements, to this day, most Ethiopian women give birth at home. In light of all this, Ethiopian women desperately need a heroine who can be their voice and allow them to be heard clearly and loudly by the leadership of the country. This heroine can and should be the country’s first female President Zewde. To achieve this, she needs to make the empowerment of women the priority of her presidency. Zewde has already implied that she is willing and eager to take on this duty during her acceptance speech before the joint session of the parliament. At some point in her speech she even joked: “if you think I am talking a lot more about women, well, I have not even started.” President Zewde is now in a position to help implement important reforms that would significantly elevate the life quality of the most under-served and most well-deserving segment of the country’s citizenry: women. The fact that the current head of government, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, is a feminist reformer will likely help her in this journey. Ethiopian women are undoubtedly happy to see a woman in one of the highest offices of the land. But beyond providing mere inspiration, what they expect from their new president is to actually change their lives for the better. Only time will tell whether President Zewde will be able to live up to their expectations. AWCON: Falcons opponents set for international friendlies

Nigeria’s Group B opponents South Africa, Zambia and Kenya have all been lined up to face Ghana’s Black Queens in international friendlies ahead of the 2018 Women’s CAF Africa Cup of Nations. The Ghana FA which is still operating under the supervision of a Normalization Committee is said to have reached a deal with the three teams, who are also bound for the tournament.

Coach Bashiru Hayford’s side are expected to depart from Ghana on Tuesday October 30 to Zambia where they will engage the She-Polopolo in an international friendly match scheduled for November 3. The team will then leave Zambia on November 5 to Kenya where they are expected to play their Kenyan counterparts in a pre-tournament friendly game on November 7.

The Black Queens will return to Ghana on November 9 and will wrap up preparations for the competition with a friendly match against South Africa’s Banyana Banyana before commencement of the tournament on Saturday November 17. Ghana are in group A alongside Algeria, Mali and Cameroon with their group stage matches to be played at the Accra Sports Stadium.

FIFA doubles prize money for 2019 Women’s World Cup

FIFA will raise the prize money for the Women’s World Cup from 15 million dollars to 30 million dollars. The raise is starting with next year’s edition in France, FIFA President Gianni Infantino announced on Friday, though critics immediately said the increase was not enough. Following a FIFA council meeting in Rwanda, the Swiss-Italian also said that 20 million dollars would be made available for pre-tournament preparations, meaning that 50 million in total would be allocated across the 24 participating nations. The prize money is double the amount awarded in the 2015 World Cup in Canada and for the first time clubs will be rewarded for their players taking part in the tournament, as is the case in the men’s edition. “It’s a very important message for women’s football. It will certainly boost this World Cup even more,” Infantino told a news conference. However, global footballers’ union FIFpro said the changes were not enough to redress the inequality between men’s and women’s football worldwide. “FIFPro notes the willingness of

FIFA to increase prize money for the Women’s World Cup and make structural improvements to support women’s football. ”However, despite these changes football remains even further from the goal of equality for all World Cup players regardless of gender,” a FIFpro statement said. “In reality, the changes actually signify an increase in the gap between men’s and women’s prize money. This regressive trend appears to contravene FIFA’s statutory commitment to gender equality. “We strongly support our members, women’s national-team players in multiple countries, who have written to FIFA in recent days expressing their dismay about the distribution of prize money.” Players’ unions in Australia, Norway, Sweden and New Zealand had written to world soccer’s governing body to protest that even with women’s prize money being doubled, the rewards in the men’s game still dwarf the new amounts. The total prize money for this year’s men’s World Cup in Russia was $400m, with champions France receiving $38m. The letter from Australia’s PFA argued: “For the group stage alone, players in

Iwobi has shone in Super Eagles midfield, Kalu, Jamilu Collins good additions – Rohr Arsenal ace Alex Iwobi has again been praised by the Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr by how well he has done in the central midfield, while rating Samuel Kalu and Jamilu Collins highly after stepping up in the national team. “Iwobi plays more centrally now, which has worked quite nicely,” Rohr told Kick Off Magazine. “Samuel Kalu is also a good new addition, so too Jamilu Collins. “They have clicked well with the others in the dressing room.” OPINION: Iwobi Flying With Eagles From Midfield Leicester City star Wilfred Ndidi will be suspended for next month’s AFCON qualifier against South Africa after he bagged his second booking against Libya. Rohr admitted Ndidi will be missed,

Gareth Bale handed £300,000 fine for tax fraud

but also said he hopes to call up his strongest team so as to get a result in Johannesburg on November 17.

Australia Men National Football Team, Socceroos, have shared 2.4 million dollars for the FIFA World Cup Russia 2018. Meanwhile, Australia women’s national soccer team, the Matildas will only share 0.225 million dollars , less than 10 percent. “If the Matildas are to become World Champions, they will only receive 50 percent of what the Socceroos received for qualifying for Russia.” Infantino said that FIFA was committed to consistently increasing investment and cited the launch of a new strategy for women’s football earlier this month. The strategy included plans to strengthen the game in all 211 member associations. “Clearly… we want to invest more and earmark more for women’s football and not only for the best 24 teams in the world who play the World Cup. ”We have increased significantly the allocations and prize monies, but we have a duty to do so all over the world,” he said. “Also in these regulations there are specific requirements for all associations in the world that in order to receive the necessary grants they have to organise women’s competitions, otherwise they don’t receive these grants.”

Rohr: Super Eagles want revenge against South Africa Gernot Rohr has said the Super Eagles will be seeking to avenge a 2-0 home loss against South Africa when both teams battle again next month for places at the 2019 AFCON. Bafana Bafana recorded their first-ever official win over Nigeria in June 2017 when they won 2-0 in Uyo. The two teams clash again on November 17 in Johannesburg with Nigeria needing just a point to qualify for Cameroon 2019. Rohr said the home loss to South Africa still rankles and he hopes his team could now get their pound of flesh. “The defeat still hurts and we want to take revenge for it,” the coach told Kick Off Magazine. “They beat us with strong counter attacks in Uyo. “We dominated the game and

Gareth Bale has reportedly been fined nearly £300,000 by the Spanish authorities for using a UK company to avoid paying tax on his image rights earnings. El Mundo claim the Spanish Tax Agency are demanding Bale coughs up £297,704 for defrauding taxes. The Spanish Treasury believe Bale should have paid for his commercial income in 2013, the year he signed for Real Madrid. It is claimed Bale failed to pay the £176,679

Bale used London-based Primesure Limited to receive commercial income in 2013, according to the investigation. Despite not considering Bale as a tax resident in Spain for 2013, the Treasury believes the commercial income the Welshman earned while

players absent at the time, with that match taking place in the break between the seasons. “I’m happy that everyone will be available this time around and that our team can get revenge for that defeat.” Rohr picked striker Percy Tau as his best South Africa player.

playing for Real Madrid that year should have been subject to the 19 per cent tax. Bale’s commercial income was instead paid into Primesure Limited in the UK and not in Spain. Unlike other footballers in trouble with the Spanish tax authorities, Bale’s case is not being considered as a fiscal crime. Several Real Madrid players have had problems with the Spanish tax authorities in recent months including Luka Modric and Marcelo.

Inter Milan appoint 26-year-old Steven Zhang as new president Inter Milan have appointed 26-year-old Steven Zhang as their new president, the Serie A club said on Friday. Zhang, who becomes the 21st president in the club’s history, is the son of Zhang Jindong, chairman of China’s electronics retailer Suning Holdings Group which bought a majority stake in the club in 2016. He has been on the board of directors for the last two years and has effectively been responsible for the day-to-day running of the club. Inter announced the appointment by posting a video on social media ‘The club, its people and the city have been waiting for you,’ it said. ‘Welcome, President Zhang.’ ‘When I close my eyes, I see a city with so much history and more to be written’, said Zhang in the video. ‘People with ideas, with the will to improve what’s around them and themselves. ‘A club that plays beyond the field to win the hearts of everyone. But then I open my eyes and see that all this is already here. I’m ready, are you?’ Zhang will replace Indonesian Erick Thohir who has been president for the

Caroline Wozniacki diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis last five years. Inter are currently in third place in Serie A, six points adrift of leaders Juventus. Meanwhile, Luciano Spalletti’s side are in second place in their

Champions League group following the 2-0 defeat away to Barcelona on Wednesday. They return to league action on Monday night with an away game against Lazio.

Jose Mourinho admits Alexis Sanchez is ‘struggling’ Manchester United winger Alexis Sanchez is struggling with an adductor injury, manager Jose Mourinho has revealed. Sanchez has been ruled out of Sunday’s game at home to Everton and didn’t feature in the Champions League defeat to Juventus in midweek. The Chile international has struggled for form this season, and Mourinho admitted that the injury has affected Sanchez’s game. Speaking in his pre-match press conference, Mourinho said: ‘In this moment he is struggling because he is injured,’ said Mourinho. ‘Struggling with his condition and he is the kind of player that needs to be really sharp to play his best game.’ Sanchez featured as a late substitute in United’s draw against Chelsea last weekend but his involvement only aggravated his injury. Mourinho said: ‘In this moment he’s struggling because he’s injured and we

come to the Chelsea match to try to help the team but his physical condition was not good and then he had to stop and was not available for Juventus and is not available for tomorrow again, so now is to be physically in the best conditions. ‘He arrived January, in the first period of the season for him, I don’t think is ever an easy situation for a player but this season he had a good start a good preseason, he started well against Leicester, and then he was injured. ‘Then he came back and was injured again and he is the kind of player that needs to be really really sharp.’ Sanchez arrived at United from Arsenal in January amidst much expectation but he has endured a difficult time at Old Trafford. So far this season Sanchez has mustered just one goal in eight appearances and is growing disillusioned with his situation at United. The 29-year-old is hoping that Paris Saint-Germain can offer him

an opportunity to escape his United nightmare in January, but his £500,000-a-week wages may prevent such a move from occurring. United go into the game against Everton having won just once in their last seven matches across all competitions.

Former World No.1 Caroline Wozniacki was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis before the US Open. The 28-year-old reigning Australian Open champion revealed the news after the conclusion of her WTA season, which ended with a 5-7, 7-5 6-3 loss to No.7 Elina Svitolina in the final round of group play at the BNP Paribas WTA Finals Singapore presented by SC Global. “In the beginning, it was a shock, just you feel like you’re the fittest athlete out there, or that’s in my head, that’s what I’m known for, and all of a sudden you have this to work with,” Wozniacki told reporters. “Yeah, it is what it is, and you just have to be positive and work with it, and there are ways that you can feel better so that’s great.” “It’s been a lot to just take in. After the US Open, I just kind of had to figure out what really was going on. So that’s when I really figured it out. I went to see one of the best doctors that there is and, you know, start treatment. “You know, at the end of the day, it’s obviously not ideal for anybody,

and I think when you’re a professional athlete, it’s also not even more ideal, but at the end of the day, you find a plan, figure out what to do, you do your research, and thankfully there are great things now that you can do to it and do about it. “You just kind of move on from it and work through it and figure out how to deal with it and live with it. That’s that. I’m very proud of how I have been so positive through it all and just kind of tried to not let that hinder me.” Wozniacki told reporters she began feeling fatigue after Wimbledon and woke up one morning in Montreal unable to lift her arms over her head and retired from her opening match in Cincinnati. After talking to doctors, Wozniacki was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis, an autoimmune disease that causes swelling of the joints and fatigue. She says she’s happy to have caught it early. “I think I didn’t want to talk about it obviously during the year because I don’t want to give anyone the edge or thinking that I’m not feeling well, but I have been feeling well,” Wozniacki said.

Udinese: William Troost-Ekong not injured Udinese of Italy have confirmed that their Nigerian defender, William Troost-Ekong, is not injured, adding that he was only replaced in last weekend’s match due to tactical reasons. While affirming that Troost-Ekong is not suffering from any physical blight or setback, Udinese disclosed that the Super Eagles star has been involved in training with the squad since their resumed on Tuesday. The Udine-based club further revealed on their official website that the former Tottenham Hotspur of England youth team player, who has also starred for FC Groningen of Holland, Haugesund of Norway, KAA Gent of Belgium and Bursaspor of Turkey, is fit like a fiddle. The Serie A club, however, hinted that Troost-Ekong had to be replaced after only 35 minutes of last weekend’s fixture due to tactical reasons from

their coach, Julio Velazquez. Before then, Udinese had earlier disclosed barely 24 hours after their 3-0 home defeat by Napoli at Dacia Arena on Saturday evening that Troost-Ekong was among the players that participated in the recovery workout. Troost-Ekong joined The Bianconeri for the session on Sunday morning; taking part in jogging and running exercises, but they all got Monday off and returned to the pitch on Tuesday for drills at 10:30am and 5pm.
