the importance of Arts and culture as consistent sources of economic growth, during both good and difficult economic times. “The art and culture industry has become one of the major contributors to so many countries’ gross domestic products and Heritage Bank is committed to supporting it because it is part of Nigeria’s heritage,” he said. According to him, Heritage Bank has continued to make efforts in supporting ideologies like this, using arts as a tool to promote cultural awareness and to help younger Nigerians form a strong sense of National identity and peaceful coexitence. He assured that the bank would always be driven by cultural heritage, as the initiative aligns very much with the vision of the bank, which is to help partners create, preserve and transfer wealth across generations. The Heritage Bank MD noted that if government at all levels adopt the right
arts and culture policies and programmes, it will increase economic development in attracting businesses, creating new jobs, increasing tax revenues and promoting tourism. However, Sekibo urged banks to support arts and culture through investments in programmes that will promote economic development, jobs creation, and community revitalisation at the three tiers of government. Earlier while declaring the festival officially open, Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike, who commended Heritage Bank and other sponsors, said NAFEST provided a platform for the states to make the most of the nation’s culture, adding that culture empowers humanity by improving interpersonal relationships. He said, “Over the years, NAFEST has become the veritable platform for the 36 States and the Federal Capital Territory to meet, showcase and make the most of our cultures and diversity.” He stated that the essence of the festival was to promote
national peace, unity and cohesion. “Whether we agree or not, our diversity is what defines and binds us as a nation under the glorious sun. Although our tribes and tongues may differ, we are a nation bound by a common destiny and firmly glued together by the spirit of brotherhood, cultural harmony, and inter-ethnic solidarity instead of discord, tribalism, nepotism and sectionalism,” the governor explained. According to him, NAFEST provides creative images and expressions to engage our leaders on the politics of nation-building, human rights, regional integration, inter-ethnic harmony, national peace and development. In his remarks, the Director-General, National Council for Arts and Culture, Otunba Olusegun Runsewe, commended Rivers Government for uplifting arts and culture in the country, which has contributed immensely co-existing peace and economic growth.
Entertainment industry, key to Nigeria’s economic growth, Osinbajo, Ambode Mutiat Ali, Lagos Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, have re-emphasised the importance of the entertainment industry to Nigeria’s economic growth, assuring that the sector would continue to enjoy support to maximize its potentials. The duo spoke at an event at the weekend organised for entertainers and tagged “An Evening with the Vice President” held at the Eko Hotels and Suites, Victoria Island and was well attended by scores of entertainers including actors, comedians and musicians, among others. Osinbajo reassured stakeholders in the entertainment industry of the Federal Government’s commitment to support them to enhance national growth and development, adding that they remain key players in the nation’s all round development and Government was not oblivious of it. The Vice President said he had met frequently with entertainers with a view to developing policies around the industry for economy growth, revealing that the government decided to create Technology and Creativity Advisory Council to see how the government could move the industry forward through proper policies, especially on how to address the issue of piracy.
“No sensible politician can ignore entertainers; if you do, you do so at your own risk. Entertainers also cannot ignore politicians; it is impossible. If you do, you do so at your own peril. “Already, there is a lot going on. Your industry has to respond to what is going on. This industry is important and crucial to our economy. “We must set up the environment that will make it happen. No environment is completely ready; whatever it is that we have at the moment, we have to make the maximum use of it to grow this industry,” he said. He said it was gratifying that some entertainers were already in politics and urged others to participate, in order to make a change and a difference. “Your support is actually important. What we need to do is to sit together and solve the problem. The country is what it is today because some people stole the treasure,” he said. In his remarks, Governor Ambode said the state had always been the hub for entertainers and would continue to support the industry to grow the state’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). He also called for synergy between the Government and entertainers in order to create a convergence to grow the economy of not just the State, but also Nigeria. “I just want to promise this time around that whatever
it is that we have done as a government in the last three and half years, we have proven that the arts and entertainment industry can actually create a convergence with the culture of the city and then promote tourism using that convergence to grow the economy of Lagos and we have proven that. “So, beyond our action, there are other things that have to do with the framework, the things that have to do with copyright and access to capital to promote the entertainment industry and I hope that within the next one hour, we should be able to tell ourselves the truth on which way we can actually push this synergy to create that grows the GDP, not only of Lagos but the GDP of the whole country and we would be able to attract tourists to this country,” Governor Ambode said. Also speaking, Sen. Goodwill Akpabio, who promised to support the industry as he had also been, assured the entertainers of government’s readiness to help them on issues of legislation. Akpabio, who noted that the artistes were ambassadors of the country, urged them to promote Nigeria’s oneness. Many of the artistes, who spoke at the event, identified the challenges in the industry as piracy, distribution of artistic works, poor power supply, lack of infrastructure, censorship, licensing, and access to credit facilities, among others.

2019: APC senator, BoT member in war-of- words Tunde Opalana, Abuja Former Yobe State Governor and a serving senator, Bukar Abba Ibrahim (Yobe, APC) and a member of Board of Trustees (BoT) of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Alhaji Nasiru Danu, have expressed divergent views over the chances of the party during the 2019 polls. Sen Abba Ibrahim has claimed that current situations of the socio- political and economic trends in the country are indicators of an imminent defeat for President Muhammadu Buhari and the ruling APC in the 2019 general elections. He also claimed that his party (APC) has failed on virtually all pre-2015 election promises, saying that social and economic conditions of Nigerians have been worsened by the Buhari administration as he claimed that the people are bitter. But Nasiru Danu, the APC BoT member, has debunked the claims of Sen Abba Ibrahim, saying that the ruling party is addressing the infrastructural deficits in the six geo-political zones in the country despite challenges. Danu added that it was laughable for an APC senator whose wife is a serving minister to castigate his party for selfish reason, knowing that the party is doing its best in fulfilling its campaign promises. The three times former governor fired the first salvo when he said that as a progressive, his hopes have been dashed by the supposed progressive party that has lost every tenet of progressivism and not better that the previous
Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) it sought to replace. Sen Ibrahim dropped this bombshell on Saturday night in a 17-paragraph speech he delivered at the world-wide internet launch of a book he co-authored with Dr. Sam Egwu, titled: Poorlitics, at the Barcelona Hotel, Abuja. He went ahead to declare that nothing will save Buhari from the imminent defeat as realities on ground show that Nigerians are worse off under him within the last three and half years than they were throughout the 16 years of governance under the PDP from May 1999- May 2015. His words: “As we move towards the elections, I have to give a dire warning to the APC that things are no longer the way they were in 2015 when we road to power on a cloud of euphoria believing that things will change for better. “Simply put, things have not changed and many things are getting worse and the people are bitter. We should not assume that we can win even with massive rigging. “The economy has gone down because of our action and inaction and we are blaming the past too much rather than solving the present problems. “I had in mind that Progressives will be in power and will show Nigeria how to run a progressive nation. “Without mincing words, as an elder statesman, I must say that my dreams and hopes have been dashed. We have certainly not done what I dreamed we will do, and in many ways, we are no better than the PDP that we sought to displace”. To save the party of iminent

defeat, Ibrahim projected certain things that progressive such as APC profess need to do and must be seen to do. He said: “We must be seen to obey the rule of law. If courts rule, we must obey. We must respect the separation of powers and let the legislature make its Independent decisions”. He also chose the occasion to set an agenda for the North East geo-political zone comprising Yobe, Borno, Bauchi, Gombe, Adamawa and Taraba states ahead of 2019 polls, saying the support or otherwise of the people of the zone for Buhari’s candidacy and the APC is not automatic but conditional. Senator Ibrahim said the North East should not be taken for granted since it is not a must for it to support Buhari from the North West as both zones only came together for the first time under one political umbrella in 2015 since several decades of party formations and democratic governance in
the country from 1950s till date. His words: “In fact, the politics of the North East has always been different from the politics of the North West and it was under APC that we all united for the first time. “I am going to give a dire warning. Let the North East not be taken for granted that we must support the APC. “Our interest in the North East has always been progressive and I will personally be watching for required improvements in the APC before the elections. “Improvements that can guarantee victory such as respecting the rule of law and releasing political prisoners as well as unselective war against corruption as against one sided witch hunt”. He categorically stated that if the APC under Buhari did not get its bearings in terms of good governance before the 2019 general elections, the North East will have no any other option than to vote for candidate of another political party. It is instructive to note that former Vice President and PDP presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, is from Adamawa State in the North East zone.
Gov Sani Bello seeks collective, stakeholders approach to national security
Niger State Governor, Alhaji Abubakar Sani-Bello, has said that solution to the nation’s security challenges requires collective and all stakeholders approach. The governor also stressed the need for Community Policing in order to checkmate the pockets of security challenges, especially in the rural areas. Governor Sani Bello stated this after commissioning of a block of 20 room hostel he donated to his alma matar, the Nigerian Military School, Zaria, Kaduna State, shortly after Passing out Parade of 77 Regular Recruits Intake, 77RRI of the Depot, Nigerian Army. The Governor, who is an Ex- Boy (Ex-Boys are those who attended Nigerian Military School as Boy Soldiers), was accompanied by the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt. General Tukur Buratai at the commissioning. He added that for a lasting solution to the nation’s security challenges, all hands must be on deck. He said: “Security is everybody’s responsibility now. It is not just for
the police or army or any security agency alone. Everybody and indeed our traditional institutions should be up and doing. “Nigerians also need to be vigilant, especially those in the rural areas. It is necessary to know who are the people coming into our communities and from where they were before settling in our communities”. The Governor said the need for collective efforts in attending to the country’s security challenges has further strengthened the call for Community Policing, especially as an effective platform for nipping the pockets of security challenges in our rural areas. “As a governor, I have found out that Community Policing is required to nip the activities of miscreants formenting security challenges in our communities in the bud. “Community policing is very important, it has been found to be a reliable source of providing necessary information and intelligent gathering by security agencies for effective security of our communities,” Governor Sani Bello
maintained. Elated that he was able to give back to his former school, Gov. Sani-Bello urged other old boys of the school to come to the aid of the centre of academic excellence. “We are happy to have been able to give this little (hostel block) back to the school. I appeal to other exboys to come to the aid of the school. We owe this school for the positive impact it had on us”, the governor appealed. In his own comment at the occasion, COAS Buratai, commended the efforts of Governor Sani-Bello in donating the block hostel to the school. Earlier at the passing out parade of about four thousand recruits, Buratai said that the recruits are coming at the right time to fill the manpower shortage at a critical time the country is faced with security challenges. Also with Governor SaniBello were the state Chief of Staff, Hon Mikhail Almin Bmitosahi, Commissioner for Finance, Alhaji Zakari Abubakar, some of classmates at NMS and associates among others.
“I shall sit back and continue encouraging my party do the right thing. But if we don’t, I still reserve the capacity to ask my people to go our separate ways and do what must be done for good governance to reign in Nigeria,” he added, Faulting the claims of Sen Bukar Ibrahim, the APC BoT member, Nasiru Danu said: “I hope the distinguished Senator is not being misquoted. This is because he is a respected leader of the ruling APC. “But if it is true that he said what you quoted him as saying, then I disagree with him. It is wrong for any member not to talk of party leader that we have not done anything. That is not true on the grounds of what is happening nationwide. The records are there that the APC has done well. “The APC-led Federal Government is doing its best to address infrastructural deficits in the six geo-political zones without discrimination on party affliliation despite some challenges. “The senator knows and he is aware that Yobe State is one the greatest beneficiaries of the APC and it still work in progress. “For the records, President Muhammadu Buhari- led Federal Government came to power on three distinct agendaWar against corruption, security and revival of the economy. The President and his team have been working on these agenda in the last three years and the party is going to run on its achievements to win the 2019 polls. “We know that there are issues arising from the primaries in the party. But all the stakeholders are currently working to resolve the contentious issues. The time has come to stop the blame game. The APC is the party to beat in 2019 and we will win the presidential election by the grace of God.”
Buhari, PDP, others mourn as Tony Anenih dies at 85 By Mathew Dadiya, Tunde Opalana, Abuja and Titus Akhigbe, Benin President Muhammadu Buhari has extended his heartfelt condolences to the Anenih family on the death of its beloved patriarch and elder statesman, Chief Anthony Anenih. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain died on Sunday at the age of 85 In a statement made available last night by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr Femi Adesina, President Buhari also condoled with the government and people of Edo State and the PDP on the passing on of their illustrious son and former Chairman, PDP Board of Trustees.
The statement reads in part, “As a frontline figure in the annals of our country’s political history, the President attests that Chief Anenih lived a life of service, as State Chairman of the National Party of Nigeria (NPN), National Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), chieftain of the PDP, and a former Minister of Works. “President Buhari affirms that across the political spectrum of Nigeria, Chief Anenih was known for his strong views on issues pertaining to the unity and stability of the nation. “The President prays almighty God to grant Chief Anenih’s soul eternal rest and comfort all who mourn the octogenarian.” The former Minister of Works, who

NAFEST 2018 ends in style in Port Harcourt ...mourn as Tony as 25 states show unity in diversity Anenih dies at 85 Amaka Agbu, Port Harcourt
The colourful display of the nation’s culture and tradition ended on a high-note in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, at the weekend as 25 participating states showcased the diversity of the nation at the National Festival of Arts and Culture (NAFEST) 2018. NAFEST 2018 which was described as a masterstroke saw Rivers State emerging as the overall best state of the festival. Bayelsa State emerged second place, Ondo State took third place, Federal Capital Territory (FCT) emerged fourth place while the overall fifth place went to Delta State. Traditional musicians, cultural dancers, traditional acrobats and masquerades displayed during the closing ceremony at the Sharks Stadium in Port Harcourt.
Top government officials from different states of the federation were led by the Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike, his Ebonyi State counterpart, Dave Umahi, the Abia State Governor, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu, and the Director-General of the National Council of Arts and Culture, Otunba Segun Runsewe, joined thousands of spectators to appreciate the rich cultural heritage of Nigeria. Speaking at the closing ceremony, Governor Wike said that NAFEST was not just a competition, but a platform to promote the culture of Nigeria. He said: “I see NAFEST not as a competition, but a showcase of our diversity and cultural heritage. Let us use culture to unite this country. The entire country is here and we are celebrating in unity. Apart from sports, culture is the uniting factor in
Nigeria”. He described Rivers State as the economic nerve centre of the country, which is the most peaceful state for investment and hosting of events. “With the successful and peaceful hosting of NAFEST 2018, we have made another statement that Rivers State is safe and secure. Rivers State has hosted the PDP National Convention, NAFEST, and the Presidential Visit without hitches,” he added. The Rivers State Governor announced cash gifts of N5million to each of the 25 participating states. Ebonyi State Governor, Dave Umahi, said at the occasion that if politics and religion had failed the nation, culture would unite the country and enhance her greatness. He said that NAFEST Rivers 2018 would serve as a
springboard for the greatness of the country. The Director-General of the National Council for Arts and Culture, Otunba Segun Runsewe, in his own speech, said the outstanding Rivers Show proved that Nigeria was a great country. The Chairman of the events, Chief Ferdinand Alabraba, said that NAFEST 2018 did not disappoint as it achieved the core objectives of the festival. He said NAFEST 2018 had set a new standard by which future events would be measured across the country. Highpoint of the closing ceremony was the presentation of different categories of prizes to winners. There was a colourful closing parade by the states, while guests witnessed a star performance by international musician, Duncan Mighty.
2019: Obasanjo, Atiku can’t match Buhari on integrity test - APC spokesman Tom Okpe, Abuja The Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Yekini Nabena, has said that on integrity contest, not former President Olusegun Obasanjo or his deputy, Atiku Abubakar, can beat President Muhammadu Buhari any day. He noted that the though Obasanjo had once described Atiku Abubakar as a corrupt, disloyal and unpatriotic leader who was not fit and proper to handle the mantle of Nigerian leadership, this is enough to rubbish any sudden endorsement from him. Nabena, who stated this while speaking with some journalists in Abuja on Sunday, pointed out that Obasanjo contradicted himself when he made a volte-face to tell Nigerians that he has forgiven Abubakar.
He said: “Throughout their second tenure in office, 2003-2007 and until a fortnight ago, former President Olusegun Obasanjo had described Alhaji Atiku Abubakar as a corrupt, disloyal and unpatriotic leader who was not fit and proper to handle the mantle of Nigerian leadership. Only recently, Obasanjo vowed that God would not forgive him if he supported the Presidential aspiration of Atiku as, “it would amount to handing Nigeria over to sharks and looters”, he said. The APC Deputy Spokesman stated that soon after his (Atiku) declaration, Obasanjo made a volte-face and announced that he had forgiven Atiku and that he had decided to also support his presidential aspiration, adding that “Obasanjo’s message to Nigerians therefore was that his former deputy, whom he had accused of various acts of corruption, had suddenly
become clean, credible and prepared to lead Nigeria. What a contradiction? “When a supposed national leader makes declarations that are subject to change at any time based on his mood, such a leader loses integrity and reliability, “It is surprising that Obasanjo who had accused Atiku of corruption tendencies, suddenly turned around and declare the sinner, forgiven and eminently qualified to govern Nigeria. “It is this tendency towards indecision, insincerity, double talk and deception that has made Nigeria ridiculed in the eyes of the international community. A statesman is known for his principles and his statements are based on the strength of his convictions”, the APC spokesman noted. He also faulted the integrity and nationalistic image being brandied by the PDP’s 2019 vice
presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, decribing him as doublefaced and pretentious, saying that many world-class shopping malls owned by Mr. Peter Obi sprang up in various cities in Nigeria soon after he left office as Anambra State Governor. “Nigerians cannot be deceived, we have seen them all, Presidential Library, Bells and American University of Nigeria, Breweries and Shopping Malls, all established with largely public funds but privately owned by public officers. “President Muhammadu Buhari as a former Military Head of State and Petroleum Minister never attempted to acquire oil well, private jet or estates in Nigeria and abroad for himself or family so, made him different and stands out tall from the double-faced candidates seeking election,” he added.
Restructuring: Osinbajo goofed in reinventing history- Atiku Tunde Opalana, Abuja Vice President Yemi Osinbajo (SAN), has been accused of reinventing history and being economical with the truth in his statement that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar was against restructuring while in office between 1999 and 2007. The Atiku Presidential Campaign Organisation in a statement on Sunday berated Osinbajo for turning down history and being mischievous in his statement concerning Atiku’s niche for restructuring of the nation’s polity. Speaking at a public lecture, entitled: ‘Developing the Nation through Youth Empowerment’, as part of activities marking the 68th anniversary of the Sigma Club, University of Ibadan, Professor
Osinbajo said: “All this time, this was 2000, some of those people, including the presidential candidate of PDP, who is talking about restructuring, was the vice president then; they opposed every step that we took. Of course, we were taking the Federal Government to court then. They opposed every step.” Faulting the diverse views of President Muhammadu Buhari and Osinbajo on restructuring, the Atiku Presidential Campaign Organisation said there is evident desperation by the APC government to revise history, however, it is impossible to revise documented history. It urged Osinbajo to note that there are well documented accounts in the Nigerian media chronicling Atiku Abubakar’s support and struggle for restructuring.
“To set the records straight, we recommend to Prof Osinbajo the article ‘Nigeria: 6-1 OnshoreOffshore Jurisdiction Verdict’ written by Jide Ajani, then the Political Editor of Vanguard Newspapers and published on July 13, 2001. “ In that piece, which is still available online (see link https:// allafrica.com/stories/200107130417. html), Vanguard newspapers chronicled the successful efforts of His Excellency, Atiku Abubakar, to restructure the revenue allocation formulae to allow littoral states of the federation benefit from off shore oil proceeds. Ironically, it was precisely Mr. Osinbajo’s boss, Muhammadu Buhari, who as military dictator, cheated these states of their just due by military fiat. “It is also common knowledge that the six geo-political zones
structure which all parts of Nigeria benefit from today is the fruit of the collaborative efforts of His Excellency, Atiku Abubakar, the late Alex Ekwueme and other patriots. “Their efforts at restructuring Nigeria are captured in the Hansard of the 1995 Constitution Conference, which is a public document and is still available at the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation. Prof Osinbajo may want to familiarise himself with that document. “The question we want to ask Prof Osinbajo is this - why do he and his boss constantly resort to rewriting history? Why can they not campaign on their achievements? Is it that they are forced to campaign on subterfuge because they have no achievements to campaign on?” the campaign Organisation added.

Meanwhile, it was shock and disbelief on Sunday in Benin, the Edo State capital, when news of the death of Anenih filtered in. All was quiet at his house on Delta Crescent in the Government Reserved Area (GRA) Benin as the massive gate was under lock and key. The two security guards confessed that they were not aware of the death of the Iyasele of Esanland, adding that the younger son who drove in shortly before our correspondent visited at about 6 pm was inside and not disposed to talking to the press. The situation was also the same at the residence of his wife, Iyom Josephine Anenih, on Liberty Avenue, GRA, as the gate was under lock and key. However, in a telephone interview, a grief stricken, Mrs. Anenih, a former Minister of Women Affairs told The Daily Times-that she will only speak
after the family issues a statement. Another of his son, Mr. Usolo Anenih confirmed the demise of the former Minister of Works in a private hospital in Abuja after a brief illness, adding that the eldest son, Mr. Tony Anenih, Jnr. flew to Abuja from his base in Lagos and will issue a statement after a family meeting. Speaking in the same vein, the Edo State chairman of the PDP, Chief Dan Orbih, said that the party will only come out with a statement after the family officially broke the news of the death of the political titan. The Special Adviser to Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki on Media and Strategy, Mr. Crusoe Osagie, said that the government was aware of the death of Anenih but was only waiting for an official announcement from the family before its reaction. Meanwhile, the PDP has expressed shock over the news of the demise of one of its founding fathers, former Board of Trustees (BoT) Chairman and former Minister of Works and Housing, Chief Tony Anenih, the Iyasele of Esanland. The late Anenih was described as a great Nigerian, a light bearer, brilliant administrator, fine officer, quintessential nationalist and democratic icon, who made innumerable sacrifices for the unity, stability and development of the nation. The party’s publicist, Kola Ologbondiyan, said Chief Anenih, who was known in the political circle as “Mr. Fix it”, owing to his ability to find solutions to very knotty political and governance issues, remains a colossus with unparalleled array of legacies which will be celebrated for generations. “His roles in ensuring the stability, not only of our great party but also for our nation at large, stood him out as a patriot who dedicated his life for the service of humanity. “The PDP is particularly pained that Chief Anenih left the stage at the time the party and the nation needed his wealth of experience the more, especially in our collective quest to restore good governance and democratic ideals in our country”, he said The PDP condoled with the Anenih family, the government and people of Edo State and prayed that God will grant the nation the fortitude to bear this monumental loss.

The statement further said that the reception would see her meet with individuals who have made and continued to make exceptional efforts in promoting and enhancing the Canada-Nigeria relationship, adding that it would provide an opportunity to celebrate the vitality of the arts and culture scene in Lagos.
payment of promotion allowances Nkiru Nwagbo, Awka
Concerned police officers in Anambra State promoted from the rank of Inspector to Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) in 2017 have cried against delay of their allowances. Spokesman of the angry police officers who did not want his name in print, yesterday, claimed before journalists that the officers involved were promoted in May 2017 from Police Inspector to ASP without their promotion allowances between that May and December 2017 which he said amounted to N400, 000 per a promoted officer. He noted that some of them retired before December that year while police authorities continued to withhold their allowances with no reason given for the action. “Those serving were only paid as ASPs from January 2018 till date but the allowances from May 2017 to December 2017 have never been paid and no explanations are offered as to why we will not be paid the allowances.
Tension in Bayelsa over armed thugs attack on monarch Akam James, Yenagoa Ikeibiri community in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State was on Saturday enveloped with tension following attacks by suspected thugs on the Community Monarch, Chief Kingdom Orio, and many others over the disputed leadership of the community. According to a eyewitness, the suspected thugs, numbering about 30, and allegedly hired by the Chairman of the of the Community Development Committee (CDC), Abiola Beredou, invaded the community during a peace meeting to resolve the disputes over the Chairmanship of the Youth Leadership. Our correspondent gathered that the incident turned bloody when the suspected thugs invaded the peace meeting and beat up the Chief to a state of stupor and attacked those attempting to resist the invasion. A source also said that the attack, which would have led to killings, was thwarted by the arrival of military personnel stationed at Ogbeinbiri Oil Station in the Southern Ijaw Area. According to the source, “the suspected thugs invaded the Usaku Wari family meeting and they were led by the CDD Chairman of Ikebiri Kingdom who was imposed to the Community last December.”

Flood sacks over 2, 000 residents in Kwara Kehinde Akinpelu, Ilorin About 2,000 residents of Patigi in Patigi Local Government Area of Kwara were rendered homeless by flood as a result of heavy rainfall that lasted several hours. Member representing Patigi Constituency in Kwara State House of Assembly, Hon Shuaib AhmedAbdulKadir, made this known in a press release on Saturday in Ilorin, He said the over 2,000 affected victims were still unable to have access to their residences. According to the lawmaker; several of the victims have lost all their personal belongings, including farm produce to the flood, which had become an annual occurrence in Patigi
and its vicinities. “Large volume of water is yet to subside at the residences of over 2,000 flood victims and this was why they are still at the lDP camps,’’ he said. Ahmed-AbdulKadir attributed the annual flooding to heavy downpour and release of water from the Kainji, Shiroro and Jebba dams. He said the flood affected all schools in the area making it impossible for normal academic activities to take place. The Lawmaker said some stakeholders, organisations and public spirited individuals are currently assisting the victims on feeding and provision of other necessities of life. He therefore appealed to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), and Kwara
Government to provide immediate succour to the victims. While reacting to the incident, the Special Adviser to Gov. Abdulfatah Ahmed on Emergency and Relief Services, Alhaji AbdulRasaq Jimoh said the state government was aware of the plight of the victims. He said the state was working round the clock to provide succour for the victims. The flood victims include the aged, children, pregnant women and physically challenged are now taking refuge at three Internally Displaced Persons’ Camp (IDP) in Patigi. The flood has become an annual occurrence in Patigi and surrounding communities which damaged property and farmlands worth millions of naira.
Managers of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camps and Orphanages have appealed to the Special Military Task Force, (STF), to provide them with security considering the volatile insecurity situation in Plateau State. “Whenever there is crisis most of the children hardly sleep for fear of being attack. You know most of them narrowly escaped from terrorists in the north-eastern part of the country to this place, so the sound of guns still frightens them”, says the camp Director, House of Recab, Mr. Sam Akaakka Akaakka stated this on Sunday while appreciating the Special Military Task Force team in Plateau who visited the IDP camp to donate relive materials. He said the presence of the task-force around the camp will help reassure the safety of the IDPs. On her part, the house officer of the Plateau State Orphanage Home, Mrs Victoria Chikak, also emphasised on security, saying that the functionality of the orphanage home depends largely on how secured the environments are especially now that Plateau is witnessing civil unrest.
Ex-Gov Chime condemns attack on Enugu APC Chairman Moses Oyediran, Enugu Former Governor Sullivan Chime of Enugu state has described the attack on the state chairman of All Progressive Congress (APC), Dr. Ben Nwoye as unfortunate and condemnable. Chime’s reaction followed Saturday’s assassination attempt on Dr. Nwoye. Daily Times reported that Nwoye was at the early hours of Saturday escaped assassination attempt by heavily armed assassins who gained entrance into his compound at about 2:15 am but only succeeded in shooting one of the police details attached to him in the head. Reacting to the development, which has been widely condemned, Chime hoped the development was not a sign of what will come with the 2019 elections. He however called on aspirants who lost out in the primaries conducted by the party to drop all forms of hostility and help move the party in the state forward.

Atiku and the prophecy of Fashawe’s mother
Eric Teniola
The emergence of Alhaji Atiku Abubakar as the presidential candidate for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has compelled me to re-read a book on him by a colleague, Onukaba Adinoyi Ojo (1960-2017). The 338 page book was published in 2006 by Africana Legacy Press, and an autographed copy of it was given to me by Alhaji Atiku Abubakar on November 8, 2013. Mr. Onukaba Adinoyi Ojo died in a motor accident along the Ife-Akure road on March 5, 2017. The book appears to be the most authoritative book on the PDP presidential candidate. According to Onukuba, he had produced the book with the assistance of Amina Titi Abubakar, Ladi Atiku Abubakar, Princess Rukiya Atiku Abubakar, Jamila Atiku Abubakar, Adamu Atiku Abubakar, Governor Boni Haruna, Senator Jonathan Zwingina, Hamman Ahmed Kojoli, Yahaya Bala, Peter Okocha, Yomi Edu, Umar Ardo, Abdullahi Nyako, Chris Mammah and Nath Yaduma. Others who helped him in putting the book together included Otunba Oyewole Fashawe, Sola Akanmode, Patrick Adaba, Tokunbo Adeola, Jamilu Lamido, Mohammed Shata, Ambassador M.G. Samanki, Ahmadu Bode, Sa’ad Abubakar, Justice Abubakar Alkali Abba, Boss Mustapha, Maxwell Gidado, Onyeama Ugochukwu, and Garba Abdullahi. Also, Chubado Jada, Idris Yusuf, Chigbo Anichebe, Tunde Olusunle, Babalele Abdullahi, Muyiwa Oyekan, Chuks Anyanso, Garba Shehu, Adeola Akande, Shima Ayati, Jauro Sidiq and Koko Olugbesan. As far as those close to Atiku Abubakar, those mentioned are his core advisers. The narrative in the book is quite interesting, and on page 31 of the book, we were told of how Atiku Abubakar lost his father at the age of eleven. Otunba Oyewole Fashawe is the best friend of former President Olusegun Obasanjo. He is a Muslim and the Asiwaju of Owo in Ondo state. Interestingly, he is also Atiku Abubakar’s best friend. It is still a mystery how the man has been able to maintain his friendship with the two men, even through their fights with each other. On page 138 of the book, we were told
that, “Otunba Oyewole Fashawe was also eking out a living as a clearing and forwarding agent at Apapa Ports when Atiku met him. They had known each other as far back as Idi Iroko and Gamboru border post in the Northeast. “Whenever he was on duty, any clearing and forwarding agent who was not sure of himself would not go near him. He was strict and firm. He did not like agents who tried to cheat the government of its revenue. You know importers always try to cut corners to be able to pay lower duty. Importers put a lot of pressure on us agents. We had to be very careful with Atiku because he was a nononsense officer”, Fashawe remembered. One day at Apapa, Atiku was on tour of Customs’ facilities at the ports when he ran into Fashawe. He asked if Fashawe had set up his own licensed clearing and forwarding agency. Atiku had often advised Fashawe to set up his own company. Fashawe said he was yet to own a license. Atiku advised him to register a company and then apply for a Customs license so that he could operate legally. Fashawe registered Bako Services and Atiku assisted him in getting a license. “He assisted me without compromising his position”, Fashawe remembered. Bako Services would later become a multi-million Naira business with interests in many sectors of the economy”. Working under Bello Mohammed, the man Babangida gave the directorship of the Customs to, turned out to be the most frustrating experience of Atiku’s career. Mohammed was not comfortable having around him a person who had competed with him for the same job. He felt he could never trust Atiku, who would not be loyal and committed to his success on the job. He wanted Atiku gone. Thrice he recommended him for retirement, but Shagaya (the then minister of Internal Affairs) turned it down. Atiku went to see Shagaya and told him that he would like to leave the service voluntarily as he did not want to be disgraced out of office. However, Shagaya advised him not to quit. Atiku had at least 10 more years to go in the service and Shagaya felt he could still head the agency before his retirement. But Atiku’s soul
was no longer in the Customs. He needed to move on. He had always wanted to work for himself anyway. He asked for his annual leave and it was approved. He then left for the lesser hajj in Mecca, Saudi Arabia. Before his departure, Atiku had written his resignation letter, put it in an envelope, sealed and given it to a friend, Adamu Yaro, to hand it personally to Bello Mohammed, his boss. Adamu Yaro did not know the content of the letter but simply did as his friend had requested of him. Yet, the director was not happy to see Atiku go voluntarily. He briefed Shagaya about it and the Internal Affairs minister advised him to accept the resignation. By then Atiku had packed out of his Reeve Road official flat in Ikoyi and moved into a spacious, furnished guesthouse owned by NICOTES (his oil services company) on Bourdillon Road, Ikoyi. When he joined the Customs 20 years earlier, he had drawn a graph anticipating his career progression from cadet to director of Customs by the age 40. “I told myself that if by the time I was 40 years old I did not head the organisation, I would quit. Well, I almost did, I retired at 43 as a Deputy Director”, Atiku said. One of those Atiku consulted about his planned resignation was his old friend from Apapa Ports, Fashawe. He visited Fashawe in Owo, his hometown. And like most of his friends, Fashawe advised Atiku not to rush out of Customs until he had served as director. But Mrs. Lydia Ijamolayemi, Fashawe’s mother, had a different opinion. She advised Atiku to leave the Customs and embark on the journey God had destined for him. Five years earlier, she had visited Atiku in his office in Lagos and predicted that he would be presiding over the affairs of Nigeria sometime between the ages of 52 and 55 years. The matriarch of the Fashawe family was well known all over Owo and beyond as an extraordinarily gifted seer. On how Atiku entered politics. Adinoyi Ojo Onikaba wrote, “Look, you are good, you relate well with people. I think you will make a good politician. Why don’t you join me in politics”, Shehu Musa Yar’Adua told Atiku during one of their meetings. Atiku then consulted his family and friends such
as Adamu Bello, Adamu Yaro, Oyewole Fashawe and Magdiel Samanki. Some family members and friends advised him against it; they had wanted him to reach the peak of his career as Director of Customs before bowing out. Some felt that Nigerian politics was too messy, expensive, treacherous and dangerous to rush into. They urged him to reconsider his plan. Atiku likes to take his time before taking a decision as weighty as his next career move. But once he makes up his mind, he stands by it no matter the pressure on him to reconsider things. He can be quite stubborn. After mauling over the matter for sometime, Atiku finally decided to quit Customs and go into politics. By 1988, Atiku had started attending regular meeting at Yar’Adua’s Ikoyi home. The retired General had brought together an eclectic group of old and new politicians, progressives and radicals, intellectuals and the semi-educated ones, Muslims and Christians, Southerners and Northerners, and the rich and poor. He invited as many political leaders as were willing to come. He did not discriminate. For example, when some people protested against the invitation of Lamidi Adedibu, a controversial politician from Ibadan whose name had been associated with thuggery in the past, Yar’Adua overruled them, arguing that the group would someday need the Adedibus of Nigerian politics. Besides Adedibu, others invited to the new political association included M.S. Buhari, Yomi Edu, Chuba Okadigbo, Farouk AbdulAzeez, Patrick Dele Cole, S.M. Afolabi, Yahaya Kwande, Dapo Sarumi, Bode Ajewole, Babalola Borishade, Deji Fashina, Ishola Filani, Ango Abdullahi, Garba Abdulkadir, Tunde Oyeleke, Titi Ajanaku, Babagana Kingigbe, Tony Anenih, Akin Omoboriowo and Atiku Abubakar. Atiku knew some of them personally but there were others he was meeting for the first time. “Strange bedfellows”, was how some people described members of the political family that came to be known as the Yar’Adua Group. They were held together by Yar’Adua’s vision and determination to radically alter the politics of Nigeria by building a strong and popular party.”
Poverty anywhere is danger to prosperity everywhere
Owei Lakemfa
A beautiful looking lady, perhaps in her mid- twenties, smiles into the camera. The chubby-cheeked child she is carrying is wearing a cap, but he is shirtless. They are part of the over 7,200 Latin Americans who embarked on an estimated 17-day walk towards the United States (US) border. They had bid goodbye to their ancestral homes mainly in Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador. Many have just the clothes on their backs, the bags (some nylon) they are clutching, and their lives. Their determination is to get into the US by any means necessary. For this, they are trekking on roads and highways, through forests and fording waters including swimming and rafting the Suchiate River which separates Guatemala and Mexico . For such a desperate movement, virtually no threats can dissuade them, at least not the massive deployment of Mexican police and the threats of American President Donald Trump to cut aid to the countries they have left behind and to deploy the mighty American Army. Except the children being carried, these are thousands of mainly young and physically fit people, because only such persons can undertake such a grueling migration. These Latinos are like the Biblical Abraham who heard a voice in his native Ur, in today’s Southern Iraq, telling him “Go forth from your country, And from your relatives And from your father’s house, To the land which I will show you”(Genesis 12:1) The marked difference is that unlike Abraham, this exodus has a promised land it is headed to; the United States. The marchers are no different from the desperate African migrants who travel through the desert and take to the seas in unsafe rickety boats to get to Europe. The fact that this exodus was spontaneous, and its huge size, might be
an indication of the desperate situation in some Latin American countries characterized by mass unemployment, organized and unorganized violence, hunger and bad governance. The idea of this caravan had started when Bartolo Fuentes of the Freedom and Refoundation Party of Honduras reproduced a poster on his Facebook page inviting people for a migrant march with the slogan: “We’re not leaving because we want to, but because we are being expelled by violence and poverty.” The march commenced last week with 160 people from the gang-plagued city of San Pedro Sula, deciding to leave for a safe haven which they identified as the US. By the time this group reached the Guatemalan border, it had swelled to over 1,600 due partly to words of mouth, the mass and social media and the panicky response of President Donald Trump who was issuing threats rather than a more organized response to tackling a desperate human convoy. This is more so, when American law gives those fleeing violence, the opportunity of applying for asylum. Thousands of the marchers sleep and bath in the open. Despite assistance by ordinary Mexicans, and some help from the Mexican government, the marchers are in need of water, food, medicine and blankets. The world, especially the United Nations need to come to their aid. Some may argue that the marchers predicament, is a choice they consciously made. I will say, no! Hunger and poverty are never a choice; they are mainly imposed. As I watched them on television and video, I was conscious of the fact that almost all the marchers will not reach their destination; some will end up living in Mexico, some will return to their countries, some may even die. But that will not deter the next wave of marchers
because they want their tomorrow to be better than their yesterday. Mexico itself is highly volatile and crime-infested with hunger and violence forcing some Mexicans to make illegal crossings into America; so I foresee many of the marchers who are opting to stay in Mexico, making attempts in future to cross into America. It will be a continuous test of endurance and human will. The current state of many Latin American countries is the result of mindless American exploitation and political intervention which turned them into ‘Banana Republics’ Take for example, Honduras where the caravan took off. It has virtually been an American colony since the 1890s with the American banana companies seizing most of its fertile land and rendering the farmers destitute. Additionally, the Americans dominated the banks and mines, imposed structural adjustment while turning the country into one huge American military base. The country’s military had a free hand violating human rights and running American-backed death squads like Battalion 3-16 which physically eliminated hundreds anti-American activists. When a reformist President, Manuel Zelaya came to power in 2006 and tried to carry out changes in favour of the populace, the military kidnapped him on June 28, 2009 and exiled him to Costa Rica without their bosses in Washington calling them to order. Incumbent, President Juan Orlando Hernández is authoritarian with no respect for democratic values. He changed the electoral rules to be eligible for re-election in the November 2017 elections. When opposition politician, Salvador Nasralla was in the lead in that election, the results were suspended for 30 hours and the incumbent eventually declared winner. When people protested, they were shot at with over thirty killed
while America asked the people to accept the announced results. Guatemala where the caravan gathered strength before forcing its way to Mexico is another American Banana Republic. When a patriot, democratic President Jacobo Arbenz took 1.4 million acres of uncultivated lands mainly from the American United Fruit Company, paid compensation, and redistributed them to about 500,000 farmers (a sixth of the population) then American Secretary of State John Foster Dulles, got permission from President Dwight D. Eisenhower to overthrow the government. The coup, executed between June 18-27, 1954 was supervised by the American Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) headed by Allen Dulles, the Secretary of State’s brother. It was Code-named Operation PBSUCCESS. Subsequently, brutal military regimes and anti-people governments were imposed. Another large number of the marchers came from El Salvador, a country the Americans ran like Honduras, except in this instance, it was the showcase of American–backed killer squads including a private one. In one of its most infamous atrocities, the Atlacatl Battalion, newly trained by the US, was sent on its first mission in December 1981 to the El Mozote area. It killed over 1,200 Salvadorans including at least a hundred children. The human caravan is a reminder to America and most rich countries that centuries of dominating and exploiting other peoples, and the prevailing unfair globalization, will have to be addressed in favour of the victims. Like the International Labour Organisation (ILO) stated in its May 10, 1944 Declaration of Philadelphia: “Poverty anywhere constitutes a danger to prosperity everywhere”

Editorial Commentary The children of a lesser god
Times Guest Columwnist Chinemelu Nwokike
“We are under attack in Rann. They are shooting everywhere please pray for me; please go and tell my parents that I am in trouble. Please, look for Fatima and tell her they are taking us away. They have entered here now…” Those were the last words of Hauwa Liman before she was abducted by Boko Haram terrorists alongside other health workers on the 1st of March 2018. She had recorded the words in Hausa language and the audio clip which went viral left the masses of the Nigerian cyberspace in shock, disbelief and utter consternation. Her trembling voice pierced through our innermost parts in a visceral manner that evoked vivid imaginations of the dangers faced by many of our compatriots in the conflict infested North East region. Last week she was reportedly executed by the terrorists at the expiration of the October 15th deadline given to the Nigerian government. She is the second aid worker to be killed by the terror group in two months after her colleague Saifura Hussaini was killed on the 16th of September. The media reported it alright, there was the usual outrage on social media and the Bring Back Our Girls campaign led by Oby Ezekwesili even marched in protest to the presidential villa where they reminded the president that they were once a campaign slogan and a pledge. Ironically, the news broke a few days after President Buhari was reported to have called Leah Sharibu’s parents to reassure them of his administration’s efforts towards the safe return of their daughter. But following Hauwa’s reported execution the Minister of information Lai Mohammed only had these ‘comforting’ words: “We did everything any responsible government should do to save the aid worker. As we have been doing since these young women were abducted, we kept the line of negotiations open all through. In all the negotiations, we acted in the best interest of the women and the country as a whole”, The usual lines often regurgitated by official spokespersons to absolve the government of blame. They are just as pale as they are irritating. So much for assurance, so much for succor and hope to numerous grieving parents whose loved ones are held in captivity by these mindless killers. Sadly, that was just about it. We seem to have moved on to the next and little may be heard of Hauwa going forward. While the media is obsessed with serving us the daily sound bites from callous politicians, we are too engrossed to bother about the depraved activities of a murderous sect. Oh yes, we are approaching the elections, the campaign season is taking off, we are now in that period when every sensibility and even humanity is lost to politicking. They will regale us with tales of how the insurgents have been technically defeated. How they are now reduced to attacking soft targets but we have witnessed the deaths of Mohammed Yusuf, Momodu Baba and perhaps even Abubakar Shekau yet Boko Haram remains a threat, the scourge continues to ravage many communities in the North East albeit intermittently. As I write about 100 Chibok girls are unaccounted for, while thousands of other children including Leah Sharibu who was abducted in Dapchi are still missing. The enormity of the problem becomes even more profound considering that Hauwa wasn’t kidnapped in some nondescript region deep in the dreaded Sambisa forest. No, Hauwa was snatched in a supposedly secure military environment. The Jihadists had brazenly attacked the town of Rann which is host to a military base and the IDP camp where she worked, killing a number of soldiers and aid workers in a way that further exposed the frailty of our ill-equipped defence forces. Just put yourself in the shoes of the Liman family for a moment. You can imagine a situation where a devastated father is appealing for a ‘proof
of death’ from terrorists in order to get a last look at her angel and to bury her according to Islamic rites. The thought of such pain is the reason we cannot afford to relent, focus on the issue must be allowed to wither away under the campaigns. This is even more so for those conversant with Northern Nigeria, for we are better apprised on the magnitude of the dilemma. We can attest the vast complexity of the region, especially the poverty-stricken North East. A land where the most vulnerable members of the society are susceptible to doctrinal malleability and often used by unscrupulous politicians to achieve selfish ends. Mohammed Yusuf the late founder of Boko Haram capitalised on this canker to gather huge followership. He was so powerful that he nominated cabinet members for the Borno state government. A pointer to the ugly truth that beneath the facade of religious ideology lies a brutal and opportunistic political agenda. That is why we have so-called political leaders from the region walking along the corridors of power. Men like Ali Modu Sheriff and serving Senator Ali Ndume have at one time or the other been directly accused of sponsoring Boko Haram activities. But they are free men, they wine and dine among the most powerful in the country today and their daughters attend Ivy League schools on the other side of the Atlantic. We also have politicians like Atiku aspiring to lead the nation even when his kinsmen in Adamawa are perennially haunted by the dark shadow of terrorism. How is it possible that his interests and investments in the region are intact in the midst of all these atrocities by Boko Haram? How long shall we endure the incessant invasion our schools, and IDPs to abduct hapless women and children? When will this government bring the promised end to the devastating suicide bombings in churches, mosques, bars, parks, and markets? President Buhari has gained notoriety for his slow response to burning issues. An unfortunate and frustrating style that is eroding much of his hard-earned reputation as a strict soldier. The seeming helplessness of his administration in the face of these persistent attacks should be giving him insomnia and if it is not then it is our duty to continually remind him of his pledge “to stamp out Boko Haram and all other terrorists of whatever persuasions and bring all sponsors to justice.” He is a military general and security is supposedly his strong point, so he should know that without a deeper interrogation of the latent factors behind this madness, then bringing it to an end is only a pipe dream. No sane society will allow this to continue. No responsible government should continue to condone it because it is the primary responsibility of any government to provide for the safety and security of its citizens. And Buhari himself affirmed this in a 2013 BBC interview when he specifically blamed the previous administration for the killings in the north by positing that “insecurity generally should be blamed on the Federal Government”. Hauwa was only 24, she became a nurse at an early age and was truly dedicated to her work of assisting women in her region to bring lives into the world in their most painful and vulnerable moments. Someone tweeted that she did not deserve us, I agree but I also hope like her father that she is still alive so that she would not have lost her life in the service of an undeserving nation. There are very few in our material world today who will choose the risky path of selfless humanitarian work in a conflict zone. Those who work hard to make our world a better place must be appreciated. They cannot be the children of a lesser god.
OUR POSITION APC Govs, Oshiomhole and party supremacy
W
hen former Edo State Governor Adams Oshiomhole was elected a few months ago as the national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), not a few people expressed their fears about the future of the party, not because they doubted Oshiomhole’s leadership ability, but they were worried about his hard stance on issues and stance on keeping strictly to the rules, against politicians’ penchant to bending the rules and contravening due process. This fear is gradually coming to light, especially after the primary of the party to elect the various flag bearers for the various offices, as his hard stance in ensuring that the party rules and regulations are strictly adhered to has now pitched him against key party leaders, among them powerful governors who are now moving to ensure that he is removed from his seat. This position of the party leaders who cut across the country and are aggrieved about their inability to either pick their desired ticket for the election for themselves or for their anointed aspirants and insisting that their failure to either get the ticket for themselves or their anointed was as a result of the position of the party chairman have now put the party under threat as they have put machinery in place to give effect to their threat. One of the key opponents to Oshiomhole over his position is Ogun State Governor Ibikunle Amosun. Amosun is protesting against the outcome of the APC primaries in his state and has accused Oshiomhole of colluding with “a cabal in Lagos” to write fake results which produced Dapo Abiodun as the party’s governorship candidate for the 2019 election. He alleged the involvement of former governors Bola Tinubu (Lagos) and Segun Osoba (Ogun) in the alleged fraud, citing their silence on the matter as evidence of their consent to it. Amosun insists that there was no election in Ogun State, that those he is accusing only just went to Lagos to write all results, and that what they did is fraud. He said, “If the National Working Committee or the National Chairman said there was any election in Ogun State, it was all fraud,” he said insisting that the only primary he knows about was the one which produced his anointed aspirant, Hon Adekunle Akinlade, as governorship candidate. The governor had initially announced Akinlade as a consensus candidate before the NWC of the party insisted on conducting direct primaries. But the NWC, after the primaries declared Dapo Abiodun as governorship candidate of the party. Some stakeholders in the state had also accused Amosun of hand picking candidates to almost all the offices in the state and allocating a senatorial ticket to himself, which was not agreeable to the NWC of the party who rather insist that a proper primary must hold. Though the governor took the senatorial ticket of Senator Lanre Tejuosho, who against all odds elected to remain in the party when many other senators elected on the platform of the party jumped ship to other political parties, especially the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), naming him as one of them, it seem that the NWC have decided to allow him hold on to that ticket, but that has not placated him. Now, Amosun is insisting that Oshiomhole must vacate his seat and some women in the state loyal to him have even threatened to protest naked in Abuja in support of their governor’s position. Amosun is not alone in this mission, another governor who is determined to see the back of Oshiomhole over the party primary is Imo State Governor Rochas Okorocha. Okorocha who has had a running battle with many key members of his party, including his deputy, Prince Madumere, Senator Hope Uzodima and many others over his insistence that his son-in-law, Uche Nwosu, would succeed him in office, is now accusing Oshiomhole of being behind his failure to have his way in the state. To Okorocha, because of Oshiomhole refusal to dance to his tune, he must be removed from office.
Across the various states, the situation remains the same, many members are angry. The Director General of the Voice of Nigeria (VON), Osita Okechukwu, also recently declared on a live television interview that Osdhiomhole must be removed from office. Okechukwu also failed to get a senatorial ticket in his home state of Enugu. There is also confusion in Zamfara State where the party is under threat of not going to be able to field candidates for the various offices due to issues arising from the primary, same as Kaduna where there is also a crisis. Even though Oshiomhole had earlier in the week raised the alarm that some governors are after him and working to remove him from office, he later disowned the statement by his aides, saying that he has a good working relationship with the majority of governors within the APC fold and that he has no cause to worry. This development and the recent reaction of the APC spokesperson, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, describing those complaining about the outcome of the primary as bad losers doe not in any way help the peace building process which many believe should be the next line of action of the party after such a rancorous primary. It is our sincere belief that the APC should by now be working on its peace building process towards a full reconciliation before the 2019 elections, considering the importance of the election to its continuous survival. Party primary, which is a means to an end and not an end in itself, we believe should be a process that should unite a party and whatever the outcome should not be enough to divide a party in such a way that can threaten the seat of a national chairman. We are of the opinion that the introduction of the direct party primary by the Oshiomhole-led national leadership of the party remains the best option in picking candidates to run on the party platforms, we also believe that key stakeholders within the party must be patient and patriotic enough to help build a system that will endure rather than eager to pull it down because the outcome does not favour them.

Kwara 2019: ‘Only true reconciliation Short News Kebbi NLC directs civil servants to join would ensure APC victory’ Kehinde Akinpelu, Ilorin Hon Mashood Mustapha has stated that only true reconciliation of aggrieved aspirants, stakeholders and members within All Progressives Congress (APC), in Kwara state would help the party win elective posts come 2019. Hon. Mustapha popularly call MM disclosed this during the weekend while addressing his supporters at MM Campaign Secretariat located along Fate Road, Ilorin. He thanked thousands of his supporters who attended the meeting for their support, loyalty and prayers despite the fallout of Kwara APC governorship primary election, adding that the massive turnout shows the formidable structure he built remains intact and strong. While narrating the event that led to his illegal disqualification on the day of primary election (October 6, 2018) he said some elements within the party orchestrated it, to make their preferred candidate emerge as APC flag bearer. According to him: “We uncovered moves by some selfish elements within the party hierarchy to ensure emergence of a particular aspirant. This information prompted us to double our efforts in build to primaries and
visited all the local government in the state to solicit for APC members’ support”. “The reception we received throughout the tour was impressive and encouraging as I sell my candidacy to party members. One day to the primaries we secured endorsement of Kwara North during a meeting organized at Senator Ahmed Ahmed’s residence in presence of stakeholders from five local government areas in the state”. “I guess my detractors within the party decided to issue illegal disqualification statement on Harmony FM to stop my impeding victory at the primary election. It’s really sad and disheartening but we now know what to do in future. Nobody lose in a race like this, you only gathered more experience that will be useful for your next level” Hon. Mustapha told his group that APC National Chairman, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole has disowned the disqualification letter and pledge to issue him public apology. “Imagine; our national chairman disowned the letter. Comrade Oshiomhole has promised to issue public apology that will be circulated in different media houses across the country. He also directed new National Publicity Secretary to brief the press about the development” MM also described the meeting with President Muhammed Buhari during the week as another plot to cover-up impunity and injustice happening in Kwara APC.
“Meeting of the Stakeholders and aspirants with President Muhammadu Buhari was staged by the same elements that perpetrated the evil act during the primary election to cover their mess. The national leadership needs to reconcile aggrieved members, if we want to win 2019 general elections.” He added. The former Federal lawmaker, however, assured his teeming supporters across the 16 local governments in the state that he will protect their interest within the party and ensure that they are properly updated. Meanwhile he talked about how he was magnanimous rejected premature support for a party governorship candidate and told them frankly that MM Group is bigger than him and Abdulrahman Abdulrasaq must seek for MM group support not Mashood Mustpatha’s support only. He (Abdulrahman Abdulrasaq) is planning to visit MM Group soon to formally seek for their support ahead of 2019 general elections. He reiterated that he will not work against APC interest as we approach next general election. The meeting was attended by Mashood Mustapha Campaign Organisation; Director General, Chief Raimi Adedoyin, (Kwara South) Deputy Director General, Honourable Sabi, (Kwara North) and 16 local government coordinators and other personalities numerous to mention.

ONDOFEST 2018 will be replica of FESTAC 77 - Oshodi Adewale Momoh, Akure The Ondo State Arts and Cultural Festival (ONDOFEST) 2018 which will be held this December will no doubt surpass the globally recognised Festival of Arts and Culture (FESTAC) 77, which took place in 1977. The Chief Executive of Oshodi Arts Gallery, Seyi Oshodi stated this in a press statement made available in Akure, the Ondo State capital. According to Oshodi who is also partnering the Ondo State government on the hosting the festival, the ONDOFEST 2018 was designed to rejuvenate the dwindling interest in arts and culture among Nigerians, particularly after the FESTAC 77. “After FESTAC in 1977, we haven’t really experienced a broadbrush cultural event that rolls out an all encompassing arts form in Nigeria, arguably, various attempts are made in isolation to either showcase a particular area of culture or to commemorate an annual occasions and most cases treated with foreign costumes and Western theatrical properties; therefore leaving room for mitigating criticism concerning the construct of our cultural potential.

Short News 2023: ‘It’s Ndigbo turn to produce president’ Charles Onyekwere, Abakaliki The Buhari Support Organisation (BSO) South East Geopolitical Zone, has said that 2023 would be the turn of the South-East geopolitical zone of the country to produce the next President of Igbo extraction. The caucus of the BSO South- East met in Enugu Sunday, after exhaustive and detailed analysis of the zoning and rotation of president convention from Southern Belt to Northern Belt in 1999 to date, came to the inevitable conclusion that it is the turn of the SouthEast to produce the president. In a Communiqué signed by Hon. Stanley Ohajuruka, SE Coordinator and Barrister Godwin onwusi, Ag Secretary respectively. BSO stated that the proclamation is hinged on the truism that the rotation convention was introduced in 1999 for equity, justice, peace and unity of our dear country. According to the organisation, the rotation convention is meant to erase the fears of marginalisation of any ethnic nationality, hence implant sense of belonging to all Nigerians. “We are also witnesses on how Dr Alex Ekwueme of blessed memory was shoved aside from a party he co-founded, in order to appease the South West, and His Excellency Ogboniya Onu was also in the same manner shoved aside, hence the commencement of the rotation of president from the South West in 1999. Continue, the group said in spite the shoddy manner Ekwueme was treated at the Jos, Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) Convention and Onu at the defunct All Peoples Party(APP) convention at Kaduna, Ndigbo still went ahead to vote along the agreed rotation convention. “It is as well worthy to note that in spite of unintended consequences, the zoning convention train progressively moved North in 2007, South South in 2010 and North in 2015”.
Insecurity: IDFP urges Buhari, govs to end crisis in volatile states Mathew Dadiya, Abuja President Muhammadu Buhari and state governors have been called upon by the Interfaith Dialogue Forum (IDFP) to intervene and rein in criminal elements causing violence and killing Nigerians in various parts of the country, especially in Kaduna, Plateau, Zamfara, Taraba and Benue states. The Co-Chairmen of IDFP, Alhaji Ishaq Kunle Sani and Bishop Sunday Onuoha made the appeal while addressing the media after advocacy visits to the five states by the Forum. The Forum said, “President Muhammadu Buhari, Governor Nasir Ahmad el-Rufai and relevant security agencies to ensure quick resolution of the crisis that has engulfed Kaduna state, urging the people in Kaduna to see the current curfew as a painful necessity to combat agents of destruction and prevailing insecurity.” In its brief observation on recently concluded visits to the states, he called on state governors and critical stakeholders to hearken to the cries of citizens in order to ensure improved conditions of living for the people. While in Zamfara the forum was told that “activities of cattle rustlers and other criminals engaged in kidnapping and armed robberies remain obvious bumps to peace” the involvements of the local vigilante known as ‘Yan Sakai’ were listed as major reasons for the violent crimes ripping across the state. In Benue, the interfaith discovered that what it described as “resource struggle” between herders and farmers, while both the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and Jama’atul Nasril Islam (JNI) dismissed the crisis as being religious. Stakeholders insisted, according to the IDFP’s finding that
government must work fast to “economic empowerment through job creation was harped upon to tackle the joblessness faced by youths.” In Plateau the forum noted that clashes between farmers and herdsmen are becoming an albatross to peace efforts and called on both government and international community to intervene by enhancing security and providing financial aids to alleviate the suffering of the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs). In Taraba State, the forum further revealed, it was appalled by the worsening conditions at the IDP camps and called on government and the international community, especially donor agencies, to assist in averting the pitiable conditions of these IDPs. Kaduna State stakeholders, the IDFP identified “hypocrisy among some members of communities, actions and inactions of some religious and political leaders who are not practicing what they preach as factors responsible for the conflict.” Identifying youth restiveness caused by unemployment and mutual distrust among various groups remain a major challenge, the forum lamented that it was unfortunate “His Royal Highness, the Agom Adara, Dr Maiwada Raphael Galadima, was abducted and killed less than 48 hours after he granted audience to our team. The IDFP’s team cheated fate as Kasuwan Magani was enmeshed in an orgy of violence, less than an hour after the team interacted with critical stakeholders. The IDFP was founded in 2016 and is supported by the Vienna-based King Abdullah Bin Abdulaziz International Centre for Interreligious and Intercultural Dialogue, popularly known as KAICIID Dialogue Centre, an international organization that supports dialogue platforms and trains peace builders globally.

Don’t destroy our nation, PDP tells Buhari Short News Tunde Opalana, Abuja The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has charged President Muhammadu Buhar not to allow his personal ambition to push the nation into chaos. The PDP also cautioned the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu not to succumb to pressure to manipulate the electoral process for President Buhari as such could cause serious crisis capable of disarticulating the nation. In a statement on Sunday by its publicist, Kola Ologbondiyan, the party warned that President Buhari’s handlers, who are desperate to force him on an unwilling nation, are fast pushing the nation to the brinks and should be checked before it is too late. PDP’s fresh caution to INEC Chairman is predicated on an alleged secret meeting he held with President Buhari’s Chief of Staff, Mallam Abba Kyari, at the Presidential villa last Friday.
The party asked Prof. Yakubu to note that the polity is already tensed over INEC’s listing of President Buhari for election despite his failure to present the constitutionally required academic credentials like other candidates, stressing that this development casts a dark shadow on the credibility of INEC to conduct a transparent election. The party invited INEC “to further note that Nigerians are aware that by President Buhari’s declaration, in an affidavit, that his said certificates are with the military, his nomination documentation is therefore constitutionally incomplete, making him ineligible to contest the 2019 Presidential elections. The PDP said “by failing to write to the military authorities to release his claimed certificates, Mr. President leaves Nigerians with no option than to hold that he does not have the credentials and the 1999 Constitution (as amended) did not provide that affidavits can be used as a substitute for any candidate’s credentials. “Moreover, Mr. President’s affidavit also shows that he did not submit any certificate in 2015, making his candidacy
for that election improper and defective under our laws. “Prof. Yakubu must have noted the heavy public criticisms that have been trailing his provocative declaration that Nigerians should go to court over the certificate saga. His statement betrays an electoral umpire who is under threats and heavy pressure to abdicate his statutory duty of enforcing constitutional requirements for elections”. The party said that allowing such siege mentality on national democratic institutions to fester will surely spell doom for the nation while it advised the APC to accept its self-inflicted misfortune. “On our part, the PDP is ready for election. Our candidate, Atiku Abubakar, with his proven competencies, has met all the requirements for the election and is now enjoying the support of the overwhelming majority of Nigerians across all sections of our country. “Nigerians are tired of a deceptive, dishonest and grossly incompetent Buhari administration, which has brought so much anguish and pain to our nation”, said the party.
FG’s unpaid subsidy arrears is affecting our operations – Marketers Depot and Petroleum Products Marketers Association (DAPPMA) on Sunday said the unpaid subsidy arrears of over N650 billion by the Federal Government poses huge financial challenges to the downstream operations. DAPPMA Executive Secretary, Mr Olufemi Adewole, told newsmen in Lagos that the settlement of the debts owed them would save their assets from being taken over by banks. Adewole said the downstream segment of Nigeria’s petroleum industry was fast becoming unattractive to lending institutions owing to rising debt profiles of its players on account of unpaid subsidy arrears by government. “This is posing a huge financial challenge to oil marketers and threatening business survival,” he said. He said that 60 per cent of marketers had been forced out of business as banks had taken over their assets (depots and other investments) due to their inability to pay back funds borrowed. According to him, aside marketers that have been forced out of business, others are struggling to survive due to the government’s inability to settle the subsidy arrears.

Speaking before presenting the bank drafts to the affected traders weekend, Governor Wike stated that traders with shops got N400,000 (four hundred thousand naira) while traders who operated as attachment got N300, 000 (Three Hundred Thousand naira) each. He said: “Today, Government will compensate you, so that you can pick up your lives. We have the bank drafts because we don’t want you to be targeted by criminals. Go to the banks, open accounts and expand your businesses.” The governor charged the contractors to ensure that the market was completed within the next three months. “We have paid 60 per cent of the contract sum. So, this market must be completed in three months. We have the funds to complete the market in record time.

Reps member alleges oath taking by politicians to induce voters Henry Omunu, Abuja House of Representatives member, Rep. Israel Ajibola Famurewa (APC/Osun) has alleged that desperate politicians are inducing voters to take oath as a means of vote buying during elections. The lawmaker who said this phenomenon was rampant during the just concluded Osun state governorship election, declared that the All Progressives Congress (APC) underestimated the desperation of the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Ademola Adeleke to win the governorship election. Rep. Famurewa, who was the director - general of the campaign organisation of the Governor-elect of Osun state, Gboyega Oyetola, in a chat with journalists over the weekend warned that Nigeria’s democracy is facing its most perilous time ever with the introduction of oath taking by politicians to buy votes. He said if the trend is not checked, the nation’s democracy will be at a greater risk of losing voters’ choice which he described as the most important part of citizens franchise. “We discovered one frightening development during the just concluded
governorship election in Osun state and it’s a very sad commentary for our democracy; and it has to be checked urgently. “We realized that desperate politicians were offering cash to voters and asking them to swear to an oath before they could get the money so that they don’t take their money and vote their preferred candidate. “One surprising incident occurred in my own poling unit where I know virtually everybody. On the morning of the elections, I went out calling on my people to come and vote, but they were stepping back after seeing me, saying that they had collected money from the other candidates. “When I offered to give them the money so they could return same to those people, they said they were made to swear to an oath. I couldn’t find my voice to say anything. “And I think, poverty is responsible for that, if not, how can a family man or woman compromise his or her religious belief just to get N3000 or N5000 from somebody who claims he’s seeking office to safeguard the peoples’ interests?”, the lawmaker wondered. The lawmaker who is the APC senatorial candidate for Ijesha-North/Ijesha-East called for stringent measures by the authorities to curb the situation before the general elections in 2019 so as not to erode
the credibility of the polls. Giving reasons for the runoff, he said that the APC, though fortunate to have assembled a competent campaign team didn’t envisage the PDP manipulating the process as it did in Ede, the strong hold of its candidate. “Our concern was more on other candidates such as Otumba Iyiola Omisore of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and that of the ADP who until his defection was the secretary to the state government. “However, the PDP candidate was able to make it to the runoff against our expectations because of massive overvoting that took place in Ede. “How can a poling unit produce about 600 votes with no single case of voided vote? You will see the veracity of what I’m saying by the time the tribunal is done with its proceedings. “But preliminary audit by our team of lawyers has shown beyond reasonable doubts that there was a serious case of overvoting in Ede where Adeleke won. “How did we know this? The number of voters accredited by the card readers was far below the number of votes returned, which means that at a point, the device failed and they continued with manual accreditation which was against the INEC guidelines,” he added.
Kano State Governor, Dr Abdullahi Umar Gandje has lamented that the lives of about half a million children are threatened by health cases that are related to malnutrition. The Governor decried the health challenge culminating in the large number of stunt children which is now rampant in the state, describing the situation as disturbing and worrisome. Ganduje, while launching a dietary diversification project supported by UNICEF said, the affected children are prone to death before age of five. He affirm that the state Government is committed in the fight against stunting, calling on traditional rulers to join the campaign against the ubiquitous menace of stunt children, which is currently bedevilling the state. “Locally, we have the required food to address the issue, we only need to sensitize our people especially those in the rural areas on how to use, the available crops and legumes to achieve balance diet. “Nigeria is one of the four countries in the world, that is faced with the problems of malnutrition and Kano as the most populated state should under this circumstance account for a good number of affected children, as parents we must all of us combine forces to address the problem and ensure we overcome it.” Ganduje stated.
Traffic: Police launch joint operation in Lagos Benjamin Omoike, Lagos The Lagos State Police Command has launched a joint operation with other sister agencies to seriously tackle the upsurge in traffic gridlock on roads across the State caused by lawlessness on the part of some motorists, among other factors. Tagged Operation Restore Sanity on Lagos Roads/Operation Velvet, the police said it would henceforth impound the cars of defaulting drivers and arraign them immediately in a Mobile Court that will be attached to the joint service team to enable quick dispensation of justice to erring motorists. In a statement on Sunday by the Public Relations Officer of the State Police Command, CSP Chike Oti, the police said it had already identified the worst hit areas, while the joint operation team involving the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) had been constituted to commence enforcement activities with immediate effect. The bank’s director made this disclosure in Lokoja, the Kogi State capital at the just
concluded 26th edition of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Seminar for Finance Correspondents and Business Editors, in contributing to the topic: “Incentivizing lending to boost employment- elastic sectors of the economy.” He explained that N8 billion was disbursed to Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in 2017, while N23 billion loans were disbursed in nine months of 2018. The BoI, the executive director, noted
that as a government agency, which was established primarily to lend to businesses, had disbursed N66 billion to hundreds of SMEs in 2016. In order to boost the nation’s industrial capacity, the lender said it had secured an Afreximbank syndicated loan of $750 million, backed by the CBN, which has been deployed in deepening support for the economy. On his part, the Executive Director (Technical) Nigeria Incentive-Based Risk-

Manufacturers caution FG on signing of African Trade Agreement Mathew Dadiya, Abuja The new President of the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria, MAN, Engr Mansur Ahmed, has called for a detailed study of the potential benefits and costs of the African Continental Free Trade Agreement, AFCFTA, to Nigeria. Mr. Ahmed, on Sunday, said though MAN recognises the potential value and desirability of expanding trade and economic integration in the Continent, Nigeria should not sign any
agreement without fully comprehending its impact on the economy and wellbeing of the People. The President of MAN, made the remarks at a Meeting with the African Union Commission, AUC, Chairperson, Moussa Faki Mohamat, during his visit to Nigeria recently. “It is an open secret that, given Nigeria’s demography and rapidly growing population any initiative of far-reaching consequences on the survival of our fledging manufacturing sector and the production sector, in general, must be approached with great caution.
“At the minimum, we insist that a detailed study of the potential benefits and costs to the various sectors and sub-sectors of the economy must be undertaken” Ahmed said adequate consultations with key affected stakeholders are necessary to identify opportunities and risks that would result from implementation of the agreement, to mitigate any negative fallouts and facilitate access of potential opportunities. He noted with gratification, the approach of Government- inauguration by President Buhari, of a high-level multi-stakeholder Committee to
assess the impact and Nigeria’s readiness for the AFCFTA. Ahmed said MAN should be in a position to fully support whatever action Federal Government takes when the Committee completes its assignment and establishes Nigeria’s readiness for AFCTA within the next three months. President Muhammadu Buhari had on October 22, 2018, inaugurated a Committee for Impact and Readiness Assessment of African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) in State House, Abuja.
N31m Shoreline’s payment: NAMA restores air traffic services to Osubi airstrip Chukwuemeke Iwelunmo Following the payment of N31 million by Shoreline Oil Services Ltd, operators of the Osubi airstrip to the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency ( NAMA) as part payment of its accumulated debt, the latter has announced resumption of air traffic services at Osubi airstrip. This is just as the airspace managers said they were not responsible for “shutting down” Osubi airstrip as they do not have such statutory or physical powers as they only withdrew Air Traffic services from the airport. Following the debt profile at the airport, NAMA withdrew its Air traffic services which technically halted operations at the Warri
airport. NAMA in a statement from General Manager Public Affairs, Khalid Emele said the debt balance was N566, 422, 000.50 after the payment enjoining Shoreline Oil Services to take advantage of this window of opportunity to make additional payment that will substantially defray the above debt. His statement read, “This decision is consequent upon the payment of N31M by Shoreline Oil Services Ltd, operators of the airstrip, being part payment of accumulated charges for the provision of air traffic services at the airstrip by NAMA. The payment leaves Shoreline Oil Services with a debt balance of N566, 422, 000.50 as of today, the 28th October, 2018.”
“We recall that we took the difficult decision to withdraw air traffic services to Osubi airstrip after Shoreline Oil Services persistently refused to honour financial obligation to us despite several entreaties.” “As a responsible corporate citizen and provider of critical services to the nation’s civil aviation sector, we felt obliged to restore our services to the airstrip with the understanding that Shoreline Oil Services will take full advantage of this window of opportunity to make additional payment that will substantially defray the above N566, 422, 000.50 debt as well as agree on a concrete and workable payment plan that will clear the outstanding balance.” It is our hope that going forward, and in the spirit of the renewed understanding between
both organizations, Shoreline will reciprocate this gesture by paying for our services as and when due. “We would also like to clear the misconception being bandied about that the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) was responsible for “shutting down” Osubi airstrip. Nothing could be further from the truth as we do not have such statutory or physical powers. We merely withdrew air traffic services to the airstrip but we did not shut it down.” NAMA reassured all our service users, stakeholders, and the general public that NAMA remains committed to its goal of providing seamless air traffic services in a safe, economic and efficient manner.
Diamond Bank Plc, has announced its third-quarter 2018 results highlighting its strong focus on the Nigerian market, even as the bank’s contribution of non-interest income to profit rose by N27.32 billion from N24.66 billion recorded in 2017, representing a 10.81 per cent increase. Unaudited report released on the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) showed that the bank’s retail strategy was quite rewarding as the bank recorded a landmark figure in the value of funds disbursement of over N1 billion to small business owners under the cash flow-based SME lending scheme in partnership with the Women’s World Banking (WWB), thus earning the bank, the leading financial institution ranked among the first five SME customer bank in Nigeria in the KPMG customer service survey 2018. Despite the challenging trading environment, the bank’s contribution of non-interest income to profit increased by 10.81 per cent from N24.66 billion (Q3 2017) to N27.32 billion (Q3 2018) while Impairment charges decreased by 24.21 per cent from N33.21 billion recorded in the corresponding period of 2017 to N25.17 billion in 2018. The bank’s interest expense up 18.32 per cent to N41.26 billion year-on-year, but it has continued to decline in-line with guidance, falling by 15.36 per cent from N14.83 billion in the first quarter of 2018 to N12.56 billion and 2.89 per cent year-on-year increase in operating expense to N66.20 billion (Q3 2018). However, cost containment measures are underway with the digitization process contributing to quarter-on-quarter gains with OPEX declining 0.36 per cent from N22.07 billion (Q2 2018) to N22.15 billion (Q3 2018). Commenting on the business, Chief Executive Officer, Diamond Bank, Uzoma Dozie explained that since the global economy is currently witnessing a shift in trade relations alongside continued interest rate adjustments, there is greater volatility across markets and increasingly fragile economies. Uzoma added that the nation’s economy has not been immune to certain headwinds, so that while the economy recorded quarters of expansion, the rate of growth has weakened. He said, “our digital-led retail strategy has remained robust and through this strategy we have been able to continue scaling up by reaching a wide pool of customers both cost effectively and efficiently. As we move into the final quarter of the year, we expect headwinds to continue driven by emerging situations in developed economies as well as our domestic political realities. Despite this, our investors can expect a further decline in Non-Performing Loans (NPLs), a further increase in our digital footprint and completion of the sale of the UK subsidiary. Through these actions we remain optimistic about the medium to long term outlook of Diamond Bank and its return to strong profitability.” Customer deposit dropped by 8.0 per cent year-on year to N1,107 billion due to re-pricing and non-rollover of high priced maturing deposits, and migration to government securities while Liquidity position remains strong as current and savings account balances increased from 77.4 per cent (FY2017) to 78.08 per cent of total deposits in September 2018.

TraderMoni: Sokoto petty traders laud FG N10, 000 collateral free loans Motolani Oseni Sokoto State petty traders were full of praises and appreciation to the federal government upon receiving bank payment alert for Tradermoni in the State. The scheme aims to take financial inclusion to the grassroots so that petty trader can access collateral free credit facility to expand their businesses. They trooped out in their large numbers at the launch of the Government Enterprise and Empowerment Programme, GEEP, which took place at the two main market within the state capital, Sokoto Central Market and Sokoto Old Market.
Beneficiaries however, have six months to repay with flexible options of N85 daily or N430 weekly. A cross section of the beneficiaries could not hide their joy as they explain how the loan facility would boost their businesses. Malam Isah Shuni, a beneficiary who reside in Dange Shuni, a nearby town and sell meat at Sokoto Central Market, expressed his gratitude to the federal government for the scheme targeted at petty traders. He said, “No government in the history of Nigeria has come out with such programme to assist petty traders. “Petty traders lack access to loan and even where it is available, the processes is too cumbersome to
borrowers. This is where Tradermoni is different as, it requires no collateral, paper work or guarantor.” On his part, Salisu Mohammed said, “I have been buying onions from Aliero town, in Kebbi state and resell in Sokoto on credit and my family rely on the meagre profit I made for our survival. “With this N10, 000 Tradermoni, I will graduate from buying on credit and my business will grow. “The money will help me buy more bags of onions to sell and I will not have problem with repaying the loan”, he stated. Hajiya Hauwa Muhammad, who sell bean cake, was moved to tear, narrating her harrowing experience and how the Tradermoni will help her business.

2019: Nigerians in Diaspora back Buhari, says Atiku not credible alternative Patrick Okohue A group based in the United States of America, Nigeria Coalition for Change, has urged Nigerians to vote for the reelection of President MuhamaduBuhari in the 2019 presidential election. The group however advised the Federal Government to tame the rampant and horrendous killings in the Northern part of the country, under the guise of communal clashes in Kaduna, insurgency in the North East and alleged marauding herdsmen in Benue, describing the scenarios as constituting a huge threat to national security. The group based in Washington DC stated that with the emergence of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar as the candidate of the major opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), that it became obvious that the country has no reliable and credible alternative to President Buhari in the coming election. In a statement made available to journalists in Ado Ekiti and signed by its Coordinator, Mr. Samuel Ayodele, the group said it would be a great mistake for Nigerians to elect Atiku as the president on the premise that he played pivotal role in the running of the
economy during the eight years reign of ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo. Ayodele hinted that Atiku was at the forefront of the government that ruled the country between 1999 and 2007 and was given unfettered access to lead Nigeria as the leader of Obasanjo’s Economic team He stated that it would be an herculean task for Atiku to make any tremendous and remarkable impacts within four years he promised to superintend over Nigeria if elected President, if he could fail to accomplish the arduous task of turning Nigeria around when he had the opportunity. The group added that Nigerians would not have forgotten the odious multi million dollars corruption that allegedly characterised the Bureau of Private Enterprises(BPE) and Petroleum Development Trust Fund (PTDF) where Atiku presided as Chairman under Obasanjo, saying Nigeria won’t want a slide into such an era when pilfering of public funds was the order of the day. Ayodele said, “Though, we quite agree with the fact that Nigeria has not reached that enviable height we envisaged under President Buhari, but those of us living abroad understood the enormity of his fight against corruption. “We are feeling and enjoying the
Buhari group tackles PDP on abandoned projects Patrick Okohue The Buhari Media Organisation has dismissed claims by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on the Port Harcourt Airport project as an attempt to water down the achievements of the President Muhammadu Buhari administration. The opposition party had not only claimed credit for its completion but said the project was conceptualized and financed by the Goodluck Jonathan administration But, the BMO said in a statement by its chairman Niyi Akinsiju and secretary Cassidy Madueke in Abuja that PDP’s position was laughable. “We wondered how the party could even claim that the PDP administration financed a project that the Chinese through the China EXIM bank provided a loan of $500m to cover three other airports in Lagos, Abuja and Kano. “It is not even a surprise because here is a party that has no qualms about twisting tales to suit its false narratives “This is a project that was only
30 percent completed at the time President Buhari assumed office in May 2015,” it noted. The group also found it amusing that whenever President Buhari completes abandoned projects or those left at low level of completion, the PDP would rush to issue press statements deriding the administration’s effort. BMO noted that “If it is a ploy to deflect attention then the opposition party has only exposed itself to ridicule. “This is because the APC-led administration of President Buhari would continue to complete all projects left at various stages of completion “We are however convinced that the President would not approve the completion of the long-abandoned PDP headquarters project in the Abuja city centre.” The group also assured Nigerians that Buhari would not back down on its avowed commitment to complete all ongoing infrastructure projects within the specified time regardless of the musings of opposition figures.
dignity and respect the anti-graft war of this administration has brought to the image of our nation. In the past, we were being treated with contempt all over the world, today the rhythm has changed. “Again, since President Buhari came on board, there had never been allegation of corruption against him in the fashion of acquisition of sprawling landed properties all over the globe like other past Presidents. He has been modest and this is gradually permeating every sphere of our country. “We don’t need a descent to the
abyss of mis-governance anymore. We have had enough in the past and Nigeria must move ahead by embracing fresh ideas that will catapult the fortunes of our dear nation to an enviable stature. “Under Obasanjo/Atiku era, Nigerians were adjudged to have been badly governed via economic deprivation, looting of public funds, electoral rigging, abuse of human rights and several other social vices that held the country down and deprived it of its dignity in the comity of nations. “Now that the PDP that could have been alternative platform
had decided to allow someone who contributed to the ills of the past to emerge, available facts substantiated the fact that the present was better than the past and we advise Nigerians to back President Buhari than allowing any slide into the dark years of the past”, he advised. Ayodele urged the APC-led government to equip all security apparatuses of government and make them effective in fostering national security, to guarantee security of lives and property as well as boost investments in Nigeria.
Bamisile, ex-Ekiti Speaker lauds Fayemi’s over declaration of emergency in education sector Gbenga Sodeinde A former Speaker of the Ekiti State House of Assembly, Hon. Femi Bamisile, has lauded the new governor of the state, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, on his new education policy of free and compulsory education for all primary and secondary school students as well as the provision of 200 million naira Car and Housing loans for Teachers in the state. Bamisile, who is the All Progressives Congress (APC), House of Representatives candidate in Ekiti South Federal constituency II, said that the latest education policy of Fayemi’s administration is no doubt “a declaration of emergency on the sector” to among other things alleviate the sufferings of the masses especially parents and guardians across the state irrespective of their political backgrounds. Governor Fayemi had on Wednesday signed an Executive Order banning school heads from collecting any illegal charge as well as abrogating taxes paid under the last regime by the pupils in the state. Hon. Bamisile gave the remark in a statement made available to newsmen in Ado Ekiti. He said: “Ekiti people can now differentiate between the government of slavery, despot, propaganda, deceit and directionlessness of the former Governor Ayodele Fayose, and the new administration in just less than 10 days. “The new education policy will, no doubt, increase education enrolment in the state geometrically and also go a long way at relieving poor parents and guardians of immeasurable stress of paying school fees and other illegal charges
Fayemi at various schools through their nose,” he said. According to him, the level of commercialisation of education in the state under the last administration was “not only wicked but barbaric, uncouth and frustrating, hence abysmal low record in school enrolment under the last administration, a development that is not good for the future of the State. “Any government that could formulate a policy, making it compulsory for all pupils including those who are less than two years to be paying taxes could be best described as an enemy of the society that voted it into power. The beauty of democracy is for the government to work for the people. “But the reverse was the case under the last administration during which pupils of nursery and primary schools including those who are in private schools had to pay a tax of N1000 each into the government
coffers apart from school fees, transport fares, uniforms, books and other illegal charges among others. “Therefore, it is now crystal clear that the present administration is out to right all the wrongs perpetrated by the last administration in order to lay a good and sustainable foundation for the people of the state. “Also the pronouncement of N200 million car and housing loans for teachers across the state will serve as a morale booster for the beneficiaries and encourage them to continue to put in their best at giving the pupils and children a sound education.” The House of Representatives candidate called on people of the state to always support APC to deliver more dividends of democracy to them. He called on teachers to justify the latest government largesse by being more dedicated to their duties at all times for educational advancement in the state.

Anthony Joshua: My son lacks ‘killer instincts’
Heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua says it is unlikely his son JJ will become a boxer because he will lack the “killer instinct” his father got from a tough upbringing. Joshua, 29, was brought up on the Meriden Estate in Garston, Hertfordshire and was an angry teenager who had brushes with police including a warning after he threw an opponent by their neck onto the floor at secondary school. Looking in a more relaxed pose he and his son pose for photos in the new December issue of GQ magazine
and Anthony says: “We all have that killer instinct, but we dampen it down in life. That’s what we train for – that killer instinct. It’s what I do for a living. “I had that instinct before I ever boxed, but now I know how to handle it, control it and when to use it. “And that’s why I think maybe JJ won’t be able to box, because when you come from a less violent background, do you have that instinct? JJ has the bloodline but will he be the strongest in the pack? “That’s what people will wonder and I would wonder that too and

probably wouldn’t want him to do it.” Asked what it takes to be a boxer, Joshua adds: “As soon as I walked into the that gym for the first time I knew I wanted to give myself to boxing. “Boxing is the sport that rewards hard work, the sport that if you apply yourself, dedicate yourself, train hard, you can become one of the best in the world. “I stopped smoking, I stopped late nights, I cut out everything that didn’t help boxing. “Does taking out lots of women help boxing?”
Gernot Rohr: Our target is to win AFCON title in Cameroon
Having taken over the driver’s seat of group E in the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr said his team’s focus now is to remain unbeaten in their remaining games, and then seal their spot for the 2019 tournament holding in Cameroon. Rohr hinted that it was not just about qualification, but working hard to win the AFCON, after the Super
Eagles failed to make two back-to-back appearances. Rohr’s wards will tackle South Africa’s Bafana Bafana on November 17 in Johannesburg and thereafter host Seychelles at home. The Super Eagles currently top the group with nine points, while South Africa have seven points. “We didn’t qualify for two editions and so we must return in a big way. We are
working very hard to make sure that we get the necessary points in our next match in South Africa. “We want to make sure that we don’t lose the match just like what happened in our first match. “We know that a good result in the match will put us at ease before the visit of Seychelles in our last match at home. We want to finish top of the group.”
Fears for Leicester City’s Thai chairman after helicopter crash Leicester City’s charismatic Thai chairman was the subject of growing concerns on Sunday after a helicopter belonging to the billionaire crashed and burst into flames in the stadium carpark shortly after taking off from the club’s pitch. There was no confirmation whether London-based Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha, who frequently flies to and from Leicester’s home games by helicopter, was on board the aircraft which appeared to develop mechanical problems. The BBC’s Southeast Asia correspondent tweeted that a “source close to the family” had confirmed he was on board, but there was no word from Leicester City or from Thai officials of King Power, Vichai’s duty-free shopping empire. Images showed smoke rising from the fiery wreckage in the carpark at King Power Stadium — the scene of unbridled jubilation after Leicester’s against-all-odds Premier League title victory in 2016. Freelance photographer Ryan Brown, who was covering Saturday’s 1-1 draw with West Ham, told BBC Radio 5 Live that he saw the helicopter rise out of the stadium before it crashed. “Literally the engine stopped and I turned around, and it made a bit of a whirring
noise. It turned silent, blades started spinning and then there was a big bang,” he said. He said he saw “a huge fireball” when he ran to the scene. None of the identities of the pilot or passengers was revealed, and there was also no information about whether anyone on the ground was injured. “We are assisting Leicestershire Police and the emergency services in dealing with a major incident at King Power Stadium,” the club said in a statement. ‘Heartbreaking’ As expressions of concern poured in from around the football world, England legend Gary Lineker, a former Leicester player and host of the BBC’s Match of the Day, tweeted: “That was the most difficult @BBCMOTD I’ve ever hosted… A terrible tragedy. Heartbreaking.” Leicester footballers Jamie Vardy and Harry Maguire both tweeted praying hands emojis and West Ham defender Pablo Zabaleta, who also played in Saturday’s game, tweeted: “My thoughts and prayers are with all those involved in the helicopter accident at Leicester City.” Nualphan Lamsam or Madam Pang, an influential figure in Thai football who manages the national women’s team, sent “moral
support to Vichai and family” in a post on Facebook. Vichai bought Leicester City in 2010 and became chairman the following February, pouring millions into the team and becoming a beloved figure in the club and the city — a feat not always achieved by the Premier League’s foreign owners. “Thoughts and prayers with all — particularly owners who’ve done so much for Club and our City,” Leicester’s mayor Peter Soulsby tweeted. Sky Sports said the helicopter took off from the pitch between 1930 and 1945 GMT but developed problems shortly afterwards with its tail rotor. The local ambulance service said it was alerted at 2138 GMT. “We sent a doctor, two paramedics in ambulance cars, a crewed ambulance and our Hazardous Area Response Team, with the first resource arriving within two minutes of the call,” it tweeted. Air crash investigators were also examining the scene.
Roger Federer to face Marius Copil in Basel final World No. 93 Marius Copil will face Roger Federer in the Swiss Indoors final after he shocked Alexander Zverev in the semifinals Saturday. Copil, who entered the tournament in Switzerland as a qualifier, broke world No. 5 Zverev in the final game of the match to secure a 6-3, 6-7(6), 6-4 win, adding to his upset of Marin Cilic earlier in the week. The Romanian also fired 26 aces in two hours and
33 minutes of play as he advanced to only his second ATP Tour final. Copil will face Federer in Sunday’s final after the No. 1 seed cruised to a straight-sets win over Daniil Medvedev in the second semifinal. The world No. 1 needed just over an hour as he defeated the No. 7 seed 6-1, 6-4. Federer will be aiming to lift his ninth Basel title as he once again plays the final of his home tournament.
Uganda confirm November 20 friendly against Nigeria The Federation of Uganda Football Association (FUFA) has affirmed November 20 as international friendly date between the Super Eagles and Cranes of Uganda. The match is slated to hold at the Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba, Delta State. The match comes up three days after Nigeria’s November 17 duel with South Africa in the Confederation of Africa Football (CAF) match day five of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) to be hosted by Cameroun next year. According to the Ugandan football federation’s website, FUFA Communications Manager, Ahmed Hussein, said the match is part of the international friendlies lined up for Uganda Cranes after engaging Cape Verde in the 2019 Total Nations Cup qualifier at the Namboole Stadium. “The Uganda Cranes technical team
will make use of the FIFA International break that runs from November 12 to 20, by playing a high profile friendly with the former African Champions. Matches between these two soccer giants have always been so close since time immemorial. “A 30-man contingent will depart on November 18 for the trip to Nigeria. The foreign-based players in
the contingent will then connect to their respective clubs after the friendly. Both nations will field national A men’s teams,” Hussein stated. It will be recalled the last time Nigeria met Uganda; the Eagles suffered a shocking 0-1 defeat to the Cranes at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, Akwa Ibom S¬¬¬tate.
