Buhari redeploys 3 perm secs Mathew Dadiya, Abuja President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the redeployment of two out of the three permanent secretaries who have been at home since 2015. The Head of Civil Service of the Federation, Mrs. Winifred Oyo-Ita, disclosed this in a statement made available in Abuja on Friday. The Daily Times had exclusively reported that three permanent secretaries: Mrs. Nkechi Ejele, Mrs. Ibukun Odusote and Mrs. Fatima Bamidele, had been idle at home for three years without posting while there were no prima facie cases against them. But the President later exonerated them and directed their immediate redeployment.

Buhari added that it was wrong to punish the permanent secretaries since the allegations against them could not be substantiated. But Mrs. Fatima was said to have attained the mandatory retirement age during her prolonged stay at home. The other two permanent secretaries, Mrs. Odusote and Mrs. Ejele, have now been posted to the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment and Federal Ministry of Communication respectively. Another permanent secretary, Alhaji Abdullahi Abdulazeez Mashi, who was formerly at the Federal Ministry of Communication has also been posted to the Federal Ministry of Health. Meanwhile, Oyo-Ita has urged the permanent secretaries to complete all processes of hand over and take over before July 6, 2018.

NAFDAC destroys N3.5bn Tramadol, Codeine, fake products Angela Onwuzoo

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has destroyed banned and unregistered Tramadol,Codeine and other unwholesome products worth over N3.5billion. Speaking at the destruction site in Sagamu, Ogun State on Friday, the Director-General of NAFDAC , Prof. Moji Adeyeye, said the street value of 13 container loads of Tramadol alone that were destroyed at the exercise were worth over N1.7billion. Adeyeye said: “The products being destroyed today are made up of Tramadol, Codeine, illegally imported unwholesome sugar of different brands and counterfeit medicines. Also included are damaged and expired NAFDAC regulated products voluntarily submitted to the agency by compliants companies. “The total street value of the products being destroyed is about N3.5billion. The street value of Tramadol that is being destroyed today is estimated to be N1,708,750,000.00.” Adeyeye disclosed that the 13 containers of banned and unregistered Tramadol and Diclofenac were released to the agency for destruction by the Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) . Besides the 13 containers , Adeyeye revealed that over 33 container loads of Tramadol were still being expected to be released to the agency for destruction by NCS, adding that the destroyed products were the largest seizures in recent times. She noted that only 50mg and 100mg of Tramadol are approved for use in Nigeria, lamenting that NAFDAC’s Inspection and Enforcement activities have however, exposed a cartel that specialises in the importation of banned strengths of Tramadol ( strength above 100mg.) According to her, the banned strengths have deleterious effects on vital organs of the body including the brain. The NAFDAC boss stated that the use

of Tramadol has ruined the lives of many promising youths who could have been the future and assets of the country. To effectively tackle the menace of fake and illicit drugs in the country, Adeyeye appealed to the National Assembly to speed-up the amendment of the agency’s laws to address the dangerous trend of counterfeiting and destruction of innocent lives. Calling for a stiffer penalty for drug offenders, Adeyeye said: “ A situation where a convict is sentenced to two years in prison with an option of the maximum statutory fine of N500,000 is a nudge on the counterfeiters not even a slap.” She noted that just last week, the agency secured a conviction for one Mr. Ezeanwu Ifeanyi at the Federal High Court in Lagos with the convict sentenced to five years imprisonment for being in possession of Tramadol though with an option of N300,000 fine. “We also have one counterfeit medicines seized and confiscated from Olisameka Osefo”, she said, adding that the suspect was arraigned and subsequently convicted while the fake medicines were forfeited to the federal government for destruction. She assurded that NAFDAC would ensure that the manufacture, distribution, sale and use of medical products and food are effectively controlled to ensure that the prescribed standards of identity, safety, quality and efficacy are met. Wife of Ogun State Governor, Mrs. Olufunso Amosun, who withnessed the destruction exercise, commended NAFDAC for its effort to keep the country free of fake and counterfeit medicines, saying that its proactiveness and diligence resorted to the massive seizures. Ogun State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Babatunde Ipaiye and his Environment Counterpart, Mr. Bolaji Oyeleye commended NAFDAC while pledging the state government’s support for the agency in tackling the menace of drug abuse in the country.

Defend your anti-corruption stance, Sen Baba Ahmed challenges Buhari Tunde Opalana, Abuja A presidential aspirant on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Datti Baba Ahmed, has challenged President Muhammadu Buhari to publicly come out to defend the anti-corruption crusade of his government. According to Baba Ahmed, Buhari is not competent to say that his administration is not corrupt, neither can he exonerate himself from corruption. Dr Baba Ahmed stated this at the PDP national secretariat on Friday during the submission of his letter of intention to contest the presidency on the platform of PDP.

The PDP presidential hopeful added that he was very close to Buhari but moved back from the President when he noticed that corruption has pervaded his government. He, therefore called on Buhari to address the international community and Nigerians on the scorecard of his government in fighting corruption. As someone who knows Buhari, inside out, Baba Ahmed said the President has questions to answer on his activities in office at the helm of affairs at the Petroleum Trust Fund (PTF), and how his presidential campaigns in 2003, 2007, 2011 and 2015 were funded. He said, “ How can Buhari said he was fighting corruption

when he collected corrupt money from peoples’ salaries from the APC controlled states to fund his election and say you are fighting corruption. Two notoriously corrupt governors who bankrolled Buhari’s election were rewarded by Buhari with juicy ministerial appointments”. Dr. Baba Ahmed, the Chancellor of Baze University, Abuja also said that, “Buhari’s anti-corruption war is deceitful, he is a liar, that man is corrupt”. He therefore called on the PDP leadership to ensure a smooth, free, fair and credible primary in choosing its presidential candidate ahead of 2019, insisting that “if APC win in 2019, it is our fault. It takes only one right decision to be

made by our party”. Speaking further, Baba Ahmed said, “The APC in 2015 capitalised on our weakness and undemocratic process to come to power. APC is surviving 2015 to 2019 because we handed over. But if we get it right,we will not hear APC beyond 2019”. He also told the PDP leadership that he deserved the party’s ticket because he has age on his side, saying that he is a careful planner and diligent executioner. He promised that his government will prioritise security by accounting for every square kilometer and make every corners of the country safe, pay realistic living salary , implement mortgage arrangement for Nigerians, stabilise the naira to give confidence to investors , mitigate business risks and ensure a single digit interest rate on borrowing without infringing on banks interests. Responding, the PDP National Chairman, Prince Uche Secundus, assured Baba Ahmed that the rebranded, repositioned PDP leadership will give every aspirant equal opportunities in their aspiration in a free, fair and credible contest.

laying down. We saw them coming in from the church, shooting, we remained on the ground, they kept firing until they could hear no voice or movement and left. “On Monday morning while trying to evacuate the victims, they came back shooting again, and five people, Mangai, Livinus, Jonah, Iliya Alamba, Theresa Columbus were all killed, three Mopol are still missing and three escaped. One of the survivors, Laraba in Xland village, who spent two days hiding in the mountains before the police rescue team arrived, said the people in the village were chased with heavy gunshots as they ran for their lives. She said, “Many were gunned down while fleeing and children who couldn’t run fast were slaughtered and roasted”. Still at the IDP camp, a man who simply identified himself as Steve from Kakuruk Village in Gashish district, said the suspected herders came from the mountains shooting and burning houses on Sunday. He said: “The soldiers here were helpless as they came. They could only secure lives but all our houses including a church and a Pastor’s house were burnt down.” In Ninchi Village of Shonong community in Riyom LGA, another survivor narrated thus, “The Fulani invaded homes at about 2am on Saturday. Eight people were killed, a husband and wife were roasted in their home. Some people escaping through the bush and those fleeing to safety were shot. Some who survived with gunshot wounds are now in hospital.” The attacks, which took place in 11 villages in three local government areas – Barkin Ladi, Riyom and Jos South – also saw the razing of over 50 houses. But some residents in the areas are still pointing to the armed herdsmen bandits who have been terrorising the Middle Belt region since 2001. It is instructive to note that Governor Simon Lalong has slammed a dusk-to-dawn curfew in the affected local governments. President Muhammadu Buhari also visited to pay condolence and as usual, vowed that the Federal Government “will never rest” until the killers are brought to book. The pattern of these suspected herdsmen attacks on the North Central geo-political zone, which is regarded as its food basket, has become unsettlingly familiar. The main flashpoints are in Southern Kaduna, Plateau, Taraba, Nasarawa and Benue states. Incidentally, the bandits shift from one theatre to the other, almost at will.

Killings: FG may engage Peace Corps for mediation Indications have emerged that the Federal Government is considering the National Unity and Peace Corps, (NUPEC), (Nigerian Peace Corps in view) for official national assignment in the area of conflict resolution in Nigeria. This is in furtherance of government’s search for an enduring peaceful resolution of crises in the country, which have resulted in loss of lives and property. Presidency source that prefers anonymity had made it known on Friday that NUPEC which is a mediating corps, might be engaged by the Federal government for a full scale mediation of crises wherever any exists. “This national assignment would be handled by Peace Corps under the leadership of Dr. Chinnedu Nneji, a Chattered Mediator and Commandant - General of Peace Corps (NUPEC),” said the source. NUPEC is being considered “as a result of mediatory credentials, remarkable conflict resolution records as well as professional capability of the corps in the area of peace making and peace building in the country”, he remarked. “There is no doubt that the security situation of the country is in disarray, which requires an urgent solution as massive killings and wanton destruction of property have become the order of the day, which is inimical to the growth of our democracy as well as

development of the country. “The questionable security apparatuses of the country, at present, seem to have exhausted all their powers without achieving much success in terms of protection of citizens and their property. Everyone knows that the primary responsibilities of any responsible government is to protect its citizens from any form of attack and killings, any government which fails to meet up in the area of maintenance of security is already failed. “This might have informed the decision of the Federal government to adopt another pragmatic approach of bringing about peace in the country via the mechanism of mediation as fire - arm approach is not really yielding the expected results. This is not to create an impression that the existing security agencies as well as the army are not working, they do but use of ammunition to address crises is becoming an outdated practice. “There is no gainsaying that the collaboration of the Peace Corps (NUPEC), with other paramilitary agencies will not only strengthen the security system of the country but will also engender a perfect synergy of crime control efforts that will launch an era of peace in Nigeria to the credit of the present administration led by President Muhammad Buhari who is known as a corruption crusader and a symbol of peace in Nigeria,” the

source explained. All efforts to reach out to the Commandant - General of Peace Corps (NUPEC), Dr Chinedu Nneji did not yield absolute success, but one of the top officers of the Corps, DCN Victoria Mark corroborated the statement that NUPEC would go for such a national assignment any moment from now. She pointed out that NUPEC had been the only peace organisation in Nigeria, which had made indelible marks in the area of conflict resolution via mediating approach. She cited a few examples of such efforts of the organisational intervention in conflict resolution through mediation technique which included NUPEC’s involvement in Umuleri/ Aguleri crises, Izilo - Ezza conflict in Ebonyi state, Farmers/ herdsmen clashes in some areas in Ogun state (Odeda area to be specific) as well as Ife/Modakeke skirmishes among others. Another officer of the corps lent his voice to the new development by emphasising the enormous contributions of NUPEC in maintaining and sustaining peace in the country. Officer Danladi pointed to various peace campaign programmes privately championed by the leadership of the corps, “ such programmes include “Operation Love Your Neighbor As Yourself” launched by the Corps boss, Chinedu PhD, in 2016, “Talk the

Peace Project” launched in 2017 while a musical album containing peace lyrics in various languages was produced to make the Peace campaign far reaching besides radio and television jingles run for the purpose of peace building in the country. All these efforts have, in one way or the other, impacted positively on positive interactions of Nigerian people” he noted. It has to be stated, however, that if the federal government can inject another dose of peace effort, in this direction, to our security system in Nigeria, the country will definitely

bounce back to the terrain of peace which she was known for in the past. No country could meaningfully develop in the midst of violence and crises as we have been having such nasty experiences of violence in Nigeria right from Chief Olusegun Obasanjo government which launched the genesis of Boko Haram in Nigeria to Fulani herdsmen menace that has polarized the country into ethno religious dichotomy that has deepened our differences as a nation.

FG berates PDP over infrastructural development in S’East, S’South Tom Okpe, Abuja The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed has challenged the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), to present its scorecard of its 16 years in office in the area of infrastructural development of the South- East and South-South. The Minister who gave the challenge while inspecting ongoing construction of the Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway on Thursday also said that it’s disheartening that some politicians have made it their pastime to criticize the current administration for allegedly neglecting the two regions without any verifiable proof. “I’m particularly glad that we came on this trip for two reasons. I think it has given the lie to those naysayers who have painted the administration as having done nothing for the SouthEast and the South-South.

“When we were coming on this third stretch of the road, I was informed that until this administration came, an entire lane was completely impassable after it was turned to a refuse dump. Now the question is: In 16 years, what did the PDP do on the Enugu-Port Harcourt Road”, he queried. ‘’Everything that we saw along the Enugu-Port Harcourt road today is what this administration has achieved, yet some politicians are so fraudulent. They sit in Abuja and accuse the administration of doing nothing for the South-East and the South-South”, he said. Alhaji Mohammed said the intervention of the present administration in the provision of infrastructure in the South-East, in particular, has exposed the PDP for deceiving the people of the region for the 16 years it was in power without anything to show. ‘’From what you have seen yesterday and today, you will see that this administration has done so much

for this zone. We can now see that some people are just misinforming the public. I am glad that from the feedback we are getting, the people in the South-East know what is going on because they know what was going on for 16 years and are also here in the last three years and they have seen the difference”. The Minister gave the assurance that the federal government will remain focused on completing inherited projects across the country adding; “The most important thing is that this government has been faithful, sincere, passionate and committed towards infrastructural development. What we are doing has never been done in almost 16 to 20 years at least along this axis”. The Minister, who is currently on a nationwide media tour of federal government infrastructural projects, had earlier inspected ongoing work at the Second Niger Bridge, where he expressed satisfaction with the pace of work.

Nyako to supporters: We might part ways with APC Tom Garba, Yola Former Governor of Adamawa state, Admiral Murtala Nyako on Thursday in Yola told his supporters that they would be forced to part ways with the APC if the National leadership of the party does not reverse the injustices and impunity being committed in the party. He stated that it was the height of impunity to deprive party supporters of their right to choose their own leaders. He said it was unfortunate that a party he was a foundation member and

a major stakeholder would deny him voting rights in his polling units. Nyako was addressing a protest rally organised by former Governor Murtala Nyako’s camp over the recent party congresses in the state. The Party faithful and other stakeholders in their thousands converged at the private residence of former Governor Nyako Thursday in Yola chanting protest political rhythms registering their dissatisfaction and dismay over the way the Governor Muhammad Jibrilla Bindow’s administration and party leadership allegedly treated them. Delivering a speech, factional chairman of the party, Mr. Dimas Ezra

alleged that the government in the state has betrayed their confidence in the political schemes ranging from appointments, congresses and many other issues. Represented by the national chairman of Buhari/Osibanjo Again (BOA), Alhaji Yahaya Hamman Julde said immediately after the 2015 Elections things began to fail apart in the party and Government as injustices and impunity became the order of the day. Hamma Julde explained that they unanimously agreed to consult Governor Nyako as the political head of the group for way out of the quagmire if the situation cannot be addressed.

The Federal Government’s effort at reversing youths’ unemployment has received a boost, as the federal ministry of labour and employment in partnership with the African Development Bank (AfDB), has commenced work on Youth Employment and Skills Development in Nigeria, Public-Private Roundtable. Addressing a team of experts from AfDB, led by Rosemond Offei Awuke, Chief Development Economist, Human Capital Youth and Skills Development in his office recently, the Minister of Labour and Employment, Sen. Chris Ngige affirmed that the problem of youth unemployment is very serious in Nigeria and other Africa countries. Dr. Ngige in a press statement noted that “youths constitute a larger proportion of Nigeria’s Population; the pertinent question, therefore, is how many of these youths are fully employed, underemployed and unemployed? Alarmingly, the majority of Nigerian youths are in the underemployed and unemployed categories.” Ngige emphasised that the Public-Private Sector roundtable is very important to identify the factors responsible for high youth unemployment and make recommendations that would address the daunting challenges associated with it, as well as seek to implement most of the recommendations with a view to reverse the ugly trend of rising youth unemployment in Nigeria. According to the statement, the Minister assured the AfDB team that the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari is not relenting in its efforts at creating the much needed decent jobs for Nigeria youths, adding that the quantum of jobs being created through various intervention programmes such, as the Npower further contribute to the gains. “We assure you that the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari is committed to all efforts aimed at job creation for the teeming unemployed Nigerian youths. I have no doubt that from this roundtable meaningful solutions will be provided on youth employment.” The Minister enthused.

Plateau indigenes in Rivers blame killings on security agencies Amaka Agbu, Port Harcourt Plateau state indigenes living in Port Harcourt has blamed security operatives charged with the responsibility of protecting the state for the continued killings. Going under the aegis of Plateau Indigenes and Cultural Association, in Rivers State, the spokesman of the group, Peter Danladi, said that the federal government was not doing enough to curb the killings in Plateau State. Danladi who spoke to newsmen in Port Harcourt said: “I want to express our dissatisfaction with the security operatives because

I cannot imagine an incident of that nature on a daily basis and no information, surveillance; nothing was done to fish out the perpetrators of this evil and prosecute them. “There’s also no information that the security agents are looking for a number of people in connection with the killings. It is a matter that has never been taken seriously and we want to call on the federal government and the security agencies to look inwards because this is going to affect a lot of economic activities, not to talk of peace in the state,” he continued. The group’s spokesman also said that indigenes of Plateau State were then fleeing their homes for fear of reprisal attacks.

According to him, “Right now, we are not sure of security,” alleging that “Information reaching us said the security operatives guarding those environments withdrew and disappeared all of a sudden. That means that the people are not sure of their security. “If they go back to those areas, how are they sure that they were going to continue with their businesses and that there will be normalcy? Everybody is traumatised and they are fleeing into different homes and environments. Look at the economic implications. We have become refugees in our own state,” he concluded. Meanwhile, reacting to what he described as unwarranted attacks

on unarmed communities by suspected Fulani herdsmen, Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, called for the immediate re-jigging of the nation’s security architecture. Speaking when he received the Management of Businessday Newspaper at the Government House Port Harcourt on Thursday, Governor Wike said that the current approach to national security was no longer functional. He alleged: “This time, criminality is targeted at some communities. Every time when they kill over a 100 innocent Nigerians, the security agencies claim that 3 persons have been arrested. “After the deaths, they announce that Special Forces have been

deployed to invaded communities. Will the Special Forces revive the slain persons? “We must talk of re-jigging the security architecture. The present setting is not yielding results. We must introduce persons with new ideas and new thinking to check the ugly trend of insecurity,” the governor opined. Governor Wike regretted that most of his colleagues (governors) were not interested in working for the people as they were more concerned with battling for second term. According him, some governors rather than stand for the people in terms of the growing insecurity, prefer to hobnob with the President, begging for second term support.

Buhari’s inaction responsible for FAAC deadlock - PDP Tunde Opalana, Abuja The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has blamed the deadlock at the Federation Accounts and Allocation Committee (FAAC), meeting for which workers may not get their June salaries on time to President Muhammadu Buhari’s handling of events in the country. The party noted that the entire problem at FAAC stems from the fact that President Buhari abdicated his duties and opened the door for heavy sleazes and looting of funds in the oil and gas sector by his cronies and cabal in the Presidency. PDP National Publicity Secretary, Kola Olobondiyan in a statement on Friday said it is incontrovertible that government’s major financial earning figures could not tally at the meeting because of the sleazes in Buhari’s administration that have been left unchecked.

It said that the Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun, by asking the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) to account for the missing money, is merely seeking for a scapegoat, as the buck stops at President Buhari’s table as the Minister of Petroleum Resources. “Mr. President appropriated the office of the minister of petroleum and refused all wise counsel to quit the office for a more competent hand. He therefore cannot attempt to shift blames to others where he had overtly failed. “Nigerians will recall that the PDP had forewarned of stealing, sharp practices and sleazy subsidy deals going on in the Buhari-led petroleum sector which the Presidency had always swept under the carpet. Today, the truth lies bare for all to see. ‘Our take as a party is that Nigerian workers must not be made to further suffer because of President Buhari’s manifest incompetence and the humongous corruption going on in the petroleum sector under his supervision”, he said.

Secretary and Nabob Ogbonna of the Daily Trust newspaper as Auditor. The elected officials, who had served first term of three years, were all returned unopposed. The Chairman, Jacob Ogodo, who spoke on behalf of the newly elected executives, thanked members of the Chapel for reelecting all of them, describing it as a show of trust and pledged not to disappoint them. He assured that the executives would fully collaborate with members in order to move the Chapel forward. “One thing I wish to assure you is that the EXCO will always consult members of the Chapel before taking any decision”, he said.

Lagos tanker fire: NLC tasks FG on drivers’ conduct Idu Jude, Abuja The Nigeria Labour congress (NLC), has called on the Federal Government to take measures to prevent further unnecessary carnage on the country’s roads. This was contained in a press statement issued Friday by the President of NLC, Comrade Ayuba Waba, condemning Lagos commercial drivers’ altitude on the roads. Reacting to Thursday’s tanker fire incident at popular Otedola bridge, in Lagos, the NLC President, decried the magnitude of lives and property lost, describing it as unfortunate. The statement reads: “We express our heart-felt condolences to the victims and families of the deceased. Early reports say that the accident was caused by a bus that rammed into a stationary petrol

tanker igniting fire and causing an explosion. We hold the view that it was an avoidable accident, given the circumstances”. Comrade Waba, however, called for higher driver-education and more strict enforcement of traffic rules and regulations, especially with regard to parking of vehicles that are inflammables. The organised labour, he said noted with concern, the reckless culture of driving in Lagos in spite of the great effort by the state government to ensure a culture of sanity on the roads, stressing that if these were observed, the people would not have been thrown into this level of grief or mourning. “Once again, our hearts go to the victims and their families. We similarly urge the Lagos State Government not to relent in ensuring that utmost discipline is maintained not only on its roads but on all our roads,” said the statement.

Tanimu Turaki carpets Buhari over Plateau killings

A former Minister of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs, Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, SAN, has said that President Muhammadu Buhari has failed in meeting up with his obligations to the people of the country. Turaki who spoke while delivering a 22-page lecture titled ‘Security and Unity for Greater Prosperity,’ in Abuja lamented that Nigerians have become more vulnerable as far as the security of their lives and property was concerned. He said, “From whatever angle or perspective one approaches this question, it becomes crystal clear that this government has failed in meeting up with its obligations to the people of this country as directed and mandated by our

g9 constitution. “We have seen how a tiny issue of insecurity bedeviling the three frontline states in the North-East, had snowballed into a national disaster. “There is now the issue of clashes between herdsmen and farmers, resulting in the death of hundreds of people, almost on a daily basis, in Benue, Nasarawa, Plateau, Kogi, Adamawa, Taraba and some areas in the South East and South West geo-political zones. The former Minister added that, “The citizenry have seen how government has clearly displayed either lack of interest or more correctly, lack of capacity and Continued on page 10

2018 Budget: Niger Delta militants threaten to blow up property of Senators, Reps Stories: Patrick Okohue Irked by recent revelations by President Muhammadu Buhari that members of the National Assembly cut down on funds allocated to key infrastructural projects for the Niger Delta in the 2018 budget, some militants from the region have threatened to blow up properties belonging to National Assembly members from the oil-rich region. The militants who issued the threat while faulting the action of their representatives in a meeting held at Egbema, Delta State, declared National Assembly members as “enemies of the region” for irresponsibly consenting

to the reduction of funds allocated for infrastructural projects in the current budget. A statement by the leader of Reformed Niger Delta Avengers (RNDA), self-styled ‘General’ Johnmark Ezonebi, branded the action of the lawmakers from the region as “ineptitude, foolishness, non-committed approach and dumbness.” The statement reads in part, “The RNDA has declared all National Assembly members from the Niger Delta region as the true enemies of the development of the region and would deal decisively with them while their properties scattered across the Niger Delta region will receive a dose of our ravaging dynamites. “We note that the National Assembly

members have not been able to attract projects but would sit down and fold their hands in the Green and Red chambers and superintend over reduction of funding for key projects attracted to the development of the long-neglected region by others. “It is shameful and abysmal failure on the part of our legislators in the National Assembly to sit down and endorse this injustice done to the people of the region when the President had already allocated funds for such projects with direct positive impact on the people. “It is totally unacceptable in this era as it will no longer be condoned for our elected representatives to pursue their personal interest to the detriment of the region’s

development as was clearly displayed by former President Goodluck Jonathan in his epileptic six years reign, while under his blind watch, allowed some of his ministers and cohorts to milk the wealth of the region dry without contributing any single project to the region. “We were totally taken aback over the reduction of funds allocated to the Nigerian Maritime University, Okerenko. This was one project that we sacrificed our lives in the creek to fight for, the second Niger bridge, the East- West road that cuts across all the Niger Delta states, which former President Jonathan and his PDP government could not complete, among other critical projects by the National Assembly.”

Talk about being Atiku’s running mate for 2019 is speculative – Peter Obi Stories: Patrick Okohue Former Anambra State governor of, Mr. Peter Obi has denied reports making the rounds in some quarters that he will be the running mate to former Vice-President, Atiku Abubakar. Atiku Abubakar is an aspirant of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2019 presidential election. In a statement, media aide to Peter Obi, Valentine Obienyem, described the report making the rounds as mere speculation. “When I read the news in the papers and on social

media, knowing full well that no presidential candidate has discussed such issue with him otherwise I should have known. When I saw the news, I exclaimed, ‘Who is the author of this mischief? “I immediately brought the news to the attention of my boss who is rounding off his speaking engagements in U.K. and the USA and he was equally surprised that such speculation should be on at this time, when the pre-occupation of all Nigerians should be how to end the killings in parts of the country and return the country back to sanity,” he said. Obienyem added that the PDP at the moment was preoccupied with rebranding and producing a formidable flag bearer, not who would be running mate.

Get your PVC to vote out APC in 2019, Abaribe tells Nigerians The Senator representing Abia South Senatorial District, Enyinaya Abaribe has tasked Nigerians of voting age to get their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) to vote out the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led government in the 2019 general elections. The lawmaker who was at the national secretariat of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to thank the national leadership for identifying with him during his recent arrest by operatives of the Directorate of State Services (DSS) described his incarceration as a product of “dirty politics”, adding that even the security agents knew why they were ordered to pick him up. “Where we are today in Nigeria, I can only make one recommendation to Nigerians. And that recommendation is: get your PVCs ready, because we have to vote out this government. “There is no other way we can do it because as you can see, this government is descending into tyranny. When I was arrested and taken to my house for it to be searched; in the warrant of arrest for the search, what they said was that I was a sponsor of terrorism. And I wanted to know subsequently how I would sponsor terrorism and they put there in bracket that I was aiding and sponsoring a proscribed organisation, the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). “Everybody in Nigeria knows that I signed the bail bond for Nnamdi Kanu of IPOB. And if signing the bail bond means that I’m now a sponsor of IPOB, what it means also is that every Nigerian should be ready. For every little thing, they will find a reason to hold you because this government has lost the confidence of the people. “And all that they are doing now is nothing but intimidation and trying to make sure that strong voices and voices who are saying that enough is enough, will be silenced. “I want to specially thank members of the National Working Committee led by our great chairman for the great show of support by my party when I was undergoing the ordeal of dirty politics,” he said. On whether the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is capable of delivering credible polls in 2019, Abaribe waxed philosophical, stressing that “the present INEC as it is constituted are also people on the brink of history. What they do and what they don’t do will have an effect on whether we have a country or not. “I believe that when people are challenged and confronted historically at defining moments for the nation like we have today, they will rise up to expectation.”

With your supposed love tangle with fellow housemate ‘Anto’ what is the status of your relationship with her? Anto and I remain really good friends, we support each other through our hustles and pursuit of success, As I have said before, we are both firmly focused on making the best of the opportunity that we have now through the platform that Big Brother Naija has provided us. She is a very mentally attractive person and if the status of our friendship changes into something more, we will make that known one way or another. You once made a post on social media that you are currently single, does that mean that there is no possibility of a relationship with ‘Anto’? I have learnt to never say never so there is always a possibility. At this time though since I am not in a relationship, I am single (smiles) Months after Big Brother Naija, what have you been up to? I have quietly but concertedly worked on building a brand, one that would suffice and stand the test of time. I have had some really interesting meetings at home and abroad since I left house and I am feeling very positive about all that is the offing. I recently premiered my YouTube series titled “Chronicles of Lolu” which is aimed at addressing a potpourri of issues, be it social, personal growth, entertainment etc. I hope this resonates across board. I am also working on partnering with some international bodies to help improve the state of every African youth through skill development, education and putting them in positions that expose them to brilliant opportunities. Also, I am in talks with a few corporate that I can’t mention but things are looking quite positive and I’ll share more as soon as I can on this. In the future, I will want to return to school as well. You have been involved in several youth empowerment programme since you left the house, how has it been? It has been eye opening and I am very honoured to have been able to do the little I can. Nigeria and indeed our continent is blessed beyond what we can truly wrap our heads around, we have no business being where we are now. It is indeed the right thing to do to teach and empower the youth so that they know the value that they hold and the value of what we have as a nation. Through this we can now fully harness all that is within and put ourselves through investing in the youth, on a path of success tomorrow. Investing in today to secure tomorrow. You hinted that come 2019 you will be fully involved in politics, how prepared are you for that? Being on BBN has given me a platform and a voice that said, I am aware that this comes with a certain level of clout, one that is good enough to be appointed as an adviser but not large enough to run for an elected post. Naturally, the goal is to be able to run for an elected post in the future but at this time, I will be more than happy to take up advisory role in government either in the media, information dissemination or youth related matters. In whatever capacity I am called upon to serve, I am sure to give my all. You participated at the 2018 edition of the Big Brother Naija show; what prompted your decision to do so? I have always seen myself as a brand; I have through the years worked in different sectors and garnered as much experience as I could. Heading into the show all I needed to do was sell me enough to attract the right people and opportunities in my quest for resounding success. I felt that the show would add something I long craved, exposure. It is of no use being this or that without being shown to the world and achieving the best with whatever you have or are. While some of the BBN contestants have delved into acting, will you be considering that anytime soon? During my time in the house, a few of the tasks made me act, since then I have heard a lot of people say I should consider roles in acting. I am and willing to take on a few roles. This would be largely based on the script and the director. I look forward to hearing from Nigeria’s biggest and finest in the movie sector.

I have a crush on Genevieve, Rita Dominic - Lolu Shomuyiwa, ex-BBN housemate For Omololu Adetokunbo Shomuyiwa, 2018 former housemate of the popular Big Brother Naija show, life journey has not been rosy from the beginning but determination has got him this far. His road to success started at a tender age. Under his mother’s tutelage, Lolu voraciously learnt and read books while others had toys and played video games. A graduate of Sociology with minors in Politics and Business from the University of Ilorin, months after the BBN show, Lolu has embarked on a couple of youthful trips and recently launched his YouTube channel ‘ Chronicles of Lolu’ which is aimed at addressing a potpourri of issues, be it social, personal growth, entertainment. In this chat with MUTIAT ALLI, Lolu opens up on life after the BBN reality show, growing up, interest in politics, and celebrity crush amongst others. Enjoy… So how have you been enjoying your new celebrity status? (Smiles) I think fame should only improve your life and not change your person or ideas. I am still the same person before BBN; people just know my face more. It is nice to hear people say nice things and not so nice things. I think I have a long way to go to be considered celebrity; I am just a young man trying to be successful. What has been a celebrity deprived you of since BBN? SLEEP! There is so much to do and achieve, I find myself sleeping a lot less, I imagine that I would I might need to take some time off very soon. What did you do differently at the BBN house to stay that long?

I would not say that I did in particular; I would say that I just took each day as it came at me, thinking about today, today. I also stayed true to my beliefs and person all the way. There was no need trying to be someone or something else when being myself was what got me through the auditions in the first place. As a first timer in the competition; did your experience match your expectation? I have always been a big fan of the Big Brother Franchise and as such I knew that no matter how intelligent or forward thinking one is, Big Brother is always one step ahead and your expectations will always be exceeded. This was the same in my case; every day was an experience, something I’ll forever remain grateful for.

Davido, Wizkid making the way for us – Evih On-the-rise singer Evans Ambakederemo better know by his stage name Evih is elated to be a part of the Nigerian music Industry and is certain that it can grow bigger, while applauding some artistes for taking responsibility and making impacts. “The industry is going viral. Everyone wants to be in the Nigerian market musically. Everyone wants to feature in it. Shout out to Davido, Wizkid, Tiwa Savage and others who have made huge impact. We will build on the legacy they have set. The Business Administration undergraduate of the University of Benin also expressed his thoughts on the pros and cons of the fast growing Industry. He believes that up and coming artistes should be recognized and also given a chance to excel in Africa’s biggest music industry. According to him, newcomers are entitled to be brand ambassadors as this opportunity should not be restricted to just the big players in the game. Touching on his challenges as

an artiste he said, “The major challenge is lack of support. In other climes, upcoming acts are given opportunities to showcase themselves. You see the established acts featuring upcoming ones in their songs. There’s room for

everyone to excel. I believe if we get to support one another, it will bring about a turnaround in the music industry. Take the issue of endorsements for instance; they mostly go to the big acts. There’s no room for the upcoming ones, I feel they should be recognized as well.” Evih is no doubt poised for greatness as he reveals that his music which he describes as soul, hip pop et al is worthy of a spot on the top three chart. Answering the question of what makes him unique he said, “When you listen to an artiste’s song, you can tell if the artiste is going to be a onetime hit-maker or an all-rounder. I don’t want to be boastful but my songs are awesome. Most times I just put out songs without really promoting them. If we decide to release each of them as singles, I will probably be on the top three.” With his latest single ‘Santiago Milano’ enjoying massive airplay, Evih’s journey of four years in the highly competitive industry has been fruitful and rewarding.

Why I featured Mayorkun in Fall in Love - Tclassic These are happy times for fast rising Nigerian music sensation as is new song, Fall in Love, which was released less than two weeks back, has become the talk of the town as it also went up to top many music charts across the country on Friday. The former member of the Nigeria Federal House of Representatives was rewarded handsomely with Senior Special Assistant on Foreign Affairs and the Diaspora after her party won the federal seat. Abike is not new when it comes to handling the affairs of the diaspora. Oyetunji ordered the finance department of Continental Reinsurance Company to give a personal loan an unsecured one at that, in the sum of N12million to his friend and proprietor of the Ember Creek Night Club Mr Abbey Ford. The loan was not repaid, rather expected, it was written off.’’ a close source divulged. Reason Temitope, Olujuwon Obasanjo’s marriage collapse Isaac Oguntoye, Lagos When Temitope Adebutu , daughter of billionaire businessman ,Kessignton Adebutu, was tying the knots with former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s son ,Olujonwo, exactly a year ago in a lavish wedding ceremony, nobody envisaged that they would turn enemies in just a year. It is no longer news that a few months after the solemnization the marriage, the former lovebirds have gone their separate ways, calling for each other’s heads. It was gathered that the fight has taken a new dimension, as the estranged husband has taken the wife to court seeking divorce. While real reason the multimillion naira wedding did not last long. Olujonwo is said to have dragged Temitope before the Ogun State Judicial Service Commission and the Magistrate Court in Lagos Island over allegations of domestic violence against him. Olujuwon, who alleged that Temitope subjected him to repeated acts of domestic violence, added that she also threatened to kill him. It will be recalled that Olujonwo’s mother, Taiwo Obasanjo, made a fuss about the wedding last year when she

went to court to try to stop it. She had claimed that she received a spiritual warning against her son having a big wedding and that if he wanted to throw an elaborate wedding at all, it must be done after his 34th birthday in June. Despite her pleas and objection, Olujonwo and Tope, with the full support of their fathers, had a flamboyant wedding in May 2017. Following the recent development, the Adebutu family has risen in defense of their daughter, accusing their son-in-law of being economical with the truth. ‘Temitope is a gentle lady with proper upbringing. She has never hurt a fly all her life. The man is just looking for a way to tarnish her hard-earned image,’’ a source said. Reacting to the development, another source described Olujuwon as an ingrate that bit the hands that fed him, adding that “Junwo Obasanjo must have forgotten to tell the court that he married Tope Adebutu for material gains. “Before the wedding in 2017, he got a contract from Tope’s brother, Segun Adebutu, who is the CEO of Petrolex Oil and Gas. He was awarded the contract and was paid N35 million. But he didn’t execute the contract or refund the money. “Mr Segun Adebutu did that to help Junwo who was living in his father’s house before and after the marriage.

He lived in one of the apartments at the OBJ’s hilltop estate in Abeokuta. “If Tope was living just a stone throw from Baba Obasanjo’s apartment at the Hilltop mansion, then, how could she have assaulted her husband without his father getting to know? “Aside the fact that Juwon didn’t have enough money to maintain his home and wife, the marriage suffered constant interferences from his mum, Taiwo Obasanjo, who didn’t like her son’s choice of wife. “At some point in the marriage, after he had abandoned his home, he sent a separation letter to his estranged wife, asking for a separation and promising that they remain friends.” Also in a counter affidavit sworn by the lady and made available to us, she stated that trouble began to rear it ugly head right immediately after the wedding when he began to treat her with belligerence, cruelty, reprehensible and un warranted hostility. It was stated that this treatment continued to negatively affect their marriage to the extent that he allegedly left her to travel to the principality of Monaco alone on 17th of June, 2017 for their honeymoon only to come five days later. According to the affidavit, she alleged that she was subjected to the trauma and discomfort of living in his bedroom at his father’s house with the promise that their matrimonial home was undergoing renovation and refurbishment, amazedly, they are yet to move in. She also stated that her husband did not stay in the marriage is because of his repulsive attitude towards her. ‘’ During the marriage few times we spent together he was fond of calling me unprintable names including but not limited to ugly, fat, smelly, cancer. He always used to torment me with expressions such as ‘ I married you out of convenience’ our wedding was a sham, if I didn’t marry you no one else would’’ It was further stated that she endured this trauma till March this year when the young Obasanjo approached her after allegedly deserting him for over four months and informed her that he was no longer interested in the marriage.

Barryshokey bounces back Blessed with the awe and suave of a gentle man, laced with a sonorous voice like that of a Nightingale, Balogun Adewale Akanji, with the sobriquet Barryshokey, is not a rookie in the entertainment scene, most especially, the fuji genre of music. His astronomic rise in the Fuji music genre, is not in anyway related to him riding on the popularity of his late father, who is the creator of the Fuji genre of music, Late Alhaji Ayinde Barrister; Barryshokey is indeed a dexterous born artiste blessed with the Midas touch of Gold. While he was in Nigeria, He attended Victory Nursery & Primary Ojota, Lagos, and proceeded to A-Z International School, Ajao Estate. Thereafter, he proceeded to Gideon International School before travelling to reside in United State of America. At a point where many of his peers were busy spending the stupendous wealth of their father, Barryshokey found solace in music. He choose to tread on the path his father followed. He carved a niche for himself, notching over 8 album to his credit which sold platinum on it release date. However, He was one of the first Fuji artiste who infused Fuji music into Hip Hop Music in year 2002, under Kenny Music. He was rewarded for his sheer dint of hard work with a nomination

at the prestigious KORA AWARD held in South Africa. Even in the face of sheer criticism, Barry remained dogged and stayed through to his dreams which finally payed off for him with a wide fan base both in Nigeria and other European countries. It was gathered from a close source that; ‘’Barryshokey is returning back to Nigeria with more fire power. Nobody does his style of Fuji music. The lacuna he left while he was away is yet to be filled up, he is returning to fill it up. Trust me, this time around, he is ready to marvel all his fans in Nigeria with more hit songs. Barry on his return, will be doing some gigs and other special appearance. He has been booked for events till December 2018. He will drop a smashing yet-to-be titled track this September for his teeming fans. Trust me you have never head this combination and rhythm before.’’

Addressing team of experts from AfDB, led by Rosemond Offei Awuke, Chief Development Economist, Human Capital Youth and Skills Development in his office recently, the Minister of Labour and Employment, Sen. Chris

Ngige affirmed that the problem of youth unemployment is very serious in Nigeria and other Africa countries. Dr. Ngige in a press statement noted that “the youths constitute a larger proportion of Nigeria’s Population; the pertinent question, therefore, is how many of these youths are fully employed, underemployed and unemployed? Alarmingly, the majority of Nigerian youths are in the underemployed and unemployed categories.” He emphasised that the Public-Private Sector roundtable is very important to identify the factors responsible for high youth unemployment and make recommendations that would address the daunting challenges associated with it, as well as seek to implement most of the recommendations with a view to

While unveiling the NEFF 2017 annual report, entitled “Tightening the Belt of e-fraud Prevention: A 4 sided approach,” Adelabu, noted that in an environment that has witnessed fast-paced growth in both volume and value of electronic transactions, it would not be out of the ordinary if fraud attempts are also on the increase. Adelabu who was represented by Mrs. Tokunbo Martins, Director of other Financial Institutions Department

of the CBN added that a true test of resilience security and strength of a payments system is where losses were minimized, and measures taken to learn from those losses to forestall a recurrence. According to him, in the last six years of the forum existence, NEFF has consistently acted as a catalyst in the formulation of cohesive and effective fraud and risk management strategies. He said the forum has contributed to a year on year reduction in actual losses from e-fraud as reported by the Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System Plc (NIBBS), which accounted for the 25.71 percent in actual loss value in 2017 when compared to actual loss figures for 2016. In her contribution, Mrs. Christabel Onyejekwe, Executive Director, Technology & Operations, NIBBS, said the organization has been adding value to the eco-system through the deployment of electronic banking and formulation of measures to monitor fraud.

Brand and Marketing 16

Daily Times Nigeria Saturday, June 30, 2018

Why big budget may not win consumer’s mind – Expert Stories by Godwin Winning the consumer’s mind most often does not require big spending, but simply understanding consumers’ core fears and expectations, a specialist in marketing, culture and communication Victor Ikem, has said. Ikem, made this known recently while analysing Donald Trump’s victory and lessons in consumer marketing in Lagos disclosed that it is only by offering solutions to those fears that consumers can navigate to a brand. According to him, pretending that those fears don’t exist only makes it worse. The Democratic Party in America spent so much money in prime time ads assuring the American voters that their fears don’t exist. For him, “understanding and addressing the consumer pain points is key to brand success. Adding,Trump understood the pain points of the electorates and engaged strongly on it. His opponent felt that he was exaggerating those fears which indeed were the case but to his advantage. Consumers always navigate towards brands that say to them ‘we understand your pains, but we are sure capable of solving them’. Whatever keeps the consumer awake at night are the same driving forces that lead to their choices, not the willingness to make purchase or just spend money. In this case, it is not just the desire to vote but believe that by voting, those hidden and existing fears would be mitigated as an outcome of preferred choice.” According to him, “staying on message and keeping on it is also key selling a brand. Trump was repeatedly criticized for saying awful things and he indeed said many awful things, but he kept on the message of making America

Great Again. Even with counter rhetoric like “America is already a great nation” Trump kept on his Make America Great Again message throughout his campaign. He stayed on the message and that worked. For most consumers, staying on the message is very important. His tone of voice, though awkward, resonated with the kind people he was focused on.” “Brand handlers must how to talk to consumers more than they talk to their organization. If there is anything that matters, it is conversation with customers. As customers’ needs vary every day and hour so should be the

willingness of marketers to engage and understand what customers are thinking. In most of his campaign speeches, Trump always referred to his conversation with individuals who told him about their fears and he built his case and message around those conversations and those fears. For brands to succeed, managers must seek out that hidden fear and desire of consumers through formal and informal conversations, through focus groups and many other ways, especially informal”, he noted. He pointed out that “in the age of social media, consumers always want to hear from the horse’s mouth. Trump used twitter and Facebook

to such a level that it became a major campaign talking point for his opponent. But, he succeeded in providing personalized messages, to the right contact with the right content, even at the wrong time – 3 am.” Donald Trump’s campaign message was focused on restricting migration and ensuring a closed border (building a wall), restricting Muslims from entering the United States, de-globalization and bringing back jobs to the US, among many other very familiar but highly overlooked and somewhat disturbing political views, which he tagged MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!

Removal of VAT on aircraft will help sector- Aero boss

The Managing Director of Aero Contractors, Capt Ado Sanusi believed that removal of the Value Added Tax VAT) on aircraft parts, which was recently approved by government will strengthen the airline pertain in the country. He spoke with CHUKWUEMEKE IWELUNMO on the Aero Contractors MRO, the new national carrier and the recent aviation man of the year award on him by Weizo in Accra. Excerpts… What does this award in Accra as the Balofon Aviation Man of the Year in West Africa mean to you? I have been humble by this award; I thank the tourism sector for identifying our effort in building aviation industry in West and Central Africa. I dedicate the award to the hard working members of Aero Contractors, the staff members believe in me and in the dream we have in making West Africa a hub of aviation.

have a regulator and the industry is well regulated, you need to have a fair level ground, a fair environment, so I believe what Air Operators of Nigeria, AON is just asking is that the national carrier that is coming should be allowed to compete favourably with them, and I think that is fair and I don’t the government is going to unduly give the national carrier some advantage, I think it will allow the national carrier to grow as a business, the moment you don’t allow it to grow as a business, then it might not be sustainable and that is the truth and that is why Ethiopian Airlines is sustainable because they allowed it to grow as a sustainable business. And if you allow a business to grow as a sustainable business, you must allow it to compete with its peers so that it can now get immunisation of competition.

What is the latest development on your Maintenance Repair and Overhaul (MRO)? We are happy to say that the MRO has been developing, we have opened our doors to everybody, we are getting customers in Nigeria, West Africa, we have gotten Ghana Civil Aviation to recognise us and give us certification, we are working with Congo, Cameroun to get the certification. So we want to serve the west and central African communities in the aviation sector. The lifeline for Aero is the MRO because the MRO is a business that was neglected and now we are have revived it and want to bring it back to limelight to serve and fortunately for Aero Contractors, there is a lack of of formidable MRO in the region, so we are just filling that gap and by so doing we are just creating business for us and also creating jobs for the region.

What do you expect from Aero and its MRO in the next five years? I expect Aero to be a formidable name in West and Central Africa for Maintenance Repair and Overhaul, I also expect Aero to bounce back as an airline, I also expect Aero in the next five years to be a dominant factor in the oil and gas industry, so that are my expectations for Aero. When are you going to be independent of AMCON? AMCON has a plan to divest their shares in Aero Contractors and I think they have been doing that with more investors and that is what they want and that will be done very soon.

Does Nigeria need a National carrier? You know every country in the world will like to have a national carrier, so I support the national carrier for all the countries that are looking for national carriers, but what I want to say is with caution, that yes we want to have a national carrier, we want to establish a formidable carrier that will serve our people and the tourism industry, but we must learn from our past mistakes. So, establishing a national carrier will bring more jobs to me because definitely they are not establishing a national MRO. So I will definitely have an opportunity as an MRO to serve the national carrier. What is your take on the position of AON that the idea of using Tax Payers money to float a “National Carrier” in 2018 is not only counterproductive, but inimical to the overall interests of the present corps of private entrepreneurs? In every industry where you

Are you getting any preferential treatment than other domestic airlines as a government run carrier? No, no, we don’t get any preferential treatment and we are not government protected airline, we are just under receivership and the law under receivership protects you from other creditors, that is what it does and after that, you are not protected from any other thing.

Capt Ado Sanusi

What is your reaction about the removal of VAT from the aviation industry by the federal government? The removal of Value Added Tax, VAT in industry by the federal government is a welcome thing and we love it, off course AON has been canvassing for that, I think it will help the industry in easing the taxes levied on it.

Deutsche Virgin Atlantic drops Dubai Bank fails route over fierce competition stress

Increasingly tough competition on LondonDubai flights pushed Virgin Atlantic out of the market, underscoring the dominance of Emirates on the prized route. Having operated flights from Heathrow to Dubai for more than a decade, Virgin Atlantic said it was “no longer economically viable” to operate the route. With Dubai’s flagship airline Emirates operating numerous daily flights to London’s Heathrow as well as serving six other UK airports, Virgin Atlantic was poorly positioned to compete, experts said. “London to Dubai is served not only by Emirates, but also by British Airways. Both offering several flights per day, thus, there is obviously sufficient offer,” said Tobias Ruckerl,

CEO and consultant at Advanced Aviation Consulting. BA operates regular flights from its London Heathrow hub. “Virgin is a smaller player in this market and obviously they cannot stand the competition any more,” he said. “Dubai probably has not been a profitable route for Virgin Atlantic in some time,” added US-based aviation expert Jason Rabinowitz. “Emirates now has up to 10 daily flights to the London area, with nearly 5,000 seats offered each day each way. Virgin, on the other hand, offered a single flight. “Even if Virgin could compete on price, and it probably cannot, there is simply too much competition on the London-Dubai route to keep it up,” he said.

Virgin Atlantic cited “external factors” behind its decision to cancel the route, in a statement issued late Wednesday. “It’s never an easy decision to withdraw a route, and we’d like to thank our customers and dedicated team in Dubai for their loyalty over the last 12 years,” said Shai Weiss, chief commercial officer for Virgin Atlantic. The airline will continue to fly to Dubai until March 31 next year. It is the second airline this year to ditch flights between the emirate and the UK capital, with Royal Brunei Airlines announcing last month that it would no longer fly from Brunei to London via Dubai. Direct non-stop Brunei-London flights are to launch later this year. ARAB NEWS

Oil prices fall amid US, major economies dispute Oil prices dipped on Friday amid escalating trade friction between the United States and other major economies, although crude markets remain tight due to supply disruptions and generally high demand. US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures were at $73.19 a barrel at 0421 GMT, down 26 cents, or 0.4 percent, from their last settlement. WTI on Thursday hit its highest since November 2014 at

$74.03 per barrel. Brent crude futures were at $77.74 per barrel, down 11 cents, or 0.1 percent. Friday’s falls came as Asian stock markets were near nine-month lows, despite a small rebound, amid an escalation of trade disputes between the United States on one side and economies including China, India and the European Union on the other. China’s yuan slipped to a new low against the

US-dollar on Friday and despite a slight recovery was on course for its worst month on record, as the increasingly bitter trade row with the United States threatened to rattle the world’s secondbiggest economy. Traders worry that escalating tariffs on export goods, including US crude oil, will stall trading and eventually choke world economic growth. REUTERS

test

Reserve administers annual “stress tests” on the largest banks operating in the US. Deutsche Bank’s US division has failed the second round of the Federal Reserve’s annual twostage stress tests, designed to assess how well the sector could withstand another financial crisis. The German lender suffered from “widespread and critical deficiencies” in parts of its business, the Fed said. Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley were only granted “conditional” passes. But 31 of the 35 banks tested were given the all-clear. Stress tests were introduced in the wake of the 2008 financial crisis and every year America’s central bank, the Federal Reserve, puts the country’s banks, including foreign subsidiaries operating in the country, through their paces. The Fed measures whether banks are holding sufficient capital to cope with a recession and in the second part of the process it focuses on banks’ “capital plans” such as how much cash they intend to return to shareholders. However this is the first year that the results of the US units of foreign banks have been publicly released. All of the 35 largest banks subject to the tests passed the first part of the tests last week. But the Fed found Deutsche Bank’s US arm had “material weaknesses in the firm’s data capabilities and controls supporting its capital planning process, as well as weaknesses in its approaches and assumptions used to forecast revenues and losses under stress”. The verdict is another blow for the troubled German lender whose financial health has been under the spotlight recently. And it will require the bank to make changes to the way it operates in the US. Nike shares rise as sales momentum mounts

Nike is back in fashion in North America with a 3% rise in sales in the most recent quarter, propelling shares to a record high on Friday. It was the first quarterly year-on-year increase for the US sportswear company in the vital North American division in more than a year. Nike also said that sales growth this year would be better than previously expected. “We have momentum,” chief executive Mark Parker said. Nike said total revenues rose 13% to $9.8bn, also

better than analysts had forecast. While North America is the most important region for the firm and accounts for about 40% of revenues, international business is fuelling growth. In the most recent quarter, the biggest rise in sales was in Greater China, where revenue soared 25% year-on-year. chief Mark Parker says the company has momentum Nike has benefited from increasingly intense trainer fans and trends that favour retro styles,

such as its classic high-top Jordans. Its sleek Flyknit shoes, distinguished by their digitally knit cloth fabric, have also gained traction. The company, which now sells through online sites such as Amazon and Tmall, also said its efforts to boost online sales are paying off. Digital revenue grew by 41% in the most recent quarter. New York on Friday. “The Nike story is officially back at this point,” said Barclays analyst Matthew McClintock. Profits in the quarter rose 13% to $1.1bn helped by recent changes to the US tax code that cut its tax rate by more than half to 6.4%. The once ubiquitous Converse, however, has fallen out of fashion, with sales sinking 8% in the most recent quarter.

Gambian Govt ‘to sell-off’ Yahya Jammeh’s planes, cars online Gambia’s government plans to auction ex-President Yahya Jammeh’s luxury planes and cars online, the AFP news agency reports. Regional countries intervened to force Mr Jammeh into exile after he lost elections in December 2016 but refused to leave power.

He left behind five planes and 30 luxury cars, including Rolls-Royces and Bentleys, as well as four plots of land, AFP says. Last year, the government said it hoped to make millions of dollars from the sale of Mr Jammeh’s assets, which it wants to invest in the health and education sectors.

“What we are doing as a government now is to design a web portal where all the assets would be posted,” Lamin Camara, the finance ministry’s permanent secretary, told AFP. A date for the sale has yet to be decided. Source: BBC

Malaysia: Cash, jewelries seized from ex-PM worth $273m

Malaysian police said the total value of the bags of cash, jewelries, luxury purses, watches and other items seized from premises linked to former Prime Minister Najib Razak totalled up to $273m. Datuk Seri Amar Singh, head of the police commercial crime division in Malaysia, told reporters on Wednesday that the retail cost of all the items seized from six properties linked to Najib totalled between $224m-$273m. “We couldn’t do the counting at the premises because the numbers were too huge,” Singh said, adding that the seizures were the biggest in Malaysian history. It took three days, six cash counting

machines and 22 officials from the central bank to count the cash found at the premises, he said, adding the cash totalled $28.9m in 26 different currencies, including the Malaysian ringgit. Authorities are investigating Najib as part of their probe into how billions of dollars went missing from state fund 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB), which was founded by the former prime minister. Since unexpectedly losing a general election to Mahathir Mohamad in May, Najib has been barred from leaving the country, questioned by the anti-graft agency and has had his personal and family houses searched as part of the

1MDB probe. On Wednesday, police said they will soon call Najib and his wife, Rosmah, for more questioning, according to Reuters. Jewellery accounted for the biggest portion of the seizure from Najib’s properties - 12,000 pieces of jewellery that authorities said would cost up to $218.6m retail prices. The single most expensive item was a diamond necklace with yellow gold worth $1.59m at cost price, he said. Authorities are yet to establish who the owners of the seized items are, Singh said, adding that Najib and his wife Rosmah Mansor would “soon” be called in for questioning.

UN migration agency rejects Trump nominee The UN migration agency’s member states have rejected President Trump’s nominee for director-general, making it only the second time in the agency’s history that it will not be led by an American. Ken Isaacs, an executive with a Christian charity, was eliminated after three voting rounds, AFP reported. Mr Trump’s anti-immigration policies, including separating children from parents, have been widely criticised. The White House has also proposed cutting UN funding. Mr Isaacs meanwhile has a history of anti-Islam comments. Antonio Vitorino, a Portuguese former EU commissioner, has been elected to lead the International Organization for Migration (IOM) instead. Diplomats said Mr Vitorino’s bid had been helped by EU efforts to find a common response to the migrant crisis. Mr Isaacs made his Twitter account private after his nomination for the IOM leadership in February led to criticism. The Samaritan’s Purse executive had previously described Islam to

be an inherently violent religion on numerous occasions and retweeted xenophobic material. He has also refused to recognise the link between human activity and climate change. Having seen off Mr Isaacs’ challenge in the leadership ballot, Mr Vitorino defeated the IOM’s current deputy leader Laura Thompson, from Costa Rica, in a fourth round of voting. He replaces veteran US diplomat William Lacy Swing. The IOM has been led by an American throughout its 67-year history with one exception, from 1961 to 1969. BBC

FIFA: VAR checked 335 incidents in World Cup group stage FIFA said video assistant referee (VAR) crews conducted checks on 335 incidents during the World Cup group stage, helping achieve a 99.3 percent rate of correct decisions. The VAR system is being used at a World Cup for the first time in Russia. “335 incidents were checked by the VAR team. All the goals scored (122) were checked by the VAR, and in addition many other incidents occurring on the field,” Pierluigi Collina, the chairman of FIFA’s referees committee, said Friday. With 48 matches in the group stage, the figure averages out to almost seven incidents per game in Russia. “Within these 335 checks, we had 17 so-called VAR reviews,” said Collina. “We had 14 decisions changed by the intervention of the VAR. “We had 14 on-field reviews, with the referee going to the

monitor on the side of the pitch, while there were three decisions taken only by the VAR on direct review.” Collina said the three cases where the VAR directly intervened

were for an offside call, an incident that took place inside the area and mistaken identity. Of all the incidents scrutinised by the video officials, 95 percent of the initial decisions taken by referees would have been correct without VAR intervention. That rate increased to 99.3 percent with the assistance of VAR. “VAR doesn’t mean perfection,” Collina said. “There could still be some wrong interpretation or even mistakes, so it’s a not a perfection that can be reached having implemented VAR.” The average time required for a VAR review has been 80 seconds, although that number is slightly higher for a pitchside review. “In a couple of cases the final answer could have been given even earlier,” Collina said. “But in terms of being very accurate, the VAR preferred to spend five to 10 seconds more to be very, very sure.”

Following Tuesday’s exit of the Super Eagles from the 2018 FIFA World Cup, members of the team have been leaving their Essentuki Camp Base in Russia in trickles. Ademola Olajire, the Director of Communications of Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that most of the players have left Russia for their respective bases. “Instead of returning to Nigeria, the Super Eagles players have been returning to their respective bases one after the other, where they have since reunited with their families,’’ he said. Players who have had their early exit from the camp include team captain Mike Obi, Odion Ighalo, Victor Moses, Kelechi Iheanacho, Leon Balogun, Alex Iwobi, Kenneth Omeruo and Tyronne Ebuehi. Olajire, however, said those remaining in the team’s camp

include Daniel Akpeyi, Ikechukwu Ezenwa, Francis Uzoho, John Ogu, Chidozie Awaziem, Oghenekaro Etebo and Simeon Nwankwo. He told NAN that the duo of Ahmed Musa and Bryan Idowu are staying put in Russia where they ply their trade for their respective clubs. NAN reports that while Musa plays for CSKA Moscow, Idowu is a defender for Amkar Perm of Russia. However, the team’s Technical Adviser, Gernot Rohr, had stayed back in the team’s Essentuki camp to mark his 65th birthday anniversary on Thursday. Toyin Ibitoye, the team’s Media Officer, also said the coaching staff and other backroom staff would depart Russia on Friday and arrive in Abuja on Saturday. NAN reports that the Super Eagles had failed to reach the competition’s second round after a 1-2 loss to Argentina in their last Group D game played at St. Petersburg.

Reports: Lille ready to shell out €3.5 million for William Troost-Ekong French Ligue club Lille are prepared to fork out 3.5 million Euros to snap up Nigeria World Cup defender William Ekong from Turkish club Bursaspor. Ekong was an ever-present in the heart of the Eagles defence at Russia 2018. Last season, he joined Bursaspor from KAA Gent on a long-term deal. Ekong, who also holds Dutch citizenship courtesy of his mother, has had stints at Spurs and FK Haugesund of Norway, among several other clubs. He is a hard-tackling central defender, who also featured at the 2016 Rio Olympics, where Nigeria won a bronze medal. French club Lille are reorganising after barely escaping relegation this past season.

Andy Murray drawn to face Benoit Paire in Wimbledon first round Andy Murray has been drawn to face France’s Benoit Paire in the Wimbledon first round after the two-time champion entered the All England Club draw on Friday. Murray had left his participation in the grass-court Grand Slam to the last minute as the former world number one makes tentative progress in his return from hip surgery. The 31-year-old Scot has played just three matches since making his comeback last week after 11 months on the sidelines. Murray, whose ranking has dropped to 156, had an operation on his right hip in January and only returned to action on June 18 when he was beaten by Nick Kyrgios at Queen’s Club. The three-time Grand Slam winner saw off Stan Wawrinka at Eastbourne on Monday, but after losing to fellow Briton Kyle Edmund on Wednesday he conceded his fitness was still an issue. Despite his lack of match practice, Murray has apparently opted to give it a go at his home Grand Slam, where he will play in a best of five sets tournament for the first time since his Wimbledon quarter-final defeat against Sam Querrey 12 months ago. Murray, who defeated Paire in

straight sets at Wimbledon last year, could still withdraw from the tournament right up until the scheduled start of his clash with the world number 48. Wimbledon starts on Monday and Murray, who hasn’t publicly announced he is fit enough to play, is due to face the media in a press conference on Saturday. If he does take part, Murray is scheduled to face former US Open champion Juan Martin del Potro in the third round and may have to get past Rafael Nadal in the quarter-finals, Novak Djokovic in the semi-finals and Roger Federer in the final.

CBN Tennis Open: It will be legendary to lift cup 7th time, says Babalola

Diego Forlan: Cristiano Ronaldo is ‘50% of Portugal’ Uruguay will be “stopping 50% of Portugal” if they contain Cristiano Ronaldo in Saturday’s last-16 World Cup tie, says former striker Diego Forlan. Skipper Ronaldo has netted four times in Russia, including a hattrick in his side’s opening game against Spain. Uruguay are the only team in the competition yet to concede a goal after their three group games. “Ronaldo is a leader, the way he scores the goals and how important they are,” Forlan told BBC Radio 5 live. Real Madrid forward Ronaldo netted a brilliant last-minute freekick to claim a point against Spain and also scored the winner in the game against Morocco. He failed to find the net in the draw against Iran as his side finished second in Group B. It set up a knockout stage meeting with two-time champions

Uruguay, who topped Group A with maximum points ahead of hosts Russia, Saudi Arabia and Egypt. “We are a very defensive team and have very good defenders,” said Forlan, who scored 36 goals in 112 caps for Uruguay. “Ronaldo is a great player but I am confident with our defence and how the team are doing. “I am not worried defensively but we have to be careful, we have to be concentrated than other games. We respect everybody, it is not like we change because it is Portugal.” Is Ronaldo targeting golden boot? Forlan played with Ronaldo at Manchester United between 2003 and 2005 and acted as translator for the Portuguese when he joined from Sporting Lisbon. Although he struggled to find his best form at Old Trafford, Forlan

went on to play for Villarreal, Atletico Madrid and Inter Milan. At the 2010 World Cup, he scored five goals as Uruguay finished fourth and claimed the golden ball award for the best player in the competition. Asked if Ronaldo would be targeting the golden boot awarded given to the top scorer, Forlan said: “Ronaldo’s way of living is that he likes challenges. He has achieved so many things so maybe it is OK for him to be like that. “We have seen a different Ronaldo, he is more of a team player, he finishes and scores but others in the team do too. You do not see him shooting from all angles to get goals, this is why he is one of the best players in the world. “He knows that if he does not play well and the other teammates don’t score, he will be out of the competition.”

Defending champion of Central Bank of Nigeria(CBN), Senior Open Championship, Abdulmumuni Babalola, says it will be legendary for him to lift the cup for the seventh time in the tournament’s history. Babalola, current number two seed of Nigeria Tennis Federation(NTF), said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria(NAN) on Friday after defeating his semi-final opponent, Uche Oparaoji in two straight sets. According to him, winning the 40th edition of the championship will definitely make him a legend. Babalola had first won the championship in 2002 in the junior cadre. “I came from behind to win the 2002 edition. I have won the cup six times now,” he said. Commenting on his penultimate match, Babalola described his opponent as a very good player. “Oparaoji is a very good player to get to semi-final stage,. “I observed we are both lefthanded, trying to play smart but I think I was smarter today,” he said. Babalola had earlier defeated Emmanuel Sunday 6-2,6-3 in the quarter final stage. He will be squaring up for the final on Saturday against Sylvester Emmanuel, who defeated Clifford

Enoseregbe 3-6,6-2,6-4 in the second semi-final match. In the Women’s category Sarah Adegoke, the number one seed, will battle against Patience Onebamhoin, while Christie Agugbom will play against e Blessings Samuel, the number two seed, for the final ticket. Both male and female champions will emerge on Saturday who will each cart away N700,000 while the first runner-up in both categories will go home with N5000,000.
