For fighting against sexual violence, Mukwege, Murad win 2018 Nobel Peace Prize Mathew Dadiya, with Agency Report The book makers were proved wrong. United States Donald Trump and Korean leaders, were not in reckoning for the Nobel Peace Prize. Instead the prize went to Dr Denis Mukwege, a gynaecologist helping victims of sexual violence in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Ms Nadia Murad, a Yazidi rights activist and survivor of sexual slavery by Islamic State (IS). The Norwegian Nobel Committee said it had awarded Mukwege and Murad the prize for their efforts to end the use of sexual violence as a weapon of war. “Both laureates have made a crucial contribution to focusing attention on, and combating, such war crimes,” it said in its citation. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) also reports that Mukwege heads the Panzi Hospital in the eastern Congolese city of Bukavu. Opened in 1999, the clinic receives thousands of women each year, many of them requiring surgery from sexual violence. He had devoted his life to defending these victims, the citation said. Murad is an advocate for the Yazidi minority
in Iraq and for refugee and women’s rights in general. She was enslaved and raped by Islamic State fighters in Mosul, Iraq, in 2014. She was a witness who tells of the abuses perpetrated against herself and others, the citation said. “Each of them in their own way has helped to give greater visibility to war-time sexual violence, so that the perpetrators can be held accountable for their actions,” it said. Murad was 21-yearold in 2014 when Islamic State militants attacked the village where she had grown up in northern Iraq. The militants killed those who refused to convert to Islam, including six of her brothers and her mother. Murad, along with many of the other young women in her village, was taken into captivity by the militants, and sold repeatedly for sex as part of Islamic State’s slave trade. She eventually escaped captivity with the help of a Sunni Muslim family in Mosul, the group’s de facto capital in Iraq, and became an advocate for the rights of her community around the world. In 2017, Murad published a memoir of her ordeal, “The Last Girl”. In it, she recounted in harrowing detail her months in
captivity, her escape and her journey to activism. “At some point, there was rape and nothing else. This becomes your normal day,” she wrote. The militants’ attack on Yazidi communities in northern Iraq was part of what the United Nations has called a genocidal campaign launched by the Sunni militants against the religious minority. The award of the prize follows a year in which the abuse and mistreatment of women in all walks of life across the globe has been a focus of attention. Asked whether the #metoo movement, a prominent women’s rights activist forum, was an inspiration for this year’s prize, Nobel Committee Chairwoman, Berit Reiss-Andersen, said: “Metoo and war crimes are not quite the same. But they have in common that they see the suffering of women, the abuse of women and that it is important that women leave the concept of shame behind and speak up.” The Nobel Peace Prize will be presented to Mukwege and Murad in Oslo on December 10, the anniversary of the death of Swedish industrialist, Alfred Nobel, who founded the awards in his 1895 Will

2019: APC holds special national convention in Abuja today To adopt Buhari as its presidential flag bearer
Tom Okpe, Abuja The All Progressives Congress (APC) sole candidate in the Presidential election in 2019, President Muhammadu Buhari, will be adopted on Saturday as about 7,000 delegates will meet in a special convention at the Eagle Square, Abuja. Speaking on preparations for the convention, Borno State Governor Kashim Shettima, who stood in for the Chairman of the Convention Planning Committee, Oyo State Governor Abiola Ajimobi, said in states where there were parallel congresses, only delegates from the state executives approved by the National Working
Committee (NWC) would be allowed to participate in the exercise. Giving a breakdown of the number of delegates, Shettima said that 7, 000 delegates are expected and in order to ensure that those from far-flung states make it in time for the exercise, “we decided to schedule it for 2pm,” adding that aside the statutory delegates, there would be three delegates drawn from each local government and area councils of the federation. He described the crisis currently afflicting the party as a “family affair” which would be resolved in no time, saying that, “This is a family affair and the NWC is working assiduously to resolve
all the issues”. He also said that Edo, Imo, Anambra and Zamfara states are excluded, adding that: “while delegates from other states would be participating in the process of adopting President Buhari, their counterparts in Edo, Imo, Anambra and Zamfara would be in their states sweating to elect Senatorial, House of Representatives and State Assembly candidates. They will also be electing governorship candidates in Imo and Zamfara states. The development is due to the decision of the NWC which severally postponed the primaries in those states only to now fix the exercises for Saturday and Sunday.

PDP presidential primary: Who faces Buhari in 2019? Tunde Opalana, Abuja
The dice for the 2019 presidential election is cast as the major opposition party in the country, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), will in the next 24 hours name a candidate who will face incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari, the sole candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). The PDP will elect its candidate among 12 aspirants jostling for the ticket in a presidential primary contest in Port Harcourt, the capital of Rivers State. The 12 aspirants are former PDP chairman, Senator Ahmed Makarfi, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former governor of Kano State, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, former governor of Jigawa State, Sule Lamido, former governor of Sokoto State, Attahiru Bafarawa, former governor of Plateau State, Senator Jonah Jang, former Minister of Special Duties , Kabiru Tanimu Turaki (SAN), former Senate President, David Mark, incumbent Senate President, Bukola Saraki, Baze University proprietor, Dr. Datti Baba Ahmed, Gombe State Governor Ibrahim Dankwambo and Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal. Notwithstanding the attempt by the National Assembly to alter the 2019 elections timetable through a purported election sequencing, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had stuck to Saturday, February 16, 2019 as the date for the presidential election. Though the PDP on Thursday raised the alarm that the APC-led Presidency had plans to derail its Port Harcourt convention, the party insisted that the convention starts at about 7am today. Today’s primary is seen by political pundits as a make or mar exercise for the party considering the number and calibre of aspirants fighting for the soul of PDP, especially the fear of managing post -convention crisis which may occur after the event. Various organs of the party, especially the Board of Trustees (BoT) and the National Working Committee (NWC) had made spirited efforts to go into today’s primary with lesser number of aspirants. Their concern was to reduce the number with the aim of working on other variables that will produce a strongest candidate capable of reducing the voting support base of
President Buhari. But it is unfortunate that the consensus arrangement did not work out as none of the aspirants was ready to swallow his pride after paying N12 million to obtain expression of interest and nomination forms. Nonetheless, the party hierarchy had also tried to be above partisanship by reassuring all aspirants of a level play ground, promising them a free, fair and credible primary that will be acceptable to all. The party went ahead to give each aspirant the opportunity of nominating two representatives into the convention election committee to ensure transparency and a thorough delegates accreditation process in which state party chairmen will lead their states delegates to the accreditation desks at the entrance to the Adokiye Amaesimaka Stadium, venue of the convention. As part of internal crisis management mechanism, the party had entered into a bond with all the aspirants who had vowed to support whoever emerges victorious in Port Harcourt. All of them agreed to place the sole interest of the party which is to take over power above individual personal interests. As expected, a lot of factors will determine the outcome of the primary but of great importance is the influence of the PDP governors. Though it is obvious that not all the 14 governors can speak with one voice, any aspirant that has the support of at least half of the governors may have his chances brightened as this is the only organ of the party that has shown preference for aspirants. If electronic voting and opinion polls conducted prior to today’s primary by various opinion moulders are anything to go by, the primary could have been conducted among six leading contenders namely former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Senate President Bukola Saraki, Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal, former Kano State governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, Gombe State Governor Ibrahim Dankwambo and former Jigawa State governor, Sule Lamido. But the contest, to a certain extent, will also be decided by individual strength and weaknesses of the aspirants.
The 12 aspirants in focus: Atiku Abubakar
Atiku Abubakar is a serial contender who is leaving nothing to
chance in his fourth attempt at ruling Nigeria after leaving the power centre stage in 2003 when he fell out of favour from the then President Olusegun Obasanjo. Should preparation be the only yardstick for the contest in this game, Atiku is far ahead of others as he has a formidable, well oiled and intimidating political structure with tentacles across nooks and crannies of the country. To cap it all, he has the largest financial war chest to prosecute the presidential project, the kind of fund needed to match a Buhari with the state fund at his disposal. His depth of consultations ahead of today’s contest is unrivalled. This is seen in the arrays of 60 politicians carefully selected across the 36 states of the federation to spearhead and coordinate his campaign. He is indeed, a master strategist. Atiku has on several occasions put no one in doubt that he is fully aware of what he wants to do with power. He has a well articulated agenda. The blueprint of his government which is premised on restructuring of the country is also focused on entrepreneurial education system, creation of employment opportunities and wealth for women and the youth and development of basic infrastructure. His limitation might be the noncomfortability of the PDP governors forum with his choice as they will see him as a president that could not be easily controlled. He, nevertheless, has a few governors that are on his side. Also, his influence among power brokers in the country referred to as owners of the Nigerian project is questionable. His former boss, Obasanjo, former military president, Ibrahim Babangida, former Defence minister, Theophilus Danjuma, all retired army generals, are not favourably disposed to an Atiku presidency and this may slightly affect his chances.
Bukola Saraki
Though a late entrant into the race, Saraki has moved in a faster political speed across the country, selling his candidacy. Apart from coming from a relatively known family of the Abubakar Olusola Saraki political dynasty of Ilorin, this former twoterm governor of Kwara State started manifesting his political deftness and dexterity as chairman of the Nigerian Governors Forum in the
ways he negotiated with the Federal Government over national issues of national concern. His emergence as the President of the 8th Senate and his ability thereafter to navigate the political waters of the parliament across party level really attest to his political maturity, while the face-off between the Buhari Presidency and the National Assembly under his chairmanship really put Saraki in the front burner as a maverick politician who understands the power game of politics. His relative youthfulness could work for him as he is seen by the youth as a bridge builder between the older and younger generation. He also could be said to have the support of political associates of his late father and that of his many parliamentary friends and allies. Though Saraki is from the North Central, coming from Ilorin, a dominantly Yoruba speaking town, might be a big minus in a race highly favourable to a core Northerner His indifference to the Buhari administration largely perceived as anti-northern affront by an average person from the North irrespective of party affiliations might count against him. Above all, till today, Saraki in some quarters is believed to be fronting for the emergence of one of the aspirants Tambuwal and it may not come as a surprise if he steps down before the casting of ballots in Port Harcourt.
Aminu Tambuwal
The former Speaker, House of Representatives and incumbent Sokoto State Governor, is one of the late entrants into the PDP presidential race, having recently defected from the All Progressives Congress (APC), a platform on which he won the state governorship seat. He could be said to be basking on his experience as a parliamentarian of above a decade knowledge and the status of being a state governor, which is a greater factor working for him among the PDP Governors Forum with the Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike, selling his candidacy to his colleagues and other organs of the he party. Tambuwal also could be said to be counting on his North-West geopolitical base as a source of electoral strength. Though not confirmed, a source had it that a few of the aspirants including Saraki are fronting for Tambuwal candidacy as the
Court sentences driver to death for knocking down FRSC personnel Andrew Orolua, Abuja
A Kebbi State High Court in Birnin Kebbi, on Friday, sentenced a driver, Usman Aliyu, to death for killing a Road Marshal Assistant (RMA III), Muhammad Babangida, a staff of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in a reckless driving. According to a statement by the Corps Public Education Officer, Bisi Kazeem, the incident occurred along Ahmadu Bello way in the state capital,
Birnin Kebbi, on April 3, 2017. The convict, Aliyu, drove a black Toyota Corolla saloon car with registration number, KLG 342 AA on the said day and initially attempted to knock down Marshal Inspector (III), Abubakar Garba Abubakar, of the same patrol team. However, noticing he couldn’t knock him down, he recklessly headed for the deceased and ensured that he knocked him to death as his first target, as Inspector Garba narrowly escaped the hit.
The accused, who bagged a death sentence on Wednesday, October 4, 2018, was also reported to have hit and ran, knowing his victim was dead. But he was arrested along Kalgo Road by men of the Nigeria Police Force after intelligence, following the alarm raised by the FRSC team. The Corps Marshal, Dr. Boboye Oyeyemi, had recently condemned the incessant killing of FRSC personnel while lamenting that the Corps has lost 74 personnel to
reckless drivers in the last 18 months. Oyeyemi said, “The Federal Road Safety Corps will not stop at ensuring the prosecution of those errand drivers. It is my responsibility to ensure the safety of my personnel on the highway, so if you knock my personnel, and you are running away, I will go after you”. The FRSC boss therefore warned drivers to desist from such unlawful and inhuman act and always ensure that they operate within the ambit of the law.
popular candidate of PDP governors spearheaded by Wike who fought the party tooth and nail to secure Port Harcourt, his domain, as the preferred venue. Left to the support he enjoys from the Governors’ Forum, Tambuwal is seen as not too eloquent personality for the job and that he weaves less charisma. He is a leading light in the race with majority of delegates from the PDP controlled states behind him. The candidature of the Sokoto State governor is also believed to enjoy the support of the Caliphate, a very strong ethno-religious body that sells him to the larger North- West delegates.
Rabiu Kwankwaso
A two term governor of Kano State, former minister of Defence, Kwankwaso, a serving senator, is one of the favourites for the PDP presidency. A politician of note with a cult-like support base in the Kwankwasiya Movement, about the largest political movement presently in Nigeria, Kwankwaso banks largely on his popularity among the down trodden in the North, He, no doubt, is the politician with the largest support base in the North, a factor that can spring surprise at the convention. The Kano senator is highly rated in terms of public service and performance in office as a governor. His track records as a state executive in the areas of education, peaceful coexistence of various ethno-religious groups, vocational and human capital developments remains unequal in the state. Contrary to a belief that he is fanatical religious, Kwankwaso could be remembered to have fallen out of favour with his people over his stance on the Sharia Islamic law policy, to which he lost his re-election bid as a governor in 2003. He has proved himself to be a detribalised Nigerian by supporting the late MKO Abiola presidential bid against Kano-born Bashir Tofa in the 1993 presidential election as well as supporting former President Olusegun Obassnjo against the candidature of the late Abubakar Rimi in 1999. Though in favour with the likes of Obasanjo, Kwankwaso, like Atiku, is seen as largely uncontrollable by certain power brokers who consider him as a meaner politician than Buhari.
Sule Lamido
This is also one politician that enjoys home support not only in Jigawa State where he was a twoterm governor but other states in the North. Lamido is a party man to the core. He never deserted PDP during its dark days as the opposition arrowhead. His track records of service could attest to his desirability as PDP presidential candidate. He was adjudged to have left indelible marks in the area of infrastructural development in the eight years of his administration in Kano State. Though a former governor, he is not in the favour books of the PDP governors and this may work slightly against him. He as well does not command good standing in the southern part of the country.

Police teargas Secondus, Saraki, others as PDP ...Who faces Buhari in protests, demands declaration of Adeleke as Osun gov 2019? Tunde Opalana, Abuja Policemen on guard duty at Force Headquarters, Abuja, on Friday afternoon, used teargas to disperse Peopls Democratic Party (PDP) leaders who were on peaceful protest at the Force Headquarters to demand the declaration of Ademola Adeleke, its candidate, as winner of Osun State governorship election. The PDP leaders were led by the national chairman, Prince Uche Secondus, Senate President Bukola Saraki and Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara. Others were Senator Dino Melaye, who moderated the peaceful protest and PDP presidential aspirants - Rabiu Kwankwaso, Tanimu Turaki, Aminu Tambuwal, and Ekiti State governor, Ayodele Fayose. The Police, who were apparently waiting for the protesters, barricaded the road leading to the Force Headquarters and did not entertain the approaching politicians led by Dino Melaye. On defying police instruction to stay back, the police started shooting tear gas canisters into the air to dispel the protesters. They later gathered in front of the Police Children School adjacent to the Force Headquarters where they made their demand and condemned police involvement in election fraud in Ekiti and Osun states. The PDP leaders had earlier visited the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to demand the declaration of Adeleke as Osun State governor-elect, the immediate resignation of both the INEC chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu and a national commissioner, Mrs. Amina Zakari, on the ground of gross incompetence to conduct free, fair and credible
elections. Addressing INEC officials at the entrance to the commission’s office, PDP chairman, Secondus said Nigerians are aware of the activities of INEC and police in recent elections. “Therefore, we demand that INEC Chairman should resign, Amina Zakariyau should resign. She is the manipulator of all elections”, he said. Dino Melaye warned that the protest is an introduction to civil disobedience, stressing that the electoral impunity, the political acrobatism, the embarrassment and intimidation of opposition in Nigeria is enough. “We want to remind INEC that it is not a parastatal of APC, INEC is not a department of APC. By our constitution and electoral laws, INEC is not synonymous to APC. We are here to say for the last time, we say enough is enough”, said Melaye. Saraki reminded INEC of its responsibility by law, by the constitution to do what is right to all Nigerians. “Enough is enough of election that are not credible. Enough is enough of impunity. Enough is enough of harrasment. INEC you met a standard, don’t take us back. “Nigeria has raised the standard of electoral processes, take us forward, don’t take us backward. The last two elections have been said all over villages, towns, Africa, other continents that it was a sham. INEC enough is enough”, he said. Governor Fayose said: “We want to let INEC know a few things and remind them that the damage done to this country is enough. The damage done to our democracy and by extension the common man is enough. “If the people cannot choose their leader anymore, then we are in trouble. In 2014, APC won election in Osun State by 114,000 votes. But this last election, with
all the rigging, APC won by 400 votes, that is a statement enough to say APC is no more in demand in Nigeria. “We are not asking for favours, this country and this INEC belong to Nigerians and Nigerians must be respected by allowing them to make a choice. “If Jonathan had behaveg this way, we would not have a Buhari in power. We had a Buhari in power because somebody thought the rights of Nigerians must not be trampled upon by INEC and everybody received the present administration with open hands”. Tambuwal specifically admonished INEC chairman not to allow his reputation be dragged in the mud. “I believe that Chairman of INEC before this temporary assignment, you have a history and you have a record. Don’t allow anybody no matter how high to use you to undermine the wills of Nigerians. You cannot suppress us, you can not intimidate us. Elections in Nigeria must be held freely and fairly, and whoever wins should be given the mandate. That is what we want and we shall take nothing less,” the Sokoto governor said. Responding on behalf of INEC, the National Commissioner on Legal Matters, May AgbamucheMbu, said the commission takes the demonstration very seriously. “We are happy that the protest is peaceful and carried out in civilized manner. INEC is up to this job, we are all here in INEC as professionals and not politicians. We are going to do our best come 2019. I must say we are a team and decisions are made by the commission and not by any individual. All your comments have been noted and it will be passed to the chairman and the entire commission”, she said Condemning the attack by the police, the national

Also, he is seen as a politician with limited financial resources to prosecute the presidential agenda. Lamido may not be considered by the party because of corruption case wound around him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

publicity secretary of the party, Kola Ologbondiyan, in a statement, described the attack as “dastardly, unwarranted and unprovoked”. The PDP vowed that no amount of attacks, aggression or acts of intimidation will deter it from confronting and dismantling the rigging machinery of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and coast to victory in 2019. “This unwarranted attack has left no one in doubt that our Police has finally been turned into a militant wing of the APC, with direct orders to use force to repress opposition and turn our nation into a one party state. “It has also shown that the Police, under President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration, has officially declared war on the opposition and there is no way our safety is guaranteed under the current police leadership. “If the Police, which ought to protect the people, the law and the democratic process, could show such violent aggression on notable leaders, then it can no longer be trusted with the welfare and safety of regular citizens. “One can only imagine the level of violence that is being daily unleashed on our citizens by the APC- control Federal Police”, he said.
NJC recommends Justice Abba Aji to S’Court, 7 others for elevation Andrew Orolua, Abuja
The National Judicial Council (NJC) has recommended a Justice of the Court of Appeal (JCA), Justice Uwani Musa Abba Aji, to President Muhammadu Buhari for nomination as Justice of the Supreme Court. The Council also recommended to the Governors of Abia, Benue, Ogun, Oyo and Kwara states
eight judicial officers for appointments as state Chief judges and Kadi Sharia Court of Appeal. This is contained in a statement made available on Friday by the Director of Information, NJC, Mr Soji Oye Esq. He stated that the decision to elevate Justice Aji and others was reached during the 87th Council meeting of 3rd and 4th October, 2018 chaired by the Chief Justice of
Nigeria (CJN), Justice Walter Onnoghen. Those recommended to the State Governors for elevation are Justice Onuoha Arisa Kalu Ogwe as the Chief Judge of Abia State High Court of Justice, Justice Aondover Kaka’an as the Chief Judge, Benue State High Court of Justice, Justice Mosunmola Arinola Dipeolu as the Chief Judge of Ogun State High Court of Justice. Three lawyers with minimum
of 10 years experience: Oludayo Oluwabamise Osunfisan, Olusola Stephen Oloyede and Olatunde Hassan Oyajinmi were recommended to Ogun State governor for appointment as judges of Ogun State High Court of Justice. Also recommended for appointments are Zakariyah Abdulrasaq as Kadi, Sharia Court of Appeal, Kwara State and Justice Eni Esan as President, Customary Court of Appeal, Oyo State.
Young, suave and urban politician, the governor of Gombe State is one aspirant being considered in many quarters as a potential president. A great performer, Dankwambo, an accountant by profession and former Accountant General of the Federation and two term governor, has an impressive credential added to his youthfulness. His weakness, however, lies in his coming from the NorthEast with less voting strength. He is also considered as having limited financial muscle to prosecute the agenda.
Attahiru Bafarawa
The former governor of Sokoto State is one of the cerebrally balanced aspirants qualified for the plum job. Though he has kept a low profile since he left office as governor, his interest in the race came as no surprise to many because of his amiable track record in governance. Bafarawa, however, is classified as one of the politicians of yester - years who can hardly fit into the present high tech politics coupled with the fact that he has lost touch with old allies and that he is financially not buoyant enough to go through the financial rigour of the contest. Probably conceding defeat even before today’s primary, he was less visible in the political field in terms of consultation and he is not enjoying significant support from influential groups of the party. It would not be surprising if he steps down before voting later in the day.
Datti Baba Ahmed
The academician and proprietor of the Baze University, Abuja is not a known figure politically, having served in the parliament as member, House of Representatives and a senator. Upwardly mobile personality, his campaign was largely done in the media rather than on the field. His seeming political obscurity before his foray into the presidential race is not helping him as many people think he was in the race just to make political statement but never seriously prepared for the race.
He also may likely step down before voting today.
David Mark
Former military governor, administrator, communications minister and former Senate president, Mark, a late entrant into the race, has serious presence in the race. His ability to administer men and resources as a Senate president speaks volume. He had a firm grip of the upper chamber of the legislature for the period he held sway. He could be said to be banking on the military confraternity of Obasanjo, Danjuma and others but he may not be enjoying their full support for the 2019 race. Also, Mark’s affinity with the North Central geopolitical zone may not work in his favour.
Jonah Jang
The senator representing Plateau North senatorial district is less visible in the race. He has not been seen moving round soliciting for delegates support. He could not be said to enjoy the support of the military fraternity despite being a former military governor, neither could any serious politician be seen identified with his mission. Jang is considered as too old, frail and financially weak for the contest. He was believed to be fronting for another aspirant and may likely step down today.
Ahmed Makarfi
Former governor of Kaduna State and former caretaker chairman of the party, Makarfi is a loyal party man who stood by the party through thick and thin. If service and loyalty were to be a yardstick, Makarfi should be leading the pack. He is amiably loved across party lines. He also has an impressive record of public service as a governor and a senator. This is one aspirant who is highly unpredictable. He may dump his ambition at the eleventh hour and declare support for one of the leading contenders.
Kabiru Tanimu Turaki
A Senior Advocate of Nigeria, a successful lawyer and gentle Nigerian whose foray into the race was surprise because of his little presence in the political space apart, he being a former Minister of Special Duties. Turaki is sound and intelligent. His campaign train moved round some parts of the country but he was accorded reception mostly in northern states. He is seen to be more serious in the race and stand the chance of polling unexpected votes even as a dark horse in the race.

2019 Polls: APC clears 24 governorship aspirants
…Imo, Anambra, Edo, Zamfara states conduct primaries today Tom Okpe, Abuja
Following the Governorship Primaries of the All Progressives Congress (APC) held across the country to pick candidates that will fly the party’s flag in the 2019 general elections, the Party’s National Working Committee (NWC) at its meeting held on Thursday, October 4, ratified the reports of the various Electoral Committees and adopts 24 aspirants as Governorship candidates of the party. According to the spokesman of the party, Yekini Nabena, the incumbent governor of Kano State, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, Mohammed Abubakar - Bauchi State, Simon Lalong - Plateau State, Nasir el-Rufai - Kaduna State and Mohammed Badaru Abubakar of Jigawa State were cleared to context the race in their states. Others are: Ahmed Aliyu - Sokoto State, Abubakar Atiku Bagudu - Kebbi State, Aminu Bello Masari - Katsina
State, Abubakar Sani Bello - Niger State, Babagana Umara-Zulum - Borno State, Mai Mala Buni - Yobe State, Abubakar A. Sule - Nasarawa State, Emmanuel Jimme - Benue State, Babajide Sanwo– Olu - Lagos State, Tonye Cole - Rivers State and Uche Ogah - Abia State. The party’s NWC also confirmed that Nsima Ekere of Akwa-Ibom State, Adebayo Adelabu - Oyo State, Dapo Abiodun - Ogun State, Great Ogboru - Delta State, Owan Enoh - CrossRiver, Inuwa Yahaya - Gombe State, Sunny Ogboji - Ebonyi State and Sani Abubakar Danladi for Taraba State. Meanwhile, at a press conference on Friday at the party secretariat in Abuja, the acting Publicity Secretary of the Party, Yekini Nabena said it was important to ensure that returns are made in Imo, Zamfara, Edo and Anambra States saying that those states due to the deadline given by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), for the conduct of party primaries. He also added that the exercise was however underway in Adamawa state.
“In Edo state, the Senate, House of Representatives and State Assembly primaries will take place tomorrow, Saturday until Sunday, same for Imo, Anambra and Zamfara. The exercise is already ongoing in Adamawa”, he said. Nabena also said that delegates from these states would not be disenfranchised from taking part in the national convention adding that, “what is more important is to ensure that the INEC deadline is met so that the party could field candidates in those states. He faults the purported suspension of Senator Omo-Agege, stressing that those who carried out the action did so illegally. “Who gave the person the right to suspend the senator? Is that how you suspend a senator? Go through our constitution, there is a process to follow in doing that and not suspending someone on the pages of newspapers”, Nabena stated. A faction of the party in Delta state had reportedly suspended the senator, accusing him of engaging in anti-party activities.

Agbaje emerges Lagos PDP guber candidate Patrick Okohue, Lagos The Lagos State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Friday for the second time elected Mr Jimi Agbaje, as its governorship candidate for the 2019 elections in the state. Agbaje who polled a total of 1,100 votes as against his lone challenger, Mr Adedeji Doherty, an engineer who scored 724 votes at the party’s primary held in Oregun area of the state, will be competing against the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Babajide SanwoOlu and candidates of other parties. The voting exercise which had 23 invalid votes lasted about 30 hours, having commenced on Thursday, and ended on Friday afternoon. Announcing the result of the exercise, Chairman of the 5-man panel constituted by the PDP National Working Committee (NWC) on Lagos governorship primary, Senator Victor Oyofo, described the exercise as free and fair. He further described the exercise as keenly a contested election, adding that it portrayed what
the country’s democracy should look like. “The primary which commenced yesterday and was concluded today, was a keenly contested election which portrayed what our democracy should look like. “And since the votes of both candidates have counted. By the power conferred on me, I declare Chief Agbaje as the winner of the contest. I believe that he would be the next governor of Lagos State,” Oyofo said. In his acceptance speech, Agbaje stressed that his decision to contest for the post was to free Lagos from the disease that had constantly affected it’s growth, adding that Lagos was seriously infected by a disease. “There is need for us to free Lagos from the disease that has affected it. In few weeks, I will be explaining that, but the state is seriously infected by a disease. “All other diseases that had affected the state were due to the symptoms of that disease,” he said. He stated that to achieve this he would defeat Sanwo-Olu and other contenders and become the next governor of the state.
On how he will achieve the feat considering the grip of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) on the state, Agbaje stressed that his campaign policy would be to build on the successes he recorded during the 2015 election in the state. “We recorded so much in 2015 and we have to build on it. I believe that was the reason the party members decided to elect me again. And that gives me the confidence that we will win next year,” Agbaje said. Accepting the outcome of the primary, Doherty assures Agbaje of his support to free Lagos from its challenges, saying the debt already incurred by present and previous administration cannot be paid easily by anyone. Agbaje, who lost to Governor Akinwunmi Ambode during the 2015 election, will again face the APC whose candidate will be Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu in the 2019 poll. The pharmacist, it would be recalled, contested same position on the platform of PDP in 2015 election and lost the contest to the incumbent, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode with about 100,000 votes.

I look forward to playing a mad woman role - Nkechi Blessing Endowed actress, Nkechi Blessing Sunday spoke with MUTIAT ALLI about her supposed big size, falling off the stage at the recently held City People Movie awards, her supposed beef with Ghanaian actress, Juliet Ibrahim, and her dream role amongst others. Enjoy… What is your new movie, Unsane about? The movie is about a particular guy who has medical issues but his not aware of it, most time he acts like a complete idiot; even though I am not willing to give out much about the coming movie until its out but meanwhile it’s a fantastic movie Nigerians should look out for because it’s going to make you stay glued to your TV from start to finish. Why the title, Unsane and not Insane? Well because of the purpose of the storyline, using Insane as the title will not be appropriate because Insane in actual sense means a complete mad man while as regards our own title which is Unsane is that fact the character in the movie is normal but sometimes act weird; that is the plot twist in the movie. I will have gone for the title ‘Complete Idiot’ but I wanted something unique and a straight title. So what is the language structure of the movie? The movie is shut in complete English language because I don’t think we spoke up to 10% of Yoruba through-out the shooting. It’s just time to up the game in the industry and we seriously getting there. Is it a cinema Job? For now I can’t say that but since we commence shoot, I can see that I am shooting a huge project that needs huge viewings which might be going to cinema. What is the estimated budget of this movie? Quite a lot of money; so I can really put a peg amount on it. We have spent a lot and still spending. A lot of people a times consider you as upcoming artiste; how do you react when such comments are passed towards you. I get that a lot but am not actually moved by that because as long as people appreciate my creative process, I am good to go as I won’t allow such compliment to deprive me of giving my best at all time. I have been in the industry for quite sometimes now, precisely from 2008-2009. I have been in the industry for say 10 years, so if you are in that category of people that still tag me upcoming that mean you have not been watching well. It took
me a lot of hard work to be where I am today and I appreciate God almighty for his immense grace. It took you seven years to be known after your movie, ‘Omoge Lekki’ pushed your face out; what do you think you did right now? For me, I think social media really helped my career a lot most especially the instagram platform because I talk a lot on social media and maybe that is more the reason a lot of people have tagged me drama queen which I don’t care as long as I am getting the attention that I need. They say when a lady is been tagged a drama queen and when she eventually gets into a serious relationship, she tend to mellow down; are you emotional? I am drama queen when it comes to everywhere that is when I am on set or off set because I don’t like to be cheated but that does not mean I am not submissive or I can’t be tamed. So what can someone do to tame a person like Nkechi? Maybe 500 million naira You are blessed physically, how do you feel when you walk around and people tend to complement you based on your backside? The honest truth is that I am used to such complement because even while we were filming a street scene and I was required to walk around, a lot of passer’s by were just screaming but because such is already part of me. I did not mind because I won’t remove that part of my body. Don’t you sometimes feel embarrassed when the compliment is too getting too much? Never!! Because I know I have got a beautiful behind and I can’t be unhappy with what God gave me. How do you feel when people tend to appreciate your curves more than the beauty itself? They have no choice than to see the curves before the beauty because it is obvious and cannot
be hidden; you cannot hide God’s blessings and I am very comfortable with it at all time. I have always been comfortable with my body from day one. While I was growing up, I was very skinny but a very big ass and now while growing up, I have a bigger body and all my body parts rhyme together and the fact is God gave me a perfect fat leg to carry the big behind. You fell at the City people Movies award; how did that happen? My colleague Jumoke Odetola won the Best actress category which I was equally nominated too, so I went on stage to cheer her up and while coming down the stairs and I don’t know where a glass cup came from and it gave me a cut on the leg. How did you now feel that after the fall, the next category that was called, you won? That is what I call grace because when I took a fall, the award rose me up. Didn’t you feel embarrassed when you fell? I was not because with the blood stain on my leg, I walked majestically to the stage to receive my award because when I fell, I thought it was normal but it was not as so many enemies were in front of me who did not even stand up to assist me. Those that I know and won’t like to mention their names were even laughing at me. A lot of people were of the opinion that at the point comedian Woli Arole slapped you; a miracle venza car came in for you?
Woli Arole is my very good friend and to correct that impression, I bought my car in the US and it took two month to get to Nigeria. All the while my car was on the way and the slap came in between, so for people to say that it’s just normal. What is your present relationship with Ghanaian actress Juliet Ibrahim after you both had a social media argument? I have apologized to her and moved on but she blocked me and that’s her business. I am at peace with myself because I did apologize and she never accepted it. Have you met her before? Not at all Do we see a case where you can invite her to your movie set? Off course I will if she answers Do you still have a dream role you want to play? Yes and that is the role of a mad woman because I want to portray myself as a versatile actor; I have played quite a lot of roles and also I look forward to playing a ghetto kind of role where I will showcase the rough side of me. What will you consider the most interesting part of your job? There are a lot but the one I appreciate more was when I paid in dollars in the movie ‘Ghost and the Tout’ as produced by Toyin Abraham.

Prof. Ahmed Ahidjo’s advice on uterine fibroid The Nigerian Society of Interventional Radiology (NISIR) has revealed that about 25% of Nigerian women in their reproductive age are living with uterine fibroid unaware. At the first Annual Scientific Meeting of NISIR in Lagos recently themed ‘Minimally invasive therapies, benefitting patients, saving lives’, the President NISIR, Prof. Ahmed Ahidjo, noted that uterine fibroid can be well treated with the inclusive interventional radiology procedures. Speaking on the birth of NISIR, Ahidjo said it is a new organisation first established in 2010 at Akodo, Lagos State to enhance the art and science of interventional radiology and research through educational, scientific, literary, advocacy, regulatory and professional activities. “We started this year’s back and now the society is expanding. I will say the government should intervene in providing this medical service. We are all complaining of medical tourism, most of those seeking for international medical attention also go for this same interventional procedures. We are calling on the government to help
assist to establish a national centre of interventional radiology in Nigeria which will serve as a training centre and a service providing centre for the general population. “We will also want to plead with the government to help initiate an intervention radiology centre in each of the teaching hospital in all geopolitical zones. The burden is getting too much that the hospitals can’t do this on their own without government intervention. On the objectives of the organization, he said “the promotion of interventional radiology at appropriate forums especially in the West African Subregion. In pursuit of its objectives, NISIR aimed not only to address but to also provide suggestions and solutions regarding the important issues which currently face interventional radiology by adopting more of an active role within the radiological industry and the government and it relevant agencies. Member Board of Trustee, NISIR, Prof. Abiodun Adeyinka, urged the government to consider a special budgetary for radiology and radiotherapy for sufficient funding. “We are very few for the number of the
population of Nigeria. First, we should try appeal to the government to fund radiology and radiotherapy. Equipments are very expensive. And such should come from a different budgetary entirely. We need to draw government attention to proper funding. Another thing is that government must train us. With that we can build on human development” Adeyinka said Speaking on the essentiality of the organization, Chairman Local Organisation Committee, NISIR Conference 2018, Dr. Ifeanyi Ukachukwu said the society was setup to harness radiologists and to solicit for facilities to stop Nigerians from medical tourism. “Nigeria has a capacity and manpower for these services. The problem is not about manpower but equipments for treating patients. Patients can get better if they are treated with interventional radiology techniques and they are fast, and easy. We want as many doctors to know about this. For non-radiologists, we want them to cooperate with us by referring patients to us rather than referring them abroad. Money spent abroad should be reverse round in equipping our health facilities” he said.
2019: Prophet Fufeyin warns Ahead of the 2019 elections, General Overseer and Founder of Christ Mercy Land Deliverance Ministry in Effurun, Delta State, Prophet Jeremiah Omoto Fufeyin has emphasised on the need for men of God to be careful while making political prophecies. Speaking with a group of journalists in Delta State recently, the Prophet said many men of God were always giving failed prophecies because it could change within seconds. He said: “This is a warning to all prophets and pastors who like to prophesise. Many have prophesized and many have failed. When making political prophecies, men of God have to be very careful so that they will not
put their grace into or disgrace. When prophesize to the life of a woman or man, who is contesting for a political office, y o u

continue to pray about it until it comes to a reality.” According to him, when it comes to prophecies, God has the final say and it can favour anyone at any time. “God, in His Mercy, decides whatever He gives to His children. A prophecy can raise a man in a second and a prophecy can bring a man down in the next second. Since man doesn’t understand the ways of God, pastors or prophets must be very careful when making political prophecies. God can change His mind to favour anyone at any time; He has the final say,” Fufeyin admonished.

Between K1 and Saraki Fuji music living legend, K1 De Ultimate has dismissed the video making the rounds that he is supporting the presidential ambition of Senator Bukola Saraki. K1, who likened that to artifice, said he is highly disappointed that someone like the Senate President can be involved in such a fraud because it is evidently clear that the only person he is rooting for to become the president in 2019 is no other than President Muhammadu Buhari. This he has shown by telling the world where his loyalty belongs at every occasion lately. K1 has also on countless occasion granted interviews to several media organisations that he is for Buhari till 2023. According to the Fuji king, the only
time he had an encounter with the Senate President was at the marriage ceremony of Mohammed Mustapha’s son in Ilorin in 2015. So, he has no right to circulate any song without his approval; doing so amounts to fraud. K1 said he is already talking with his lawyers to seek redress on the matter. He is also using this medium to sound it clear that he will never ever endorse someone who has acted as a betrayal to his party right from when he assumed the office till the time he left the party for the opposition. “I remain a strong party member and the only person I support to become the president in 2019 is Muhammadu Buhari,” he concluded.

Tech-based revenue collection scheme to hike Edo IGR Ladesope Ladelokun
The Edo State Government has deployed its innovative technology-based revenue administration scheme which automates the entire process of revenue administration from capture, profiling, assessment generation, and notification through to cashless settlement and is set to boost internally generated revenue in the state by expanding the tax net and enhancing payment convenience for citizens. The State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, explained that the new scheme will eliminate man-made barriers and other extraneous variables that interfere with the revenue collection process. According to the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Edo Internal Revenue Service (EIRS), Mr Igbinidu Inneh, the innovative solution christened Edo Revenue Administration System (ERAS), “is being delivered as part of the strategic institutional transformation of the EIRS and feeds off the Governor’s objective to transform Edo State into an innovation hub. Inneh explained that “The ERAS solution is a distributed revenue administration system which seeks to solve the challenges faced by revenue authorities in Nigeria for Edo State.” Tagged Project Dobberman, ERAS according to the technology partners, “in every sense has been delivered in an unprecedented record time in less than 18 months from conceptualisation, partner selection to development and integration. “This is significantly ahead on time for the deployment of most Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems anywhere in the world.” The EIRS boss noted that “the current tax base which grew within weeks of testing ERAS from just about 190,000 to over 250,000, will double within the first six months of operations and to one million within two years.” On the project name ‘Dobbermann’, Mr. Inneh explained that it took its root from tax history and the strategy of Karl Friedrich Louis Dobermann, who first bred the Doberman Pincher dog breed in the town of Apolda, Germany, around 1890 as the local tax collector. He ran the Apolda dog pound and aimed to create a breed that would be ideal for protecting him during his collections, which took him through many dangerous, bandit-infested areas. “It is simple to see that ERAS has been conceived, conceptualised and developed as the technological, modern-day watchdog of government revenues.”

Nigeria’s debt profile driven by revenue challenges Mathew Dadiya The Minister of Finance, Mrs. Zainab Ahmed, has explained that Nigeria’s debt appears high because of low revenue challenges currently in the country. Ahmed, during a visit to the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) Headquarters on Friday in Abuja, stressed the importance of improving revenue generation to enable Nigeria to achieve its economic objectives. “People have raised concerns about our debt profile, but we do not have a debt problem. “Our debt ratio to GDP is still below, three per cent, which is
the threshold set by the Fiscal Reasonability Act. “What we have is a revenue problem. We don’t have the revenue to pay salaries and to meet the recurrent as well as the capital expenditure,” she said. Ahmed said the functions of the NCS regarding revenue generation were germane to the success of the Muhammadu Buhari’s administration. According to the minister, it is for this reason that the NCS is continually being pushed to improve revenue collections. Ahmed said the government had considered raising Value Added Tax (VAT) and Excise Duty as well as including more items on the Excise Duty list.
She said however that government had decided to hold on to the idea until the economic condition in the country improved. Ahmed told the Comptroller General of Customs, Col. Hameed Ali (retired), and his team, that government would look into the salary structure of the service as a way of sensitising the officers. Earlier, the comptroller general of customs highlighted some of the reforms he had undertaken in the service to improve revenue generation. Ali said the NCS had invested in training schools to improve the capacity of its officers because human development was vital.
He said the service had deployed the use of technology in blocking avenues of revenue leakages. On the challenges of the service, Ali said its poor salary structure was a huge disadvantage when compared to other revenue generation agencies like the Federal Inland Revenue Services (FIRS) and the NNPC. “An officer in FIRS earns at least three times what a customs officer earns and for NNPC, you can all imagine how much they earn. “We have lost 36 officers fighting smugglers this year. The work of the NCS is very intense, yet we don’t get enough compensation,” he said.

She says: “We must bring to life the whole essence and meaning of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in the region. Overland Airways’ LagosCotonou-Niamey flights promise passengers to top quality services across its network.” Mostly, the Lagos-Cotonou-
Niamey flights will connect traders, business people, and holiday-makers to the rich farming and livestock industry, especially the Wadata Handicraft Village that presents an assortment of leather products, and milk production in Niger Republic. The country has huge mineral resources that present business opportunities, and is home to UNESCO World Heritage Sites and other historical monuments, as well as fascinating traditional celebrations that attract international guests. The Republic of Benin is a source of agricultural raw materials and mineral resources. Its informal trade and commodity markets supported by the Port of Cotonou are fast growing in popularity among buyers and sellers on the West Coast. Lagos, the commercial capital of West Africa, with a population of about 20 million inhabitants, is the headquarters
of many international businesses in Nigeria and offers seaports that have become West Africa’s most significant importation and exportation gateways. Overland Airways, now in its 16th year of uninterrupted flight operations recently launched Lagos-Cotonou-Lome flights which operate on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays. The flights depart Lagos at 19:00, arrive Cotonou at 19:25, and depart Cotonou at 20:00 to arrive Lome at 20:30. Also, flights depart Lome at 21:00 to arrive in Lagos at 21:45. The airline operates domestic flights to several destinations in Nigeria such as Ibadan, Abuja, Akure, Asaba, Jalingo, Ilorin, etc. The airline plans to continually expand its fleet and route network across Africa, and would embrace regional and international partnerships as it expands.
As part of efforts to provide tailored services to different sections of its customer base, Union Bank recently organised a trade finance conference for its corporate customers in Lagos. The focus of the event which held at the Eko Convention Centre was to equip C-suite Executives and decision makers from large corporate organisations with market insights and opportunities they can leverage to drive growth and greater operational efficiency for their businesses. The event was also an opportunity for Union Bank to unveil its Local Letter of Credit, a variant of the standard letter of credit adapted for use in domestic trade – a first in the Nigerian banking sector. The newly introduced local letter of credit seamlessly bridges the payment gap between local buyers and suppliers, with Union Bank assuming the liability for payment to the seller. This positions the buyer more favorably, providing them with greater leverage in commercial negotiations. Also, with the local letter of credit, customers can obtain preferential conditions like extended payment days, thereby reducing working capital costs. Highlighting the critical role of trade to the growth of the economy, Emeka Okonkwo, Head of Corporate and Investment Banking at Union Bank explained that the forum was organised at this period when corporate organisations need to be able to identify and exploit opportunities for growth, following Nigeria’s recent emergence from economic recession. Speaking at the event, Mr. Okonkwo said: “The launch of our local letter of credit today is in line with our commitment to provide innovative and tailored solutions that meet the unique needs of our corporate customers. At Union Bank, we remain focused on helping our customers identify and leverage sustainable ways to build their businesses as Nigeria navigates through the economic recovery process. ” Also speaking at the event, Dr. Ozeomena Nnaji, Deputy Director, Trade & Exchange at the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) said; “We applaud the innovation of Union Bank with the introduction of the Local Letter of Credit which is one way of deepening the relationship with customers and promoting their businesses. This initiative will also help the Bank’s customers save costs and stay in business. We encourage other Banks to follow suit in providing innovative solutions to help businesses grow.”

APC, PDP primaries and future of Nigeria democracy Patrick Okohue Since the return of Nigeria to democratic rule in 1999 after many years of military rule, the nation has moved steadily to stabilise the system, it has been described severally as a nascent democracy or a fledgling democracy, the expectations has been high and despite many hiccups, things seem to have been moving towards a positive direction. This positivity in political development saw in 2015 the transition of power at the federal level from a ruling party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), after 16 years of unbroken rule to the opposition All Progressives Congress (AP), and that development which happened because of the reforms instituted in the system by the President Goodluck Jonathan administration gave many people hope that indeed politics is growing in the nation. However, the hope that many have is gradually being frittered away by the actions of the ruling APC in recent times in conjunction with the PDP, that is if recent development as it relates to the primaries of both parties is anything to write home about. There have been crises all over the place, from Kano to Delta, from Imo to Lagos to Adamawa, the situation is the same and in the process many have been killed and others maimed. Besides the killings and maiming in many states, some other states held parallel primaries, thereby producing two governorship candidates for the APC, thereby leaving the National Working Committee (NWC), like what was experienced in Rivers and Delta. For example in Bauchi State, hundreds of angry youths staged a protest in Azare, Katagum Local Government Area following the disappearance of APC register booklets for the governorship primary. The irate youths attacked a member of the House of Representatives, representing Azare, Katagum constituency, Ibrahim Mohammed Baba, in Azare at the Government Lodge in Azare town by pelting him with stones. The protest occurred when the All Progressive Congress chairman, Katagum Local government Aminu Umar Chinade and the Council chairman Alhaji Mohammed Hassan raised an alarm over the loss of APC membership registration booklets at a stakeholders meeting in Azare. It took the intervention of security agents to bring the situation under control. In Rivers State, while the faction of the APC led by the Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi produced Tonye Cole as its governorship candidate, another faction elected Senator Magnus Abe as its candidate. In Adamawa State, former chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu had to pull out of the primary because of sharp irregularities, until the national body had to intervene, making him rethink his position. The factional crisis rocking the

Delta State chapter of APC got messier with the emergence of Chief Great Ogboru and Prof Pat Utomi as the 2019 Delta State governorship candidates following the conduct of two parallel primary elections in Asaba, the state capital. Utomi and Ogboru emerged within a space of 24 hours from separate exercises held at Nelrose Hotel Asaba and Federal College of Education (Technical) at the conclusion of the two primaries. Announcing the results of the primary election that produced Utomi, the Returning Officer, Elder Favour Adibor, said that Utomi polled 2481 of the 3755 total delegates votes while Rt. Hon. Victor Ochei, Dr. Cairo Ojougbuoh and Chief Great Ogboru trailed him in that order. In another development, the presiding officer and chairman of the election panel, Gen. Lawrence Onoja, declared Ogboru as the APC governorship candidate after polling 3,292 votes of 3,515 valid votes with
Secondus
129 votes declared invalid. Ochei scored 160 votes, Utomi 26 votes and Ojougboh got 12 votes. Widespread violence due to logistics delays marred the governorship primary election of the APC in Imo state. The exercise scheduled to hold at the party’s headquarters along Okigwe Road, opposite Imo State University, Owerri and in other party offices in the respective wards and local government areas did not take place as party members turned out but could not find the materials logistics to go on with the election. One person was reported dead at Orodo ward, three buses were burnt in Amike, Mbieri all in Mbaitoli council area of Imo state. Trouble started in Amike, Mbieri when a pro-government politician, Sunny Onyegbula, believed to be in support of the candidature of Uche Nwosu, former Chief of Staff and son in-law to Governor Rochas Okorocha was confronted by his kinsmen and
dissuaded from shortlisting delegates at the polling centre, who the locals believe may be induced with money to vote for Nwosu against the aspiration of their son, the Deputy Governor, Prince Eze Madumere, who is also from the area. Police in Kano State barred the caretaker committee, loyal to former governor, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, in the PDP from conducting governorship primary election. The caretaker committee, headed by the former Secretary to State Government (SSG), Mr. Rabiu Suleman Bichi, was constituted immediately after defection of Mr. Kwankwaso, a serving senator, from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to PDP. The committee had not been able to function, following a substantive court order after dissolution of the Umar ElJibrin Doguwa-led committee by the PDP’s national body recently, who challenged the decision in court. The Police had also been ordered to stop the committee from conducting
Balogun had said at the declaration of results that anyone who will attempt to annul the results of over 1.5million Lagosians that voted in the primary is an enemy of democracy. While Lagosians were still wondering what the next line of action would be, the national chairman of the APC, Adams Oshiomhole overruled the Ebri committee and declared that indeed elections held in Lagos and before the people could recover from that, Chief Clement Ebri along with his committee members sneaked into the Lagos APC secretariat at about 6am the next morning to again read the result claiming that they collated the result.
any political event, pending a court judgement. In Kwara State, a member of the House of Representatives, Mr. Razak Atunwa, representing Ilorin/Asa Federal Constituency won the PDP governorship primary election. He defeated Sha’aba Lafiagi, the senator currently representing Kwara North, who participated in the rescheduled exercise held on Monday after eight aspirants polled out of the contest. Atunwa scored 1,555 votes while Lafiagi got 578 votes. The election was deferred to yesterday following the disruption of the exercise on Sunday . The eight aspirants that withdrew are, Bolaji Abdulahi, Ali Ahmad, Saka Isau, Ladi Hassan, Ibrahim Kaia, Zakari Mohammed, Abubakar Amani and Ahman Pategi. In all the primaries, the most dramatic was Lagos as it generated a sharp disagreement between the leadership of the party in the state and members of the Governorship Primary election committee seconded to the state by the National Working Committee (NWC to conduct the election. While the state chairman of the APC in Lagos, Hon Tunde Balogun insist that the election held across the state and witnessed by all the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), without hitches as it was free, fair and transparent, the NWC election committee chairman, Mr. Clement Ebri disagreed, saying as at the time he briefed the press at 4.15 pm, they were yet to dispatch election materials to the various local governments and so there was no way the election could have held. Balogun who spoke with newsmen earlier said the election which which held across all the local government had over 1.5million voters coming out to cast their ballot and the results sheets were endorsed by all the party agents without any controversy. His words, “I assure you that all the results were signed by agents of both parties and INEC witnessed the election and I am sure some of you witnessed it too. I want to say as the APC chairman in Lagos State that the election was free and fair and transparent. “What I got from election observers is that it was properly conducted, constitutionally done. Surely, I am happy, for the fact that the conduct of the election was seamless, free and there was no chaos, no violence and people conducted themselves well. You all saw the election that was conducted; it was conducted freely, fairly and justly,” Balogun said. But, Ebri flanked by all members of his committee including Alhaji Ahmed Mahmud Gumel, Secretary; Mr. Nze Chidi Duru; Chief Clever Egbeji; Senator Clever Ikisikpo and Ambassador Jerry Ugokwe completely disagreed with Balogun, as far he was concerned, the election was yet to hold, because of last minute adjustment to the method to adopt for the election and the inability of the chairman to provide the needed information to assist them in their work in good time.

Ugwuanyi did not manipulate results of Enugu PDP primaries - Eya Stories by Patrick Okohue A former Enugu North Senatorial aspirant on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Chinedu Eya, has called on supporters and aggrieved participants in the just concluded primary elections of the party across the state to desist from linking their inability to clinch the tickets to the governor’s influence. The PDP chieftain, who described Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi as a lover of peace and promoter of democracy, explained that the governor’s insistence on primary elections across board was to ensure that the people’s will triumphed at the end of the exercise. In a statement issued on Friday by his media aide, Gwiyi Solomon,
Chief Eya urged the aggrieved aspirants and their supporters to seek redress through the party’s internal mechanism for the resolution of complaints as the party’s door is wide open to accommodate grievances. Eya said: “The Governor Ugwuanyi we all know is a man of peace, lover of democracy and promoter of people’s interest. People should please count him out of any conspiracy in their losses. “Anybody linking him to manipulation in the just concluded primary is only on a long journey to nowhere. “I can understand there might be genuine complaints arising from the exercises, but they should know our party has an internal system capable of handling these issues.” He further enjoined the governor to continue his good work as posterity awaits him. Dabiri emerges ANRP governorship candidate in Lagos An architect, Abiodun Dabiri , has been elected the gubernatorial candidate of the Abundant Nigeria Renewal Party (ANRP) in the 2019 general elections in Lagos State through a direct primary . Dabiri, emerged having scored 70 votes, which is the highest number votes cast over Shanu Musiliu, his closest opponent, who scored 34 votes. In his acceptance speech, the governorship candidates promised to ensure that basic infrastructures that would make life easier for Lagosians are put in place, if he is elected the next governor of the state, adding that urbanisation would also be
encouraged with complementary policies. According to him, ”If voted as governor, I will review the present tax system in the state, and also build a more reliable human capital development culture.” Meanwhile, the National Secretary of ANRP, Ebere Perez, said that regardless of the pressure mounted on the party, it would continue to be a movement to bring a form of renewal Nigerians want. He called on the members of ANRP to ensure they are ready for the big tasks ahead of them, come 2019, if they really want to “take over Nigeria”.
According to Ebri, “Because of the political tension in Lagos we decided to make our approach methodical and meticulous, as party men this is more important than who get the victory, we want that at the end of the day the outcome will be celebrated by both parties, when we put a process that will be credible, what we do that will be in line with the guidelines and extant rules and the laws of this country and that is what we have done. “We are ready to go to the field and execute this and we want to do it in a very clinical fashion, so that at the end of the day we will not be accused of partisanship. Lagos is very important to us, it is the flagship of the APC and will continue to remain so for years to come and so in doing anything that has to do with Lagos or in conducting any affairs we have to do it with a very tender heart, we have to do it with a lot of circumspection, a lot of objectivity, that is what we have done and we are ready to go, to hit the ground running. “In a short while we will contact the national headquarters and brief them about how far we have gone, because just like INEC does a lot of backroom work for the main show, so much preparation goes into it, that is exactly what we have done, we are ready to give you the most credible election in the history of Lagos State in the gubernatorial primary, we will contact the national headquarters for further directives with the timing and release of materials, considering the time the time that this process is concluded. “It was not our fault at all that this exercise is taking this long, we were waiting for the state chairman of APC to provide certain information that will enable us go on with the process and we needed to be fair to both parties and that information came in about an hour ago, we have to ensure we balance the process, now that we are ready we will contact the national headquarters and we will be informed on when we are to release the materials. “Considering the terrain of Lagos and the traffic situation we will put all
that into consideration and reschedule the time when we get further directive, the materials are here, these are result sheets and not a single sheet is missing and it is not possible for this committee to do anything other than what they have been instructed to do, we have guidelines and we will follow that guideline and still try as much as possible to be fair to all parties. Responding to why they took so late in getting ready for the election, Ebri said, “Yesterday we held a stakeholders meetings and certain submissions were made and on the basis of those submissions we contacted the national headquarters and the national headquarters advised us to adjust the procedure in line with the demands. “Having done that we now had to reach out to the party representatives to send a list that will be used for the purpose of posting officials to supervise the election, those lists only arrived about an hour ago, so anything that was done without the list that we wanted wasn’t in harmony and like I told you we are more interested in harmony than anything else. “We had to wait for it, there is no way, I woke up and came here at 8.00clock and waited for 8or 9 hours without seeing anybody and you expect me to go ahead and do something, it is only fair that when you don’t see one party you have to wait, you must be patient and that is what has brought us to this point,” he said. But Balogun will have none of that as he stopped short of accusing them of being compromised, reacting to the briefing shortly after, Balogun argued that the Ebri committee cannot claim that no election took as well over 1.5million persons voted, wondering if the committee was going to disenfranchise those people. He also queried the Protea Hotel venue of the committee meeting, where they met and held the briefing instead of the party secretariat, noting that the Hotel venue, located in Alausa area of Ikeja was an extension of the governors’ office. Earlier, some APC members who are supporters of Governor Akinwunmi Ambode had accused the party of shutting them out of the
process and in some cases beating up any known Ambode supporter attempting to vote, while Comrade Olaleye Tunde, from Agege Local government said he witnessed it in his area, Mrs Oluwabunmi Adetola, from Bariga, Shomolu particularly accused the council chairman of leading thugs to beat people up and refuse to allow Ambode supporters to vote. While Lagosians were waiting for the next line of acting in accordance with what Ebri said, Balogun read the result of the election in the Acme secretariat of the party at about 10pm declaring Sanwo-Olu winner, having scored 970,851, Governor Ambode scored 72,901, of the votes cast. With the development across the country with regards to party primaries, many Nigerians are wondering what the 2019 election hold in stock for the people. Many political watchers have now commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for its efforts at ensuring tight security at elections, saying that but for the high presence of security personnel at elections, it has become evident that politicians are ready to unleash mayhem on the people in the name of coming to serve While many political watchers keep their fingers crossed as the nation match towards 2019, they have called on INEC and security agencies to wake up and put modalities in place to counter any antic that members of the political class may want to put forward in 2019.

LEGENDS the Musical: Reconnecting with the past to revive the present Theater goers in Nigeria will be treated to inspiring and spectacular stage performances when LEGENDS the Musical lights up the stage at the MUSON Center, Onikan Lagos. The musical drama is a collaborative production of ‘Seeing Through the Arts and Declassical Arts & Entertainment’ in partnership with the 22nd MUSON Festival of the Arts. In this musical revolution, five popular African heroes: Sango (Nigeria), Nana Yaa Asantewaa (Ghana), Neferneferuaten Nefertiti (Egypt), Shaka Zulu (South Africa) and Queen Amina of Zazzau (Nigeria), drawn from different African countries, must come together to save ‘Modaland’ from a common foe. Speaking with Segun Adefila, a theater veteran and artistic director ‘Crown Troupe of Africa’ as one of the lead characters saddled with the role of Sango with Segun Dada, they shed light on what the audience must anticipate at the show. Mr. Adefila noted that ‘LEGENDS’ is a unique production for so many reasons. Though, in the past few years, the genre has had rather trickling success in the country, nevertheless, there is a new sheriff in town that seeks to shake up the landscape and take the thrill a notch higher. The LEGENDS is outstanding for its masterful concern with the deeds of a-select African leaders and making their ancient, lofty achievements relevant to the 21st century African, in order to revive self-belief and reliance on their capabilities as a people. Considering your background, what makes the LEGENDS unique? First, is the approach of the producer and director; these guys are phenomenal. I have seen a couple of their works in the past, musical and then dances. For me, though my approach to theater is different, I find their approach unique because it is a huge attempt at looking where our arts should be focusing on at the moment. The idea of telling our own story in a language that can be understood by all generations. When you hear the names of these legends, they wouldn’t be strange to you. And if you are young and don’t know anything about your culture or tradition, the way the idea of the musical drama has been deconstructed makes it easier for you to appreciate and understand. There is a somewhat level of blend and that is what I think our arts should be doing at the moment-- repositioning all the materials we were given, recreating modern narratives from cultural or traditional narratives, and bearing in mind that, everything called traditional today was once innovations. These are ancient leaders; how important are their past glories in today’s modern society? All these things our young people look at and tag “old school” were innovations some years ago. ‘LEGENDS’ is placing the whole of these under a new lens for us to reevaluate and then talk about who we are. There is the metaphor in it too, a lot of humor and spectacle. Ultimately, there are plenty things to take home from all of these ideas. Man is the solution to his problems. If there is any enemy to defeat, it is you, and once you can conquer the self, then you are in control of every other thing. You become deified and gain ascendancy over everything. All of these legends we are talking about had some level of control over themselves, over the things they could do. Popular people we venerate today such as pastors, we must go and find out some of the sacrifices they made to be who they are. They dare not do the things we as ordinary humans do and this already places them on a pedestal. It doesn’t mean they are flawless either but the ideas LEGENDS tries to explore and the reason for such endeavor are interesting to me. The idea of Sango for me is one of the most contemporaries of all ideas. Let’s take it from the dance, Bata dance is a contemporary dance till tomorrow because, people keep reinventing it and it responds and never gets stuck. Basically, it is about Staccato beat and movement. Sango in today’s age and time would be the minister of mines and power because of his ability to conduct electrical energy. Mark Zuckerberg in about two thousand years from now would have
Participants at the event become a legend due to his current innovative ideas. I have not been able to place Sango or any of the legends in the past with the way the script has been treated, I can only see them through a modern eye in the light of things that confront us. A rising star in the industry, Segun Dada is quite a familiar name. In his words, LEGENDS is the best thing that has happened in a while. He plays the role of the South African warrior ‘Shaka Zulu’, and shares his thoughts and excitement in this incisive conversation. How has it been like in the rehearsal room bringing authenticity to your character? I have done some musicals in the past which were great but the first time I read this script; the idea of bringing past legends and icons, and the concept of fusing them into the present era is
fascinating. You want to know how these legends behave and of course, the story to fight one common foe is really charming. It has been good so far trying to tell the story and absorb the Zuu character. Have you found the unique accent and click sounds of the Zulu language difficult to learn? I have had to take lessons, and do researches into the character, the accent, the pronunciations, bringing all of these together into the rehearsals. Working with Gbenga and Ayo has been really good. Basically, those are the challenges; giving life to this character. I am not South African but I am doing my best to create believability. Here are three click sounds in Zulu language, fortunately, I don’t have too much of the click sounds in the
character. Learning the accent has come natural to me being an African. I am really looking forward to the audience having a swell time while we do what we like doing and bringing authenticity to these characters. I think the audience has not seen something like this before. It is a milestone and a groundbreaking effort going by the story and characters. Nigerians might have seen something on these legends individually, certainly not collectively in a musical drama and I think that is outstanding. With the music and dance orchestrated by world-class professionals like Ayo Ajayi and Gbenga Yusuf, bringing original music with popular music with singing inflection on the lines, a lot of emotions. This is packed and the audience will definitely have a swell time.
Lagos Photos: challenging ‘Time’ in the past with future focus Chris Onuoha Through its subsequent exposés from inception in 2010, the Lagos Photo festival has maintained a steady tempo of cross cultural collaboration with both local and international photographers who present explicitly, narratives of our subconscious being through macro lens. Artists around the globe have been invited to discuss, confront and wrestle with the idea of urgency the effects of ‘Time’ on our daily dealings. Each in their own way, investigate the practices of archiving, preservation, imagining the possibility of an Afro-based future, putting an end to a ‘time that is up’ or never-ending desire to reinterpret a past, laden with both nostalgia and hidden phantom. The one month long programme will include exhibitions, workshops, artist presentations, discussions, screening, and large scale outdoor installations in congested public spaces in Lagos. The show aims to provide a platform for the development and education of contemporary photography in Africa be establishing mentorship and cross cultural collaborations. It is also embodied in the exploration of historical and contemporary issues, promotion of social programmes and the reclaiming of public spaces. Interestingly, all the exhibiting artists are females but however, Charlotte Langhorst, one of the curators in response to a question at the briefing disclosed that it is not intentional with regards to gender parity. She allayed that the choice of the exhibitors is based on professionalism and contents of body if works. Charles Courdent from Alliance Francaise disclosed their happiness for partnering with Lagos photo show, describing it as the institute’s way of reaching out and collaborating with organisations in their operational neighbourhoods. However, he revealed that it is also a way of showcasing an ongoing development project the institute is embarking on. Russell Brooks from the US Consulate General stated the US commitment towards cultural understanding with Africa through arts. He stated that the US will be presenting a Naija Gems: a travelling photography exhibition created by the US Consulate General showcasing intriguing images capturing Nigerian natural beauty. Wumika Mukan, one of the curators in her curatorial overview explained the main object of the theme. She noted that the approach to the theme is very different and exciting. For Amanda Iheme whose works are architectural base disclosed the she focused on architectural photography to juxtapose a time reflection on building designs in the past and present, thus reenacting need to appreciate both times with focus on future.

CAF to use VAR in Champions League and Confederation Cup finals
The Confederation of African Football have announced that the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) will be used in the finals of both the CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup in November and December respectively. VAR was first used in Africa in February 2018, when Wydad Casablanca played TP Mazembe in the Caf Super Cup at the Stade Mohamed V, Casablanca, Morocco. “This is a historic moment for African football. It clearly shows that Caf is determined and committed to the inter-club competitions and will bring on board the latest and innovative
technologies to make it better,” Caf secretary general Amr Fahmy told Cafonline. “We are the first confederation to use VAR in the final of the club competitions. We did it for the Caf Super Cup and we are delighted to go a step further with the inter-club competitions.” The continental body has organised a preparatory course to be supervised by David Elleray, Technical Director of the International Football Association Board (IFAB) for 12 elite match officials (six referees and six assistant referees) on VAR use. The selected referees are Janny Sikazwe (Zambia),

Ghead Grisha (Egypt), Mehdi Abid Charef (Algeria), Bamlak Tessema (Ethiopia), Victor Gomes (South Africa) and Papa Bakary Gassama (Gambia). And the Assistant Referees are Emiliano Jerson Dos Santos (Angola), Zakhele Siwela (South Africa), Jean Claude Birumushahu (Burundi), Anouar Hmila (Tunisia), Abdelhak Etchiali (Algeria) and Mahmoud Abo El Regal (Egypt). Enyimba are the only Nigerian team left in any of the two CAF interclub competitions. Enyimba could reach the final of the CAF Confederation Cup if they overturn a 1-0 deficit at Casablanca, Morocco against Raja Casablanca on October 24.
D’Tigress move up 15 places in latest FIBA ranking Nigeria’s senior women’s basketball team, D’Tigress are the biggest movers in the latest FIBA World Ranking released on Friday. The reigning African Champions, D’Tigress, moved up 15 places from 34th to 19th. The Otis Hughley’s girls have also retained their second place in Africa behind Senegal who are now ranked 17th in the world. D’Tigress amassed 76.6 points as the second best team in Africa. Belgium, China, Japan and Latvia are the other countries who moved up in the latest ranking just as the D’Tigress. D’Tigress finished as the eighth best team at the just concluded 2018 FIBA Women’s World Cup in Tenerife Spain, where they won three games and lost four.
Angola dropped to third position in Africa and 20th in the world ranking, churning 75.6 points. Mozambique dropped two spots to fourth place to be ranked 27th best team in the world while Mali lost two spots to finish as the fifth best team in Africa and 40th in the world. Other countries in the African top ten are Cameroon (43rd in the world), Cote D’ Iviore (53rd in the world), Egypt (55th in the world) Guinea (61st in the world) and Democratic Republic Of Congo (65th in the world). In the world ranking, USA remains the top team and they are followed by Spain, Australia, France and Canada in the top five. Turkey, China, Serbia, Brazil and Japan completes the top ten.
FIFA suspends Sierra Leone FA Gianni Infantino: I did not betray Michel Platini due to government interference Fifa has suspended Sierra Leone ‘with immediate effect’ due to government interference in the running of the country’s FA. The ban comes after the Anti-Corruption Commission barred SLFA president Isha Johansen and general secretary Christopher Kamara from SLFA offices. “The suspension will be lifted once the SLFA and its recognised leadership have confirmed to Fifa that the SLFA administration, premises, accounts and communication channels are under their control once again,” Fifa said. The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) says that under Sierra Leone law, both Johansen and Christopher Kamara must vacate their posts until their case on corruptionrelated charges concludes. Both Johansen and Kamara have denied any wrongdoing.
Gianni Infantino has told L’Equipe he “didn’t jump at the chance” to take advantage of corruption allegations against Michel Platini when he replaced his former UEFA boss in the race to be FIFA president. Infantino succeeded the disgraced Sepp Blatter in 2016 after Blatter had left the post following revelations of impropriety including a “disloyal payment” of more than two million Swiss francs to Platini. Blatter and Platini were cleared of corruption but banned from football activities, and Infantino — who had been appointed as UEFA general secretary by Platini — stepped up when the European body asked him to be its candidate after the allegations against Platini. “I didn’t jump at the chance,” he said in an email exchange with the French newspaper. “Up until then,
the idea of being a candidate for the FIFA president had not entered my head.” Infantino denied he had helped bring about the downfall of his boss in order to step into the breach, stressing that he had asked for and received Platini’s blessing to run. “I didn’t call him, I went to see him in person with a UEFA vice-president,” he wrote. “We talked about the situation, about my candidacy and the fact that I would withdraw the minute his situation was cleared up. “I came to ask his opinion and for his green light. He gave me that.” Infantino added that he could not see how Platini could have felt betrayed. “Frankly, no. I understand that in certain situations he had the reflex of looking for those responsible, but that shouldn’t prevent him seeing clearly,” he wrote.
“Before that payment from Joseph Blatter was revealed, I was — along with others — in the middle of preparing Michel’s campaign for the FIFA presidency. “That news came like the sky crashing down on our heads, as they say in Asterix. We were devastated, me as much as the others. “And to be very clear, I’m not happy with Michel’s situation — it has never made me happy. But that’s no reason to imply motive and have conspiracy theories, produced with no proof.”

Alex Iwobi: Arsenal players want Aaron Ramsey stay Alex Iwobi has revealed that Arsenal players want Aaron Ramsey to continue his stay at the Emirates. The 27-year-old joined the Gunners in 2008 from Cardiff City and has made 241 appearances for the side, scoring 36 goals. The Wales international is in the final year of his contract but discussions between his representative and the board of the club have not been successful. Manchester United, Liverpool as well as Italian giants Juventus are thought to be interested in securing his signature should he decide to leave the North London outfit. However, the Nigeria international who stated his admiration for the midfielder hopes he can reach an agreement with the board. “He’s a great player. When I was breaking into the first team, I always used to watch and learn things from him. I am
still doing that today,” Iwobi told BT Sport. “It would be a great miss if he goes but hopefully he can stay. We all want him to stay. Hopefully it can get
sorted.” Ramsey has won three FA Cup titles and two community Shield trophy. He was named Arsenal Player of the Year on two occasions.
AFCON: Algeria recall Hoffenheim striker Ishak Belfodil Algeria coach Djamal Belmadi has recalled Hoffenhei, striker Ishak Belfodil and Napoli’s Adam Ounas to play Benin in Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. Both played just one international last year and have not made an appearance for Algeria in 2018. The only locally-based player in the 23-man squad is Entente Setif keeper Mustapha Zeghba. He has been rewarded for his performances that have helped his club reach the African Champions League semi-finals. Nottingham Forest’s Hilal Soudani misses out through injury while there is no place on the list for Ryad Boudebouz of Spanish side Real Betis. The games against Benin on 12 October in Blida and four days later in Cotonou will be Belmadi’s first as coach
of Algeria. “I haven’t had enough time to assess everyonr so I will choose those who have more playing time at club level,” he explained said. Algeria squad: Goalkeepers: Rais M’Bolhi (AlEttifaq, Saudi Arabia), Moustapha Zeghba (Entente Setif), Azzedine Doukha (Al-Raed FC, Saudi Arabia) Defenders: Aissa Mandi (Real Betis, Spain), Ramy Bensebaini (Rennes, France), Rafik Halliche (Moreirense, Portugal), Mehdi Tahart (RC Lens, France), Djamel Benlamri (Al Shabab, Saudi Arabia), Youcef Attal (Nice, France), Mohamed Fares (SPAL, Italy) Midfielders: Nabil Bentaleb (Schalke 04, Germany), Saphir Taider (Montreal Impact, MLS), Adam Ouanas (Napoli, Itlay), Adlene Guedioura (Nottingham Forest, England), Sofiane Feghouli

Anthony Joshua’s camp makes ‘much-improved’ offer for Deontay Wilder fight Anthony Joshua’s representatives have made a “much-improved” offer for a world heavyweight title unification fight against WBC champion Deontay Wilder but so far the overtures have been rebuffed, promoter Eddie Hearn has said. The 28-year-old Joshua, who holds the WBA, IBF, WBO and IBO crowns, stopped Russian Alexander Povetkin at Wembley Stadium in September and is locked in to stage his next bout at the same venue in April next year. Wilder, who is scheduled to fight Tyson Fury in Los Angeles on December 1, labeled Joshua a “coward” at a news conference on Monday for failing to secure a bout between them. “We keep requesting these
Juventus shares hurt by Cristiano Ronaldo accusations
Shares in top-tier Italian football club Juventus fell sharply on Friday, with a trader attributing the move to rape allegations against its recently acquired star player Cristiano Ronaldo. Ronaldo, signed to Juventus from Spain’s Real Madrid in July for 100 million euros, has denied the allegations. Juventus shares fell seven per cent
by 1425 GMT. The stock is down 13 per cent since the allegations first emerged on Tuesday. Selling pressure was compounded by statements by sponsors Nike Inc. and Electronic Arts Inc., which on Thursday expressed their concern. Nike said: “We are deeply concerned by the disturbing allegations and will continue to closely monitor the situation.”
