Supreme Court affirms Oyetola’s election Adeleke congratulates Oyetola, says his ambition never a do-or-die affair Mixed reactions greet Supreme Court verdict

Andrew Orolua, Tunde Opalana, Abuja & Olaniyi Ajibola, Osogbo In a split decision of five to two justices, the Supreme Court on Friday affirmed the election of Governor Adeboyega Oyetola, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the governorship election of Osun State held in September, 2018. The Supreme Court dismissed the appeal filed by Senator Ademola Adeleke of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who has challenged the judgment of the Court of Appeal. Surprisingly, the Supreme Court, Court of Appeal and the Osun State Governorship Election Tribunal were divided in arriving at their decisions. The apex court in a majority judgment delivered by Justice Bode Rhodes-Vivour, after affirming the decision

of the Court of Appeal, went further and nullified the judgment of the Osun State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal on the grounds that the tribunal was not properly constituted on February 6, 2019 when the evidences of key witnesses that formed the major reasons for its decision was taken. Justice Rhodes-Vivour agreed with the lower court that the absence of Justice Peter Obiorah, who delivered the tribunal judgment, from the proceedings of February 6 was fatal to the case of the appellants. He noted that Justice Obiorah, according to the court’s record, was absent on February 6, 2019 when the respondents witnesses 12 and 13 – Ayoola Soji and Oladejo Kazeem – testified and tendered exhibits which the tribunal admitted in evidence. The Supreme Court held that having not attended the CONTINUED ON PAGE 3

tribunal’s sitting on February 6, 2019, Justice Obiorah did not see the two witnesses and was unable to examine their demeanour, as required and therefore, it was unlawful for the judge to have authored a judgment in which he reviewed the evidence given by the witnesses. “The writing of or the participation of the Justice P. C. Obiorah in the writing of the judgment of the lower tribunal of March 22, 2019 and delivery of same, vitiates the entire judgment,” Justice RhodesVivour held. The main issue for consideration was whether Justice Obiorah participated in the February 6 proceedings, adding that it was clear from both parties that Obiorah did not sit on that day. “Failure to sit rendered the proceedings a nullity and the Judgment suffers a fundamental error and it irredeemably affected the competence of the judgment of the tribunal,” he added. Four other justices on the panel, Tanko Mohammad, Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, Amir Sanusi and Uwani Aba-Aji agreed with Justice RhodesVivour’s judgment. However, Justices Kummai Akaahs and Justice Paul Galinje, disagreed with the lead judgment. Justice Akaahs said that Judge Obiorah alleged absence on February 6, was not resolved, adding that even if the issue was to be legally resolved, the respondents ought to file affidavit to challenge the record of proceedings of February 6. The two dissenting justices further held that the findings of the majority judgment was based on conjecture and a well articulated speculation by relying on certified true copy of the tribunal’s proceedings instead of the original record. The minority judgment also held that cancelation of election

in seven polling units of four local government areas of Osun State by a returning officer of INEC was illegal, unlawful and unconstitutional, adding that by Section 179 of the 1999 Constitution, Adeleke, who scored highest votes in the main election and fulfilled the section ought to have been declared winner of the election. “INEC is supposed to be an unbiased umpire, cancelling election by a returning officer is not allowed by law, just like using manual to cancel election is also illegal,” the justices averred. The minority judgment further accused INEC of using inconclusiveness in election to perpetrate fraud and to do what it wants to do even when it is illegal. They therefore, set aside the judgment of the Court of Appeal and declared Adeleke as winner of the election of September 22, 2018 Governorship election. Reacting to the ruling, President Muhammadu Buhari congratulated Governor Gboyega Oyetola of Osun State on the Supreme Court ruling which affirmed his victory in the state governorship election of September 2018. President Buhari, in a message by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, shortly after the apex court ruling, stated that the decision of the court lays to rest the tussle over the governorship of Osun State and removes all encumbrances on the path of the governor from fully delivering dividends of democracy to the good people of the State. Buhari commended the government and people of Osun State in allowing the rule of law to run its entire course, urging them as well as security agencies to sustain the peace. He called on the victorious governor and the ruling All Progressives Congress to be magnanimous in victory and make concrete moves towards inclusive governance as may be necessary.

The President also expresses the Federal Government’s continued willingness to partner with the State Government for the betterment of the people going forward. Meanwhile, the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2018 Osun State governorship election, Senator Ademola Adeleke, has congratulated Governor Oyetola on his victory, saying his ambition was never a do-or-die affair. Adeleke made the statement through his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, in a statement issued after the court ruling on Friday and made available to journalists in Osogbo, the capital of state. He said he has accepted the ruling of the apex court, irrespective of his feelings and perception about the verdict, declaring that “as a democrat and law -abiding citizen, I accept the ruling no matter my misgivings and wish Governor Oyetola well in the governance of Osun State. “In all circumstances, we must thank God Almighty. We gallantly fought a good fight in pursuance of a democratic cause. The ideals we fought for lives on. “Our ambition was never a do-or-die affair. We aspired to serve and deliver democratic dividends to the people of Osun State. Our ambition was altruistic. We wish Governor Oyetola the best in governance of the state.” He, therefore, expressed gratitude to his teeming supporters, leaders and members of the PDP for their profound support. However, Friday’s Supreme Court verdict reaffirming Gboyega Oyetola as Osun State governor has been greeted with mixed reactions. The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) welcomed the ruling and congratulated Gov. Oyetola and indeed, Osun State chapter of the party

They were suspended for a period of one month after they were found culpable of working against the interest on the party in roles they played in issues surrounding the appointment of Minority Leadership of the House of Representatives. The party noted the roles played by the under-listed members which resulted in the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, reading another list for Minority Leadership of the House other than the list submitted to him by our party, the PDP. Reading the resolution of the National Working Committee to journalists, party’s spokesman, Kola Ologbondiyan, said: “After

preliminary examination by the NWC, it was evident that the roles played by the above mentioned members, bordered on indiscipline, insubordination and disobedience of party directives contrary to Section 58 (1)(b)(c) (f)(h) of the PDP Constitution (as amended in 2017), which provides that: “Subject to the provision of this Constitution, the Party shall have power to discipline any member who says or does anything likely to bring the party into disrepute, hatred or contempt; disobeys or neglects to carry out lawful directives of the party or any organ or officer of the party; engages in anti-party activities; or engages in any conduct likely to cause disaffection among members of the party or is likely to disrupt the peaceful, lawful and efficient conduct of the

Court orders interim forfeiture of $40m jewelleries allegedly owned by Diezani Alison-Madueke Peter Fowoyo, Lagos

A Federal High Court, Lagos on Friday ordered the interim forfeiture of jewelries valued at about $40 million belonging to the former Minister of Petroleum, Diezani Allison-Madueke, to the Federal Government. The jewelleries were recovered by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in homes traced to the erstwhile petroleum minister. Mrs. Alison-Maduekeis believed to be in the United Kingdom where she is also being investigated for money laundering offences. She has forfeited several properties linked to her to the Federal Government since the EFCC commenced investigations into her activities as petroleum minister. Justice Nicholas Oweibo made the order on Friday after granting an ex parte motion application brought before him by the EFCC prosecutor, Rotimi Oyedepo. In the application, the EFCC said the expensive items, comprising wristwatches, necklaces, bracelets,

Diezani Alison-Madueke bangles, earrings and more, were reasonably suspected to have been acquired with proceeds of unlawful activities of the former minister. Amongst the items recovered were expensive bangles -419; expensive earrings -304; expensive necklace - 267; expensive rings -315; expensive wristwatches -189; expensive necklace and earrings -174; expensive bracelets -78; expensive brooch - 77; expensive pendants - 74; expensive necklace

The anti- graft agency also sought an order directing the publication in any national newspaper, the interim order for Mrs. Alison-Madueke or anyone interested in the properties to appear before the court within 14 days. FG gives full backing as Air Peace commences flight services to Dubai The Federal Government has lauded Nigerian carrier, Air Peace, for expanding its flight operations to Sharjah-Dubai in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Mr. Sabiu Zakari, Permanent Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Transportation (Aviation), gave the commendation on Friday at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, to flag off the inaugural flight of Air Peace to Dubai. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) aviation correspondent reports that the airline’s first long-haul flight has been scheduled to depart at 8.00 p.m. to arrive Dubai at 5.00 a.m. on Saturday. Zakari, represented by Mr. Hassan Musa, Director of Air Transport Management, said the government would continue to support Nigerian airlines for them to sustain their operations. “We are proud of you. The government on its own will continue to assist domestic airlines. “We have gotten waivers on aircraft spares and also opened a special foreign exchange window for them

which shows the commitment of government to our carriers.” According to Musa, the government is ready to approve new international routes for domestic airlines and assist them in liaising with foreign governments through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The Chairman of Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON), Capt. Nogie Meggisson, said that Air Peace had made a bold move with the expanding of its services to the UAE. “As we move to the next level, I want to call on Air Peace to keep the flag flying and represent us as a flag carrier that we have been clamouring for. “The Federal Government should also protect Air Peace from international aero-politics for them to be able to sustain the route,” Meggisson said. The Chairman of Air Peace, Mr. Allen Onyema, thanked Nigerians for their patronage, which he said, had made the company the largest airline in West Africa within four years of operations. Onyema noted that the entry of

the airline into long-haul services would end the exploitation and shortchanging of Nigerians by foreign airlines. “A six-hour flight from Lagos to Europe costs more than an 11-hour trip from Johannesburg to the same destination. “So, we want to put an end to the exploitation of our people. We want Nigerians to know that patronising us instead of our competitors will put back their money into the country’s economy. “We are optimistic that even if our competitors begin to drop their fares that Nigerians will be wise to stick with us,” Onyema said. NAN reports that Air Peace has scheduled to operate flights on Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays to Dubai while Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays would be for flights back to Lagos. The airline is currently the only Nigerian carrier operating on the lucrative Lagos-Dubai route, following the suspension of flight services on the route by Medview Airlines in March 2018.

According to him, some of the offences contravene Sections 419, 390(9) of the Criminal Law of Ogun State, 2006.

Dominion Chapel consecrates Hope John Praise as first female Bishop Our correspondent

Dozens of bishops, pastors and other ranking men of God on Friday converged at the Garki headquarters of Dominion Chapel International Church to witness the consecration of senior pastor, Dr. (Mrs.) Hope John Praise, as a bishop, making her the first woman to rise to such exalted position in the church. The consecration which began at exactly 10 am with opening prayer and praises/worship was conducted by Archbishop John Praise Daniel, the founder of Dominion Chapel International and husband of the newly consecrated bishop who was supported by Archbishop Zakka Avong Bonet. In his message preparatory to the consecration, Archbishop John Praise Daniel called on Nigerian leaders both in government and in the church, to imbibe and preach unity among the citizenry, admonishing the citizens to love humanity.

“Nigerians now live in fear, and people are not sure of themselves any more unlike before when Christians and Muslims wined and dined together,” he lamented. According to him, a bishop in God’s holy church is called to be among those apostles in proclaiming Christ’s resurrection as well as interpreting the gospel to testify to God’s sovereignty as lord of lords and king of kings. After her consecration, Bishop Hope John Praise said Nigeria needs more prayers, adding that Christians are called to obey the law. She advised women to always be submissive to their husbands, saying that even though she has been made a bishop, she will still work under her husband’s instructions. Also speaking, Archbishop Zakka Avong Bonet, who ministered during the event, said that a bishop is supposed to be blameless by living a life that is worthy of the calling of God. Other men of God at the occasion include Bishop

Bishop Hope Samuel Ocheja, the Secretary of the International Leadership Conference of Ministries (one of the several outreaches under Archbishop John Praise Daniel),

Bishop S.J. Wakili Power, Bishop Chuka Agwuegbo, Bishop David F. Zaky, Bishop Deborah Adesanya and Pastor Moses Shekari, among many others.

by the party came at a time the members were out of Abuja. “I am to Inform you that the House Minority Leader. Hon. Ndudt Elumelu and other Members invited are currently out of Abuja. Notwithstanding, I have notified him and Other Members about the letter of invitations and they requested that l notify you about their absence from Abuja,” said the letter by his Elumelu’s aide. Hon. Elumelu and other members invited regretted any inconvenience caused by their absence not to attend the meeting with NWC They therefore, requested that the meeting should be rescheduled for either Thursday July 11 at 1.30pm or Friday July 12 at 4:00 pm. The PDP on the other hand slammed the Speaker, House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, for what it described as unlawful foisting of minority leaders on the House

of Representatives and lawless threat on Hon Kingsley Chinda. The party expressed shock and dismay on how Gbajabiamila, in open chamber, jettisoned all parliamentary procedure to make hate statement, inciting comment and direct threats to the bona fide Leader of the Minority in the House, Hon Kingsley Chinda, for no justifiable reason. “Hon. Gbajabiamila, in open chamber, exhibited personal hostility, with threats that Hon. Chinda will ‘regret’ taking his rightful seat as the bona fide Leader of the Minority in the House. “This vicious outburst by Hon. Gbajabiamila is a direct threat and affront to our democratic order, the rights of the minority members in the House of Representatives, the people of Obio/Akpo Federal Constituency and sensibility of millions of members of the PDP who nominated Hon. Chinda as minority leader. “The PDP, in the strongest terms, condemns this outburst

and demands that the Speaker retracts his inciting threats against Hon. Chinda within the next 24 hours. The PDP also invites the Police and the Department of State Services (DSS) to summon Gbajabiamila to explain the intents of his threats. “Our party further invites Nigerians to hold Hon. Gbajabiamila directly responsible should any harm suddenly come to Hon. Chinda, any member of his family or any member of the PDP in the House of Representatives. “It is indeed unfortunate and completely condemnable that Hon. Gbajabiamila is turning the chamber of the House of Representatives into a theatre of avoidable conflicts just because of his vested interest in the affairs of the opposition,” said the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, in a statement Friday. PDP National Chairman, Prince Uche Secondus said all the organs of the party are united after consultation to affirm that Hon.

Chinda is PDP’s choice minority leader. He said both the National Working Committee (NWC) and the Board of Trustees (BoT) met earlier on Friday to reaffirm that the party is one and united on the decision to suspend the erring members. Secondus said: “This (Friday) afternoon, members of the NWC and Chairman of BoT representing other members of BoT met and reaffirmed that the party is one, united and working hard to recover our mandate at the courts. “And on the issue of the leadership of the House of Representatives, the minority leadership, we want to reiterate that the party and the BoT is united, that in consultation with members of PDP and other minority parties, that Hon. Kingsley Chinda is our minority leader and all the other positions as we have communicated to the Speaker House of Representatives.

AWB condemns attacks on women, calls for resignation of Sen Abbo Ladesope Ladelokun African Women on Board (AWB), a non-profit dedicated to reshaping the future for African women and girls, has condemned the behaviour displayed in a recent viral video of a lawmaker attacking a woman in Nigeria and called for a greater societal shift in culture across the continent. The clip of Senator Abbo showed him in a shop, assaulting a woman beside the cash register, while flanked by other men who were reticent to intervene and stop the attack. In the wake of the public reaction to the video, Senator Abbo issued an apology. “Given the appalling

behaviour displayed in the footage, is an apology enough? Shouldn’t we demand more from our elected officials to send a clear message that abuse of any form is unacceptable, no matter who carries it out?, the group asked. AWB identified the behaviour as utterly disgraceful, adding however that the overarching culture which allows violence against women to thrive is even more deplorable. “The continent as a whole can only move forward if we take time to reflect on how we are holding women back and physically keeping them in harm’s way,” said AWB Founder and Chair, Dr. Nkiru Balonwu. The AWB while noting that the Nigerian Senate has ordered a two-week probe into

the incident, it wondered “if the situation were reversed, would the Senate hesitate to call for the woman’s arrest? Aren’t the woman’s account and the video sufficient evidence of what transpired? We cannot wait two weeks! The evidence is clear and the next steps are unquestionable. Senator Abbo must resign. “The role of the bystander must be challenged. Ask yourself. Are my silence and inaction making me complicit in the abuse and brutalisation of another? Allyship on behalf of women requires that we the people speak out and stand up in the immediate,” said Dr. Balonwu. The group also noted that Busola Dakolo recently faced backlash following her account of being

raped by Pastor Biodun Fatoyinbo, adding that this demonstrates the nature of victim-blaming in our culture, wherein the integrity and veracity of the survivor’s story is debated. AWB laments: “Who will stand up for our women? Where are the men who will protect the agency of our women and defend the space for them to be unapologetically female?” In the larger movement that AWB has launched to advance the causes of African women, the organisation is making demands for allies, particularly of all males. “Men: you are our Fathers, Brothers, Husbands and Sons; we need you on the frontlines. We cannot right societal wrongs without your support.”

Supreme Court affirms Oyetola’s election Continued from page 1 for successfully defending his legitimate mandate. National Publicity Secretary of APC, Lanre Issa- Onilu, in a statement, said the ruling now cements the majority status of progressive governors in the country. He said: “Undoubtedly a closely- contested election, we commend the apex court’s decision which is in tandem with the choice of the Osun State electorate who voted for continuity and our party’s Change Agenda. “The ruling will now allow the Governor Oyetola-led APC administration in Osun State focus on the core business of governance and implementing the many pro-people developmental plans for the state.” The APC sought the cooperation of all stakeholders in the state, particularly the political actors to support the Governor Oyetola administration in its bid to develop the state. In his reaction, the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan congratulated the Gov. Oyetola over his victory and urged him to be magnanimous in victory. Lawan, in a statement by his Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Mohammed Isa, described the judgement as victory to democracy, the All Progressive Congress (APC), the Governor and people of Osun State. He charged Oyetola to put behind him past events during the electioneering and its aftermath litigation, and concentrate on tackling the challenges facing the state. He urged him to run an allinclusive government where everybody in the state will be carried along for the betterment of the State. Lawan said: “Your victory is a great joy and achievement for our party. We are delighted that after a long legal battle, Osun State can finally settle down for good governance. “My advice to you as you champion the course of governance in the state is to see every indigene of the state as equal partner and stakeholder in driving the wheel of progress. Let your reign be exceptional by being magnanimous and focused.” The Senate President called on the people of the state to give maximum support and cooperation to the governor for the interest and progress of the state. “Now that the legal battle is over, let us come together and embrace one another in the general interest of the State,” he said. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) whose candidate, Senator Ademola Adeleke’s hope was dashed, expressed shocked at the ruling. Describing the ruling as contentious, the party said the fact that the Supreme Court had a split judgment also speaks

volumes on its verdict. The party’s position was contained in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan. He said: “Our study of the judgment however shows that the Supreme Court did not negate the position of the PDP and millions of Nigerians that our candidate, Sen. Ademola Adeleke won the election, but based its verdict on reservations over issues of technicalities arising at the election petition tribunal. “Nevertheless, our party stands with overwhelming majority of Nigerians on that undeniable fact that the people of Osun State, by the votes cast at the poll, preferred Senator Adeleke as their governor. “The PDP as a law-abiding party, however, urges the people of Osun State to remain united, calm and not lose hope in our democratic process and the quest for a government that truly represents their wishes and aspirations.” Meanwhile, PDP presidential candidate who is presently at the tribunal to challenge the election of President Muhammadu Buhari, gave courage to Adeleke, promising to stand by him. Atiku said: “I join with people of goodwill all over Nigeria to say to Senator Ademola Adeleke, and the people of the great state of Osun, that we stand with them in good times and in difficult days. “The Supreme Court has ruled and because of its judicial finality, the legal case is over. However, the love, acceptance and endorsement that the people of Osun bestowed on both Senator Adeleke and the Peoples Democratic Party is not over and cannot be overlooked. “Those who think this is the end of the road for Senator Adeleke and the Peoples Democratic Party in Osun, are greatly mistaken. This is not the end. Not even the beginning of the end. No. Today marks the continued ascendancy of Senator Adeleke and his party in the hearts and minds of his people. “They had expected that the progress and development that the Adeleke family had consistently brought to Osun will be translated to their governance. That hope is not dead, but only delayed. “I extend my right hand of brotherhood to Senator Adeleke in all his future endeavours and I assure the good people of the state of Osun that the Peoples Democratic Party remembers their love and acceptance and will never forget to stand by them no matter the situation.” The former vice president urged the nation’s judiciary to take a pulse of the nation and reflect it, stressing that God has placed a great responsibility on the hands of the judiciary. He said the judiciary holds it a duty to ensure that justice is done, irrespective of the pressure to do otherwise, by the powers that be.

NAPTIP to open register for rapists Short News in strategic public places FCTA blows hot over demolition Doosuur Iwambe, Abuja

The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons and other related Matters (NAPTIP) has said it would open a register in strategic public places to display names of culprits convicted of rape and other form of abuse against women and children in Nigeria. Speaking while addressing a news conference in Abuja on Friday, NAPTIP Director-General, Julie Okah-Donli expressed grief over the alarming spate of mindless abuse of children, rape and other forms of violence against persons in the country. Reacting to the rape allegation against a prominent pastor and the case of assault of a nursing mother by a senator, the NAPTIP boss said that the register when opened would shame perpetrators of such wicked crimes as well as serve as deterrent to other people with the intention of committing such crimes.

“We are going to name and shame those who have been found to be culprits for this crime against children wherever they are located. If you are found wanting on any crime, the register had been set up and your names will be contained in that register. “The spate of mindless abuse of children, rape and other forms of violence against persons has assumed an alarming dimension and concerted efforts must be made to minimize the development. “Suffice to say that the effects and consequences of rape and sexual violence are too huge for any society to bear. Apart from the fact that many of the victims have met their untimely death in the process, a good number of such victims have been incapacitated while others have continued to nurse the psychological and emotional wounds inflicted on them even as they resign to fate in their silence. “On our part, NAPTIP views rape and other forms of violence against persons as heinous crimes that must

be seriously frowned against and allow the provisions of the law to take its course, no matter the person involved. It is important, to say that the perpetrators of sexual violence and rape are the worst enemies as they sometimes kill the victims in order to cover up their crimes,’’ she said. Okah-Donli called on the Nigerian Governors’ Forum to domesticate the Violence Against Persons Prohibition Act, to address nagging issues relating to sexual violence happening in states throughout the federation. NAPTIP also called on the society and precisely, children passing through similar situations to speak out and report to the appropriate agency for prompt response. “Children who are victims of sexual violence and rape should defy any threat and open up, and I assure them that succour will come their way. Parents and teachers should keep their eyes on their children and wards by ensuring that they are in safe hands,” Okah-Donli added.

of buildings on waterways Ukpono Ukpong, Abuja

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has vowed to make true its decision to demolish buildings constructed on waterways which have contributed to the recent flooding experienced in parts of the nation’s capital. Recall that the FCTA had recently issued a two –weeks- ultimatum to residents of Ipent-5 Estate in Lokogoma District, Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) whose buildings are along waterways and road corridors to vacate the areas. FCT Permanent Secretary, Chinyeaka Ohaa had explained that the buildings to be removed by the administration after the ultimatum are structures built on 20 meters from both sides of the river, adding that the buildings along the waterways and road corridors in the estate are the major cause of the perennial flooding in area. Ohaa while receiving the members of Lokogoma District Residents and Owners Association in his office maintained that there is no going back on the plan to demolish all the structures obstructing the free flow of water in the area to avoid further loss of lives and properties to flood. He also warned that the FCTA will not fail to punish any of its staff (past or present) found to have colluded with any estate developer to approve any illegal building that is not in line with the building master plan approved for any estate. While empathising with house owners will be the first party to bear the brunt, he however, promised that compensation will be paid for buildings built with approval from the administration. He noted that any building without approval due to developer’s violation of approval will be demolished and the developer forced to pay compensation to the off takers (house owners). “All the houses and infrastructures on the waterways obstructing the free flow of water must give way. The developers that violated their approval will be brought to book, including our staff that colluded with them,” asserted. Chairman, Lokogoma District Residents and Owners Association, Joseph Nnorom, appealed to government to conduct a proper investigation to ensure those found wanting are brought to book as the off- takers should not be left to suffer from the negligence of others. He said that due verification was carried out from government agencies before they began the construction of any structures. Speaking further, he also blamed the government for the illegal structures noting that the building of such structures was supervised by government agencies.

Abuja residents demand justice for 4-yr –old rape victim

Residents of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja on Friday demanded justice for a four-year -old who was allegedly raped by the family’s cook, 28-year -old Ebiloma Idris. Nollywood actress, Tonto Dikeh led the protest of Abuja residents to the Apo High Court where the case was brought for trial. Dike said that the protest is aimed at raising voices and a call for justice for the minor who was allegedly raped by Idris in 2016. The actress and singer said it was shocking that the alleged rapist was being protected by the father of the minor, adding that the mother of the minor has tendered all evidences and medical reports which showed there was a rape situation. She quoted the mother of the minor as saying she was hoping the court in its final judgment would grant justice to the minor. Dikeh said that the accused, Idris should be given a maximum sentence when found guilty to serve as a deterrent to others who perpetuate such heinous crimes as child molestation. The actress said that she would continue to lead the move for justice for the minor whose father has failed to support the mother in the case, but has rather taken the sides of the alleged rapist. Dikeh said that the adjournment of trial to October 3, will give ample time for the prosecution to tender all evidences and witnesses to the case to prove that there was rape. Also speaking, Ayisha Yesufu, co-convener of the Bring Back our Girls (BBOG) group called for fair prosecution and justice delivery which should not come as a result of outcry on social media. She explained that in this case, the mother of the minor had reported the case to the police, but they failed to act immediately and were also concealing some evidences from the court. “What the mother has been crying out for is that a lot of evidences that are supposed to be put in place have not been put in place as she alleged that the police are leaving out a lot of loopholes in this case. “This case is painful one and it took an entirely different dimension because I have never seen a case whereby the father of the victim is the one defending the alleged rapist, getting legal counsel for him,” Ayisha added. According to her, the instrument of justice must be used on every Nigerian, insisting that “justice is not for sale and is not for the highest bidder and we must insist on that. “Like the case of Sen Elisha Abbo, the police did not do anything after he was reported since May 14 until there was an outcry on social media. This is what is playing out in this case again because the minor’s mother had written severally, but nothing was done, she is also being threatened.”

On the Dadin Kowa Dam project, the governor revealed that the water scheme has been resuscitated, saying that 40 million litres of water was being pumped daily for domestic consumption in Gombe and its environs.

Lagos, Britain partner on water transport, smart city Benjamin Omoike, Lagos The British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Ms. Catriona Laing on Friday met with Lagos state Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, to discuss bilateral partnership which focused on three key areas of technology-driven water transportation, investment and the smart city initiative. The governor, his deputy, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, received the British envoy and her entourage in his office for the bilateral meeting which was held behind closed doors. The envoy said the meeting was necessary as it was in continuation of a dialogue with state government on areas of partnership. Addressing reporters after the meeting, Ms. Laing said discussion with the governor and his deputy focused on strategies to be adopted by the state government and private sector partners to enable Lagos realise its aspirations to be a leading city in technology and innovation on the continent. “There are three topics in particular that we discussed. The first is around the governor’s vision and how the United

Kingdom can support Lagos to achieve that vision. Technology is changing the world. Lagos is one of the few citystates in Africa that is well positioned to take advantage of the fourth industrial revolution around innovation, robotics and artificial intelligence. “The governor is very clear on achieving this objective. He said his job is to provide necessary infrastructure, particularly power and broadband. At the back of that, the private sector will come in and support in that aspiration,” Ms. Laing said. The envoy said there was discussion around the African investment summit holding in London next January in which 20 African countries, including Nigeria would be participating. The summit, she said would come with significant benefits for Lagos because of unrestrained access to investors and finance. She said the summit would offer a platform for Nigeria to rebrand itself by convincing some of the investors on how it is solving some of its challenges, especially in security and infrastructure. Ms Laing said the UK would be willing to support Lagos specifically,

in two key areas of harnessing the waterways for efficient transportation and digital inclusion which are the hallmarks of smart cities. She said: “There are two specific projects we are helping Nigeria to achieve in Lagos. One is around future cities which focus on how Lagos could use its waterways. The second is around digital inclusion bearing in mind that Lagos is an innovation hub. We want to ensure that there is inclusive approach to technology and training people to take advantage of the opportunity.” The envoy described the meeting with Gov. Sanwo-Olu and his deputy as rewarding, noting that the British High Commission would be looking forward to achieving the goals with the state government. Man, 30, on trial for allegedly defiling 5-year-old girl

A 30-year-old man, Abednego Jacob, who allegedly defiled his neighbour’s five-year-old daughter, has been docked at an Igbosere Magistrates’ Court in Lagos. The defendant, whose residential address was not given is facing trial on a charge of unlawful sexual intercourse. Police prosecutor, Peace Chukwudi, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on June 29 at Mekuwen Street, Ikoyi, adding that Jacob unlawfully had sexual knowledge of the five-year-old girl by inserting his finger in her vagina. Chukwudi said that the defendant went to the residence of the girl when her parents were out and defiled her. According to her, the offence contravenes Section 261 of the Criminal Law of Lagos state, 2015. The defendant’s plea was, however, not taken. Chukwudi therefore, urged the court to remand the defendant in prison pending the legal advice from the director of public prosecutions in the state. The Magistrate, Mrs. K. O. EFCC tenders 108 cheques used by Short News constitutes task force to tackle Fani-Kayode, others in N4.9bn fraud FAAN airport gridlock Peter Fowoyo

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has tendered 108 cheques allegedly used by Femi FaniKayode and others in the alleged N4.9 billion fraud case before a Federal High Court, Lagos. Fani-Kayode, a former minister of aviation alongside Nenadi Esther Usman, a former minister of finance, Danjuma Yusuf one time chairman, Association of Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON) and a company, Joint Trust Dimensions Limited are been tried before the court. They are facing a 17 -count charge bordering on conspiracy, unlawful retention of proceeds of theft and money laundering before Justice Rilwan Aikawa. Fani-Kayode, who was the director of publicity of ex-President Goodluck Jonathan’s presidential campaign organisation for the 2015 election was accused of conspiring with the others to directly and indirectly retain various sums which the EFCC claimed they ought to have reasonably known were proceeds of crime. The defendants were accused of conspiring among themselves to indirectly retain the sum of N1. 5billion and indirectly, retaining N300million, N400million and N800million respectively, all proceeds of

corruption according to the EFCC. Also, the former minister was accused of directly using parts of the money at various times, including N250million which he allegedly used between March 20 - 25, 2015 and of making a cash transaction of N24million with one Olubode Oke, said to still be at large on February 12, 2015. The duo were said to have made the transaction without going through any financial institution, an act the EFCC claims is contrary to Sections 1(a) and 16(d) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) (Amendment) Act, 2012 and punishable under Section 16(2)(b) of the same Act. The defendants pleaded not guilty to the charge. When the matter came up, an EFCC investigator, Shuaibu Shehu, while being led-in-evidence by the prosecutor, Rotimi Oyedepo, tendered 108 Zenith Bank cheques which he told the court were recovered in the course of investigation into the matter. The cheques were subsequently, marked as exhibit 11(1-108). The EFCC witness when asked by the prosecutor, who was the beneficiary of the cheques, answered that 103 of the cheques showed the names of Fani-Kayode, adding that the cheques were drawn from the second defendant’s account with the bank. “100 cheques were of cash withdrawal and 96 of the cheques were withdrawn from the account of the second defendant,” the

witness stated. Upon the conclusion of the witness evidence-in-chief, the prosecutor sought to tender in evidence all the Ministry of External Affairs’ Statement of accounts, account documents package and certificate of identification for admissibility, but the move was objected by the defendants’ counsel. In urging the court to reject the documents, counsel to Usman, Yussuf and Jointrust Limited, K. C. Nwofor, who stood in for Chief Ferdinand Orbih (SAN), told the court that the documents are not legible, just as Fani-Kayode’s counsel, Norrison Quakers (SAN), urged the court to reject the documents as it fails to meet the provision of Section 84 of the Evidence Act. He said the current law is that a computer generated exhibit can only be admitted by the person that worked on it. Quakers said the only person who can tender the exhibit is Eyituoyo Mogbetern, the Zenith Bank’s Compliance Officer. He added that the witness is not in position to tender the documents as he is not a staff of the bank. Meanwhile, Justice Aikawa, has adjourned the matter till October 29, for ruling on the documents sought to be tendered and continuation of trial. The Judge also granted Nenadi Esther Usman’s application for bail variation, to enable her travel abroad for medical trip.

The Chief Whip of Osun state House of Assembly, Tunde Olatunji, has commended the federal government for suspending the Rural Grazing Area (RUGA) policy. Olatunji of the All Progressives Congress (APC), representing Ife-North, who made the commendation while speaking with newsmen in Osogbo, said the suspension was a confirmation that the APC-led government was responsive, responsible and accountable to Nigerians. The lawmaker also said that the suspension would enable the government to throw the policy into the public space for more engaging discussion with Nigerians. According to him, a large number of Nigerians have expressed their displeasure with the purported introduction of the policy due to their little knowledge and information about it and the volatile nature of ethnic suspicion in Nigeria. Olatunji noted that after developing an acceptable modern cattle rearing/ grazing solution, it was also extremely important to complement with effective measures to address environmental factors. He said environmental factor like the drying up of Lake Chad, growing desertification and other human activities that had over the years become enablers of the serious crises should be considered. “We cannot move forward as a nation if we continue to hold ourselves back with primordial sentiments of politics, religion and ethnicity. Spontaneous music is the new way I found to make music -TY Bello Singer and Renowned Photographer, Toyin Sokefun-Bello, better known as TY Bello, has sure carved a niche for herself in her two chosen fields. Prior to pursuing a solo career, she was a member of the defunct gospel band, KUSH. TY Bello is also a member of the Nigerian photography collective, Depth of Field. She is best known for her singles “Greenland”, “Ekundayo”, “This Man”, “Freedom” and “Funmise” and the most recent ‘ Logan ti o de’ with Tope Alabi. In this chat with MUTIAT ALLI, the mother of two spoke about motherhood, photography amongst others. How did you get inspiration for Logan ti o de? The song just came like waterfalls, it was effortless and easy

Of course, everyone is busy so whenever we get to connect, it’s always worth it Most of the time you carry a full hair, don’t you ever get headaches from it? If my hair was smaller I probably would lose my balance, lol, I am just used to it and it fun.

Did you expect the kind of feedback you got? Pleasantly surprised, I knew people would love it but I didn’t know people would love it like that. They took the song vey personal, it meant a lot to people because it sounded like their story. When I heard the song for the first time, I cried, so I guess everybody had the same response.

What aspect of photography do you specialize in? I’m a portrait photographer. Even though I still work in documentary and conceptual photography, my images have always been portrait, I’ve always been fascinated by the human face and I love making deep connections when I make images.

When gospel artistes come for photo session you do music with them, where did the whole concept come? Is it for fun? Is it for album? Have been doing spontaneous worship for almost three years, basically it’s a new way have found to make music. Basically following the instructions “sing a new song unto the Lord” I’m taking it literally, so I come together with other musicians and we sing songs we don’t know You are talented behind the lens but we love you for the music and you bring out music as much as we hunger for it, why? I think have found my new way, have always wanted to do it my way. I think spontaneous worship to me is more sincere and it’s more effortless in the sense that I’m not forcing things. So I think have found my space and I like it. So we can’t expect more than that from you? Never say never absolutely but we are gonna have a lot of albums coming up from

Adeniyi Johnson

the sessions. Right now we probably have like twelve albums… Are you used to being called Iya ibeji now? Absolutely, sometimes I forget it’s me and I would be looking behind me before realising that it’s actually me…. Do you sometimes look at yourself in the mirror and believe that you have two kids already?

God has been good, He has blown my mind. Every day I don’t forget, I try to remember what He has done for me constantly… Before and after being a mother for years you haven’t really changed, what is the secret? First that’s a big compliment, thank you for saying that, I guess you just keep living life and enjoy your work, your life and family

Would spontaneous worship ever see the members of KUSH coming back? You know what I was thinking about it last week, which might probably happen. A perfect platform for us to get back together because in reality that’s what we did. When we rehearsed, we sang songs we didn’t know and they became real songs How often do you guys communicate and do you miss the sisterliness?

Tell us about your passion for photography? I have always believed that creativity is a wellspring of many virtues. I’ve learnt that it’s important to never let any of the gifts you have been given go. Music and photography have been those two things that stood out to me; I think they really have a lot in common. Although photography takes a lot of my time, I make sure that I commit to spending a certain amount of time making music each year. What exactly inspired you to become a photographer? I think my inspiration for photography came first from the enjoyment I have in helping people feel beautiful. I started off as a beautician and I found it very fulfilling. I found photography a more exciting platform to explore this. I have also been greatly inspired by many of my mentors, from Jide Adeniyi Jones to Akinbode Akinbiyi and Jackie Phillips.

Big Brother Naija returns to Nigeria with a bang

….As house boasts of best of quality set up and locally sourced materials Mutiat Alli Since the announcement of the fourth edition of the Big Brother Naija was made public in January, Nigerians especially intending participants looked forward to the auditioning date across states slated for February 1&2 respectively. As usual, there were large number of people who thronged the venues of the auditions in Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, Calabar, Ibadan, Benin and Warri. The fact that it was announced that the year edition will now hold in Nigeria after some many year, tongue wagged as to the possibilities of a smooth and quality production considering the Nigeria factor. However months later, organizer again announced the opening show and trust I had a fair share of questioning the integrity of the show as to whether it will come out nice compared to the previous edition held in South Africa. Daily Times Reporter in the BBNaija House Having been selected

among the few journalists in Nigeria alongside media practitioners from Kenya, Ghana, Namibia and Zambia to have a firsthand experience of the first BBNaija House in Nigeria, my expectation was indeed high as I look forward to all the experience and instantly when we arrived at the BBNaija House, we met with the technical and production crew who explained all that have been put in place towards a successful show for not just Nigerians alone but the world at large. To feel the exact experience the intending housemates would go through, immediately we became the ‘Test-run’ housemates, went through the microphone use (Later hanged it round our neck), No wrist watch, No Mobile phones, familiarize with the show host amongst others and GBAM!! We the approach the house and once the door was opened, the sight was jaw breaking from the colour, creative paintings and art, the kitchen arena to mention amongst others. Unlike the other Big

Brother Houses; the made in Naija house is the first purpose-built facility in Africa housing all the zones in one complex. Previous facilities had the house, studio for the live shows, production and post-production units all in separate buildings and sometimes in different locations. However this new and improved BBNaija house, measures about 1800sqm with an additional 250sqm for support building services such as the sick bay, laundry and artiste lounges, was designed and built to be bigger and better than any of the Big Brother Africa or Mzansi houses Some of the unique features of the first Big Brother Naija House It is important to state here that the house was built from scratch to finish as there were multiple teams working day and night shifts for 5months. The house has 7x hand held cameras and 32 que ball cameras that will capture every activity in and outside the house.

One commendable effort of the organizer is the fact that all furniture and appliances in use in the house were locally sourced. However for quality, smooth and seamless show; the first BBNaija show in Nigeria boast of a safe back end as both the operational and technical crew makes use of high-tech equipment which include a full digital audio and video mixers Vsm IP base and a Plus 4K camera with an optical fibre transmission that achieves high image quality. And the contestants are a replica of the theme ‘Pepper Dem’ For every edition of the reality show comes a unique theme; From See Gobee to Double Wahala and there comes the 2019 theme ‘Pepper Dem’. Indeed the choice of the 21 Housemates this year is matured mind and their various entries into the opening show was definitely pepperish. A careful outline of the housemates varies from a Cop, to Banker, Lawyer, Fitness Coach, and Rapper amongst others. The contestants includes Seyi,

Tasha, Mike, Diane, Isilomo, Frodd, Ella, Khafi, Jeff, Mercy, Sir Dee, Thelma, Tuoyo, Omashola amongst others. About the grand prize Each year there is always a mouth-watering grand prize to fight for and this year is no difference as the last contestants standing walks home with a cash prize of N30m, a top of the range SUV from Nigerian automaker, Innoson Motors, trip to Dubai, a home make-over and a year’s supply of Pepsi and One Africa Fest VVIP experience, a year’s supply of Indomie noodles &Munch it, brand new Oppo mobile smartphone and a bonus prize of two VIP Tickets to watch a European Football final game LIVE, courtesy BET9ja. No Live Eviction Yet With Biggie giving housemates the privilege to get familiar with house and bond with one another, there will be no live eviction in this first week as the week commences on a lively note with different activities.

We’re not getting forex at N305/$1, oil marketers lament Michael Ajayi The Major Oil Marketers Association of Nigeria has said its members are not getting foreign exchange at N305 to a dollar for the importation of Premium Motor Spirit, also known as petrol. The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation has been the sole importer of petrol into the country for more than a year as private oil marketers stopped importation due to a shortage of forex and an increase in crude oil prices, which were said to have made the landing cost of the product higher than the official pump price of N145 per litre. Henry Ikem-Obih, the chief operating

officer, downstream, NNPC, had, during a panel discussion on Wednesday at the justconcluded Nigeria Oil and Gas Conference and Exhibition in Abuja said the forex intervention scheme, which was rolled out by the Central Bank of Nigeria and comanaged by the NNPC had been extremely successful. “Since that scheme was set up, we have received applications from marketers for $7.2bn worth of forex. In terms of actual disbursement, about 50 per cent of the applications got funding. But the truth is that the forex that came through that scheme, especially for PMS, got potential funding for the majority of the applicants and forex was available to the marketers. However, applications that came in for AGO, HHK,

ATK also got forex at N305. And so, I don’t agree that access to forex is a big issue for marketers,” he had said. But Tunji Oyebanji, the Chairman, MOMAN, who spoke on the sidelines of the event, said marketers had not resumed petrol importation as they could not access forex at N305/$1. “We don’t know who is getting foreign exchange at N305/$1. If we are getting it at that rate for petrol, we will be importing. But we are not getting it. Yes, when the scheme started, that was the plan and CBN was the one handling it. Eventually, the NNPC took over it, and we don’t know who is getting it at N305. So, maybe he can enlighten us by publishing the names of those who are getting it,” he said.

Oyebanji, who is the managing director of 11Plc (formerly Mobil Oil Nigeria Plc), said, “We are not importing PMS at all but if we want to import automotive gas oil (diesel) or aviation turbine kerosene (aviation fuel), we have to go and buy at N330 or N346. You can’t compete because the NNPC is bringing everything at N305; so, it is not a level-playing the field at all.” Asked what exchange rate would enable the marketers to resume the importation of petrol, he said, “If we were getting at N305, maybe we will be able to [import]. But again, technically, for the country as a whole, does it even make sense? In the market, your dollar is being sold at N360; so what Nigeria should be earning for every dollar is N360. That is really the market value.

NCC joins fight against State taxes after MTN, Kogi face-off Ladesope Ladelokun The fight against multiple taxations in the Nigerian telecommunications industry has received a boost from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) after the regulator condemned the tax system by State Governments. The NCC said the multiple taxations have a negative ripple effect as it spreads from the network operators to the economy. This was made known by NCC’s executive commissioner for Stakeholders Management, Sunday Dare. During the North-East Stakeholders’ Parliament meeting with relevant agencies in charge of telecommunications matters on Thursday in Yola, State Governments were cautioned against clamping down on

telecoms firms for state taxes which are said to have adverse effects. MTN Nigeria and Kogi State Government, MTN Nigeria court case, Multiple taxations in Nigeria, Tax in Lagos and Nigeria The multiple taxations hit MTN Nigeria when the Kogi State Government shut down the company’s facilities. The State had also shutdown Airtel’s property. However, MTN Nigeria insisted the Kogi State government didn’t have the jurisdiction to regulate telecommunications companies in Nigeria. The company argued that only the Federal Government and its agencies had the sole authority. Meanwhile, the shutdown resulted in MTN Nigeria instituting legal action against the Kogi State Government. The telecom company demanded N5 million in damages and a declaration that nullifies the shutdown

and declares that the parties involved did not have the power to perform such acts in the first place. While warning State Governments against multiple taxation, Dare said its repercussion could affect the growth of the telecommunication sector. He further stated that multiple taxations discourage investment in the long-term even if it generates substantial short-term revenue for the authorities. “The current practice of imposing heavy sector-specific taxes and charges on telecoms infrastructure; levying huge Right-of-Way charges and decreeing onerous regulations may appear to bring immediate revenues to the coffers of the state. But let us be clear: multiple taxation and regulation of the telecoms industry discourage investment. “They deny the government of long term

revenues and they destroy the foundation for future growth. “This is why we must all work towards win-win solutions that enable operators to roll-out fast and efficient networks which create opportunities for our citizens and develop our economies.” MTN Nigeria and Kogi State Government, MTN Nigeria court case, Multiple taxations in Nigeria, Tax in Lagos and Nigeria Telecommunication mast. He advised that instead of hitting telecoms firms with multiple taxations that could affect the expansion of infrastructures, the State governments should provide every resource network operators need in order to contribute to the country’s economic growth because of the penetration of broadband and ICT infrastructure by 10 per cent would boost national GDP by 2.5 per cent in one year.

NNPC to replace all JV projects with IJV model Michael Ajayi Having cleared the $833.57 million owed to Mobil Producing Nigeria (MPN), barely two years after it signed a cash-call Repayment Agreement with its Joint Venture (JV) partners, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) is set to introduce the Incorporated Joint Venture (IJV) model. The Corporation had paid the $833.57 million to MPN to defray cash-call arrears within a period of five years, and with the new development, it is

set to kick-start the IJV model in order to replace all the JV exploration and production projects in the country. During a panel session at the Nigeria Oil and Gas (NOG) Conference in Abuja, NNPC Group Managing Director, Dr. Maikanti Baru said the IJV model was conceptualised out of the need to encourage healthy business culture and growth in the energy sector. Baru, who was represented at the panel session by the Corporation’s Chief Operating Officer (CEO), Bello Rabiu, said the IJV model, when

implemented, would make oil and gas business more productive and beneficial to investors. Understanding IJV: As one may have thought, Incorporated Joint Ventures involve the creation of a new company through which the venture will be operated. In this regard, the parties involved in the Joint Venture will be shareholders of the new company. Thus, will appoint its directors. The company will operate the business of the JV, and will usually own or at least licence the venture’s assets. Practically, companies in this type of venture,

create a separate corporation and divide their shares among one another as an equitable way to distribute income from the Joint Venture. How laudable is this move for NNPC? Arguably, exploring the IJV model is a smart move for the Corporation. IJVs provide significantly better asset protection to the Joint Venture parties compared to the unincorporated ones. This is because the liabilities of the venture will usually be contained in, and limited to, the Joint Venture company, rather than being borne by the Joint Venturers directly.

During the presentation ceremony of the Kellogg’s Superstars awards to the 50 young winners, majority of whom were invited to Lagos recently along with their parents, Kellogg Tolaram Nigeria, makers of breakfast cereal was greatly extolled for touching the lives of the ordinary Nigerian child. This statement was made by the DirectorGeneral, Lagos Ministry of Education, Mrs Ronke Soyombo, she said “I want specifically pour encomium on the directors of Kellogg’s Tolaram imbued with rare foresight aimed particularly at making the whole child, by not rewarding pupils through scholarships but by also investing heavily in educational infrastructure, educational partnerships, literacy commitment and all other primary needs that ensures brighter opportunities for the Nigerian child”. “It is crystal clear that Kellogg’s Tolaram essay competition and reward initiative was borne out of passion and will no doubt contribute to the ever-expanding educational status of Lagos State and Nigeria” Soyombo stated. Kellogg’s Superstars contest is a schoolbased essay writing competition designed for primary school pupils to sharpen their writing skills while also bringing out the creative uniqueness in them. The Contest which began in March 2019 reached out to more than 1.8 million pupils at approximately 12,000 schools across Rivers, Lagos and Oyo State; these students were tasked to exhibit their writing talent on the topic “what makes you a Kellogg’s superstar”, after which 50 outstanding pupils emerged. The major highlight of the ceremony was when the young Kellogg’s superstars read through their essays to the audience which comprised of the parents, representatives of their schools, representatives of the Ministry of education, National Association of Private Schools and the Press, an honourable member of the Federal House of Representatives. Hon. Mrs Tolu Akande- Sadipe, Honourable House of Assembly Member said according to UNICEF, one in every five of the world’s out-of-school children are in Nigeria, even though primary education is officially free and compulsory, about 10 .5 million of the country’s children aged 514years are not in school and only 61 per cent of 6-11-year-olds regularly attend primary school. She, however, explained some of the solutions would be for government, private organisations and individuals to all come together to ensure free early childhood education (Nursery and Primary level) for the underprivileged children, promotion of scholarship programs while also training and improve teachers’ welfare. “Kudos to the management of Kellogg Tolaram for this scholarship program and its numerous other investments on educational growth” she said. Also speaking at the event was the president, National Association Of Private Schools (NAPPS), Lagos State Chapter, Mr Wasiu Adumadeyin, who equally confirmed that the impact is certainly far-reaching on the economy when corporate organizations get involved in educational support especially at this elementary stage where foundation becomes undeniably important. According to the General Manager, Kellogg Tolaram, Mrs Vani Malik, who spoke on the premise of the speech delivered by the Honourable House of Assembly Member, Hon. Mrs Tolu Akande- Sadipe presently the society is still battling with the challenge of a substantial population of primary school pupils who are out of school, Vani however, confirmed this challenge was one the major rationale which brought about the concept of the Kellogg’s Superstars scholarship by way of the brand contributing its quota to the economic growth of Nigeria.

Despite antics of APC, PDP is waxing stronger across Nigeria - Olafeso Dr Eddy Olafeso is the National Vice Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) South West. He is happy with the inroads the PDP made into the South West in the last general election, and in this interview with PATRICK OKOHUE he speaks about the performance of his party at the elections and efforts made by him and others to make the party more attractive in the South West and across the country, just as he castigated the All Progressives Congress (APC) for meddling in the election of principal officers of the National Assembly among other issues. What impression do you have about the last general election, viz a viz your party’s performance? We thank the Nigerian people and the voters for their commitment in ensuring that the PDP is not dead despite the prediction of Adams Oshiomhole and his party the APC, we rose to the challenge of defending our position with the electorate. We did everything to convince them that we are far better than the APC government. If you look at the destruction from 2015 and now, in 2015 we had less than 1.5 million people as internally displaced, now we have over five million people in IDP camp. We have over 20 million people displaced in North East, now the insurgency have moved from North East to four other zones of the country. The economy has actually been plundered, there is no hope for the common Nigerian, everything is upside down, that is exactly what the Nigerian people voted against. You can see that the number of states controlled by the PDP has increased, as at today it is16 states and we still hope to get more states. People are voting the PDP to run away from the draconian administration of the APC, and the hopelessness in the environment in the last four years. It is not a surprise to me that we did very well, because it is obvious that the nation can no longer take another four years of the APC, the election was rigged, and we are at the tribunal over the presidential election, and we are very hopeful we will secure victory. If you look at the election now, the reality of pattern of voting is coming out, you can see we have more states now, now democracy is really entrenching itself. The next step as I hope is the INEC. INEC did not prepare adequately for the completion of the complex assignment they had at hand. We should not blame INEC all alone, the political class should share out of the scenario which INEC found itself, and that exactly is what we must watch out for in the next election. The desperation, the attitude of even APC government against INEC, that they wanted to command INEC like part of their department in the APC, the party is part of the reason we have this unfortunate scenario of some election not being concluded a month after the election, the governorship election took place on the 9th of March and election of Rivers State just completed some days ago, a month after. How do you justify that under a democracy? How come election period is now like a war, that people have to die, it is rather unfortunate we lost so many lives, in the process of electing people who want to rule over the people, they go through pain and mystery and poverty in the last three and a half years, now the position of the leaders have to be filled just to go through votes, it is really, really unfortunate. I think by the time we will be writing the story of 2019, we have so many things to write concerning the feeling of that moment, and we all have a blame to share, not only INEC, political class, political parties, even Nigerians, those that did not actually raise alarm, when they see

EFCC all went to sleep, the police, the army, all the security operatives just turned a blind eye to it. We know that, their rule over the South West is over, because we will stop at nothing to ensure we route them out of here, the most sophisticated zone in terms of education advancement, and the economic nerve of the nation, and unless we take South West away from these people, there can’t be any meaningful development, we have done well. We have to thank the people of the geo political zone, they have done well, we need to thank the people of the geo political region, Oyo, Ogun, Osun, Ondo all those that committed themselves to the struggle, unfortunately in some of our states, we still need to work on some of our leaders to do better, to be united, so that in the nearest future we will be able to take the largest percent in the South West, hope is rising in the South West and the PDP is doing very, very well out here, and we need to put enough energy into ensuring we convince our people and give them the better hope for tomorrow.

Olafeso things going wrong, or those that kept silent in the face of tyranny. We all have ourselves to blame. It is unfortunate that Nigeria is not going the way it should be going, we are not where we are supposed to be, we are not actually creating a foundation for a new beginning for our nation. Well, the way things are at the moment, nobody knows what will happen in the future. The insecurity is rising, no job, the economy is going down, down, we are rated as one of the poorest nations of the world and we have been tagged as poverty capital of the world, that shouldn’t be our portion, by virtue of the gift of God under and above the soil of this great nation called Nigeria, those are the questions we must begin to ask ourselves, where are we going from here? That is one of the reasons we insisted on restructuring Nigeria, maybe we can bring back the energy of the 60’s to bear upon

our productive energy and lead Nigeria to the destiny of our growth. Despite the shenanigans your party still made an inroad into the South West, how do you feel about the development? I am excited; I am the National Vice Chairman of the party in the South West. I thank God, it is a reflection of the energy and hard work we put on our job. We said it to all of you at the beginning that we are ready to work, and we are ready to take the pain that is associated with working hard, to convince the people that the government in power is bad for them, and the Tinubu dynasty has been punctured, it is ineffective and it is associated with corruption, and on the eve of the presidential election, the man drove two bullion vans into his premises in Bourdilion and nobody raised an eyebrow, DSS,

You can see that the number of states controlled by the PDP has increased, as at today it is16 states and we still hope to get more states. People are voting the PDP to run away from the draconian administration of the APC, and the hopelessness in the environment in the last four years. It is not a surprise to me that we did very well, because it is obvious that the nation can no longer take another four years of the APC

As the national vice chairman of the PDP South West, what are you doing about the crisis rocking the Lagos State chapter of the party, I mean the faceoff between your governorship candidate Jimi Agbaje and the party leaders, also the fight over who controls the state executive between Segun Adewale and Adegbola Dominic? Segun Adewale is not a member of our party, about the blame game between Agbaje and leaders of the party that is always a true tale of defeat, we are stepping into it, and we will make sure that everybody comes together, the party is bigger and more authoritative than any individual, we have called and caution everybody, I know for sure at long last we will sit at the table and resolve our differences. On Adewale issue, how can an individual, even if he is a raving mad man and in a democratic process where things are structured, just wake up one morning and say he is the state chairman of the party. He said he had agreement with leaders of the party. With who? He said with Adegoke Salvador and others. Where is Salvador now, there was a congress that produced Salvador, when he left, the National Working Committee ( NWC) of the party, looked into the situation , and Dominic is currently the state chairman of the party, who did Adewale had agreement with, he is sick, and the person is equally sick, they are oblivious of what it takes to become the party chairman, and the party constitution is very clear, he is not a member of our party, as far as I am concerned he does not exist. Who does he relate with, if they zone the whole thing and the national working committee is not working with him? He should go and find something tangible to do with his life.

Despite antics of APC, PDP is waxing Supreme Court ruling: Ondo APC urges stronger across Nigeria - Olafeso Continued from page 17 What are you doing about the crisis raging in the party? There is no crisis, I spoke with the DPO, Ikeja he has been routed out of the office, Dominic is completely in charge, you cannot brew crisis where there is none, I am building this party, we have had enough, I am not building any crisis, that was why we quickly ostracised him, if you read my press release, I made it abundantly clear that, this is not the era of Ali Modu Sheriff and co, where people just wake up early in the morning and make some pronouncements. Adewale is not a member of our party, how can you run in July 2018 as the governorship candidate of ADP in Ekiti State, and suddenly now say he has agreement with the party, with who? He must be insane and trying to wake up from his insanity. Nobody will tolerate such characters any more in our party, this not the era of thuggerry, it is the era of reasoning, we must be compassionate to understand that, the people behind it all they are suffering, there is so much pain and poverty in this land. I am worried because this is not how we grew up. People grew from poor background to the level we attained, because there was provision for education, provision for health, people fed well in school during Obafemi Awolowo era. How could I have a PhD if there was no support from government, my parents could not afford the kind of education I have today, so Adewale and co must be serious, this party will not tolerate that. Anyway, the police is already investigating him over creating chaos in our party, he is not a member of the PDP, nobody had any agreement with him whatsoever. Your party has won the governorship election in Oyo State, what efforts are on ground to win more elections in the geo political zone? I congratulate the people of Oyo State for standing their ground against oppression and inversion, and eventually when the election held, you can see they (APC members) are not popular in Oyo State , I congratulate the elected governor of Oyo State for his outstanding brilliance and leadership in that election for bringing everybody together. Oyo will be a launch pad for our return to South West, we have returned in Ondo State, we won two senatorial seats, we won the presidential election massively, even when they did everything to cut down our lead. We are coming, we are telling the rest of the world that Ondo State is coming back into the PDP fold, alongside with Osun State, since Oyo and Ondo States are in the basket, it is just a matter of time to return to the South West, to re - enact the lost glory of the Awolowo era and time, believe me, it is doable, it is just reducing all the humongous stealing under APC. They claim that the PDP is corrupt, believe you me what the APC is doing right now is digital stealing, they have done nothing in the last three and the half years, and they are trying to explore their way through another four years, that is what they are doing, they spent four years blaming the PDP,

well the remaining four years, I don’t know who they will continue to blame, I don’t know may be they will continue blaming APC (themselves) for the first four years, they are irrational, they are insane, that is why I don’t listen to them in the social media and the news, I wonder why Nigerians still listen to that kind of insane utterances from people who don’t know exactly what they are trying to do. They have no principle or any ideological position that they are hinging governance in Nigeria on and that is the truth. I am passionate about what I am saying because, I know we can do better than what we are trying to do. PDP did better despite the fact that we were disconnected from the people. The reasons advanced why the PDP lost election in 2015 were given as arrogance on the part of PDP members, disconnection from the people and indiscipline on the part of party members, will you say your party has addressed these lapses? All what you said about us are correct, and we have addressed them, if we did not address them, we couldn’t have done better in the last general elections, we have eliminated this idea of victors sharing all the positions, and public office being for the highest bidder internal democracy have improved, things are done right in the open, we criticise ourselves, we have apologised to the Nigeria nation, we have called to order some of our leaders and some of them are even retired. Before God and man we made it abundantly clear to anybody who want to run that the wish of the people must prevail, that was the decision of NWC which I am a member, that is what we are doing exactly differently from the APC, you could see that all our primary processes were different from their own, they just sit in the office and write results , they just write names and submit and say those are their candidates, that was why many factions of APC submitted candidates’ names, and in the end none was accepted by INEC. I am not saying we don’t have our own problems, we had problems in Ogun and Lagos states, but I am sincere enough, and honest to know that those are problems and I have to resolve them, I have to bring everybody to the table to resolve them. Like I have been tough on Adewale of Lagos State, who decided to open his mouth wide and vomit insanity, that is what the party has to do, discipline, internal democracy, good leadership, commitment to goal and ensuring that when you go wrong you have to apologise. How many times have you seen APC apologising to Nigerians for insecurity, for lack of infrastructural development, for not ruling well, except abusing everybody and blaming everything on the PDP. For us, the future is very, very bright and we will get back our stolen presidential election, mark my words, by the time the presidential election litigation is declared in favour of Abubakar Atiku at the tribunal, court of Appeal and Supreme Court, you will come back and interview me. You will see that these people just sold dummy to the Nigerian people and finally the dummy will kill them.

Oyetola to settle down for governance

have convinced all observers that they cannot be intimidated nor bribed.” With the judgement, he argued that the elected governor of Osun State could now settle down to attend to the development and welfare needs of the good people of the state. He also counseled political parties to see elections as contest to serve, and not a do-or-die affair, warning that such is inimical to political development. Adetimehin urged Governor Gboyega Oyetola to be “magnanimous in victory” and view the entire state as his constituency for attention. “With this, His Excellency would have allayed the fears of many, and enjoy the support of all and sundry,” the party boss admonished.

Stories by Patrick Okohue The Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), in Ondo State, Engr. Ade Adetimehin, has described the Supreme Court verdict on the governorship election in the State of Osun as a vivid vindication of the party’s sincerity. Adetimehin therefore commended the courage of the judiciary, particularly that of the Justices of the highest judicial in the land for dispensing justice without sentiments. The party chairman in a statement signed by the State Publicity Secretary, Mr. Alex Kalejaye, noted that “The judiciary has once again made us proud; the Supreme Court justices

NNPP announces change of baton in leadership of its Anambra State chapter The New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) has announced the appointment of Hon. Martins U. Ekweozor JP as the Acting Chairman for Anambra State chapter for a period of three months commencing from Thursday, July 4, 2019. The party said its National Executive Committee (NEC) took the decision of appointing Ekweozor in acting capacity following the dissolution of the John Ojukwu - led Interim State Executive Committee of the party in the state. The party in a statement signed by its Head, Research, Planning and Strategy Mr. Dipo Olayoku, noted that “the dissolution of the John Ojukwu-led Interim State Executive comes on the heels of

the expiration of the 3 months given him and his Executives to conduct a democratically acceptable State Congress to put in place a substantive State Executive Committee of our great Party. “The NEC has therefore appointed Hon. Martins U. Ekweozor in acting capacity for a period of 3 months within which an interim State Executive Committee is put in place to work with him and at the same time conduct a State Congress where the substantive democratically elected State Executive Committee would emerge. “NEC is taking these strategic giant strides towards positioning the party for the forthcoming 2020 Gubernatorial Election in

Anambra State in line with the spirit and the provisions of the Constitution of our great Party. “As a forward looking party, geared towards evolving the New Nigeria of our dream, NNPP is poised to making its impact felt in subsequent elections following the cheering and encouraging results recorded by the party in the recent 2019 elections, cutting across Bauchi State and other states of the federation where we won State Assembly seat, House of Representatives and Senatorial seats being contested at the Election Petition Tribunal. “We consider all these as a huge step for us and it is a mandate that we must start now to reposition NNPP for the 2023 general elections,” the statement read.

Ondo APC chieftain charges politicians to serve with integrity A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), in Ondo State, Chief Fola Dabo, has charged politicians and political office holders to render service with dedication and integrity. Dabo spoke in his country home at Igbekebo, headquarters of Ese-Odo Local Government Area, when he received the State Chairman of the party, Engr. Ade Adetimehin and members of the State Working Committee. The party elder in a statement signed by the State Publicity Secretary, Mr. Alex Kalejaye emphasised that it takes integrity to win trust, confidence, and consistent loyalty of the people. He said, “You must be passionate about serving the people; you must do this with integrity and sincerity. “You must be steadfast and promote selfless service to the people; positions and gains will come thereafter.” The party chieftain said the secret of his success in political sojourn was his foresight and “good philosophy about life.” Dabo urged the Chairman to remain focused and be more committed to building the chapter, and ensure a united party ahead of future elections. “You must mend all fences within the party, and unite all members for them to be on one page, so that you can lead the state to another electoral success,” he admonished. Earlier, the State Chairman, Engr. Adetimehin told the octogenarian that he led the SWC to the area to rub

strengthen the party. Ade Adetimehin Adetimehin said the task of rebuilding a party was enormous, saying “the process has begun”. The party boss also encouraged the party executive and leaders in Ese-Odo to hold regular meetings to discuss issues and challenges they may be facing, with a view to proffering solutions.

Californians jolted by strong aftershock following biggest quake

Mohamed al-Hacen Lebatt (left), AU envoy to Sudan, sits next to General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo as he shakes hands with an army general following a press conference in Khartoum

Sudan military council, opposition reach power-sharing agreement Sudan’s ruling generals and a coalition of protest and opposition groups have reached an agreement to share power during a transition period until elections, in a deal that could break weeks of political deadlock since the overthrowing of autocratic President Omar alBashir in April. Both sides agreed to establish a joint military-civilian sovereign council that will rule the country by rotation “for a period of three years or slightly more”, Mohamed Hassan Lebatt, African Union (AU) mediator, said at a news conference on Friday. Under the agreement, five seats would go to the military and five to civilians, with an additional seat given to a civilian agreed upon by both sides The ruling Transitional Military Council (TMC) and the civilian leaders also agreed to launch a “transparent and independent investigation” into the violence that began on June 3 when scores of pro-democracy demonstrators were killed in a brutal military crackdown on a protest camp in the capital, Khartoum. TMC deputy head General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, who is widely known as Hemeti, welcomed Friday’s deal, which, he said, would be inclusive. “We would like to reassure all political forces, armed movements and all those who participated in the change from young men and women … that this agreement will be comprehensive and will not exclude anyone,” added Dagalo, who also heads the feared paramilitary unit Rapid Support Forces (RSF) accused by the demonstrators of crushing the sit-in outside the military headquarters. Omar al-Degair, a leader of the Forces for Freedom and Change (FFC), an umbrella organisation of opposition groups, said the agreement “opens the way for the formation of the institutions of the transitional authority, and we hope that this is the beginning of a new era”.

In a statement on Friday morning, the Sudanese Professionals Association (SPA), which is part of the FFC, said the transition period would last three years and three months. The military would lead the sovereign council for the first 21 months, and a civilian would take over for the remaining 18 months, it said. The FFC would appoint a cabinet of ministers, the SPA said, adding that a legislative council would be formed after the appointment of the sovereign council and the cabinet. The two sides also agreed to set up a committee of lawyers, including jurists from the AU, to finalise the agreement within 48 hours. The deal came after two days of talks following the collapse of the previous round of negotiations in the wake of the crackdown on the protest camp. Opposition medics say more than 100 people were killed in the dispersal and subsequent violence on June 3. Officials put the death toll at 62. The TMC and the opposition coalition have been wrangling for weeks over what form Sudan’s transitional government should take after the military deposed al-Bashir on April 11 after months of mass protests against his 30-year rule. Protesters had remained in the streets following alBashir’s toppling, fearing the generals intended to cling to power or preserve some form of authoritarian rule. The AU and neighbouring Ethiopia stepped up mediation efforts to end the crisis and negotiations resumed earlier this week, following massive protests last weekend in which tens of thousands of demonstrators filled the streets of Sudan’s main cities in the biggest show of numbers since the June 3 crackdown. In Khartoum, thousands of people took to the streets to celebrate the breakthrough. But many called for continued protests and pressure on the military to implement its side of the deal.

“We would like to see many more guarantees from the TMC because they’ve made many promises on handing over power only to backtrack later on,” said Mohamed Ismail, a 34-yearold engineer who was part of a crowd in Khartoum’s al-Sahafa area. Ashraf Mohamed Ali, another protester, called the agreement a “good move for Sudan”. “It is important to see the implementation of the deal on the ground because the TMC’s actions over the past month proves this council is not serious about giving up power to civilians,” he told Al Jazeera via telephone. “And so to have an agreement is in itself a good thing. I am happy but we want to see the deal being implemented.” Welcoming the two sides’ decision to launch an investigation into the June 3 killings, Ali said “any deal that doesn’t include a real investigation isn’t going to be satisfying for the majority of the civilians.” The protesters were not happy about the possibility of Hemeti “being part of a new government”, Ali said, referring to the RSF’s role in dispersing the Khartoum protest camp. “But this is the reality,” he said. “The RSF control everything in Sudan. So if you want to make a deal or if you want to have a civilian government, you need to know how to deal with them, in a way that could serve your agenda and without dragging the country into war.” The United Arab Emirates, which backs the TMC, congratulated the two sides on the power-sharing deal. “We hope that the next phase will witness the foundation of a constitutional system that will strengthen the role of institutions with broad national and popular support,” UAE’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Anwar Gargash said in a post on Twitter. Abu Dhabi will stand with Khartoum in “good times and bad times”, he added.

A strong aftershock has hit Southern California as residents were still assessing the damage from the strongest earthquake in the region in 25 years on July 4, which was felt by more than 20 million people. Friday’s magnitude-5.4 aftershock, the biggest so far, struck the same desert region as Thursday’s earthquake. Its epicentre was about 18km west of Searles Valley, the US Geological Survey said. The aftershock was also felt in Los Angeles, about 240km to the south, and the surrounding area, with many residents posting on Twitter that they were awakened by it. There had already been more than 80 smaller aftershocks since Thursday’s magnitude-6.4 earthquake near the city of Ridgecrest, which was felt from Los Angeles to Las Vegas, USGS seismologist Lucy Jones said. “We should be expecting lots of aftershocks and some of them will be bigger than the 3s we’ve been having so far,” Jones told reporters on Thursday. “I think the chance of having a magnitude 5 ... is probably greater than 50-50.” Only a few injuries were reported in Thursday’s earthquake, but two houses caught fire due to broken gas pipes, officials said. Water gushed from

zigzagged cracks in the pavement from burst water lines. Deep fissures snaked across the Mojave Desert. The quake sent 30 residents of the desert community of 28,000 to emergency shelters, knocked some houses off their foundations and left many homeowners wondering if their insurance would cover the damage, Ridgecrest Mayor Peggy Breeden said. “The most important thing is that we have not had any loss of life or any major personal damage to people,” Breeden told CNN on Friday. Breeden said officials were still assessing the extent of the damage, but added that emergency state and federal aid would enable the city’s overwhelmed agencies to start the cleanup without worrying about their budgets. The Ridgecrest Regional Hospital, from which 15 patients were evacuated earlier, appeared intact - apart from some new cracks in the walls. Thursday’s quake was the biggest in Southern California since the 1994 magnitude-6.6 Northridge earthquake, USGS geophysicist Paul Caruso said. That earthquake, which was centred in a heavily populated area of Los Angeles, killed 57 people and caused billions of dollars of damage.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer: Manchester United working on more signings

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is hopeful of adding more new arrivals to his squad before the start of the season. United have signed Dan James and Aaron Wan-Bissaka for a combined £65 million and there remains interest in Leicester defender Harry Maguire, Sporting Lisbon midfielder Bruno Fernandes and Newcastle’s Sean Longstaff. “We’re always looking to improve the squad and, all over the summer, I’ve been in touch with Joel [Glazer] and Ed [Woodward] and all the recruitment people, and analysis people,” Solskjaer

READ MORE ON: www.dailytimes.ng told MUTV. “We are quite calm. “We have been good in the market so far. We’re still working on a case or two. There will probably be some more business done but I’ve got to say it’s been very good so far. I’ve got the backing and we’ve got the people we wanted.” Solskjaer welcomed the players back to Carrington this week with the bulk of the squad reporting back for preseason training on Monday. They are set to fly to Australia for the start of their preseason tour on Sunday before their first game of the summer against Perth Glory on July 13, with

g22

Paul Pogba expected to join up with the rest of the squad. “There is a chance for everyone,” Solskjaer said. “They are all going to be a part of this. “Well, most of them anyway. I always felt the first couple of weeks was a big chance for me to impress the gaffer and to show him that I am ready for the season. “We gave them a programme [over the summer] and they all followed it. Some are in better shape than others. Overall the squad is in very good nick, so we can get the real hard work and good quality work straight away.”

Gernot Rohr to start Jamilu Collins against Cameroon, Shehu Abdullahi trains Super Eagles head coach Genort Rohr has confirmed that Jamilu Collins is available for selection when Nigeria face Cameroon Saturday’s Africa Cup of Nations round of 16 clash at the Alexandria Stadium. The Franco-German coach stated this while briefing journalists about the injury updates in his team ahead of Saturday’s all-important clash against the Indomitable Lions

at the Alexandria stadium. But Rohr could not ascertain whether the SC Paderborn 07 of German defender will make the starting lineup or come on from the bench. In the same vein, Rohr revealed that the Super Eagles captain John Obi Mikel will not be available for selection due to injury while he confirmed that Shehu Abdullahi has started training with the rest of the

squad but he will not be part of the team for Cameroon’s game. “We have good news from Collins because he can play now, I don’t know yet if he can start or not, but it is good if he can start from the bench. We have injury of our captain Obi Mikel he will not be able to play this match and Shehu is still improving. He has started training now. But he cannot play yet,” Rohr said.

Gianni Infantino: France 2019 ‘best women’s World Cup ever’ France 2019 has been “the best women’s World Cup ever”, FIFA President Gianni Infantino insisted on Friday. Infantino said the tournament had been “phenomenal” and “incredible” as he promised to increase investment in the

women’s game and to propose further expanding the tournament for the next tournament in 2023. “There was a before and there will be an after”, he added ahead of Sunday’s final between holders the United States and the Netherlands in Lyon.

Samir Nasri joins former Manchester City teammate Vincent Kompany at Anderlecht Belgian side Anderlecht have confirmed the signing of former Arsenal, Manchester City and France midfielder Samir Nasri, reuniting him with his former City team-mate Vincent Kompany. The 32-year-old hasn’t played since leaving West Ham at the end of last season, six months after signing a short-term deal with the Hammers in January. He arrived at the London Stadium just as he completed an 18-month ban from football for doping offences, having tested positive for a banned substance in 2016 that he claimed had administered unknowingly. And in a bizarre animated short which boasts that Nasri is “quicker than a horse”, the 34-time Belgian champions confirmed via their Twitter account that the former France international has joined them, linking up once again with his former skipper at City. Kompany left the Premier League champions at the end of this past season having scored the most important goal of the team’s run-in, a 30-yard bullet to earn Pep Guardiola’s side a 1-0 win against Leicester City in their penultimate game. He was appointed as playercoach by the Brussels giants 19 May, just a week after lifting the Premier League trophy for the fourth time as City captain and bringing to an

end an 11-year association with the club he joined back in 2008. Nasri joined Arsenal from Marseille in 2008 and spent three seasons in north London before becoming restless and agitating for a move to big-spending City in 2011. He played alongside Kompany in 2012 as the team won its first top-flight title in 44 years, pipping arch-rivals Manchester United to the championship on goal difference on the season’s final day. The pair won the league again with City in 2014. Anderlecht are about to go into their

first season with European football in five years after they finished sixth in Belgium’s Jupiler League, and their season was marred by violent protests, crowd trouble and incidences of flairs being thrown onto the pitch. Anderlecht’s sporting director Michael Verschueren said of Kompany’s appointment: “With Vincent’s return we have achieved something that everyone thought was impossible. Vincent is the child of the house and the person we need to give a new impulse to the club and to use for RSCA 2.0.”

AFCON: Daniel Akpeyi returns for Cameroon clash Super Eagles goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi will be between the sticks when Nigeria tackles the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon in the Round of 16 fixture at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations at the Alexandria Stadium in Egypt on Saturday. Akpeyi was in goal for the Eagles opening two matches against Burundi and Guinea but was on the bench for the final group match against Madagascar which Nigeria lost 2-0.

For both matches, he made some vital saves even though he appeared shaky. Home-based keeper Ikechukwu Ezenwa replaced him for the Madagascar game The Kaizer Chiefs of South Africa keeper became the first choice ahead of Francis Uzoho who has been relegated to the third choice position by head coach, Gernot Rohr. The kickoff for Nigeria vs Cameroon is 5pm Nigerian time.

How Super Eagles will beat Cameroon tomorrow – Peterside Idah Former Nigeria international Peterside Idah has given his formula to how the Super Eagles can fly past the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon tomorrow to reach the 2019 AFCON quarterfinal. Idah said he expects Daniel Akpeyi to return between the posts with Kenneth Omeruo, Alex Iwobi and Moses Simon all starting. “It will be a very, very tough game. The clash of the Titans,” he said on television today. “We have a better strike force, they don’t score too many goals even though they have been unbeaten in their last seven games, and we have recent history going for us. “Cameroon may be the defending champions but the last time they beat us in 2000.” Idah continued: “We also very quick players like Moses Simon, Ahmed Musa and Alex Iwobi. “Odion Ighalo is still our best striker and I expect he starts alongside Ahmed Musa, Moses

Zhang Zhang stuns Caroline Wozniacki to make first Wimbledon 4th round

China’s Zhang Shuai has despatched former world number one Caroline Wozniacki, in two straight sets to make her first Wimbledon fourth round. She rallied back from 0-4 down in the opening set on Friday to beat Wozniacki. Zhang, the world number 60, is the first Chinese woman since Peng Shuai in 2015 to reach the second week at the All England Club thanks to her 6-4, 6-2 win over the 14th seeded Dane. Before this year, the 30-yearold Zhang had never won a main draw match at Wimbledon in five attempts. It was a record which reflected

her previous struggles — she was 0-14 at the Slams until she broke through to the 2016 Australian Open quarter-finals. On Friday, she fired 26 winners against just eight for Wozniacki and goes on to face either Viktorija Golubic of Switzerland or Ukraine’s Dayana Yastremska. Wozniacki, the 2018 Australian Open champion, has never made it past the fourth round at Wimbledon. Her affection for the tournament would not have been helped by her unhappiness at what she claimed to be a number of poor calls by the Hawkeye review system.

Simon and Alex Iwobi. “Iwobi has to be considered ahead of Mikel Obi because he is more offensive player. “Mikel dropped so deep against Madagascar when he was supposed to play behind the two strikers. “The return of both (Daniel) Akpeyi and Omeruo is good because they were not part of the disastrous loss to Madagascar.” The TV pundit also suggested the selection of Wilfred Ndidi and Oghenekaro Etebo in midfield, while Chidozie Awaziem and Ola Aina in defence. He also said Villarreal youngster Samuel Chukwueze suffers from youthful exuberance should start from the bench and only come in as replacement for Ahmed Musa on the right side of attack. Kick-off time tomorrow is 5pm in Alexandria.

Orji Okwonkwo wins MLS Goal of the Week Orji Okwonkwo’s rising profile in Major League Soccer (MLS) has received a massive boost after one of his goals against Portland Timbers was voted Goal of Week 17. Okwonkwo scored twice for Montreal Impact to beat Portland 2-1. His second goal was an absolute beauty as with his back to goal, he turned sharply

before he shot into the roof of the goal. The forward has scored four goals for Montreal Impact this season on loan from Serie A club Bologna. He has also played on loan at another Italian club Brescia. Okwonkwo has been capped by Nigeria at U17, U20 and U23 levels.

Rohr: No room for errors against Cameroon Cutting out individual errors will be a priority for Nigeria when they take on holders Cameroon at the Africa Cup of Nations in Alexandria on Saturday. A defensive lapse from centre back Leon Balogun saw Nigeria concede early and go on to be upset 2-0 by Madagascar in their last group game. It was result that relegated Nigeria to second place in the group and effectively set up a meeting with their neighbours and arch rivals in the first knockout round. “I’m scared of us committing individual errors and I hope we won’t have individual errors again tomorrow that will cost us,” said Coach Gernot Rohr, who is hoping the hiccup against the Malagasy might yet turn out to be a positive. “The match against Madagascar was a little deception but we and the fans have learnt to be humble.” He said the team wanted make amends after that disappointment. “There were changes in the team to play some players and keep them in the rhythm of the competition but now the best team has to start against Cameroon to do their best and make Nigeria proud,” the

coach added. Nigeria and Cameroon have a long history of struggles for hegemony in the African game, with the Super Eagles having the upper hand in their last contest, in the 2018 World Cup qualifiers. “You know when you hear Cameroon and Nigeria there is always a sense of revenge,” he said. “We know that Cameroon are very strong with good

footballing education in France and we hope we can find their weak points,” he added. “It is now that the real tournament is starting for us and we have seen the fixtures. All eight games are very difficult for everybody. Even for Egypt and of course for ourselves.” Rohr confirmed captain John Mikel Obi is ruled out of the game because of injury.

Serena Williams recovers to beat Kaja Juvan Seven-time Wimbledon champion Serena Williams recovered from being a set down to beat teenage qualifier Kaja Juvan and reach the third round. Williams was surprised by the 18-year-old

world number 133 from Slovenia, who twice broke serve to win the first set. The 11th seed, 37, responded to take control in the second and eventually closed out the decider for a 2-6 6-2 6-4 victory in one hour 36

minutes. “She played well and I started out a little slow,” said the American. “I like the pressure. I would rather be in this position than any other and I play best when I am down sometimes. I am a fighter.”

Afcon: Nigeria’s awoken from Madagascar nightmare – William Troost-Ekong

Afcon: Nigeria will be tough, but we’re motivated to win – Andre Onana Cameroon goalkeeper Andre Onana expects the Super Eagles of Nigeria to be at their best when both teams clash in Saturday’s Africa Cup of Nations Round of 16 clash at the Alexandria Stadium, but he says the Indomitable Lions are ready to fight and win. The Super Eagles who have won two and lost one of their three games at the competition are yet to play to their full potentials in Egypt 2019. Their failure to top Group B following last Sunday’s shocking 2-0 loss to the Barea of Madagascar meant they have to navigate through a tough second round encounter against their perennial rivals. Onana, who plays for Dutch champions Ajax Amsterdam, has however challenged his teammates to give their all in the game. “We have total respect for the Super Eagles. They are a good side and can improve on what they have shown so far is this competition, “Onana told reporters at the Alexandria Stadium on Friday.

Sports

“For us, it is a big motivation to face a good side like Nigeria. You don’t need extra motivation to play a big game like us.” The Super Eagles stopped their archrivals from featuring at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia beating the Indomitable Lions 4-0 in Uyo before been forced to a 1-1 draw in Yaounde in the reverse fixture. But Onana is not thinking of avenging that defeat, but instead is focused on

securing a berth in the quater-final. “The defeat to Nigeria in the World Cup qualifiers is all in the past, and tomorrow’s game is a different ball game . We are confident and relaxed ahead of the game . it’s what we’ve been training for. “We expect a tough game against the Super Eagles. We know it will be tough. I’m preparing myself well and I am ready to play against them.”

Nigeria defender William TroostEkong believes the embarrassing 2-0 defeat against Madagascar in the group stage will inspire his side to victory in Saturday’s clash with the reigning Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) champions Cameroon. The Super Eagles, who have been tipped as one of the tournament favourites, suffered a shocking defeat to Nicolas Dupuis’s men courtesy of goals from Lalaina Nomenjanahary and Carolus Andriamatsinoro on Sunday. “We feel sad about the Madagascar game; it will give us a boost ahead against Cameroon,” Troost-Ekong told the media on Friday. “We’ve been in this situation before when we’ve lost games when we might have been favourites beforehand. The same thing happened at home versus South Africa at the start of qualifying. Games like that happen. “I think everyone now has woken up from that game. I don’t think anyone was satisfied from that performance. So we

have to be very driven to show Nigeria and Africa that we feel otherwise. If you need motivation for this game you’re probably not in the right mindset. We’re going to be very eager to prove a point.” Troost-Ekong, making his Afcon debut in Egypt, has featured twice for Nigeria so far: starting in both the defeat against Madagascar and the 1-0 win over Burundi in the opener. The 25-year-old defender also spoke about his personal mission for the match. “We aim to win and this game [against Cameroon] for me as a player will be pivotal,” he stated. “We have faced them a number of times and know how good they are. “We faced them in the 2018 World Cup qualifiers and they might be out for revenge so we have to be ready for them.” This will be the seventh encounter between Nigeria and Cameroon in the Africa Cup of Nations, with the record between both sides being perfectly balanced: two wins for each side and two draws.
