The Acting Chairman, Edo State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Dr. Joan Osa Oviawe, who disclosed this in a chat with journalists in Benin City, on Friday, said that “we

took a course of action by visiting and ensuring that the case was transferred from the Akoko-Edo Area Division of the Nigeria Police Division to the State Criminal Investigation Department in the state capital.” She attributed the arrest and subsequent handover of the victim’s custody to the State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development to “efforts by Child Protection Network (CPN) as well as the SUBEB.’’ The acting chairman assured that the accused would be charged to court to ensure that justice is done.

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, has revealed that the National Chairman of the newly formed Reformed All Progressives Congress (rAPC) can be ignored by the ruling party, saying that though he is ready to go to any length to talk to people who mean well and who have genuine grievances. Oshiomhole was speaking at the National Secretariat of the party on Friday in Abuja when a team of the defunct Congress for Progressives Change (CPC) from all the States including the Federal capital Territory (FCT) paid a solidarity visit to him. He said: “I am very confident that we can afford to ignore Buba Galadima. And like I said yesterday I’m ready to go to any length to talk to people who mean well and who have genuine grievances arising from communication gaps or misunderstanding or even from the error of judgment on the part of anyone or even from the way we have managed our patronage.

“Protests like these are acknowledged and we are working to resolve them. When we see people who have genuine grievances we are not ashamed to talk to them. We recognize that democracy is an equalizer and only people who are humble enough can survive and we have been engaging”. Oshiomhole further said, “We listened to Buba Galadima. It is as if a very hungry bird is dancing at the centre of the road and a disgruntle drummer not far away in the bush is drumming for him, but this is not to say that we are not aware that there are challenges here and there but anything about APC is considered much more than the sum total of all the challenges we have in many of the states and by the special grace of God, we shall overcome them and we are already overcoming them. “We have been meeting with various individuals and groups who we believe really have genuine concerns on certain matters and we are making progress but when we see people who don’t mean well, there are a lot of idle people who don’t have any other thing to do

and once they don’t have access to national honey pot, then they begin to complain. “For me, there is no cause for alarm, nobody should panic over one Buba Galadima; whose group, I believe cannot define us in the next election in 2019. Nigerians are wiser; they know that corruption is fighting back, they also know that President Buhari’s resolve to fight corruption must elicit a counter force and that force must find attraction in some people but like we have rightly said, we should not be distracted and we encourage the president not to be distracted, he must remain focus and sustain the fight and I believe the rebellion will be crushed using the superior power of argument, persuading our people not to forget in a hurry where we are coming from”. The group, led by Umar Shuibu, pledged their loyalty and total support to Oshiomhole and President Muhammadu Buhari, saying that the group stand solidly behind him in the fight against corruption which members of the group believe is fighting back.

PDP rejects Buhari’s Executive Order, says it’s descent to fascism Tunde Opalana, Abuja The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has described as illegal, unconstitutional and a dangerous step towards a descent to fascism, the asset seizure Executive Order imposed by President Muhammadu Buhari in total disregard to 1999 Constitution (as amended). The major opposition ruling party also stated that the constitution does not, under any section, confer such fascist powers on the President, saying that there can be no legitimate latitude of interpretation placed on sections 5 and 15 (5) of the 1999 Constitution cited as justifications for the draconian executive order that can excuse it. The PDP stated this in a statement made available on Friday by its spokesman, Mr Kola Ologbondiyan. The statement reads in part, “Therefore, President Buhari’s

unilateral Executive Order is a travesty of justice and rule of law, as it vehemently seeks to hijack and usurp the powers of both the legislature and the courts and vest it on himself so that he can use same at will, as a political instrument, to haunt, traumatize, harass and victimize perceived political opponents. “In order words, Mr. President wants to change our democratic governance to a military regime, in line with his lamentation, two days ago, that the fight against corruption will be better under a military regime than under a democracy. “It is instructive to emphasize that the PDP is not in anyway opposed to the fight against corruption. Rather, the party holds that the imposition of this Executive Order, which is radically at variance with the provisions of the constitution, is totally unacceptable. “PDP takes this Executive Order 6 of 2018 as a reenactment of the obnoxious Decree 2 of 1984, which incidentally was

also an enactment under then military Head of State, General Muhammadu Buhari, and this must not be permitted in our current democratic dispensation. “If allowed, this Order will confer limitless powers on Mr. President, whose administration’s penchant for violation of rules and order already suggests a readiness for autocracy and a drive towards fascism. “In a democracy, the role of the executive arm of government is to enforce court orders/ judgments handed down based on the interpretation of existing laws. Any suggestion to the contrary, as clearly intended by this Executive Order, is totally an aberration and inconsistent with the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.” The PDP also invited Nigerians and the international community to note that the latest action is a deliberate attempt by the Buhari

False assets declaration: S’Court frees Saraki, okays Gov Ugwuanyi’s election Senate President, Gov Ahmed hail verdict, laud judiciary

Andrew Orolua, Tunde Opalana, Abuja and Kehinde Akinpelu, Ilorin The Supreme Court on Friday held that the Federal Government prosecutor did not establish prima facie case on any of the 18-count charge filed against the Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, before the Code Conduct Tribunal (CCT), Abuja on the alleged false assets declaration. The apex court also set aside the decision of the Court of Appeal in Abuja which on December 12, 2017 ruled that Saraki had a case to answer on three out of the 18-count charge he was facing before the CCT. In its judgment delivered on Friday by Justice Centus Chima Nweze, the Supreme Court affirmed the decision of the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) which had earlier upheld the no case submission of Saraki’s lawyer, Chief Kanu Agabi (SAN). Dissatisfied with the tribunal decision on no case submission, Saraki had appealed against it and asked the Court of Appeal to set the tribunal decision aside. But in its ruling, the Court of Appeal acquitted Saraki on 15 out of the 18 count charge. Not quite satisfied with the decision, Saraki appealed against the Court of Appeal decision. On it part, the Federal Government also filed a cross appeal, urging the apex court to restore the 15 count charge that was struck out by the Court of Appeal. Delivering the lead judgment on the appeals on Friday, Justice Centus Chima Nweze held that it was clear from the evidences of the four prosecution witnesses that a prima facie case was not established against the defendant. “All the evidences of the witnesses were hear say evidences which are not admissible in court”, Justice Nweze, held. He said that the Court of Appeal accepted these findings of the tribunal and acquitted the defendant on 15 count but summersaulted when it relied on same inadmissible hear say evidences and held that a prima facie case was established on three of the counts. Justice Nweze said the Court of Appeal made caricature in its judgment when it found as a fact that the entire evidence adduced by the prosecution was hearsay and manifestly unreliable and still went ahead to agree that prima facie case was established against Saraki in 3 out of the 18 count charges.

He further held that there was no basis for the Court of Appeal to have asked Saraki to defend himself on the 3 count charges having found the entire evidence of the prosecution as a product of hearsay, adding that “ the action of the Court of Appeal amounted to forensic Summersault and capable of making ill of jurisprudence.” The apex court also held that, “This court will not lend its jurisdiction to such a charade and caricature of justice. It carries grave error in holding that a prima facie case has been established against the appellant”. “The prosecution is duty bound by law to call all key witnesses to be able to establish prima facie case against anybody”. Meanwhile, following his acquittal of charges of false assets declaration by the Supreme Court on Friday, Saraki has reiterated his confidence in the judicial process and the ability of the Judiciary to do justice to all manner of men and in all circumstances. In a statement personally signed by him after the judgement of the Supreme Court which upheld the earlier decision of the CCT, discharging and acquitting him of all 18 count charges instituted against him, Saraki expressed gratitude to all Nigerians who have supported him since the case commenced three years ago. The statement reads in part: “At the end of a tortuous journey of 1018 Days, counting from September 22, 2015, when the case began at the Tribunal, I am happy that I have been vindicated. The Supreme Court has affirmed that there is no evidence of false declaration of assets. The court also observed that certain agents took over the responsibility of the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB) in this trial, and one can infer that this was done towards a pre-determined end. “This outcome has gladdened my heart and further strengthened my belief in this country and as well as my faith in the Almighty Allah, who is the righter of all wrongs. God has vindicated me today before the judgement of man, and I am most thankful and humbled at His grace and infinite mercies. “Through it all, I refused to be shaken, knowing, as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said, that the arch of the moral universe may be long, but it bends towards justice. I knew the day would come when justice would prevail and I would be exonerated. “I have always believed in the

infallibility of our Judiciary, secure in the knowledge that our courts – the last refuge of the oppressed - would never condemn the innocent. This outcome is also a vindication of my belief in the rule of law. “As I said in my first appearance at the CCT, this is a politically motivated case. The case was trumped up in the first instance because of my emergence as the President of the Senate, against the wishes of certain forces. Ordinarily, I doubt anyone would be interested in the asset declaration form I filled over 15 years ago. “What we have seen is the opposite. Instead of working together in the interest of the nation and to seek to do better for our people, we are fighting one another and using legal instruments to mount baseless accusations against one another. Instead of exhibiting the need for unity and working day and night for that purpose, we are stoking the fire of division and rancour. I maintain that, above all else, my CCT trial has been a flagrant vilification of my person, and shows that some people are after their personal interests rather than the national interest. “As a result of the war of attrition, various arms of government have wasted resources needlessly. It has been three wasted years across board in this country. Three years that would have been devoted to tackling issues affecting Nigerians, including: economic recovery, insecurity, youth unemployment and strengthening national institutions – were wasted on malicious prosecution. People were ready to trade-off three years that would have been devoted to fostering cooperation, unity and economic progress for their selfish ends. It is my hope that those who are behind my persecution will see the handwriting on the wall and leave me to do the work for which I was elected, so I can continue to give my all to this great country of ours. “As many have rightly observed, it is plain to see that the anti-corruption fight is being prosecuted with vindictiveness, to target perceived political opponents. I believe in the need to fight corruption, but I will never be party to the selective application of the law or the rhetoric of an insincere anti-corruption fight. “I thank Nigerians for standing by me through the difficult period of this trial. The support of ordinary Nigerians and their faith in me, as well as their sophistication and discernment in seeing this case for

Saraki what it was, has been a source of strength to me. “I am most grateful for the support of my Distinguished Colleagues and the Honourable Members of the 8th National Assembly, for their unflinching support and regular attendance at the various proceedings. They were unfairly criticised for accompanying me on court appearances, but it is now clear that they did so because they believed that injustice to one, is injustice to all. They have been the true embodiment of esprit de corps. I thank them for banding together in the face of an unconscionable attack on the institution of the legislature. “I thank my legal team for their determined and principled stance, and for their knowledge and diligence, which saw this case to its just conclusion. My gratitude to all my friends, political associates, supporters and the good people of Kwara State – all of whom have been solidly behind me. “I thank my family for enduring this trial with their usual grace and fortitude. My immense gratitude also goes to the international community for their interest in this case. The Nigerian press have kept watch and I appreciate their vigilance in ensuring that all the facts were held up to scrutiny. “To my supporters, yes, there is a reason to rejoice, but our celebration must be tempered with the sobering lessons of the attempted injustice from Day One of this trial. We all have to canvas for fairness in the fight against

PDP rejects Buhari’s Executive Order Continued from page 3 administration to side-step the provisions of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), usurp the powers of the legislature, the judiciary and impose an autocratic regime on our nation. The PDP therefore urged the judiciary and the legislature to save the country and her people from an imminent fascism by

rejecting the obnoxious Executive Order. The PDP spokesman added that the party’s lawyers are considering a legal action against the Federal Government on the illegality of the President’s action in the interest of Nigeria and Nigerians. Meanwhile, the PDP has lauded the Supreme Court judgment, dismissing the false assets declaration case against the Senate President, Bukola Saraki at the

Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT). The party said the Supreme Court, by the judgment, has further reinforced the confidence of Nigerian citizens in the courage of the institution of the judiciary, as the temple of justice and the last hope of the common man, particularly under an oppressive regime. The PDP said that the judgment has further supported its disposition that

the Buhari Presidency’s fight against corruption is mere shadow-chasing and a clever attempt at blackmailing the opposition as well as anyone who holds a divergent voice against the administration. It added that the judgment should serve as a spur for all judicial officers at all levels to be bold in upholding the dispensation of justice in all cases without fear, let or politically induced hindrances.

corruption. We should see this verdict as an inspiration to champion the rule of law, promote democracy and its institutions as well as tolerance of divergent views. Also, Kwara State Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed has hailed the Supreme Court verdict over Saraki’s assets declaration and sundry charges instituted against him before the CCT. The Governor, in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Abdulwahab Oba, described the apex court as the bastion of democracy in the country. The governor said: “the apex court’s judgment has reinforced the belief that the judiciary remains the hope of the common man”. “What the Judgment has done is to re-energize the common man’s hope and belief in the judiciary. It is only hope for a better and free Nigeria”, the governor said. Ahmed explained further that the judgement has vindicated the Senate President as a trustworthy and patriotic Nigerian that would do everything necessary to carry the country to an enviable height. He recalled that till the trial lasted, Dr. Saraki was unperturbed, unshaken and remained committed to providing purposeful leadership as the Chairman of the National Assembly, praising him for weathering the storm of legal battle for the last three years. “The judgement is a watershed in political journey of the President of the Senate, Federal Republic of Nigeria and will lay to rest his political persecution”. The Governor congratulated the Senate President for the victory and urged him to continue to work to strengthen the country’s legal process as well as democratic norms. Meanwhile, the Supreme Court has upheld the election of Enugu State Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi. This followed allegation that he was illegally nominated by the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to contest the April 11, 2015, governorship election. The apex court dismissed the suit which was lodged by a chieftain of the PDP in the state, Senator Ayogu Eze as lacking in merit. In a unanimous verdict, a fiveman panel of Justices of the apex court resolved all the issues against the appellant, even as it upheld the judgement of the Court of Appeal in Abuja which earlier affirmed Ugwuanyi’s election victory. The apex court panel presided by Justice Kayode Ariwola, berated the appellant for raising issues it said was previously decided, saying there was no point re-litigating on issue bordering on the primary election that produced Ugwuanyi. The court said that by the provision of section 87 (4) and (9), the appellant who did not participate in the said primary election, lacked the locusstandi to query the outcome. The court said, “There is no substance in this appeal and it is accordingly dismissed.” The apex court further awarded N1million costs against the appellant, in favour of Ugwuanyi who was cited as the 4th Respondent.

Unlawful possession of firearms: FG arraigns ex- Gov. Suswam as judge grants him N500m bail Andrew Orolua, Abuja The Federal Government on Friday arraigned former governor of Benue State Governor Gabriel Suswam on three-count charge of alleged possession of firearms and money laundering before a Federal High Court in Abuja. In the charge filed on June 26, 2018, Suswam who is facing corruption trial in two separate courts , was accused of concealing weapons in his Mercedes Benz 550 4Matic car with Registration No: BWR 135 AH parked at Dunes Investment and Properties Ltd, premises at No. 44 Aguiyi lronsi Way, Maitama, contrary to Section 3 of the Firearms Act Cap F28, Laws of Federation of Nigeria 2004 and punishable under section 27(1)(a)(1) of the same Act. He was also accused of, “Converting 25 designer wrist watches worth several millions of naira being properties you derived directly from corruption and concealed in your Mercedes Benz 550 4Matic with Registration No BWR 135 AH”. The alleged offence is contrary to Section 15(1)(a) (ii) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act, 2011 and punishable under the same section of the Act”. But when the charge was read to Suswam, he pleaded not guilty to the offence while prosecuting lawyer, Abubakar Kayode Alilu,

urged the court for a date to commence trial. The lawyer also asked the court to remand Suswam in prison pending the hearing and determination of the charge against him. Suswam’s lawyer, Mr Paul Erokoro (SAN), however, drew the attention of the court to a bail application, which he said was in order for hearing on Friday. Moving the application, Erokoro told Justice Babatunde Quadri to grant Suswam bail on liberal terms, pointing out that he (Suswam) is on bail in two other charges filed against him by the Federal Government. Suswam’s bail application, Erokoro argued, was based on eight grounds, supported with 18-paragraph affidavit and an attached exhibit to the effect that Suswam has an enlarged heart, a life threatening condition, which he said requires regular medical attention and treatment. According to him, all the facts in the affidavit in support of the application for bail are unchallenged, pointing out that the defendant is a legal practitioner, a two-term governor of Benue State and had served at the House of Representatives for eight years, and will not jump bail. Though the prosecuting lawyer did not oppose Suswam’s bail application, he urged the court to use its discretion in granting the bail. He added that the prosecution intends to call four witnesses in the matter. Having listened to submissions of lawyers

to the parties, Justice Quadri admitted Suswam to bail in the sum of N500million and one surety in likes sum. The judge added that the surety, who must be a resident of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), should also swear to an affidavit of means and that the surety’s residential address must be verified by officials of the court. The judge further held that the surety must also submit one passport photograph to the court as part of the bail conditions for the former governor and adjourned the matter till October 24 and 25, 2018. Count one of the charge reads:”That you, Gabriel Suswam of Rio Negro, Maitama, Abuja, on or about the 24th day of February, 2017 at Dunes Investment and Properties Ltd, No. 44 Aguiyi lronsi Way, Maitama, Abuja, within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, did commit an offence to wit: without lawful authority or licence, you had in your possession one(l) Gloek Pistol with Serial Number KML 275, one (1) Mini rifile with Serial Number 54976 and One(l) AK 47 with Serial Number 5622620063, which weapons were concealed in your Mercedes Benz 550 4Matic car with Registration No: BWR 135 AH and you thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 3 of the Firearms Act Cap F28, Laws of Federation of Nigeria 2004 and punishable under section 27(1)(a)(1) of the same Act”.

Buhari vows to fish out, punish politicians sponsoring violence in states Mathew Dadiya, Abuja President Muhammadu Buhari has reaffirmed his promise to fish out and punish politicians who are deliberately instigating violence in some states as a way of seeking relevance in the country’s politics. Buhari said this on Friday in Monguno, northern part of Borno State while speaking as the Special Guest of Honour at the closing events of the 2018 Army Day celebrations which the army chose to stage in the one-time stronghold of Boko Haram terrorists, 136 kilometres from Maiduguri. The President repeated what he told Christian leaders on Thursday, that a solution is being found to the deadly clashes between farmers and herdsmen, and whosoever is found culpable will be brought to justice. While thanking the armed forces for keeping the country safe, Buhari acknowledged that there were still challenges faced by the nation. He said, “This does not mean there are no challenges. There are pockets of violence in several states. Some deliberately instigated by disgruntled politicians who have lost all arguments and are desperate to cause mayhem as a way of seeking relevance. We shall fish them out and punish according to the provisions of the law.” Making a self-assessment of the administration he has led in the last three years since his election, the President said, “We have worked tirelessly to ensure and preserve the dignity and sanctity of life. When I was sworn in as the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, I promised that this administration would tackle the challenges of Insecurity, poor Economy and Fight Corruption. “We are all witnesses to the fact that our once battered economy as a nation has exited recession and is once again vibrant. Our nation is safe again, thanks to the efforts of our security agencies. “I want to use this opportunity to reassure the world, Nigerians and the families of the remaining kidnapped Chibok girls and Leah Sharebu of the Dapchi School girls that this administration will not relent in our efforts to see that they are all released. I also want to reassure all Nigerians that the issue of Farmers and Herdsmen clashes is being tackled and all those found culpable would be brought to justice. Let me quickly remind us at this point to always be tolerant, loving and ready to give peace a chance.” Buhari reiterated what he

said to the Christian Association of Nigeria, Northern Chapter, that none of our religions or cultures permitted the killing of one person by another. Borno State Governor Kashim Shettima, who spoke at the occasion, said triumphantly that, “we have cut the rubicon of insurgency in the Northeast, Thank God, we have come to the end of insurgency. Suicide attack is a sign of weakness, not strength.” The Minister of Defence, Brigadier-General Mansur Dan Ali (rtd), commended the army for establishing a motorcycle battalion that is enhancing quick mobility and providing security in areas of unfavourable vehicular movements, and the Air Force for setting up rapid response groups in the six geopolitical zones of the country. He assured that, “appropriate measures are being put in place to address security challenges in the nation; the Armed Forces are currently handling Operation Delta Safe in the South-South, Operation Safe Haven in the North Central and Operation Awatse to combat militant activities in the Arepo general area and other parts of the Southwest. Recently, the Nigerian Army established Operation Whirl Stroke to tackle insecurity in the North Central states.” In his speech, the Chief of Defence Staff, General Gabriel Olonishakin, said that the military operations in the Northeast were moving from engagements of a combat nature to humanitarian and civilian support services to assist the victims of the insurgency to return to their communities which they were forced to abandon. The Chief of Army Staff, General Tukur Buratai said the choice of Monguno for the 2018 events was intended to celebrate the achievements of the army in its combat efficiency, civilmilitary relations and its efforts in research, development and technological attainments. He added that the army had accomplished the President’s objective of stabilizing the Northeast and other parts of the country, and assured of their unwavering support and loyalty to the President and the constitution. On arrival at the Kinnasara Army barracks in Monguno, President Buhari inspected military equipment on display by the 21 Specialized Corps of the Nigerian Army, and inaugurated the first indigenous Mines Resistant and Ambush Armoured Vehicles (MARAPS). Before his departure, the President also toured one of largest camps housing Internally Displaced Persons, IDPs in Monguno town.

Generator fume kills lovers in Delta Nosa Akenzua, Asaba Tragedy struck in the early hours of Friday, in Ozoro community, Isoko North local government area of Delta state when fume emitted from generator with an odour allegedly killed a 43-year old man identified as Uridihi Mike and his girlfriend in their room. It was gathered that the lovers had gone to sleep after having a good time with neighbours, and left their generating set on, at the corridor due to power failure. The love birds did not wake up the following day. A neighbour to the deceased, Mabel Ejiro told our reporter: “the man’s girlfriend, Josephine

Okor, was my friend. We used the generator together; Josephine and the boyfriend went inside their room, but left the generator on. We live at number 13, Urude Road, Ozoro. The following morning, we found smoke everywhere in the house, and the generator was covered with smoke. We forced the door opened, and found the lovers dead on the floor of their room”. The police spokesman in the state, DSP Andrew Aniamaka, who confirmed the incident to our reporter, said “we took statement from the deceased neighbours; we found them dead inside their room; it’s the generator fume emitting odour which killed them. However, investigation is ongoing, no arrest has been made for now; we took their bodies to the mortuary in Ozoro

community central hospital”. It was gathered that there has been frequent cases of generator fume killings in Ozoro community in recent times, a situation residents who spoke to our reporter blamed on regular power failure in the Ozoro community. “We don’t get power supply regularly in Ozoro community hence the use of generator always, and the effects had been frequent cases of death. We want BEDC to improve power supply regularly to avoid frequent cases of generator fume killings,” the angry residents added. As at the time of this report, residents, including relations of generator fume killing, were shouting themselves hoarse over the bizarre incident, while blaming the lover’s death on poor power supply by BEDC.

role in addressing challenges that party faced in the past, Secondus said the former CBN governor was a very straight forward man who had zero tolerance for corruption. He said “Among all the other leaders, late former Vice President Alex Ekwueme was a founding father and Adamu Ciroma was one of the pillars of the party behind the formation of what we know today as the largest political party in Africa. “By the grace of God something will be done to immortalise them. We will consult with other leaders but right now we are in a state of mourning, by the time we are through with it we will come out with something,” he said. Ekiti guber: APC is taking over Ekiti – Oshiomhole Tom Okpe, Abuja As the Ekiti state’s Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), government led by Ayo Fayose winds down, the All Progressives Congress (APC) said it is prepared to take over governance in the Saturday’s governorship election. The APC National Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole announced that he will lead the party to a mega rally in the state on Tuesday next week to campaign for Ekiti people to vote for the APC candidate, Kayode Fayemi. “I believe by 10th, Tuesday next week, another mega rally will be held to close campaigns and I believe that people of Ekiti State are now very much aware of what the issues are, they will go to make a sensible judgment and we are very certain that it will be in favour of our candidate”, he said. Oshiomhole who briefed journalists

in Abuja ahead the election also accused Governor Ayodele Fayose of the PDP of mopping up Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), which is evident that the party is panicking of obvious defeat. “There is no better evidence than the fact that PDP is panicking. You must have heard the report that, in clear violation of electoral Act, the outgoing Governor of Ekiti State, Fayose has instructed the civil servants, principals and headmasters of schools to retrieve PVCs from civil servants because he’s afraid. “They are panicking, while we are asking them to collect PVCs, they are retrieving PVCs. We have evidence now that they have even issued queries to workers, including teachers for refusing to surrender their PVCs. I don’t think you need any better evidence, that the sitting governor is panicking, we can’t wait to have him sweep away on the 14th of July, God willing by the good people of Ekiti State through a free and fair election

on the basis of one man, one vote; one woman, one vote”, the Chairman stated. According to Comrade Oshiomhole, Fayose who was rigged into office with the support of the then PDP controlled Federal Government which took money from NNPC to fund his campaign and deployed military to coerced Ekiti people to vote for him was afraid that APC would use similar mechanism, announcing that APC having dismantled the PDP rigging machinery, would not replicate the rigging style of PDP but would wrestle power in Ekiti through persuasion and with the tested and trusted candidate like Fayemi. The APC National Chairman also dismissed what he described as the campaign of calumny against the APC by PDP that, “a vote for Fayemi is ceding Ekiti land to herdsmen”, noting that Fayemi had managed stakeholders in Ekiti very well and there was no farmers, herdsmen conflict under him.

Times against Crime Customs’ CG strike force intercepts another truck of rice in Oyo Joy Anyim, Lagos

Tupac

How we killed Tupac, Keefe D According to a Tuesday report by the Mirror, leads are coming out that will help to unravel the mystery behind the gruesome murder 22 years ago of America’s rapper and entertainer Tupac Amaru Shakur. He was gunned down in a drive-by shooting on September 7 1996 and died in hospital six days later, but nobody was ever caught or tried for his shock death. His murder remains one of the biggest unsolved mysteries in the entertainment world... until now. A new Netflix series, Unsolved: The Tupac and Biggie Murders, contains expert analysis of the gang war between LA’s Bloods - the gang Tupac was affiliated to - and their mortal rivals the Crips. One of the most popular theories surrounding Tupac’s murder is that he and Death Row Records CEO Suge Knight were involved in the beating of a Crips member, Orlando ‘Baby Lane’ Anderson, on the night of Pac’s death. And now Anderson’s uncle, Keefe D - real name Duane Keith Davis - has

confessed that he knew who pulled the trigger that fateful night. “I was a Compton kingpin, drug dealer, I’m the only one alive who can really tell you story about the Tupac killing,” said Keefe D, the Daily Star reports. People have been pursuing me for 20 years, I’m coming out now because I have cancer. And I have nothing else to lose. All I care about now is the truth.” Keefe’s shocking confession was caught on tape when he had immunity from prosecution, which aired in a different documentary, Death Row Chronicles. He revealed that he, Anderson and two others - Terrence ‘T-Brown’ Brown and DeAndre ‘Dre’ Smith - were in a Cadillac driving around Vegas looking for Tupac on the night of the murder, as revenge for his nephew’s beating. They were on their way to the 662 Club where Tupac was due to perform, but got bored of waiting when the rapper was running late. The foursome went to buy alcohol, but heard women on the sidewalk screaming Tupac’s name

and ‘bust a U-turn’ to pull up alongside Tupac’s BMW, which was being driven that night by Suge. “All the chicks were like ‘Tupac!’, and he was like ‘hey’ like a celebrity, like he was in a parade,” said Keefe. If he wouldn’t even have been out the window we would have never have seen him,” he said but refused however to tell the Death Row Chronicles documentary makers who pulled the trigger. “Going to keep it for the code of the streets, it just came from the backseat, bro,” he said on camera,” he added but the confession in the taped confession filmed during his immunity, Keefe said it was his nephew Orlando who fired the gun. “I gave it to Dre and Dre was like ‘no, no, no’ and Lane was like – popped the dudes,” he claimed. He leaned over and rolled down the window and popped them.” Anderson himself continued to deny responsibility for Tupac’s murder his whole life - he was killed during a shootout in LA in 1998.

He however promised that the zonal commander will make all routes in the South -West hot and unaccessible for smugglers. He said, “Less than a week after the zonal coordinator in Ogun Axis intercepted 3000 bags of rice, they were able to arrest another truck load of rice concealed inside gravel sand.” “We know the smugglers are desperate and smart but we are many steps ahead of them, the interception we made was based on intelligence because we can all see how desperate they are to smuggle these contraband into the country. “The seizure is attributed to the intelligence provided by the Customs Intelligence Unit and my team and we have vowed to make the southwest zone a no go area for smugglers and make sure they count their loses no mattter their antics. 11 Life & Times

Benue State-born music damsel, Imelda Ada Okwori, who goes by the stage name, “Imelda J,” is one of the fast-rising hip-hop artistes in the country. She has been in the industry for the past 10 years, making her marks in the entertainment world. In this exclusive interview with DOOSUUR IWAMBE, Okwori, reveals among others that female folks in the industry are faced with sexual harassment code named “body ritual” which she described as the biggest impediment to their success. Excerpts: Who is Imelda J? I am a musician, a Naija hip-pop artiste but I define my specific sound, “Naija pop sound” and I’m also a humanitarian. I own an NGO, Imelda Jane initiative for women with disabilities in Nigeria. Why did you choose music? I grew up into music because my mother was in music back then. Though she could not take it up to the stage where I am today because the things she needed to facilitate that dream were not there for her. She saw the same talent in me so she groomed me in her own way even though I never knew I was going to take it up as a career but I was doing it as a passion in secondary school up to my university days. So basically I grew up with music. What sort of challenges have you faced? As a woman, it has not been easy because you go to places you have sexual advances from people. When they see that you are good looking and also your determination to get to the top, they tend to make sexual advances and by the time you don’t want to do that it becomes a major challenge. That is one of the major obstacles I’ve faced. If you want to sell your body off to get to the top, how many people will you go out with? So I decided that it’s going to be slow, it’s going to be steady but I will get there. This happens mostly because when you don’t have financial back up, it becomes a hurdle because you are going to beg for one form of assistance or the other. They call it ‘body ritual’. Somebody told me, ‘Imelda you are the one delaying yourself because you don’t want to do the ‘body ritual’. Whenever you are ready’ but I told him I will not do it. As we all know, the Music industry is mostly dominated with the male counterparts. The females up there are very few in Nigeria. There are so many females that are underground and some who could not compromise their integrity, and as well got tired at some point, giving up on their dreams. It’s very challenging not to waver. Though there are still good and sincere men but very few. They are rare and it takes the grace of God to meet such people. Those few ones are the ones that have given me courage and hope for a better future. Where I come from, we don’t have people that support entertainment; they only identify with success. When you get there, they can come and identify with you but they find it difficult to identify with you when you are climbing up. Look at Bogus Ikwe, Tuface, Black face, Terry G, they are all from Benue State. Financial aspect has been so challenging but God has been using so many ways to help me. I have decided not to look up to any man but to God to help me in that area. What your view on Entertainment industry and where you expect it to be in the next ten years? The entertainment industry in Nigeria is growing so fast and so far, so good. If you take the memory lane back to the past five years, you will agree with me that we have greatly improved. The music, quality of videos, sound and acceptance. You go to our clubs, you go to places, you barely hear foreign music. And so in the industry, I see Nigerian music taking over. With people like Davido, Wizkid, Tiwa, Dbanj, Tuface

breaking boundaries, I believe that we are going very far. The only thing is that the success is individual, we don’t have structures on ground. We need support from the Federal government. I am appealing with the Federal Government to create the entertainment ministry because the industry is wide. Once that is done, there will be employment. Look at me now, I am Imelda J but there are so many people that make up Imelda J as a brand. My costume, studio works and interviews. If you look at the total package, there is a director, producer, etc. It’s a very big industry that if looked into very well, it is going to not just create job opportunities but will also improve the Nigerian economy. I look forward to the time where by big investors will come to Nigeria to invest. They are scared because of piracy. If that can be controlled, in the next five ten years from now, the industry will go far. How do you cope with competition in the music industry? Talking about breaking out, I know I am unique in my own way. One thing that stands me out is my voice. The late Babatunde Okungbowa, popularly known by his stage name as OJB Jezreel, was the proper person that produced me in Lagos then. He was able to bring out the best in me because of my natural voice. When you have that you will be able to go to places. Also on stage, I believe in entertaining my audience. That stands me out. I’ve never been in competition with anybody. I’ve always been in competition with myself, I wake up everyday appreciating God and I try to bring out the better person in me. Just like the sky is big for many flies to fly everyday and none has ever clashed because there is space for everybody. I am not in competition with anybody, I know I am unique and that is why I don’t follow trend. Like the song I just released, I didn’t follow trend. I did what I know; this is my brand. What should fans expect from you? My fans should expect a lot because Imelda J. has been working for so many years. I’ve recorded so many songs and so it is time for me to start dropping those songs and videos. I hope to get better everyday because I have a very good set of fans. They love the message in my songs, videos. So I have to keep the good work going. My fans should keep expecting good music, videos, sound and above all, I promise never to disappoint them. What are the Ingredients that distinguish your music from others? Looking back to where I come from which is Benue State, we have a specific sound, we have our kind of perception; that is the crude passion and that is the kind of music my mother used to play when I was a child. I picked from those sounds, then I mixed it up with the pop which gives the music a new flavor. We have what we call ‘’Itsaka’’ “Agugu”in my language. I mixed that into my sound. That distinguished my music from any other sound. My mother came to visit me in Lagos when I released one of my songs and she was almost moved to tears because she saw more of her original songs coming back to life in the songs I released in my dialect.

Imelda sJm:ent,

Sexual haras t n e m i d e p m i t s e bigg for female artistes

Which Hit song brought you to lime light? The track I did with OJB Jezreel got me an international award and that track remains ever green. Sometimes I am tempted to remix it but then the originality can not be there because OJB is not there again. He has this spiritual sound when it comes to music. Who are your role models? I have a lot but my number one role model is my mother. Followed by 2face Idibia. I love Beyoncé when it comes to her strength on stage, like I said they are many. Beyonce, Jenifer Lopez, Tina Tuna, Tracy chapman, the late Micheal Jackson and then in Nigeria, the passion, people that drives me are Tiwa Savage, Yemi Alade. Some are my favourite role models because of their lyrics, humanitarian services, etc. Is there anything that makes you stand out from other women? Yes. Imelda J is very brave. I am a goal-getter. I don’t give up so easily when it comes to what I love to do, what I want to achieve and all that. I don’t remember if I am a woman. I hustle

like the guys do. I believe I have all it takes to make it in life so I just have to do what is right. I don’t believe in waiting for any man. God has a purpose for creating me. I am using this opportunity to call out on every young woman like me to stand up and fight for what is yours. You are a mother to your generation. God has a purpose for creating you. Do not wait for any man to live up to you before you can make yourself happy. Make sure you fulfill your purpose on earth. When you do, whatever a man gives to you is ‘jara’. Believe me, they will respect you more. All in all, I always tell myself. ‘Imelda J, be the change you want to see’. What are your hobbies? Shopping, singing, playing keyboard, dancing, swimming, laundry, cooking, reading, listening to music, traveling for site seeing and tourism, and meeting good friends. Your favourite food? Vegetables and fruits, Okoho soup with pounded yam. I can never get tired of Okoho soup. My grandmother used to call me “Ada come home and eat your Okoho soup”.

After spending some times in the United State of America, Shaffy Bello Akinrimisi is fully back to Nigeria and has featured in quite a number of movies one which was her role as Adesua in the unique Telenovelas series ‘ Taste of Love’ . Shaffy is equally a wife and mother of two teenagers (22 & 20 respectively) who are based in the USA. Despite been over 40, the quintessential lady of the screen still wax stronger each day. In this chat with MUTIAT ALLI, she talks about transition from being a musician to an actor, her role in soon to be released movie ‘ Lara and the beat’, secret to her youthful look, and style amongst others. Enjoy… What character are you playing in the coming movie ‘Lara and the Beat? Well I play the character of Jide’s mother who happened to be Nigeria’s celebrated Disc Jockey ‘DJ Xclusive’. My character in the movie loves Jide’s girlfriend but she is particular if there are wealth, if the girlfriend is worthy of her son and in all she is a woman who is particular about material things. Known for playing loveable motherly roles, how easy or tough was it for you to pull this off? When I was called on board, we didn’t know what shape the character will take but when I got on set I felt like I should play a very razz woman with a little bit of Lagosian kind of feature and at the end of the day we were able to achieve it. One fantastic thing about this particular role is the fact that it is one of the different kinds of feel I want to play. Although I have played such character before but Mama Jide just excites me. Did your expectation meets with acting alongside Xclusive knowing that it’s his first time on a movie set? Well I must commend his zeal on the job, he was willing to go beyond his comfort zone; he is indeed a sweetheart. He was a gentleman on set. I did not have many scenes in the movie but we had one day together and in that one day we made magic. He is not actor we all know because he came in feeling nervous but at the end he was amazing. What do think attracted you to the script? The Biola Alabi Media (BAM) name attracted me to the movie, they are known to do good work; they did Banana Island Ghost. When you see people doing great work and they have a good reputation in the industry, when they call you, you drop everything and oblige. So when they sent me script and I knew only had two scenes, I didn’t mind because I still wanted to do it. For me it not about how many scenes you have in a movie but the impact you can have even with just a scene because your one scene could actually what makes the film. The movie touched several themes; which amongst it do you love the most? The movie made conscious effort to touch themes that includes fashion, friendship, accountability amongst others and I must say I find all appropriate and dear to me. There is virtually everything you want to train your children on that the movie did not make reference to. It talks about relationship with people, when you fall and how do you handle it. The bottom line of this movie is that fact it touches the fact that a lot of times things don’t go the way we project it to be. I think it’s a film for everyone to see, you would love the quality of work and the people behind it. Was there any emotional moment for you on set of the movie?

Honestly not at all because I was just on set for day while they have been shooting for over a month. 1997 a lot of people fell in love with your personality when you featured in the song ‘Love me Jeje’, how much of does moment is available to be shared? Well I still have lots of love to give out; but the fact still remains that I am still who I am, I have grown as person personally, professionally as actor, as a singer and I only wish that as I grow older; I am still very much wiser. 1997 still date, a different person might have involve but the through idea of the kind of person I am has not still changed. Are there still plans for you to go back into music? Music is still very much part of me because it will never depart from me; is a now a matter of finding the right time now. I still get nudge in the heart to do something cozy like an MTV unplugged kind of thing You have explored music and movie; is there is any other talent of yours that is yet to see? Keep watching!! One of the things in a human’s life is growth and also I think for everyone we must learn that even when I tell you I am not doing music anymore; in a year I might decide that I want to do it. For now I am trying to be a better person in this chosen field (Acting), studying to be a director, producer and doing bigger things in Nollywood. However when I feel like I want to take a break in all that and go back to music, I will do that. If you have the opportunity to meet your younger self, what advice would you give? I will tell her not to be so hard on herself; there is so much more, make those mistakes. I have a 22 years old daughter; sometime when I look at her, she has lots of ideas and she be like, Mum I feel I should have grown pass this stage doing better things and I will go back to tell myself just like I am telling her now. It’s ok to make mistake now, calm down!! It’s coming and it will happen. If your autobiography is to be commissioned today, what will the title be and why? The title will definitely be ‘The woman who lives by grace and grace did not leave’ Despite your busy schedules, how do maintain the home front? It’s not been easy but what works for me is the fact that I set my priorities and one of it is that I want to be there for my children and they equally respect me for what I do but the beautiful thing is that I have grown up children; you can’t compare me with actors that little children. I am at the stage where in a month we might not see but we communicate via telephone call because technology has made easier because my children are not here.

You are over 40 and still look ravishing, what is the secret to your youthful look? The secret is just take care of yourself, I tell a lot of people when you take care of yourself; your body will thank you. I think the biggest thing also is to feel good, forget the outer layer, the inner layer is the most important I must because when a woman is truly happy and she feels she is driven by her purpose, people will see that and that is the beauty. There is no reason every woman out there should not look good, Ankara fabric out there is as cheap as a thousand naira, give it a tailor, pack your hair and look good. Always make good first impression not necessarily expensive. How do you un-wine? I listen to music, I read a lot and I love to travel. If we are do a search of your library what kind of books is stocked there? Seriously!! A range of suspense, drama, and romance; and also the most important books to me are books that change your life thinking, books that challenge you to think differently. I am opera fan. Knowing that you acted in countless movies; which role did you find more challenging for you as a person? I think Ovi’s voice was one challenge for me, it was fun because I loved playing the character; most challenged for me will was then I had to play a 60/70 year grandmother and they made me up but the challenging aspect of it was the fact that I needed to sound older but I dare to challenge our writers to write more challenging roles for us; don’t stigmatize actors because a character usually plays the role of mother in a movie does not mean she can’t do well in other character. We are really not challenging yet our industry. Do you have dream roles? Well let me just state here that I am still pregnant as an actor and I want to give birth to good characters. One significant thing life has taught you being an actor? Life has taught me that fame does not bring happiness; unfortunately on social

media you out the good day for the best day, one of things I would love to do is to approach younger girls and let them know your self-confidence matters a lot. We all have good days and bad days; don’t ever feel that the pictures you see are who we are. Being an actor has made me realize that people want to place me on peddle stone and they want to see you as hero but meanwhile we are not heroes but actors. The heroes out there are the mothers, teacher teaching in public school, the single fathers and mothers; those are the heroes. What is your advice to celebrities who bring up their personal issues on social media? For me as a person, I have chosen to keep my private life private but my work life is what my social media account is all about which you will always see but whatever happens in my home is my private life. My candid advice is take your family issues off social media and put out more of your work for the world to see. What does style means to you? Do you what makes you comfortable; everybody has what suits them. Whatever makes you happy and comfy is your style. As a celeb, do you patronize made in Nigeria products? Yes!!! 100% because I am an Ankara kind of person, I patronize lots of stores online ranging from 5k to 10k which does not mean I can’t afford luxury things. How do you manage your finances as an actor? Well I have two children and one is out of college; so if you have kids in college and you have to send them the dollars, you will manage the account to the last dollar. I think when we were younger we made the mistake of just trying to look good at all time; if I knew what I knew now, I would have made wiser choice but I believe when you know better, you do better. Spend your money right and invest but you if you don’t know what to invest in buy properties, land because it will never go out style. For me now, I do lots of investment and most importantly I invest in my children because they are the future.

Who says celebrities cannot find true love then it will be better to ask Nollywood actress, Karo, as the actress has been secretly enjoying romantic time with her lover for a while now. The actress made her mark in the Nollywood industry for several years before taking out time to study her man while she also engages herself in other businesses to support herself. Karo has been in the US for some time now and gists from grapevine has it that the actress is planning to settle down with her US based lover. Unlike many who would have loves to flaunt their man on every

social media handle, the actress chose to keep everything to herself so as to avoid `stories that touch the heart. It is not certain if the wedding will be taking place abroad or her man will have to move down to Nigeria with her but whichever is the case; we wish her happy married life in advance. The actress absence in the movie industry for some months now has been deliberate as she recently went to the prestigious Film school in Los Angeles, to equip herself more on the nittygritty of movie making and she all set to storm the industry with her own production outfit soon.

I have a crush on Biodun Okeowo - Fast rising actor, Olushola Micheal Though new in the industry, fast rising actor, Olushola Micheals has revealed that he has an unending crush on Nollywood curvy actress, Biodun Okeowo better known as Omo Butty. Olushola further disclosed that having followed her acting career for years and her radiant beauty, she is one of the reason I joined the movie industry when I reached out to show my intention to be part of the industry, she was available to help me out in connecting with other actors who have now turned business partners. sentiment and to refrain themselves from making inflammatory utterances that can promote conflicts and disunity in the country, Prophet Ituen admonished them to always pray for peace and unity in the country and always display neutrality and

fatherly role at all times. Ituen, The prophet who is highly regarded for his accurate prophecies, stated this recently when a group of members of Christian Fellowship of Nigeria paid him a courtesy call in Lagos.

Ekiti guber poll: Fayemi dismisses allegation of instigating DSS to arrest teachers over voters’ card The governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), in the July 14 election in Ekiti State, Dr Kayode Fayemi, has rubbished reports that he instigated the Department of State Services (DSS), to arrest some school teachers in the state. Reports had it that DSS operatives had allegedly stormed Ola-Oluwa Muslims Grammar School, Ado-Ekiti, to arrest school officials allegedly caught in the act of illegally collecting teachers’ voters’ cards. Against this backdrop, the state governor, Ayodele Fayose had reportedly accused Fayemi of

influencing security agents to arrest the teachers. However, Kayode Fayemi’s Campaign Organisation insisted that the former Minister of Mines and Steel Development had no hands in the arrest of the teachers. In a statement by the Director of Media and Publicity of his Campaign Organisation, Wole Olujobi, Fayemi said, “Fayose has refused to relent in the illegal collection of teachers’ voter cards. “There are reports of invitation extended to some teachers who refused to submit their voters’ cards to the Teaching Service Commission on the

order of the governor to answer queries for refusing to illegally transfer their voter cards to illegal hands, which prompted DSS to act to protect the teachers from illegal possession of their cards by unauthorised persons. “Fayose is hereby warned against unguarded statements and reckless lies that Fayemi sent his security aides to arrest school principals. “Fayemi does not have the power to direct DSS to arrest innocent citizens. In fact, DSS agents do not need the directive of even President Muhammadu Buhari to carry out their legal duties,” the statement added.

Ex-PDP woman leader, Omotayo eulogised at 75 It was celebration galore in Lagos recently, as former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) South West Woman Leader, Mother Celestial Odunmolorun Omotayo turned 75 in grand style. The event, which was held at the sanctuary of the Celestial Church of Christ, Ogudu Expressway Cathedral, Ogudu-Ori-Oke, Lagos, was well attended by her business and political associates across the country and in the Diaspora, who showered encomiums on her for using her resources to transform lives and touching humanity in many ways, as well as spreading the gospel of Christ without fear or favour. The Ogun State born- female politician, who served as the Special Adviser on Inter-Governmental Affairs to former Ogun State governor, Olusegun Osoba, thanked God for seeing her through rigorous moments of life. The Iya Ijo of many Parishes of the church recalls vividly that she joined the Celestial Church of Christ miraculously at Ogudu Expressway Parish (now Cathedral) in 1996, which only God Know how and why He converted her to Christianity from Islam.

Her conversion according to her was with signs and revelation in dreams and visions both at day and night, “Jesus Christ appeared to me many times in many ways which baffled me as to why I should be in the midst of white garment people, being a Muslim by birth.” According to her, “When I could not cope with the pressure from the Holy Spirit, I had to change the position of my bed and also moved from Ijebu- Ode to Lagos and later to London, but all to no avail until I finally pitched my tent with the Church for evangelism purposes,”he disclosed. “Because God had blessed me abundantly with all the necessities of life that is, children, money, peace of mind, good health and beauty, but the way of God is different from that of mortal beings. “At God’s appointed time I had to join the Church of Christ voluntarily after seeking spiritual interpretation of all the signs,” she recalled with nostalgia. While thanking God for His mercies over the years, Odunmolorun said for almost two decades in the church she has no regrets because God has proved to the world that He needs her in Celestial

Church of Christ,, having used her in many ways and areas to transform lives and win souls for Christ.” She added that God commanded her to establish two evangelism crusade ministries for the spread of the gospel. Speaking on the occasion, two of her children, Alhaji Femi Omotayo and Sola Ige, expressed gratitude to God for using their mother to transform their lives spiritually. Also speaking, the Spiritual Leader of the church, Reverend E. M. F. Oshoffa, described the celebrant as an ebullient virtuous woman of substance who dedicated her life to the service of God and humanity. Quoting from Psalm 90:12 and Mathew 6:33, the Celestial leader enjoined Nigerians to learn from the example of the female politician cum evangelist by seeking first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all other things shall be added onto them. Those present at the occasion include members and top hierarchy of the church Worldwide, Shepherd-In-Charge, Prophet David Olaleye, retired and serving political office holders, among others.

Former commissioner, Lanre Razak, eyes APC ticket for Lagos East seat in 2019 A chieftain of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), in Lagos State, Chief Lanre Razak appears nursing an ambition to contest for the Lagos State East Senatorial seat in next year’s election. The Epe born former State Commissioner for Public Transportation, according to our checks is already consulting stake holders within his constituency with a view to seeking and obtaining their consent for the project. The astute politician, who had once risen to the position of a National Deputy Chairman of thedefunct All Peoples Party (APP) has been a political kingmaker of sort in Lagos State and beyond. A close associate of the elder statesman, who craves anonymity, confided in our reporter that, “Chief Razak’s aspiration to be a senator is borne out of his undying love to serve his good people in that capacity.” All efforts to hear directly from the horse’s mouth proved abortive at the time of going

Razak

to press as one of his aides simply told our reporter that, “ Baba is busy now because he is preparing for his son’s wedding coming up this weekend.” If he succeeds, he will be taking over from the incumbent, Senator Gbenga Ashafa, who is believed to also be interested in returning to the senate, even as many other aspirants have also signified interest in contesting to seat on the platform of the APC.

The 11-yearold hyper realist artist, Kareem Waris Olamilekan who sketched a portrait of French President, Emmanuel Macron during his visit to the New Afrika Shrine last week has profusely thanked the Managing Director of Ecobank Mr. Charles Kie for giving him the opportunity of a lifetime to showcase his talent before president Macron and Nigeria’s finest audience that comprising the political class, musicians, Nollywood artists and a host of others. Kareem Waris Olamilekan who spoke during a thank you visit to the Managing Director of Ecobank in Lagos said :“I thought it was a joke when a staff of Ecobank called to say they want me to sketch a portrait of the French President which the Bank will present to him during his visit to the Africa Shrine. I was and am still happy for this opportunity. In fact my friends and people I do not know have since been calling me to congratulate me. Even my parents are not left out. It is a family dream come true I must say”. Olamilekan is a pencil

artist, painter and prosthetic makeup artist. He began drawing at six, starting with cartoon and comics and by eight he started drawing professionally. He was identified by Ecobank as a talented young artist, some time ago and was given the opportunity to paint and present a portrait of Emmanuel Macron for the bank to present to the French President during the “Celebration of African Culture” event’ at the New Afrika Shrine. Responding, Managing Director, Ecobank Nigeria, Charles Kie, said the Bank is glad that it is helping the Artist to realize his dream. He said the Bank recognized the abundant talents inherent in the artist and decided to empower him to sketch Macron’s portrait, adding that it was in line with the Bank’s policy of recognizing and developing talents across the Africa continent. In his words, “As a pan African financial institution, we are glad to have empowered Olamilekan to achieve his dream. This is what we stand for. We will monitor his progress and support him to realize his potentials,” he said.

17 Business Interview

Air Peace not threatened by new national carrier - Iwarah What does emerging the best airline in West Africa mean to Air Peace? Emerging the best airline in West Africa means a lot to Air Peace and when we say a lot, sincerely it means a lot because this is the first time we are having such recognition outside the shores of Nigeria. Within Nigeria we have our base; we have received a lot of awards. Just this year alone, we have received over five awards from reputable organisations and this one coming outside Nigeria is a whole lot for us and is coming less than 18 months of taken our big steps out of Africa. We launched our Accra route in February 2017 and this is June 2018 and we have been recognised that we are doing something great on the West Coast of Africa and this we cannot appreciate enough. Are you looking at the possibility of interlining with other airlines in the region? Definitely, as you have heard, interlining is a complex arrangement that must be looked at critically. Air Peace is based on sincerity and our focus is to have a enough support to impact the society in great ways. One of the ways we do that is through job creation, another way we do that is through impacting the economies of the countries we are operating into. So definitely we are thinking in that direction, but is not what will be done in a hurry, already we are interlining on international level with a lot of groups I cannot mention here for confidentiality purpose for now. But we are thinking in that light, because we cannot be everywhere. Our vision is to create seamless connections and seamless connections cannot be done by Air Peace alone. When we think we cannot be strong enough or cannot fit in into our immediate operations, we are ready to partner with others. Interlining with others to ensure our guests get the best of air service, that is our goal, but we will do it with people who are also sincere and are ready to respect their honour and are ready to show integrity because we are raised on the foundation of integrity. We will not just go into interlining for the sake of it, we want to do it in a way that works, and that will impact air travel that will democratise air travel that is our goal, so we have nothing against that. How can you rate your operations so far on the West Coast and where are you going next? Our operations on the West Coast have been so marvellous, we launched the operations in February 2017 in Accra, we promised to ensure that from this platform we reach out to other nations on the West Coast. Now barely a year after that in February 2018, we launched three other routes on the West Coast, talking about Freetown, Banjul and Dakar. We are doing marvellously well on these routes, the testimonies from our guests is that the intervention we made have solved their problems and now we have a lot of persons who can travel on this route seamlessly and that is just the beginning. In a few weeks we are going to start Monrovia, we are going to do Monrovia Accra, Monrovia-Abuja, Monrovia Lagos, is going to be a whole lot, we are also thinking about other nations like Gabon, Lome Abidjan. So is going to be a total job on the West Coast. We want to ensure that challenges on the west coast are addressed perfectly, so it has been marvellous, the support we are getting on this route is really huge, you see people sincerely supporting it because they know that what we are doing, we are doing sincerely because we are not ready to just come in and take from people and go away, no, we are

on the fourth one because we take our international

In three years, Air Peace has increased its fleet to a size of 24 aircraft. In this interview with CHUKWUEMEKE IWELUNMO, Air Peace corporate communications manager, Mr. Chris Iwarah, speaks on the expansion drive of the airline on the West Coast, their international operations, acquisition of fourth B777, plans to interline with other airlines and what it means to win west African airline of the year among other issues. ploughing back, we are also really fixing economies. We are fixing economies on the west coast, now we have people who want to travel whether business or leisure, we are meeting their needs and we are just beginning and we hope to deepen it, we hope to push it further. I want to assure the air travelling public that the best is yet to come, they should just keep trusting us and keep doing what they have been doing in our support and at the end of the day, we will all go back smiling. You said your aircraft has increased to 24, so how many is on ground now? It is not that we are planning to increase the aircraft to 24, we already have 24 aircraft. Our total fleet size is 24 aircraft; we are even planning of increasing that. Like I said, when we started our international operations, we immediately acquired that two Boeing 777, now we have acquired one more to make it a third, we are concluding arrangement

‘

operations as a big deal, we are not willing to jump in and jump out, we are going to give the best. We are challenging theories, perceptions, perceptions that nothing good can come from Nigeria that nothing good can come from Africa. These are perceptions we are challenging and we are saying no, given a solid plan, given the right condition we are going out there to do well. As I said yesterday that is not also for you to sit down and say African Airlines are not doing well, Nigerian airlines are not doing well, we are saying no, that is not the truth, though we had a little challenge, a very negligible challenge when you think of challenge airlines in Nigeria face. So we are not going to fail, we have a solid arrangement we are working on and we know will work. You have concluded arrangements for the 3rd B 777 and also adding a fourth one

Once we finish that, other planes we are going acquire will not pass through this stringent regulatory requirement because once we induct, that shows that we can operate this planes we have acquired, that is what we are doing nothing more than that

,

when the one you have on ground is not flying, why? This is the first time we are using a Boeing 777 plane and is not automatic, is not enough to bring in the planes and you begin to fly. If it were to be the B 737 aircraft we have used before, if it comes in into the system, the Regulator comes in and conduct their minor checks and is inducted and we begin to fly with them. But this is the first time we are using a B777, in fact is a record in the Nigerian aviation industry. Is not just going to go in, there are processes, processes we are complying with in conjunction with the Regulator. This week, we did our partial evacuation with the Embraer 145 and there is also the requirement of doing demonstration flights which we are already arranging, we just held meeting with the Regulator this week, so we are arranging with them. Is a whole lot of process, training is being looked at. Our pilots are going for training, so is a big arrangement, is not what will just happen overnight. We are losing money having the aircraft sitting there, we want to ensure that what is done will be properly done. We are not ready to cut corners, we are complying with all the requirements and once we start, is going to be good, is better we go in and do it well than to jump in and jump out. Again is a safety matter, we must ensure that everything that needs to be done to make sure that the aircraft meets all the regulatory requirements, we are going to do, we are losing money but we are not thinking so much in terms of money. We value the lives of our guests and crew beyond any monetary considerations and that is what we are saying. Shortly we will be starting all that both with our B777 and Embraer 145 operations which we are using for our no city is left behind operation. So we are working seriously and that is why it appears to be delayed, nothing more than that. We are trying to comply with regulatory requirements by ensuring that all the plans we have are well done. Once we finish that, other planes we are going acquire will not pass through this stringent regulatory requirement because once we induct, that shows that we can operate this planes we have acquired, that is what we are doing nothing more than that. The Embraer, two have come in and others are undergoing checks outside the shores of Nigeria we are working in conjunction with the Regulators to ensure that everything is in place, shortly a lot more of these planes will come in, in a matter of months a lot more of the planes will come in as they are going through all sorts of checks to ensure they are air worthy. You have heard the discussions here on why airlines fail in Africa, how prepared are you to ensure that you do not fail also where all these other airlines failed? All the issue raised, the challenges are not new, some of the issues people raised, some are pushed beyound what they really are, some are raised with a whole lot of fear because of people who are pushing them. The situation you have in Europe and in America is quite different from what we have here. What works in Europe and America may not be what will work here. We have our own peculiarities that people must understand, like when they talked about delays, in just one week, we had our aircraft going to Port Harcourt that could not land in Port-Harcourt because of persistent poor visibility, we had to divert twice to Owerri to land and once you divert like that, you have to wait as weather is not what you can predict. But I tell you that 95 percent of delays and cancellations are due to challenges like this and other challenges of sunset airports, so we have looked at these things, they are not new, others have faced them and have overcome.

PEBEC launches Report Kiosks at international airport Mathew Dadiya, Abuja The Presidential Enabling Business Environment Council (PEBEC) has formally commissioned, the PEBEC Report Kiosks (the Kiosk) at the international wing of the Murtala Muhammed Airport in Lagos. The Kiosks would serve as a self-service terminal, with customer service representatives to promote the PEBEC Report application (app). Dr. Jumoke Oduwole, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Industry, Trade and Investment who doubles as PEBEC Secretary, stated this on Friday. According to Oduwole, the app is the PEBEC’s official public service website for complaints and feedback on the service

delivery standards of select Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs). The kiosks are meant to promote the app and encourage private sector to give feedback about their airport and travel experience. The app is being scaled up to include more MDAs and provide wider coverage, she stated. She said, “The app was launched on 25 June 2018 at a special PEBEC meeting after a 6-month preparation period. The app has piloted with nine of the PEBEC priority MDAs (PPM); Citizens and Business Department, Corporate Affairs Commission, Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control, Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority, Nigeria Customs Service, Nigerian Police Force, Nigerian

Ports Authority and Standards Organisation of Nigeria. “The app is important because it: Makes it easy for anyone to resolve issues encountered when dealing with MDAs; strengthens federal enforcement, service delivery and public protection efforts on a national level (through filing a complaint); helps identify trends and tracks the issues that matter to Nigerian citizens. The app includes a feedback mechanism for MDAs, which have assigned administrators to handle complaints according to preagreed service level agreements (SLA). All administrators have been trained on how to handle complaints and feedback from the app within a 72-hour timeline. On June 27 2018, the Federal Executive Council also approved a directive on strict compliance by all MDAs to respond to complains within 72 hours.”

She added; “This webbased application is to foster transparency and efficiency in furtherance to the Executive Order 001 (EO1). Recall that the EO1 was signed on 18 May 2017 by Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo (SAN), then Acting President to promote transparency and efficiency in the business environment. “To foster a robust monitoring and evaluation process (M&E), EO1 mandated all MDAs to submit monthly reports to the office of the Head of Service and SERVICOM. The Enabling Business Environment Secretariat tracks compliance of select MDAs with EO1 directives. On June 25 2018, a 12-month anniversary report, tracking the performance of PPMs, was presented at the special PEBEC meeting in the presence of private sector stakeholders.”

10,000 Niger teachers to benefit from N2.1bn motorcycle loan Ten thousand public school teachers in Niger State are to benefit from the N2 .1 billion motorcycle loan in order to enhance productivity and provide mobility for those teaching in hard to reach rural areas. The scheme which was approved by the state executive council was announced on Friday by the state Commissioner for Education, Hajiya Fatima Madugu in Minna, the state capital was in fulfilment of Governor Abubakar Sani -Bello’s resolve to improve the

working condition of teachers in public schools. The Commissioner said the loan scheme essentially is for teachers in the basic education sector - primary and junior schools. According to her, “Niger State Government through the State Universal Primary Education Board (SUPEB) approached a commercial bank to obtained loan of N2.1 billion to procure motorcycles to be given out on loan to teachers in primary and junior secondary schools in the state to facilitate their movement.

“This initiative was packaged to improve the welfare of our teachers, especially those teaching in the hard to reach rural areas of the state and to further enhance their working condition, improve quality of teaching and motivate teachers. “After a thorough screening exercise which had all the stakeholders - Ministry of Education, SUBEB, the bank and Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), 10,000 beneficiaries of the scheme emerged out of the 22,367 teachers in the public primary and junior secondary

schools in the state”. The Commissioner said that the scheme which will soon be flagged off have beneficiaries in all the 3,166 primary schools and 60 junior secondary schools in the state. “All arrangements have been concluded and all necessary modalities carried out for the take off of the scheme. The repayment plan for the loan is 18 months and due diligence was carried out by the government in order to ensure only qualified teachers and those who are not indebted to any loan,” Madugu stated.

Chivita, a brand of CHI Limited, has entered into partnership with the Sugar and Cholesterol Control Foundation (SACCOF) to increase public awareness on the nutritional benefits of 100% fruit juice. At the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding in Lagos, President of SACCOF, Ademola Adesoye said the collaboration would boost research into sugar consumption and control. He said the partnership validated the commitment of Chivita to its ‘no-added sugar’ campaign Adesoye, a food technology expert, pointed out that the commitment was not only necessary for raising the awareness level but also critical to correcting the misconceptions about sugar consumption. He noted: “It is important Nigerians understand that they need sugar to carry out their basic tasks. What is bad is excess intake. And what could be normal for one person may be excessive for another. What determine the volume of sugar you require are your lifestyle and the amount of energy you need to discharge your responsibilities. “It is important to get the perspective right. The key message is that the simple sugars contained in fruit juices are mostly fructose which are naturally occurring in the intact structure of the respective raw fruits or vegetables, thereby making them very healthy and nutritional. Indeed, there have been cases where some people have low sugar level in their system and this is as bad as excess sugar. So, it is satisfying to know that Chivita, the leading juice manufacturing company, is spearheading this campaign.”

‘Dead’ woman found alive in mortuary fridge A South African woman is recovering in hospital after being discovered alive in a mortuary fridge. The woman was taken to Carletonville morgue, in Gauteng province, having been declared dead by paramedics following a road accident. Ambulance company Distress Alert said she had shown “no form of life”, South Africa’s TimesLive website reports. But when a morgue worker returned to check on the body in the fridge, he found the woman was breathing. An official has confirmed to the BBC the woman is now being treated in

hospital after being referred by forensics officers. She has not been named. An investigation into the incident is being carried out, but Distress Alert operations manager Gerrit Bradnick said there was “no proof of any negligence” on his company’s behalf. “This did not happen because our paramedics are not properly trained,” he told TimesLive. Mr Bradnick told TimesSelect she was one of several people involved in a car accident which left two others dead on Sunday, 24 June. This is not the first time this year someone has woken up in a mortuary

after being declared dead. In January an inmate at a jail in Spain’s Asturias region regained consciousness hours before an autopsy was due to be performed. Three doctors had certified him dead. It is also not the first time this has happened in South Africa. Seven years ago, a 50-year-old man woke up screaming in an Eastern Cape morgue. In 2016 another road accident victim, from KwaZulu Natal, was declared dead, only to be found breathing the next day. He died five hours after the discovery. Source: BBC

Lions eat poachers who broke into Wildlife Reserve A group of rhino poachers were eaten by a pride of lions in Kenton-on-the-Sea, according to the owner of the South African wildlife reserve where the incident happened. The remains of what appears to be three bodies were discovered on the Simbuya Game Reserve along with high power rifles owner Nick Fox said in a statement. Fox said the poachers’ mangled remains are suspected to have been eaten by a pride of six lions who were on the reservation to protect the endangered and highly targeted rhinos who are hunted for their horns. The poachers entered the reserve with a slew of weapons — including a high-powered rifle with a silencer, an axe, wire cutters and food supplies for a number of days — on the night of July 1 or the early hours of July 2. Fox, who said the reserve has had previous run ins with poachers, said that the supplies found are all the hallmarks of “a gang intent on killing rhino and removing their horns.” The wildlife reserve’s owners became aware that something was wrong when anti-poaching dogs alerted a handler, who then heard a loud commotion coming from the lions. Fox said a field guide alerted the Anti-Poaching Unit that there appeared to be human remains and poaching weapons near the lions earlier this week. He then alerted local authorities and the Association of Eastern Cape Game Reserves. As of Thursday, it is not clear exactly how many poachers were killed, according to Fox, but local police are still investigating. Source: TIME

Dozens of “drunken” seagulls have become “disoriented and confused” after scavenging alcohol in southwest England. Some have died and others are seriously ill, with the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) saying the birds were probably feeding on waste products from a local brewery or alcohol producer. “The birds appear disoriented and confused and struggle to stand,” said RSPCA vet David Couper. “We took some video of one of the birds who is staggering around and losing his balance just like a person would if they’d had too much to drink.” Mr Couper, who has treated the birds at an RSPCA centre in Taunton in Somerset, added: “Sadly, a few of the birds have died but most of them have made good recoveries and have been released after a few days in our care.” He said the birds had been brought in in recent weeks after being found on beaches across Devon, and a few from Bridport and Lyme Regis in Dorset. One rescue centre has taken in nearly 30 intoxicated seagulls in a fortnight. “We think they’re gaining access to some brewing waste products somewhere,” RSPCA officer Jo Daniel said. “At first, the birds look like they have botulism (an illness caused by bacteria) but then, after vomiting, most seem to recover. “The birds absolutely stink of alcohol when we collect them so now our vans smell like pubs!” The animal welfare charity has had more than a dozen similar reports from the south coast. It is now urging local breweries, distilleries and alcohol producers to check that their waste is secure and cannot be accessed by wildlife or birds. “These birds were clearly wearing their beer gog-gulls when they scavenged their meal for the day and they’ve really been suffering with hangovers after a gulls’ night out,” animal collection officer Clara Scully said. Brewery waste can also be used as a compost and feed, so narrowing down where the seagulls are guzzling the alcohol from is difficult. Anyone with concerns for the welfare of a bird or animal can contact the RSPCA’s 24hour helpline on 0300 1234 999 for advice or assistance. Source: TIMES NEWS

Foreign Affairs Pope in special mass for migrants, decries refusal to help them Pope Francis on Friday celebrated a special Mass for migrants and refugees in which he denounced the “sterile hypocricy” of people who refuse to help them. Francis led a service in St Peter’s Basilica attended by over 200 people, including people rescued at sea and representatives of migrant charities. “The Lord condemns the sterile hypocrisy of those who do not want to get their hands dirty and turn away those who have the right, just as we do, to security and dignified living conditions. “This hypocrisy builds walls, real or virtual, rather than bridges, while before the challenges of contemporary movements of migration, the only reasonable response is one of solidarity and mercy,’’ he

said. Turning to migrants, Francis urged them to be “witnesses of hope in a world increasingly concerned about the present, with little vision for the future and averse to sharing.” He also told them to continue on the path of integration while “respecting the culture and the laws of the country that is welcoming you.” Earlier this week, the Vatican said the special Mass was to mark the fifth anniversary of Francis’ visit to Lampedusa, the Italian migrant-hosting island where he made his first official trip as pope. The pope is the son of Italian emigrants to Argentina, and has often spoken up for the rights of migrants, urging governments to be more open to them. (dpa/ NAN)

Reactions trial ‘Trump baby’ balloon plan Plans to fly a giant inflatable depicting Donald Trump as a baby over London during the US president’s visit have sparked an online row. London Mayor Sadiq Khan has given permission for the heliumfilled six-metre (19.7ft) high balloon to fly. Some people on social media have welcomed the blimp protest, while others have described it as “juvenile” and “disrespectful”. Mr Trump is due to meet Theresa May at 10 Downing Street on 13 July. Campaigners raised almost £18,000 to pay for the inflatable, which they said reflects Mr Trump’s character as an “angry baby with a fragile ego and tiny hands”. Republicans Overseas spokesman Drew Liquerman said the blimp was “cringeworthy”, but he doesn’t believe the US president will care about it. “Frankly it’s embarrassing. It’s

embarrassing for the people flying it, for the British residents of London and for people in the UK,” he added. “I don’t think it will bother him.” Social media has been split between those who view the blimp as a suitable protest against the president... Under the plans the inflatable will be allowed to fly for two hours on the morning of Friday 13 July, using Parliament Square Garden as a grounding point. A statement on behalf of Mr Khan said he “supports the right to peaceful protest and understands that this can take many different forms”. More than 10,000 people signed a petition calling for the inflatable to be given permission to fly, activists said. Leo Murray, who is behind the crowdfunded idea, said: “[Mr Trump] really seems to hate it when people make fun of him.

“We want to make sure he knows that all of Britain is looking down on him and laughing at him.” Mr Khan and Mr Trump have repeatedly clashed on Twitter, including in the aftermath of the London Bridge attack. A counter-protest which aims to fund a “Sadiq Khan baby balloon” has received more than £10,000 of support. Before the inflatable can take off, campaigners also need permission from the National Air Traffic Service and Met Police. BBC Max Wakefield, who is one of the people working on the project, said the group is “confident it will obtain all necessary permits”. Mozambique airline sacks board after PM was left stranded The board of Mozambique’s Lam Airlines has been sacked after the country’s prime minister and other passengers were left stranded when a plane ran out of fuel. Carlos Agostinho do Rosário ended up using an air force plane for his official trip from the capital, Maputo, to the northern Niassa province. The state-owned airline has been experiencing a cash crunch. Local media report the “chaos” has been going on for three days. Reports say that fuel suppliers had asked for payment to be made before delivery. The airline called the incident “embarrassing” but said it was working to ensure flights resumed on Friday after the government’s intervention, the BBC’s Jose Tembe in Maputo reports. It apologised to its customers and urged travellers to telephone to get information about their flights. A six-year ban on the airline operating in the European Union was lifted last year. It had been imposed because of what the EU said was a lack of oversight by aviation authorities. Mozambique has been facing a financial crisis since 2015 and has been largely cut off from multilateral and foreign donors after the government admitted to $1.4bn (£1bn) of undisclosed borrowing in 2016.

Tunis gets first female mayor A woman from Tunisia’s moderate Islamic party has been elected as mayor of the capital city, Tunis, the first time a woman holds the post, AP reported. The North African country leads the Arab world in regard to women’s rights after gaining independence from France in 1956. Souad Abderrahim, a 54-yearold pharmacist of the Ennahdha party, won the post in the second round of voting by the municipal council after defeating her top rival, Kamel Idir, of the party Nida Tounes, founded by the Tunisian president. Despite being a member of an Islamic party, Abderrahim, a former lawmaker has a history of fighting for women’s rights and doesn’t wear a veil. She was the lone winner for the post despite six other women from the Ennahdha party who also competed for mayoral posts in the region around Tunis. The party announced in 2016 that it was separating politics from religion. Abderrahim’s plans include cleaning up the capital and planting trees.

Floyd Mayweather sued by Nigerian firm over no show

Following the highly publicised visit of Floyd Money Mayweather to Nigeria and other parts of African countries which was reported before it was cancelled, a Nigerian company has alleged it was screwed out of a fortune by the wealthy American and is now suing to get its money back. A report from TMZ making rounds says the company behind the lawsuit is Zinni Media, which claims it booked Floyd to make five appearances in Nigeria and Ghana in June 2017 … for the low sum of $375,000!!!! According to the report, the company says it got Floyd to make a video confirming the appearances — so, they thought they were good to go! They even wired him $210,000 in advance.

But, days before the first event, Floyd bailed — and the company was left holding the bag. In the suit, Zinni claims Floyd’s reps offered to reschedule for Dec 2017 — and added more appearances to the list — but, he also raised the price to $550,000. Zinni claims they were told they could use the $210k toward the new booking price. Zinni says they accepted the new deal — but, when they asked Floyd to make a new video confirming the new dates, he bailed again … and never returned the original $210,000. Now, Zinni is taking legal action in federal court in California — claiming Floyd damaged their reputation and defrauded them. Zinni wants at least $2million to make things right.

NPFL: Sunshine Stars set for fight to the finish against relegation – Dayo Ojo Sunshine Stars midfielder, Dayo Ojo, says the players of the Akure side will give their all to ensure the club maintain its top flight status at the end of the season. The Owena Waves have struggled to make impact in the Nigeria Professional Football League this season and currently occupy 18th position in the table. Former handler of the team, Duke Udi, left his post earlier in the campaign following discord between him and the club’s management. His replacement, Henry Abiodun, has made minimal impact as the team has struggled to pick positive results in the league. “It’s a difficult situation for us, but we will fight hard till the end to remedy the situation,” Ojo said. “We have to improve on our performance in away matches in particular if we want to beat the drop and avoid mistakes at home too. “I think we have been unlucky in some away matches but it is important to keep fighting until the end of the season.” Sunshine Stars will host Abia Warriors at the Akure Stadium in their next league fixture on July 18 when the NPFL resume from the World Cup break.

Serena’s chances boosted as Wimbledon seeds keep falling Serena Williams’s chances of winning an eighth Wimbledon and 24th Grand Slam title were boosted Friday when Madison Keys became the seventh top 10 seed to be eliminated. Tenth seed Keys, who had made at least the quarter-finals of her last three majors, lost in the third round 7-5, 5-7, 6-4 to Russian qualifier Evgeniya Rodina, ranked 120th in the world. She joins defending champion Garbine Muguruza, world number two Caroline Wozniacki, two-time champion Petra Kvitova and US Open winner Sloane Stephens in falling in the first week. Serena, seeded 25 this year after taking time away from the tour to give birth to her daughter, faces Kristina Mladenovic of France for a place in the last 16 later Friday. The 36-year-old American now cannot meet a top 32 player until the semi-finals after the scattering of the seeds this week. Keys lost nine games on the trot from 5-2 up in the first set to 0-4 down in the second. She rallied to level the thirdround match before Rodina sealed a maiden place in the last 16 of a major. Keys fired 15 aces in the match but also committed 48 unforced errors. “I have played the qualies and three matches this week which were all three sets,” said 29-yearold Rodina, one of six mothers

in the draw at the start of the tournament. “She hits the ball so hard. I am a little surprised that I won, I was a little bit lucky today.” Later Friday, eight-time champion Roger Federer takes on German comeback specialist JanLennard Struff. The world number 64 has had to fight back from two sets to love down in his first two matches to beat Leonardo Mayer and 39-yearold Ivo Karlovic. Defending champion and top seed Federer, by contrast, has made the third round without breaking sweat. The 36-year-old Swiss has won 26 consecutive sets at the All England Club. Federer beat Struff in the second round of the Australian Open in January in straight sets. – Zverev, Anderson through – German fourth seed Alexander Zverev made the third round, seeing off Taylor Fritz of the United States 6-4, 5-7, 6-7 (0/7), 6-1, 6-2 and faces Latvian qualifier Ernests Gulbis for a spot in the last 16. Zverev had trailed two sets to one when his tie with Fritz was halted due to darkness on Thursday. But the 21-year-old raced away with the last two sets in Friday’s bright sunshine. “Stopping last night was not a nice feeling to go to bed with,” said Zverev.

“But I knew if I took my chances today, I could do well.” “I am having a good season — made the quarters at the French Open — it’s all coming together.” Russia’s Ekaterina Makarova defied second round victim Wozniacki’s churlish prediction that she wouldn’t progress further in the tournament by reaching the last 16. Makarova, who made the quarter-finals four years ago, beat a weary-looking Lucie Safarova of the Czech Republic 4-6, 6-1, 6-4. She next faces Italy’s Camila Giorgi who saved a match point to beat Katerina Siniakova of the Czech Republic 3-6, 7-6 (8/6), 6-2. Giorgi last made the fourth round six years ago. Five-time champion Venus Williams, 38, and making her 21st Wimbledon appearance, faces fellow big server Kiki Bertens of the Netherlands. Williams has dropped the opening set in both her matches so far and needed to save match points to beat Bertens in Miami this year. South Africa’s Kevin Anderson, seeded eight, swept past Germany’s Philipp Kohlschreiber 6-3, 7-5, 7-5 on the back of 22 aces and 42 winners. Anderson has reached the last 16 for the fourth time and goes on to face either Sam Querrey of the United States or France’s Gael Monfils.

club, but also I think it’s time to move to greater things.” The 19 year-old midfielder has been sent out on loan to Dutch second tier team, MVV Maastricht and VVV Venlo in the topflight division from Arsenal. The former Golden Eaglets and Flying Eagles captain is under contract with the English Premier League club, Arsenal until June 2021. Nwakali made his debut for Super Eagles B team in an international friendly against Atletico Madrid in May which the Nigerian side lost 3-2.

Nigerian ambassador leads Larry Ekundayo into ring for title fight in UK The Nigerian High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Amb. George Oguntade, has reportedly agreed to lead Nigerian born England-based boxer, Larry ‘The Natural’ Ekundayo, into the ring for his world Welterweight title fight on July 13 in London. Ekundayo, who is due to return to the ring against Scotland’s John Thain, was said to be thrilled by the development. A member of ‘Team Ekundayo’ and boxing enthusiast, Khomeini Bukhari, said in a statement on Friday that a VVIP ticket to the fight has been presented to Oguntade at the Nigerian High Commission in London. Bukhari thanked other Nigerians who have supported Ekundayo’s boxing career, including a former Lagos State Governor, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, who he said had made a huge financial commitment to Larry’s career. Bukhari who is also the Director, Peel Aston Global, disclosed plans to present a symbolic boxing glove to the politician as a mark of appreciation for his support to the ambitious boxer. He said, “During the fight in London, I will also be joining the Nigerian High Commissioner to lead Ekundayo into the ring

during which I would be holding the ‘Asiwaju flag’ as a show of appreciation to the philanthropist.” Ekundayo’s commercial agent, Ben Gray, said that the boxer has very bright chances of becoming a world champion in a couple of months. He, however, admonished the government and well-placed individuals to support the boxer’s dream, noting that many talented Nigerian boxers were not getting the support they needed to grow and succeed.
