According to the chairman, FIRS’ generation of N5.3 trillion is significant as it was at a period when oil prices averaged $70 per barrel. Oil price was at an average of $100 to $120 per barrel between 2010 and 2013, Fowler noted. Oil component of the N5.320 trillion is N2.467 trillion (46.38 per cent), while the non-oil component of the collection is N2.852 trillion (53.62 per cent). From audit alone, the FIRS collected N212, 792 billion from 2278 cases with a huge reduction in audit circle. “While we have been steadily increasing revenue collection over the years, our cost of collection has actually been going down. In 2016 we collected N3, 307 trillion, in 2017 we collected N4, 027 trillion and in 2018 we collected N5, 320 trillion. Meanwhile, the cost of collection as a percentage of actual taxes collected has been reducing; in 2016 it was 2.6%, in 2017 it was 2.49% while in 2018 it was 2.14%.” “The Service has been making tremendous efforts in also increasing the amount of non-oil revenue it collects. Non-oil collection has contributed 64.99% in 2016, in 2017 it contributed 62.25% and in 2018 it contributed 53.62%. This represents the government’s focus on increasing nonoil sources of revenue and the diversification of the
Nigerian economy,” Fowler said. He reiterated the fact that only companies that made a profit are obliged to pay taxes. According to him, if a company is situated in Nigeria it is only fair that it pays its fair share of tax for the benefit of all Nigerians. The Executive Chairman also stated that various initiatives were implemented by FIRS to enhance tax administration and make taxation as easy as possible. “FIRS deployed ICT initiatives that enable a taxpayer to pay taxes from anywhere in the world, at any time. With the e-payment channel one can pay taxes with the click of a button and one can also download their receipts. Other e-Services are the e-Registration, e-Filing, -Stamp Duty and e-Tax Clearance Certificate. “Taxpayers can now also choose the tax office where they would like to conduct their tax transactions. Before now, if one was registered with a particular tax office, one had to conduct all of their tax transactions in that office. However, to make it more convenient for the taxpayer, they can now choose which ever office they wish to conduct their transactions with”. He noted that Nigerian taxpayers are embracing the modern way of tax collection, introduced by the FIRS through the 6-e Solutions. Said Fowler: “We are automating the collection of Value Added Tax, VAT, in key
sectors which will facilitate reduction in compliance cost in the long term. We are doing System to system integration between banks and FIRS. And I am happy to announce to you that we had a 31% increase year on year in VAT collection in the banks that have gone live between January 2017December 2018 and collected N25 billion so far. “Amongst others, there is also the Government Information Financial Management Information System (GIFMIS), which links FIRS to the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation OAGF for real-time exchange of information and data. We are also automating the payment of VAT by states through the State Offices of Accountant General Platform (SAG). This will ensure that we automate and deduct at source and remittance of VAT and WHT from State governments contract payments directly to FIRS’s account and so far, collected N13 billion”. He noted that taxpayers requested for and processed their Tax Clearance Certificate, TCC, through tcc. firs.gov.ng, from the comfort of their homes. “Tax clearance on the platform grew from 9,574 – 59,350 within a year of introducing the platform. “Auto VAT collection in key sectors has also facilitated in reducing the cost of compliance. A Federal High Court sitting in Port Harcourt on Monday restrained the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from recognising any candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the 2019 general elections in Rivers State. The court, presided over by Justice Kolawole Omotosho, also nullified all nominations of the APC in Rivers State for the forthcoming elections in 2019. The court ruled specifically that the APC could not participate in the governorship, Senate, House of Representatives, and House of Assembly elections
during the 2019 polls in Rivers State. Justice Omotosho, in his judgment in the suit filed by Senator Magnus Abe and others versus Rivers APC and others, declared that the APC for failing to respect the law, must bear the consequences of her disobedience of the law. The High Court judge stated that the direct and indirect primaries of the Rivers State APC were illegal, null, and void. The court further declared that both the direct and indirect primaries were held during the pendency of the suit at the Rivers State High Court. According to the court, the APC conducted the indirect primaries in gross disrespect
of the pending suit before Justice Chinwendu Nwogu of the Rivers State High Court. He noted that the judgment of Justice Chinwendu Nwogu nullifying the primaries of the APC in Rivers State was yet to be set aside by an appellate court, hence it remained valid. The court, therefore, held that the names sent by the Rt. Hon. Rotimi Amaechi faction and the National Working Committee of the APC to INEC for the 2019 General elections were illegal and should be disregarded. Following crisis that recently rocked ownership of 9mobile, formerly Etisalat Nigeria, emerging news from the network operator is that Adrian Wood, the erstwhile CEO of MTN Nigeria, has started fighting the team that took over the helm of affairs in an acting capacity while the new owners embarked on developing the long-term strategy of the company. The third largest mobile network operator in Nigeria was recently acquired by Teleology Nigeria Limited, after $251.1 million was paid recently to complete the total sum of $301 million to perfect the full takeover of Etisalat Nigeria. An insider source informed The Daily Times that Adrian Wood and a few of his colleagues who formed Teleology in Europe to acquire telecom assets are being boxed into a corner by the majority owners of Teleology Nigeria for failing to meet up to their part of the deal. The source revealed that Adrian Wood’s issues border on loyalty by him building a camp within a camp; integrity and the ghost from his past haunting him arising from circumstances surrounding his departure from MTN. But in just over a month from taking over 9mobile, the team has increased subscriber base by over one million subscribers; cut costs; improved network efficiency to compete effectively with competitors in the Nigerian market, and embarked on aggressive product development while saving hundreds of Nigerian jobs. All these have attracted the attention and admiration of telecom industry watchers but has been met with jealousy and envy by Mr. Wood.
The Daily Times gathered that while Mr. Wood did not put any funds towards the project, he wanted to coerce the board to giving management contract and all executive authority to his European group, leaving them at liberty to fire the Nigerian employees. “The man is stuck in the 1990s and seems to be taking the huge experience and expertise of Nigerians in the telecoms sector for granted”, stated another insider. It would be recalled that immediately before the Australian telecom guru was axed by MTN, rumours emerged of his illicit affairs with two female staff who were embroiled in a clash over contracts irregularly awarded to them by Adrian Wood, the then CEO of the company. While this matter was handled in a hushed manner leading to his wellorchestrated exit from MTN owing to the fact that one of the staff members was a married woman, it appears that blemish has stayed to haunt the man over ten years down the line. “He is undoubtedly one of the finest commercial and technical minds in telecoms. His shortcomings largely arise from his inability to honour his word and this other weakness that has been known to bring down men of power. A detailed report on the matter will hit the headlines if the infighting continues”, said the source. Meanwhile, the new owner of 9mobile after the takeover had stated that: “Teleology is pleased to announce the constitution of a new Board of Directors for Nigeria’s multi-awardwinning telecommunication company, 9mobile, following the successful completion of the tenure of the former Board appointed by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and in fulfillment of the consequential transfer of final ownership to the new investors, Teleology Nigeria Limited.”

Justice Omotosho condemned the invasion of the Rivers State High Court during the hearing of the suit, saying that actions must be taken to check the excesses of persons interested in destroying the rule of law. Meanwhile, the major opposition party in Rivers State, the All Progressives Congress, APC, has expressed mixed reactions following the judgement of the Port Harcourt Federal High Court which nullified both the direct and the indirect primaries for the 2019 general elections of the two factions in the state. Rivers APC said: “We strongly feel that the Trial Court missed the mark in some of its decisions. “In the case of Senator Magnus Abe and 48 others, firstly, we totally agree with the Court that Senator Magnus Abe and the 48 other members of the Party who claimed to have emerged through an alleged direct primary election, were not and therefore could not be declared candidates of the APC in the 2019 General Election in Rivers State. “This was because the National Body of the APC never authorized or conducted the alleged direct primary as required by its constitution and guidelines neither did INEC monitor same. “However, we do not agree with the court that the Davies Ibiamu Ikanya and Peter Odike led Executive Committee of the party in Rivers State was still subsisting. The APC has the powers to dissolve its Executive Committee and that power was exercised on 21st of May, 2018. The APC having dissolved that Exco, it ceased to exist and could not be resurrected, even if the Court finds, albeit wrongly, that there was no valid congress to replace the dissolved EXCO. “We know, as it is the law in Nigeria today, that APC as a Political Party has the absolute powers to schedule, reschedule or even cancel any of its congresses. The Party effectively terminated the ward, LGA and State Congresses of 5th, 12th and 19th May 2018 respectively. The APC Primary Election based on the unchallenged results and outcome of subsequent APC Congresses were lawful and valid,” the statement continued.
On the PDP versus APC case, the party recalled that the PDP brought a suit seeking the court to declare that the candidates of the APC were not validly nominated, stating that the trial court agreed with that position and made order in that regard, adding that the party totally disagreed with its reasoning. The statement continued: “As the laws remain today, the issue of nomination of candidates of a political party remains the exclusive right and preserve of that political party, and any dispute arising thereto also remains within that political party and its aggrieved members. “Under the Electoral Act 2010, a third party (PDP) can only challenge the nomination of the APC candidates as prescribed in Section 31(5) & (6), or challenge the return of APC candidates in accordance with Section 138(1) of the Electoral Act. Nothing more imaginary can fit into the contemplation of the Nigerian Electoral laws. “The PDP’s case did not satisfy any of these conditions or circumstances. It is on this note that we strongly believe that APC will get victory in the superior court,” according to the statement. The party said that it had, accordingly, instructed our lawyers to review the case and file the appeals immediately, in order not to temper or jeopardise with the already existing legal rights of the candidates before INEC. The Rivers APC, therefore, called on all members of the party in Rivers State to remain calm, focused, undaunted, and go about their electioneering business with equanimity. “We believe that at the end victory will be served,” the party concluded in the statement.
The Peoples Democratic Party Presidential Campaign Organisation (PPCO) said that President Muhammadu Buhari has handed his re-election campaign over to a set of politicians that have looted the nation’s treasury. The PPCO challenged the President to display his highlytouted integrity by handing over the list of his campaign council members to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for investigation. The PDP absolved members of its Presidential Campaign Council from corruption charges while insisting that the Buhari Presidential Campaign Council list is a catalog of ‘who is who’ in corruption. This was contained in a statement issued on Monday by PPCO’s Director of Media and Publicity, Kola Ologbondiyan. The PPCO noted that the fact that President Buhari selected, inaugurated and sits as the Chairman of the council, with persons with corruption cases, shows that he approves and perhaps have hugely benefited from the corrupt practices for which they were indicted. “There are already allegations that such individuals are being spared because part of their loots have been diverted to fund President Buhari’s re-election bid. “This development justifies the opinion held by most Nigerians that President Buhari is not fighting corruption and that his much-hyped anti-corruption crusade is just an oppressive scheme against the opposition”, he said. The PDP campaign council further alleged that President Buhari himself has huge corruption allegations hanging directly on his neck, particularly the over N11 trillion stolen from the Petroleum sector as well as the 9mobile and Keystone bank saga, the APC factional National Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole, is also facing corruption allegations. The party urged the EFCC to get a copy of the list and commence investigation, particularly as some of the individuals who currently enjoy one immunity or the other under President Buhari’s cover will lose such immunity, come May 29, 2019.

Mathew Dadiya, Abuja President Muhammadu Buhari has assured that despite the commencement of political campaign for his second term bid, he would continue to do his part without making governance or his work suffer. The president said that his co-chairman, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who is the national leader of the party, will be fully in-charge and “is going to be on 24-hour vigil.” Buhari said this on Monday during the inauguration of the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential campaign council at the International Conference Centre, Abuja. He said, “Even though we have only 40 days, this campaign is going to tax us all, because we intend to touch all corners of our great and vast country.” However, the president said that the Director-General of the Presidential Campaign Council, Rotimi Amaechi, will have overall responsibility for all aspects of the campaign, including field operations; while the Secretary will be responsible for all administrative and treasury-related activities of the council. He admonished the leadership and members of his party to resist being provoked, remain focused and civil in their campaigns. “Let us engage our citizens on issues and ask for reflection on the comparative difference between 2015 and 2019 on security, economy and corruption and abuse by those entrusted with leadership in Nigeria. “As we embark on the campaign to secure mandate for the next level, I want to acknowledge the sacrifices and contributions of all stakeholders who have endeavored to keep our party united, and our governance successful. “I urge members of this formidable team to always keep their eyes on the ball, which is the success of our party at the polls. “I wish to appeal to all members to be guided by the enduring vision behind the formation and sustenance of our party, which is anchored, on sacrifice and imperative to salvage and stabilize our great and promising nation,” the president added. President Buhari further appealed to all party members, and especially those who are in the campaign council, to unite and cooperate and ensure a smooth operation. According to him, a victory for APC is a victory for all wellmeaning Nigerians, who are committed to ‘change’ from an inglorious past; where those in positions of public trust willfully took for themselves what belongs to us all; where the security of our citizens was second place to their acquisition of unwholesome wealth; where our economic growth was sacrificed for the fleeting ease of import dependency. The president further noted that his government has in the last 3 years and 6 months reversed the downward slide that the PDP took the nation in its 16 years of misrule. “We have restored the territorial integrity of our nation, thanks to our gallant men and women of our armed forces. We are systematically engaged in all the remaining corridors of insurgency, kidnappings, robberies, herdsmen and farmers clashes. “We have reset our national values: corruption is no longer condoned and is no longer seen as normal for public office holders. The agencies of government are no longer equivocal in dealing with anyone who flouts our laws.” President Buhari said that under the APC-led government, the high and low are receiving jail terms, loots are being recovered, and Nigerians are increasingly displaying the “timeless values of honesty, honour and decency.” He, therefore, congratulated every Nigerian for making these changes possible. “Our economy has become a prudently managed enterprise. Our resources are now working for us, as we ensure the delivery of key national infrastructure, which were left unattended over these past 15 years. The direct impact of our policies on improvements in roads railways, and power supply are evident. There is greater evidence of economic diversification seen in growing local production of agricultural produce and solid minerals. “Our government has succeeded in the last four years in halting national drift, removing the shadow of insecurity and fear dominating our life and reviving our economy from decline to stability and growth. The macroeconomic health of our economy, indicated by several measurable factors such as a stable exchange rate, lower inflation, growing foreign reserves, has been applauded by independent local and international rating agencies. “In addition, the quality
of elections since 2015 has continued to improve with declining levels of problems that have defined elections in the past. Free, fair and credible elections are the foundation of political stability and peace in any nation. We have insisted that votes must count and have maintained a policy of noninterference in elections,” the president said. According to him, INEC has so far since 2015, conducted fair and credible elections in 195 constituencies nationwide, which have been attested nationwide to be qualitatively better than previous elections. Buhari further reiterated his commitment to free and fair elections, saying “If there is one legacy I want to leave, it is the enthronement of democracy as a system of government.” He added that for democracy to be enthroned, elections must be free and fair in which citizens have a right to vote for candidates of their choice without intimidation in any form. “I have warned INEC and security agencies to that effect,” the president disclosed. Buhari restated that he will keep insisting that votes must count, assuring that their campaigns will be anchored on their performance in the last four years. “There is no doubt that our party has succeeded in taking Nigeria to a new level of enduring peace, economic growth political stability, justice and progress. This is the new level we are promising Nigerians, the details of which we will take to Nigerians as we embark on our campaigns,” the president stated. Earlier, the Director General of the Campaign, Rotimi Amaechi, said that there is no longer stealing since the ruling party came on board but stressed that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will not have peace until they returned all the stolen funds in their 16 years misrule. He said: “We are no longer stealing money. PDP stole the money meant to feed Nigerians and until they return it, they will not have peace. “PDP has nothing to say to Nigerians. Our campaign is going to be issues based. We are determined to save Nigerians. “The President said he will fight corruption that is what he is doing. The promised to create employment, improve the economy. We met a tattered economy that if we did nothing Nigeria will be at a mess but today the economy has been growing. “In fixing the economy, we promised infrastructural development. When I took over as minister of transportation, GE approached me and said

Where money is given for prayers in Nigeria, I can pray in my church nobody is giving me money to go and pray. “So as a team we must pass this message of the things we have done in government and the result is there for all to see, that is why I personally supervise the rail project in my ministry because we want to take a ride before the elections. “So we must pass that message that we are not only talking about corruption but we are talking about what we have done that is different from PDP. Justice Olukayode Adeniyi of High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, sitting in Apo, on Monday, upheld the election of Senator John Enoh as the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for 2 March governorship election in Cross Rivers State. Mr. Uguru Usani, Minister of Niger Delta Development, who was defeated by Enoh in the governorship primary, had headed to court to seek redress on the grounds that he was manipulated out of the process. He instituted the suit against the APC, INEC and Enoh. Specifically, the plaintiff challenged the outcome of the exercise, and urged the court to declare him the authentic gubernatorial candidate of the APC in Cross River State. Usani had averred before the court that the APC party primary was conducted solely by the state executives contrary to the provisions of Paragraph 14 and 20 of the APC Guidelines. declaring him as the validly elected governorship candidate of the APC in Cross Rivers State. He also prayed amongst other reliefs for a declaration that forwarding Enoh’s name by APC to INEC as its candidate in Cross River was illegal, unconstitutional, null and void. However, delivering judgment on the pre-election suit, Justice Olukayode Adeniyi, held that the plaintiff had failed to adduce substantial evidence to prove his case. The judge said he was minded to dismiss the suit of the plaintiff because the court was satisfied with evidence that showed that APC conducted governorship primaries in collaboration with the state executives of the party. The court also admitted in evidence a proof that officials of the INEC were on ground to monitor the exercise. According to Justice Adeniyi, documentary evidence before the court showed that the APC governorship primary was conducted on September 30, 2018. The court, therefore, said the suit should not have been filed as the party had satisfied all requirements as enshrined in the 1999 Constitution and the Electoral Act in the conduct of the exercise. “In the final analysis, the judgment of this court is that the case lacks merit and the court lacks the jurisdiction to undo what has been done rightly. “The suit is hereby dismissed,’’ the court declared.

The programme resulted in payment of over N68 billion out of about N96.2 billion liability established by the exercise. “The Voluntary Assets and Income Declaration Scheme (VAIDS) was initiated by the Federal Ministry of Finance and the FIRS received over 5122 applications under the Scheme. The Scheme resulted
in voluntary declarations of over N92 billion, with over N54 billion paid so far by companies,” he added. Fowler further explained how FIRS ascertained whether those companies with banking turnover of N1 billion are tax compliant or not. He said: “FIRS wrote to all commercial banks in May 2018, requesting for a list of companies, partnerships and enterprises with a banking turnover of N1 billion and above. This activity was aimed at ascertaining those companies that are compliant with the tax laws and those that are not compliant. So far, non-compliant organisations have paid about N21.75 billion. “Companies that had a Tax Identification Number (TIN) and were paying were 45261, those that had a TIN but were not paying were 40611 and those without a TIN and who were not paying were 34504.”

Andrew Orolua, Abuja Acting Chairman, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Magu has charged journalists to devote more time to investigative journalism as it forms a crucial aspect of the fight against corruption. He gave the charge on Monday in Abuja at the opening ceremony of 3-day Training on Investigative Journalism for Anti Corruption and Accountability Campaign in Local Languages, organised by Wadata Communications Nigeria Limited with support from the MacArthur Foundation. “The media plays a hugely invaluable role in exposing corrupt practices in the society, and investigative journalism serves as the conscience of any nation,” he said. Magu, who was represented by Tony Orilade, EFCC’s Acting Spokesperson, called on the participants, to do away with “armchair journalism” and channel their energies to “exposing corruption on the society”. He said: “An investigative journalist is the one that stands out among other journalists; one who does not engage in armchair journalism – cut and paste journalism, or brown envelope journalism, but instead, engages in deep, extensive, in-depth and serious research into issues of corruption.”

With 39 days to the 2019 general elections, the sincerity of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct widely acceptable and credible elections was yesterday questioned by the Inter- Party Advisory Council (IPAC). The umbrella body of registered political parties in Nigeria picked holes in the 2019 Election Guidelines and Regulations presented by INEC chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu accusing the Commission of importing into the document items that do not reflect agreement reached between IPAC and INEC. The Publicity Secretary of IPAC, Barrister Imo Ikenga Ugochinyere raised this alarm while addressing the media at the National Electoral Institute venue of Regular Quarterly Consultative meeting of INEC
with political parties and presentation of voters registers for the elections. The INEC chairman, Prof Yakubu in his address after presenting the electronic version of the voters register to representatives of the 91 registered political parties said the 2019 Guideline have been sent electronically to the parties. The parties accused INEC of doctoring the guideline for 2019 election on accreditation procedures, demanded list of Collected PVC before election as well as calling for the sack of Idris Ibrahim as Inspector General of Police. IPAC accused the leadership of INEC led by Prof. Mahmood Yakubu and of producing the Guideline without the consultation and notification of the chairmen of political parties, alleging that obnoxious clauses and strange inclusion

The Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Atiku Abubakar has condemned the military invasion of the offices of Media Trust Limited, Publishers of Daily Trust as well as the arrest of their Regional Editor, Uthman Abubakar and a reporter, Ibrahim Sawab. The former vice President in a statement by his media adviser, Paul Ibe, called on President Muhammadu Buhari to immediately caution the security forces and end their attack on the media and the freedom of the press. ANCOPS Northwest wins national essay competition Haruna Aliyu Usman, Birnin Kebbi The national essay competition organised and held in Kebbi state by the Confederation of All Principals of Nigeria has been won by the student of Nagari Science College, Birnin Kebbi, Ibrahim Yalli Kamba. The contest was fully participated by all the qualified students short listed by the organisers after through screening and moderation by the judges. 2019 polls, intellectuals and matters arising

The 2019 presidential election is turning out to be unlike any other before it. A few weeks to the poll, there is some feeling of fait accompli in the air. There is this queer quiet in the camp of the ‘the main opposition party’, as a section of the Nigerian media has labelled it, but for punctuations of disjointed, ridiculous press statements issued more to amuse than raise any issue of serious concern. When you obsess with power and moneybags as the formula for success, insisting on building from the roof rather than the bottom, strange things happen. Who knows, it just might be a part of the ‘Dubai strategy’ to confuse the opponent with a lacklustre start to the campaign, only to launch out with force towards the end of the game. Whatever it is they are articulating, we can only wish them well. As for the ‘Third Force’, the different variants of which we’ve seen, it has turned out to be exactly what we called it – mere smoke, founded on nothing but paltry wishes. Some of the most vociferous voices of the version cooked in Abeokuta have predictably moved into more prosperous alliances. The spokesperson of the third force yesterday now speaks for the old force today. It is that easy. The idealists are all over the place, as we predicted. With the proponents unable to die to self, it was inevitable that the PACT would fall apart. The umpire for the day is now the presidential candidate of a party, which makes the pretence at presiding over the process of forging a common front even more laughable. In 2016, I argued that “… the problem with Nigeria is not an insufficiency of political platforms or parties through which one can ventilate one’s political philosophy or actualise the ambition for power; our problem, in fact, is the ease with which we take to charting our own course, seeking to singularly take on a new path rather than joining hands to build one house and not dissipating energy in different directions.” Looking at what has become of the effort of the ‘progressives’ outside the dominant parties to make impact, again, I have been proved right. The inability to coalesce, to die to self and forge a consensus has made nonsense of the desire, genuine on the part of some, to cause a paradigm shift. Sadly, each one has taken it as if it is as simple as about going it alone, not realising that only weakens the collective and the overall objective. Easily, we lose sight of the value that can only come from working together as one. Àgbájọ ọwọ́ la fí nsọ̀yà, ọwọ́ kan kò gbẹ́rù d’órí. For the overriding knowledge about every subject, governance and politics inclusive, that a section of Nigeria’s intellectuals likes to arrogate to itself, looking down on every other group in the process, is it not ironic to see how often it runs short of achieving anything tangible, as a collective? In spite of the huffing and puffing that we see in the media space, in the name of public intellection, is it not stunning how it is that the intelligentsia has hardly been able to translate that into thinking and positioning itself onto gaining more foothold in the arena of power? One might ask: Of what use is this knowledge often professed, if it does not energise action into delivering value for the community? Of what use if it cannot be deployed with the aid of the necessary emotional intelligence to initiate change? It is easy to criticise from afar, but it is in putting in the necessary shift to strategise and organise that the questions challenge us. In
place of strategic thinking, these ‘totalitarian intellectuals’ will rather embrace with chronic cynicism, in the strange assumption that patriotism is all about criticism, even when there is inadequate or no knowledge of the subject at hand. In their minds, to suggest pragmatism in thought and engagement, to analyse outside the narrow framework of beating up Nigeria, is to be ‘providing talking points for the oppressors’, as one of them put it. For the ‘intellectuals’ to get involved in the governance process, in their closed minds, is a betrayal of the ‘cause’, when, in fact, some of them not only scout, behind the scene, for opportunities to ‘serve,’ but had indeed serviced other governments in the past, to no better outcomes than the ones they routinely criticise. Some of the lead actors in the unrelenting demonisation exercise of anyone not seen to echo them are, in fact, still giddy with the stale wine of 2015. They are only able to see through the corrupt lens of yesterday and every action of today is mandatorily processed through the mill around their necks, with only one possible outcome. In their words, ‘there is evil in the land on account of the acquiescence of the South-West intellectuals, who are only looking out for their own serving in government’. Cheap shots from a coterie of ‘totalitarian intellectuals’ unable to overcome the disappointment of 2015 in which they invested themselves in a choice that did not resonate with majority. They have now taken refuge under the tattered umbrella of ethnocentrism, in pretendpatriotism. Some of them, tucked away in the safety of the diaspora, spend their time preaching hate online, fiddling with our fault lines, in desperation to rewrite 2015 and muddy 2019, seeing that the outcome is beyond the pedestrian analysis they generously hawked only yesterday. They feed on fiction as basis for stifling and polluting reality. They have worn themselves the garb of a higher form of patriotism and to not endorse their choices or fly with their fake wings is to be not patriotic, it is to be acting out of bigotry, or how else do you explain this demonisation of so-called South-West intellectuals?. One of our diaspora ‘professors’, at his morbid worst, pronounces Professor Wole Soyinka ‘dead’, on the strength of his “The man dies in all who keep silent in the face of tyranny,” since according to him, the 84 year old Nobel laureate has been silent “in the midst of Buhari’s current asphyxiating tyranny”. If we humour ‘professor’ with the garb of locus, of which he is most unqualified for, it must then be that the gentleman has been in deep slumber to have missed out on the series of intervention on the part of this statesman, who doesn’t owes him or any person any explanation on when to speak or hold his silence. How ironic that the same ones who profess to be intellectuals can so easily forget that there is a plurality to thought and that the fact that they claim to be minded by their own convictions should make them extend such benefit to others as well, who might just be acting out their convictions, rather than engage in petty tyranny, dictating to others when and what to write or not write, even how to write it. In the case of our ‘professor’, he does not stop at dictating to others what they should write, it extends to what they wear. He declares Minister Solomon Dalung an “unhinged, empty-brained charlatan” for his
ceremonial attire to a Tarok event in Plateau state. That is the new face of tyranny by a Social Media Elite (SME) drunk on the wine of adulation from an audience unable to dig deeper beyond the few words fed them. No-one says President Buhari has gotten everything right. He has not done as well as he could have. He missed an opportunity, at the beginning, to take firm charge, but for his aloofness with the nitty-gritty of party politics which inevitably led to the emergence of the takeover of the legislature by amphibians, which has impacted negatively on the pursuit of his agenda. He also was unmindful of the mechanics of the reward system in politics which left many of those who served as foot-soldiers in his emergence in the cold, while old hands remained in charge of some agencies of government, with telling effects on governance and performance. In spite of the missteps and lapses, what the president has going for him is an army of supporters and believers who see what he is doing, where he is headed and have sworn to support him achieve these. They have not said he has no faults or that in many instances, things could not have been done differently. To demonise people, simply for their political choice and label them as stupid does not speak of good upbringing, which is the hallmark of an ‘Omoluabi’, which one would expect will come with proper education. To highlight gains and wins here and there with infrastructure projects, some of which had been long abandoned, is to be deemed unpatriotic. To acknowledge that pensioners, such as those of the defunct Nigerian Airways, who had been owed pensions since the Obasanjo era have now been paid N22 billion by the Buhari administration is to utter heresy. To say that the situation in 2015 was such that about two-thirds of the states had not paid their workers for many months and that through the bail-out fund and Paris Club refund from the federal government, the grim situation was remedied, is to be anti-intellectual. We must dismiss the N-Power programme that we might be able to retain our badge of honour. It has to always be doom and gloom, otherwise they would not be pleased. That haughtiness runs through, not just in the manner this section of the elite dismiss the essence and impact of the SIP and the Anchor Borrowers Programme by the Central Bank of Nigeria, it is evident in the snide remarks they make about the person of President Muhammadu Buhari. He apparently does not fit their perverted understanding of who qualifies to lead the country, given his ascetic outlook on life and an unwillingness to cater to the indulgences of those who believe they matter. There are different elements and variants to the disdain, with different caricatures created of the man, to make of him what he is not. The vilest of them publicly wished for his death, while the most gullible believe the lie that the man who occupies the office as Muhammadu Buhari is, in fact, a clone or body-double from Sudan. The confusion within their rank is evident in their muddled understanding of the legs upon which the cult-following Muhammadu Buhari enjoys among the people at the bottom of the pyramid rests. They struggle to understand how, in spite of the resources and energy invested in rewriting history and demonising the man,
he continues to stand on a firm ground, with his base largely intact, even when he does not deploy resources like others to oil the structure. If the section of the elite that has been restive on account of the emergence of President Buhari was more introspective, they would have invested themselves in a sober interrogation of the phenomenon but arrogance and lack of rigour won’t let them. They will rather remain consumed by the desire for power, unmindful of the fact that their lack of emotional intelligence, inability to see that the times have changed, and thus failing to connect the dots, will continue to do them in, reinforcing their frustration. That this category of intellectuals cannot properly read the Buhari phenomenon in Nigerian politics for what it is, reading themselves into their analyses in the most subjective manner, is not as strange as the fact that they are unable to gracefully accept the failure of their hypotheses. That there is a fanatical belief in Muhammadu Buhari by a large section of those at the bottom, especially in the North, should be easy to see. That confers on him an advantage, given the demographics and the higher level of political consciousness and participation in the region. One would think that the intellectual would be more invested in seeking an understanding of this, rather than resorting to habitual tantrums and insults, as has been the case. I doubt that any Nigerian leader has been able to directly connect with the minds and souls of Nigerians at the bottom of the pyramid as Muhammadu Buhari has been able to, since the days of Obafemi Awolowo, Aminu Kano and the phenomenal M.K.O Abiola. That should interest the analytical mind. As had been argued here over a year ago, barring a case of force majeure and/ or unprecedented developments that can dramatically impact the election, the incumbent president is set to be returned for a second term in office. He would, in fact do better across the six regions than he did in 2015, except for the NorthCentral. His performance will be better in both the South-East and South-South, where he did not do that well in the 2015 elections. That is something to say, given the vociferous campaign mounted to discredit his person and the administration he leads in the last three years. But it would appear that a lot of what used to fabricate at the top, that would so easily percolate to the bottom, no longer do so, as in time past. That must be reason for the panic and frustration in the circle of these ones who lay claim to a superior form of patriotism. But 2019 will send the men of yesterday, rattled by the loss of influence which they used to have, into a most needed retirement. If they have not taken a cue from the nothing that became of the Third Force, the result of the 2019 presidential election should help them. However, it would be foolhardy to expect same for the ‘intellectual wing’. If as at now, some are yet to get over 2015, what do we expect? They are already in the process of building up an alibi for that which, in their mind, they know to be inevitable. Even then, they never accept defeat. They don’t take the majority speaking a different language well. They always find a way to rationalise their loss, blaming everyone else but themselves. Totalitarian intellectuals are never wrong. That must be reason for their unending frustration.
It’s time to leave Keystone Bank, 9mobile out of politics

There have been interesting events in the political terrain in the past few weeks, but the one that has gained unnecessary attention was this allegation by Alhaji Abubakar Atiku, presidential flag-bearer of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP) that the president, Mohammadu Buhari and his family owned shares in Etisalat and Keystone Bank. He also called for probe into the substantial shares in Etisalat now known as 9mobile which has an estimated $2b (about N727b at 360 per dollar) of its estimated $20b global net worth. No doubt, all that have transpired in the political circles do not spring any surprise to many a political watcher, because we know it is all politics, going by the fact that 2019 elections are just few weeks away and this has elicited desperations from desperate politicians. However, the masses, nay the electorate will end up getting more confused as a direct product of spurious allegations like the aforementioned. Luckily, a group of investors in Lagos have
put things in the right perspectives, declaring that the sale of the two companies followed due processes with the involvements of industry regulators. They affirmed that neither President Muhammadu Buhari nor his family members owned shares in either Etisalat or Keystone Bank. The above explanation should have put paid to further grumbling over who owns either 9mobile or Keystone Bank. But it is so unfortunate that Nigerian politics have been reduced to this appalling dimension where an aspiring leader or leaders would leave issue-based discussions and campaigns to embark on mud-slinging and false claims. We as Nigerians expect our politicians to tell us what they have in stock for us when they claim the mantle of leadership, instead of beating about the bush just to hoodwink us. In recent times, careless talks and spurious allegations have had telling effects on businesses, Nigerians and it is high time we exercised restraints to save the nation. Are our
youths truly lazy? Succumbing to the carrots dangled by these politicians and helping them to spread their lies, peddling unfounded stories? Nigerian youths, this is a clarion call to put on your thinking caps ahead of the election. In a saner clime, the miraculous transformation experienced by Keystone Bank which was almost a dying entity a few years ago, would have attracted kudos and commendations from both the general public and politicians alike. It would be recalled that after many years in the doldrum and following its most recent acquisition by Sigma Golf-Riverbank consortium, Keystone Bank, for the half-year ended June 30, 2018, recorded a Profit Before Tax of N5.9billion compared with a loss of N7.1billion over the same period in 2017 while deposits have grown from N209billion in August 2017 (when the new management came on board) to N358billion as at November 2018. On the part of 9mobile, the Investor Group had said after about a year of back-and-forth

Election is defined as a formal and organised way of choosing people for a political office or other positions. In Nigeria, elective democracy was introduced in May 1919, when the Township Ordinance gave right to vote for three members of Lagos Town Council to some men. The first election to the council was held on 29 March 1920. The first national election to be held in Nigeria was in 1959, and in 1965. Elections were held in the southern region of Nigeria. After a long period of military rule, the 1983 general election took place. This was however cut short by the December 1983 coup that brought Muhammadu Buhari as Head of State. In 1993, the country witnessed another general election that was adjudged as the most free, fair and credible elections by both local and international observers. The said election was presumably won by Chief MKO Abiola, but sadly the results were annulled by the then Military President General Ibrahim Babangida. From 1999 till date, the country has enjoyed uninterrupted democratic dispensation witnessing four successive elections and the fifth coming up in February 2019. Election makes a fundamental contribution to democratic governance as it enables voters and citizens to choose leaders and representatives and to hold them responsible and accountable for their actions in office as they are only elected to serve the people for a defined period of time as allowed by the country’s constitution. In a developed democracy, because those in elective positions are conscious of the fact that they are required to submit themselves for periodic elections, they tend to put in their best to serve the people knowing full well that their performance will be the determining factor for their re-election. This is why we have high rate of fulfilling election campaign promises; it also go beyond individual candidates vying for various elective positions to the general political ideology. Moreover, where the electoral processes is competitive and forces parties and candidates to expose their records and future performances to proper scrutiny, election serves as a platform for the discussions and debates on public issues and policies. It also serves as facilitator of public expressions. Election thus provides political education for citizens and ensures the responsiveness of democratic governments to the yearnings of the people. It also serves as acts to legitimise the acts of those who wields power. Elections seem to facilitate social and political integrations and it is also a tool to actualize a selfactualising purpose by confirming the worth and dignity of individual citizens as human beings. Whatever other needs, participations in an elections serves to reinforce the worth and self esteem of individual voters. As 2019 general elections draw nearer, voting gives the citizenry an opportunity to have a say in issues pertaining to their lives and through expressing partisanship, to satisfy their needs to have a sense of belonging. Seeing the importance of elections and the powers of the electorate, it is therefore important for the electorate to know those characteristics an individual possess before casting their votes. In that case, the electorate can be glad with the choice of the candidate he or she made to
represent them at all level since the aim is to bring development to their communities. Whether held under authoritarian or democratic regimes, election has ritualistic aspects. Campaigns that precede elections are dramatic events occasioned by rallies, posters, banners, and television coverage, all of which draw attention to the importance of participations on the events. Candidates, groups and political parties and others representing diverse opinions and objectives combine to invoke the spirit of nationalism. Whatever the peculiar national or regional or local variations, elections are events that arouse emotions, and channelling these emotions and passions into collective symbols help in breaking the monotony of national life and focus attentions on the common fate. Most elections do not determine public policies but instead confer on a small group of officials the authority to determine public policies through the instrumentality of laws and other devices on behalf of the whole. Political parties are central to the elections of public officers, the selections and nominations of candidates, a central and vital first stage in the electoral processes, generally lies in the hands of political parties:, an election only serves as the final process in the recruitments of public officials. The party systems can thus be regarded as an extension of the electoral processes. In Nigeria today, we have repeated cases of vote buying which has made the electorate to deprive themselves of the right to question the performance of their elected representatives. This is so because the officials believe they bought the conscious of the people they are representing hence making them act as lords when in the real sense reverse should have been the case. For instance, an average Briton see himself as very busy, that is why he will tell you boldly that the Prime Minister is there to serve and they can hold her accountable for any slightest wrong committed and ultimately remove her from office if need be. This is why you have all elected officers performing based on their campaign promises. It is no longer news that in developed democracies politicians are removed from office for failure to account for just £1,000 or he can be made to explain why the state funds was used to pay for his utility bills. What do we have in Africa? Leaders feeding fat on our commonwealth and at the same time depriving us from questioning their actions because they believe with the state resources in their disposal they can have their way during any election period. This could have been avoided if credible individuals were voted in from the onset of the current democratic dispensation. However, it is not late to remedy the situation if we can collectively look at individual track records and vote wisely and not along party lines, but based on what we think they can offer and reject whatever the obviously morally bankrupt politicians are offering which will continue to make our collective development a mirage . Voting for the right candidates give us the latitude to call them to order whenever we feel they are not representing us well. This will no doubt lead to appreciable development of our country and we will all be glad to have lived a good legacy for the future generations.
OUR POSITION Out-of-school children and future leaders
N
igeria with the current figure of 13.2million out-of-school children occupies first position on the table of countries with the highest number of out-of-school children in the world certainly calls for sober reflection. More worrisome is the fact that the figure instead of decreasing in the last few years is rather increasing. This statistics which represent approximately 20 per cent of the world’s population of such children is an alarming and ticking time bomb that will spell doom for the country if urgent steps are not taken by relevant authorities to address the situation. We observe that governance in Nigeria has become a circle of family business where politicians secure the future of their children to the detriment of poor Nigerians. Also, inadequacy of funding, lack of teaching tools and modern classrooms, poor numerations and the acute shortage of qualified teachers are some of the factors leading to the fall in the standard of education in Nigeria. Recently, the Multiple Indication Cluster Survey report for 2016 (MICS 2016) revealed that out of the 11.5 million of out-of-school children in Nigeria, Northern states have the highest rate with an average of 69%. The latest data MICS 2016 showed that out of the 11.5 million out-of-school children in Nigeria, 7.5.million (69%) are from the Northern part of the country while the North East has the largest number of out-of-school children followed by the North West. With this number, Nigeria accounts for more than 1 in 5 number of out-of-school children globally and 45% of this number are from West Africa. Within the huge number of the out-ofschool children, girls are the majority especially in Northern Nigeria. Education indicators for Northern Nigeria are however different from the Southern part of the country. Nigeria’s future prosperity depends on producing children who are well prepared to take their right place in the society but unfortunately, a large number of Nigerian children are at risk of deprivations of the basic social amenities. Most of these children are situated in the rural areas and hard to reach communities. Majority of them are living in conflict and communities under emergencies, and it has been difficult taking basic amenities to them. All children have the right to better life, an opportunity to survive, develop and reach their full potentials without discrimination, bias or favouritism which cannot be over emphasised. We also observe that the rising number of children engaged in street trading in our major cities is becoming a worsening menace. The problem is further exacerbated by rising poverty and general insecurity in the country. In the North, the ravaging insurgency has added to the problem. If drastic measures are not taken to correct the situation, things would only get worse. Let us learn from France, Britain, Canada and other advanced countries which built the foundation of their countries and rapid technological advancement on good and quality education. It must be pointed out also that in these countries, teachers are amongst
the best paid workers. Unfortunately, the reverse is the case in Nigeria. Having failed to fund public education, the children of the poor are roaming the streets, hawking goods while the rich are educating their children in private schools at home and abroad. But to the detriment of the society, the abandoned children of the poor are being recruited to criminality by terrorists, kidnappers and other criminal gangs. The irony of the crisis is that a government, which claims that it lacks money to fund education is spending several billions of naira to fight insurgency, kidnapping, armed robbery and banditry. We believe that an uneducated population will be locked in a cycle of poverty for their entire lives. Additionally, these children could constitute the next generation of suicide bombers and militants. We are of the opinion that it is high time the government and relevant stakeholders address the problem frontally. It is sad that government’s free education for all pupils up to the first nine years of schooling has not been fully implemented. There is the need to increase the percentage of the annual national budget that goes to education. Schools should be adequately funded and the enabling environment provided for teachers and support staff to deliver functional and effective education to the children. We submit that the improvement of the classroom environment is key to lowering the growing figures of out-of-school children in the country. We also wish to state that teachers must not only be well trained, their welfare must be prioritised while the Federal Government should muster the political will to adequately fund education.

I’ll do more to secure Nigeria, Buhari assures Mathew Dadiya, Abuja President Muhammadu Buhari has reiterated his administration’s commitment to secure the country from any form of crimes. Buhari gave the assurance on Monday when he hosted a delegation from Borno State, during which he reasserted his administration’s unwavering support to equip the military to overcome the insurgency in the North-East. He also told the delegation led by Governor Kashim Shettima of Borno State that the collective safety and security of civilians would continue to remain paramount in the administration’s strategy to restore peace and stability in the region. ‘‘Having been a former Governor in the North East, a GOC in the region and very familiar with the terrain, I assure you that as Commander-inChief, I’ll raise the standard of the Nigerian Armed Forces and get the resources to encourage them to do better than what they are doing, ’’ he said. The President told the delegation
comprising political, traditional, religious, women and media leaders in the State that he was impressed by their leadership roles and participation in helping the government deal with the insurgency in the North East. The President commended the contributions of the stakeholders from Borno State particularly the need for more air support for troops on the ground and coordination among different security agencies. ‘‘I am getting at least a weekly situation report from the services and of course from other sources. I encourage the commanders to remain committed,’’ he said. President Buhari thanked Governor Shettima for demonstrating leadership in the State during these difficult times. ‘‘I have an idea how much you are doing and I very much appreciate it. I’m sure that has earned you more respect from the people,’’ he said. Earlier in his remarks, Governor Shettima recounted that before 2015, Boko Haram had almost completely overrun the State, occupying many local government areas because the
state government did not receive the necessary support and succour from the then Federal Government. Short News Ondo athletes protest non-payment of 16 months allowance

Adewale Momoh, Akure For the members of staff of the Ondo State Ministry of Sports working at the state’s sports council who had envisaged resuming for the day’s business after the weekend, their plan was truncated due to the shutting of the complex gate. No thanks to the protest embarked upon by athletes in the state who accused the state government of allegedly owing them 16 months allowances. The athletes who prevented workers from gaining access into the complex as well as their colleagues who had arrived as early as 6am for their trainings, disclosed that aside the non payment of their allowances, they are being paid ridiculous stipend, which according them is as low as N3,000 monthly per athlete. Armed with placards, the athletes maintained that “All We Are Saying Pay Our Six Months Stipend, Enough of Suffering”; No More Scoping We Need Our 16 Months Allowances, Enough Is Enough”; “ No Alert No Opening of Gate.” According to a weight lifter, Bankole Michael who lamented that Ondo athletes are languishing in penury due to the insensitivity of the state government to the welfare of athletes, maintained that they were promised to be paid during the just concluded National Sports Festival held in Abuja but all to no avail. “It’s quite unfortunate what we are going through in our state as athletes. “During the festival at Abuja, we went through hell, we agitated before the meagre stipend of N2,000 was paid to us out of the N75 million naira released for the festival. “After the crisis in Abuja where we (athletes) were subjected to untold hardship, the officials promised that all the allowances would be paid before the yuletide, but none of that came to fruition.

N132m alleged fraud: EFCC arraigns Ex-Sec, Short News Adamawa Pilgrim Welfare Board, 3 others Buhari appoints Tukur as Andrew Orolua, Abuja The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Gombe zonal office, on Monday, arraigned Lucious Mayo, Elisie Yaduwa, Elisha Yahaya and Rhoda Samson before Justice Nathan Musa of an Adamawa State High Court. They were arraigned on a nine-count charge bordering on “conspiracy, obtaining money by false pretence, diversion, inflation of contract price, forgery and refusal to make full disclosure of assets” to the EFCC. Mayo is alleged to have, as Executive Secretary of the state’s Christian Pilgrims Welfare Board, connived with Yaduwa, the Director of Finance and Account; Yahaya, Accountant, and Samson, cashier, to divert to personal use, about N132 million out of N347, 848,220 only released in 2016 by the Adamawa State government to cater for the pilgrimage exercise of Christians from the state. They are also alleged to have collected and diverted about N2.54 million from four “selfsponsored” pilgrims, who paid the money into the Board’s account.
Further investigations also revealed that in 2016, Mayo sold registration forms to 1,569 intending pilgrims at N10, 000 each, amounting to N15,690,000 million only. This was in spite of the fact that many pilgrims were sponsored by the Adamawa State Government. The money was also never remitted neither to the Board’s account, nor the state’s Revenue Board account. It was also revealed that the Head of Medicals received the sum of N3, 5000, 000 for drugs procurement, but was expressly instructed to return N1, 5000, 000 to the Director of Finance, without being given treasury receipt. A fictitious payment voucher for N3, 500, 000 was later raised by the accountant to cover up the fraudulent diversion. Another N26.34 million was obtained by the first defendant from the intending pilgrims under the false pretence that the money was to be used for upgrading their Basic Travelling Allowance, BTA from minimum seat of $500 to maximum seat of $750 each, but instead, diverted to his personal use. Investigation also showed that the Board issued a contract for the supply of wrappers
(uniforms) at N2, 500 to each pilgrim. But Mayo inflated the price by N1, 000 each, generating N1 million and diverted same to his personal use. One of the counts reads: “That you, DR. LUCIOUS JINGA MAYO in your capacity as Executive Secretary, Christian Pilgrim Welfare Board, Adamawa State, sometimes between August and December 2016, or thereabout at Yola, Adamawa State within the Jurisdiction Of this Honourable Court, with intent to defraud, did obtain monies in the sum of Eighty Four Million, Nine Hundred and Forty Eight Thousand, Six Hundred Naira (N84,948,600) from the Government of Adamawa State under the false pretence that, the money be used for the expenses of Local Government sponsored Christians Pilgrims for the 2016 Pilgrimage which sum you diverted to your own use, thereby committed an offence contrary to the provision of Section 1 (1) (a) of the Advance Fee Fraud and other Fraud Related Offences Act, LFN and Punishable under Section 1 (3) of the same Act”. They pleaded “not guilty” to the charges when they were read to them. Prosecuting counsel, A.Y. Muntaka, thereafter asked for a date for commencement of trial.

Mathew Dadiya, Abuja President Muhammadu Buhari has nominated Modibbo Hamman Tukur as a Director of the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU). Senior Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, on Monday, stated that the appointment, which is subject to the senate confirmation, was in accordance with the provision of Section 5(1) of the NFIU Act 2018. Tukur’s nomination was contained in a letter dated January 7, 2019 to the Senate President seeking the confirmation of the nominee by the Upper Chamber of the National Assembly. Tukur, from Adamama State, is a holder of Master of Science (MSc) degree in International Business. He is currently an Assistant Director in the NFIU, and has vast international experience in illegal assets recovery. The Daily Times recalls that President Muhammadu Buhari had in July 2018, signed the NFIU Bill into law.
Okowa tasks INEC, security agencies on credible elections
Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies to ensure free, fair and transparent elections. Okowa made the call on Monday in Asaba when the management of Silverbird Communications led by its Chairman, Editorial Board, Mr. Jacob AkinyemiJohnson, paid him a courtesy visit. The visit was to present a letter of nomination to Okowa as the 2018 Silverbird Man of the Year Award. Okowa said that the award would spur people of the state to work in unity and achieve more developmental successes. “Nigerians expect that we will have free and fair general elections in February and March 2019.

Stakeholders charge private sector, others to join fight against HIV/AIDS Mutiat Alli, Lagos Owing up to the fact that HIV/AIDS is an unprecedented crisis that demands an exceptional response, stakeholders have charged private sector organisations, dedicated researchers, health care professionals, clinical trial participants and members of the global community not to relent in ensuring that the spread of HIV/AIDS in Nigeria is reduced to the barest minimum. This charge was made over the weekend at the Nigerian Business Coalition against AIDS [NiBUCCA] high impact CEO partnership Dinner. While addressing newsmen, Executive Secretary, NiBUCCA, Gbenga Alabi, noted that it is important for the private sector to partner with NIBUCAA in its drive to eradicate HIV/AIDS from Nigeria, quoting Juan Somavia, a former Director General of the International Labour Organisation, who said two out of three people living with HIV/ AIDS go to work every day, making the workplace

To further buttress his point, Group Managing Director of Access Bank Plc, Herbert Wigwe, in the same vein, urged operators in the private sector to join hands in the fight against the spread of HIV/
AIDS. Wigwe, who is a Co-Chair of the board of NIBUCAA, said that the scourge of HIV/AIDS still persists in the country with Nigeria having the second largest AIDS population in the world. “We have to realise that HIV/AIDS is not just a health problem, it is a developmental challenge. Therefore, the private sector cannot afford to be complacent with regards to the scourge. It is eminently desirable that private sector supports all efforts geared towards the realisation of the goal of the multi-sectoral response to HIV pandemic in particular under the Sustainable Development Goals,” he added. In his own comment at the dinner party, Nicolas Terras, Managing Director of Total E&P Nigeria and a Co-chair of NIBUCAA board, said the fight against HIV/AIDS is too big for the government to handle alone. According to him, captains of industries have collective leadership roles to play in the multisectoral response to HIV and AIDS, adding that the scourge is one that must be won at all costs.
The Lagos State House of Assembly on Monday resumed plenary without deliberations on Governor Akinwunmi Ambode’s 2019 budget proposal. The lawmakers commenced a three-week recess on December 18, 2018 for the Christmas and New Year holidays. The House which resumed on Monday, failed to discuss any issue before adjourning to Thursday, January 10, due to its inability to form a quorum. The session was presided over by the Majority Leader, Mr. Sanai Agunbiade, representing Ikorodu Constituency I. The Lagos State Government on January 3 said it had already presented to the house an N852. 317 billion budget proposal for 2019. The government had been criticised for not keeping to its tradition of presenting its annual budget before the beginning of a new year.
General elections: Mrs. Bagudu urges youths to shun thuggery
The wife of Kebbi State governor, Dr. Zainab Bagudu, has urged youths in the North West to shun thuggery during the 2019 general election. Bagudu, who is the Coordinator of Presidential Campaign Team (PCT) for the North West, gave the advice while speaking at a news conference in Birnin Kebbi on Monday. She said youths should not allow themselves to be used by politicians to carry out such acts or engage in violence of any kind before, during and after the upcoming general election. “President Muhammadu Buhari has come up with numerous projects in order to encourage youths and women to be self -reliant and become productive members of the society. “Among these projects, we have the school feeding programme for primary school pupils, the N-Power programme, under which some unemployed graduates are being gainfully engaged and are earning N30,000 monthly. “There is also conditional cash transfer scheme, which is being executed through the office of Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, ” she said.

Idu Jude, Abuja Leadership of the organised labour Monday said it will today, (Tuesday) stage a nationwide mobilisation rally to sensitise members against federal government’s action and not embarking on strike as being misrepresented in the media. The Secretary General of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), Dr. Peter Eso, in a press statement said that the labour union is fully mobilising its member associations nationwide to raise the people’s consciousness before locking down the nation. According to the scribe, “the NLC would like to use this opportunity to clarify some issues regarding the proposed strike action. Let me state here that the Organised Labour,
has noticed in some section of the news media, information about the proposed strike action, which largely misrepresented our action plan in reaction to the delay in transmitting the recommendations of the Tripartite Committee on a new National Minimum Wage to the National Assembly by President Mohammadu Buhari”. The labour union noted that the National Executive Council of NLC met on 17th of December last year and directed that it holds nationwide mobilisation of workers and allies if by 31st December 2018 the bill on the National Minimum Wage was not transmitted to the National Assembly. “This is because the recommendation has yet to be sent to the National Assembly to be passed as an Act of Parliament. We immediately announced then that on
Tuesday, 8th January 2019, there will be a nationwide mass mobilisation and protests simultaneously across all states in Nigeria. This does not translate to a strike. “It is on record that each time we had cause to embark on a national strike, we say so publicly without any equivocation. We still don’t understand where the story about a strike commencing tomorrow came from. “Already, all our State Councils, affiliate unions and allies in other pro people mass organisations now popularly referred to as Civil Society Organisations have been fully informed and mobilised to ensure the success of tomorrow’s mass protests in all the states and the Federal Capital Territory. “When a date is decided for the commencement of the strike subsequently, we will inform the public appropriately”.

A decomposing corpse was found last week in a gutter opposite Obowo Police station, Otoko, by passersby who perceived the odour of the corpse. The corpse of the young man likely to be in his late 20s shows that he was burnt and dropped in the gutter by unknown people. The corpse, which might have stayed not less than one week started emitting bad odour, disturbing the people in that area, especially the Obowo Police station and Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corp (NSCDC), Obowo branch, whose office are directly opposite the place. At the time of this report Daily Times met some Health workers from Obowo Local Government Area, who were preparing a shallow grave to bury the corpse, in a nearby bush. The Health workers who came with a policeman said they formally informed the police before taking action.

Akpugo people endorse Gov Ugwuanyi for second term Moses Oyediran, Enugu The people of Akpugo in Nkanu West Local Government Area of Enugu State comprising 12 autonomous communities have unanimously endorsed Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi for a second term in office. Rising from a well attended meeting of the leadership of the town union of the autonomous communities, constituent villages, major markets and all the kindred families, the Akpugo people commended Governor Ugwuanyi for his uncommon leadership style and giant development strides across the state, especially in their area. Eagle eyed operatives of the Lagos State Police Command have arrested one Sikiru Tanimowo for allegedly kidnapping a fouryear old boy at the Okokomaiko area of Lagos. Narrating how the suspect was arrested, the Lagos State Police Commissioner of Police, CP Imohimi Edgal said information was received from a credible source that a man was seen moving around Otun Market Square in a suspicious manner, holding the little boy in his hand. Based on the information, operatives of the command attached to Okokomaiko Division, moved swiftly to the location and arrested the 37 year old suspect. Edgal said, “ After his arrest, the suspect later led detectives to the location where he picked the child, thus, the police were able to locate his parents who said that they have been looking for the child and have never met the suspect before.” The Police Commissioner said the case is currently under investigation with a view to prosecuting the suspect in the court of law. Meanwhile, the child has been reunited with his parents.

The appeal contains 35 grounds of appeal and raised 11 issues upon which it was determined. ISSUES 1.Whether the learned trial judge rightly assumed and exercised territorial jurisdiction and entertained the offences charged in Counts 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12,13,14,15,17, 19,21,23 and 25 of the charge preferred against the Appellant. In our country, Nigeria , there is a pervasive proclivity of public officers to regard or treat Security Votes given to them for the security of the State as their personal entitlement or funds, the expenditure of which they are not accountable to the government that gave them the funds to be used for the public purpose or the citizens for whose security it was meant. It is glaring from the totality of the forgoing that the trial court’s conviction of the appellant for the offences in Counts 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12,13,14,15,16,17,18,19, 20,25,,27,28,39,30,31, 33 and 36 was based on its belief of the prosecution’s evidence and disbelief of the defence evidence. By this appeal the appellant has invited this court to set aside the convictions on the ground that they are not justified by the evidence before the trial court. I have held that the trial courts belief of the testimonies of the prosecution witnesses are supported by the evidence before it and that such belief is reasonable. Therefore this court cannot interfere with the trial Court’s belief of the prosecution’s evidence and disbelief of the defence evidence and the interferences of facts arising from such belief.........
After convicting the appellant for the offences in counts 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12,13,14,15,16,17,18,19,20,25,,27,28,3 9,30,31, 33 and 36 and after considering the allocutus of the appellant and before pronouncing the sentence for each offence, the trial court stated thusly “I am morally outraged with the facts of this case. The citizens of Taraba State elected Reverend Jolly Tevoru Nyame ,a clergyman as Governor on three separate occasions which showed a consistent level of trust in him, Their expectations were so high and as a Reverend, he must have been seen as an Epitome of Morality, piety Honesty and everything Good....... This is the first case of its kind where a Governor is found to have committed such impunity . The court must therefore impose a sentence that would hopefully serve as a deterrent to such other public officers, who may be similarly inclined to deep their hands into public Till. Accordingly, this court would be failing in its responsibilities ,if it fails to throw the book at the defendant. Having found the defendant guilty as charged in regard to these counts of the offences under criminal breach of trust ,the court hereby sentenced the defendant ,Rev. Jolly Tevoru Nyame to terms of imprisonment in each of these offences as follows. The above considerations of the trial court before it pronounced the sentences for each of the offences it found that the appellant committed substantially comply with the guiding principles prescribed in S. 311(2) and (3) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act 2015. It is obvious that the trial court did not consider the appropriateness of non custodial sentence as an option to a custodial sentence as required by S.311(2)(c) of ACJA. The trial Court was right to have punished the commission of the offences if criminal breach of trust by Public servant or agent with imprisonment without consideration of the appropriateness of a fine as an option. It has no discretion to make such consideration because S.315 of the Panel Code that provide for the punishment of such an offence requires the trial court to impose both an imprisonment term and fine and does not give the court the discretion to choose to impose a term of imprison or fine but both imprisonment and fine........ The trial court did not impose the additional punishment of fine it was bound by S.315 Panel Code Act to impose for criminal breach of trust . Accordingly, this court orders that in addition to the term of imprisonment imposed for each count of criminal breach of trust , the appellant shall pay fine of N100m for each of the offences in counts 1,2,6, fine of N50m for the offences in counts 10, 12,14, fine of N10m for each of offences in counts 16, 18,20,27,29,30,31and 33, fine of N5m for the offences in count 36. In the light if above issue No 11 was resolved in favour of the appellant in part. On the whole the appeal fails, except as regard the sentences imposed by the trial court. Therefore the judgment of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory in Criminal Case No FCT/ ABJ/ CR/ 82/2007delivered on 30/5/2018 by A.A.I.Banjoko J. is affirmed and upheld except with regards to the sentences imposed therein. The said sentences are set aside and replaced with the following sentences: Counts 1, 2, 6 twelve years imprisonment each and in addition fine of N100m each Count 8, twelve years imprisonment each and in addition fine of N50m ,counts 10, 12, 14, twelve years imprisonment each and in addition fine of N20m , Counts 16, 18, 20, 27, 29,30,31,33, twelve years imprisonment each and in addition fine of N10m each, count 36 twelve years imprisonment and in addition fine of N5m . While Count 3,7,9,11,13,15,17,19,21,23,25, one year nine months with no option of fine. Count 4 five years imprisonment and count 5 four years imprisonment without option of fine. Minimum wage: “It is only a mass protest and not strike”, labour clarifies Motolani Oseni The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has confirmed plans to embark on a mass mobilisation of workers for a protest on Tuesday, January 8, 2019, to express displeasure over the delay in transmitting the recommendations of the Tripartite Committee on a new National Minimum Wage to the National Assembly by President Mohammadu Buhari. The union, in a statement on Monday, by the General Secretary, Dr. Peter Ozo-Eson, clarified misinterpreted reports which said that the actions for today is strike action. Stating that, the National Executive Council of the NLC had directed that a nationwide protest be observed, if by 31st December 2018 the bill on the National
Minimum Wage is yet to be sent to the National Assembly to be passed as an Act of Parliament. The statement read in part: “It has come to our attention that some sections of the news media have misrepresented mainly our action plan in reaction to the delay in transmitting the recommendations of the Tripartite Committee on a new national minimum wage to the National Assembly by President Muhammadu Buhari. “It should be recalled that the National Executive Council of the NLC met on December 17 last year and directed that we hold nationwide mobilisation of workers and our allies if, by December 31, 2018, the bill on the national minimum wage has yet to be sent to the National Assembly to be passed as an Act of Parliament. “We immediately announced then that
on Tuesday, January 8, 2019, there will be a nationwide mass mobilisation and protests simultaneously across all states in Nigeria. This does not translate to a strike.” “When a date is decided for the commencement of a strike subsequently, we will inform the public appropriately”. Vitafoam Nigeria announces N260.51m dividend, bonus shares Temitope Adebayo Vitafoam Nigeria Plc has announced that it has recommended payment of N260.51 million dividend and distribution of bonus shares to shareholders for the financial year ended September 30, 2018. World Bank President, Kim to step down February 1st The World Bank Group president, Jim Yong Kim, on Monday announced he would be stepping down from his position effective February 1, 2019. Mr. Kim’s announcement is coming more than three years ahead of the end of his tenure in 2022. “It has been a great honour to serve as President of this remarkable institution, full of passionate individuals dedicated to the mission of ending extreme poverty in our lifetime,” Kim said his statement on Monday. In his place, the World Bank Group
CEO, Kristalina Georgieva, will assume the role of interim president effective February 1. Mr. Kim said the work of the World Bank Group is more important now than ever as the aspirations of the poor rise all over the world. He said problems like climate change, pandemics, famine and refugees continue to grow in both their scale and complexity. “Serving as President and helping position the institution squarely in the middle of all these challenges has been a great privilege,” Kim said.
As World Bank President since July 2012, the outgoing World Bank Group head noted infrastructure finance as one of the greatest needs in the developing world. He said he led the Group to mobilize its financing by working with private sector partners to build sustainable, climatesmart infrastructure in developing nations. Immediately after his exit, Mr. Kim said he would join a firm focussing on increasing infrastructure investments in developing countries. He said details of his new position would be made public later. Under his Presidency of the Group, Mr.
Kim said the World Bank set the target of ending extreme poverty by 2030 and to grow shared prosperity, by focusing on the 40 percent of the population in developing countries. Besides, he said the Bank enjoyed strong support from shareholders to better position it to respond to the development needs, particularly its Fund for the poorest, the International Development Agency (IDA), which achieved record replenishments that enabled it to increase its work in areas suffering from fragility, conflict, and violence.

Cross River guber: Alleged adoption of APC candidate, John Enoh, a scam – CNPP The Conference of Nigerian Political Parties in Cross River State has denied the alleged adoption of Senator John Owan-Enoh of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as a consensus governorship candidate, describing the report as a scam. Addressing a world press conference at Transcorp Hotel in Calabar on Monday, the Chairman of the group, Sunday Michael said “As a matter of fact, the said adoption, which in truth was nothing but a scam, with all the ingredients of fraud spiced around it, was attended by 12 political parties and not 15 as it was so claimed. “The Chairmen of the misrepresented parties are here to refute all claims with same ready to suspend their governorship candidates for adopting an unsellable candidate and for anti party activities. Who is fooling who?” The group dissociated its members made up of 43 political parties from such charade, saying “Indeed, we are flummoxed and aghast beyond comprehension as to why a politician in the Class of Senator Owan-Enoh will be so gullible and or perhaps out of desperation to govern the state be so deceived by inconsequential political scavengers, impersonators and desperados.” The group queried, “On what basis was Sen. Owan Enoh adopted as a consensus candidate when he and Dr Usani Usani are laying claims to the same ticket? Who authorised the eight governorship candidates to carry out the adoption when chairmen of the said parties have since denied their involvement in the said adoption?
Owan-Enoh “The fact of the matter is that we cannot throw our weight behind someone who lacks a distinguished track record of performance or selfless service. How many people oriented bills can Owan Enoh boasts of having initiated? “Until recently, the road from Calabar through Ikom to Obaanliku was a death trap, yet Owan Enoh has been an elected representative for 20
years now. So how does he justify the office he is seeking to occupy? “We are putting finishing touches on our planned adoption of one of our candidates on the 20th January 2019 by 4pm here at Transcorp, the event will be attended by all political parties and their exco, the national executive of the CNPP, civil society groups among other dignitaries,” Michael stated.
Olujimi wants Atiku’s Campaign Council in Ekiti dissolved The Senate Minority Leader, Senator Biodun Olujimi, has petitioned the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Chairman, Chief Uche Secondus, calling on the National Working Committee (NWC) to disband and reconstitute the Atiku Abubakar Campaign Council in Ekiti State. Olujimi accused former Governor Ayodele Fayose of hijacking the council and injecting his cronies in all strategic positions with the sinister intention to sideline other members of the party from participating in mobilising for the PDP presidential candidate during this year’s election. The senator told Secondus to compel Fayose to adhere strictly to the resolution reached by stakeholders on how the council should be composed at a stakeholders’ meeting held in Ado Ekiti on December 28, 2018, to forestall cracks and crisis in the party ahead of the much awaited polls. In a petition dated January 6, 2018 and signed by the PDP senator, she said only immediate dissolution of the highly ‘lopsided’ campaign council can avert unnecessary cleavages in Ekiti PDP, warning that failure to accede
to the request could dim the party’s chances in the state. Of particular reference, she alluded to a publication in the newspapers wherein changes were made to members of Atiku/Obi Campaign Council for Ekiti State without notifying the stakeholders, describing such as “demeaning and mischievous”. “The original composition had Prof. Olusola Kolapo as the chairman, Otunba Yinka Akerele as Director General, and Chief Sanya Atofarati as spokesperson/director of media among others while the position of secretary did not exist in the original composition by the national directorate. “But the publication, which I am rejecting, has Prof. Olusola as chairman, Chief Dipo Anisulowo as DG, Chief Gboyega Oguntuase as Secretary, Jackson Adebayo as spokesperson, and Lere Olayinka as Director, Media and Publicity,” she said. Olujimi warned that the PDP may lose the state to the All Progressives Congress (APC) despite people’s resolve to vote against the ruling party in the presidential poll if urgent remedial action is not taken to rectify this perceived injustice.
It reads: “It has become imperative to swiftly alert the National Campaign Council of our great party, PDP, and the general public to kindly disregard the misleading publication as to the actual composition of the Campaign Council. The purported publication is not only untrue but also contravenes the prescribed provisions of our party’s guidelines and directive. “It should be understood that this is another orchestrated plan of former Governor Ayo Fayose to convert the party’s resources and fortunes to his personal enterprise as usual. “He did it during the last governorship election and our party paid dearly for it in spite of my advice, warnings and outcry. Once beaten is twice shy. “The publication reportedly cited the cronies and stooges of Mr Ayo Fayose as Chairman, Secretary, Director General, Spokesperson, Director of Media & Publicity among others. “This is most unacceptable as Ekiti people and Nigerians cannot afford to lose this golden opportunity to change the APC-led maladministration both at the national and state levels for one person’s self-centredness,” she said.

Zakari speaks on why security threat persists in the north The chairman, Arewa community in Eti-Osa area of Lagos State, Alhaji Zakari Mohammed has charged Northerners not to waver in their support for President Muhammadu Buhari, citing the fact that he has tackled Boko Haram 95 percent contrary to what obtains years back, when the insurgent group laid siege on 19 local governments in the northern parts of the country. According to Zakari who is also the chairman of Adamawa Youth Association, his community four years ago was under the firm grip of Boko Haram and this scuttled the economic advancement of the people, but that thanks to Buhari, normalcy is now restored and people have their life restored in Adamawa and many other parts of the northern parts of the state. “Now we are saying Boko Haram this and that, before Buhari came to power, they were holding hostage 19 local governments. “Buhari has tackled the Boko Haram issue 95 percent, the remaining are barely due to those still trading with the misfortune. “If I am Buhari I don’t need to campaign, the actions speaks for me, what he has done will speak for him. If Buhari has 80million votes before now it should be double the number. I don’t believe any Arewa person will vote for any other body but Buhari. “I am from Adamawa like I mentioned earlier and for the past 16 years chairman of Adamawa Youths Association, it is we that know Atiku very well, we know what he can do, so please we are not going to criticise Atiku, but let him go and rest and let Buhari finish what he had started. “Boko Haram took over my community for two years, they rule and do everything they want there but today, it is unbelievable

that our farmers now go to farm, they can sleep outside in the house without fear of attack, they can go to church and mosque, it is a big improvement. “So for that we will vote Buhari in because of security and peace.” Zakari also cited the fact that the war against insurgency has been politicised to an extent that men of the Nigerian Army, do more of business than prosecution of war against the insurgent Boko Haram. “What I observe is that there are political interests responsible for the sustenance of the security threats in the North East, there are some people that have interest in this Boko Haram issue, they have turned to business. “We have seen it physically, you can send somebody to go and fight war and that person turns to become a business man there. “You find out that it is the Army selling yam, clothes, meat in the market, they are even the ones buying things from the farms, how do you succeed in prosecuting such war when you are making money? You don’t want the war to end. “It is not that Boko Haram has overpowered out Army no! They have turned this thing into business, in times past when they deploy Army to the North East, some will want to resign but now they pay money to go there. Knowing they will make money, once this cease the war will come to an end,” Zakari asserts. Zakari however, noted that the chairman of the Lagos State Arewa United Political Forum, Alhaji Dandamma Yabo deserves to be given the recognition by the state government, having been a selfless leader that rallies all the Arewa people in Lagos from the 57 local governments.

Inaugural ATP Cup for men holds in Sydney next January
The inaugural edition of the $15 million ATP Cup men’s team event will be hosted in Sydney, Brisbane and one other city in the lead-up to the Australian Open next January, Tennis Australia announced on Monday. Sydney, which will host the knockout rounds and final, announced a A$50.5 million ($36 million) upgrade of the Olympic Tennis Center venue on Friday, which includes putting a roof on the main showcourt. Perth, which has hosted the mixed team Hopman Cup for the last 30 years, and Adelaide are the other cities likely to be in the running to host the group stage of the event along with Brisbane. The 24-team tournament is seen as a threat to the International Tennis Federation’s (ITF) revamped 18-nation Davis Cup competition starting in Madrid in November. The new ATP event also has major implications for the other men’s and mixed events in Australia and further afield that have traditionally been used by
players to prepare for the year’s first grand slam at Melbourne Park. Brisbane will host ATP Cup matches along with the existing WTA event for women but there is likely to be no men’s draw at the Brisbane International from next year. Sydney also currently hosts men and women’s draws at the Sydney International — a tournament with a history dating back to 1885 — in the week before the Australian Open. No details were given about how the hosting of the Jan. 3-12 ATP Cup would affect the men’s event but Tennis Australia said there could potentially be a new women’s tournament in Australia. The most contentious potential casualty of the restructuring is the Hopman Cup, which was won by Swiss pairing Roger Federer and Belinda Bencic at the weekend. Popular with the players, and organized by the ITF

rather than the tours, the event has been played out in front of healthy crowds in Perth since 1989 but is unlikely to survive without any top male players. Tennis Australia is contracted to host the tournament until 2022 and are on record as having said they “planned to honour” that agreement with the local government in Western Australia. Craig Tiley, who is chief executive of Tennis Australia as well as co-organizer of the ATP Cup, said the time was right to expand the sport’s offering to Australian tennis fans. “We want more players rewarded, more opportunities for them, more opportunities for fans to get to see them … more global exposure for the sport,” he added. “A major step toward achieving that vision is to deliver world-class tennis to cities across Australia, which is what the ATP Cup will do. “It is the next piece in a vision that will ultimately grow tennis and provide inspiration for future generations.”
Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr to test new, regular players against Egypt
Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr has revealed that he would be testing some new players when the Eagles clash with the Pharaohs of Egypt in the much anticipated international friendly match slated for Late Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba, in March. Shortly after the 2018 World Cup held in Russia, Rohr extended invitations to these four players namely Samuel Kalu, Samuel Chukwueze, Semi Ajayi and Jamilu Collins and the players have since proved to be quality addition to the Eagles by seamlessly blending into the
first team of the senior National football team. That has impressed and also motivated the Franco-German football tactician who is now planning to test fresh legs against the Egyptians. The Eagles gaffer had told newsmen late December 2018 that he had been moving across Europe to personally watch some of the matches involving Super Eagles’ players in their various clubs in Europe and has also discovered few quality players that he may like to test against the Egyptian national team. Besides that Rohr has
concluded plans with his assistants to watch live some of the matches of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) in order to get fresh legs to be included in the pools of talents needed by the Eagles to succeed this year and beyond. “We are using the friendly against strong Egypt National team to test some players. “I and my assistants are not taking the friendly match against Egypt lightly. Guinea accepts to host Amaju Pinnick: CAF will pick the best 2025 Africa Cup of Nations candidate to host 2019 Nations Cup Guinea has accepted to stage the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations instead of the 2023 edition, a move that confirms Cameroon as the 2021 hosts, the Confederation of African Football president said Monday. “I am delighted with this change in the organisation of the calendar that will see the Nations Cup take place in Guinea in 2025 and I am proud that the president of Guinea, Alpha Conde, has himself accepted,” Ahmad Ahmad said. Ahmad, who held talks with Conde on Sunday, told reporters it was a similar situation to Cameroon, which will stage the 2021 tournament having been stripped of hosting this year’s edition. In 2014, CAF awarded hosting rights to Cameroon (2019), Ivory Coast (2021) and Guinea (2023). Following the decision to remove this year’s edition from Cameroon because of severe delays in building stadiums and
security concerns, Egypt and South Africa have bid to step in as hosts. CAF will announce on Wednesday which of the two countries has won the right to host the tournament, with the clock ticking to the June 15 kickoff. Ivory Coast will now host the tournament in 2023.
President of the Nigeria Football Federation and the 1st Vice President of the Confederation of African Football, Amaju Pinnick has pledged that the African football –ruling body will vote for the best –qualified candidate between Egypt and South Africa to host this year’s Africa Cup of Nations finals. Pinnick, who is also President of the AFCON Organizing Committee, told thenff .com that his committee has analysed the strengths of the two bidding nations and would advise CAF on the better option ahead of Wednesday’s meeting of the CAF Executive Committee that will select the host country. “The AFCON committee of which I am the chairman has done a SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats) on both bidding countries and we will meet on the sideline of the CAF Football Awards to finally decide on the best option and present same to CAF before Wednesday’s meeting,” Pinnick told the thenff .com. “The interest of African football is paramount in this. It is important that we get this right so that the selected country can quickly put structures in place for the championship which is only about five months away.” CAF had in November 2018 stripped designated host, Cameroon, of the right to host the 2019 AFCON as a result of delays in construction and security threats. Egypt and South Africa have differing strengths with regards to their individual bids to host the 32nd Africa Cup of Nations finals holding this summer. This year’s edition will be the first to entertain 24 teams. South Africa hosted and won the 1996 finals that was taken away from Kenya for ill-preparedness, and then also hosted the 2013 finals (that Nigeria won) after civil strife
broke out in the designated host nation, Libya, in 2011. In 2010, South Africa became the first African nation to host the FIFA World Cup – a 30 –day, 32 –nation extravaganza that was widely seen as a magnificent success. A year earlier, the nation also hosted the FIFA Confederations Cup. Egypt has hosted the continent’s top football house party three times previously, including hosting and winning the 1986 and 2006 finals. The country also hosted the FIFA U17 World Cup finals in 1997 and the FIFA U20 World Cup finals in 2009.

Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr to earn N20m salary The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has rewarded Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr with an improved salary after his contract renewal. This much was disclosed to newsmen by the president of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Mr. Amaju Pinnick. The CAF first vice president stated that the German coach’s contract was recently renewed and part of the clause in the new contract was $10,000 addition to his salary. “We recently renewed the contract of Rohr and in the new contract is an addition of $10,000 to his monthly salary. His new salary is $55,000 (about N2 million),” Pinnick said. The NFF boss also dispelled reports that the Super Eagles coach is being owed backlog of salaries, stressing that the federation has been up to date with the coach’s salary. “We’re not owing Rohr or any of the national team coaches,” Pinnick said frankly.

Paul Aigbogun: No training tour for Flying Eagles Flying Eagles head coach Paul Aigbogun has stressed that they are looking at training the invited players to knock them into shape before embarking on some friendly matches ahead of their trip to Niger Republic for the CAF U17 Africa Cup of Nations starting from February 2 to 17. Aigbogun noted that with the fact that they already have a crowded programme, it will be difficult for them to embark on a training tour as they have about 30 players to work with before trimming them down to the required number for the championship in Niger Republic. He said he would have loved to have as many Nigerian players as possible that are eligible to play in his squad but that some foreign-based players they pencilled down are having the challenge of not getting the nod of their teams
