The artists’ residence provides a framework for internationally renowned contemporary artists to develop their work. The kunstfestival shining arts festival illuminates Bad Gastein with a sparkling array of light installations and contemporary art. Finally, the summer jazz in the city concert series fills balmy summer evenings with grooving and swinging sounds. Throughout the summer from June to October, exhibitions, installations, open ateliers, creative workshops, concerts, summer theatre events and countless other artistic and cultural activities add a fresh and lively note to the resort of Bad Gastein. Schroffe Felsformationen, reißende Gebirgsflüsse und extreme Wetterlage – seit jeher übt die Bergwelt eine besondere Faszination auf den Menschen und die Künstler unter ihnen aus. Mit der neu gegründeten kunstresidenz möchte Bad Gastein der Künstlerseele Raum für Inspiration und Kraft für intensives Schaffen geben. Während des Sommers arbeiten Künstler aus dem In- und Ausland im Rahmen von sommer.frische.kunst. in der kunst residenz im historischen Wasserkraftwerk von Bad Gastein. Unter dem Motto „Tradition ist Leben“ werden alte Geschichten von Bad Gastein wiederbelebt und durch das Schaffen der jungen Kreativen zeitgemäß übersetzt. Das internationale Stipendiatenprogramm bietet aufstrebenden, jungen Künstlerinnen und Künstlern Freiräume für ihr kreatives Wirken durch kostenfreies Wohnen in den kooperierenden Hotels und Atelierräume im Kraftwerk. Den Ausklang des Kunstsommers bildet das Abschlusswochenende der kunst residenz vom 19. bis 21. August 2011. Rauschend feiert die Vernissage am Freitag, den 19. August, die Stipendiaten der kunstresidenz 2011 und lädt Kunstliebhaber und Kunstinteressierte zu einem Fest für die Kunst. Initiatorin der kunstresidenz ist Andrea von Goetz. Rugged cliff formations, torrential mountain rivers and extreme weather situations – the alpine world has always evoked a particular fascination among both man and artists. With its newly founded artists’ residence Bad Gastein aims to provide the artistic soul with scope for inspiration and strength for intense creativity. During the summer artists from Austria and abroad work at the artists’ residence in Bad Gastein’s historic hydroelectric power plant as part of the sommer.frische.kunst project. Under the motto “Tradition is life” historic events from Bad Gastein are brought back to life and portrayed in a contemporary modern style through the creativity of the young artists. The international scholarship programme offers aspiring young artists scope for the development of their creative talent by providing free accommodation at the participating hotels and workshops at the former power plant. The artistic summer will conclude with the final weekend at the artists’ residence from 19 to 21 August 2011 when there will be a private viewing event on Friday 19 August to celebrate the achievements of the 2011 art ists’ residence scholarship holders and stage a festival of art for art lovers. The initiator of the artists’ residence is Andrea von Goetz.

HENRIK EIBEN, born in 1975 in Tokyo, studied at the Academy of Visual Arts and Design in Enschede, Netherlands, the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, USA, and under Silvia Bächli at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe. A focal point of his work comprises wall pieces made of a wide range of materials designed to adopt the ideas of minimalism. At present Henrik Eiben’s creativity in this area is branching out towards more sculptural work and the exploration of a diverse range of media, genres and materials such as glass, polyurethane, metal and hightech materials. MIRKO REISSER (DAIM), 1971 in Lüneburg geboren, wurde bereits 1989 mit ersten Graffiti-Arbeiten bekannt. DAIM arbeitet mit der Konstruktion und Dekonstruktion eines Wortes. In einem DAIM-Graffiti entdeckt der Betrachter das Standbild einer Wortformation, die im Begriff ist, sich zu verändern, dem Zugriff zu entziehen, und die, auf der Flucht, sich nicht greifen lassen, sondern frei und souverän bleiben will. Aktuelle Ausstellungen sind „meanwhile in deepest east anglia“, Street Art in der Von der Heydt-Kunsthalle Wuppertal, und die Urban Art Ausstellung, Werke aus der Sammlung Reinking, Weserburg, im Museum für moderne Kunst, Bremen. MIRKO REISSER (DAIM), born in 1971 in Lüneburg, already became known with his first graffiti works in 1989. DAIM works with the construction and deconstruction of a word. In a DAIM graffiti work the observer discovers the freezed image of a word formation that is in the process of changing, denying access, escaping the demands of tangibility and in doing so remaining free and sovereign. Current exhibitions are Street art “meanwhile in deepest East Anglia” at Von der Heydt-Kunsthalle, Wuppertal and the “Urban Art - Werke aus der Sammlung Reinking” exhibition at the Weserburg, Bremen’s museum of modern art.

PHILIPP FÜRHOFER, geboren 1982, studierte an der UdK Berlin bei Prof. Jürgen Diehl. Als Maler bevorzugt er transparente Untergründe wie Acrylglas und setzt virtuos Licht und Farbe ein, um den Betrachter in seine Bildwelten einzubeziehen. Philipp Fürhofer hat seine Werke bereits international in Gruppen- und Einzelausstellungen und auf Messen in Berlin und Hongkong gezeigt. Aktuell zu sehen ist seine Arbeit in einem Bühnenbild für die Oper „Eugen Onegin“, die am 14. Juni in der Nederlandse Opera, Amsterdam, unter der Regie von Stefan Herheim Premiere feierte. PHILIPP FÜRHOFER, born in 1982, studied under Prof. Jürgen Diehl at Berlin University of the Arts. As a painter he prefers transparent surfaces such as acrylic glass and deploys light and colour to include the observer in his imagery. Philipp Fürhofer has already displayed his works internationally at group and solo exhibitions and at trade fairs in Berlin and Hong Kong. Currently on display is his work on the stage design for the opera “Eugen Onegin” that was premiered on 14 June at the Nederlandse Opera in Amsterdam under the direction of Stefan Herheim. JOHANNES WEISS, geboren 1979, studierte an der UdK Berlin bei Prof. Tony Cragg. Er hat bereits an internationalen Ausstellungen und Kunstmessen u. a. in Los Angeles, Hongkong und Berlin teilgenommen. Johannes Weiß setzt sich mit den grundlegenden Fragen der Skulptur wie Statik, Farbe, Volumen und Material auseinander. Zurzeit arbeitet er an Skulpturen aus Keramik für den Außenbereich. JOHANNES WEISS, born in 1979, studied under Prof. Tony Cragg at Berlin University of the Arts. He has already participated in international exhibitions and art fairs at places including Los Angeles, Hong Kong and Berlin. Johannes Weiß deals with fundamental sculptural issues such as statics, colour, volume and material. At present he is working on ceramic sculptures for outdoor display. KYUNG-HWA CHOI-AHOI, geboren in Seoul, lebt und arbeitet in Hamburg. Nach dem Diplom an der Hochschule für Bildende Künste Hamburg bei Prof. Werner Büttner, arbeitet die Künstlerin nur noch mit Bleistift und Papier. In ihren Ausstellungen, z. B. im Hamburger Kunstverein, verschafft die Zeichnerin dem Betrachter in Form eines Tagebuchs Einblick in ihr Leben als das zentrale Thema ihrer Arbeit. Durch die Tagebuchzeichnungen dokumentiert sie nicht nur private, alltägliche Beobachtungen, sondern vermittelt auch einen fernen und nahen Blick auf die Stelle, an der sie zeitlich und örtlich war. Sie möchte durch ihre Arbeit mit dem Betrachter in einen Dialog treten. KYUNG-HWA CHOI-AHOI, born in Seoul, lives and works in Hamburg. Having studied under Prof. Werner Büttner at Hamburg University of Fine Arts, the artist works solely with pencil and paper. At her exhibitions, for instance at Hamburg Kunstverein, she provides the observer with an insight into her life as the central theme of her work in the form of a journal. The journal illustrations not only document her private everyday observations but also provide a distanced and close-up view of the place where she was from a physical and temporal perspective. She aims to use her work to enter into dialogue with the observer.

SEBASTIAN MESCHENMOSER, born in 1980 in Frankfurt am Main, started studying at the Academy of Fine Arts in Mainz in 2001. After spending a year abroad at the École nationale supérieure d’Art in Dijon he completed his diploma studies in 2006 under Klaus Vogelgesang and Anne Berning in Mainz. At his exhibitions at Kunsthaus Dresden, in Frankfurt and currently at Stadtgalerie Bern the artist illustrates the interaction and counterplay of animal/human and outside/inside in combination with light and shadows. The narrative component that has enabled him to win important awards as an author and illustrator also forms a central theme in his painting and installations. SABRINA FRITSCH, geboren 1979 in Neunkirchen, begann 2001 ihr Studium an der Akademie für Bildende Künste in Mainz und wechselte 2005 an die Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. Dort beendete sie als Meisterschülerin von Peter Doig 2008 ihr Studium mit dem Akademiebrief. Ausstellungen in New York, Düsseldorf, Hamburg sowie ein Stipendium des Kunstvereins für die Rheinlande und Westfalen folgten. Sabrina Fritsch arbeitet an der Grenze von Abstraktion und Figuration. Sie deutet an, ohne darzustellen oder zu zeigen, sodass ihre Arbeiten auf Holz, Leinwand oder Papier auf etwas latent Vorhandenes verweisen, es aber nur als Mögliches bestimmen. Im Herzen Bad Gasteins und am Fuße des Bad Gasteiner Wasserfalls befindet sich das historisch bedeutende, alte Bad Gasteiner Kraftwerk. Bei seiner Inbetriebnahme 1914 galt es als eines der ersten und zugleich größten Wasserkraftwerke im Salzburger Land. Ursprünglich gebaut, um die Mechanisierung des Bad Gasteiner Goldbergbaus voranzutreiben, versorgte es bald das gesamte Tal mit Strom. Heute ist das alte Kraftwerk nicht nur ein Industriedenkmal, sondern zugleich ein Zeitzeuge der Geschichte der Elektrizitätsgewinnung. Besucher des Kraftwerkes beeindruckt nicht nur die 15 Meter lange Schalttafel aus Marmor, beleuchtet wird auch die „elektrische“ Tradition des Kurortes, die bis in das Jahr 1886 zurückreicht. Bad Gastein war zu dieser Zeit der erste elektrisch beleuchtete Kurort in Europa. Das erste, 1886 erbaute Kraftwerk mit Thermalwasserhebemaschine gehörte noch Kaiser Franz Joseph I. Nach seiner Stilllegung im Jahre 2004 kaufte die Gemeinde das Kraftwerk zurück und stellte das Gebäude unter Denkmalschutz. Heute überlässt Bad Gastein die Räumlichkeiten einem neuen Verwendungszweck – der Kunst. Mit der kunstresidenz zieht frisches Leben in die historischen Gemäuer. So schlägt Bad Gastein auch an diesem Ort eine Brücke von der Tradition zur Moderne. The historically significant former Bad Gastein power plant is located in the heart of Bad Gastein at the foot of the town’s waterfall. When put into operation in 1914 it was both one of the first and largest hydroelectric power plants in the Salzburger Land region. Originally constructed to advance the mechanisation of gold mining in Bad Gastein, it was soon supplying the entire valley with electricity. Today the former power plant is not just an industrial monument but also serves as a witness to the history of electrical power generation. Visitors of the power plant are not only impressed by the fifteen metre-long marble switchboard but the ‘electrical’ tradition of the spa resort dating back to 1886 is also illuminated. At that time Bad Gastein was the first electrically lit spa town in Europe. The first power plant with a thermal water lifting machine built in 1886 belonged to Emperor Franz Joseph I. After it was closed in 2004 the town council bought back the power plant and declared the building a historic monument. Today Bad Gastein allows the premises to be used for a new purpose – art. The artists’ residence serves to breathe new life into the historic walls. Bad Gastein therefore also bridges the gap between tradition and modernity here as well. Bad Gastein leuchtet. Inmitten der imposanten Bergwelt, der mondänen Architektur des Art déco und der futuristischen Bauwerke der 60er- und 70er-Jahre, überstrahlt das kunstfestival 2011 unter dem Motto shining die glanzvolle Vergangenheit und Gegenwart der alpinen Metropole. Bad Gastein lockt den internationalen Kunstbetrieb, Kunstkenner und Künstler mit dem kunstfestival schon zum zweiten Mal in die österreichischen Alpen. Vom 27. August bis 18. September 2011 erleuchtet eine großräumige Lichtinstallation von Tomas Hoke den historischen Ortskern. Eigens vom Künstler für Bad Gastein entwickelt, zeigt die Installation, wie verbindend Kunst im öffentlichen Raum wirken kann. Zeitgleich werden das industriehistorisch einzigartige Wasserkraftwerk und der angrenzende Thermalquellpark Schauplatz für ein Ausstellungsprojekt mit dem Titel „hard & soft“ sein. International tätige Künstlerinnen und Künstler präsentieren sich hier einem kunstinteressierten Publikum. Gudrun Kampl, bekannt für ihre mit Stoffen und Samt gestalteten Ausstellungsräume, und Tomas Hoke zeigen aktuelle Objektkunst aus Plüsch und Metall. Michael Kienzer, einer der renommiertesten Vertreter der zeitgenössischen Skulptur aus Österreich, beweist einmal mehr, wie sich Räume durch subtile, künstlerische Interventionen verändern lassen. Am 27. August werden die Lichtinstallation von Tomas Hoke und die Ausstellung im Wasserkraftwerk mit einer großen kunstfestival shining-Vernissage und Party eröffnet. Das kunstfestival shining wird nach dem erfolgreichen Auftakt des Festivals 2010 auch 2011 wieder von Ulli Sturm kuratiert. Bad Gastein shines. At the heart of the imposing alpine world, the sophisticated art deco architecture and the futuristic buildings of the sixties and seventies, the 2011 art festival under the motto shining outshines the splendid past and present of the alpine city. Bad Gastein is for the second time attracting the international art business, art connoisseurs and artists to the Austrian Alps with its kunstfestival. From 27 August to 18 September 2011 a large-scale light installation by Tomas Hoke will illuminate the historic old town. Especially designed by the artist for Bad Gastein, the installation will demonstrate how communicative art can appear in the public domain. At the same time the hydroelectric power plant that is unique in terms of industrial heritage and the adjoining thermal springs park will provide the setting for an exhibition project entitled “hard & soft”. Internationally active artists will present themselves here to an audience of art enthusiasts. Gudrun Kampl, known for her exhibition rooms created with materials and velvet, and Tomas Hoke will display contemporary object art consisting of plush and metal. Michael Kienzer, one of the most renowned Austrian representatives of contemporary sculpture, will demonstrate once again how rooms can be changed by means of subtle artistic intervention. On 27 August the light installation by Tomas Hoke and the exhibition in the hydroelectric power plant will be opened with a big kunstfestival shining preview event and party. Following the successful kick-off to the festival in 2010, kunstfestival shining is once again being curated by Ulli Sturm in 2011.

GUDRUN KAMPL, born in 1964 in Klagenfurt, lives and works in Vienna and studied experimental design in painting, graphics and animated cartoons under Maria Lassnig at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna. The internationally acclaimed artist has works in a large number of art galleries, the Belvedere in Vienna and the Museum of Modern Art in Salzburg. Kampl also works as a production and costume designer and as a filmmaker. Her stitched, embroidered or painted pictures and objects can be described as the materialisation of events, conditions and emotions; they are materialised dreams. Red velvet is her preferred material for this. TOMAS HOKE,1958 in Wien geboren, lebt heute als bildender Künstler und Ausstellungskurator in Wien und Saager, Kärnten. Studium in der Meisterklasse Metall bei Carl Auböck an der Universität für Angewandte Kunst in Wien. Seine Arbeiten wurden in zahlreichen Einzelausstellungen und Beteiligungen im In- und Ausland, zuletzt in Japan, gezeigt. Er realisierte eine Reihe von Projekten zu Kunst im öffentlichen Raum und Kunst am Bau, wo bei es sich zunehmend um technisch komplexe Lichtinstallationen handelt. Werke des Künstlers befinden sich in u. a. im Museum für Angewandte Kunst, Wien MAK, im Bundesministerium für Unterricht und Kunst, der Österreichischen Galerie im Belvedere Wien und diversen Landesmuseen. TOMAS HOKE, born in 1958 in Vienna, today lives as a visual artist and exhibition curator in Vienna and Saager, Carinthia. He studied in the metal master class under Carl Auböck at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna. His works have been shown at a large number of solo and group exhibitions at home and abroad, most recently in Japan. He has implemented a series of projects on art in the public domain and structural art, with an increased focus on technically complex light installations. The artist’s works can be found among other things at the Museum of Applied Arts in Vienna (MAK), the Federal Ministry for Education, Arts and Culture, the Austrian Gallery at the Belvedere in Vienna and various state museums.

MICHAEL KIENZER, geboren 1962 in Steyr. Studium der Bildhauerei an der Kunstgewerbeschule Graz. Otto-Mauer-Preis. Gastprofessur an der Universität für Angewandte Kunst, Wien. Einzelausstellungen u. a. in der Landesgalerie Linz, im Museum für Angewandte Kunst und MUMOK in Wien, im Kunsthaus Graz. Zurzeit wird seine Arbeit bei „Glassstress 2011“ anl. der Biennale in Venedig präsentiert. Kienzer arbeitet im Wesentlichen mit Skulpturen, er verwendet dabei Materialien wie Aluminium, Textiles, Gummi und Glas. Seine künstlerische Praxis umfasst aber auch Zeichnung und Video. Er hinterfragt – in Erweiterung des Skulpturenbegriffs – mit Objekten und Installationen die Wahrnehmung von Raum, Zeit und Form. Funktion und Bedeutung von Dingen und Alltagsgegenständen werden überhöht oder in ihr Gegenteil verkehrt. Deep below the historic centre of Bad Gastein lie the thermal springs that have made the town so famous. The source area of the thermal springs comprises a plot of land measuring 300,000 square metres on both sides of Bad Gastein waterfall.
