Als Schwedische Marke steht bei uns seit jeher der Mensch im Zentrum. Unsere Autos sind daher nicht nur sicher, sondern stehen heute auch für eine neue, aufregende skandinavische Formensprache.

Im Frühjahr 2011 liessen wir einen Volvo S60 unbefleckt weiss vor einer weissen Leinwand im Zürcher Hauptbahnhof vorfahren.

Seine Linien sind dynamisch und energiegeladen.

Was geschieht, fragten wir uns, wenn der S60 für die besten Schweizer Street-Artists zur Leinwand und Inspirationsquelle wird?

Dieser Gedanke war der Startschuss zu einer ungewöhnlichen Kunstaktion – zur „Volvo Art Session“.

Wir wollten das Kunst-Happening nicht in einem geschlossenen Raum stattfinden lassen, sondern in der Öffentlichkeit. Und es sollten keine einzelnen, isolierten Kunstobjekte daraus entstehen, sondern ein lebendiges Kunstwerk, das von seiner Vergänglichkeit lebt – festgehalten nur von einer Kamera.

Es war keine alltägliche Aktion für uns. Und zugegeben, es kostete uns ein gutes Stück Mut, ein Auto als Objekt in Künstlerhände zu geben. Umso mehr waren wir beeindruckt von der Kreativität und der Qualität der entstandenen Werke.

Wir sind stolz darauf, dass wir für die „Volvo Art Session“ nicht nur die besten aktuellen Schweizer StreetArtists gewinnen konnten, sondern als Dokumentator der Aktion auch den international renommierten Schweizer Photografen Michel Comte.

In diesem Buch finden Sie die grosse künstlerische Energie wieder, die sich bei der „Volvo Art Session“ während fünf aussergewöhnlichen Tagen im HB Zürich aufbaute.

En tant que marque suédoise, nous plaçons depuis toujours l'être humain au cœur de nos préoccupations. C'est pourquoi nos voitures ne sont pas seulement sûres, mais incarnent aujourd'hui aussi une nouvelle forme d'expression scandinave palpitante.

Au printemps 2011, nous avons placé une Volvo S60 d’un blanc immaculé devant une toile blanche en gare centrale de Zurich.

Ses lignes sont dynamiques et pleines d’énergie.

Nous nous sommes alors demandé ce qu’il se passerait si la S60 devenait une toile et une source d’inspiration pour les meilleurs artistes « Street Art » de Suisse.

C’est ainsi qu’est née l’idée d’une manifestation artistique hors du commun, la « Volvo Art Session ».

Nous ne voulions pas organiser ce happening artistique dans un cercle privé, mais le tenir en public.

Et nous ne voulions pas qu’il en ressorte des objets d’art isolés, mais une œuvre d’art vivante, profondément imprégnée de son caractère éphémère et immortalisée uniquement par un appareil photo.

Ce projet était tout à fait extraordinaire pour nous.

Et pour être francs, il faut admettre qu’il nous a fallu une bonne dose de courage pour remettre une voiture aux mains des artistes. Nous avons été d’autant plus impressionnés par la créativité et la qualité des œuvres qui ont vu le jour.

Nous sommes fiers d’avoir su attirer à la « Volvo Art Session » non seulement les artistes « Street Art » les plus renommés de Suisse à l’heure actuelle, mais aussi le photographe suisse mondialement célèbre Michel Comte afin qu'immortalise la manifestation.

Vous retrouverez dans ce livre l’immense énergie créatrice qui s’est fait jour au cours des cinq journées exceptionnelles de la « Volvo Art Session » en gare centrale de Zurich.

As a Swedish brand, we have always made people our business. That’s why our cars are more than just safe. Today, they have come to symbolise new and exciting Scandinavian design.

In spring 2011, we parked an immaculately white Volvo S60 in front of a white backdrop at Zurich main station.

Its contours are dynamic and loaded with energy.

We asked ourselves what would happen if the S60 became a canvas and source of inspiration for Switzerland’s best street artists.

This thought marked the start of a remarkable art event – the “Volvo Art Session”.

We didn’t want to stage this art happening in a closed room, but rather in the public eye. And the goal was not to create single, isolated works of art, but instead, a living work in progress which thrives on its own transience – captured only by a camera.

This was no everyday event for us. And we must admit that it took considerable courage to hand a car over to artists as an object. This made the quality and creativity that filled these works even more impressive.

We are proud that Switzerland’s best street artists participated in the “Volvo Art Session”. And what’s more, it was our honour to have the proceedings documented by internationally renowned Swiss photographer Michel Comte.

This book reflects the great artistic energy generated throughout the five remarkable days of the “Volvo Art Session” at Zurich main station.

C-LINE Céline Quadri aka C-Line ist eine 28-jährige Künstlerin, die zwischen Zürich und Berlin pendelt. Sie hat ihre Werke schon in verschiedenen Gallerien, Design-Stores und Ausstellungen in der Schweiz und in Deutschland präsentiert. Sie hat den “Passion is Fashion Contest” von Pussy Deluxe im Jahr 2006 gewonnen und ist auch für verschiedene T-shirts von Carhartt der Spring/Summer collection 2007 und 2008 verantwortlich.

Ihre Bilder zeigen Kreise und Figuren mit starken Farben, die sie über Leinwände zieht und dabei ihre klaren Linien immer wieder zusammenfügen lässt. Sie wirft mit ihrer spannenden und eigenen Malart einen anderen Blick auf den menschlichen Körper und die Tierwelt.

Elle a déjà présenté ses œuvres dans différentes galeries, « Design-Stores » et expositions en Suisse et en Allemagne. Elle a gagné en 2006 le « Passion is Fashion Contest » de Pussy Deluxe ; elle a également été responsable de la création de différents t-shirts pour les collections printemps-été 2007 et 2008 de Carhartt.

Ses tableaux sont composés de cercles et de personnages fortement colorés qu'elle étire à travers la toile pour former des lignes claires et précises. Avec son style de peinture personnel et captivant, elle jette un autre regard sur le corps humain et le monde des animaux.

BLACKYARD BlackYard ist eine Gruppe von vier Grafikern und Illustratoren, die in ihren besten Jahren stehen und ihre Fähigkeiten auf den verschiedensten Wegen erworben haben. Mitte 2008 schlossen sie sich zu einem Kollektiv zusammen und liessen sich im malerischen Berner Quartier Matte nieder, im August 2009 folgte die Firmengründung. Ihre Königsdisziplinen sind Illustration und Print-Grafik, vorwiegend im Kultur- und KMUBereich, hin und wieder auch für Grossfirmen. Im Fokus steht dabei stets das Handwerk: BlackYard entwirft, zeichnet und gestaltet wo immer möglich in Handarbeit, gibt sich kernig und nach alter Schule, druckt bevorzugt mit Sieben oder Off-Set und sorgt damit schweizweit und seit neustem gar darüber hinaus für Furore.

Mi-2008, ils se sont regroupés en un collectif et installés dans la Matte, un quartier pittoresque de Berne, et c’est en août 2009 que la société a été créée. Leurs disciplines reines sont l’illustration et le graphisme print, principalement dans le domaine de la culture et des PME et, de temps en temps, aussi pour de grandes entreprises. Ce faisant, ils donnent toujours la primauté à l’artisanat : BlakkYard crée, dessine et conçoit autant que possible manuellement, se réclame de la vieille école et pratique de préférence la sérigraphie et l’offset, faisant ainsi fureur en Suisse et au-delà des frontières.

DAIM *1971 in Lüneburg / Deutschland Der technisch brillante wie formal komplexe 3-D-Style ist das Markenzeichen von DAIM. 3-D-Style bedeutet, dass der Schriftzug ohne Outlines, stattdessen mit den Licht/Schatten-Effekten der Farben selbst gestaltet wird. Die Buchstaben erhalten dadurch etwas Greifbares, etwas, das sie aus ihrer Zweidimensionalität heraus – und hinein in unsere dreidimensional erfahrbare Welt rückt. Sie suggerieren nämlich, eine Dimension weiter zu sein, als die, der sie tatsächlich angehören, sie drängen, sie streben nach mehr, wollen Teil der dynamischen Welt sein, und wie zum Trotz führen sie uns ihr übermächtiges Können vor, indem sie sich in einem farblichen Fantasieraum verschlingen, verschachteln, umlegen, zerhackt aneinanderschmiegen, mit Pfeilsystemen (die aus dem Bild hinaus zurück in die "wirkliche" Welt weisen) verbinden, indem sie in die Tiefe des Raumes hinein- und aus ihr wieder hinausmorphen, sich zwischen zwei Fluchtpunkte spannen, indem sie zerfallen, zersprengen, zerfetzen, zersplittern, ja regelrecht zerspritzen – bedeuten die vier Buchstaben D A I M plötzlich eine Abweichung vom normalen, mit strengen Konventionen ausgestatteten Schriftbild, welches sich ja doch eher – den Gesetzmässigkeiten der guten Lesbarkeit folgend – auf die ruhenden Gleichförmigkeiten seiner Formen stützt.

Style 3D signifie que l’écriture est formée non pas par des lignes de contour, mais par les effets de lumière et d’ombre des couleurs. On a presque l’impression qu’on peut toucher les lettres, comme si elles délaissaient leur dimension bidimensionnelle pour entrer dans notre monde tridimensionnel et perceptible. 3D style means that the lettering is created using the light and shade effects of colours rather than outlines.

This gives the letters something palpable, something which propels them out of their two-dimensionality and into a world we experience in 3D. This approach seems to give the letters an extra dimension. They push themselves forward, trying to be more, wanting to be part of the dynamic world and yet demonstrating to us their overwhelming power as they are engulfed, interwoven, divided, hacked and mixed up together in a fantasy world of colour, linked with a system of arrows (pointing out of the picture back into the “real” world), morphing into the depth of the space and back out of it, stretching between two vanishing points, collapsing, bursting, shredding, fragmenting and even splattering – all of which means that the four letters D A I M suddenly represent an anomaly in the context of strict typeface conventions, which, to ensure the legibility, are based on a static uniformity of each letter’s contours.

SUKI BAMBOO Mit bürgerlichem Namen als Bianca Litscher geboren, legte sie sich 1989 den Namen «Zora» zu, um fortan als Graffitiartist und MC zu malen und zu rappen. Seitdem hat sie konsequent ihren Stil weiterentwickelt und sich auf Illustrationen spezialisiert. Als Zora war sie Teil der internationalen Graffiticrew „Stick up Kids“ und hat sich zudem auch im musikalischen Bereich als Rapperin mit der Combo „Wrecked Mob“ einen Namen gemacht. Von 1993-2002 veröffentlichte sie insgesamt 13 Tonträger, darunter auch eine Kooperation mit Thomas D von den Fantastischen 4. 2003 kam ihr in Hamburg die Idee zu „Suki Bamboo“, was für freies Denken und Freude an der Kreation steht, sowie der immer bestehenden Möglichkeit, Träume Realität werden zu lassen. Inspiration ist überall. Die Umwelt beobachten, Einflüsse wahrnehmen, die Essenz der Dinge erkennen, aufs Wesentliche reduzieren, die inneren Bilder die daraus entstehen kommunizieren und in eine ästhetische Form bringen.

Und alles was man sich vorstellen kann, lässt sich realisieren. „Was auch immer ich bildlich erschaffe, meine Absicht liegt darin, dem Betrachter ein nachhaltig gutes, positives Gefühl zu schenken und manchmal auch Wissen oder Erfahrungen weiterzugeben, welche schwer in Worte zu fassen sind.“ Vision: I have a Dream!

En 2003, à Hambourg, elle a eu l’idée de « Suki Bamboo », qui représente un esprit libre et plein de joie, afin de donner, toujours et encore, la possibilité aux rêves de devenir réalité. L’inspiration est partout. Observer son environnement, percevoir les influences, reconnaître l’essence des choses et les réduire à l’essentiel, communiquer les images intérieures qui en découlent et les reproduire esthétiquement. WES21 WES21, alias Remo Lienhard wurde im Mai 1989 geboren und lebt in Biel. Nach dem Abschluss als Grafiker an der Schule für Gestaltung in Biel 2009, arbeitet er als freischaffender Illustrator und Gestalter. Seit 2001 widmet er sich der Malerei, arbeitet an grossformatigen Wandbildern, malt Leinwandformate und tüftelt zur Abwechslung an 3D Skulpturen. Das Weitertreiben eigener Bildwelten und Techniken steht im Mittelpunkt seiner Tätigkeit und prägt seine Arbeit an der Schnittstelle von Grafik und zeitgenössischer Kunst.

WES21, alias Remo Lienhard, est né en mai 1989 et vit à Bienne. Après avoir obtenu son diplôme de graphiste à l’Ecole d’Arts Visuels de Bienne en 2009, il a travaillé en tant qu'illustrateur et créateur indépendant. Depuis 2001, il se consacre à la peinture, travaille à des fresques grand format, peint sur différents formats de toiles et « bidouille », pour changer, des sculptures en 3D. La création d'univers picturaux et de techniques propres se trouve au cœur de son activité et caractérise son travail à la frontière du graphisme et de l'art contemporain.

WES21, alias Remo Lienhard, was born in May 1989 and lives in Biel. After graduating as a graphic designer from the Design School in Biel in 2009, he started work as a freelance illustrator and designer. He has devoted himself to painting since 2001, working on large-scale murals, painting canvases and, for the sake of variety, creating 3D sculptures. WES21 is keen to develop the visual vocabulary and techniques that characterise his work, which investigates the convergence of graphic design and contemporary art.

Nevercrew – Rosa Farbe tropft von oben herab und jeder versucht die Stadt mit kleinen Schirmen zu schützen, obwohl alles zur Farbigkeit bestimmt zu sein scheint.

In diesem Spiel der Grössen und Proportionen stellt sich die Frage: Wer ist der Herrscher über die Farben?

Nevercrew – De l'encre rose goutte et tout le monde essaie de protéger la ville à l'aide de petits parapluies, bien que tout semble destiné à être coloré. Dans ce jeu de tailles et de proportions, qui est le maître de l'encre ?

Nevercrew – Pink ink drips from the skies, and everyone tries to protect the city using little umbrellas, even though everything seems to be fated to be colourful. In this game of sizes and proportions, who’s the inkmaster?

Pius Portmann – Mein Ziel war es mit einem Frauengesicht zu starten, welches sich langsam in ein Männergesicht verwandelt.

Ich arbeitete nicht auf ein Endresultat hin sondern wollte Bilder liefern für den animierten Film.

Pius Portmann – Mon objectif était de commencer par un visage féminin qui se transforme lentement en un visage masculin.

Je ne travaillais pas sur un résultat final, mais plutôt dans le but de livrer des images pour le film animé.

Pius Portmann – My goal was to begin with a woman’s face which slowly transforms into a man’s face. I didn’t intend to create a finished product, but rather images for the animated film.
