She calls herself “The Frozen Texan” on Instagram, and it describes her background perfectly. “Texas girl falls in love with North Dakota farmer. Said Texas girl moves to the frozen tundra not knowing what in the world she was getting into. Love overcomes the lack of feeling in her fingers and she decides to stay.” Calling Fairmount, ND her home base, Sarah Hardie made a name for herself as Sarah Hardie Photography. This month, she launches her rebrand as For Love and Jones, and we sat down to get to know the Texas girl behind the lens. You recently went through a rebrand and changed your company name from Sarah Hardie Photography to For Love and Jones. Can you explain the inspiration for this change? SARAH HARDIE: I went through a bit of an identity crisis with my photography business last year. I wanted to figure out why I was doing what I was doing and have my brand reflect that to my clients the best that I possibly could. What I realized was that the photos that have impacted me the most were the photos in my grandmother’s home. She spent most of her life in west Texas on a cattle ranch and has photo after photo of the house they lived in, which has since burned to the ground, with my mom playing in the yard with her siblings, their wedding day... She has a photo family tree in her home of several generations passed down through her great-grandchildren. The sense of connection to the love intertwined throughout the family and the heritage I am a part of is forever impressed on my mind because of these 12
images. That is what I want to give to people. Not just photos of a wedding day, but of the beginning of a life-long commitment. Not just a family photo, but a connection to the past and the future - a legacy. My grandmother’s maiden name is Alice Jones. Why do I do what I do? For Love and Jones. When did you first fall in love with photography? SH: I remember always having a camera in hand as a child, but the first time I was really drawn to the artistic side of it was over a summer I spent studying abroad in Italy during my college years. I am a musician and a wannabe writer, and as such, have always been drawn to art in many forms, but had not been really inspired to create my own art through photography until this trip. I only had a small point-and-shoot, but I was so excited to share my experiences with my friends and family back home that I spent a lot of time thinking about how to intentionally create images that would
make people feel as if they had been there and expressed the beauty and culture I was seeing. Over that summer was the first time I had the thought that photos were representative of chapters in my life and every one could tell an incredibly unique story. How would you describe your “style” to readers? SH: I think that, like everything, my style has been evolving over the past few years into what it is today, and I am sure it will continue to do so. But the place I am in at this moment is one that is focused on emotion. I want people to not only look at a beautiful photo, but feel something as well, to connect with the person or place they are seeing. Some might call my style moody, and with that I could agree. But the phrase that keeps coming back to me is that I make photographs of a humankind.

Sarah is a classically trained pianist and has been playing since she was 7 years old. She once owned a pet snake named Isabelle. She went to college for English Literature, but is completely selftaught in photography.
— SARAH HARDIE What is your favorite part about your job? SH: I absolutely love meeting the people I photograph, learning about who they are, and hearing their unique stories. I am – like a lot of artsy types – a bit of an introvert who is quite satisfied to sit at home with a book a lot of the time. But photography takes me out of my own world into the lives of others in a very unique and meaningful way. It is a challenge to me to give people images that make them say that it 'brings them back to the way they felt at that time' when they look at them or that truly capture the person they know. I have received feedback such as ‘the photos made me feel like I was there all over again’ or ‘how did you get him to smile like that? It’s so him!’, or ‘we just felt so relaxed and like ourselves during the photo shoot.’ These are the things that put a huge smile on my face and get me excited about every single moment. It seems like your images really tell the story of the moment and of the people in them. How do you get to know your clients and capture those feelings and emotions with the lens? SH: First of all, I ask questions. Knowing details about a couple, how they met, what their dreams are, where they grew up, helps me to genuinely express who they are. I honestly believe that my best work comes through connection. I also do my best to help them relax and be themselves. My absolute favorite thing to ask couples to do during a shoot is to whisper their favorite breakfast food to each other in their sexiest voice. This. Is. Hilarious. I am usually laughing so hard that I can barely take the picture. I am also really aware of the subtleties and the details. I love pictures of hands and strands of hair blowing in the wind and eyelashes. It is the small things that make us unique. Just looking through your work, it looks like you take photography outside of clients and really capture your family and experiences. SH: Going back to the photographs as a story analogy, I want my family to know me and remember their past through the images I take. I think often about legacy and what I am leaving my children. I truly feel a responsibility to express their heritage and past to them. If I were to die tomorrow, what would they have to remember me by? This is also why I make it a priority to get photos taken of us as a family (so I am actually in the photos and not just behind the camera) where we are simply living and loving each other in and around our home. We live on a farm in the country and the photos they have of their growing up years will only augment and enrich their memories. Along with that, you travel often for a good cause. What type of trips have you taken and what inspired you? SH: I have a deep connection to my faith and know without a doubt that any gifts or talents I may have were given to me by God for a purpose beyond myself. Josh (my husband) is a farmer, and we have had the opportunity
to travel often and explore what that means and how we can actually put this into practice. Over the past few years we have started an educational community farm in Mozambique, and stemming from that, a charitable project called ‘The Garden Well’ (thegardenwell.com), where we travel several times a year to put in wells and do small scale garden irrigation training. Another future endeavor for myself is documenting adoption stories. I have several friends who have adopted children near and far and their stories are so incredibly beautiful; they need to be shared with the world. Being able to use the knowledge we have to help those with the greatest need has brought us more joy than we ever thought possible. We saw you took images of people in other countries that might not have had their photo taken often, if ever. Can you talk about that? SH: It is not often that some realization completely revolutionizes the way you see the world, but my first trip to Mozambique did just that. I realized quite quickly that the people were absolutely ecstatic to have their photo taken and to look at it on the back of the camera. Most of these people don’t even own a mirror, much less a smart phone with one billion selfies. It is such a way of life for us with social media and a camera on every person that the reality of this really hit me. I cannot fathom not having photos of my kids as they are growing up, not knowing what I looked like as a child, or showing photos of my grandparents to future generations that never had the chance to meet them. I have since started printing out some of these photos and returning them to the people in them. It is a seemingly small thing, but one that has impacted me tremendously. What are some of your favorite wedding trends going on this year? SH: I have always been one for bucking tradition if you will, so I am loving the sense of freedom of individual expression that I have seen lately. You want to wear a blue dress? Rock it! Get married on a cliff by the sea with no one but your love? I’ll follow you there! Have your wedding guests to your backyard and sit in a circle around you while you say your handwritten vows? I’m your photographer! What has been one of your favorite memories capturing a moment for a couple? SH: I love it when the bride and groom write letters to each other before the ceremony and read them before they see each other. It inevitably brings them to tears and is such a genuine, emotional moment. Another thing that comes to mind is one bride whose mother passed away not long after the wedding, and the photos I took were some of the last ones they had together. I was so thankful I was able to preserve those memories for them.

Q: When I look up wedding inspiration, I see wedding favors. Are we expected to give favors to guests, even if we're on a tight budget? A: Even if you don’t have a tight budget, you are not expected to give favors. If you do choose to give favors, what we have found in the past 23 years is that edible favors are great, and some personalized favors have also been popular, like koozies. These definitely get used, while other favors tend to get left on the table.
Q: If I'm not close with my father, can I have someone else walk me down the aisle? If so, what type of person is okay to have walk me down? A: It is your day and you may choose who you would like to have walk you down the aisle. It may be a great time to reunite with your father. However, we have seen children, moms, and grandpas walk them down the aisle. We have had a dad walk the bride halfway down the aisle and then the grandpa walks the bride to the altar. Also, one wedding had three escorts divided equally along the aisle.

Q: What are the best ways to get my guests to R.S.V.P.? With technology and everything these days, it's so hard to get someone to send in a postcard. Suggestions?! A: We have found our brides prefer the traditional invitation with the R.S.V.P. and the pre-stamped envelope. This might not be the easiest, but it is the best way. Yes, it can be a challenge to get people to send in their R.S.V.P., so we suggest that you call your guests who haven’t responded at least three weeks from your date. The venue and caterer will need these numbers. Some of our couples will have a wedding website for their story and information about the day…this is great for guests!
Q: If I know someone can't make the wedding, do I still have to send an invitation? Why or why not? A: Even if you know someone can’t make your wedding, it is kind to send them an invitation. They just might surprise you and show up.

Q: Do you have to offer guests a plus-one? What can qualify a person not getting one? A: All cases are unique as far as plus-one. As a rule of thumb for the plus-one, use for most engaged guests, guests living with their significant other, and married guests.

JON + KATELYN BY DENISE DEPAOLO ZACH DAVIS PHOTOGRAPHY
Jon Morken and Katelyn Ostby both grew up in Fargo, but didn’t connect until December 2013, when their mothers brought them together. “My mom works at a local dentist office in Fargo,” explained Katelyn. “Jon and his family have been going there since he was little. His mom came into the office one day and started talking about Jon to my mom and her coworkers and was like, ‘I wish Jon could find a girl.’ My mom’s coworkers were like, ‘You should put Katelyn with him!’” Her mother laughed it off, but still mentioned the conversation. Katelyn’s interest was piqued enough to find Jon on Facebook, and ultimately reached out to him. The pair hit it off, but their burgeoning relationship was not without challenges. Jon was working in Williston, ND’s oil industry, which meant that the “get to know you” phase was largely a long distance affair.

“It was about a month after we started talking that we actually got to meet,” Katelyn remembered. “Immediately, my first feeling was complete comfort. I felt like I had known him for so long, and there was no other feeling to compare it to. It just felt like home.” As the months went by, the pair grew closer. They got to know each other’s families (turns out, Jon’s mom was Katelyn’s aunt’s college roommate), discovered a shared love of the outdoors, and most of all, learned that their personalities created a perfect harmony. Jon says he was drawn to Katelyn’s nurturing and selfless nature. She loves that he is kind, caring, and genuine. “He’s just very calming in his nature as well. I can get a bit stressed out and he always has that calming presence. I’m kind of a homebody and he likes to go, go, go. We just complement each other so well. Our personalities are both
bubbly and extroverted, but we each have an introverted side where we just enjoy each other’s company.” Jon agrees that they are better together. “She often helps me take time to appreciate the present, and I encourage her to experience new things.” It didn’t take long for him to realize that Katelyn was “the one.” After nine months of dating, he knew that they were meant to be, but it was no rushed engagement. “I had originally planned on proposing after one year in, but life got busy and plans pushed out another six months,” he admitted. “I wish I had proposed sooner, though. I cannot wait to marry Kate.” Even though she, too, knew she’d found her lifelong partner, Katelyn was taken by surprise when Jon popped the question in July 2015. “On one of our first dates we were

in The [Twin] Cities and went to a restaurant called WA Frost in St. Paul,” she recalled. “We had planned on going back last summer to visit some family. I did not think anything of it. We were going to go to this restaurant again. We love the Summit Avenue area near the St. Paul Cathedral. My friends were like, ‘What if he proposes?’ I didn’t think he was going to. I didn’t think about it. I wasn’t nervous. So we had dinner and then started walking down Summit Avenue toward the St. Paul Cathedral, and on the steps of the cathedral, he asked me to marry him.” Katelyn said an enthusiastic “yes” and was thrilled to find that Jon had really thought the proposal out, even arranging a photographer to capture the moment. She remembers it as a perfect weekend. Although Jon is again working far from home, this time in Alaska as a field specialist for Baker Hughes,

the couple is looking forward to October 15, 2016, when they will tie the knot in their hometown. The day will be special not only because it will signify the start of their married life, but because of all the personal touches they are adding to the event. Katelyn says the idea is to keep it intimate with a warm fall vibe, and an invite list that includes fewer than 200 family members and close friends. It is also important that they share their life as a couple with their guests. “We’ve been doing a lot of DIY projects, incorporating some of the travels we’ve done in the past,” she said. “I’m a big keepsake person, and I’ve liked to capture the moments we’ve had over the past three years. We’ll put them in a memento box or on the different tables to show our journey, show the love we’ve been able to create.” Beyond the wedding, the twosome has a lot to anticipate. Katelyn will
graduate with a master’s degree in Library and Information Sciences in December. And although they are waiting to take a full-on honeymoon, they are planning a “mini moon” in northern Minnesota shortly after the wedding. They are also excited to carry on the traditions they’ve already created as a couple, including one that began with their engagement shoot. “Last year we got ourselves a real Christmas tree - the one at our engagement shoot - and decided that we would continue to get real trees for the holiday season in the future,” said Katelyn, adding, “But we agreed that they would be much smaller than this last one, because it ended up being too tall for our living room and turned out to be a scene from National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation. That's when I dubbed Jon's new nickname to be ‘Sparky!’”

FLORA & E PH E M E RA Watching owner/principal designer of Flora & Ephemera, John Auger, in action is nothing short of mesmerizing. The passion he feels toward his work is palpable. The Dainty crew got an exclusive look at how he puts together one of his romantic centerpieces in Caitlin Nightingale Photography’s studio in St. Paul, MN, and we chatted with the designer about how – throughout his different experiences – it always has come back to flowers. When did you become interested in flowers? JOHN AUGER: I think it was sometime in elementary school. I’m not sure exactly when. I just know my grandparents loved gardening and I kind of caught that bug, too. I remember back in fourth grade wanting to put a rose garden in the yard at the house where I grew up. Did you get the rose garden? JA: I did not get the rose garden, no. That was a no-go (laughed). My sophomore year of high school I was registering for classes for junior year and saw there was a retail floral culture class – it really got my interest piqued. This was back in the '80s when you could take a vocational track

or a college track. I took mostly the college track, but I loved the class and took it a second year and learned basic principles like design, color, and how to wire and tape. Back then a lot of wedding bouquets were handwired and taped up with floral tape and that’s how you assembled it. How did you come up with Flora & Ephemera? JA: I spent a lot of time researching business names, and the first one I came up with no one could pronounce and was way too long. It’s a Latin verb – Florescere. It means ‘to begin to blossom,’ but Latin verbs also point to the subject or object, so it also means ‘I begin to blossom,’ which had a lot of meaning for me at the time. For my current name, Flora points back to flowers and Ephemera means something that doesn’t last but is still useful, or something that doesn’t last but is still beautiful.

How did you find your niche? JA: Just research online, seeing what people are working on and who is working on it – seeing styles that appeal to me. As a visual learner, it starts to stick in your head, and I started to pull my look together. While you were putting together the centerpiece, you mentioned having an influence by a Dutch painting. Can you expand on that? JA: Back in my studio art days in college, it was tradition for the particular instructor that I had to talk about paintings called vanitas paintings, which means ‘vanity.’ Those pieces of art look really gorgeous from a distance, but when you get close and study the detail, there is rotting fruit, flowers that are dying, and insects. It’s all about life and death and beauty versus mortality and to teach a lesson about that. Looking at my pieces, I realized they resembled a little of that art form.

John first studied floral design for two years in high school and worked with florals sporadically throughout this life. After a hiatus, his heart returned to flowers two years ago. He has nearly 20 events under his belt. John is a coffee connoisseur. If a deep, earthy dark roast isn't available, the espresso must be top notch for a triple Americano! One of his top-three influences for his work is nature's ebb and flow, including the seasons and how plants grow.
So you took inspiration from that without knowing it?
flowers, broccoli, brussels sprouts, grapes, asparagus, and kale that the bride grew in her garden. For the bride I mentioned earlier with the anniversary, I had pears, apples, artichoke, and grapes in the personal bouquets. It makes for a heavy bouquet (laughed).
JA: Yeah, exactly.
What is your favorite piece you’ve created?
Speaking of which, how would you describe your style?
JA: I think my favorite piece was a bouquet I did for my first styled shoot. My first two styled shoots ended up on Style Me Pretty. It blew my mind.
JA: Lush, natural and organic in form, and romantic. I don’t always use the most typical or expensive flowers like roses or dahlias, for example. I think you can get around those or have a nice mix of them with other types of flowers. I don’t do designs where things are packed into a round ball. If someone approaches me about that, I tell them I’m probably not the best fit. In your opinion, why do you think flowers are so important for weddings and events? JA: With food, wine, music…it’s all about priorities for what you want. But in terms of flowers, you’re going to have those flowers in photos for the rest of your life. You need to consider them to be pieces of art so you can take that with you. Last November was one of my past brides' 19th wedding anniversary, and she told me everyone still talks about the flowers. It’s not to take away from the couple, it’s to accent them and make the day memorable.
How far in advance should couples book their florist? JA: Six to nine months is what’s recommended. I start off with a questionnaire and ask for a set of images or a Pinterest board to see if what they’re thinking fits with my brand. If it looks good then I’ll either schedule a phone call or a consultation. Any advice to pass on with your experience? JA: My words of wisdom for a couple getting married is to let your vendors be creative. Give some input on color, a little bit about style, maybe one or two flowers – otherwise you really stifle their creativity and it leaves them feeling exhausted and disinterested in the work.
What types of unique things have you incorporated into your pieces? JA: The first wedding I ever did, I took a clay pot and rubbed plaster on it to give it an aged look, turned it on its side, and I filled it with

After dating for six years, Anna and Jeff envisioned getting married in Philadelphia or at a destination like Canada. Their plans changed when they were offered a private barn in Minnesota as a wedding venue. The couple wanted their day to be "simple and personal," and they did just that by incorporating Anna's Minnesota background with the groom's

Some of their favorite details were his and hers beers, a custom logo made up of the state of Minnesota with the Philadelphiafamous "LOVE" image, and a late-night Philly cheesesteak station. After meeting at an Iowa State tailgate in 2008, Jordan and Kyle instantly connected - as friends. Two years later, the connection continued and they began dating long distance when Jordan moved to Boston for soccer and Kyle relocated to Rome for school. Fast forward four years later, when she visited him over spring break during his internship in Colorado and Jordan proposed on the top of Aspen Mountain. The couple was ecstatic to find This Old Barn in the groom's hometown of Fairfield, IA and decorated their

reception with gorgeous blue linens mixed with wooden tables and antlers found on Kyle's family's property. The party kicked off to a romantic start as the newlyweds danced under Edison light bulbs and the stars in their "see-through" tent. The bride reminisced, "Kyle surprised me with our first dance song by Josh Abbott Band, "She's Like Texas;" a song that is close to my heart and reminds me of where I was born and raised and where my immediate family resides."

Before they knew each other, Kristin and Steve had both recently moved to Minneapolis and were not feeling confident in finding someone. "We quickly hit it off at the party once we discovered a few similarities - like the fact that we both lived in South Africa and went to rival colleges," recalled

Steve. The pair got engaged in Cartagena, Colombia on a trip to celebrate their birthdays. "Kristin was more amazed that I brought the ring to Colombia than at my marriage proposal," laughed the groom. July 9, 2016, Amanda Nix of Harrisburg, SD tied the knot with high school sweetheart Mike Visser. Following their nuptials at Sylvan Lake in the picturesque Black Hills, they embarked on a tropical getaway to the place where the Atlantic meets the Caribbean.
Where was your honeymoon? AMANDA NIX: Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. How did you decide on the location? AN: We wanted an all-inclusive, relaxing honeymoon instead of a travel-through-Europe honeymoon, and the Dominican Republic just gets a lot less rain than other places in the Caribbean and surrounding areas. We had looked into Costa Rica, Turks and Caicos, and a few other areas, but our travel agent, BJ Peterson of Bursch Travel, said they get a lot of rain in July.
the resort since we went in the summer, so we saw the same people over and over and ended up making vacation friends! It made things more fun, but also less relaxing. We 'went out' more than I anticipated! What would you have done if you'd had an extra couple of days? AN: Relaxed more. And maybe taken a chartered boat to the Caribbean side to some other beaches. Where did you stay? AN: We stayed at the Iberostar Grand Bรกvaro.
How long was your trip? Was it enough time? AN: We were there for one week. Is vacation ever long enough? I will say, it was nice and quiet at

What tips would you give other travelers heading to Punta Cana? AN: If you want to be very relaxed, spend the extra
money on the Grand Hotel. There are a few other Iberostar hotels in the same resort, but the rest have kids and they were seven thousand times busier than the Grand Bรกvaro. Also, if you book with the Iberostar Grand Bรกvaro, you can go to any of their other hotels to swim or eat or see shows, and it is included in your all-inclusive package! Although, I'm not sure why you would because, you know...kids. Also, there are several people selling excursions. Look on TripAdvisor, pick one with good reviews, and make them book you on the one you found. They try to sell you the 'best excursions,' and most people ended up covered in mud on a stalledout dune buggy. They definitely didn't get the experience shown in the brochure!

What should other travelers know about the accommodations?
What were your favorite restaurants and nightclubs?
AN: You get your very own butler! And we sort of had no idea what to do with him. But you can say things like, 'We want champagne in our room every night at 5.' Or, 'Draw us a bath at 11 p.m.' It was very fancy and a little ridiculous, and he was definitely underutilized by us.
AN: Coco Bongo is the famous nightclub there. I had already gone to the one in Cancun and we heard the 'great deal' wasn't that great and that you didn't get home till 4 a.m. So, we danced inside the pirate ship that they have in the middle of the resort. They bring a DJ down at 11 p.m. and there is a pool table. If you are into a club experience and are younger than us, Coco Bongo seemed to be the place to go.
Also, have your concierge book your dinner reservations for your entire stay on the first day of your trip. When it is busy, it can be a bit hard to get good dinner times. If you end up just wanting to go to the buffet, you don't have to go to your reservation. But it is fun to try the different restaurants! You also get free golf and a free golf cart! But ladies, you can't wear denim and you have to have a collar, so I ended up borrowing shorts from the pro shop and wearing my husband's size large polo. I looked beautiful. And sexy. What were some local attractions you saw? AN: We took the Outback Adventures-Jungle Rally Tour. It was amazing. Only seven people per vehicle. And our guide spoke all of the languages. All of them. We were all English speaking, though. We went to Macao Beach and through villages and he explained the Dominican way of life and the history of Hispaniola. We went to a traditional Dominican house and learned about how they grow, harvest and process chocolate, coffee, vanilla, cinnamon and coconut. They also owned their own ranch with animals and history boards and we got to smoke flavored cigars that they rolled there! And they have their own delicious restaurant (I recommend the fried chicken). We seemed to have the most authentic and cultural excursion of all the people we spoke to at the hotel. I highly recommend this tour.

The Japanese Hibachi Grill Hashira and their newest restaurant La Playa were our favorite restaurants at the resort. Get the Kobe beef at La Playa! Tell us about a great meal you had and/or drink you drank. What should other travelers be sure to try? AN: You have to try a shot of Mama Juana. It is a bottle filled with different types of wood and spices and then they fill it 1/4 with rum, 1/4 with honey and 1/2 sweet red wine. It is really good when you get it mixed right. However, the hotel had a tendency to just keep topping it off with rum...it made it stronger, but much less delicious. Also, when they offered me Mama Juana the first time, I definitely thought they were asking me if I wanted to get high. Maybe this article will save you from that embarrassing misunderstanding. You can bring a bottle home for your friends! The wood and spices inside last for 10 years! What was the most romantic thing about this location? AN: The sunsets. And, if you figure out your butler, you can do the whole champagne/bath thing. What was a special moment from your honeymoon that you'll never forget?
AN: They have Hobie Cat boats you can take out on your own and they were awesome! They literally give you no instructions. They just shoved us out into the ocean. I think I did great! I feel bad for people who waste good money on sailing lessons! We also got a stern talking-to by a drunk 22-yearold, because his wife was mad we set our beach bags next to their chairs 20 minutes before the pool closed. I knew we could take them, so we let it go. I guess she made him go to the pool at 6 a.m. to save chairs, even though the resort was only at 40 percent capacity. She seemed nice. (That was sarcasm. Is there a font for that, yet?) What should people visiting this location be sure to pack? AN: Sunscreen! And dollar bills to tip bartenders/ servers so that they come back to you quickly! It wasn't a big deal for us, but winter months are busier. What should they leave home? AN: They have safes there, so when we were swimming and on our excursion I left my engagement ring there and only wore my wedding band. Would you go back? What will you make a point of doing again, or for the first time? AN: We would, because we loved our resort and the people but, at the same time, there are so many places in the world to see! So, undecided. But maybe for a big anniversary to go back to ‘where it all began.’ Sum up your experience in three words. AN: Didn't get Zika. Just kidding. Honeymoons are amazing!

Everyone should have the opportunity to go to Hawaii at least once in their life, and the honeymoon is the perfect time to do it. It is a tropical paradise, yet still in the U.S. The island is so friendly, wonderful weather all year long, a great mix of relaxation and activity during the day, and very romantic. The first time I went, I vowed I would come back and share this experience with the ones I love. And since my husband and family members have all fallen in love with the island. It's our happy place and definitely a place to get away from reality. What makes it romantic? The smells of plumeria, Pacific Ocean views, laid back authentic atmosphere, and sounds of the ocean waves. Experiencing a sunset with the 116
one you love on Maui is a must. You must dine at a restaurant at sunset with a view or take in a sunset dinner cruise! Where should we stay? Andaz Maui is a newer 4.5 star property in Wailea, which is on the south side of the island. This resort offers a romantic, luxurious, yet laid back experience. Kaanapali Beach Hotel is a 3-star property on spectacular Kaanapali Beach, which is on the west side of Maui. This is for honeymooners on a budget, but still wanting to experience a beautiful oceanfront resort on one of the best beaches in the world. What is a can't-miss experience in this destination? If you are in Maui in the winter, whale-watching. But any time of year, you should take a day to experience the Road to Hana.
Where can we find an amazing meal? Mama's Fish House in Wailea. What is a local food we need to try? You must go to a luau and have kalua pig. There are luaus at many of the hotels. A favorite of mine is Drums of the Pacific at the Hyatt Regency Kaanapali Beach. For a real authentic experience, Old Lahaina Luau in Lahaina has traditional seating as an option or table and chairs. What is a great place for nightlife/ drinks? Hawaii isn't known for its nightlife, but there are some dinner shows and live music available as well as bars, but many are not open after 10 or 11 p.m. What if we want to stay active? On Maui, you can hike the crater of Haleakala which is a National Park. There is a tour option to watch the
sun rise on the top of Haleakala and bike down the mountain. Either way, sunrise and sunsets are a must to watch and a picture perfect opportunity you shouldn't miss. Where can we unwind? The spa of course! By the pool (Andaz has an adults-only pool), or drive to any beach. A rental car is highly recommended as it is easy to get around, and all of the beaches are public. Best time of year to visit? Maui has very consistent weather, so any time of year is a great time to visit. The peak times are summer, Christmas, and spring break. The low season is typically May and fall. What should we be sure to pack? Swimsuits, comfortable shoes, light jacket, sunscreen, and casual dress for dining in the evening. You don't have to bring any formal wear!

Bayfield is a beautiful little town located on the southern shore of Lake Superior. In town, you’ll find colorful Victorian mansions, elaborate gardens, and dramatic brownstone buildings lining the streets of this quaint fishing village,
providing a romantic ambiance for your entire honeymoon. Where should we stay? The Old Rittenhouse Inn. The first B&B in Wisconsin, this historic property was the summer "cottage" for a Civil War general. With seasonal events such as Red Wine Weekend, Fall Brew Weekend and Wassail Dinner Concerts, Old Rittenhouse Inn can provide the romance along with something fun to do on your vacation. What is a can't-miss experience in this destination? A trip to Madeline Island is highly recommended. It is a short ferry ride away. You can take your vehicle, bike or walk. Madeline Island is home to the village of La Pointe, which boasts shops, galleries, restaurants, a golf course, a marina, and an excellent historical museum. Where can we find an amazing meal? What is a local food we need to try? You absolutely need to try our local fish! Stop into any restaurant in town and they will serve up fresh caught-that-day Lake Superior fish! From whitefish fish tacos to pan fried trout, Bayfield’s specialty is local fish. A number of local fisheries also sell fresh fish you can buy to prepare yourselves. Smoked fish and crackers is also available, so you can enjoy that on-the-go.
What is a great place for nightlife/ drinks? The Bayfield Inn has a rooftop bar overlooking Lake Superior that is a must! They have live music during the summer, making it a great place to unwind.
For active travelers? Bayfield is an active traveler’s paradise. Kayaking the sea caves, hiking to local waterfalls, or biking around amongst the orchards and berry farms of the Bayfield Peninsula are just a few of the options we offer. If honeymooning in the winter, you can snowshoe, downhill ski, cross country ski or even go dogsledding! What if we’re ready to relax? Cozy up with a coffee or latte from local Big Water Coffee Roasters on the beach or dock overlooking Lake Superior. BY ALANA SNYDER It took our breath away when we entered Phillip and Paige Paquette’s eclectic and rustic home that sits on an impressive 12 ½ acres outside of Luverne, MN. Meeting as teenagers, the couple has been through several impressive tests, such as living separately with their parents before marriage, moving into a huge fixer-upper (that had a mice infestation), and spending their first year as husband and wife without cable or internet. We chatted with Phillip, an RN, and Paige, a sonographer, almost to the day of their one-year anniversary to see how it’s been going. How did you two meet? Paige: We met at the bowling alley. And Phil, he has a great voice. I just remember there was a song at the bowling alley and he just started belting it out. Philip: I was trying to impress her. Paige: Well, it worked! (laughed) When did you get engaged? Paige: It was April 2014 and we got married in May 2015. I actually did an internship in northern Virginia for seven months and that's where we got engaged. He came out and surprised me. We went on a hike at one of the state parks right 120
on the Potomac River and that's where it happened.
That was a slam-the-door fight, but that rarely happens. (laughed)
How has your first year been?
Speaking of, how do you handle disagreements?
Philip: It's a cakewalk. Paige: It's been easy. I hear the first year of marriage is the hardest, but I don't buy that. There were times, but... Phillip: Laundry is tough. Was that our first fight as a married couple? Paige: I asked him to do a few things over a weekend when I was on call, and he did the laundry, didn't fold a thing, and shoved them into clothes baskets. And this was summer where he wasn't working.
Paige: I think we're getting better. Phillip: She gets more hot than I do. I stay more mellow and try to stay calm and talk about it. Paige: We definitely have to talk it out before we separate. We actually don't go to bed angry; we have to figure it out before that happens.
How did you know this was the right home for you? Paige: We wanted an acreage and it seemed like our forever home. There are five bedrooms, it's the perfect distance from town, it had all the land we wanted and is close to the state park. We could make it our own, too. It's not a cookie cutter house. What was the process like moving in together?

Paige: It's definitely different, but not as different as I thought it would be. We had never lived together, so I expected it to be so different, but it just felt so natural. There are some things, like I knew a lot of things about him before we lived together, but I didn't realize he brushes his teeth in the shower - that's kind of weird. Phillip: It just feels so good, though, just being us rather than always having family around. We were getting ready to move out and planning a wedding, so everything turned into a big, serious discussion. Paige: There was a lot of high anxiety. What was a highlight of your wedding for you both? Paige: We had an amazing groom's dinner, besides the weather. It

was just really good company. After grilling out, family went to his parents' house for a bon fire, which was nice, and then we brought some of our friends and wedding party to our house completely empty before we moved in. It was a great bonding experience. How was moving in together and combining things? Paige: We really started with nothing. Neither of us had furniture because we lived with our parents. Everything you see besides the sofas are either a gift or a hand-me-down. Our style is very rustic and eclectic. We pretty much just grab what we can. I'd say we're more traditional with a little country feel.

after the wedding, so that gave us time to get most of our gifts open and put away in our house - mostly all kitchen stuff. We haven't had to buy a single thing for our kitchen. And we haven't even used most of it yet, like our blender or toaster oven. Has it been okay with stress levels with moving into a home that needs love? Paige: I get very stressed out about the house and he does not. Phillip: I just think it's going to take time. We have a lot of ideas about what we want to do, but things cost money and effort, and we don't have a lot of time to do them. So we have our big projects we're working on now.
Do you have any advice on wedding registries?
It's hard being patient to make your house a home when you move in.

are no night stands. We had no couches until recently. Paige: I'll be fine for months, but then when you start thinking about everything you have to do, it's stressful. We're terrible at following through with our checklists, like we've needed bar stools in our kitchen since we moved in. The current ones are from the previous owners and half of them are broken. That’s really admirable to not have cable or internet the first year of marriage. Phillip: I really like it. My friends don't, though. But don't worry, they still come. If there's beer, they'll come. Do you like to cook? Paige: Everything is really good because we've perfected the five things we make. We recently have developed an amazing recipe for venison meatballs, and we love to make BBQ chicken flatbread pizza. It's a nice time to hang out together. We clean together, too. Phillip: Well, that's not one of my favorite things. Paige: Sometimes he tries to sneak off and play guitar. Then I have to hide the guitar, which I hate to do. What is your favorite part about the house? Phillip: I like the location. We grew up in town but we were always very active in the outdoors, so I always knew I wanted to live on an acreage. That's all we really looked at, so when we got wind that this was going to be for sale, we put everything in on it. What are your favorite things about each other? Paige: I love Phil's sense of humor. Phillip: I think Paige is very caring and giving, like with her job, her family, and with me. Paige: I think you are too... Coming up on your one-year anniversary, what advice do you have for other newlyweds?

Phillip: Don't overreact, just take things as they come. Learn from each other and take it easy. Paige: We were young when we met, but we took it slow and didn't rush things. And we didn't live together before we were married and I think, for us, that was a good thing. Any plans for your anniversary, like dinner or a trip? Phillip: Not a trip, but something... Paige: Apparently he has something nice planned. We both have the day off and it will be fun. We have our cake in the freezer and a bottle of leftover champagne in the fridge, so we're good to go!
