Letter from the Publisher couture bridal and Posh Bridal Couture was also a stunner. The use of darker details in weddings was incredible to see, and our models looked like works of art as they sashayed around the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis. Aside from our six new styled shoots featured, we had the opportunity to discover beautiful real weddings that include a Minnesota brunch to remember, a breathtaking affair at Madeline Island in Wisconsin, a Custer State Park Resort celebration with a gorgeous gown, and so many more. Engagement Story
BRENNA + TERRENCE BY KYLE DETERMAN
STEPHANIE MARIE PHOTOGRAPHY
Brenna Gray and Terrence Dusenberry both had a love for helping others, which led to the beginning of their story. Both working at Hy-Vee, they started as cordial coworkers for some time, until Terrence made the first move. “When I first started [at Hy-Vee], we only knew each other from passing," remembered Brenna. "Then one day I got a text message from him out of the blue, saying something along the lines of, ‘I’ve seen you around for how many years, but I’ve never had an actual conversation with you.’ We just started talking from there.” Pleasantly surprised, Brenna agreed to join Terrence at local bar and deli, Quinton’s, starting their journey to forever. They began dating, their relationship consisting of summers at home and weekend getaways while Brenna was in school at Upper Iowa University. “I played soccer at [school], and Terrence would drive the hour and a half to come to my games and stay for the weekends," she
14
said. "Other times he would just randomly drive up when he got off work at six or seven and then drive back for work the next morning." Later on, Brenna broke her leg during soccer and needed surgery. To help her with "daily living", Terrence took a week off from his job to be there. "That was the moment I realized this guy is for real and really cares about me,” she recalled. Brenna remembers simple gestures that proved to be significant when Terrence was there during that period of her life. “At one point, I ended up saying ‘Terrence, I’m sorry, but could you wash my hair?’" she laughed. "He was always there for me, and never failed to show me how much he cared”. The feelings were obviously mutual, for Terrence soon decided the only logical next step was to propose to Brenna. In typical Terrence fashion, April 1 was the chosen day.

“WE KNEW WE WOULD HAVE TO PLAN EVERYTHING, AS WELL AS FUND EVERYTHING. SO THAT HAS BEEN REALLY NICE TO HAVE THE TIME TO PUT THINGS TOGETHER AND PLAN AT OUR OWN PACE” —BRENNA
“We were up at school for my senior banquet, and I had gone upstairs to unpack something." She continued, "I turned around, and he was down on one knee with the white ring box in front of him." After popping the question, she quickly replied with, "Absolutely!" "It was honestly the happiest moment of my life, just to know that I get to spend the rest of my life with this incredible person,” said Brenna. Now that a wedding was in the works, the couple knew they wanted and needed the time to plan their big day, so they decided on an extended engagement. “We knew we would have to plan everything, as well as fund everything," she said. "So that has been really nice to have the time to put things together and plan at our own pace”. Staying stress-free, Brenna and Terrence are very happy with how everything has gone thus far in the wedding planning process. Keeping
16
it on the simple side of things, their main concern is that everyone has "a fun and joyful night." As far as the honeymoon goes, they have something in the works. “We are going to try to do a mini getaway, like maybe go to the [Wisconsin] Dells for a couple of days," she said. "But since we just got our dog, we want to be home and spend time with her, or find a pet-friendly place to go.” Finley, a Pembroke Welsh Corgi, has played an integral part in Terrence and Brenna’s relationship and will have an equally important role in the wedding. One thing Brenna thanks Finley for is for highlighting even more of Terrence’s ability to care. “The way he took care of Finley when we first got her was incredible," said Brenna. "He would sit with her when she was crying or comfort me when I was worried about her, and it was really great to see his more sensitive side come out”.

his talented Northern California transplant is making roots in the Black Hills of South Dakota, calling Rapid City home. Kristina Barker of Kristina Barker Photography has a passion for photographing rural communities, and has had work featured in The New York Times, Buzzfeed, The Wall Street Journal, and other impressive media outlets. Using her talents of journalistic-style photography, Barker captures candid moments that will time capsule the most important emotions of the wedding day. She shares her top pieces of advice.
YOUR WEDDING DAY IS A CELEBRATION, NOT A PHOTO SHOOT.
Family portraits? We’re here to help craft a schedule that flows smoothly and creates time for what is important to you.
I always love when clients are honest about what they want out of their photographer. A recent client of mine flat out said, “I want photographs of my wedding, not wedding photos for Pinterest.” And I just loved her honesty in making it clear that candid moments and non-fussy portraits were really important to her enjoying her wedding day. I never want the photo parts of a wedding day to be disruptive to my couples’ (or their guests’) enjoyment of the day. Have a conversation with your photographer about what is most important to you: First look? Candid moments? Details?
AESTHETIC AND ATTITUDE. It’s not only important to love the style of imagery your photographer (or videographer) will deliver, but it’s also important to select a photographer that meshes well with your personalities. On your wedding day, you'll likely be spending as much time with your photographer as you will your spouse-tobe, so don’t overlook the importance of feeling comfortable with the personality and attitude of your photographer. Love outgoing extroverts? Or quiet observers? We all work differently, and there’s
definitely a personality out there that is going to put you at ease!
BE PRESENT, AND FORK OVER THAT CHECKLIST. The photo checklist is our worry - we won’t let the night end without getting that portrait of you and your great grandmother. But if there are things that need to get done in the morning or throughout the day, delegate those tasks (or better yet, have your wedding planner take over those loose ends). Your most important task of the day is to be present and engaged in the moments.
TELL YOUR GUESTS TO PUT THOSE PHONES AWAY.
The same goes for cameras during the ceremony - put those things down! I can’t even begin to count the number of times I look to the crowd to take photos of guests’ reactions during the ceremony and people have phones in front of their faces to take a (let’s be honest) crappy cell phone photo. When you have your phone out during a ceremony, you’re not fully present and soaking up the emotion of the moment. Also, the couple your supporting doesn’t want photos of a sea of cell phones. Tell your guests to put those things away because you want to share the experience with them. We’ve got the photos covered!

IOWA CIT Y, IA 319.3 25.16 25 BORROWMY VIN TAG E.C OM
BOR ROW MY VI NTAG E
edding photographer and thrifter extraordinaire, Macy Krall, is the owner of BORROW MY VINTAGE, a chic wedding rental website with a classic twist based out of Iowa City, Iowa. From renting out vintage furniture, to planning pop-up weddings, Macy and her husband, Ryan, are always on top of the newest wedding trends. DO had the chance to talk to her about how BMV started, what it’s like doing pop-up weddings, and how her husband is great at carrying couches.
How did you start Borrow My Vintage? Macy Krall: I started as, and still am, a wedding photographer (Macy Marie Photography). I used to have a studio in downtown Iowa City, where I had a bunch of props likes chalkboards or crates that I would use for engagement and newborn sessions. I would have brides come in and ask where I got my props, and ask if they could borrow them. That’s kind of where it started. I have always had a love for finding vintage things and thrifting, and it grew into something I never expected when we added furniture pieces. Thrifting definitely takes a special eye. Is there something specific you look for in the pieces you find? MK: Furniture-wise, I have to make 26
sure the frame and fabric are good, because I don’t get any of my couches or chairs redone. That is one thing I learned when working with a big rental company, that refurbishing vintage furniture is really expensive, especially when working with velvet. Just think, if you were to go through all the trouble of redoing this beautiful piece and then it gets spilled on after the first use. So, I have to make sure the fabric and frame are in really good condition, as well as making sure the pattern is something that will rent well. I have a few floral pieces that are really in right now. Besides floral, what other trends are you seeing right now? MK: Boho is really big, and so is velvet. I just recently got a request for stripes, which will be fun. I just kind of go off
Pinterest and every once in a while, I will do surveys with past brides to find out what they wish I had had available when they were renting from me What role does your husband, Ryan, play in BMV? MK: We got married almost two years ago, and I was a little nervous about what he would think of this stuff and if he would be into it or not. At first, he didn’t want anything to do with the photography, but he said he would be 50/50 with me on BMV. He is definitely the lifter and maker and is really good at carrying couches by himself. We will have brides that bring in a picture off Pinterest, and Ryan will build it for them. He also does a lot of prepping and cleaning between weddings. He is so amazing, and I don’t know if I could do this without
him. He isn’t super talkative naturally, but when you get him in wedding mode, he is so nice to the brides and he is so helpful when he does deliveries. He does more BMV than me right now, for sure, and I definitely can’t drive the trailer (laughs). What should brides expect when they come to you? MK: I start by asking for a list of things the brides are interested in, including the names of pieces they would like to use. Brides tend to love the way our furniture is named. I usually tell them to come on out, we’ll make an appointment, and then they can look in our warehouse, which we built on our property this past April. I like to start in my office and get as many details as I can; colors, venue, ideas, themes, etc. – then I can offer

3 FUN FACTS ABOUT BORROW MY VINTAGE • • •
BMV started in Macy’s living room with just 10 mason jars. Macy gets together with fellow wedding renters at an annual conference to discuss renting, weddings, and trends.

what I think would work best for their ideas and plans. They can either hire me for the day to design and decorate, or just rent things from us. A lot of people don’t like to thrift or don’t have the time to go to Hobby Lobby and search for what they need. That’s where I come in, because I love thrifting and finding what they want. Let’s talk pop-up weddings. MK: We first learned about pop-up weddings when we went to Nashville for our annual conference. One of the rental companies started it as a way to display all of their furniture and show that they could plan and style a wedding, have people show up, and get married all in one day. After Nashville, I came home and was really the first one to offer pop-up weddings in Iowa. We offer two kinds: the first one consists of three Saturdays throughout the year that brides can choose from (spring, summer, winter), where they will be one of three weddings on that day. The other option allows the bride to pick a day Monday-Thursday or Sunday, and be the only one on that day. With either option, the wedding, ceremony, and reception usually lasts about 90 minutes, and you can have up to 30 people in attendance. It’s really nice, because the venue we like to use for pop-up weddings, Little Lights in West Branch, is owned by one of my good friends, and another one of my best friends is a florist. It works out really well when you’re a wedding vendor, because all of your friends are in the business, too. At a pop-up wedding, the couple gets a bouquet and boutonniere they're free to keep, and on top of that, I like to bring in some garland as decoration. We also have a legal officiant who really loves the idea of quick and beautiful pop-up weddings. She will get in contact with the couple prior to the wedding date and get to know them a little bit, so she can
customize the ceremony based on what they want. After the ceremony, which is accompanied by music, the couple will come straight outside with me to do a portrait session, while their guests enjoy a sparkling bar (which is alcoholfree). When the pictures are finished, the newlyweds cut a sweetheart cake that they can take home, and end it with a big cheers to the couple! From there they can do what they want, whether it’s to go to dinner, head to the bars, or meet at their house with friends and family. What are the benefits to pop-up weddings? MK: These are great for people who want to have a legal marriage but want more than just a courthouse wedding. And then, all they have to really worry about is getting invites out and showing up for a great wedding. Do you have a favorite story or memory from your time in the wedding business? MK: I did a wedding last June where the bride ended up becoming a great friend. She had this Pinterest idea of being married in the woods, surrounded by beautiful vintage furniture. By the end of our first meeting, it seemed like they were renting everything I had! From tables to plates to candles, her vision and my idea clicked so well that we became best friends through the process. We ended up setting up their entire wedding and photographing it, which was simply amazing. Their ceremony was followed by a first dance, a food truck, and driving away in a vintage car. I will never forget that wedding, and I will definitely not forget that bride. She’s my favorite!

Engagement Story
CASSANDRA + CLAY BY KYLE DETERMAN
ANNIE OTZEN PHOTOGRAPHY Cassandra Gradert and Clay Walser are getting ready for the party of the season: their wedding. Which is fitting, considering they met at a New Year’s Eve party, ringing in the new year with what would turn into a new love. Even though Clay’s journey to pop the question didn’t go as planned, the end result was all either of them could’ve hoped for. “My brother-in-law and sister went to college with Clay in Brookings, and they had talked to him about me, and had talked to me about him before the party," said Cassandra. "At the actual party, we probably only spoke about five words to each other. After the party though, we saw each other at a cattle show and started talking.” The couple says they can’t pinpoint the exact date they started seeing each other, but they do remember it was the end of February, excited and filled with lots of laughs.
30
“Clay is so laid back and is always looking on the bright side of things," she said. "He is also very intelligent. Right away, I knew he had his life together. It didn’t hurt he was super funny and very handsome.” Cassandra recalls her realizing Clay was a ‘fly by the seat of your pants’ kind of guy, which only drew her to him more. “You never catch him in a bad mood, which definitely makes it hard to be mad at him," laughed Cassandra. "He is always chipper and goes with the flow, and I'm not. He will dance and sing, and whenever I’m in a bad mood, he always makes me smile. Like, when I have a bad day at work, he will dance around me in the kitchen, and everything I was mad about or all of my worries are just gone; that makes me fall in love with him more and more every day.” Falling for each other by the hour,
"HE WILL DANCE AND SING, AND WHENEVER I’M IN A BAD MOOD, HE ALWAYS MAKES ME SMILE.” —CASSANDRA
da i nt yobs e s s i ons.c om 31
Cassandra and Clay were quickly inseparable. Clay’s love for Cassandra has been evident from the beginning, especially during some of her toughest times. “When Clay and I first started seeing each other, I was super sick," she said. "I was actually in the hospital a lot, and never once did he think about leaving me or thinking that I was too much for his life."
“We were out in San Francisco for another wedding. I kind of had a hunch that he might do it while we were out there. We toured Napa Valley, the Sonoma Valley, the beaches and the Golden Gate Bridge, and he never did it," said Cassandra. "He always told me he would do it while we were alone, so when we were at the beach and there was absolutely no one in sight, I thought he might do it."
Cassandra has endured several health issues over the years and said Clay has been through all of it along with her.
It didn't happen. The last night of the trip they visited Twin Peaks, which is an area that overlooks San Francisco.
"He has been amazing, and I don’t think I could’ve gotten through it without him," she said. "It’s almost like God put him in my life for a reason, right when I needed him." Clay knew he was ready to make Cassandra his wife, but the timing had to be perfect, especially because Cassandra had expressed multiple times that however he did it, it had to be memorable. “I knew I was going to propose to her months before I actually did," he said. "She was the girl that I loved.” Well, it was definitely memorable, just not in the way he had planned.
32
This moment also didn't go as planned. "He bought me my favorite ice cream, and when we got up there it was pouring rain and so foggy we couldn’t even see out of our windshield," recalled Cassandra. "We left and he was in the worst mood." Returning back to the hotel, Clay sat on the bed, staring at the ground. Suggesting they should get packing because of an early departure the next morning, Cassandra was confused when he got up and left without a word to get ice for their drinks.
"When he got back, I was changing into my pajamas and he said, ‘Okay, I just have to ask you,’ and got down on one knee and proposed," she said. "I remember thinking, ‘He had to wait until the very last day we were here,’ but it was totally him, out of the blue. It will always be something we will always remember.” Back in the Midwest and ready to tie the knot, the couple spends their time working out in the wee hours of the morning, planning their rose-gold themed wedding, and playing with their dog, Bella. While Cassandra is busy preparing for the best day of their lives, Clay is only concerned about one thing. “I’m just excited I get to spend the rest of my life with her, and to start the next chapter of our lives together as a couple," he said. "Who knows for sure what will happen, but I’m super excited for the future with her.”

T
HE NEWLY RENOVATED AVALON EVENTS CENTER IN FARGO, ND DEFINITELY KNOWS A THING OR TWO ABOUT WEDDING VENUES. WITH 55,000 SQUARE FEET, STATE-OF-THE-ART TECHNOLOGY, AND MULTIPLE ROOMS AND SCENARIOS TO CHOOSE FROM, THEY HAVE SEEN IT ALL. WEDDING SALES & SOCIAL EVENTS MANAGER VALERIE CRANE HIGHLIGHTS SOME OF THE MOST IMPORTANT THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND WHEN LOOKING FOR WHERE YOU’LL BE CELEBRATING YOUR BIG DAY.
HOW YOU HANDLE A CRISIS/ISSUE WILL DETERMINE IF YOU ENJOY YOUR DAY AND IF EVERYTHING WILL RUN SMOOTHLY. More than likely, most people won’t even know what the crisis is. Hiding that and brushing it off is key. If you get upset, then everyone around you will get upset. It's very important you handle a crisis issue effectively. Understand the problem and, of course, depending on the severity, find options and alternatives to fix or alleviate it immediately. We like to focus on what exactly we can do to positively move forward!
PERSONAL TOUCHES ARE REMEMBERED LONG AFTER THE “I DOS.” When you think back over your wedding and celebration, your memories aren’t about how much money the flowers cost or if you forgot a table runner. The things you remember are the personalized messages, mementos, and true acts of love and kindness from the people who love you! A personal note, family heirloom, or something made by you, always means the most.
34
DON’T OVER-PLAN OR OVERDO ON ALL THE DÉCOR. When you think about the weddings you’ve attended, what do you recall? You remember the couple, if you had a great time, and if the food was good. Concentrating on what people remember will ensure you don’t get too hung up on what details, like if your cake is right, or if the artwork in the room goes with your color scheme!
PICKING THE RIGHT VENUE. Listening to what the couple wants is key. Our venue can be molded to meet a couple’s needs, but there may be some things we can’t change. Trust the professional at the venue. They know the best way to use the space. No venue is 100 percent perfect for everyone. When researching a venue, listen to word of mouth and take in account additional research so that you know if the space offers and has what you are looking for.

As if medical school wasn’t exciting enough, Callie added meeting a handsome man from London to the mix. Jump to a different pond and you can find Crosby proposing to Callie in the middle of Golden Gate Park in San Francisco on a beautifully random Tuesday. After dinner with Callie’s mother and siblings, the planning began. Pretty busy with her pediatric residency, Callie decided she and Crosby would handle the big stuff, while her parents dealt with the smaller details of the big day, which was easy since they were getting married at Callie’s family home on Madeline Island.
36
On the morning of the big day, while the bridal party prepped their hair and makeup, the groomsmen began their day with a leisurely swim to the sandbar in Lake Superior. In succession to a very personal and intimate ceremony, the couple celebrated with friends, family, and a live band. Even when the generator died, the band never missed a beat, which kept all of the guest having fun and dancing. Ending the evening on the beach around a bonfire, the couple was ready to begin their new life covered in sand and surrounded by love.

A tractor. A pretty girl. The beginning of a love story. During corn harvest, Kyle decided the time was right to propose to Chelsey, whom he met through high school friends years before. The couple had a clear vision from the get-go: merge all of their favorite things in one glamorous, but humble wedding. Quickly deciding to set up a beautiful tent in Kyle’s backyard, the only thing left to plan were the details. Lucky enough to find a naturally

While the day grew nearer, the couple found themselves surrounded by cacti, succulents, and tacos and ice cream. Both somewhat ‘particular’ about food, they wanted to pick foods that everyone would enjoy, especially on such a glorious day.

Samantha and KJ shared more than just chemistry in high school and carried that on to adulthood. Ready for the next level, KJ recited a poem, dropped to one knee, and proposed to Samantha at Glacier National Park. An outdoorsy couple, they were drawn to the idea of having their wedding outside. Eight months later, their wedding day arrived with perfect weather for the celebration. Samantha's day began with an outpouring of love and support

Katie and Pat’s courses intersected with a smile and a stoplight. Both on a run, the two quickly merged paths, starting the marathon that would be their relationship. Fast forward six months, an abundance of runs, and one perfect Christmas proposal, and these two were ready to get hitched. With eight months to plan the wedding of their dreams, one of the biggest details was already set in stone: the venue. Katie knew she wanted to get married at her family’s lake house in Crosslake, MN, which Pat immediately agreed to. From there, the two gathered friends, families, and stellar vendors to create the intimate wedding the couple had always wanted.
102
White, green, light blue, and gold covered the grounds of Katie’s family home, and despite the rains that filled the morning, the skies cleared to showcase the remarkable ceremony. Followed by appetizers, drinks, and upbeat music, the couple danced the night away with their closest family and friends. From a good friend as their officiant to having their parents lead the planning process, Katie and Pat swear they couldn’t have done any of it without their familial support. Ending the night with a glamorous show of fireworks, the couple set the pace for their future together, and it is nothing short of exciting.

Newlyweds AT H O M E
LONI + ROBERT SWANEY MICHAEL LIEDTKE PHOTOGRAPHY
High school sweethearts turned cat parents, Loni and Robert Swaney have always had each other’s hearts. Little did they know it would lead to the perfect wedding, the perfect home, and the best beginning to a long-lasting marriage in Sioux Falls, SD. Robert, a building manager for the University Center, and Loni, a patient representative at Avera McKennan, invited us to see what the first three years of marriage looks like for a modern Midwest couple. From spontaneous burger and ice cream dates to marathoning The Office, DO was able to see just one of the many adventures these two have taken on. How did you two meet? Loni: We actually met at a hardcore show in Jefferson, SD. Robert: There is a community center there that my friends used to book shows at. So for a couple years, that’s where I would spend my weekends. L: I was just going to meet some friends, and I didn’t really know about the music scene there, but Robert was there and started talking to me. We would occasionally talk throughout the night, but when my friend and I were driving home, she got a text from him asking about me. I didn’t have texting at the time, so she gave him my name, and then we connected on Facebook. A couple days later we hung out, got ice cream, and went to the Japanese Gardens… we’ve been together ever since. 120
“WE WERE BOTH PRETTY YOUNG AND SHY, BUT THE FIRST DATE WENT WELL!” -ROBERT How did you know you wanted to marry Loni? R: I knew for over a year. We had talked for a little bit about wanting her to finish school before we got married. Then, her junior year, we knew we were ready to get married, and Loni wasn’t really feeling what she was doing in school, so I waited about a month and did it. L: I remember I was planning on staying in Vermillion for the weekend, but Robert was adamant that this was the only time his family could have Thanksgiving, so I went down.

R: I had this whole elaborate plan. I was moving furniture around, and I only got halfway done with my big plan before I had to go to work. Driving home from work, Loni was only about 30 minutes away from my apartment, so I scratched everything. I ended up putting the ring on my patio, and I brought her up there and asked her to marry me.
him to get up so I could hug him, and I never even said yes! It just happened!
L: I was really confused at first. I was like ‘What are you doing? Get up!’ I remember wanting
L: It was surreal. We had the most perfect weather we could’ve asked for. Everything went super smoothly,
“WE JUST KNEW WE WERE TOGETHER, AND JUST LEFT IT AT THAT.”-ROBERT What are some highlights of the wedding day?
besides the fact that my dress was stepped on and ripped right before the ceremony. But, at that point, I didn’t care what happened because we were getting married. R: The highlight for me was seeing friends from all different walks of my life together for us. Watching them get to know each other was really cool, it was like different parts of my life were coming together. L: Yeah, seeing two different groups of people at the same table, all getting along
so well, was really amazing.
“EVERYTHING SURROUNDING OUR WEDDING DAY WENT SO SMOOTHLY.” -LONI Do you have any wedding day advice for people? R: We weren’t actually being very honest about how overwhelmed we were with everything. Then, about a week before the wedding,
people actually reached out to us with specific help, and that was really needed. I think if you’re more honest upfront with what you need help with, that will make everything a lot easier. L: Also, if you’re helping someone with their wedding, offering specific things is really helpful. We had some friends from church offer to do lunch the day of the ceremony, which is something we hadn’t even thought about. They took care of food for the entire bridal party and more. Just knowing that nothing is going to ruin the fact you’re getting married, then everything else will seem okay. Having that kind of perspective is really important.
“IF YOU GO INTO YOUR WEDDING DAY WITH THE CORRECT PERSPECTIVE, NOTHING ELSE MATTERS” -BOTH How did moving in together go? R: I didn’t have much stuff, and Loni didn’t either since she had been living in a dorm. We were already buying things together before the wedding, so that made it easier. Overall, it was a very smooth transition. What is your style like? L: Our style used to be a little more modern than it is now. Now, it’s more mid-century modern with a vintage touch. Our numberone priority for getting a house was it had to be early 1900s, and this house was built in 1905, so we wanted to keep matching that style. How has the first move into a house been? R: It was good, but really overwhelming. Accepting
da i nt yobs e s s i ons.c om 123
that we wouldn’t be moved in and decorated in a weekend was the first step in the transition. L: The whole week before we closed on the house, Robert’s car broke down in Kansas City, and he didn’t get back until an hour before our final walkthrough. But after that, we have found it’s fun to slowly fill our house and make it into what we want. We want to enjoy that process. What does a typical weekend look like for you? L: We watch a lot of The Office. R: A lot of Netflix and chilling. L: Weekends are for thrifting and antiquing. We spend a lot of time doing that, and we like to try different foods and places to eat. We do pretty good at cooking at home, but I hate cooking. Have you guys developed roles in your everyday lives? L: I do some laundry and dishes, but Robert does all of the deep cleaning. I try to help, but I’m a huge procrastinator, so he's just much better at it. R: We just kind of settled into the things we like and are good at. We definitely don’t let social norms define what we do for each other or around the house. I like cooking and she doesn’t, so I cook. I like accounting and she doesn’t, so I’ll do bills. L: They are the roles we had at the apartment, but extended. We already knew what our strengths were, so it was pretty easy for things to fall into place. Did you guys learn anything new about each other after moving in together? R: She really doesn’t like cooking [laughed]. L: Yeah, I really hate cooking. I thought maybe I would cook a little bit, but nope. For me, I knew going into it that Robert was messy. One thing I learned was the extent of his messiness. Any advice for newlyweds? R: I think perspective is really important. Understanding the needs of both yourself and your partner is the key to making things work. I think it’s really easy for people to feel like their needs aren’t being met, or they aren’t being loved fully. When really, it is just a perspective change that needs 124
to happen. Also, having a solid understanding of what makes people who they are is really important to understanding them on an emotional level. L: It was really important for me to understand that he needs alone time to recharge, and I don’t. So realizing that he can go hang out in his office with his record player and I can go hang out with my friends really helped us understand each other and value our time together. What are your favorite parts about each other? L: He's just so loving and humble. He never complains, and he's always putting other people before himself. R: She’s very passionate. She just cares so much and is tremendously passionate about life.
