Every barn quilt tells a story
Evert creates local masterpieces
By Abby Wiedmeyer abby.w@dairystar.com
NORTH FREEDOM, Wis. – When Lisa Evert sees a nice barn, she sees potential for art. The Sauk County dairy woman has been painting barn quilts on wooden boards for almost a decade. She has created close to 60 works of art to date.
“They all kind of have stories which makes it kind of fun,” Evert said. “I just use my imagination (for designs).”
The rst barn quilt Evert painted was a volunteer effort to help the Sauk Prairie FFA Chapter. They were trying to get barn quilts started in the area and approached Evert about painting one. She agreed but did not realize it would stick as a hobby until someone else recruited her to paint one for them.
“The FFA helped me get started, and I really started to
enjoy it,” Evert said. “They have gone to great lengths to photograph so many barn quilts and have maps available at the chamber ofce so people can travel the county and view the rural community and its decorated barns.”
Evert and her husband, Tim, have been in partnership operating United Dreams Dairy with Rick and Ronda Lehman since 1997. The farm is near North Freedom.
In 2017, the farm expanded to include Jeff Evert, Tim and Lisa’s son, and Michael Niemann, Rick and Ronda’s nephew, in the partnership. Together and with the help of their employees, they milk around 750 cows.
The sizes of the barn quilts Evert creates vary, but for a large building, the quilts are typically 8 feet long and 8 feet high. She uses highquality paint to make sure the quilts hold up against the elements. The work is done in the heated shop on the farm.

Lisa Evert displays photos of barn quilts Dec. 15, 2022, at her farm near North Freedom, Wisconsin. Evert has created close to 60 barn quilts of various sizes over the past decade.
by painting the boards with white primer. She paints the backs also to make sure the wood is protected from the elements on all sides. Then, the design is drawn out, which involves a lot of measuring and math.
“I’ve had my husband help me with different ones,” Evert said. “I had a really hard one with circles which are hard. We actually set it up against the wall, and he helped me come up with circles with a big compass.”
After the design is drawn, Evert uses tape to achieve clean lines. She has learned that high-quality tape prevents colors from bleeding into each other. Creating an 8-by-8 barn quilt takes time because Evert only paints one color per day. Sometimes, Evert lets the paint dry for a day in between painting and before removing the tape.
Most of the quilts are custom orders. When discussing design, people bring ideas to Evert, and she modies them to make original artwork.
“They’re all unique,” Evert said. “I try to change the pattern a little bit.”
Evert considers the color of the buildings on the farm and said little details make a big difference. For example, if a quilt is going on a dark building, Evert leaves a white border to make it pop. Another important detail is using stainless steel screws when mounting the quilts to barns.
“You don’t want to use any screws that are going to rust,” Evert said. “They would probably bleed.”
The majority of the barn quilts Evert has painted are relatively local to her. Evert said she checks on how the art is holding up when she drives by.
While every quilt is unique, some hold a spot closer to Evert’s heart because of the story behind
them. Patriotic themed quilts are among her favorites to create.
“I did a patriotic quilt with an airplane on it honoring the memory of Tim’s uncle who farmed near us,” Evert said. “He was a pilot and used one of his hay elds as a landing strip and housed his plane in one of his out buildings right on his dairy farm. That was a very special quilt and is within a quarter mile of our farm.”
Another quilt Evert holds near is one she painted for the barn on the property she grew up on.
“That one is special to me because that one hangs on my mom’s barn in town,” Evert said. “She is 88 so who knows how long she’s going to live there.”
The parlor at the dairy has one of Evert’s quilts on it; however, she has yet to paint one for the barn at her home. She said the barn needs to be painted before she wants to hang a quilt, and she is also gearing herself up to paint the pattern she wants at home because it is a complicated design.
Evert said it can sometimes be a challenge when someone orders a barn quilt and does not realize the associated cost. The wooden sign boards alone costs approximately $120, and the paints and supplies are expensive as well.
“I kind of run into trouble when people don’t want to spend a lot of money on them,” Evert said. “I don’t use cheap paint, and mine are holding up pretty good.”
While a lot of her barn quilts have been donated or gifted, Evert said she is happy to have a creative outlet.
“Now I drive around and I’ll see a barn and think that barn needs a barn quilt,” Evert said. “Some barns just should have them.”

Factors that inuence the rst lactation
Mitchell presents on pieces of the milk production puzzle
By Grace Jeurissen grace.j@star-pub.com
JORDAN, Minn. – With the costs of raising heifers increasing along with input prices, farmers are paying attention to the potential that comes out of their youngstock groups.
Local farmers gathered at a Vita Plus workshop Dec. 16, 2022, in Jordan to learn about winter calf care, data collecting and employee management, among other items.
Dr. Lucas Mitchell, a calf and heifer specialist with Vita Plus, presented information and studies regarding calf and heifer rearing and the effect it has on rst-lactation milk production.
“First lactation heifers make up 30%-50% of most United States dairy herds,” Mitchell said. “First lactation sets the tone for future performance.”
Once heifers come into the barn after freshening, their job is to produce milk and in 70 days be ready for reproduction again. If a farmer is combatting problems from calving, improper growth or effects from weaning, milk production is affected as well as protability.
“We can’t expect cows that bottom out during rst lactation to come back and be a rockstar,” Mitchell said.
Mitchell said he refers to a heifer raising puzzle with four pieces. The frame of the puzzle is comprised of in utero care with data regarding heat stress and preweaning growth rate. Mitchell said those two factors set a foundation for the rest of a heifer’s growth.
Inside the puzzle are the prepubertal period and freshening.
Mitchell used data from the University of Florida to showcase heat stress and the affects it has on calves longer down the line. The graphs should that cows experiencing heat stress after only receiving shade as a heat abatement practice gave birth to calves that grew slower and produced 11 pounds less milk than the cows provided shade, fans and sprinklers as heat abatement.
The same study looked at granddaughters of the cows that experienced heat stress during pregnancy and calving, and the granddaughter’s production was affected also.
“Dams that experience heat stress tend to not last as long in the herd,” Mitchell said. “The effects of heat stress are a generational problem.”
Mitchell said genetics are a factor in milk production but certain management practices can help the calf in achieving its highest genetic potential in production. Even if the rst step toward a better lactation starts in utero, there are things farms can do in the preweaning period to ensure growth.
“The preweaning period tends to get a lot of attention,” Mitchell said. “A study from Cornell University compared average daily gain in the preweaning stage to pounds of milk in lactations. The bottom line was feed more milk, get more milk.”
Post-natal care of calves is vital to their ability to stay in the herd. Calves should receive quality colostrum within two hours after birth and additional colostrum 12 hours after birth.
“If we mess up the vital rst few weeks of a calf’s life, that puts a stamp on her throughout production,” Mitchell said. “We want to raise problem-free heifers to be problem- free cows.”
Mitchell said if calves show signs of potential illness, the most effective treatment is electrolytes at the rst sign of the calf showing abnormal behavior.
“As the number of days a calf spends sick in the rst four months increases, rst lactation milk production decreases,” Mitchell said. “It’s critical to get it taken care of quickly.”
Signs of abnormal behavior could be a droopy ear, slower eating and lower feed intake. Mitchell said the best way to treat problems before becoming a larger issue is by treating quickly and effectively; if needed, work with a veterinarian to help determine which antibiotics will be most effective for each challenge.
Mitchell said starter intake and milk intake go hand in hand. Starter helps form the rumen, and milk is the most concentrated form of energy for calves to consume. The trick with the

“I like to say that there are two steps to raising a calf,” Mitchell said. “Step one is get them to be a ruminant. This means putting them on starter. Step two is getting them to use that rumen. This could mean introducing forages just before weaning and continuing to provide them through the prepubertal stage.”
The prepubertal stage, age 4 to 10 months, is often the forgotten stage, Mitchell said. These heifers do not require the intensive management compared to other growth stages.
Mitchell said data from Cornell University shows that 1.8 pounds to 2 pounds of average daily gain in young heifers was the most efcient.
“At that 1.8 pounds of gain per day, we are
getting the additional milk in production, and we aren’t pushing additional feed into the calves bringing the cost of raising a heifer up,” he said. “That being said, spending an additional $50 during the preweaning phase could mean additional milk in the tank which is what pays the bills.”
At 12 months of age, heifers are breeding age, and the next step is to get them ready for their rst lactation. Mitchell said the freshening stage is important to focus on, getting the heifers to their ideal frame size and weight.
This can be a delicate process, because pushing the heifers to gain weight too quickly or gaining too much weight will have negative effects on their transition into production.
“When cows calve in fat, we know when they
are struggling, because they get ketosis or milk fever; heifers hide these problems better,” Mitchell said. “Ideally, we want heifers at 95% mature body height when they calve in. Otherwise, we are feeding to grow them while they are trying to produce milk.”
Mitchell said the economic benchmark for Holstein heifers to calve in is at 22-24 months of age. Heifers are almost full grown but are not sacricing milk production.
“It’s important to remember that there are a lot of factors that can affect rst-lactation milk production,” Mitchell said. “This data should be able to help you assess your heifer raising program and adjust it to benet the future of your herd however you see t.”

Allenton, Wisconsin Washington County 1,200 cows
Questions answered by Nick Beck, Mike’s son:
Tell us your favorite experience of Cale helping with chores. He is always available to work. When we call, he is always there. Cale is happy all the time, even when things are not going well on the farm. He likes coming to work and doesn’t complain like a lot of other kids do these days.
What qualities does Cale have that benet the farm? He is very punctual and catches on to new tasks quickly. He takes care of all the youngstock, and I don’t have to worry about it. I know it’s getting done the way I want. I don’t have to check his work.
Questions for Cale: What are your responsibilities on the farm? I feed calves and take care of youngstock, which also includes
the steers. I also help vaccinate calves and treat sick calves. I make sure all the animals are bedded and also help with bedding the cows with sand in the main barn. I help the feeder sometimes, too, and do other general chores. I haul manure year-round, and in the summer, I also haul hay. I also x things and do general maintenance and repairs. I wash and maintain equipment, including greasing tractors, etc. I get here about noon each day and stay until it gets dark or even longer. I am in the youth apprenticeship program at school and only have a half day of classes, but I also get credits for coming to work. I enjoy that I receive high school credits while also getting paid. I work on the weekends, arriving between 5:30-6 a.m. to feed calves, and then I stay all day to do other chores. In the fall when I had football, I worked here in the morning until 10 a.m., then went to school, attended football practice and came back to the farm after football to help with eldwork and hauling manure.
When did you begin helping on the farm? I started working on the farm in August 2021. I was doing landscaping before that, and I liked it a little, but I did not have as much freedom as I do on the farm. I can learn a lot more here, and I also get to operate machinery.
How do you balance school, extracurricular activities and farm chores? Being a part of the youth apprenticeship program makes my school day shorter, allowing me to work on the farm more. I am also working on the FFA Supervised Agricultural Experience project right now. I was the captain of my football team and
helped lead us to a conference championship. I also like to make drone videos of farming, particularly during harvest – that’s a hobby of mine. I’ve made about 20 videos on the farm that I post on TikTok and sometimes YouTube. I’m a busy man, but I t it all in a day.
How has working on the farm shaped your character? It has taught me problem solving skills, a good work ethic and high responsibility in what I do.
What do you love most about farm life? It is different than anything else I’ve ever done. On the farm, I’m working with lives, not like with landscaping where you might be working with bricks, for example. The cows are a high responsibility. These guys are liv-
ing and moving which is important to think about as you work with them.
What is one thing you have learned from working alongside your employer? I have learned about the pride behind a farm and how much a farm shapes somebody. Also, taking things slow is better than rushing through something. It gives you the opportunity to do things right versus making mistakes. Cattle don’t take a break. They are active 24/7, 365 days a year.
What are your future plans? After high school, I would like to keep working here for a little bit. I really enjoy it. I might get involved in equipment operating someday because I enjoy that too.

When do you do chores and what chores do you do? On school days, I help at night, and on days with no school, I help in the morning and night. I can do all the chores.
What are your favorite and least favorite chores? My favorite chore is milking because I like seeing the cows and learning their tag numbers. My least favorite chore is feeding the pigs because they knock me over when I go in to feed them.
Do you have a favorite animal on your farm? My favorite cow was No. 10, and she was just shipped. I showed her as a heifer. She was always nice, and I loved her. She was my girl.
