Excellence in dairy

Heyls receive ND commissioner’s award By Jan Lefebvre jan.l@star-pub.com

TOWNER, N.D. — In North Dakota, dairy farmers are increasingly hard to come by. That is one reason the Heyl family, which owns PAYDAK Dairy near Towner, appreciated receiving the state’s 2023 Commissioner’s Award of Dairy Excellence Jan. 17, during the North Dakota Dairy Convention in Bismarck. Jonas Heyl said persevering within North Dakota’s dairy scene is not for the faint of heart. “We’re crazy or stupid, or maybe a little bit of both,” Heyl said. “I kind of joked when we received the award that, since there are (so few) dairy farms left in the state, how many of them already got the award?” One year ago, there were 37 grade A and B dairy farms remaining in North Dakota. Today, there are 32 grade farms operating, according to Rep. Dawson Holle. Heyl said that in 2023, a farm that received the dairy excellence award in recent years closed, as did a neighboring farm. “The dairy up the road from us, a 1000-head dairy, shut their doors,” Heyl said. “When beef prices are so good and dairy prices are so poor — and the government programs want such a high premium to protect a oor that doesn’t even seem protable when in-

ation is high, costs are high, freight costs are high, and corporations are taking a bigger slice of our pie — it’s hard to make ends meet.” Heyl and his wife, Sam, operate their farm with a team of eight full-time employees. They milk 300 cows twice a day in a double-8 parallel parlor and raise their youngstock. They also grow alfalfa, corn, soybeans, canola and small grains on 2,500 acres and pasture 200-300 animals each year on 700 acres. Milk from the farm travels three hours to the Dairy Farmers of America processing plant in Pollock, South Dakota, where it is made into specialty cheeses. The Heyls met in college and came back to Sam’s family farm in 2005, buying the farm from her parents in 2016. The couple has three young children who are the fourth generation on the farm, which was homesteaded by Sam’s grandparents in 1941. “For us, we’re trying to do the best that we can,” Heyl said. “For the rst time since we got the farm, we were in the red last year. We had to take out of operating (funds) to pay bills. We’ve never had to do that.” He went to his father-inlaw to seek advice. “He said that (being in the red) is going to happen (in dairy farming), and it’s probably going to happen three or four more times,” Heyl said. “It’s just something where you’ve got to weather the storm.” The Heyls were able to continue moving forward. Heyl said being efcient by incorporating sustainable practices has helped them keep the farm healthy.

The Heyls milk 300 cows twice a day in a double-8 parallel parlor and grow alfalfa, corn, soybeans, canola and small grains on 2,500 acres near Towner, North Dakota. “Going forward, we will continue to try to be more efcient in what we do,” Heyl said. “I do a lot in regenerative farming where we’ve saved a lot of input costs by producing our own products, starting with the byproduct of manure, so that I’m not buying synthetic fertilizer anymore. I make compost tea for a starter fertilizer and do different things with our lagoons to create natural fertilizer so that we can save some money.”

Heyl said conservation practices t well into his family’s farming philosophy. “I am adamantly a believer in being a good steward of my land,” he said. “I practice regenerative farming, using notill farming practices whenever I can, cover crops, using manure and putting down green crops to capture carbon — I’m into all that.” The Heyls also worked with their county’s Natural Resources Conservation Service

Wide models available for 6 ft. bales

in 2019 using an Environmental Quality Incentives Program grant to build a 30- by 96-foot hoop greenhouse. “We’ve since expanded the garden around the greenhouse, and in the hoop house, we put tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers,” Heyl said. “It extends our growing season about a month in the spring and a month in the fall.” Turn to HEYLS | Page 3

The Heyls house their herd in a freestall barn on their farm near Towner, North Dakota. The Heyls also pasture 200-300 animals each year on 700 acres. The Heyls use the produce to help feed staff, and the project has provided more diversied training for interns on J-1 visas, whom the Heyls have welcomed to their farm. Heyl said Sam’s parents are experts at canning and largely take care of preserving the produce. “We get canned fruits and vegetables all year-round because of their hard work,” Heyl said. “We also sell as much as we can on-site, mostly by word of mouth. Once in a while, I’ll take a trailerful of goods into town and put up some signs. Whatever is left over goes to the food pantries.” Selling produce is also a way to reach out to the community when fewer people each year are connected to agriculture. “There are few jobs with more importance than what we do,” Heyl said. “Sadly, consumers are being distanced from us, and we need to (educate) so that we aren’t attacked by organizations or people who are misinformed. We try to bridge the gap as much as we can, but when we’re working as much as we do and as hard as we do, it’s hard to make and nd time to do that, especially when we have a family.” Finding time to attend the award ceremony was even a challenge. Heyl said, luckily, Sam’s parents got the kids

to school and took care of them while the Heyls made the two-hour trip to Bismarck for the convention. “(Department of Agriculture staff) knew that if they didn’t give us enough advanced warning, we might not have been able to be there to accept the award,” Heyl said. “Dairy farmers don’t get off the farm very often, and it’s a big deal. None of it could have happened without our employees’ help to keep the farm running.” In a released statement about the Heyls, North Dakota Commissioner of Agriculture Doug Goehring acknowledged the commitment it takes to run a successful dairy farm in these times. “The PAY-DAK Dairy has consistent, high-quality milk and a remarkable inspection record,” Goehring said. “Despite the challenges, it is encouraging to know that the Heyl family is committed to the dairy lifestyle and producing an excellent product for consumers.” Back on the farm, the Heyls have taken the award in stride. “It’s nice to be recognized, but we certainly don’t do this to get awards,” Heyl said. “We’re honored to have gotten it, and we’ve received a lot of praise for it. But any dairy farmer who takes pride in what they do deserves this award.”

Y E A R S

A look back at 5, 10 and 20 years ago 5 years ago Twins take on dairying together It was normal for twin brothers, Carter and Cody Zidlicky, from Decorah, Iowa, to share many things in life, including their interest in becoming a dairy farmer. They bought a herd in 2017, and the twins worked hard to maintain their barn that housed 45 registered Ayrshire cows. The boys had full-time jobs off the farm and found themselves working long days. With the help of their mom, Karrie, who did many milkings when the boys had to work 14-hour shifts off the farm, they managed to keep doing what they enjoyed. They knew in order to pay the bills they needed their other jobs. They found themselves questioning if the cows were the right thing to do, but when they went into the barn and saw what their accomplishments, they knew it was. When the time comes to exit Andy and Darienne Frickson, of Dakota, Minnesota, had hopes to make a life out of dairy farming, but that wasn’t able to happen for the couple. On Jan. 4, 2019, the couple sold their herd due to the downturn in the dairy economy. When they sold their cows, they knew they needed a plan to handle the turn of events. Jack LaValla, who worked at Riverland Community College at the time, gave tips on what to do. One thing LaValla said was to sit down and run what-if scenarios. Darienne also had different ways to look at the situation. She said that when it comes to farms, there is the emotional side and the business side, and in order to make the farm work, you have to look at the business side of things.

Dairy endeavor starts early for Mallow By the age of 18, Ann Mallow was milking her own herd alongside her parents, Joe and Karen, of Ixonia, Wisconsin. She started to grow her herd at the age of 14, when she was gifted two calves for her birthday and also bought a bred heifer with the money she received. Mallow had her own freestall barn, feed, bulk tank and milk check. She only shared the milking parlor with her parents. Compared to her parents’ herd, Mallow had better components, which gave her milk check a bump in price. When Mallow said she wanted to make a career out of dairy farming when she was 14, her parents were supportive. They also were there every step of the way if she needed help. New year, new milk market Robert Pierce, of Darlington, Wisconsin, searched for a new company to ship his milk to after he was told he would be losing his milk market. Shortly before Thanksgiving in 2018, Pierce and 15 neighboring farms were told this news. Pierce did not waste time trying to nd a new market for himself and the others as well. After doing research and making many phone calls, Pierce successfully found new markets for the other producers but not himself. He continued to make phone calls. The Thursday before Christmas, he was able to reach a Dairy Farmers of America eld representative who told him they would take his milk if he could get a Grade-A permit. This is exactly what he did.

10 years ago A womanʼs world Judy and Kalie Klaphake could be found taking care of the cows on a farm near Albany, Minnesota, while their husbands, Jeff and Joe, managed a custom harvest company. Neither of the women had much experience with cattle, and it was a bit of a learning curve. But, they got it done. Kalie took care of most of the computer work, while Judy did most of the bookkeeping for the dairy and custom work. Even being in the hospital could not keep Kalie from helping on the farm. While she was away, she checked on the robots and cattle on an iPad her family brought her. She helped with herd health over the phone. Giving the greatest gift The importance of family ran deep in the Burg and Bertram families. It was put to test in 2013, when Sherry Bertram donated one of her kidneys to her brother, Rick Burg. Bertram had a farm near Spring Hill, Minnesota, with her husband, Randy, and also worked a job off the farm at the local school. Knowing her brother would do the same if the roles were reversed, there was not a doubt in Bertram’s mind on what she had to do. To celebrate a year after the surgery, Bertram and Burg went out to eat together, and Burg gave her a snow globe of an angel with an inscription that read, “Thank you for the greatest gift. 1-31-13.” Turn to A LOOK BACK | Page 5

20 years ago Schlangens credit common sense methods for low SCC Dan and Jolene Schlangen, of Eden Valley, Minnesota, had been working to care for the farm that Dan’s father, Tony, had started. Tony was killed in a car accident in 1997, leading to the Schlangens quitting their jobs to help with the farm and buying it in 1998. They attempted to live out Tony’s goal for the farm of attaining a low somatic cell count. In 2003, they had an average SCC of 53,000 and kept getting it lower. The main thing they gave credit to was keeping the cows on a schedule and keeping the herd comfortable. They also mentioned using common sense when it came to milking and care techniques.

Peters family builds parlor, manure handling system Roger and Kris Peters, of Tyler, Minnesota, installed a new parlor and manure system to their barn and were satised with the results. Roger said one of the biggest things was being able to milk a cow without having to squat or do repetitive motions that were hard on his body. They had hopes this system would also allow them to keep their hired help longer since the work would not be straining. Around the same time the parlor went in, they also installed a sand separator so they would not send sand to the eld with the manure. This helped them reduce costs on their farm because they did not haul in as much sand.

with the eldwork like working the hay crop, hauling manure or running the chisel plow. Why did you join FFA? FFA is full of opportunities, meeting new people and learning valuable skills that are useful later on in life. I thought it would be a fun experience, and it denitely is.

Tell us about your farm and family. I grew up and still live on my family’s 200-cow dairy farm right outside of Harmony, Minnesota, with my six siblings and my parents, Kevin and Kelly Biel. Our farm consists of Holstein and Jersey cows, chickens, goats and a lot of barn cats. My siblings and I feed the calves after school and on the weekends if school extracurriculars aren’t interfering. We help our dad and grandpa, Bob,

What is your role in the chapter? Being on the chapter’s ofcer team, we plan for the year and try to ll the year with exciting activities the chapter members will enjoy. The most important events we plan for are our fundraisers, FFA week and the chapter banquet. I try to get new members in FFA because they are missing out on a lot of opportunities. What FFA contests do you compete in? I compete in Dairy Cattle Evaluation & Management and recently started Poultry Evaluation. I have found a lot of success with both and am

What do you look forward to most in the upcoming FFA year? I am looking forward to judging at the state convention with my qualifying poultry team. This is my rst year poultry judging, and it is a fun experience to be able to make it to state, especially since it is my last year in FFA, so I can go out with a bang. I am also looking forward to our chapter’s FFA banquet in March. There is always good food, but it’ll be sad that it is my last one. How has FFA shaped you as a person? FFA has taught me a lot of skills. Because I have done dairy judging, I strengthened my communication skills and problem-solving skills. I have also learned leadership throughout my years in FFA. What are your duties on the farm? My duties on the farm consist of feeding the calves and helping with eldwork. What are your future plans? This fall, I plan to attend the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities to study agricultural communication and marketing. I like to advocate for agriculture, and this major will help me promote the industry to a higher extent.

ConƟnued from UDDER STUFF | Page 10 USDA to reopen signup for Continuous Conservation Reserve Program The U.S. Department of Agriculture is accepting applications for the Continuous Conservation Reserve Program. The Farm Service Agency encourages agricultural producers and landowners interested in conservation opportunities for their land in exchange for yearly rental payments to consider the enrollment options available through Continuous CRP, which also includes the Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program offered by FSA partners. Additionally, producers participating in CRP can apply to re-enroll if their contracts will expire this year. To submit an offer, producers should contact the FSA at their local USDA Service Center by July 31 in order to have an offer effective by Oct. 1. To ensure enrollment acreages do not exceed the statutory cap, FSA will accept offers from producers on a rst-come, rst-served basis and will return offers for approval in batches throughout the year. Additionally, producers with acres enrolled in Continuous CRP set to expire Sept. 30 can offer acres for re-enrollment. A producer can both enroll new acres into Continuous CRP and re-enroll any acres expiring Sept. 30. University of Minnesota seeks dairy manager study input The University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine invites you to participate in the Management Technology Perceptions study. Your insights as individuals in managerial positions within a dairy operation are invaluable to understanding the use of automated/precision technology in the industry.
