STALL PLOW BEDDING EXTRACTOR

3 Reasons to own a Messer stall plow vs. auger style extractor: Performance - Cleans over 2x more stalls per hour= less labor cost and time cows are displaced from their beds. Hygienic - Scrapes cleaner and removes more contaminated bedding which in turn lowers your somatic cell count which equals better milk production and lower mastitis cases. Steady progress produces lifelong results Davis family stands the test of time By Abby Wiedmeyer abby.w@dairystar.com

WISCONSIN DELLS, Wis. — LaVern and Cheryl Davis have been farming together for 47 years. They started with six Jersey heifers and 18 acres. Today, with the help of their son, Chris, they milk 200 cows and farm approximately 900 acres of owned and rented land. Their farming career has been full of challenges, which they faced head on and managed to grow from. “It was just the two of us milking in the stanchion barn at rst,” LaVern said. “One thing led to another to make it easier.” LaVern purchased the farm in December 1976, while he and Cheryl were engaged. At that time, the farm consisted of a house with no indoor plumbing or heat, a barn with wooden stanchions and outbuildings. Just before getting married, they purchased the rst six heifers. With no vacuum pump or pipeline to speak of, the couple was creative in order to get chores done. “We’d run the hose in the barn and milk the cows.” LaVern and Cheryl were both working full-time jobs at the time, and LaVern decided to expand the dairy operation and quit his job. A bulk tank was added, and in 1979, a 40-stall addition was put on the barn. They were then milking 57 cows. Their fourth wedding anniversary brought the rst of LaVern’s health issues with an aneurysm on his aorta. He had heart surgery after planting the corn, and a friend’s 16-year-old brother came to live with them to help with the farm. Later, they built a solar-sided heifer shed, which was the rst new building. Then in 1988, they experienced the worst drought of their career. The corn was planted in June, and the eld was so dry and sandy that the seed did not germinate. “It nally rained in July,” LaVern said. “All of a sudden, this corn was growing.” Until that point, they had been harvesting corn with a corn picker. Since there were no cobs that year, they built a silo, chopped all the corn and made silage for the rst time. After building the silo, the Davises added a lean-to for the heifers and a machine shed. The lean-to was later torn down and replaced with a bigger one, while various updates continued to progress, such as a commodity shed and shade for the cows. In 2000, they began building the parlor. This was constructed as an attachment to the old stanchion barn. A herringbone parlor was installed in an effort to make life easier. A freestall barn and manure pit were also added

around the same time. Unfortunately, LaVern fell ill a second time. “He was so sick he couldn’t sweep up the feed,” Cheryl said. “He didn’t eat, and he couldn’t stay awake.” After seeing many doctors, he was nally diagnosed with Wegener’s granulomatosis. It is a rare autoimmune disease that they treated with steroids. A few years later, in the fall of 2004, LaVern got sick again with a mass on his heart. He spent three weeks in the hospital while the doctors were unable to diagnose the mass. He was treated with multiple remedies in the hope that something would work. Eventually, months later, he was diagnosed with Q fever. It is another rare disease for which he is still being treated. Meanwhile, Cheryl continued to work full time off and on the farm and still managed to visit LaVern while he spent three weeks in the hospital. LaVern’s dad was helping while Chris was in college at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville. Chris has been managing the farm full time since his return from college. Under his management, the farm has moved to using bags for silage storage and hiring custom harvesters to do the cropping. Irrigation systems were installed after another drought in 2012. The systems cover 250 acres of corn ground. The crop insurance adjuster led a zero-yield report in 2012, and after putting in the irrigation in 2013, the crop yielded 175 bushels to the acre. It has continued to prove a worthwhile investment. Turn to DAVIS | Page 5

ConƟnued from DAVIS | Page 4 “This year you can really tell on the elds where the pivot goes,” Cheryl said. “The corn just goes right down.” As cow numbers grew and LaVern’s health declined, the family relied on employees. Their rst full-time employee came in 2005 and is still with the family today. There are three other employees who also help the operation continue. Cheryl also continues to help with the milking each day. “(Our employees) are so wonderful, and that’s part of the reason why we’ve been able to have as many animals as we have,” Cheryl said.

“They do such a wonderful job taking care of them.” With a reliable set of employees and their son at the helm, LaVern and Cheryl said they feel God has provided for them, and they enjoy each other’s company while supporting their son’s efforts on the farm.

ble. Ofcially, the source of the re is undetermined. Stamschror lost four tractors, two skid loaders and their attachments, a grain drill, a 1977 GMC Sierra pickup, and basically all of his tools. He had also stored eight pallets of seed there worth $70,000 that he needed for spring as a dealer for Byron Seeds. “I did learn one thing; you don’t park all the stuff in one shed,” Stamschror said. The most difcult item to lose was the pickup. Stamschror’s grandson, Jayden Ihrke, had spent the last two years restoring it and was planning to paint it soon and put tires on it. Stamschror needed a skid loader to feed his grass-fed cows their forage and do chores that day, so a neighbor loaned him one. Later, Plainview Agri Power in Plainview and Hammell Equipment in Chateld loaned him skid loaders

All of the equipment was found on the internet, and some was even purchased sight unseen with a tractor coming out of Ohio and a skid loader coming from Missouri. Stamschror was insured, which helped with costs. However, when the re happened, he had been only about two weeks away from increasing his insurance values because of the inated prices then for used equipment. He purchased three tractors to replace the four he lost with

tors to replace the four he lost with the insurance money from them and the grain drill. Even with that, he said they were still $30,000 out of pocket. The seed was insured. It was replaced except for the varieties that had been sold out. The insurance claim was the second in the last several months Stamschror had made, with the rst being to replace his barn roof after a small tornado affected the area in December 2021. About six months after the re, when their insurance was set

to renew, the Stamschrors were notied that they had been dropped and that they had 10 days to nd new coverage. The destroyed building had just recently been converted into a heated shop before the re. After the re, the Stamschrors added onto and remodeled a previous shop and put up a plastic hoop barn on the cement pad from the destroyed building to park equipment in.

60-65 members, from year to year Eden Valley, Minnesota Meeker and Stearns counties Tell us about your chapter. We are a seventh grade through post-secondary FFA chapter. We put an emphasis on preparing our students from all backgrounds, regardless if they come from production agriculture, for their future through premier leadership, personal growth and career success. We also let our students be the driver to their FFA journey. Some members choose to do one or two events throughout the year while others choose to do as many as possible. Many of our members compete in contests, attend leadership conferences, complete degree and award applications, and help plan and conduct events throughout the year.

Eden ValleyWatkins Chapter

How does your chapter volunteer in the community throughout the year? Our chapter always conducts a corn drive event where we work with local farmers to raise funds to help support True Friends, a nonprot organization providing life-changing experiences that enhance independence and self-esteem for children and adults with disabilities. In addition, we adopt a farm family through the Minnesota Department of Agriculture every year where we buy Christmas gifts for a farm family in need. We also help at county fairs, dinner on the dairy events and the Adopt-a-Highway program. What fundraisers does your chapter do throughout the year? We have two major fundraisers. Our most signicant is our annual fruit sales fundraiser which takes place over October and November. Our chapter also has a 43-apple tree orchard that we manage where we sell apples to the local community in September and October.

What are the biggest events of the year? In the fall, it’s our corn drive and our chapter cookout. Every fall, our oldest FFA members collect corn for True Friends. In order to include all members, we host a fall cookout at the corn collection site. All students get a chance to see what corn drive is about, enjoy a great grilled lunch and have fun being together. Another big event we do in the fall is our annual fruit sales fundraiser. During the spring, our two biggest events are drive your tractor to school day during NaPHOTO SUBMITTED tional Agriculture Week and attending the The Eden Valley-Watkins FFA Chapter adopts a secƟon of a Stearns County highway where members Minnesota State FFA Convention. pick up the road ditch every fall and spring.

The Derek Dreier Legacy Showcase celebrated young Dairy enthusiasts at the 2023 Carver County Fair. The Carvey County Dairy Youth Scholars was started in 2019 as a way to celebrate and honor Derek Dreier. Derek was an avid dairy exhibitor for many years at the Carver County Fair. He was a role-model and mentor for many. Sadly, Derek passed away in 2017 at the age of 28. In its inaugural year the Carver County Dairy Youth Scholars awarded a total of $2,800 to nine youth dairy exhibitors. The program continues to grow and provide an opportunity to publicly celebrate the achievements of the youth involved with dairy projects. In 2023 the Derek Dreier Legacy showcase was able to award 19 scholarships for a total of $7,250. This wouldn’t be possible without the generosity of the sponsors and the enthusiasm they show towards the dairy industry.

What is unique about your chapter? Our FFA alumni chapter sponsors root beer oats for all of the schools in our district. These are served during our National FFA Week celebrations. Our students have an opportunity to work with and learn from our alumni. When was your chapter founded and how has it evolved? The chapter was founded in 1955. Our chapter was historically a one-teacher program. Junior high FFA membership was added in 2008. We expanded to two teachers in 2015 and added a third teacher in 2022. This allows us to personalize each individual FFA member’s experience. We focus on personal growth, premier leadership and career development. We are now a very well-rounded FFA chapter and agriculture department.

The fourth annual Dairy Summit is Nov. 15 at the University of WisconsinPlatteville. This free, public event will be held in-person on campus with virtual options. The summit features the newest research and outreach funded by the Hub, along with farmer and legislative perspectives, and facility tours. There is an optional pre-conference reception the night before. Reducing Market Risk is a farm nance program, offered by University of Minnesota Extension, targeted toward increasing resiliency in dairy producers in complex markets. This program is open to all livestock producers Dec. 5 in Little Falls, Minnesota. The program will begin at 10 a.m. with two speakers over two hours, continue with a catered lunch, and wrap up with two nal speakers. The afternoon’s speakers will conclude at 2 p.m. The free meal, sponsored by Farmers and Merchants State Bank, will be offered at noon. Registration for the program and meal can be completed through https://z.umn. edu/ReducingMarketRisk2023. Farmers, agronomists and conservation professionals from around the state of Wisconsin are invited to attend the new, Wisconsin Water and Soil Health Conference, Dec. 7-8 at the Kalahari Conference Center in Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin. The WWASH conference is building upon the legacies of two pivotal events, the Wisconsin Cover Crop Conference and the Discovery Farms Conference. This all-encompassing conference will cover all things water quality, cover crops and soil health with access to two full days of learning opportunities from three distinguished keynotes and real-world examples from farmer panels and roundtable discussions. A full agenda preview, registration information and sponsorship opportunities can be found at go.wisc.edu/WWASH. SDSU Extension will host a three-day estate planning and farm succession conference on March 5, 12 and 19, 2024 at the SDSU Extension Watertown Regional Center (1910 W. Kemp Ave., Watertown, SD 57201). Each day begins at 10:00 a.m. and concludes at 4:00 p.m. No matter the size of your estate, there are wrong, right, and better ways to create a family legacy. Learning about the different methods can help farmers and ranchers create a legacy they are proud of. This legacy includes the transfer of the operation, but also the family relationships they leave behind. The agenda covers many methods used to transfer land and assets to the next generation and pass on personal property. It will also help families set goals – minimize taxes, provide for long-term care and provide equally for heirs while continuing to operate. Registration includes meals and materials for all attendees. Early registration is encouraged and closes on February 19. For more information, contact Heather Gessner, SDSU Extension Livestock Business Management Field Specialist.
