From Ireland to South Dakota Drumgoon Dairy welcomes students to farm

LAKE NORDEN, S.D. – Irish eyes were smiling in South Dakota this summer when the Elliott family welcomed four interns from Ireland to their dairy farm near Lake Norden.

The interns included Sarah Armstrong of Cornafean, County Cavan; Niamh Rice of the Cooley Peninsula in County Louth; Roisin Scully, of Clonaslee, County Laois; and Ciara Byers of Ballyjamesduff, County Cavan.

Drumgoon Dairy is owned by Rodney and Dorothy Elliott and their family. The Elliotts moved from Ireland to South Dakota in 2006 and built a 1,400cow dairy. They have since grown their operation to 6,500 head.

“We have hosted interns since 2009,” Dorothy said. “Our interns, who must have a farm background, currently come to us through (The Ohio Program). Our goal is to show them how we dairy here in the U.S.”

The Ohio Program is an international exchange program under Ohio State University’s College of Food, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences.

“It’s a great networking opportunity and something that would be a big plus on a resume,” David Elliott said.

Rodney and Dorothy’s son David is the farm manager at Drumgoon Dairy.

Armstrong said the work at Drum-

goon Dairy is a continuation of the work she was doing back home. She was working with a farm relief company, covering shifts or providing an extra hand.

“I have gained some valuable experience on these farms which has since persuaded me to pursue a career in dairy,” she said.

While Armstrong’s home farm raises beef cattle, that was not always the case.

“Growing up, we milked cows, and I have fond memories of standing in the parlor while my grandfather and father brought in the cows, tightly followed by our dog, Shep,” Armstrong said.

Armstrong is studying sustainable agriculture at Dundalk Institute of Technology.

When Armstrong came to America, she had to adjust to South Dakota’s climate.

“While it was nice to nally be able to go outside in a T-shirt and shorts, unlike Ireland where a hat could be worn most days, it often got difcult and sweaty to work in,” Armstrong said. “It was also fascinating how often there would be thunderstorms although I was never too impressed to be awoken at 3 a.m. with a ash in my window.”

Each intern at Drumgoon Dairy is furnished with a car. They are encouraged to experience the culture.

“The landscape was truly beautiful, especially when we four took a six-hour road trip to Mount Rushmore,” Armstrong said. “From the atlands, hills and the Badlands, there (were) some truly magnicent views along the way.”

beef farm, is employed on a 120-cow dairy and is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in agriculture at Dundalk Institute of Technology.

“I thoroughly enjoyed my time in South Dakota,” Rice said. “It was like nothing I have experienced before and a world away from my life in Cooley.”

Rice said she gained experience and

dence in many areas of farm work and brought what she learned home.

“I felt very welcomed, and it was great to work with so many people from various countries and cultures,” she said. “The vast landscape and the sheer scale of the farming operations were

Rice said one of the biggest contrasts in farming between Ireland and South Dakota are the methods for feeding and housing dairy cattle.

“At home for a lot of the year the animals are kept predominantly outside due to the ideal weather conditions for grass growth,” Rice said. “However, in Drumgoon, the animals are kept indoors all year long due to the extreme weather conditions and temperatures.”

Rice also noticed some cultural differences.

“I had some interesting conversations about politics and gun control, learning a lot about the different political parties and the benets they bring to different states,” she said.

Scully, who is in her nal year at University College Dublin where she is studying animal and crop production, lives on her family’s farm that includes 300 beef cattle and 150 dairy cows.

“I loved my time in America,” Scully said. “I found South Dakota to be a big culture shock but am glad I stuck it out.”

Scully has lived in rural Ireland her whole life but found the seclusion of South Dakota hard to settle into and described it as a new level of detachment.

“I loved the work and the staff on the farm were great, but after work and on the weekends, I was surprised by how little there was to do for young people in the area,” she said.

Scully and the other interns went to towns in the area, and Scully said the nightlife was much calmer than at home. Scully said Friday and Saturday nights are met with crowded bars in Ireland, but in South Dakota, they may have been the only ones present the entire night.

“We made our own fun,” she said.

Scully also noted differences in farming practices.

“Irish farms are much smaller, and we farm outdoors for the most part of the year,” she said. “It was interesting to see how animal and herd health was in excellent condition even though some might argue that animals who never go outdoors are not happy.”

In Drumgoon, cows are under 24-hour surveillance by trained staff; whereas in Ireland, Scully said the farmer might only check the cows in the eld once a day.

Byers lives on her family’s 200cow dairy farm. She is in her nal year at University College Dublin where she is majoring in animal and crop production.

“One of the greatest challenges was rstly agreeing to travel away from Ireland for the summer,” Byers said. “This was my rst time away from home for such a period of time, and at the time, that was a very daunting thing. However, I can conrm once I stepped foot onto the farm in Drumgoon, I instantly felt welcomed, and it very quickly became a home away from home.”

PHOTO SUBMITTED Ciara Byers, one of four Irish women who interned at Drumgoon Dairy this summer, is eager to learn about the latest dairy farming technology. She got her chance when she worked in Drumgoon Dairy’s robo c milking facility.

Another challenge while on the farm was the language barrier. Drumgoon Dairy has around 50 employees, some of whom speak Spanish.

“When I arrived, I could only say my name in Spanish and ask someone how they were,” Byers said. “I quickly realized I will need to learn some words to be able to communicate better with

this is something I want to try to improve and keep a tighter eye on back home,” Byers said. “I have also gotten such a great insight into the American ag sector as a whole, and it really has given me food for thought.”

Byers said she has gained an unbelievable amount of knowledge from her time spent at Drumgoon Dairy that she will bring with her as she continues her career in the agriculture industry.

“I have made some wonderful friends that I will cherish, and the memories which I created along the way will be memories and stories that I will reminisce on for a long time to come,” Byers said.

Dorothy said she hopes the time at the farm leaves a lasting impression on the students.

“The interns all bring something to our farm,” Dorothy said. “Hopefully, they all take something back to their homes.

Friday night lights before Saturday morning chores

Bortle balances football while farming

WHITEHALL, Wis. – Football has been Tyler Bortle’s hobby ever since he joined the team in sixth grade. That hobby led to a college and semi-professional football career. Now, years later, Bortle is staying involved in the sport through coaching high school football.

“I enjoy the game of football and everything it has to offer,” Bortle said. “I like to see the way the kids develop and grow.”

Bortle and his dad, John, milk 50 cows in a swing-6 parlor near Whitehall. Bortle handles the milking while John mixes feed and feeds the cows. Along with cooking a team meal every Thursday, Bortle’s wife, Callie, stays home with their three children and does calf chores and picks up the slack when Bortle’s coaching duties call. John lls in for milking as well and also serves as an assistant in the booth at football games.

Every week is a balancing act between running the farm and keeping up with coaching duties. On Mondays, the team watches lm of the previous Friday’s game and does stretching and conditioning workouts. On Tuesdays, the team wears full pads and analyzes the next opponent. Bortle plays quarterback on the scout offensive team. The rest of the week is spent getting ready for the Friday night game.

“We work hard all week,” Bortle said. “And then Friday night comes, and we play hard and sacrice for each other and grow as a team. I enjoy that.”

Bortle said the sport has been even more enjoyable throughout his life with the support of his dad, who always encouraged him to try sports. John made it to every game and managed to keep the farm running. When Bortle was in high school and the team had away games, John hired someone to milk the cows. John was paid to drive the team’s bus to the games.

“He did a lot of work by himself, but he always made the games,” Bortle said. “He always joked that he got paid to watch me play and still had a little to pay the milker.”

Bortle attended college at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse so he could continue to play football. John continued

to attend games. The rst time the team traveled to Texas, Bortle was of the understanding that John would not be able to attend the game because it was so far away.

“I remember getting off the bus to go to the game and turning around in the parking lot and there he was standing,” Bortle said. “That was pretty cool.”

After college, the career turned semiprofessional when Bortle played for the Chippewa Valley Predators for many years. He also spent a couple years playing for the Minneapolis Warriors, with teammates who had previously been involved in the National Football League.

Along with defeating some previous league champions, the team was also invited to Daytona to play in the national title game. They ended up being crowned in 2021 as the best in the nation.

“That was interesting getting to meet a lot of different guys with a lot of backgrounds,” Bortle said.

When he returned home, he knew he wanted to keep football in his life but was also taking a more active role in the dairy. When his alma mater had a position for a coaching job, Bortle saw his opportunity.

“They brought me in and said, ‘We want you to come in and do this,’” Bortle said. “I was shocked.”

Bortle consulted with his dad before accepting the position. John assured Bortle they would make it work between chores and eldwork so Bortle could coach.

Bortle said coaching can be like farming where things do not always go as planned. He uses the trials as a teaching opportunity for the kids to become more exible.

“It’s organized chaos kind of like farming,” Bortle said. “I always tell the guys if something goes wrong that we’re going to tighten our belts up and we’re going to move on.”

Bortle said his favorite thing is showing up to practice and seeing the kids wide-eyed and eager. He encourages the team to be respectful of each other and practice kindness.

“I always tell them I have expectations of all of them, but the No. 1 things are effort and just being a good human being,” Bortle said. “Just don’t be mean to each other. That doesn’t take a lot.”

While there is a lot that goes into making the balancing act work, Bortle said he enjoys coaching and farming with the support of his parents and his wife.

“Sports don’t build character; it reveals it,” Bortle said.

Tell us your favorite experience of Grace helping with chores. Keith: One of my favorite experiences about Grace helping with chores is watching her pick up new skills with running all sorts of equipment. She always learns new skills fast and always asks if she is doing it right and ensures a quality job. I can trust her in running machinery from hay production to tillage and most everything in between. Kurt: There have been many great experiences with Grace but one of my favorite is watching her be meticulous about cleaning and taking care of the animals. She has great attention to detail and always makes sure the animals are taken care of.

What qualities does Grace have that benet the farm? Keith: Grace has many qualities that benet our farm from working with the animals and helping in the elds. The biggest quality she has for me is that she is respectful to the machinery, and I can trust her in operating the machines. She always makes good decisions and always assures me she will do the best job possible. Kurt: Grace is always willing to help her dad or me whenever we need her. She always stays until the job is done and never leaves us hanging. Her attention to detail helps because I always know my animals and machines are being treated as best as they should.

What are your responsibilities on the farm? I have many responsibilities on our family dairy farm that spans from barn chores to eldwork and machine maintenance. I help with day-to-day tasks such as maintaining a clean environment inside of our milking barns, mixing feed, feeding the animals and milking cows. I also help clean and bed other holding areas for our animals and monitor the animals for any ailments. Overall, I do all aspects of working with the dairy herd and the associated processes with running a dairy. For example, the eldwork that I do includes tillage, cutting hay, raking

forage products, hauling silage and gravity boxes, maintaining tractors and other machinery, and helping manage the rotations of crops in elds.

When did you begin helping on the farm?

When my sister was born, I was 5. My dad would take me to the farm to give my mom a break. When I was that little, I would do small tasks like pushing in feed, picking eggs, getting the cows up for milking and feeding all of the calves. As I got older, I was given more tasks and responsibilities. By age 12 or so, I was milking, feeding and helping with most of the chores. At 14, I started doing eldwork. My rst task was raking hay. From there, I learned many types of eldwork such as tillage practices, fertilizing and rotating crops, forage production and grain production. I am now almost 18, and I do every dairy chore and basically every eld chore.

How do you balance school, extracurricular activities and farm chores? I am passionate about my education and always try my best to get good grades. This has made it easy for me to excel at school. My parents have always had a strict rule. I must have all of my homework done before I can help with chores or in the eld. I am only in two extracurricular activities. I am the Holdingford FFA president and a Stearns County Dairy Princess. These organizations and programs support and promote agriculture and

the dairy community. This makes it easy for me to be in these along with doing chores because I can use my experiences to help me be better in those activities. My parents are also supportive of me being in these programs and always want me to go to events and not worry about the farm. I am passionate about these programs, so I am lucky to have such supportive parents who push me to be my best and not hold back because of the farm.

How has working on the farm shaped your character? Working on the farm has shaped my character in my ways. One of those ways is my work ethic and time management. I always like to plan out my days and make sure I get everything I wanted done. I also like having a clean facility for our animals, and I often scrape manure off the allies or tops so our animals stay healthy and hygienic. The biggest thing our farm has shaped me into is being a passionate advocate for the agricultural and dairy community. Through the two programs I am in, I am

able to take all of my dairy and agricultural experience and show my support and skills to the community. Without the farm I would not be able to do the stuff I am doing now. So many of the skills I have or will learn will be kept with me for my life and make me a prosperous and successful adult.

What do you love most about farm life?

Being able to work together as a family. My whole family has a common goal of having a successful dairy farm, and this makes it enjoyable to work with them because we are all looking for the same end goal. I also love being able to take my experience and educate people on how ethically run dairy farms are and how they are benecial to our communities. My all-time favorite chore on the farm would have to be eldwork. I like that I can be alone in a tractor but also be able to help my farm create quality feed and other products. Overall, I like every part of our dairy farm and am grateful for the opportunities it gives me and the feeling of accomplishment after a day’s work.

What is one thing you have learned from working alongside your family and your employer? From birthing a calf to maintaining machinery and how to rotate crops and so much more. The multitude of things I have learned from working with dairy maintenance, milking cows, calves and replacement heifers, and eldwork is hard to describe. One of the biggest things I am grateful I have learned is the eldwork aspect of the farm. When I started doing eldwork, I started with just raking hay, but now I am helping with the whole process of cutting, raking, baling, transporting and wrapping. I love running machinery, and I am grateful my dad taught me how to run machinery.

What are your future plans? To attend Ridgewater College in Willmar. I am planning on an associate degree in agribusiness

Grant applications open

Dairy Business Builder is open for grant applications. Dairy Business Builder is looking for farms who want to diversify their on farm activity and/or creating value added products. Application materials, including a free webinar with tips for a strong proposal, are now available online at cdr.wisc.edu/dbia. All applications are due by 5 p.m. Nov. 10. Successful applicants will be notied by Dec. 15.

The funding is administered by the Dairy Business Innovation Alliance, a partnership between the Center for Dairy Research and the Wisconsin Cheese Makers Association. The awards aim to support recipients in diversifying on-farm activity, creating value-added products, enhancing dairy byproducts, and creating or enhancing dairy export programs. The program also offers technical assistance to dairy farmers and processors in participating states.

Funds available to update livestock operations

Minnesota livestock farmers and ranchers seeking to improve their operation are encouraged to apply for the Agricultural Growth, Research, and Innovation Livestock Investment Grant program. The Minnesota Department of Agriculture anticipates awarding approximately $1.3 million using a competitive review process.

Applications for the grant will be accepted until 4 p.m. Nov. 15. A second round will open only if the MDA does not receive enough quality applications in this rst round. The MDA will issue a second RFP if there are any remaining funds by spring 2023. Go to www.mda.state.mn.us/business-dev-loans-grants/ agri-livestock-investment-grant for more information.
