Shrink feed shrinkage

reach a goal of only 5 percent shrinkage. The value of all feed saved at 5 percent was nearly $175,000 per year, based on 2012 feed prices, compared with the 12 percent, or nearly $420,000, of lost feed the previous year. That means the dairy loses $245,000 if it does not put the effort into reducing shrinkage. These losses occurred on a 1,000-cow dairy and included the cost of the feed for the milking herd, dry cows and heifers, but not the calves. Shrinkage comes in many forms, and many factors result in feed waste. Feed shrink can represent from 5 to 15 percent of the total feed cost on the dairy, and wet, as well as the more expensive, ingredients represent the greatest concern for farm managers. High feed costs and low milk prices increase the importance of reducing the overall feed cost. Lowering feed shrinkage is an economic opportunity for nearly all dairies of any size.

Calves and cleanliness a vital health relationship

Raising healthy calves is a challenging and rewarding job. Calf raisers are responsible for the dairy herd’s future, the next generation of milk cows. Minimizing death and disease losses in the calf herd can save hundreds of dollars per replacement animal raised. Sometimes the most obvious steps are the easiest to overlook because we assume the work is being done just as we intended. One of the most vital components is sanitation. Just rinsing a nursing bottle rather than cleaning it thoroughly is very tempting. We gure that all the germs can be killed with a good soak with bleach. The bad news is that, in most cases, bleach actually cannot kill the germs. The recipe is straightforward. (You can nd guidelines from the Dairy Calf and Heifer Association’s Gold Standards.) One of the rst steps is: Wash

“THE R80

equipment after every use, including bleach in the wash water. Soak with bleach and hot water occasionally to back up an effective washing program. The proper soaking dilution of household bleach is about 2.7 cups in 5 gallons of water. If equipment is completely clean, chlorine bleach does have an excellent kill rate for bacteria. Notice the words completely clean. If a biolm exists on the interior surface of a nursing bottle, for example, it acts as a buffer between the bleach’s active ingredient (sodium hypochlorite) and the bacteria. According to Sam Leadley, calf and heifer management consultant at Attica (N.Y.) Veterinary Associates, biolm can develop easily on equipment that is not cleaned completely after every use. He notes that washing feeding buckets every morning and then just rinsing after the afternoon feeding allows protein, fat and lactose particles to stick to the surfaces. Then bacteria cement themselves to equipment surfaces using these residues. Once the bacteria are cemented onto the equipment, they produce organic compounds to protect themselves. These lms often are so thin that we can’t see or feel them. However, be assured that they can be present unless you have a good four-step washing procedure that is followed after every use. Here is what is recommended as an essential fourstep cleaning procedure: • Use a lukewarm prewash rinse. • Brush the equipment, using hot water, soap and bleach for the wash. • Use an acid rinse. • Allow the equipment to dry thoroughly between uses. At low levels, these bacteria are not necessarily harmful to young calves. However, you frequently nd high bacterial concentrations in milk, milk replacer or colostrum that comes in contact with bottles, tube feeders and pails that are cleaned just by soaking them in bleach.

On most dairies, feed costs will represent the largest single expense. With escalating feed prices, feed is eating up what otherwise could be pretty good milk prices. Now more than ever, controlling shrinkage is imperative. What is shrinkage? It simply is dened as the amount of feed delivered or raised on the farm that is not consumed by the cattle for which it was intended. If you don’t measure the shrinkage, you can’t manage it. And the larger the dairy, the more important this factor is. Perhaps the single most imBy J.W. Schroeder portant advance in this area has been the adoption of on-farm NDSU Extension scales for incoming trucks and feed-mixing equipment. Also, signicant advances have been made in the last decade in computer software to help producers track feed-mixing operations and changes in inventory. Feed shrinkage is caused by many factors, including delivery weight errors, wind, birds, rodents, tires, tracked feed, cattle tossing feed, silage bunker losses, feed refusals, bunk heating and spoilage, moisture losses, mixing errors, scale accuracy, push-up blades, comingling of ingredients, feed wasted by feeders and drives, silage fermentation, feed bunk management, plastic management, moving/storing feed and water damage. What is typical? You always are going to have some shrinkage, but the goal should be to minimize it. For example, in a recent study shared by an Arizona dairy, the staff measured the following shrinkage during a 60-day period: mill-run feed of more than 16 percent, dry distillers grain of more than 9 percent, commercial soybean meal product of more than 9 percent, alfalfa hay of more than 7 percent and corn silage of more than 16 percent. The nutrition consultant for this dairy helped it

FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 16, 2012 Official DHIA Holstein Cattle

NOTE: Mid American Auction Co. and Henslin Auctions are excited to bring you this premiere Central Minnesota dairy dispersal auction. This is a tremendous opportunity to purchase high quality, high producing, farm-fresh herd replacements in volume. Rosewood Dairy purchased the original facility from the Schmiesing family along with the existing herd that was established in the mid 1950’s. The Schmiesing herd was well known throughout Central Minnesota and the Rosewood management has continued this great tradition producing one of the most functional high producing herds in the area. This herd has been on official DHIA for many years with current herd average at an amazing 3X 28,525 milk, 3.9% 1037 fat, 3.1% 875 protein, 90 lb. tank average, records to over 50,000 pounds of milk, individuals producing over 150 pounds per day. SCC runs from 200,000 to 240,000. Many are recently fresh with several cows and heifers due near or soon after sale time. The herd will contain approximately 10% Brown Swiss X Holstein composite cows, along with a few Red & White Holsteins. Entire herd is headlock broke, housed in free-stall facility and milked in parallel parlor. The herd is artificially bred using exclusively select sires with limited use of good Holstein bulls as clean up. Sires and service sires include, but not limited to: Oman, All That, Macguinnes, Landscape, Billard, Styx, Snake and Fork, among others. An extensive herd health program has been in place for several years through Dr. Moe with the Stearns Vet Clinic. All cattle have been vaccinated and boosted seasonally. Hooves trimmed regularly with onsite facility. Cattle will be TB tested prior to auction. With the volume of dairy cattle offered on this auction, lots may vary from one to four head per lot. Any lots containing multiples will be sorted to age, freshening, production and quality. If you are in need of young, extremely well uddered, farm-fresh high producing official DHIA herd replacements, please mark this date on your calendar and make plans now to attend the Rosewood dispersal. Catalogs with complete breeding, freshening and production information sent upon request. Please phone (320) 352-3803 or visit www.midamericanauctioninc.com.
