Cow health progresses at Prairieland Dairy Fresh-animal issues plummet after installing cow monitoring system By Stacey Smart

stacey.s@dairystar.com

BELLEVILLE, Wis. – A dramatic reduction in freshcow sickness and improvements in overall cow health is where the Fahey family is seeing the biggest bang for their buck with their new cow moni-

toring system. Since installing CowManager in February 2020, they have witnessed how the tool helps keep their herd on a healthy track, resulting in time savings and reduced drug use. Metritis cases are down 26%, ketosis cases are down 15%, retained placenta cases are down 50% and abortion

The Fahey family – (front, from leŌ) Jim and Sheryl, (back, from leŌ) Chuck, Dalton, Tyler, Nick, and Mark – milks 1,500 cows and farms 3,300 acres near Belleville, Wisconsin. The Faheys’ farm, Prairieland Dairy, was featured during a Virtual Farm Tour at World Dairy Expo Oct. 2 in Madison.

cases are down 21%. Furthermore, dead cow numbers have dropped 4% and sold cows have decreased 9%. The trend continues to go down, as sick cows are caught much earlier. “(The system) tells us everything we need to know about a cow,” said Chuck Fahey of Prairieland Dairy during a virtual tour of the farm Oct. 2 at World Dairy Expo in Madison. “Before, we were using milk weights from the parlor to

see if cows were down on milk 10%, 20%, etc. But by the time you see that, cows are really down and out.” Fahey said the cow monitoring system can detect a sick cow within six hours. “This system is unbelievable,” he said. Prairieland Dairy is a fourth-generation farm run by brothers Chuck and Mark Fahey and their parents, Jim and Sheryl. Chuck’s son, Dalton,

and Mark’s sons, Tyler and Nick, also work on the farm. The Fahey family milks 1,500 cows and farms 3,300 acres near Belleville. Cows are milked three times a day in a double-24 parallel parlor. The farm’s rolling herd average is 31,000 pounds of milk with 4.2% fat, 3.1% protein and a somatic cell count of 92,000. Cows average Turn to FAHEYS | Page 4

Prairieland Dairy has received the quality award for Dairy Farmers of America fat and protein eight years running as well as the Top 5 National Corn Growers award. In 2014, the Faheys built an 864-stall cross-ventilated freestall barn to accompany the farm’s original freestall barn with overhead fans built in 1999. Cows are bedded with sand twice a week, and low-stream sprinklers help reduce heat stress. “Cow comfort is everything to us,” Chuck said. “We concentrate very highly on that. These cows are our lives. Without healthy cows, we wouldn’t be around.” Mark agreed. “Cows come rst on our farm,” he

We’ve added an extra three to four months to a cow’s lactation because she’s so comfortable.” Sand is recycled through a sand-separation system to be reused under the cows with 99% of the bedding being retained. “We used to use a truckload of sand per week,” Mark said. “Now, we basically don’t buy any – maybe just a half dozen loads per year. The current pregnancy rate at Prairieland Dairy is 33%. Average days open are 103 with 75% of the herd pregnant at 125 days in milk. Beef semen is used strategically on cows. “We used to do an Ovsynch protocol but couldn’t get good enough results so we went to a Double Ovsynch program for rst service and our pregnancy rates shot up from 24% to 32-36%,” Chuck said. “We utilize (our cow monitoring system) to breed repeats.”

The Faheys use their system to monitor activity, temperature and rumination. Prairieland Dairy was one of the rst farms in the U.S. to use the system’s transition cow features which can help predict weeks ahead of calving which cows are going to be most susceptible to illness post-fresh. “We can target some of those animals with probiotics and hopefully prevent them from having health events,” Chuck said. “I think the rst 10-14 days of a cow’s lactation is the most important – it sets her up for her whole lactation, and if we can target weeks ahead, that’s really impactful.” The Faheys have taken a new approach to monitoring fresh cows that requires less physical observation and has proven to be a time-saver for the family. “We used to be in by our fresh cows every day for the rst 10 days,” Chuck said. “Then we went on the system and it’s so much simpler now. From day 1 to day 10, I can see what they’re doing and how they’re

eating just by looking at my phone. We can compare her to other cohorts to see if she’s way down on feed intake, and if she is, then we go check on her. Maybe she needs some liquids. This strategy minimizes the drugs we use tremendously.” The Faheys started out using their system on fresh cows only. “We liked it so much that we began using it on everyone,” Chuck said. “The system is user- friendly and fun to have. It gives you the alerts and tells you which cows to look at so you don’t have to spend hours each day guring it out yourself.” The Fahey family has come to rely on their cow monitoring system to deliver the information they need to enhance their farm’s success. “We’re trying to get our cows as healthy as possible, and it’s incredible how much you pick up,” Chuck said. “We love this system. It’s worth every penny.”

He shows interest in the cattle. You can really tell he has a love for the cows and that’s good to see. What qualities does your son have that benet the farm? He knows how to work. We all know he’s not going to be a farmer for life, but he still helps, shows willingness and gets to work without anyone begging him to help. Questions for youth: What are your responsibilities on the farm? I get anything done that needs to be done. I clean the barn, feed the cows, get the cows from the pasture and do anything in the eld. When did you begin helping on the farm and why? I began in third grade when we started farming. I came because my brother and sister were coming, so I tagged along and helped. How has working on the farm shaped your character? It’s made me learn to accept to work hard. When I was a little kid, I didn’t like coming to the farm. It was just a bunch of hard work, and I didn’t want to do it. Over the years, I accepted there are things you have to do, so I just work hard and get it done then move on to the next thing. What do you love most about farm life? I really like the cows. Each one has a different personality. I just sit and

WHICH BARN IS BEST FOR YOUR HERD?

AmeriFLECK Dairy Genetics is the first and only lineup of Geneseek/Igenity tested Dairy Fleckvieh sires born, raised, and collected in the United States. The bulls we are offering have been selected from multiple generation top production and type cow families. They have been bred to produce high production, moderate frame-size cows with emphasis on udders, feet & legs and calving ease.

FLECKVIEH STRENGTHS Birds just love this barn. The webs in these trusses are easy nest areas for birds. They also restrict air flow which leads to poor ventilation and moisture buildup in the building.

Starwood Rafters Uses Pole Sheds • Free Stalls Riding Arenas Pavilion Shelters Machinery Storage

The arched rafters create a more open barn allowing better ventilation. Also since there are no open webs in the trusses, there are no places for birds to nest.

• Healthy, hardy and very adaptable to different geographical and climatic conditions. • Easy calving, good fertility and a long productive life • High performance potential for milk and beef • Very good conformation of udders and feet and legs • Medium body size which is ideal with respect to longevity and feed efficiency

No other breed combines both milk and beef traits in such a strong way as the Milking Fleckvieh.

• Spans up to 72 ft. • Up to 12’ spacing depending on the load you desire • Bird nesting control • Better ventilation & visability • No feed alley post obstruction • Additional ceiling height
