STALL PLOW BEDDING EXTRACTOR

3 Reasons to own a Messer stall plow vs. auger style extractor: Performance - Cleans over 2x more stalls per hour= less labor cost and time cows are displaced from their beds. Hygienic - Scrapes cleaner and removes more contaminated bedding which in turn lowers your somatic cell count which equals better milk production and lower mastitis cases. This is based on a cleaning interval of every six months. Cost Effective - Quick ROI as plow has no moving parts to maintain and costs two thirds less.

“My Somatic Cell count used to be 150,000 and kept gradually raising and I would say ‘We can deal with that’ until it got to be about 300,000. After we used the Messer Stall Plow it lowered to about 180,000. That’s a reduction of around 120,000!“

An individual perspective Conniff uses personal narratives to weave book on immigration, dairy farms By Amy Kyllo

amy.k@star-pub.com

MADISON, Wis. — A conuence of necessity and shared values forms the material of a new book titled “Milked: How an American Crisis Brought Together Midwestern Dairy Farmers and Mexican Workers.” “Milked,” which was published in 2022, was written by Ruth Conniff. Conniff is a journalist and current editor in chief for the Wisconsin Examiner of Madison. “This story really shows how farmers in this country and the agricultural workers from Mexico are really in the same boat,” Conniff said. “They’re basically two groups of rural people who are under pressure from the same global economic forces.” The main economic force Conniff refers to is the pressure for farms to expand in order to stay economically viable. “(North American Free Trade Agreement) and other global trade agreements … really helped propel the get-big-

or-get-out trend in agriculture and forced farmers to expand their operations very quickly and hire workers for the rst time,” Conniff said. “That same phenomenon also pushed a lot of subsistence-level Mexican farmers off of their land and sent them north looking for jobs.” Friendships formed between the bosses working side by side with their employees. Conniff said the farmers and workers found they both had agrarian backgrounds, enjoyed working with animals and had cultural similarities. “The thing that these farmers and these rural workers from Mexico found in common is this kind of optimistic can-do attitude,” Conniff said. “That’s what drives them, and they’re making it work in these really difcult conditions.” Conniff said qualities often considered American are actually shared with Mexico. “They are hardworking, uncomplaining, keep their heads down and have amazing, incredible dedication to their families,” she said. The book uses personal

Topics approached include immigration policy, political leanings, pressure to expand, the idea of economically sustainable farms, racism and local food, all through the lens

of the individual people who populate these interconnected themes. “I felt like that structure of telling these individual personal life stories of farmers on this side of the border and workers from that side of the border ... was an interesting way to shed light on something that’s a big policy issue, but it’s really in the end about individual peo-

ple,” Conniff said. Conniff rst was inspired to write the book in 2018 after reading an article about a family of undocumented dairy farm workers packing up and going back to Mexico because of fear of deportation and being separated from their children. Turn to CONNIFF | Page 3

Conniff said their story, which she includes in the book, illustrates how many Mexican workers come to the U.S. to work in order to send money home. “They kind of personalize the story of circular migration — of not having an American dream, (but of) having a Mexican dream and saving money in this country to pay for that,” Conniff said. Conniff spent the next several years interviewing farmers and their immigrant workers. A look back at 5, 10 and 20 years ago 5 years ago Making more cheddar The Associated Milk Producers Inc. processing plant in Paynesville, Minnesota, underwent renovations that allowed it to produce more cheese as demand continued to grow. Cheddar cheese consumption had hit an all-time high in 2017 at more than 11 pounds per person per year. Production in the AMPI plant began the week of Oct. 22, 2018, with seven new cheese vats allowing for an increase of daily cheddar cheese production from 240,000 pounds to about 300,000 pounds. Plant processing capacity of milk increased from 2.4 million pounds to 3 million pounds per day. Achieving a 46,000-pound herd average Ever-Green-View Farms near Waldo, Wisconsin, reached a rolling herd average around 46,000 pounds of milk by fall of 2018 with a target to hit 50,000 pounds within ve years. Tom and Gin Kestell and their son and daughter-inlaw, Chris and Jennifer, milked 90 registered Holsteins three times a day in a tiestall barn. The Kestells identied forage and feed quality as vital contributors to milk production. The farm’s 140-pound tank average and 3.9% fat meant cows were producing about 5.5 pounds of butterfat daily. The Kestells’ nutritionist, Dr. Steve Woodford of Nutrition Professionals Inc., said that was like making a stick of butter every hour of every day. Starting small leads to prosperous dairy business Isaac Nelson of Sleepy Eye, Minnesota, was awarded the National Prociency in Dairy Entrepreneurship at the 91st National FFA Convention Oct. 26, 2018, in Indianapolis, Indiana. Nelson, the son of Brian and Jill Nelson, grew up on Olmar Farms near Sleepy Eye where his family milked 150 registered Holsteins. Nelson had a Supervised Agricultural Experience project in dairy production. At the time, Nelson was a student at the University of MinnesotaTwin Cities where he studied dairy production and animal science with hopes to work in agricultural technology and grow relations within the dairy industry before returning home to take over the family farm. Minnesota herd numbers rapidly decline as market concerns remain Doug and Brenda Stangl were among 28 Minnesota farm families who exited the dairy industry in October 2018. The state had already seen a loss of 162 dairy farms since the beginning of that year. The Minnesota Department of Agriculture’s October 2018 report said the state had 2,914 operating dairy herds remaining — 2,689 Grade A and 225 Grade B farms. Two factors in the decline were the low milk price and the struggle to nd labor. The Stangls said they had received more money for their milk when rst dairy farming in the late 1980s near Pierz, Minnesota, even though they were producing 400 pounds less milk per day then.

The Stangls had begun custom raising heifers. They had also kept their youngstock and were continuing to crop farm.

10 years ago Midwest hit by LP gas shortage Many parts of the Midwest were hit by a shortage of liquid propane gas in November 2013, shutting down grain dryers and putting the brakes on the fall’s corn harvest. A wet autumn combined with record crops led to heavy harvesting all at the same time across the Midwest. LP inventories had not been built up enough by suppliers, who now were trying to get propane trucked in at record speed. In response to the crisis, the governors of several Midwestern states including North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa and Wisconsin signed executive orders that temporarily lifted the restrictions on the number of hours propane truck drivers could spend behind the wheel. Committed to dairying Excavation took place Oct. 22, 2013, and a 68- by 114-foot barn was expected to be completed by the end of the year at McComish Farms near Shullsburg, Wisconsin. Tim and Kim McComish and their son and daughterin-law, Joe and Amber, were rebuilding after a re in September had destroyed the barn in which they milked their herd of 200. The 60-year-old gambrelroofed barn had been retrotted with a swing-12 parlor eight years prior. Although the barn, a silo and various equipment had been a total loss in the re, the group of cows that had been in the parlor for milking was saved. Neighbors showed up to help the family divide and transport its herd to three farms for temporary housing and milking. The destroyed barn was insured, but only for what it was worth. The McComishes estimated that the new barn, with a new double-10 parlor, would cost about three times the value of the old barn.

and Heitzman said the winnings would allow for improvements on their farms, neither of their families had plans to sell their cows. Both women said they intended to keep their jobs as lunch servers. Brothers get every third week off, thanks to smart schedule In the fall of 2003, the Horstmann brothers were enjoying plenty of something most dairy farmers do not have — time for hobbies, vacations and relaxation. 20 years ago Cash cow comes home for two Minnesota farmers On Oct. 27, 2003, Barb Nelson and Mary Heitzman were part of a group of 16 women from Holdingford, Minnesota, who boarded a charter bus bound for the Minnesota State Lottery headquarters in Roseville. The women all worked together in the town’s school district. Nelson and Heitzman worked as lunch servers but were also dairy farmers. Nelson and her husband, Dwain, milked 35 cows, and Mary Heitzman and her husband, Jerry, milked 60 cows on their respective farms. As part of the group, Nelson and Heitzman were on their way to claim their share of $95.45 million they won with a winning lottery ticket from a pool of tickets the women had purchased together. Each of the women were slated to receive an estimated amount of $2.1 million, or $134,000 for the yearly annuity, depending on the payment option. Both Nelson and Heitzman said they needed time to let their winning set in before making any decisions about what to do with the money. Although both Nelson

sota, and they had devised a schedule that allowed for time off work. The schedule contained a careful rotation that had each brother milking cows for two weeks, followed by one week off. The Horstmanns milked 82 cows at the time. Although the week off often involved other chores, especially with farming 1,200 acres, the off week could be used to t in shing trips, cruises or simple down time. The schedule started Monday nights, with one brother milking at night, another brother milking the next morning and the third brother having that week off. The next week they would change schedules.

Goodhue 90-100 members Goodhue, Minnesota Goodhue County Tell us about your chapter. Goodhue is a small agricultural community surrounded by large ag companies and organizations. This has a big impact on our students’ opportunities and their exposure to the industry. Our graduating class sizes range from the low 40s to high 50s, with a membership of 90-100 members every year; that is a lot of our school that is actively involved in our chapter. That gives you a feel of our outstanding ag community we are surrounded by. We are blessed to have an active agricultural community. Our chapter is proud of where we come from and loves to work with our local businesses and farmers, involving not only our students but all of our community in all that we do. Our community is vital to our success. How does your chapter volunteer in the community throughout the year? We are fortunate to have such a supportive town. We have many events we participate in to give back. We start in the fall with a eld meal and corn drive event.

The chapter receives their plants at the beginning of February and sells them during Mother’s Day weekend. While we collect corn and monetary donations to be donated to the True Friends Organization, we also deliver over 160 hot meals to local farmers, right in the eld. In the fall and spring, we also clean ditches of a major highway in our county. As we round the corner to spring and summer, we participate in the breakfast on the farm event. Our role is to help promote the dairy industry by supplying event volunteers and the petting zoo. We also provide a petting zoo and agricultural-related activities at our local National Night Out event, hosted by our local police department. During county fair week, we participate in volunteering hours to run the pork booth and the children’s barnyard. What-

ever we can do to lend a hand, we step in. There are many more volunteer opportunities we participate in, but I don’t want to write a book. What fundraisers does your chapter do throughout the year? We have a few fundraisers that we participate in every year. Our largest fundraiser would be our fruit sale in the fall. Our members step up to make this fundraiser a success. The funds from this event allow our members to experience reduced or no costs for workshops, travel, registration fees, conventions and so much more. In the

ConƟnued from FFA | Page 6 spring, our large fundraiser is our plant sale. Our community was supportive in the building of a brand new, large greenhouse ve years ago. Our plant science and FFA students grow beautiful annuals and veggies beginning in February with a sale on Mother’s Day weekend. We have created a growing program and typically sell out on our rst day of sales. This has been a great project for our students, so much is gained knowledge-wise each year. What are the biggest events of the year? We have many events we host in a year, but what we are most excited about and passionate about is our annual Ag Day. This event started three years ago and has expanded to be much more. We are excited to open this event to other school districts this coming spring. This is a day of agricultural education for our entire school district. The goal of the event is for students to be exposed to all the opportunities in this industry. In the morning, our high schoolers participate in workshops or agricultural tours. Our students have taken workshops on livestock judging, y shing and careers in construction. Tours were of a manufacturing business, a dairy farm and Ellingson. Our elementary-aged students travel through stations in the industry. This includes livestock stations, grain demonstrations and tractor row. Our middle schoolers and high schoolers make their way back to the career and college fair in the afternoon. We typically

have 25-30 agricultural businesses and colleges represented from our community. Students get to network and make connections. We end our day with a tractor parade as this day also serves as our Drive Your Tractor to School event. What is unique about your chapter? Our passion for agriculture, education and our community. Goodhue has a rich history, and it is an honor to carry that on. When was your chapter founded and how has it evolved? Our chapter was chartered in 1955; this will represent our 69th year as a chapter. Goodhue has evolved signicantly from when it began back in 1955, yet we still hold true to our agricultural roots and foundation. Our membership in the last 15 years has grown signicantly and even more recently in the last six years. We went from an average-year membership in the mid 40s to now where our average-year membership is averaging in the low 90s. The events we offer and the impact on our community has changed. We have put community at the forefront of what we do, utilizing the citizens and organizations of Goodhue, working as a collective to push agricultural education.

but my older brother will be joining soon, now that he has graduated. Why did you join FFA? I joined FFA in seventh grade, and in the years previous, I always helped my older brother do fruit sales — so that got me started in wanting to participate in FFA early on. However, lots of my family were members when they were in high school, so that also started my urge to join. We also had an amazing ag teacher at the time, but she left to pursue a career on her family’s dairy. Thankfully, we were blessed with another amazing teacher in her place. Tell us about your farm and family. I am a fthgeneration dairy farmer at our family-owned dairy farm in Goodhue, Minnesota, called Green Acres. On our farm, we milk 173 cows and have many more calves and heifers. We produce most of our crops ourselves but occasionally have to buy some from surrounding farmers. We are organic, so it makes buying corn or hay a little more expensive. Our farm started as one, but we branched out to three farms back in 2009 — all of which are separate now — and we help the others only if they need it. My dad and uncle are the primary owners,

What is your role in the chapter? I primarily take care of the nances of the chapter. I always make sure that every transaction we have is documented so that we know how much money we have at any given time. I also make sure that any upcoming events are ready to go and are set up so that when the time comes, we are ready. What FFA contests do you compete in? I have started competing in poultry evaluation and have also participated in the best informed greenhand contest, small animals contest and livestock judging.

What do you look forward to most in the upcoming FFA year? This year, we have many big things planned, but I am most excited for the national convention. I also am excited for our annual Ag Day as well as our newest event which is our mock crash. We decided to do this to inform people of the dangers of being distracted or being under the inuence while driving. We also decided to do this right before prom. How has FFA shaped you as a person? I have met so many amazing people through this organization as well as have made great memories. It denitely has turned me into a group worker as well since not one person could do all of the work that goes into our events. It has taught me to do my share and always nd a way to take weight off of others and help them get their portions done too. Another big part is leadership and doing my best to get others involved and grow the same passion I now have. What are your duties on the farm? My primary duties involve cleaning the parlor at the end of milking at night as well as milking cows whenever I am needed. In the summer, I help by raking hay and doing farm work all around. Whether that be working on tractors, xing something in the barn or cleaning something else up, I’ll be there to help when needed. What are your future plans? This is my least favorite question since I truly am not entirely sure. I am a person that has many temporary hobbies, always looking for something new and different, but one thing I have looked at a few times is something in the correctional eld.

Ryan Eipers Jr. (front, from leŌ) and Eva Eipers; (back, from leŌ) Niki Eipers, Emily WilleƩe, nanny, Olivia Eipers and Ryan Eipers stand by their freestall barn Nov. 2 on their dairy farm near Dodge Center, Minnesota. The Eiperses milk 144 cows and farm 300 acres. When do you help with chores? Every night. What is your favorite and least favorite chore? My favorite is doing my chickens probably because I get to check their eggs and sometimes get to use the faucet to ll the waterers. My least favorite is watering both of the big hutches because it takes a long time. The one has a really big tub and sometimes it goes slow.

What is your favorite animal on the farm? The cows. My favorite cow is Bubbles. She was born on my birthday, and she looks like her mom, which her name is Monkeyface. What do you want to be when you grow up? A dairy farmer, to keep the farm alive. If you had your own farm, what would it look like? There

would be a lot of sheds with a lot of Case IH tractors, a TMR mixer, silage wagons, manure spreader, a couple skid loaders, a baler, a couple of utility vehicles to drive around in, a truck, a cattle trailer, a back hoe, a couple chicken coops, hutches and a atbed trailer for when we have to haul stuff. It would have 100 cows, ve ducks and 20 chickens. Turn to KIDS CORNER | Page 9

ConƟnued from KIDS CORNER | Page 8 What is your favorite thing to do on the farm in the fall? Either going combining or messing around on the wrapped bales. We just mess around, jump on the bales and run on them. Tell us something you recently learned in school. I learned how to multiply fractions so that they can be added. What is the best thing about growing up on a dairy farm? Probably messing around on wrapped bales, feeding calves and wearing boots a lot. What is your favorite dairy treat? Cheese sticks and white milk. I drink white milk a lot, and we get a lot of cheese orders, so I get a lot of cheese sticks. When do you help with chores? Every other night. What is your favorite and least favorite chore? My favorite chore is feeding bottles because I like feeding the calves, and they are cute. My least favorite chore is feeding chickens because it is boring.

Eva Eipers 8 years old Third grade

What is your favorite animal on the farm? A baby chick because they are cute, and they peep a lot. What do you want to be when you grow up? A teacher because then I can correct papers. If you had your own farm, what would it look like? There would be cats, cows, dogs, horses, chickens and ducks. For tools, there would be hammers, wrenches, screw drivers, Case IH tractors, a TMR mixer and a chopper. The building would be a pole shed. What is your favorite thing to do on the farm in the fall? Jump on the trampoline. I jump the leaves off. Tell us something you recently learned in school. Multiplication. What is the best thing about growing up on a dairy farm? I like feeding cows because I want cows so that I can make milk. What is your favorite dairy treat? Chocolate milk. I like it because cows make the white milk and they put chocolate in it.

Patented US 7,810,450 B2

Ryan Eipers Jr. 3 years old

What is your favorite and least favorite chore? My favorite chore is xing tires. My least favorite is cleaning the house. What is your favorite animal on the farm? A cow, because they moo and poop. What do you want to be when you grow up? A farmer.

Riding along in the tractor during corn silage. What is the best thing about growing up on a dairy farm? I like working with Mom and Dad. What is your favorite dairy treat? White milk.
