Striving for excellence McCulloughs’ barn home to nine EX-94 cows By Stacey Smart
stacey.s@dairystar.com
JUDA, Wis. – On Oct. 10, the McCullough family added two more cows to their EX-94 club, bringing the total to nine. These cows make up nearly 20% of the herd at Rock-NHill-II Holsteins, and all but one is homebred. “It’s a nice accomplishment, but I actually get more excited about a 3-year-old scoring 91 or 92,” Chris McCullough said. Chris and Kathie McCullough and their children, Rachel and Brian, milk 50 cows and farm 185 acres near Juda. Registered Holsteins are at the center of the McCulloughs’ world where constant improvement has been the name of the game since 1994 when Chris and Kathie started Rock-N-HillII in partnership with Chris’ parents, Mike and Marcy. Smart breeding decisions helped accelerate the quality of their herd which now contains 37 Excellent and 17 Very Good
cows earning a BAA of 113.2. “I didn’t do this by myself,” Chris said. “It’s very much a family effort.” Rachel, 22, and Brian, 20, share their parents’ passion for the registered Holstein and devote countless hours to helping care for the farm’s cattle. Rachel returned to the farm full time two years ago after completing the farm and industry short course at the University of WisconsinMadison. “I would put Rachel up against any cow man,” Chris said. “She has a great eye for cattle and knows every detail about our cows by heart. If I want to know when a cow calved or when she was last bred and to who, I ask Rachel.” Kathie agreed. “Reproduction is Rachel’s specialty,” Kathie said. “She’s very into breeding.” Brian is working on an electrician apprenticeship while also helping on the farm. In addition, Brian’s tting skills are being utilized by high-prole farms where he clips cattle for the showring

After their most recent classication, the McCulloughs added 14 Excellent cows
to their herd. Cows scored Excellent are in the majority at Rock-N-Hill-II, with threequarters of the barn boasting a score of 90 points or higher. “The rst time we scored here, we had one Excellent from my dad’s place and three Very Goods,” Chris said.

Colleen was our rst 94-point cow. She helped put us on the map.” The oldest EX-94 gal on the McCullough farm is 12-year-old Casey. Cows at Rock-N-Hill-II age well as many of the best scored cows in the barn are 5 years old and above. “Our goal has always been to improve, so to have that many EX-94 cows in the barn at once is a big deal to us,” Kathie said. Tall, long, angular, deep-bodied, large-framed dairy cows ll every stall of the barn. Pedigrees are stacked in this homebred herd where each cow’s placard reveals generations of rich type. In many cases, Excellent-scored cattle extend ve or six layers deep. “There are only two cows in the barn without our prex,” Chris said. The McCulloughs have bred 155 Excellent animals, including 25 cows scored EX-94 and one scored EX-95. Their philosophy of making each generation better than the last has proven successful in producing cows of this caliber. “Our goal is to make the daughter better than
the mother,” Chris said. “It’s hard to look at your best cows and say, ‘We need to x this on her.’ But, you can’t make the next generation better if you can’t gure out what’s wrong with the current generation. Just because you have a high-scoring or show-winning cow doesn’t mean she doesn’t have problems. Does she need more dairy character? Better feet and legs? We try to correct those problems with her next mating.” Type is not the only thing important to the McCullough family. Cows have to earn their keep too. The farm’s rolling herd average is 25,118 pounds of milk, 1,020 pounds of fat (4.1%) and 794 pounds of protein (3.2%). “There is no such thing as a dry and open cow around here,” Chris said. “Although a cow may score high, she doesn’t get a lifetime pass. When her time is up, she has to go.” When it comes to making breeding decisions, Chris said they keep things simple. “There’s never more than a half-dozen bulls in Turn to MCCULLOUGHS | Page 5

Casey is the oldest EX-94 cow on the McCulloughs’ farm and epitomizes the type of animal the family strives to breed. our tank,” he said. “We carry two for dairy, two for strength and two in-betweeners. Just because a bull is three points on type doesn’t mean he’ll make the kind of cows we want.” In the early years, the McCulloughs used a lot of Durham and Linjet, which Chris said built a good foundation for the farm. Now, the family is using bulls like Doc, Tatoo and Thunderstorm, along with a little Addison and Showtime. “Our best calves right now are out of Thunderstorm, and our best young cows are sired by Saturn,” Chris said. “My dad taught me a lot about breeding and mating, and I’m also fortunate to call many of the best cow people in the world my best friends – whether breeders, judges, tters, A.I. people or others working in the industry. Also, I’ve been
privileged to judge a lot of really good shows, and I pay attention to what’s working and what’s not.” Chris stressed the need to breed cows to good bulls and care for each animal to the best a farm’s facilities will allow. “There are no secrets in this business,” Chris said. “You just have to shut up and listen. You can learn a lot by going to shows and sales and talking to fellow breeders you respect and admire. There are a lot of herds we look up to and respect.” As the McCullough family continues to build a barn of superb type, Chris believes there is more work to do. “I’m proud of our accomplishments, but we’re not done yet,” he said. “There are always things to improve.”

Rohan Dairy Enhances Reproductive Performance with the Parnell F360 Guarantee By Jaclyn Krymowski for Parnell
From left to right: Rohan Dairy Herdsman Caleb Hamm, Owner Cory Rohan, and Veterinarian Dr. Val Baumgart.
Parnell™ developed the F360 Guarantee to showcase the capability and confidence of the company’s full fertility suite. With a guaranteed 1-3% increase in a dairy’s Rolling Herd Average Pregnancy Rate in 12-months or a 5% rebate back on all product purchases, Rohan Dairy in Bear Creek, Wisconsin, enthusiastically put this program into work. Doing so, they incorporated all of Parnell’s fertility treatments, GONAbreed® and estroPLAN®, on-farm training and the Fertility 360 Report analysis to take their herd to the next level of reproductive performance. They were among the highest performing farms enrolled in the program and named one of Parnell’s 2021 winners for Excellence in Herd Fertility*. The farm is owned and operated by the second-generation farmer, Cory Rohan and his father, Tom. Dr. Val Baumgart of United Veterinary Service is the herd veterinarian and an integral part of implementing the F360 Guarantee. Before enrolling in the program, the farm used a 14-day PreSynch for their synchronization. Dr. Val explains this was chosen strictly for compliance reasons – an essential component of any reproductive program. “Our first service conception rate was certainly not where we wanted it to be, probably in the low to mid-30s most of the year,” she says. “We were recently able to switch to a double Ovsynch. (Now) even through the summer months, our first service conception rate has crept into the 50s.” One of the elements she attributes to this change is their new herdsman, Caleb Hamm. Caleb’s background as an A.I. Technician and his enthusiasm for implementing and compliance with protocols has helped increase herd fertility. Cory agrees, noting that their last herdsman was in his role for many years, and having a fresh perspective made it easier for the rest of the team to transition. “With our new herdsman coming in, that opened up a window as far as being able to change things without it being such a change for everybody else,” Cory added. Another significant component was increasing stringency on their “Do Not Breed” requirements. “I think we used to probably give some girls a few more shakes than they deserved,” said Dr. Val, “and that certainly contributes to changing our average days of milk and to making production more consistent and better.” With her veterinary experience, Dr. Val said she had a good understanding of the full scope that the F360 Guarantee had to offer and recognized that it was worth the opportunity, especially for Rohan Dairy. “The Rohans are just such a great, progressive young dairy that they’re easy to work with,” she said. “The program itself dug into transition cows, stocking density, foot health and body condition. We took a lot of little details into account that still make up a big portion of our conversations each day.” Having the aid of Parnell Territory Manager, Angie Ulness, was also a big driver of moving the program forward. “(Having) Angie’s knowledge and persistence to make us stick to the program made it more successful...Without her keeping the train on the tracks, maybe we wouldn’t have seen through it.” Something about the program that stands out to Cory is the cost savings. He recalls how their quarterly financial meetings used to find that their breeding costs were “always through the roof” and notably higher than the average of other farms. “I think at the end of the day, it just came down to that we were just breeding the cows too many times,” he explains. “Conception at first service has improved quite a bit and that’s huge.” Dr. Val adds that getting those first service conceptions also helped them improve their mating and breeding decisions, from the number of replacement heifers to producing those of a higher quality. “It just opened up so many doors that maybe we didn’t take the time to know that needed to be opened,” she says. “It’s easy in the producer world and the veterinary world to be overwhelmed with all of the to-dos. You might miss out on some of the opportunities that this program has brought to our attention.”
If your dairy wants to achieve results similar to Rohan’s, contact your local Parnell Territory Manager or apply for the F360 Guarantee at F360Guarantee.com. After college, Whiteaker took a herdsman job for Arlin Johnson who milked 160 cows near Kasson. While there, he took care of all the breeding, did more milkings, mixed feed and helped with eldwork. At the same time, Whiteaker bought a group of 20 2-month-old calves which he kept and raised at his dad’s place. Shortly after calving, he moved them to Johnson’s farm where they were milked. “He let me bring cows in and keep cows there,” Whiteaker said. “I also got a lot of knowledge in cropping and eldwork. I never had much knowledge in that growing up.” KATE RECHTZIGEL/DAIRY STAR Throughout the years, he continued to buy cows from other Adam Whiteaker looks over the herd’s DHIA records at his farm near Mantorville, Minnesota. Whiteaker’s biggest challenge starting on his own Whiteaker is thankful to have gained knowledge and hands-on work experience before starting his own has been nances. “Milk had just come down off the 2014 high and dairy farm. By working for area farmers, he learned was really low. I was just trying to make everything all how to treat and deal with sick cows on his own. “If I were to start on my own right away, I cash ow at once,” Whiteaker said. “But by working probably would’ve had to call the vet and have him with banks and people that I buy stuff from, they were willing to work with me.” out more often,” Whiteaker said. Seeing as Whiteaker only runs 40 acres for corn Whiteaker’s favorite part about dairy farming is genetics and breeding cows. He breeds his own cows silage, he also buys 70% of his feed. “I work with a neighbor who sells a lot of hay. and looks to develop higher type cows. He understands that I need hay, and I understand that he’s got hay to sell. We’ve got a good relationship,” Whiteaker said. “A lot of it also comes from the elevator.” In the future, Whiteaker plans to acquire more land and implement rotational grazing. “It’s just something I’m intrigued by,” Whiteaker said of the grazing system. When advising someone from the younger generation who is looking to get into farming, Whiteaker encourages them to closely evaluate their nancial commitment. “Keep your debt low and try to do as much stuff KATE RECHTZIGEL/DAIRY STAR as you can,” he said. “You save on having to call Adam Whiteaker’s herd of 60 cows is milked in a Ɵpeople to x stuff or have a vet out.” estall barn he bought from John Bierbaum in January 2021.

All about Annette
Wisconsin cow named Jersey Jug winner, intermediate champion By Danielle Nauman danielle.n@dairystar.com
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Registered Jersey breeders may look forward to walking on the green shavings of the Kentucky Exposition Center’s Freedom Hall in Louisville the rst weekend in November to take part in the All-American Jersey Show. To win a banner at any point throughout the weekend is something most dream of but only a few experience. The partnership of Kylie and Dawson Nickels, Travis Freson, Mandy Sell and Scott Stanford, all of Watertown, Wisconsin, experienced a high like none other during the 2021 All-American Jersey Show with their senior 3-yearold cow Homeridge T Annette EX-91 which claimed several banners. “We knew Annette looked really good, so we were really just hoping for the best,” Sell said. “It’s the Jug, so we were pretty nervous. We had been waiting for this day since we rst picked her up as a little calf and decided to enter her for this year’s Jug.”
Annette rst took the show by storm, winning the National Jersey Jug Futurity Nov. 7. The long-running National Jersey Jug Futurity is the richest class for dairy cows, dating back to 1954. In order to show in the futurity, animals must rst be nominated as calves. Then, additional nomination payments are made when they are yearlings, 2 year olds and the nal payment as 3 year olds. Fresh in July with her second calf, Annette sorted her way to the top for judge Brady Core, of Salvisa, Kentucky, and his associate Robert Teixeira, of Turlock, California. “What a beautiful class of cows we have here today, but this rst-place cow … she just blows me away,” said Core in his reasons. “She has a tremendous rear udder with crazy height and width. She’s got that openness and extreme Jersey style; and a beautiful head and neck with so much femininity and breed character.” While Annette may have stood out to the judges, she caused some anxiety for her owners standing at the ringside. “We were a little anxious

“Thankfully, Kylie and Annette are the best partners,” Sell said. “I was so glad to have Kylie on the halter. They really mesh well, and Kylie stays so calm with her, even when she’s challenging.” As the winner of the National Jersey Jug Futurity, Annette was not eligible to
compete in her class during the All-American Jersey Show Nov. 8, but she was invited to come back to Freedom Hall for the selection of the national show’s intermediate Turn to JERSEY JUG | Page 11

ConƟnued from JERSEY JUG | Pages 10 champion. Despite not placing her in the all-American show, Annette stood out to judge Ted DeMent, of Kenney, Illinois, and his associate Trent Kilgus, of Fairbury, Illinois, and was their selection for intermediate champion. “We are just thrilled with the group of cows we have out here, and the future of the Jersey breed denitely looks bright,” DeMent said. “We didn’t get to see this Jug cow in class, but she just oors you with that height and width of rear udder. And, that’s what does it for us today.” While Annette can sometimes be a bit of a handful, Sell said she always seems to know exactly what she needs to do to get ready and perform in the showring. “Despite being a little spunky like she was on Sunday, Annette really is such an easy-going cow,” Sell said. “She is really a dream come true.” Annette was bred by Homeridge Jerseys, Ferme Steingruber Senc., of East Farnham, Quebec. She is sired by Tower-Vue Prime Tequila. Her dam is an EX-90 2E Hawarden Impuls Premier daughter, and she has eight more generations of Very Good and Excellent cows behind her. Annette currently has four daughters: a March 2020 daughter sired by Dutch Hollow Oliver-P, who will sell in the Music City Celebration Sale held in December in Nashville, Tennessee; a July calf sired by Richies Jace TBone; and two September calves sired by River Valley Venus VIP. She also has a bull calf sired by River Valley Joyride. She is bred back, due in June 2022, to River Valley Victorious and will be entering an in vitro fertilization
program later this year. Annette will sell in the Vierra Dairy AMPLIFY Event Sale March 5, 2022, in Hilmar, California. Sell and her partners rst came to own Annette when she was a calf, purchasing her through a tag sale held at Lookout Farm in Canton de Hatley, Quebec. “(Stanford) and I wanted to buy a calf for my godson, Travis; something he could show and build a herd from with a good pedigree,” Sell said. At the time, Travis was 8 years old, too young to show as a junior at most shows. Sell and Stanford are longtime supporters of youth in their area. Annette was shown by their neighbor, Sam Pitterle, as a junior project. As a heifer, Sell and Stanford boarded Annette at the Nickels’ farm, and Kylie began showing her as a junior project when she was a yearling. When she calved in as a 2-year-old, the Nickels decided to purchase an interest in Annette. Winning is not something Annette is unaccustomed to. Earlier this fall, she was named the intermediate and grand champion of the International Junior Jersey Show at World Dairy Expo. She wrapped up the week being selected as the reserve supreme champion of the youth show. “So many people have helped us along the way getting Annette to where she is today,” Sell said. “It truly does take a village, and we have a great one. We are so thankful for the help of every single person who has been involved in getting her to this place where she could achieve what she has this year.”

DBIA announces Dairy Industry Impact Grant recipients The Dairy Business Innovation Alliance (DBIA), a partnership between the Center for Dairy Research (CDR) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and Wisconsin Cheese Makers Association (WCMA), today announced the four companies and cooperatives which, via a competitive review process, have been selected to receive Dairy Industry Impact grants totaling more than $600,000. The Dairy Industry Impact grant was designed to attract medium to large dairy companies to develop an innovative idea or tackle a challenge with the potential to advance the dairy industry. The Industry Impact program awards reimbursable grants ranging from $50,000 to $250,000 for USDA-eligible expenses related to a company’s proposed project. This is the rst cycle for the Dairy Industry Impact grant and the four companies listed below have committed to sharing their knowledge gained with the wider dairy industry. “These grants will help explore new waste treatment options for smaller cheese plants, help position dairy in the sports beverage category, expand the utilization of co-products, and enhance cheese export opportunities,” said CDR Director John Lucey. “The DBIA is committed to helping move our dairy industry forward.” “From new export initiatives to product development and innovative plant efciencies, the projects funded by the DBIA impact not only the recipients, but the entire industry,” said WCMA Executive Director John Umhoefer. “WCMA is pleased to help support dairy’s continued growth and modernization.” The Dairy Business Innovation Alliance is supported by funding from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and was created in the 2018 federal Farm Bill. In addition to the Dairy Industry Impact grant, the DBIA administers Dairy Business Builder grants to support small to medium size dairy enterprises and provides extensive online resources to support dairy businesses through webinars and technical assistance. 2021 Dairy Industry Impact grant recipients: Cedar Grove Cheese - Plain, Wisconsin Cedar Grove Cheese will scale up a model, liquid waste-to-fertilizer system for small dairy processors. This solution will convert wash water into marketable fertilizer, which is expected to be relatively affordable for small and medium size dairy plants. The project will result in recovery and marketing of nutrients from the bio-solids remaining after treatment of cheese plant wash waste. The common elements of technology and results will be shared with other food processors. GoodSport Nutrition - Evanston, Illinois GoodSport Nutrition will raise consumer awareness regarding the ability of dairy products to deliver effective hydration before, during and after exercise, opening the door for dairy products to access the $8.3 billion plus sports beverage market. GoodSport Nutrition’s international renowned experts will attend select sports health professional tradeshows to present scientic research behind dairy’s hydration properties and target decision-makers and inuencers such as registered dietitians, strength & conditioning coaches, and sports medicine doctors. Extensive sampling onsite aims to accelerate acceptance of dairy-based drinks as an excellent choice for sports beverages. This project will pave the way for further product development and entry of other dairy-based sports nutrition products and has the added benet of creating value for a dairy by-product previously considered a commodity. Milk Specialties Global - Eden Prairie, Minnesota Milk Specialties Global will evaluate the potential nutritional benets of a lowvalue dairy by-product in animal feed. If successful, the expected nutritional benets will create both a new market and higher price for commodity items. This will also incentivize the development of additional premium feed products to justify a valueadded price for what is currently a processing by-product. Milk Specialties Global will make the results of their research publicly available. Turn to UDDER STUFF | Page 13

Eligible project expenses include equipment purchases and physical improvements, and dedicated staff/contractor time. In previous rounds of this highly competitive grant program, funds have gone to stimulate urban agriculture across Minnesota, from Saint Paul’s East Side to Duluth and from Virginia to North Minneapolis. The MDA expects to award 50% of the available funds to projects located in or serving BIPOC communities. Applicants may request a maximum of $50,000 per project, and up to 100% of the total project cost may be covered by the grant. Up to half of the award may be requested as an advance. Proposals must be submitted prior to Thursday, January 13, 2022 at 4 p.m. Visit the AGRI Urban Grants web page for more information, including detailed information about how to apply. Funding for this program is made available through the AGRI Program, which administers grants to farmers, agribusinesses, schools, and more throughout the state of Minnesota. The AGRI Program exists to advance Minnesota’s agricultural and renewable energy sectors. Dinner Bell Creamery establishes National Butter Day Nov. 17, 2021, will mark the rst annual National Butter Day. Established by Dinner Bell Creamery®, National Butter Day is dedicated to celebrating butter as a food, appreciating butter’s long history, and honoring the storied tradition of buttermaking in the U.S. “The U.S. makes some of the best butter in the world, much of it produced right here in the Midwest. That alone is worth celebrating,” says Marshall Reece, Sr. Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Associated Milk Producers Inc. (AMPI), the dairy farmer-owned cooperative that launched Dinner Bell Creamery in 2019. “Then when you add in all the delicious ways to enjoy butter, you quickly realize one day to celebrate is barely enough!” According to legend, butter was discovered by accident some 9,000 years ago when a lonely Persian goatherd transported milk in animal-skin pouches along a bumpy road. As the milk sloshed back and forth it turned into butter. When the goatherd discovered the churned milk, he thought the milk was ruined. One taste-test later and… the rest is history. Today, the average American eats 6.3 pounds, or 25 sticks, of cow’s milk butter every year. Butter is a key ingredient in a variety of cuisines and is an essential ingredient in classic American baking. Butter is a staple food in most households, especially during the holiday baking season. “The U.S. is a global leader in butter production, but we rank 24th in butter consumption per person,” Reece said. “I see that as a challenge — we’ve got some catching up to do.” Americans are encouraged to celebrate National Butter Day by purchasing U.S.-made butter, cooking and baking with butter, and seeking out butter-rich treats. National Butter Day is being celebrated on social media with the hashtag: #NationalButterDay.
WHICH BARN IS BEST FOR YOUR HERD?
Birds just love this barn. The webs in these trusses are easy nest areas for birds. They also restrict air flow which leads to poor ventilation and moisture buildup in the building.
Starwood Rafters Uses Pole Sheds • Free Stalls Riding Arenas Pavilion Shelters Machinery Storage
The arched rafters create a more open barn allowing better ventilation. Also since there are no open webs in the trusses, there are no places for birds to nest.

Get to know Emma Bangart of Stratford, Wisconsin
Emma Bangart Parents: Rick and Peggy Bangart Bangart Farms LLC Stratford, Wisconsin Marathon County 120 cows Senior at Marsheld High School 17 years old Parents: Tell us your favorite experience of your daughter helping with chores. During the summer, when Emma is home from school, she is always willing to help on herd health day. She enjoys helping with record keeping by taking over the clipboard for pregnancy checking. She expresses an interest in the health and well-being of the herd. What qualities does your daughter have that benet the farm? She is kind of a perfectionist. When it comes to doing a task, we know it is going to get done properly. Youth: What are your responsibilities on the farm? My responsibilities on the farm include feeding calves, scraping heifer pens, and helping with vaccinations and herd health. I also run cows that did not milk in the past 12 hours or completely milk out on all quarters into our two DeLaval robots. I complete registration papers and care for the daily needs of my own small herd of Red and White Holsteins on the farm. During the school year, I only help with evening chores, but in the summer, I help with both morning and evening chores. When did you begin helping on the farm? I began helping my grandma feed calves when I was 6 years old. I began working with my grandma to pass the time while my parents milked the cows, resulting in my newfound love for the newborn calves. I started with simple tasks such as preparing feed buckets, feeding bottles and providing fresh water to the calves each night. I eventually took on more tasks as I got older. How do you balance school, extracurricular activities and farm chores? I am involved in both 4-H and FFA, holding numerous ofcer positions throughout my years. I am
DANIELLE NAUMAN/DAIRY STAR
Emma Bangart works on her parents’, Peggy and Ricky Bangart’s, 120-cow dairy in Marathon County near Straƞord, Wisconsin. Bangart is a senior at Marsheld High School. also a member of the National Honor Society and Wisconsin Junior Holstein Association. I am employed at a veterinary clinic where I work for a couple of hours after school before coming home for evening chores. I am able to balance school and work by planning ahead. I know when I am going to work or when a meeting will be, so then I schedule around chores. How has working on the farm shaped your character? Living and working on a farm has taught me perseverance. It has taught me to have compassion and resilience. No matter how challenging a task is, I have learned that I must push through and complete the job, both on and off my family’s farm. What do you love most about farm life? I love watching the birth of a newborn calf. Something so ordinary causes a rush of excitement in me as the newborn calf takes its rst breath. It is so rewarding to pull a live calf after the cow had a difcult calving.
What is one thing you have learned from working alongside your parents? I have learned the value of hard work and determination from my parents. Their work ethic inspires me to work harder each and every day. It is this value of determination that they have instilled in me that will allow me to achieve my goals. &
What are your future plans? I plan on attending the University of WisconsinRiver Falls in the fall of 2022, majoring in dairy science. I aspire to one day become a large animal veterinarian.

NOTE: This is a huge auction with a wide variety of good clean equipment being offered. The Kruse family has farmed in this area for over 60 years with Kraig being an integral part of the dairy since he was old enough to milk cows. Now due to a debilitating health issue, Kraig has sold the dairy farm and will sell the following equipment at auction. Mid-American Auction Co. is honored to be selected to conduct the Kruse farm dispersal auction. The farm machinery has been well maintained with major pieces shedded. This will be a live auction with online bidding provided through Proxibid powered by Mid-American Auction Co. Inc. Please note that we will begin with a few miscellaneous items followed immediately by farm machinery so please plan on prompt attendance. If you plan on purchasing a titled item, please have valid ID and insurance information with you on auction day. In case of severe weather, please listen to KASM 1150 AM Albany or check our website at www.midamericanauctioninc.com for weather related information. If you are in need of good clean farm equipment, please mark this date on your calendar and make plans now to attend this large auction event. Thank you!
