Hunting deer, talking dairy

Pearsons, Rickemans continue tradition By Emily Breth

emily.b@star-pub.com

COOK, Minn. — Although they are fellow dairy farmers, it is deer, not cows, that bring the Rickeman and Pearson families together every November. For 15 years, Scott Rickeman and his son Neil have made the ve-hour trek from their farm near Hutchinson to Rice River Holsteins near Cook to hunt with the Pearsons. During the annual two days of hunting, the Rickemans’ herd of 80 cows and the eldwork back home are left in the capable hands of Rickeman’s wife, Jackie, their daughters, and Neil’s wife. Neighbors always help the Rickemans as well. “It’s hard to leave all the work behind for everybody else,” Rickeman said. “It seems like it should get easier.” Every year, the Pearsons — Jeff, who now runs the farm, and his father, Marvin, who is retired but still lives

on the site — are considerate about how long their dairy farming friends will be able to stay at their farm and be part of the hunting group. “We always put the people who can’t be here a long time on what we think will be a better stand,” Marvin said. “(That way) they can get their deer.” At Rice River Holsteins, Jeff milks 70 cows with his wife, Lisha, and daughters, Serena and Lila. Once the Pearsons have their chores done, both in the morning and evening, they join the hunt with the Rickemans. “I’m always looking forward to (the Rickemans coming up),” Jeff said. “It’s nice to see somebody who has the same interest.” Having registered Holsteins and sharing an interest in cattle and talking about cattle led to the many years of hunting together. “I was up (by Cook) for a Holstein meeting, and Marvin was showing me all the deer damage to the crops,”

Rickeman said. “I replied, ‘Neil would think this is pretty cool.’” This comment, made 15 years ago, is what led Marvin to ask the Rickemans to come to the farm and hunt the following season — that along

with knowing Rickeman shared many of the same values and appreciated having good, registered Holsteins. “I just decided I’d ask Scott if he’d want to come deer hunting,” Marvin said. “He and Neil have been com-

ing ever since.” Jeff said opening day normally has been a good day for the hunting success. Turn to HUNTING | Page 4

A look back at 5, 10 and 20 years ago 5 years ago Minnesota Milk names Metz Hart-Land producer of the year Minnesota Milk Producers Association named the Metz family of Hart-Land Dairy in Rushford, Minnesota, its 2018 Producer of the Year. The Metz family was selected based on their innovation in adding a cheese plant and because of their social media and community involvement that helped connect consumers to dairy farming. Jeff and Mariann Metz milked 200 cows and had an onsite creamery and storefront. All four of their children — Alicia, Courtney, Brittany and Nathan — as well as Brittany’s husband, Nick, were involved in the farm and cheese plant. As producers of the year, the family received a $1,000 scholarship toward educational programming, a trip to the conference in Welch where the award was presented and a framed art print. Hastings Co-op, Plainview Milk Products Co-op merge In the fall of 2018, Hastings Cooperative Creamery and Plainview Milk Products Cooperative announced that they would merge as of Dec. 1, with both plants continuing to process milk under Plainview Co-op’s by-laws and with all patrons from both co-ops being retained. The Hastings Co-op board had begun discussing options in March of that year

when markets for the plant’s milk were becoming fewer. The board then approached Plainview Co-op that August. By the end of October, both co-ops had voted to approve the merger. At the time, Hastings Co-op had 85 patrons and Plainview Co-op had 128.

Culverʼs supports Wisconsin dairy farmers The Culver’s chain of franchise restaurants gave customers the opportunity in the fall of 2018 to join them in expressing appreciation to dairy farmers. The company launched its Thank You, Farmers Project. Beginning in late October, Culver’s customers could share about dairy farmers they knew through an online nomination process. Culver’s planned for about 500 nominations, all who would receive care packages, but the community response to the program was greater than predicted. In the end, Culver’s announced that they would send care packages to 800 Wisconsin dairy farmers. The care packages included Culver’s gift cards, certicates for free menu items and thank you notes. Slow and steady November of 2018 found Molly and Justin Anderson celebrating the 10-year anniversary of running their farm’s dairy operation near Riceville, Iowa, where they were milking 50 Holsteins in a stanchion barn. After graduating from college in 2008, Justin had purchased a herd of Holsteins and rented his parents’ farm near Riceville, where his parents had sold

their milking herd when Justin was growing up. Justin and Molly began making improvements to equipment at the farm. They also changed to organic crop farming — growing alfalfa, corn, soybeans and oats on 240 acres — which added income to their operation through protable organic grain markets. The Andersons credited their success to remaining slow and steady as they made improvements.

10 years ago A wet, late fall The weather in the autumn of 2013 was causing problems for southeast Minnesota farmers, many of whom still had corn standing in the eld into midNovember. Scott Reiland and Curtis Boettcher were among them. Both reported that the growing season had been strange, beginning with the wet spring that had delayed planting. Each had been able to start planting corn mid-May, but large amounts of rain and soaked elds had prevented them from nishing before mid-June. Then July and August were dry but with just enough rain to keep things growing. The Boettchers milked 230 cows near Wykoff, Minnesota, and raised 350 acres of corn, 110 acres of oats and 540 acres of alfalfa. The Reilands milked 375 cows near Le Roy, Minnesota, and crop farmed 1,500 acres, 686 of them corn. As Boettcher harvested corn that fall, most ranged in the 32% to 35% moisture range, and he said it took two weeks for corn to dry down. Reiland also found high moisture levels in his corn but reported good yields and was able to

put away about 12,000 bushels of bagged corn for his cows.

Separate but together In November 2018, Kyle and Sara Mathison had merged into dairy farming with Kyle’s parent, Wayne and Heidi, by nding a unique way to nance an expansion of the family’s dairy operation. Wayne and Heidi milked cows in a tiestall barn on their farm near Cumberland, Wisconsin, but they decided to rent a neighbor’s tiestall barn as well. This allowed the two generations of Mathisons to milk a total of 100 cows — 54 milked by Wayne and Heidi and Wayne’s brother, Ron, at the home farm and 40 milked by Kyle and Sara at the rented farm. Milk checks from the two herds were kept separate, but the two generations joined forces for cow management. The Mathisons said the arrangement allowed them to pull in the fourth generation without high expenses, and it provided exibility for when the third generation retired.

20 years ago Uniting the skills of four brothers Construction of expanded facilities on the 115-cow dairy farm of brothers Glenn, Doug, Dave and Wayne Nordrum near Pine City, Minnesota, was nearing completion in November 2003. The expansion included a freestall barn, a Turn to A LOOK BACK | Page 6

Grant funding available to support sustainable agriculture research Minnesota farmers, educational institutions, individuals at educational institutions and nonprot organizations interested in researching sustainable agriculture practices and systems can now apply for funding through the Minnesota Department of Agriculture. The Agricultural Growth, Research, and Innovation Sustainable Agriculture Demonstration Grant Program funds innovative projects that explore the energy efciency, environmental benets or protability of sustainable agricultural techniques or systems, from production through marketing. The MDA will award up to $350,000 in grants using a competitive review process. Applicants may request up to $50,000 per project. The rst $25,000 does not need to be matched by the applicants. For requests between $25,000 and $50,000, applicants must provide a dollar-for-dollar match on the amount above $25,000. Past grants have funded a wide range of projects, such as exploring cover crops and crop rotation; conservation tillage; input reduction strategies; integrated pest management; and alternative energies such as wind, methane and biomass. Projects may last two to three years and need to take place on Minnesota farms, and grantees must be willing to share what they learn with others. Grant projects are published annually in the MDA’s Greenbook, which provides a summary of each project along with results, management tips, locations of previous projects and other resources. Funding for this program is made available through the AGRI Program, which administers grants to farmers, agribusinesses, schools and more throughout the state. The AGRI Program exists to advance Minnesota’s agricultural and renewable energy sectors. Applications will be accepted through 4 p.m. Dec. 7 and funding will be awarded in early 2024. For more information and application details, visit the AGRI Sustainable Agriculture Demonstration Grant webpage. Slow moving vehicle signs available to Wisconsin farmers Harvest season is underway in Wisconsin, when motorists and farmers encounter each other more often on our public roadways. To raise safety awareness and potentially save lives during this busy time of year, Slow Moving Vehicle signs are being distributed to farmers free of charge through a partnership involving Marsheld Clinic Research Institute’s National Farm Medicine Center, Rural Mutual Insurance Company, the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s Agricultural Safety and Health Program, the family of Mike Biadasz and the Auction of Champions. Limited quantities of SMV signs are available now at Marathon Feed in Marathon, and Allied Cooperative (formerly known as ProVision Partners) in Stratford, Auburndale and Hixton. The SMV distribution program is expected to sustain through 2024, as supplies last. “We’re so glad to see such broad interest in agricultural safety on our public roadways and are encouraged by the growing support and partnerships across the state, from re/EMS to farmers to feed mills,” said Bryan Weichelt, SMV program lead and Farm Medicine research scientist. If interested in supporting the program nancially or as a distribution site, contact the Farm Medicine team at nfmcsh@marsheldresearch.org. It doesn’t work - so they all say Simultaneous pulsation doesn’t work, so say the experts. You need a square, triangle, oval, or liner with some other special shape to get those cows with round teats to milk and not blow out the teat ends, so your dealer and university claim.

Tell the advertisers you saw their ad in Dairy Star!

The NMC and Cornell QMPS think the way to lower SCC is test, raise every heifer, sort the problem cows and accept high cull rates (improving genetics – yeah right…) which leads to shorter life for dairy cows, just to achieve quality milk! How eager are you for a US SCC limit of 250K that gets checked every tank of milk shipped, still think what you got works? TridentPulsation™ eliminates machine damage, stops backwashing teats by simply milking fast with a very efficient liner action and NOT closing one pair of liners while another is open and milking. Healthy fast efficient milking allows cows to last longer and yield better quality milk.

Try it in your parlor – call us to get a demo unit for your parlor to experience faster milking with better production.

Your dealer will say it doesn’t work, we will guarantee that a demo in your parlor will show otherwise.

The Colby FFA Chapter aƩends World Dairy Expo in Madison, Wisconsin. The 70-member chapter raises funds throughout the year to facilitate trips.

How does your chapter volunteer in the community throughout the year? We host a Thank a Farmer Day every year where we go around to local farms and hand out goodie bags usually full of cookies, milk and cheese curds along with a note saying thank you for all they do in our community.

of a group of FFA chapters in the area who participate in the Northcentral FFA Showcase Auction in the spring. Area businesses, individuals and the FFA chapters donate items for the auction, and the proceeds are divided between the volunteering chapters. It is held in conjunction with the local Dorchester Emergency Services Fish Fry.

What fundraisers does your chapter do throughout the year? Our chapter does one main fundraiser throughout the year, our fall fruit and nut sale. It is our biggest fundraiser, and it helps us raise money for all of our events and trips throughout the year. We also are part

What are the biggest events of the year? We hold many events throughout the year with some of them being brand new to us. We host a Drive Your Tractor to School Day in May along with Food for America in the spring. We invite the fourth and sixth graders to the high school for the day, and

we have multiple stations set up showing different aspects of agriculture. The stations are staffed by high school agriculture class students. We also attend the World’s Toughest Rodeo every February as a reward trip for those top sellers who participated in the FFA fruit sale. Last year during FFA week, we started a volleyball tournament where the various clubs in the high school competed against each other for bragging rights and a trophy. It was a great way to get everyone involved. Turn to FFA | Page 9

Members of the Colby FFA Chapter work to sort fruit and nut sale orders. The funds raised help nance the chapter’s acƟviƟes and trips.

When was your chapter founded and how has it evolved? Our chapter was founded in 1935. We have been able to maintain strong membership numbers and participation. Our chapter membership continues to grow every year. It has evolved by bringing new events to our chapter that we have not had in the past.

Breanne Zawislan VICE PRESIDENT

Tell us about your farm and family. Of my family of seven, my older brother is hoping to take over our family farm someday. We do not have hired help, and my family members have been the only workers on our farm. My dad is the owner of Zawislan Dairy, and we have a 130cow dairy herd. Most of our heifers are raised at home, and we have many facilities for each age of our heifers. Why did you join FFA? I joined to help better my leadership skills and to participate in activities throughout the year. Also, I joined to help get younger kids involved and see them progress in the agriculture industry. What is your role in the chapter? My role in the chapter consists of assisting the president, developing the program of activities and helping to encourage younger members to join FFA. What FFA contests do you compete in? For the last two years, I have participated in the dairy judging Career Development Event. This year along with participating in a CDE, I will also be participating in a Leadership Development Event. This January, I will be participating in prepared public speaking. What do you look forward to most in the upcoming FFA year? The dairy judging competition is what I most look forward to. I love competing with the three other girls on my team and get-

®

ting to see how our skills have progressed from the previous year. We hold high expectations of our team and of each other, so getting together and practicing is always fun. How has FFA shaped you as a person? FFA has denitely helped me grow as an individual. I have bettered my public speaking skills and become more condent in getting to know new people. I have learned that FFA isn’t just about one person’s own growth but the entire chapter’s growth. Getting others to participate in activities can help any organization grow, and that helps to get the whole chapter to do new things. I have learned that these things wouldn’t have been possible without everyone’s interest and involvement. What are your duties on the farm? I am the main cleaner on the farm, and I milk cows during night chores. Cleaning means I clean up where the cows eat, sleep and walk. I also help feed calves and help with any extra job that needs to be done that day. What are your future plans? This upcoming year, I will be enrolled and taking classes at Northcentral Technical College in Wausau, Wisconsin, working toward an associate degree in dental hygiene. I will be pursuing my dream of becoming a dental hygienist and will hopefully be able to work at a dental ofce soon after graduating.

The Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Dairy Team will host its annual Dairy Discussions Seminar on Thursday, Dec. 7 from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the ISU Extension and Outreach Sioux County Ofce at 400 Central Ave. NW in Orange City. This year’s focus is on how ination affects producers’ bottom line, what is being discussed in the milk marketing modernization discussions at the Federal Milk Marketing Orders (FMMO) hearings, and a review of the predictions for farm income in 2024. The Soil Management Summit emphasizes proven farmer experience and applied science. Learn how heavier, colder soils aren’t necessarily the challenge they’re made out to be. Hear from long-time no-till, reduced tillage, and cover crop farmers as they share their experiences, so you can be spared the same hardlearned lessons. The event will be held Dec. 7-8 at Arrowwood Resort in Alexandria, Minnesota. The summit features presentations and Q&A with researchers, farmers and agricultural advisors, information from sponsors and conversations with farmers experienced in different soil health practices. The annual Soil Management Summit is presented by University of Minnesota Extension and the Minnesota Ofce for Soil Health with support from Saddle Butte Ag, Minnesota Corn, Minnesota Soybean and other sponsors. Farmers, agronomists and conservation professionals from around the state of Wisconsin are invited to attend the Wisconsin Water and Soil Health Conference Dec. 7-8 at the Kalahari Conference Center in Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin. The WWASH conference is building upon the legacies of two pivotal events, the Wisconsin Cover Crop Conference and the Discovery Farms Conference.
