A sustainable solution Bohrs reclaim sand on growing Iowa dairy By Sherry Newell Contributing Writer
RIDGEWAY, Iowa – “I think the writing is on the wall, whether you like it or not: I really think that to survive, you have to be sustainable and growing,” Nick Bohr said. Those are the words of Iowa dairyman Nick Bohr, who began farming with his father, Dennis, in 2008. The pair started with 40 cows the two purchased to restart the dairy near Ridgeway, where cows had been milked from 1958 to the early 2000s, rst by Bohr’s grandfather, Wilfred, and then by Dennis and his brother, Craig. Since then, Bohr and Dennis have grown the farm, known as Full Bohr Dairy, to 720 cows. Bohr and his father also partner with Craig in a separate beef enterprise, and Craig is instrumental as extra help at Full Bohr Dairy. “To me, (growing) makes the most sense to make

the best use of resources, whether that’s milking cows, taking feed off the land or putting manure back,” Bohr said. “I want to make my dairy a size that will allow me to justify certain things.” One of those things is a mechanical sand separation system and earthen manure lagoon installed last year,
which Bohr said helps manage the downside of using sand bedding. “I heard and talked to enough people who said what a pain sand is; that it’s good for cows and terrible for equipment. I was going to learn from those people,” he said. “I knew I wanted to use sand, working back from
the cows to the management of the sand itself.” Full Bohr Dairy’s 40cow herd became 80 within three years of bringing cows home. They converted an open-front hog barn into a bedded pack. That lasted one year until they converted it to free stalls with sand. In 2014, they added a
3-row, naturally-ventilated barn, making 200 total stalls all bedded with sand. They bought 80 cows and switched out 160 head through stanchions while retrotting a double-10 parlor and holding pen into the old stanchion barn. They began milking twice daily in the new facility in 2015, and added a third daily milking in 2016. By 2019, Full Bohr Dairy added a 4-row tunnelventilated barn. In 2021, they added another 3-row, tunnelventilated freestall barn. It has been half full this fall, so it can serve as a drover’s lane for cows moving to the parlor while concrete work connecting the barns to the parlor is nished. The Bohrs have ve full-time and three part-time employees. All their feed is produced by their farm. A growing dairy works for Bohr. “To be honest, there is a part about all the work that I like – the constant busyness that I just enjoy,” Bohr said. “I just love a lot of things going on. It’s never the same thing.” Turn to BOHR | Page 4

Is it time for a change?
SHERRY NEWELL/DAIRY STAR
Nick Bohr uses a sand recycling system to reclaim about 90% of the sand used in the three freestall barns at Full Bohr Dairy near Ridgeway, Iowa. The sand separaon and bedding system was installed last year.
But, he is also thinking about the industry’s future. “I think the sustainability part will become very big: carbon credits, net zero, those things,” Bohr said. The sand separation and bedding systems work easily and makes sense both for managing resources and saving money on sand, said Bohr. After using sugary bluff sand previously, the farm has switched to river sand, which Bohr said separates more easily. While measurement by Iowa State University Extension at

the farm this past year showed 90% of their sand is being reclaimed, Bohr said what is escaping the process is so ne it causes few issues. Full Bohr Dairy built the separation system so that it can run for two to three days with little to no attention. Team members push sand up when they have time over the
course of those days. Milkers clean a mini sand lane in the building after each milking, and maintenance on the system is done once each week using a checklist that include things like oil and greasing bearings. The Bohrs keep a week’s worth of sand on hand, bringing in a load every other week. Bohr said the herd’s somatic cell count, which is usually about 170,000 to 190,000, climbed by 15,000 to 20,000 after the switch to reclaimed sand. But he also said it is too soon to know the real effect because more cows have been added. “It was a really good decision,” said Bohr of the addition of the sand separation system. He said using sand bedding and putting in free stalls after using a bedding pack early on are the best things the farm has done. Next on his priority list is a better way of managing heifers; they are currently raised in several places, both on and off the farm. He would also like to change the farm’s feed storage situation, putting commodities under roof. In the meantime, Bohr is satised with where Full Bohr Dairy stands. “I’m just happy with where we’re at and looking forward,” he said.

Get to know Addison Wemark of Ridgeway, Iowa
Addison Wemark Parents: Eric and Darcy Wemark Wemark Dairy Ridgeway, Iowa Winneshiek County 500 cows Junior, Decorah High School
Parents: Tell us your favorite experience of your daughter helping with chores. The rst time she ran the skid loader, she was really slow and cautious. It took her a long time. And then, once hauling loads of silage, she and her brother ran into one another driving the truck and tractor. What qualities does your daughter have that benet the farm? She is stubborn and has a “get it done, whatever it takes” attitude. She loves animals and is not afraid to get dirty. She does whatever she is asked to do. Youth: What are your responsibilities on the farm? I do about everything: move and bed calves, milk when needed, load pigs, eld work, drive grain car, stalk chopper, the ripper and the spreader. My parents believe school is my focus, but I take care of my show pigs before school, and I always work when I can after school and all day on weekends. When did you begin helping on the farm? I have been working on the farm for as long as I can remember. I started with easier things and would ride with my brother and say, “I want to do that,” and one day I said, “I want to do more,” so I did. How do you balance school, extracurricular activities and farm chores? I am in FFA, 4-H, volleyball, basketball, and I work with kids at church every Wednesday. I make time to do what needs to be done, and I focus on what I like to do most and then everything else comes later.
SHERRY NEWELL/DAIRY STAR
Addison Wemark works with her parents, Eric and Darcy, at the family’s 500-cow dairy in Winneshiek County, Iowa. Wemark is a junior at Decorah High School. How has working on the farm shaped your character? I have learned to be hard working and patient. Dad always said not to wait for someone to tell you what to do if you can do something you love.
What is one thing you have learned from working alongside your parents? Working hard is the main focus, no matter if you had a bad day. My dad always says teamwork makes the dream work.
What do you love most about farm life? Our family works together, and I have met people who changed my life. I want to raise my kids on a farm. If I could pick, I would come back here. It is always nice after a hard day at school or practice to be back at the farm; I feel refreshed and it makes me happy.
What are your future plans? I’m not sure. I want to be in agriculture and maybe come back here or be involved around here. I might go to Northeast Iowa Community College, maybe Iowa State.

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. – Caring for young calves is one of the most crucial jobs on a dairy farm, one that directly impacts the farm’s future success. That was the focus of the Professional Dairy Producers Calf Care Connection Oct. 27 in Eau Claire. Dr. Scott Earnest, of Lodi Veterinary Care in Lodi, discussed strategies for developing a management program to keep a farm’s youngest herd members thriving and growing, laying a solid foundation for the herd’s future performance. “I don’t have a magic bullet that makes calves healthier. It is the same fundamentals that you hear everywhere,” Earnest said. “But what I am excited about is using measurements and recordkeeping as a way to make sure that we are getting these fundamentals done every time for every calf.” When it comes to the fundamentals of calf success, Earnest referred to Dr. Sheila McGuirk’s ve Cs of calf care: colostrum, calories, cleanliness, comfort and consistency; adding that keeping records can allow benchmarks to be developed to ensure each calf is getting what they need to thrive. “Not every farm achieves the very best of the ve Cs every single day, and we know that,” Earnest said. “That is why we have challenges in the calf program, but by making them front and center in our measurements, our routine and our check-ups on our

Dr. ScoƩ Earnest demonstrates how to use a refractometer to determine colostrum quality at the PDPW Calf Care ConnecƟon Oct. 27 in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. calf barn, we can really start to drive things in the right direction.” Building a solid program starts with setting goals, Earnest said. “You really need to have the whole calf care team involved in your goal setting, so everyone is on the same page,” Earnest said. “You want to have management expecting the same things that the calf care team is doing on the ground, and ideally, you would want to have your veterinarian and your nutritionist involved in developing those goals as well. They see a lot of different dairies and a lot of variety.” According to Earnest, some of the common areas to set goals for might include growth, disease incidence and mortality. Areas needing focus and improvement vary from farm to farm. “There is no one farm I work with that does everything right,” Earnest said. “There are some that are really good with calves; some farms that are really good in the parlor. Ideally you want to hear about what your neighbors are doing that outperforms what you are doing at home and try to catch up with them.” Earnest recommended reviewing the Dairy Calf and Heifer Association Gold Standards, which he said provides information on benchmarks for all areas and phases of calf rearing.
For example, improving calf growth might be a goal. Goals for calf and heifer growth should be based on the expected size of mature cows, Earnest said. “In general, you should be looking at doubling weight from birth to weaning. So, if a calf is 80 pounds at birth, she should be at least 160 pounds by the time you wean her,” Earnest said. The heifer should then be at 55% of her mature weight at breeding time and 85% of mature weight at rst calving. “The important thing is that you have realistic and obtainable goals and you revisit them to make sure you are moving in the right direction,” Earnest said. “In order to get there, I think you need to be very clear with your team how you want things done. That way people will know how to dene whether they have succeeded or failed at whatever task you have put in front of them.” Once the goals have been set and the plan has been implemented, the data needs to be followed through with ongoing dialogue among the team on performance and results. “Let them know how you plan to communicate with them and ask them how they are going to communicate with you,” Earnest said. Records should be reviewed on a regular basis to ensure benchmarks are being reached for all calves. “You should probably be looking at and reviewing your records at least monthly,” Earnest said. “If you are not looking at them monthly, I would say it is too far on the back burner for a project as important as calves.” Reviewing the records as a team is benecial, according to Earnest, creating a dialogue for ideas and improvements. “No matter how you want to do it, if it is with meetings, emails, Post-it notes on the wall, we need appropriate methods to talk about how things are going, what is going well and what might not be going well, and how we are going to do something different in the future to get where we want to be,” Earnest said.
