Still going strong

Lawrence marks 28 years as dairy inspector

LE CENTER, Minn. –Chuck Lawrence will turn 70 next month, but he does not intend on retiring from his job with the Minnesota Department of Agriculture as a dairy inspector just yet.

“My rst goal was to hit 70 years old, but now my goal is to hit 30 years as a dairy inspector,” Lawrence said. “After that, who knows when I might retire.”

Lawrence has been a dairy farm and plant inspector with MDA for more than 28 years. A lot has changed in the industry since 1994, but a constant for Lawrence has been the camaraderie and interactions he has with the farmers he works with.

“I like talking to all the dairy farmers,” Lawrence said. “I’ve met a lot of farmers, and I still have a few of the farmers

I started with back in 1994.”

That is what that keeps the Le Center man from wanting to retire.

“I listen to the dairy farmer,” Lawrence said. “They tell me about their family, about their hardships, about milk prices and so on.”

The biggest change Lawrence has seen during his career is the introduction and use of technology. From computers to GPS and robotic milking systems, Lawrence said there are advances that have made his job easier.

“When I rst started, we all relied on plat books to get around,” he said. “Now I rely heavily on GPS. Sometimes I look back and wonder how we did it back then.”

When Lawrence rst started, he inspected 450 farms in three and half counties. Now, he inspects 280 farms in 22

counties. Over the span of 28 years, Lawrence has set foot on thousands of dairy farms. The farms he serves range in size from 11 cows to 3,000.

“I visit six to seven farms a day,” Lawrence said. “I also visit a few plants in my area.”

Dairy farmers like to visit with Lawrence, and being a dairy farm kid himself, Lawrence said he thoroughly enjoys those conversations.

Lawrence grew up on a dairy farm and milked 15 cows and farmed 110 acres, which supplies him with fond memories.

“We had cream cans and Surge buckets back then,” he said.

Lawrence said he had intentions of going into production agriculture himself, but he enlisted in the Army before high school graduation and was sent to Fort Carson, Colorado. Lawrence was trained in artillery but spent most of his time doing clerical work. He was never deployed.

“I did a lot of paperwork,” Lawrence said.

That work was preparation for his current job, which requires lling out forms and keeping records.

After returning to Minnesota, Lawrence enrolled at the University of Minnesota in Waseca and obtained a two-year degree in agriculture business management.

After working at a feed mill and eight years for a Holiday Express gas station in management focusing on customer service, Lawrence became a eld

representative for Beatrice Cheese in Faribault. During his three years at Beatrice Cheese, Lawrence worked with the state inspectors on the farms. One of them encouraged Lawrence to apply for a state dairy inspector job that was open at the time. Lawrence followed the advice and secured the job.

“It was a good career move,” Lawrence said. “I denitely enjoy it.”

Two years later, the Beatrice Cheese plant closed. However, Lawrence was established in his new career.

Lawrence said when he rst completed college and entered the work force, it amazed him that people would often stay at one job for 25 or 30 years.

“Once I realized that you can love your job, you can do it forever,” Lawrence said.

When Lawrence is not inspecting farms, he is taking care of his own animals. Lawrence has a hobby farm where he raises feeder calves and one Holstein, which he milks twice a day.

“My main hobby is the cattle,” Lawrence said. “I spend a lot of my time on my hobby farm. It gives me something to do on the weekends.”

As Lawrence looks forward to continuing as a dairy farm and plant inspector for at least a few more years, he said he sees his role as one part of an interconnected industry where everyone wants to produce the best quality milk possible.

“We are all in this together,” he said.

Farm rental provides expansion opportunity

Hakalas grow larger through second dairy

SHEBOYGAN FALLS, Wis. – When Chelsea and Justin Hakala wanted to expand the family farm, they chose to rent a facility rather than grow at their current location. Now, the couple owns one farm and is leasing another.

“We were looking to expand at the home farm and add another 300 cows,” Justin said. “But we found it more cost effective to look at an existing facility that was for sale. Instead of buying it, we were able to do a leaseto-own agreement. By doing this, we’re gaining land and other options with heifer raising.”

The Hakalas milk 550 cows and farm 150 acres near Sheboygan Falls on the farm previously known as Fly By Acres, which they now call ACE. The Hakalas also own Ba-Ha Dairy with Chelsea’s parents and brother where they milk 300 cows. Referred to as the home farm, it is where Chelsea grew up 17 miles from the farm they are leasing.

Taking over an established farm fullled a dream Justin had to reach this size. With their three daughters in tow – Amelia, Charlotte and Emilie – Justin and Chelsea changed addresses, moving from the house next door to her parents to the farm they are now renting.

“It was a big transition,” Chelsea said. “I’ve always lived on the farm.”

The Hakalas moved in last December and went into the new year with a herd nearly twice as large as what they were accustomed to as they took over an operation

vastly different from where they had come.

“You can be farming your whole life and then you take over a new farm and it feels like you never farmed a day in your life,” Chelsea said. “This farm and the home farm are two very different farms with very different facilities. I had also never managed a herd of this size.”

The Hakalas purchased all of the cows and equipment and are leasing the rest of the setup. In addition, they bought a few more cows to ll the barns. Chelsea’s parents own 10% of the operation with their daughter and son-in-law.

At home, Chelsea’s role was more hands-on as she went from milking and managing to exclusively managing at the new farm while also taking charge of fresh cows and maternity.

“I was tempted to put myself on the milking schedule here, but there are too many other things for me to do,” Chelsea said. “I still ll in at the home farm too when needed. Justin and I are at both farms a lot.”

To compound the busyness, Justin also does custom trucking of manure and silage from April through December with Chelsea’s brother. There are 14 employees between the two farms, and ve of the original employees stayed on at the rented farm when the Hakalas came on board.

“We have a lot of really good help,” Chelsea said. “We’re very thankful the original help stayed to help things ow better.”

But the year was not to be without its share of challenges.

“It’s been a stressful year,” Chelsea said. “January and February were long months, and there was plenty of wondering, ‘What did we get ourselves into?’ You don’t realize how spoiled you were until you have to try and run something else, and you don’t

know how to run it.”

The Hakalas lost 50 cows between January and March from a bad respiratory infection.

“We never dealt with that level of outbreak before,” Chelsea said. “We switched up the vaccination program here, and that has helped. We are so thankful to our veterinarian, Dr. Elizabeth Strahl at St. Anna Veterinary Clinic, as she had a big part in helping

us through this.”

Cows are milked three times a day in a double-8 parallel parlor and are averaging 80 pounds of milk per cow per day – an increase of about 5 pounds from a year ago. They feed a different ration than what cows were previously served and changed their nutritionist and veterinarian, among others, to work with the same people they use on the home farm.

“We’ve lowered the somatic cell count a lot, and continuing to lower it is our main goal right now,” Chelsea said.

The Hakalas went away from brushes and switched to a foaming system with towels for prepping cows.

“Brushes are not my favorite system,” Chelsea said. “There was a lot of moisture,

and cows weren’t getting dry. The brushes were also super heavy, and the employees like the foaming system better. We also found that cows needed a little more bedding and lime in the stalls to kill bacteria.”

The Hakalas brought calves back to the farm and consolidated calf raising of their two farms at this site. Calves had not been raised on the farm since 2018 after a plane crash destroyed one of the farm’s greenhouses and took the lives of 50 calves.

The Hakalas feed 90 calves in outdoor hutches and put up a shed next to the hutches to store calf supplies. At around 5 months of age, heifers are sent to a custom raiser and return home around eight weeks before calving.

“We feed pasteurized milk to our calves which is way cheaper than feeding milk replacer,” Chelsea said.

Chelsea and Justin are also in the process of adding more fans in the barns and would like to transition to tunnel ventilation eventually. They have also done miscellaneous repair work around the farm, including making xes to stalls, and in June, they added a brisket board.

“Cows liked to crawl forward, and the board prevents hang ups,” Chelsea said. “It’s really nice and has helped a lot.”

Justin agreed.

“The cows seem more comfort-

able and look good when they’re lying down,” he said. “We’re also using more bedding.”

The Hakalas bed with sawdust, but at the home farm, they bed with sand.

“I would like to use sand here too because it’s better for cow comfort,” Chelsea said. “We had it back in the tiestall barn before we expanded at our home farm. Sand is my go-to. But Justin wants sawdust because it’s easier on equipment.”

Chelsea has a passion for crossbreeding and has begun crossing their all-Holstein herd with Montbéliarde, Swedish Red and Lineback.

“This three-way cross has good feet and legs, nice structure, and they still hold up on milk,” Chelsea said. “Crossbreds will t in the stalls better also. The lunge space here is not the best for a Holstein. We also brought in the herd’s rst Red and Whites.”

At the home farm, 65% of cows are crossbreds. At ACE, the farm’s rst crossbred calves are on the ground and will enter the milking string in a couple years.

“We only crossbreed once before going back to Holstein,” Chelsea said.

With the addition of a second farm, the Hakalas are making more feed than ever before. They harvested almost 1,000 acres of rst crop hay this year to feed the two herds.

“That’s way more than we’ve ever

done,” Justin said. “But that’s the nice part of owing a custom harvest business. We buy a lot of standing crops for this farm and had a mass amount of feed coming in this year.”

Undergoing a period of acclimation to a new farm while making improvements along the way have kept the Hakalas busy in 2022. Powered by

ambition to take on a second operation, Chelsea and Justin are setting a new direction for the future and now have a year of experience to fall back on.

“We feel better going into next year and are looking forward to the opportunities it will bring,” Chelsea said.

Questions for parents

Tell us your favorite experience of Samuel helping with chores. We had a cow with dystocia, and Sam was the only one with long enough arms to reposition the calf.

What qualities does Samuel have that benet the farm? Sam has the ability to be agile while moving livestock and brings humor to most situations. He has a creative imagination and can present solutions for a variety of challenges. He is very good with mechanical chores on the farm. There is always something in the utility room being worked on: snowmobiles, chainsaws, skid loaders, etc. He’s also very good at nding wet holes in the eld with equipment.

Questions for Samuel

What are your responsibilities on the farm? I jump in wherever I’m needed. I work in the freestall barn and feed calves regularly, but when eldwork needs to be done or someone is busy, I can pick up and do pretty much anything.

When did you begin helping on the farm? I was helping from the time I was big enough to lift bottles and calf pails. Through the years, my responsibility has increased. I started helping because as a family farm, everyone takes stake in what we do.

How do you balance school, extracurricular activities and farm chores? I have a relaxed schedule, so I’m able to nish school work during the day and help in the evenings and on weekends. My parents and sister are pretty good about allowing me time to nish my Postsecondary Enrollment Options classes.

How has working on the farm shaped your character? Indubitably, I’m open to learning. I’m not afraid of physical work. It’s helped me realize my passions and appreciate animals.

GRACE JEURISSEN/DAIRY STAR

Samuel Jeurissen puts a milking unit on a cow Dec. 19 at his family’s farm near Lester Prairie, Minnesota. Jeurissen plans to pursue mechanics in the future while staying connected to agriculture.

What do you love most about farm life? I like that it’s different. I do a bunch of stuff every day. I’ve never sat down and been able to say, “I have nothing to do.” There is always something to occupy my boredom.

What is one thing you have learned from working alongside your parents? Don’t make plans too far in advance, because things change daily.

What are your future plans? I like mechanical work a lot, but I still want to be involved in agriculture in some way. So probably a diesel or small engines mechanic and farming.
