For the love of history Eustice’s writing career focused on dairy industry By Danielle Nauman danielle.n@dairystar.com

BURNSVILLE, Minn. – A love of history meshed with a love for the purebred dairy cattle industry led Ron Eustice to becoming an author in his retirement. Eustice has completed 14 books, 12 of which relate to the history of registered dairy cattle. “I love the research,” Eustice said. “Being able to chronicle the important history in the dairy industry, because so much has changed throughout my lifetime. That is very rewarding.” Ron Eustice Eustice recently published a book entitled “Women of Means and Cows of Good Genes,” a follow up to his “Gentleman Farmers: Cattle Herds of the Rich and Famous” and “Boxcar Boys: Riding the Rails with Bovine Beauties.” “The Gentleman Farmers book was very successful, and I thought we needed to do something on these very prominent women who were very successful and very involved in their cattle breeding operations and made the decisions,” Eustice said. “They were in charge of some very signicant herds in the early part of the past century. They were really hands-on in the operations, not only managing but also doing some of the work.” “Women of Means and Cows of Good Genes” features six prominent herds owned by women: Osborndale Farms owned by Frances Osborne Kellogg of Derby, Connecticut; St. Albans Farm owned by Irene Walter Johnson of St. Albans, Missouri; Ardrossan Farm owned by Helen “Hope” Montgomery Scott in Villanova, Pennsylvania; Van Hoosen Farms owned

Among the subjects of Ron EusƟce’s most recent book is Irene Walter Johnson’s St. Albans Farm near St. Albans, Missouri. Johnson was well-known for the inuenƟal herd of Guernseys she raised. by Sarah Van Hoosen Jones of Rochester, Michigan; Thousand Springs Farm owned by Minnie Viele Miller in Wendall, Idaho; and Sycamore Farm owned by Emma Raap Fritsche of Douglassville, Pennsylvania. While Eustice knew of several of the ladies and herds included in the book, the rest came to him by way of suggestions from others, which he welcomed. “From my long-standing background in the dairy industry, I knew of Osborndale from my Holstein activities,” Eustice said. “I was very involved in

Ayrshire activities early on, and the name Ardrossan was very well known. I began the research with those two.” Eustice found himself enamored of the ladies’ stories and how they dedicated much of their lives to challenging societal traditions and limitations. Consequently, he has plans for a second volume of stories about inuential women dedicating their time Turn to EUSTICE | Page 4

to creating farms in a male-dominated industry. The upcoming volume will include stories about the women behind such farms as Chambric Holsteins, Highlawn Jerseys, Laneway Farm, Vaucluse Jerseys, Beckton Ranch, Breezy Hill Jerseys and Ban Tara Farm. “Many of these women lived and were pursuing these goals in a time period that was before they had the right to vote,” Eustice said. “They all made signicant contributions to the industry. Two were vice president of the national Holstein association; one was the president of the national Ayrshire association and a fourth was president of the national Hampshire sheep association.” Eustice noted one of the six women featured in the book, Minnie Viele Miller, was 51 years old when she rst voted in a national election. With no farming background, Miller set out and eventually created her Thousand Springs Farm in Wendell, Idaho. “I had three people suggest Minnie Miller to me, and that turned out to be a fantastic story,” Eustice said. “She grew up in Saratoga Springs, New York, which was a horse racing town. Somehow, she moved west, rst to Wichita and then to Salt Lake City, before deciding she wanted to have animals, so she started buying cattle and sheep. She had them farmed out but then she acquired an island in the Snake River in Idaho. She basically started from the ground up and built very modern facilities for the time, to establish her farm. It’s not a real famous herd, but she was very successful; she showed animals in Chicago and Portland, and all the way across the country, both sheep and cattle. She was certainly one of the more interesting people.” Eustice said he typically spends a great deal of time in the library at the St. Paul campus of the University of Minnesota, which he said has an

excellent collection of historical breed periodicals. However, the research for this book made him look outside the box. “I did much of this book during COVID with no library access,” Eustice said. “I had to rely on my own collection and working with others who collect as well.” When possible, Eustice tries to travel to the site where the farm was located and do some local research as well. “The fun part of the research comes from seeing where the money came from that funded these farms, and what made these people develop these passions,” Eustice said. Besides his own interest in the farms and the history of the dairy industry, the feedback Eustice receives from readers keeps him motivated to continue nding and sharing the stories of the unique characters who have shaped the industry. “I recently received a phone call from a retired dairy farmer in Illinois that was especially rewarding,” Eustice said. “The man asked about several Illinois breeders and if they were mentioned in a book or two. I assured him they were. I received his check for a book, along with a note that he was setting money aside each month to continue buying books.” In addition, Eustice’s books have developed an international following, with book sales in the Netherlands, Spain, Italy, South Africa, the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand. Eustice markets his books through Amazon, Barnes and Noble and his website. “I get tremendous satisfaction knowing that people buy and read my books,” Eustice said. “It is rewarding to think that a number of my books land under many Christmas trees on Dec. 25.”

Protecting those who feed the world

Neenan provides hazard training focused on women’s safety

that can be managed. In an effort to protect the women who are helping to feed the world, Agri Safe has worked to provide training to farm women and managers. Neenan spoke of the training and its six steps on how to use the Hazard Communication Standard.

By Abby Wiedmeyer

Step 1: Learn the standard and identify responsible staff. “Somebody has to have control and make sure you are following what has to be done,” Neenan said. “Then, there’s no pointing ngers or anyone saying, ‘That’s not my job.’” Learning the standards can be done through an on-farm training or a webinar just like this one.

abby.w@dairystar.com

There are over 30,000 women involved in the agriculture industry. “More women are farm owners and are actively involved in the day-to-day farming operations,” Dan Neenan said. “Agriculture is the occupation most associated with injury to women.” Neenan, a paramedic and director of the National Education Center for Agriculture Safety, presented Hazard Communication Standard Training Dec. 7. The presentation by Agri Safe was intended for female workers and managers in the agriculture industry to learn about safety practices in Dan Neenan hazardous situations including chemicals, pesticides and respiratory protection. “The purpose of the Hazard Communication Standard is to ensure that the hazards of all chemicals produced or imported are classied and that information concerning the classied hazards is transmitted to employers and employees,” Neenan said. Proper safety practices with hazardous materials is particularly important for women in agriculture as fertility and pregnancy should be considered when women assume farm tasks. Pesticide and other chemical exposures, especially during the childbearing years, present challenges

Step 2: Prepare and implement. Prepare and implement a written hazard communication program. This program should include an inventory of all hazardous chemicals in the workplace. “You may want to include a map of your facility of where those chemicals are stored in the building,” Neenan said. “That way if there’s a re, the remen will know where those hazards are located.” A written program does not need to be lengthy or complicated, but it does need to be accessible to all who are exposed to chemicals in the workplace. Employers benet from having these because it helps with effective management of chemicals, resulting in increased productivity and decreased workman’s compensation costs. “This is a living, breathing document,” Neenan said. “It is not meant to be set on a shelf to collect dust. You need to always be taking a look at it and updating when new chemicals come in.”

information downstream, Neenan said. They serve as an immediate warning since they are present in the workplace. For instance, Neenan recalled an incident his brother was involved in in 1979. He was welding next to a ammable container that was not labeled properly. One of the sparks from welding got into the container and caused an explosion. His brother suffered burns on over 78% of his body. There was another gentleman involved in the explosion who ended up passing away from the injuries. “That is why this is important to take the time to make sure we have a good hazard communication program and make sure that any chemicals that are coming into our facilities have the proper labeling and the proper warnings on them,” Neenan said. Labels can help employees determine which personal protective equipment is necessary for a task as well. Neenan said that because it is important PPE ts properly, a lot of companies are doing a better job of designing PPE that t women. Step 4: Maintain safety data sheets. Safety data sheets are the second part in communication, with labeling being the rst. The sheets are included with the purchase of chemicals. A separate safety data sheet needs to be kept for each hazardous chemical and be readily accessible to everyone in potential contact with said chemical. SDS labels provide immediate hazard warning. Then more detailed information can be found on a chemical’s SDS. If there are employees who speak a language other than English, sheets can be obtained in other languages. Turn to HAZARD TRAINING | Page 7

Step 3: Ensure containers are properly labeled. Labels are the primary part of communicating

recorded; although, employers may choose to do so. “New employees need to be trained before working around chemicals, and current employees need to be retrained when a new chemical is brought into the facility,” Neenan said. Training can be done through webinars like this one or by an Occupational Safety and Health Administration approved platform. Step 6: Evaluate and reassess. Employers should review their hazard program to make sure it is working and meeting objectives. The program should be revised as appropriate to address any gaps. Neenan provided a compliance checklist which employers can use to make sure everything has been

provided at their workplace. The checklist includes making sure employees obtained a copy of the standard and read and understood the requirements; assigned responsibility for the tasks; prepared an inventory for the chemicals; ensured that containers are labeled; obtained a SDS for each chemical; prepared a written program; made the various SDS available to workers; conducted training for workers; established procedures to maintain current program; and established procedures to evaluate program effectiveness. Employees in agriculture, particularly women, should know they have rights when it comes to hazardous materials. All employees have the right to a safe workplace, to be trained in a language they understand and the right to speak up about a safety concern without fear of retaliation. The purpose of a Hazard Communication Standard is to keep the workplace safe for everyone’s sake. “If you put your plan online, you should be able to share that either with your local re department or HAZMAT team,” Neenan said. “Your local re department may not be trained in hazardous materials, and they will have to call in a bigger team. That all takes time before they can get on your site.”

The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) invites Wisconsin dairy processors to apply for dairy processor grants through Jan. 7, 2022. These grants aim to foster innovation, improve protability, and sustain the long-term viability of Wisconsin’s dairy processing facilities. Eligible applicants must operate a licensed dairy processing plant in Wisconsin that is engaged in pasteurizing, processing, or manufacturing milk or dairy products. Projects must increase harvest capacity or production. Funding from these grants can be used to address a wide range of dairy business needs such as food safety, staff training, plant expansion or modernization, and professional consulting services. Grants will be awarded for projects up to $50,000 and two years in duration. Processors are required to provide a match of 20 percent of the grant amount. Recipients will be chosen through a competitive selection process. The grant application is available at https://datcp.wi.gov/Pages/Growing_WI/ DairyDevelopment.aspx. Applications are due to DATCP Grants Manager Ryan Dunn at ryand.dunn@wisconsin.gov by 5 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 7, 2022. Grant recipients will be announced in February 2022. ISU Extension and Outreach encourages dairy producers to register for the upcoming I-29 Moo University Winter Workshop series. This year’s theme is “Trends and Strategies being used in Milk Quality.” The workshops will take place in two locations, Brookings, SD and Rock Rapids, IA in January. Meeting locations: • Jan. 11, 2022: SDSU Cow-Calf Education and Research Facility at 2901 Western Ave, Brookings, SD. • Jan. 12, 2022: Forster Community Center at 404 First Avenue, Rock Rapids, IA. The workshop agenda will be the same at both locations. The day begins at 9:30 a.m., with registration and refreshments. Pre-registration is requested by Jan. 5 to allow for meal counts and materials. Seat is limited at the Brookings location; an RSVP is recommended. To register, visit https://go.iastate.edu/GH5TYT Starting in January 2022 through March 2020, join University of Wisconsin-Madison Division of Extension’s Dairy Program bi-weekly on Tuesdays from 1 to 2:30 pm CST for the Badger Dairy Insight webinar series.
