This graph displays a breakdown of costs in goat dairy producƟon based on a study conducted from 2019-2021 in Ontario, Canada. The study looked at the return over-feed cost by taking farm revenue minus the feed cost. we were not prepared for this high level of variability,” Paibomesai said. “We only studied 16 farms, so it would be great to repeat this with more participants.” A further look into where goat producers were spending their money revealed that feed cost accounted for over 60% of the cost of production. When breaking down the feed cost, dairy ration and protein supplement make up the majority of that expense, followed by milk replacer and doeling ration. This indicates that purchased feed is the biggest expense for dairy goat herds. Knowing that feed cost is the biggest expense, the study looked at the returnover-feed cost by taking the farm revenue minus the feed cost. “It’s important to look at this to have an understanding of the cost of feed on the farm since it is the highest expense,” Paibomesai said. “This will tell us how much is going to be left over for a producer to be able to ll some of those other expenses.” With the milk price averaging around a dollar per liter throughout the study, there was an average of 46 cents per liter left over after feed costs were paid. This high feed cost was partly due to the amount of purchased feed that farms were feeding and the cost of that feed having increased

during the study due to the coronavirus pandemic. Of all the farms in the study, 84% of them were feeding purchased pellets in the parlor. The study also put a value on farm labor and analyzed how the labor efciency changed over the course of the three years. Most of the labor was completed without hired help outside family members. There was also an average of 3,000 hours per person per year. Labor was valued at $25 Canadian currency per hour, which aligns with the fair market value of farm workers. Taking this into consideration, the cost of production was more than the price paid for milk. “For perspective, this is not unique to dairy goats,” Paibomesai said. “We see this in a number of other commodities as well. It depends on how producers are compensating themselves.” Labor efciency was improved over the course of the study. This was determined to be a result of producers culling their low-producing animals and thus milking fewer goats but achieving the same production. Other areas of expenses included vet, breeding, building repairs and overall overhead costs.

News and Dairy Views from across the region

WI Farm Bureau praises passage of milk truck permitting legislation On Nov. 14, the Wisconsin Senate passed a bill that would allow more efcient transportation of milk and milk products in Wisconsin. Senate Bill 431, authored by Sen. Joan Ballweg (R-Markesan) and Rep. Tony Kurtz (R-Wonewoc), passed unanimously and would allow the creation of a Department of Transportation permit to haul milk and whey from cheese making in semi-tractor trailers with six axles at 98,000 pounds. This permit program would help address the ongoing shortage of truck drivers, increase efciency for the industry and reduce overall road maintenance costs for taxpayers. Wisconsin Farm Bureau appreciates the bipartisan support of the Senate and the

efforts to address this issue by Ballweg and Kurtz, as well as the Wisconsin Cheese Makers Association for spearheading this and partnering with us in advocating for this important piece of legislation. WHICH BARN IS BEST FOR YOUR HERD?

Birds just love this barn. The webs in these trusses are easy nest areas for birds. They also restrict air flow which leads to poor ventilation and moisture buildup in the building.

Starwood Rafters Uses Pole Sheds • Free Stalls Riding Arenas Pavilion Shelters Machinery Storage

The arched rafters create a more open barn allowing better ventilation. Also since there are no open webs in the trusses, there are no places for birds to nest.

Campbellsport 111 members Campbellsport, Wisconsin Fond du Lac County Tell us about your chapter. The Campbellsport FFA Chapter was established in 1940 and has many long-standing traditions. The chapter is composed of 111 members from sixth through 12th grade. Not all of our members come from a farm or other agriculture background, but they are all connected through their passion for agriculture. Our chapter focuses on premier leadership, personal growth and career success. Through this focus, our members attend leadership conferences, compete in competitions, ll out awards, earn degrees, host agricultural education events, fundraise and develop a career plan. Each member’s involvement in the chapter varies. No matter how involved they are in activities, each member makes an impact on our chapter and the agriculture industry. We are also fortunate to have an extremely supportive FFA Alumni and Supporters chapter that has been around for the last 30 years. The alumni chapter does everything in their power to support each member through fundraising, assisting with

How does your chapter volunteer in the community throughout the year? Our chapter participates in many activities to volunteer and help our community. One year-round activity we host is our aluminum can collection, which encourages community members to drop off their used aluminum cans and recycle them. Our remaining community volunteer projects include our roadside cleanup, where our members clean a 3-mile stretch of Highway 67; our clothing drive, where members of the community bring in new or gently used clothing items to donate to our high school clothing closet; and the Operation Christmas Child boxes, where we partner with a local church

to provide necessities to children internationally. We also provide a fruit donation to our counseling department through our extra fruit sale purchases, which is given to families in our school district who may not have access to funds to purchase fresh fruit. What fundraisers does your chapter do throughout the year? In order to have a successful chapter, we do a good amount of fundraising. Each year, we sell fruit, strawberries, milk from our milk vending machine and plants grown by the plant science classes. We hold an auction during our annual pork chop dinner. This event is a long-standing tradition for our chapter. We sell Turn to FFA | Page 9

ConƟnued from FFA | Page 8 over 240 pork chop dinner meals to our community and supporters each year. Following the meal, we have an auction where we auction off 30 to 40 donated items. Our community, supporters and alumni come together to support our chapter at this auction. What are the biggest events of the year? One of our biggest events is our Food for America program that we put on at the beginning of the school year. Our members prepare around eight stations of activities in the pathways of agriculture. Through the experience, we bring Campbellsport and Eden elementary second graders, third graders and fth graders to the high school to participate in the stations. This event requires planning, preparation and, most importantly, support from local businesses and community members to help it run smoothly and get the best experience possible for not only the students but our members as well. What is unique about your chapter? We make it a priority to reach all students in the Campbellsport School District with the world of agriculture. From kindergarten to 12th grade, all students have the opportunity to be involved in an agriculture activity. In kindergarten, students are invited to the greenhouse in the spring to plant owers that will be grown by our high

school students, and then the kindergarteners come over before Mother’s Day to create a gift using the plants grown. In rst grade, students are introduced to agriculture through Ag in the Classroom, where our members teach about topics of agriculture. The second, third and fth grade students are invited to our Food for America event. Our fourth graders are invited to our annual Day on the Farm in the spring, where they are introduced to the world of production agriculture. Finally, we offer agriculture courses for our sixth to 12th grade students, with a variety of course work and activities that involve students of all levels. When was your chapter founded and how has it evolved? The chapter has evolved greatly over the last 83 years. Originally, the chapter was made up of members who all came from farms. However, as the agriculture world changes, so does our chapter. Over half of our members do not come from a farming background and nd their place in agriculture through FFA. We host many events throughout the year that highlight premier leadership, personal growth and career success. Our members attend leadership conferences, host events to educate people about the importance of agriculture, compete in speaking contests and judging contests, and advocate for agriculture whenever possible.

Tell us about your farm and family. I am the fth-generation farmer to own and operate my family’s 1,100-cow dairy farm, Second Look Holsteins LLC. Along with my two older sisters, Kalista and Kaianne, we manage the dayto-day tasks on the farm. Our farm has switched from raising dairy replacement heifers to buying fresh or pre-fresh heifers. We mainly breed to Angus and will raise a few each month. Why did you join FFA? I joined FFA to improve my communication and leadership skills,

What is your role in the chapter? I help organize activities and delegate those activities to my fellow ofcers. I also run our chapter meetings and encourage participation for chapter and state events. What FFA contests do you compete in? I participate in the dairy evaluation Career Development Event, the employability skills Leadership Development Event and the parliamentary procedures LDE. What do you look forward to most in the upcoming FFA year? I look forward to continuing my knowledge of the dairy industry, participating in numerous events and conferences, and making friendships in and out of my chapter.

How has FFA shaped you as a person? My participation in FFA has helped me enhance my leadership and communication skills. Numerous conferences held by the state FFA organization have allowed me to continue to improve my skills throughout the years. Participation in LDEs and CDEs has allowed me to gain valuable experiences to build on these skills. What are your duties on the farm? My duties mainly include the day-to-day tasks. My main task is feeding calves. I give them milk until they are 3 months old and start the weaning process. Moreover, I train others on how to feed calves. I assist in giving reproduction shots to our lactating cows. I also treat the cows in our fresh pen to ensure they have a great start to their lactation. I administer Endovac to our dry cows and move them to the pre-fresh pen when they get within two weeks of calving. Recently, I have been assisting in the maternity department. I aid in calvings when needed, feed newborn calves, milk the cow and give her our farm’s vaccinations for fresh animals. What are your future plans? After high school, I plan on returning to my family’s dairy farm. I plan on taking numerous courses provided by Professional Dairy Producers to expand my knowledge of fundamental aspects of dairy farm operations. With the help of these courses, I will be able to grow my family’s farm, allow it to become more efcient with milking and hopefully increase our fresh cow milk production.

One-On-One

with Stephanie Tienter Harmony, Minnesota, Fillmore County Minnesota Dairy Herd Improvement Association Tell us about yourself and your family. I have two children. My daughter Kelsey is married and lives just west of Sioux Falls, South Dakota. They raise beef and crop farm. She has three children: Ainsley, Beau and Keira. My son, Brennan, is employed at Mulhern Dairy. He has various tasks from helping to take care of the youngstock to chopping. The things I enjoy doing are driving out to see my daughter and her family. I enjoy working on puzzles, reading and trying new projects on my Cricut. How many years have you been working for the Minnesota Dairy Herd Improvement Association? I started working with DHIA in November 2013, so I’ve just nished my 10th year. How many farms do you test for and in what area of Minnesota? I work for two counties in southeastern Minnesota, Fillmore County and Mower County, and currently, I have 29 herds. How has your occupation changed during your career? My occupation hasn’t changed too much in the last 10 years. The biggest change I’ve seen is on-farm technology.

What does a typical day look like for you? There’s no such thing as a typical day for me. No two days are ever the same. How do you adapt to the varying hours your work requires? You don’t so much adapt to the varying hours you work. You more roll with it. When you’re home, you try and get things done when you can and maybe somedays sneak a little nap in. What do you enjoy about your job? The thing I enjoy most about my job is the different people I get to see and interact with every day. There isn’t a farm I don’t enjoy going to and can’t have a nice conversation and fun at. The farmers and their employees are a great team to work with. There have been many new people I have met and formed friendships with. Tell us the most unique experience you have had while testing. While I was testing one morning, I had a family ask me if I wanted to go on a girls’ trip with them to Nashville, so of course I went. We had a lot of fun, and I am thankful they asked me.

Stephanie Tienter pauses from tesƟng Dec. 1 at Dave Scheevel’s farm near Preston, Minnesota. Through the Minnesota Dairy Herd Improvement AssociaƟon, Tienter tests 29 herds in Fillmore County and Mower County. When testing at farms, what are your favorite subjects to talk about? While testing at farms we cover a lot of subjects: current events, family, friends, holidays, local get-togethers and weddings — we cover it all.

something I can put all of my equipment in so I don’t have to keep unloading and reloading when I’m home to set up for the next farm I’m going to. Sometimes after a long day that’s the last thing you want to do.

If money was not an object, what is the best vehicle to drive for your job? If money wasn’t an object, I would say the best vehicle to drive for my job would be a four-wheel drive vehicle,

What is your favorite dairy product? In our household, we go through a lot of milk, cottage cheese, string cheese and shredded cheese.
