North Dakota dairy farm family receives recognition

WINGFLEX MATS hick 2.5” t
Award of Dairy Excellence is given to Tormaschys By Jerry Nelson
jerry.n@dairystar.com
RICHARDTON, N.D. – Dairy farmers Toby and Heidi Tormaschy received the 2021 Commissioner’s Award of Dairy Excellence during the 2022 North Dakota Dairy Convention, which was held in Bismarck Jan. 19. The Tormaschy family milks 65 Holsteins on their third-generation dairy farm. Toby and Heidi have four daughters, Natalie, 6, Kate, 5, Emma, 3, and Nora, 1. The family farms about 600 acres and grows corn, oat mixed with eld pea, and alfalfa. “My grandparents, Victor and Lucille Tormaschy, moved here in 1963,” Toby said. “They milked eight cows by hand in a stanchion barn and sold the cream. In the 1970s, they put in a bulk tank and began to sell whole milk. My parents, Vern and Kathy, and my uncle and aunt, Jim and Julie Tormaschy, eventually joined the operation. They built a new free stall barn and a double-4 milking parlor in 1984.” Toby attended Dickinson State University where he earned a bachelor’s degree while double majoring in chemistry and natural resources. After he graduated from college in 2008, he returned to his family’s farm and took over the operation. “I knew that my college degree meant that I could easily get a job in town,” Toby said. “But I would much rather work for myself and be out in nature.” Heidi grew up on her parents’ dairy farm in Flasher. “My parents, Bob and Debbie Hintz, milked about 100 cows when I was a kid,” Heidi said. “They have gradually expanded and are currently milking about 220 head.” Heidi was serving as the North Dakota Dairy Princess when she and Toby rst met in 2011. “I decided to attend a dairy meeting, which was something that I didn’t normally do,” Toby said. “I remember seeing this pretty girl walk through the door and thinking, ‘Who is that? I would really like to meet her.’” It was not long before Toby and Heidi became a couple. “I knew that I had found the right girl when our dates began to involve Heidi coming out to my farm and helping me milk the cows,” Toby said. Heidi agreed. “I grew up on a dairy farm, so I knew what I was getting into,” said Heidi, who received a degree in communications at Dickinson State University in 2014. “Toby and I meshed really well with each other right from the start.” Dairy farming in southwestern North Dakota comes with its share of challenges. “There are very few dairy farms out here, so you have to be a jack of all trades,” Toby said. “You need to be creative, be open to learning and have a good understanding of all the facets of the dairy. Because supplies are so far away for us, we have learned to keep critical repair items and several months’ worth of supplies on hand at all times.” Being creative and willing to learn has served the Tormaschys well. A good example of this took place in 2020 when they upgraded their milking parlor from its original double-4 conguration to a double-8. “The old parlor was a Surge single side release model,” Toby said. “Because of this, there was room to install a double-8 herringbone parlor in its place. One day in August, when we were all caught up on eld work, we decided to commit to the swap. I picked up the acetylene torch and started cutting.” The Tormaschys installed their new milking parlor over the next several weeks, rst completing one side, then the other. Toby and Heidi did all of the work themselves, including retting the stainless steel milk pipeline. “I had never welded stainless steel before, so I had to learn by doing,” Toby said. “It took us a while to nish it, but the parlor swap turned out really well.” The area where the Tormaschys farm suffered from a drought last year. “All of the crops that we grow are used as forages

The family was recently recognized with the Award of Dairy Excellence. for our cattle,” Toby said. “Because we live in such a remote area, buying and trucking in forages can be expensive. We had a forage supply cushion, but it’s gone now. We need to have at least normal crops this year. That’s why we purchased 200 acres of additional land last summer. When we looked at the costs for purchasing feed, we could easily justify buying the land.” Heidi agreed. “The additional land could make it possible for us to add a few more cows,” she said. “But we don’t want to have a large operation. I like it that I can walk into our herd and know the name of each cow, who her mother was and the name of her calf. I think there’s something to be said for having a smaller operation like ours.” The Tormaschys sell their milk to Dairy Farmers of America. Their milk is trucked to the DFA plant in Pollock, South Dakota, where it is made into specialty cheeses. “Toby and Heidi have consistent, high-quality milk and a remarkable inspection record,” said North Dakota Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring. “Despite the challenges, it is encouraging to know that the Tormaschy family is committed to the dairy lifestyle and producing an excellent product for consumers.” Over the years, the Tormaschys have become more engaged with the dairy industry by serving on boards and attending meetings. “I’m on the DFA resolutions committee,” Toby said. “I’m also on the Midwest Dairy Association board for this area and have been attending meetings of the North Dakota Dairy Promotion Commission. It’s been interesting to serve on the DFA board. It has enabled me to meet and learn from dairy farmers who are from places like Oklahoma and Wisconsin.” The Tormaschys will soon be adding a handful of Jersey cows to their herd of Holsteins. Looking further into the future, they would like to install an on-farm milk bottling plant someday. “One of the most difcult parts of adding a bottling plant would be guring out the labor,” Toby said. “Heidi and I are both pretty busy as it is.” Toby and Heidi have long used soil and moisture conservation practices such as no-till planting and seeding their land with cover crops. “We have four daughters who might be interested in joining our operation at some point in the future,” Toby said. “We owe it to them to be good stewards of the land. We want to leave the soil better than when we got it.”

Birds just love this barn. The webs in these trusses are easy nest areas for birds. They also restrict air flow which leads to poor ventilation and moisture buildup in the building.
Starwood Rafters Uses Pole Sheds • Free Stalls Riding Arenas Pavilion Shelters Machinery Storage
The arched rafters create a more open barn allowing better ventilation. Also since there are no open webs in the trusses, there are no places for birds to nest.

Makenzie Alberts Parents: Eric and Angie Alberts Employers: David, Rick, Duane and Eric Alberts and Laura Schimek Pine Island, Minnesota Dodge County 500 cows Senior at Pine Island High School 17-years-old
What do you love most about farm life? Working alongside my family. It’s extremely rewarding to know I am the seventh generation on the farm. I absolutely love the connections I make with the calves and cattle. Showing dairy cattle in 4-H and FFA allows me to continue a family tradition and interact with the public to teach them where their milk comes from.
Questions for employer: Tell us your favorite experience of working with Makenzie Alberts. She’s so earnest, serious and tries her very best to do a perfect job. I can’t think of just one experience that stands out. She’s very interested in the genetics part of the farm.
Questions for youth: What are your responsibilities on the farm? My main job on the farm is feeding calves. I feed every Sunday and ll in shifts when needed, helping my cousins and aunt. I also ll in milking shifts when needed. During the summer, I help my dad and the harvest crew with

I assist with harvest and other tasks by hauling highmoisture corn, bales and manure. I also complete herd management tasks when needed. When did you begin helping on the farm? There is a big difference between helping and being helpful. I have been helping on the farm for as long as I can remember. The year I actually became helpful was probably about ve years ago when I started considering this my job. I started helping my dad and aunt, Laura with milking shifts in the parlor. After a lot of practice, I was able to milk without their assistance. My dad trusted me to operate his equipment two years ago, and I have loved the opportunity to learn a different side of how a dairy farm operates. I began feeding calves part-time last year and love interacting and caring for our young livestock.

What are your future plans? I plan to attend South Dakota State University next fall majoring in agriculture communications, education and leadership. I hope to minor in dairy production in order to eventually bring back skills I learned to the farm. Although I don’t plan to work on the farm as a full-time job, I do hope to continue the family legacy by integrating new progressive ideas to better the farm.

life skills. The biggest has to be a hard work ethic, but I’ve also developed time management, communication and teamwork skills. I have a busy life outside of the farm so learning how to be able to stay involved on the farm, and with other organizations I’m involved in, has helped a lot. It’s denitely developed my passion for agriculture and reassured me that this is what I want to go into as a career for the rest of my life.

What qualities does Makenzie have that benet the farm? She always wants to do a good job, and she’s always on time. You never have to wonder when she’s going to show up. She knows what needs to be done and does it.
What is one thing you have learned from working alongside your parents/ employers? I have learned how to have a strong work ethic. Watching my family at work all 365 days of the year is inspiring and has helped me learn the drive and motivation it takes to complete the job. I now see the importance of pitching in whenever needed. My family works extremely hard every day of the year. It is my job to assist when asked. Farmers endure many struggles throughout their operations so when an instance arises, I know the importance of coming together to get the task done. I have seen many bittersweet moments growing up on the farm and understand how to handle difcult situations because of the way my family is able to.
