Measuring success to create the future Ulrich celebrates ve years as Jersey breeder By Danielle Nauman danielle.n@dairystar.com

OGEMA, Wis. – Having a herd of registered Jerseys is something Levi Ulrich has dreamed of for a long time. In 2017, with eight cows, he began building his dream of dairy farming in earnest and established CrownCrest Jerseys. Ulrich’s roots are buried in the Jersey breed. His grandparents sold their herd of Jerseys in 2001, when he was 5 years old, and switched to milking 200 goats. Despite growing up with the goats, Ulrich continued to long for a Jersey cow. “The deal became if I got on the honor roll at school, I could get a Jersey calf,” Ulrich said. “Needless to say, the calf ended up coming rst, but I did eventually get on the honor roll.” That rst calf, an unregistered purebred Jersey he named Grace, remains in the herd as one of the foundation animals. Following genomic testing to verify she was purebred, Ulrich entered Grace into the American Jersey Cattle Association genetic recovery program. Since then, Ulrich has purchased cows to serve as breeding stock for

building his herd and some to simply put milk in the tank. He has purchased several foundation animals from Woodmohr Jerseys in Bloomer after

becoming a fan of their MJ Candy DC Godiva cow family. Today, Ulrich is milking 24 cows in the barn his grandparents milked

in on their Price County farm near Ogema. He is searching for a slightly larger facility to allow him to expand his herd to about 45 cows, a number he considers workable both nancially and from a labor standpoint. “This place is pretty labor intensive,” Ulrich said. “I clean the gutters by hand, and I have to unroll round bales up in the haymow to throw downstairs to feed.” Ulrich’s goal is to someday have an animal he can exhibit at World Dairy Expo in Madison. “I did not grow up showing or anything like that, but it is just something that appeals to me,” Ulrich said. Ulrich is a three-year exhibitor at the Central Wisconsin State Fair in Marsheld. Last spring, he took his rst entry to the Wisconsin Spring Spectacular Show in Viroqua and earned sixth place in the spring yearling class. Going hand-in-hand with his dream of walking the colored shavings with a homebred animal is Ulrich’s breeding philosophy. “I want to breed really balanced cows; cows with straight tops, wide muzzles and deep ribs,” Ulrich said. “I want a cow that lasts for a long time. In my mind, a protable cow is a 10-year-old cow that is still an active member of the herd with daughters scoring Excellent. I really prefer slower maturing cows.” Turn to ULRICH | Page 4

Ulrich places his sire selection focus on type, selecting for good udders, sound feet and legs, and square rumps. “My goal is get cows bred back quickly and calving regularly,” Ulrich said. “I would like to be able to breed cows that can score Excellent by the time they are 4-year-olds. That might be tough feat, but I think it is achievable.” Ulrich places a great deal of thought into sire selection, studying proofs, cow families and daughter photos. He uses social media platforms to follow other breeders to learn more about their breeding philosophies, gleaning information he can apply to his own herd. He is using bulls like Enniskillen Engineer, Unique Webcam, Elliotts Regency Casino, River Valley Circus Craze, Kash-In Reckless and Avonlea Chocochip. He uses beef semen on select cows. To help him gauge his progress and help build the pedigrees of his herd, Ulrich participates in the AJCA type appraisal program on a regular basis and has been getting impressive feedback from the program, having nine Excellent cows standing in his small barn.

A smile comes across Ulrich’s face as he looks over his heifer pens, which are home to calves that are the future of his herd and are the result of sometimes two and three generations of mating decisions. While he takes pride in the positive feedback he receives and the progress he can see, Ulrich said some days he nds himself comparing his cows to others when looking at photos on social media or watching a show. This makes him question the decisions he is making and the results he sees. “I look at some of those photos and feel like my cows aren’t very good,” Ulrich said. “I just try to remind myself that I haven’t been breeding Jerseys for very long, and that I am doing the best I can with what I have. And, that I am using the opportunities presented to me to keep improving my herd.” In the meantime, Ulrich said he will continue to wake every morning and switch on the barn lights. And, he will enjoy the dairy farm he is working to build from scratch. “I just really have a love for Jerseys,” Ulrich said. “This may not be the easiest thing in the world to be doing, but it is the thing that is making me happy.”

A childhood venture

Dankers works as herdsman, raises calves on side By Kate Rechtzigel kate.r@dairystar.com

GOODHUE, Minn. − Raising calves has been a part of Bo Dankers’ life ever since he turned 16 years old. “My dad was a dairy farmer up until I was 6 years old,” Dankers said. “My brother, Brett, and I missed the cows and wanted to do something on the farm, so we started raising calves and it just took off from

there.” Dankers, now 28, works full time as a herdsman for Peter and David Burend on their 300-cow dairy near Goodhue. The Burends also farm 430 acres of alfalfa, corn for silage and oat in Goodhue County. When Dankers is not attending to his work on the dairy, he also raises beef and dairy crossbred calves on his farm near Zumbrota. “My brother has since

gotten out of raising calves, but I have continued to buy calves over the years and kept them at Grandma’s farm up until two years ago,” said Dankers who purchases the Burends’ bull calves and raises them at his own farm. At the dairy, Dankers mixes feed, does most of the herd health, including treating sick cows, breeding and vaccinating,

and takes care of the transition cows. He also beds the housing facilities and works in the elds. “Basically, anything to do with the cows other than milking, I do it,” Dankers said. At 7 a.m. Tuesday through Thursday, Dankers clocks in to work. Monday and Friday mornings, however, Dankers comes in earlier. “In the summer, I bed sand

on those days, and on Friday mornings, I breed all of the timed A.I. cows unless it’s a standing heat,” Dankers said. Dankers’ rst thing to do on the farm is checking the computer for fresh cows, cows to breed or sick cows. “If Peter beats me here, he does it,” Dankers said. “But Turn to DANKERS | Page 7

I check it and make sure everything is good and then I go feed.” Around noon, Dankers leaves to check on his bottle calves and crossbred calves. Soon after, he returns to the dairy to complete his tasks for the day. Typically, by 5:30 p.m., he is on his way home. Then Dankers begins chores on his home farm; he feeds milk and grain to the bottle calves, beds calves, feeds the beef heifers and takes care of the nisher and feeder steers. “Somedays it’s a struggle to balance it all, but usually it’s nice that I can go home at lunchtime and give a calf electrolytes if I have to,” Dankers said. “My job is really exible so if I have to leave for an hour any time of the day, I can. But yet, early mornings, late nights; it’s not always fun, but I like doing it.” Dankers was rst approached by the Burend family in 2012. “I was chopping corn silage at the farm, and Peter asked me if I had a job for the winter,” Dankers said. “I started and it worked out really well here. I hardly knew them at the time.” Dankers worked for the Burends while he was laid off from his excavating job in the wintertime and while Peter’s dad had knee surgery. “When I went back to my other job in the spring, I decided that I didn’t really like it and that I’d rather do this,” Dankers said. Dankers then attended Northeastern Iowa Community College and worked part time at the farm on the weekends until graduating with a dairy science degree. He came back to the farm full time in 2015. Shortly after, Dankers became the full-time herdsman for the Burends. “When I was laid off from my excavating job, Peter asked me if I wanted to be his herdsman someday,”

Dankers said. “I said I’d think about it and later accepted. Now, I enjoy breeding cows and seeing those baby calves grow into productive cows in the future.” On his days off, Dankers gets other tasks done on his farm. “I get one afternoon a week and every other weekend off, so those days I try to get more stuff done on the home farm,” Dankers said. “I’ll bed, haul manure, or my neighbor, Jesse, will help me vaccinate.” Dankers’ wife, Victoria, also helps on the farm when she is able. In the summertime, all of Dankers’ calves are raised in calf hutches, but in the winter, he keeps them inside the barn. Dankers typically has 150 to 200 head at a time, 40 of which are calves on milk. “The barn just helps to keep the calves warmer when it’s so cold out this time of year,” Dankers said. After raising feeders and selling them to nearby farmers, who nish them out, Dankers was asked to sell whole, half and quarter carcasses. “People kept asking me if I had any hamburger, so I decided to keep 20 cattle back,” Dankers said. “They always tell me that my meat or that my hamburger from my steers tastes really good.” However, Dankers is faced with the challenge of having limited space on his farm. “I don’t have enough space to have them all fat,” Dankers said. “I’d have to buy less calves if I was going to do that.” Dankers also raises 20 beef cows with his brother. “Those are all kept on my brother’s farm,” Dankers said. “I’m in charge of the breeding, and he’s in charge of making the hay.” In the future, Dankers plans to continue his herdsmanship work while also focusing on his own farming enterprises.

Get to know Marissa Weyer of Holdingford, Minnesota

Marissa Weyer Parents: Ron and Christine Weyer Employer: Dennis Gerads Holdingford, Minnesota Stearns County 103 cows Holdingford High School

Questions for Dennis Gerads: Tell us your favorite experience of your employee helping with chores. One of my favorite experiences working with Marissa would be sending her out a half hour to an hour early to rake a eld of hay, and then I would go out and start baling. I enjoy watching her rake up the eld of hay that will turn into bales. What qualities does your employee have that benet the farm? She is a dependable, hard-working person who takes a lot of pride in the work she does on the farm. She has a broad range of interests from cattle to crops to equipment. Her willingness to learn and strong work ethic help the farm out a lot. Questions for Marissa Weyer: What are your responsibilities on the farm? My responsibilities on the farm are feeding cows, milking cows, working the elds, hauling hay, cutting hay, baling hay and a lot more that I can do that my boss trusts me with. When did you begin helping on the farm and why? I started working on the farm in May 2019. How has working on the farm shaped your character? The farm has taught me a lot of things that I can take with me and apply to my future. The farm has taught me the importance of a strong work ethic not only on the farm but in other career choices. I also notice myself solving problems on my own and doing them without wrecking anything in the process. When I am out in the eld and I have a problem with the equipment or the tractor, I sit and think about what the problem might be and then try and x it myself without having to call anyone. Sometimes that is not the case and I end up calling my boss to see if he can tell me how to x it over the phone. But there are times

Marissa Weyer stands with Dennis Gerads in his milkhouse Feb. 20 on his farm in Stearns County near Holdingford, Minnesota. Weyer helps Gerads milk 103 cows along with other duƟes on the farm. when he does have to come out to the eld to help me with the problem. What do you love most about farm life? What I love most about farm life is that there is always something new to learn. I like learning from the mistakes I have made or learning how to use new equipment or identify different sicknesses that come in the barn. I will never know everything about farm life, but I love learning something new every day on the farm. What is one thing you have learned from working alongside your employer? What I have learned working alongside my parents would be to never leave a job unnished. When working on something, there is always an easier alternative that will save time and your body from getting hurt. What are your future plans? My future plans are attending Ridgewater College in Willmar this fall. My major will be in agricultural business where I hope to learn more about the livestock side of things.

For All Your Ag & Robotic Barn Building Needs

News and Dairy Views from across the region

Application period now open for Dairy Business Builder Grants The Dairy Business Innovation Alliance (DBIA) is now accepting applications for its Dairy Business Builder Grant. Dairy farmers, entrepreneurs, and processors in Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, South Dakota, and Wisconsin are eligible to apply. Grants of up to $50,000 will be awarded through a competitive process. Grant applications and more information about the program are available on the DBIA website: https://www.cdr.wisc.edu/dbia. Applications are due March 31 at 5:00 p.m. (CT). Eligible projects will include dairy farm diversication, the creation of value-added dairy products, enhancing dairy by-products or commodities, and efforts to market dairy products for export. “The Dairy Business Builder Grant has provided a meaningful boost to diverse dairy enterprises employing creative strategies to take their businesses to the next level. This popular grant is back for another round and we look forward to seeing a variety of strong proposals,” said John Umhoefer, Executive Director of the Wisconsin Cheese Makers Association (WCMA), which partners with the Center for Dairy Research (CDR) to administer the grants. “These grants will help our small dairy businesses expand their capacity, take on new value-added products and grow stronger in these challenging times,” said John Lucey, CDR Director. Interested applicants are encouraged to view DBIA’s “Helpful Hints” Webinar, now available online at cdr.wisc.edu/dbia. The webinar offers information on the grant program, an overview of the application process, and tips for a competitive application. In 2020, $230,000 was distributed to 13 dairy companies and cooperatives in the inaugural round of Dairy Business Builder Grants. In 2021, DBIA awarded Dairy Business Builder Grants totaling more than $1 million to 25 dairy companies and cooperatives. The Dairy Business Innovation Alliance (DBIA) is a partnership between the CDR and WCMA that develops and administers programs providing technical assistance as well as grants to dairy farms and businesses in the Upper Midwest.
