Benders’ tractor burns during busy day of chopping hay

Editor’s note: This is the second story in a new series titled “The Day That Went Awry.” All dairy farmers have experienced a day where life on the farm did not go according to plan. Dairy Star will highlight the stories of farmers’ mishaps and how they overcame those unfortunate days on the farm.

CAMBRIA, Wis. – Austin Bender’s memories of July 4, 2013, have little to do with typical Independence Day fanfare. The reworks of the evening did not stick out in his head like the re that occurred during the day on his family’s farm.

“We got to watch our tractor burn on the Fourth of July,” Austin Bender said. “I’m just glad no one was hurt.”

Bender farms with his dad, Melvin, and his brother, Andy. The Benders milk 120 cows and farm about 1,200 acres on their third-generation farm near Cambria. Cows are housed in free stalls, and the family upgraded from a step-up parlor to a double-9 parallel 1.5 years ago. Youngstock reside in bedding pack barns, and the Benders also raise steers in an open lot.

“We nish out all of our steers and

A Fourth of July re

purchase beef crosses to keep our calf barn full,” Bender said. “Our automated feeders work better that way.”

The day of the re started out like any other summer day at Bender Family Farms. The family did chores that morning and, later, did eldwork. It was a sunny, bluebird sky day, Bender said, with temperatures in the 80s –perfect weather for making hay. The Benders were in the midst of chopping second crop when the tractor they used for bagging – a Case International 5288 – started on re.

“I just got done lling one load of haylage before taking an empty wagon to the next eld,” Bender said. “My friend, Gage, was riding with me. We were about a quarter mile away when we both looked over to the bagging area just minutes after lling the bag and noticed smoke rolling out of the exhaust from the tractor.”

Bender checked with his friend that they had indeed shut the tractor off.

“Gage said we did, so then why the smoke, I wondered,” Bender said.

Bender and Gage unhooked the empty wagon and drove back to nd the bagger tractor going up in ames. It was around noon.

“The tractor actually turned itself back on at full throttle, and she just ran,” Bender said. “I’m thankful neither Gage or I was by that tractor when it started on re. The insurance company assumed it was electrical – a battery short or something like that.”

Bender immediately called the re department. Bender’s dad, who had been chopping hay on a different eld, was also back at the farm by this time.

Aus n Bender stands outside the freestall barn March 3 on his family’s farm near Cambria, Wisconsin. Bender, his dad, Melvin, and his brother, Andy, milk 120 cows and farm about 1,200 acres.

“It worked pretty slick that it was July 4th because the local Fourth of July parade was just nishing up, and the re trucks were leaving the parade when they got the call,” Bender said.

The parade took place in Marquette, about 6 miles from the Benders’ farm, putting the re trucks in closer

proximity to the dairy.

“They were here in 3.5 minutes,” Bender said. “It would’ve taken at least 30 minutes if the reghters would have been at their homes when the call came in.”

One-On-One

with Allyn “Spud” Paulson

Paule-View Transport in Rockford, Illinois

How did you get started in the trucking industry? I started trucking pretty much right out of high school around 1997 or 1998 with a pickup truck and gooseneck trailer. I grew up in South Dakota and would work sales in the Midwest and would truck cattle out of those sales, mainly in the Midwest, down to Oklahoma and Texas and back up. I would also haul some females for ABS and STgenetics and occasionally some bulls for them.

What do you enjoy about your career? I enjoy the people I meet along the way. You make a great network of friends you can rely on in a lot of different situations. I am headed south to Oklahoma right now (March 5), and I will probably stop at a friend’s place in Missouri to chore. I have another truck zigzagging through Missouri, and I was able to give him places where he could stop and chore. I also like being able to see so many different animals. It is always fun to spot the good ones. I have bought cattle I have hauled for myself and for other clients.

What does a typical day look like for you? There really is not a typical day. Every day is denitely different, but every day revolves around caring for the cattle, whether it is pitching out the trailer, bedding the trailer or choring on the road: feeding, watering, milking any milk cows I am hauling. Choring takes

a lot of time, and it can be difcult depending on the load. Heifer chores can typically take anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour. If I have milk cows, chores can take up to two hours.

What helps you keep your focus on long days? I listen to Sirius radio. I also enjoy taking the time to catch up and chat with friends. I always know I can call my good buddy Brian Olbrich in the wee hours of the morning, because he’s usually still doing chores.

Tell us about your most unique experience being a truck driver. The most unique experience I have probably had was this past summer. I hauled 17 Guernsey cows into the Los Angeles International Airport to be shipped to Hawaii. I helped load them into shipping crates. They were being sent to Hawaii for a raw milk dairy. I’ll be going back to LAX to pick six of them back up because they are going to be sent to New York.

What is your route and what do you haul? I haul coast to coast, border to border, and everywhere in between.

Tell us about your rst truck and the one you currently drive. The truck I rst started with was a 1990 GMC threequarter ton truck. I pulled an old 7- by 24-foot trailer that I had xed up in high school. Now, I drive a 2006 379 Peter-

built with an Eby 50-foot double-deck cattle pot. I also have a Freightliner 60 with an 8.5- by 36-foot Eby trailer and a 2019 GMC 3500 that pulls an 8-by26 Eby; so I have a small, medium and large. It is not uncommon to have all three out on the road at one time. I have friends who drive the smaller trucks for me when needed.

What are some of the biggest changes you have seen in your career? The regulations have gotten much stricter. When I rst started out, the Department of Transportation wasn’t nearly as strict as it is now. You have to be more compliant. It is also much harder to get a

commercial driver’s license now than it was even 10 years ago. Another change is technology and the ability to communicate when you are on the road. When I started trucking, it was maps, handwritten directions and a bag phone. I had a $700 phone bill once from being on roaming so much with that bag phone. Now, you have the world in the cab with you with cell phones, GPS and satellite radio. That ability to connect takes some of the stress off of the problems you might encounter along the way.

PHOTO SUBMITTED Allyn “Spud” Paulson makes a rst pull during the 2017 Interna onal Ayrshire Show. Paulson operates Paule-View Transport and has driven well over 2 million miles in his 25-year trucking career.

The Green Lake County Sheriff was there along with several re departments from the surrounding area that tended to the re for about two hours. The Benders observed from across the road in the driveway to their house.

“The tractor was a goner,” Bender said. “We were basically trying to save the bagger and the feed.”

There are no buildings on the side of the road where the Benders store their feed, and fortunately, the wind was blowing in the right direction that no feed caught re.

“Most of the reghters at the local departments are volunteers and haven’t seen a lot of tractors burn,” Bender said.

As he watched the tractor disintegrate, thoughts about how they were going to get the hay done spun through Bender’s head. The Benders lost a day in the elds as the unexpected delay prevented them from chopping more hay that day. The Benders had to wait for the insurance adjuster to come before the burnt-up tractor could be hauled away.

“We probably would’ve got another six to eight loads in if the tractor hadn’t started on re,” Bender said.

It was a tractor that would be missed. Built in the early 1980s, the Benders had it for about 10 years and previously used it to chop hay. They eventually upgraded to a bigger tractor for that task and moved the Case to the bagger. All summer long, the tractor ran a bagger, while in spring, it was used to plant soybeans and alfalfa. In the fall, the tractor was put to work planting wheat.

“All that was left was the metal shell,” Bender said. “All of the windows were busted out, and the tires were melted. The motor and shield that goes around it were blackened.”

The re caused the Benders to begin making baleage instead of haylage sooner than they expected. They had recently bought a round baler and wrapper with plans to switch over for third crop. The next day, the Benders nished lling the bag they were in the middle of and then began using the round baler for the remainder of their second crop hay.

“We got the idea for baleage because fourth-crop hay would always dry too fast, and we didn’t have enough manpower to chop quick and make quality feed,” Bender said.

The Benders took the interruption to their hay harvest in stride, and when chores were done that night, they went to see reworks. It was a welcome change of pace for a day that did not go as planned. The re that happened nearly 10 years ago while making feed for their cows made that Fourth of July a holiday the Benders will always remember.

How many miles have you put on in your career? How many states have you been to? I have put on well over 2 million miles in the last 25 years. I have worn out six pickup trucks. I have been to every state except Maine, Alaska and Hawaii; but, one of my trailers has been to Maine.

What common mistakes do other drivers make near truck drivers? People being on their phones, texting and swerving into my lane, and cutting off a truck like mine. People have no idea what it takes for one of these to stop, and the moving load makes it even harder.

What is your favorite truck stop and what is your favorite dish there? I like chicken tenders at the Woodshed near Big Cabin, Oklahoma.

What is your favorite time of year to drive in? I enjoy driving in the fall of the year – September and October – with the leaves turning colors, and the corn and soybeans are ready to be combined. I enjoy the scenery.

Tell us about a unique time when you had trouble hauling and how you overcame it. This is where that network of people comes in handy. Around 2005 or 2006, the motor blew up on my

Ford and stranded me in Angola, Indiana. Fortunately, I knew a family of Jersey breeders near Angola. Steve Bachelor brought his truck and hooked up to my trailer, and we got the cows on my load to his place to care for them. Another friend, Bruce Gingerich, came over from Millersburg, Indiana, and got me to the Chicago area where I was able to have a guy bring a truck down from Wisconsin to get me the rest of the way back to my farm in Columbus, Wisconsin.

What on-going regulations do you have to follow? There is a ton of paperwork that needs to be taken care of to comply with all of the regulations. I need to keep a log book; there is International Fuel Tax Agreement paper work and tracking fuel receipts; trucking authority regulations; DOT regulations and inspections for my trucks; and keeping my CDL updated, to name a few.

Do you have a trucking companion and how often do they ride with you? Occasionally, my sons, Suton and Dakota, will ride with me when they can.

When you are not on the road, what do you like to do in your spare time? I like to relax a little bit, catch up on some paperwork and wash the trucks. I enjoy doing maintenance on the trucks, making sure everything is as it should be. I also enjoy working with some show heifers here and there. I try not to schedule too many long hauls during the summer, as I enjoy spending time with my boys and being at cattle shows.

What automation level is right for your dairy?

Dairy automation is becoming more popular among dairies of all sizes and locations. Whether adding automatic takeoffs or a larger, more robust conversion to a robotic milking system, making the change will have an impact on the future of any operation. Determining what level of automation is right for your lifestyle, facilities and goals is key to a successful transition. Understanding the end goal

Recently, a dealership brought me to a meeting with a prospective customer interested in switching to robotic milking. This couple has been farming together for many years and milks around 100 cows in a traditional tiestall barn. They had researched robots deeply, talked to several dealerships of different brands, started discussions with their bankers and even received a preliminary drawing from a builder.

I sat down at their kitchen table with excitement to discuss their future plans and started by asking what drew them to considering robots.

The wife explained they are getting older and hope their grandson will come home to farm. They thought robots could be an investment to keep their family in the dairy business.

It was great they were looking to have another generation involved, but I questioned who would be taking care of the daily cow work, interpreting the data and general upkeep of the robot: them or their grandson? They explained their grandson was not for sure coming back, and they were not overly comfortable with operating any sort of technology.

I began asking other questions about the future of their operation without the guarantee of having the younger generation involved. What goals did they have for this large investment late in their dairying career?

The wife quickly replied, “Our backs and shoulders are shot. I am so tired of lifting the units onto the pipeline. They’re so heavy.”

At this point in the conversation, I realized this couple was at a crossroads. They explained more about how they really wanted to continue dairy farming, but the daily wear and tear on their bodies from lifting the units had become too much. These two loved their cows and couldn’t imagine a future without them. Throughout the conversation, their discomfort with all technology was brought up several times.

Instead of selling this prospective customer a robot, I asked them if they would like to install a carrier rail.

They both asked, “A what-rail?” in confusion when I presented the option. I explained a carrier rail is a track you install on the ceiling of your barn. The milking units roll on it throughout the barn so you no longer have to lift them between each stall set.

The husband and wife looked up from their barn plans, looked at each other in the eyes for a few seconds, and both let out a long sigh. Suddenly, the mood of the room shifted, their attitudes became more relaxed, and I could tell they felt innitely more comfortable with this option for upgrading their barn. They had been pursuing this idea of robotics for several months, but the thought of major investment costs and giant migration to unknown technology

had been too much for their desires. For this couple, installation of a carrier rail system was the correct amount of technology they were willing to take on without conrmation of their grandson’s return to the operation. With the carrier rail system, they will be able to continue milking their beloved herd of cows while reducing painful lifting each day. If their grandson does come home to the farm in the future, they can then work with him to understand what direction they would like to take their dairy. For now, a carrier rail can reduce the weight-load on their backs and shoulders, giving the next generation time to decide its future on the dairy. Weighing automation options

For many farms, the installation of robots has been a great help. They can reduce the amount of manual labor necessary for moving and milking cows which also generates an abundance of useful data for herd management decisions. Farms of all sizes have made the investment into robotics and found it was the right move for their operation. For others who are not ready to make the switch to automated milking, there are ways to increase efciency, generate more data or decrease repeated movements without the installation of robots.

Dairies milking with no automation in a tiestall facility also have options to reduce repeated movements. The use of automatic takeoffs can help ensure that milking ceases at the correct time while also removing one deep knee bend from each unit detachment. Or, if a tiestall operation has the desire, they could pursue the installation of a parlor, so they do not have to bend at all.

A variety of options exist for dairies that already have a parlor and freestall but want to gain more herd management data. The addition of milk meters allows a dairy producer to receive daily milk weights to help monitor their herds and make accurate management decisions. Plus, activity tags can be applied to each cow to pinpoint reproductive heats, sick animals or activity deviations. The use of these technologies can help a dairy producer nd and respond to health indications earlier than what was traditionally found by physical evaluation of herd health.

For many producers, the desire to update facilities or operations is to increase labor efciency. Many mediumto large-sized dairy producers are initially drawn to robots to reduce labor requirements, but some turn away after understanding the difference in herd and barn management. For those operations, a rotary could be the answer to manage their labor force better. Rotaries come in multiple sizes and boost efciencies for any operation by allowing producers to maximize what makes their dairy successful while milking cows in a quick and efcient manner. Additionally, automatic teat sprayers can eliminate low-skill, high-impact tasks on rotaries to help the milking team focus on proper hygiene and attachment of the units.

The consideration of automation with so many varying levels and options on a dairy farm is one that will continue to be present in a dairy farmer’s mind. Dairy producers have the ability to decide the level and investment in automation that works best for their farm and management while keeping their end goal in sight.

Cardoso presents ndings in corn silage production

NORWOOD YOUNG AMERICA, Minn. – Improving forage quality and digestibility is a topic that intrigues Dr. Phil Cardoso, a professor at the University of Illinois. So, he took to the elds to work with graduate students on corn silage production and brought their ndings to Minnesota to share with local farmers.

Cardoso presented “Corn Silage Strategies for Improved Efciency” Feb. 20 at the Carver County Dairy and Beef Expo in Norwood Young America.

“In Brazil, we get two crops of corn silage, so we have a second chance to get it right,” Cardoso said. “There is only one chance for us to get corn silage right for our cows in the United States, and there are many factors that can affect the quality.”

Cardoso said improved communication can also bolster forage quality; an agronomist can help introduce a farmer to corn hybrids that could boost benets in a ration.

“The nutritionists, farmer, agronomist and crew should all communicate

Fungicide can help

their goals ahead of time,” Cardoso said. “I believe corn silage can be a team approach.”

Cardoso said thinking about why and when to apply fungicide can be effective in growing a nutrient-dense, safe and digestible forage, and applying fungicide could help lower the risk of mycotoxins, potentially raise digestibility and affect yield.

“If we apply fungicide when the eld is more than 10% diseases, we are going to have a 93% chance that we will get an added 3 bushels to the acre or more,” Cardoso said. “The cost to apply the fungicide could breakeven with the added bushels to the yield.”

Hybrid selection is an important aspect of corn silage production, and factors such as the milk per ton quality index can ensure the plant material will turn into pounds of milk in the tank, Cardoso said.

“One of the reactions of a plant when stressed by disease is to thicken the cell walls to protect itself,” Cardoso said. “This decreases the digestibility of the plant.”

A research study applied fungicide to corn during four stages of growth. The corn was then harvested and fed to cows to assess the digestibility of the plant. Compared to the corn silage that was not treated with fungicide, the fungicide-applied corn broke down easier in the digestive tract. This could be because the plant did not experience stress from disease, Cardoso said. The

fungicide-applied corn also grew taller than the control group in the study.

Also within that same study, they calculated feed costs and production. In the control group, the prot after feed costs was $734 whereas the fungicideapplied corn was $789.

“Our goal with this experiment was to show that fungicide application can help the plant grow into a quality forage that could help cows increase feed efciency,” Cardoso said.

The

The study bagged the corn silage and came back at 30, 90 and 150 days to see differences in fermentation and quality. The control group had less sugar than the fungicide-applied corn. The fungicide-applied corn also had better production of lactic acid.

“Of all the corn produced in the United States, 14% of it is produced for corn silage,” Cardoso said. “It’s a big deal for a dairy farmer to have good corn silage.”

Senior at Zumbrota-Mazeppa High School

17 years old

Questions for parents

Tell us your favorite experience of Kelsey helping with chores. We don’t necessarily have a favorite experience but rather a gratitude that our daughter is willing to help with the daily tasks. We have the opportunity to teach and guide her with hands-on experiences every day.

What qualities does Kelsey have that benet the farm? Patience and the ability to stay calm under pressure. Also, she has a loving and caring nature toward animals.

Questions for Kelsey

What are your responsibilities on the farm? I help with milking and caring for cows and calves. I also occasionally help with eldwork. I help with dehorning and administering medication. I help sort, x fence, do pregnancy checks and milk test. I also help with other miscellaneous things.

When did you begin helping on the farm? I’ve been on the farm since I was a baby when my grandparents (Brad & Becky Holst) owned the farm and I began helping with chores in 2013 when my parents took over the farm.

How do you balance school, extracurricular activities and farm chores? I’m not in any extracurricular activities, but I try my best to do fun things during the weekends if employees are working.

How has working on the farm shaped your character? I’ve learned a lot of important life skills that I will use for the rest of my life. I’ve grown to be a responsible, respectful and hard-working person. I’ve also learned to be patient with others and animals because we all go through rough patches, and it’s important to have love and compassion.

What do you love most about farm life? I love seeing animals I’ve raised grow to be happy and healthy. I have learned different personalities and attitudes of cows and have a bond with them. I also love knowing I’ve raised generations of cattle.

What is one thing you have learned from working alongside your parents? I’ve learned communication. Things always work better when we are all communicating and working together to accomplish something.

What are your future plans? I am still unsure, but for a little while, I’ll remain working on the farm. My thoughts are to get an apprenticeship in some type of trade like carpentry or plumbing.

When do you do chores? Every day after school and on weekends.

What is your favorite and least favorite chore? My favorite chore is feeding hay to all the Jersey cows. I like putting hay in the wheelbarrow and passing it out because I get to feed my cows, Ruby and Rock n’ Roll. My least favorite chore is bedding the calves because I have to go up in the hay mow to get the straw, and it’s dark and scary up there. When the cats are meowing, it sounds like babies crying. Then, I have to carry the straw to the calf hutches and super hutches.

When do you do chores? I help with chores every day except on Mondays. I come to the farm Tuesday through Friday nights and on weekends.

What is your favorite and least favorite chore? My favorite chore is feeding grain and milk to the calves. It’s fun to mix grain and use your brain to know which bucket goes to which calf. My least favorite chore is carrying water buckets in the winter. It gets muddy, and I get mud on my boots and clothes.

What is your favorite animal on the farm? My Jersey

Kentucky. Of all my activities, I couldn’t pick a favorite. They are all really fun. I’m very social and like talking to people and being competitive. I use a lot of energy in sports and use my intelligence for the other activities.

What is your favorite animal on your farm? My Jersey calf, Rolling Thunder. She is Ruby’s daughter, and she is brand new. I am planning to show her this year.

What is your favorite subject in school? Math. I like adding and subtracting dif-ferent numbers. I use it to gure out how many barrels of bedding and slices of hay I need.

What is something you have learned in school recently? We grew grass in science class using different soils. I used normal dirt, root beer and water, and it grew.

What do you want to be when you grow up? A builder/carpenter. I would like to build shelves, cabinets and other things. I made a little wooden horse once. I also make a lot of stuff out of cardboard, like a house, police station, re station and cat-tle trailer.

If you had a farm, describe what it would look like. I want to move to Minnesota when I grow up. On my farm, I would have a grain bin site with cows and Harvestores, grain wagons and a bunch of barns to put tractors in. I would also have a big planter and tons of elds.
