The forever farmer
Kipp keeps farming with son by his side By Stacey Smart
stacey.s@dairystar.com
NORTH PRAIRIE, Wis. – At the age of 88, Fred Kipp can be found doing daily chores alongside his son, Bruce. For the past 27 years, this fatherson duo has worked side by side taking care of the tasks on their small family farm that runs nine generations deep. Fred hauls manure and feeds calves while Bruce does the milking. “Farming is a way of life,” Fred said. “I spent two years working for the government when I was in the Navy, and I couldn’t wait to get back.” The Kipps milk 40 cows and farm 175 acres near North Prairie. Their registered herd contains Guernsey and Brown Swiss along with a few Jerseys. Formerly, the barn was occupied only by Guernsey cows. Fred’s grandfather, Frank Kipp, was one of the founders of Golden Guernsey Dairy Cooperative in 1930. “In the beginning, you had to have Guernseys in order to ship your milk to Golden
Guernsey,” Fred said. Fred was born on the farm that has been in his family since 1848 and is a seventhgeneration farmer. Bruce is the eighth generation in his family to farm, while Bruce’s daughter, Emily, who works at Kohl’s but also helps take care of calves and does a lot of the farm’s showing, is the ninth generation. Married for 64 years, Fred and his wife, Mareth, met at a veterinarian ofce where Mareth worked. The couple has created a lifetime of memories on the farm where they raised their four children. “Farming is not for the slight of heart, but I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else,” Mareth said. For their 25th wedding anniversary, Fred and Mareth held a barn dance in the hay mow. “We had the best party that night that anyone’s ever had,” Mareth said. “It was lled with magic and dancing as we had a square dance caller there as well as a magician.” Although many things have changed on the operation, many things have also stayed

Cow numbers have steadily held around 40. When Fred was growing up, his family milked 32 cows, and when Bruce was young, they milked up to 48 cows at one point. “I used to milk cows by hand and had to milk three cows before heading to school each morning,” Fred said. “Later, we milked with a transfer line and buckets before switching
to a pipeline more than 30 years ago.” In 1957, Fred and Mareth bought the personal property before ultimately inheriting the farm from Fred’s parents. Fred farmed in partnership with his father until 1980. “At one time, the farm was over 300 acres, but it was split up after my mom died,” Fred said. “We sit on a lot of gravel
which is sort of like a cash crop for us.” Fred’s dad loved horses, and Bruce also grew up with a team of horses. When his grandpa died, Bruce drove him to the cemetery in a horsedrawn hearse. “We were a little slower to adopt technology around here,” Turn to KIPPS | Page 4

Mareth said. After graduating from the University of Wisconsin-Platteville, Bruce worked as a breeder. He also worked at a farm in nearby Eagle and spent a year in Massachusetts working on a dairy farm for a show herd. When his brother David left the farm, Bruce came back to farm with his father full time. Fred and Bruce farm in partnership, but Fred and Mareth own the farm. “Even when I wasn’t here, I was always doing something farm related,” Bruce said. “I’ve always enjoyed the cows and showing cattle.” When Bruce came back, he began introducing another color to the herd when he took a liking to Brown Swiss. The Kipps like to show, and their cattle can be found at shows ranging from the county fair to the state fair, breed state shows, Louisville and sometimes World Dairy Expo. Mareth, who grew up in Milwaukee, pays the farm’s bills and also judges dog shows all over the world. Her travels have taken her to places like India and China where she climbed the Great Wall of China. In June, Mareth will once again help judge the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show in New York. She previously raised Airedale terriers and bred more than 80 champions. Bruce’s wife, Monica, is also a dog raiser, breeding Cheshire terriers and soft-coated wheaten terriers. “Besides cows, we’re a dog family too,” Mareth said.
Bruce’s brother, Scott, and a few nephews also help on the farm from time to time. In addition, the Kipps are proud to share their farm with others looking to experience what dairy farming is all about. For example, a young man interested in becoming a farmer helps the Kipps on a regular basis. “He is learning how to milk which gives me a little break,” Bruce said. Cows are housed and milked in a tiestall barn which the Kipps have updated. They turned stanchions into comfort stalls and installed fans to provide tunnel ventilation. They also put a new roof on half of the barn with plans to do the other half this year. The barn is like home to Fred and Bruce – the like-minded team that views the cows not only as their career but also as an important part of their lives. “Cows are more than a source of income to us,” Bruce said. “They’re like part of the family.” Continuing to farm with his son until he no longer can is Fred’s plan as retirement is not a word in this farmer’s vocabulary. Fortunately, Bruce loves the farm as much as his dad and, like him, hopes to be farming when he is 88. “I don’t know what we’d do if we didn’t have Bruce to take over,” Mareth said. Keeping the farm in the family for generations to come is important to the Kipps, and Fred and Mareth said they feel blessed they have someone to keep it going.

Opportunities with in-season manure application
Panel explains process at Wisconsin Cover Crops Conference By Danielle Nauman danielle.n@dairystar.com
ROTHSCHILD, Wis. – With concerns of environmental impact compounded with the need for being more efcient in terms of labor, fuel and fertilizer inputs, creating opportunities for in-season manure application makes sense for dairy farmers. That was the topic of a panel discussion held during the Wisconsin Cover Crops Conference Feb. 24 in Rothschild. The panel was moderated by Natural Resources Conservation Service conservationist Brian Briski and included three dairy farmers: Aaron Augustian of Kewaunee, Jacob Brey of Sturgeon Bay and Jordan Crave of Waterloo. “Through the years, we have done a really good job of reducing risk with manure in the winter and with storage, but consequently, we are kind of pinned into a couple of weeks in spring and in fall for manure application with our conventional system,” Briski said. “So, how do we make more windows and create more opportunities during the growing season?” In-season manure application maximizes the effectiveness of manure as a fertilizer and soil catalyst, allowing

He said he deals with heavy red clay soil near Lake Michigan. “We have split our applications,” Augustian said. “We are coming back to these producers the ability to elds multiple times. The better we build our soils, the faster they heavy clay soil in his area. “Rye is a resilient crop,” Augustian can inltrate the manure.” said. “We have had manure applied For Augustian, the gains he has seen
before the rye has sprouted, and we have had manure applied when the rye is an inch tall. Then in the spring, depending on our nutrient management needs, we can do the exact same application again.” Augustian has been planting his corn green into the rye for the past two years and has found that the elds are not rutted. C r a v e Jordan Crave said their farm Dairy farmer harvested triticale for the rst time last year, and he thinks it will become a forage they will rely on for feeding their milking herd to sustain production. They averaged nearly 3 tons of dry matter that tested consistently between 160 to 165 relative forage quality. “I was very happy with that, to bring in that yield, timing and quality,” Crave said. “That total rotation had three passes of manure on it, and double cropping produced a lot of forage.” Augustian is looking to using Italian ryegrass as a way to transition away from growing alfalfa for his dairy while

Instead of growing 600 acres of alfalfa, we can do 350 acres of Italian ryegrass, which will open up more acreage for wheat. I think that will open up more windows for nutrient application.” Brey said at his family’s farm, they have been embracing alternative forages to meet the needs of not only their own herd but those of the heifers they custom

raise for other dairymen. “We have a lot of mouths to feed, so we try to maximize the amount of dry matter on every acre we grow,” Brey said. “For the last couple years, we have been double cropping pretty much every acre we have on the farm.” Brey said they plant both early and late corn for silage and follow the corn crop with rye and triticale with the ultimate goal of going away from alfalfa production as well. “We have been really happy with the yields,” Brey said. “We might need to use a little more fertilizer this
year to get our protein levels where they need to be to completely replace the alfalfa. The cost to grow a ton of rye and triticale versus the cost to grow a ton of alfalfa; there is a big difference there.” Brey said with the higher solid content of his manure, he prefers to inject the manure into the soil rather than use surface application on a growing crop. “The rye and triticale do an amazing job of soaking up all the nutrients in the manure, and we want to use all of the nitrogen we can especially in years like this,” Brey said. “And, the winter forages do a great job of alleviating compaction in the soil.”

ABBY WIEDMEYER/DAIRY STAR
Ashley Olson (from leŌ), Tim Servais, Jim MarƟn, Roger Hanson and Jennifer Clark gather Feb. 26 to parƟcipate in a dairy career panel for Vernon County’s youth in Coon Valley, Wisconsin. Advice was given on the opportuniƟes in agriculture following high school.
Vernon County dairy career day highlights opportunities for youth By Abby Wiedmeyer abby.w@dairystar.com
COON VALLEY, Wis. – Whether someone grows up on a farm or not, or decides to milk cows for a living or not, agriculture has a lot to offer in terms of careers. Some of these opportunities were presented to youth Feb. 26 in Coon Valley. “The biggest thing I learned from it is dairy farmers are pretty much the same all over the world,” Roger Hanson said. “They want to be protable. They want to have a good life. They enjoy what they’re doing and have a passion for what they’re doing.” Hanson is the retired vice president of Accelerated Genetics and one of ve industry professionals who shared their insight with youth at the career panel put on by the Vernon County Dairy Youth Fund. Hanson was joined by Jim Martin, retired ProActive Solutions USA LLC chemical specialist; Tim Servais, dairy farmer; Ashley Olson, Vernon County Extension agent; and Jennifer Clark, Brown Swiss USA classier. While the careers of the panelists vary, they share the connection of agriculture. The panel agreed that building relationships and pursuing a degree in agriculture could take youth far in life. “Dairy is worldwide; it’s just unbelievable,” Martin said. “If your career takes off, the sky’s the limit on what you can do.” Martin worked for more than 30 years at Accelerated Genetics and is now retired. He said his careers offered him opportunities to travel to Japan, Europe, South America and Canada. “It is very interesting to see the impact that U.S. agriculture has on the entire world,” Martin said. “People come from all over the world to be a part of it.” Servais, a dairy farmer near Coon Valley, said he has hosted international visitors on his farm and has traveled to New Zealand. Servais said the tours came about in part because he is a member of Organic Valley. “It’s really fun to have those experiences, and agriculture has a lot to offer if you go after it,” Servais said. Clark travels frequently as a classier for Brown Swiss USA and agreed that agriculture offers opportunities for those who aspire to see more of the world. Clark’s territory as a classier is nationwide. She said she enjoys seeing the country even though the travel can be exhausting. “I like the people,” Clark said. “I get to travel a lot. … Meeting people, seeing cows and seeing
different sites of the country are my favorite parts of it.” Youth were advised to follow their passions when considering continuing education. Even though the majority of youth raised their hands when asked if they did not enjoy school, the same hands raised when asked if they planned to attend some form of college. “Any degree makes a difference,” Servais said. “It means you put in the time.” The panel agreed a degree would maximize opportunities and assured students they did not have to know exactly what they wanted to do for a job in order to attend college. “The industry has a lot of ways you can go,” Clark said. “Just because you have a degree in dairy science doesn’t mean you have to do a certain thing. Employers will train you.” Servais encouraged youth to look into scholarships to help fund their education. “My kids all went to school and came home with money in the bank,” Servais said. “You have to know how to go for grants and scholarships.” While a degree may help secure a job, Hanson said having an agricultural background will already set students apart from the rest of the workforce. “Employers look for people with an ag background,” Hanson said. “You are in huge demand.” Other words of wisdom that poured from the panelists included the importance of being aware of social media presence. “Just remember that whatever you’re putting out there, anybody and everybody can see,” Olson said. “It never goes away. It can be a great tool and a good resource. You can reach a lot of people and learn a lot of things, but just be careful.” Hanson said employers look at social media proles when making hiring decisions. Servais worked as a milk hauler for a while after high school and said it is important for youth to gain experience off the farm even if they are led back home in the end. “There’s a lot of opportunity to get a good education and go get that job for a little while,” Servais said. “You’ll have a lot better mindset if you do decide to come back, and you’ll know if that’s what you want to do.” Hanson encouraged the youth in attendance to look inside themselves when considering their decisions after high school. “One of the things you’re seeing with us all up here is the passion for agriculture,” Hanson said. “Make sure that when you’re thinking about what you would like to do, think about what your passion is.” Once passion is found, Servais encouraged the youth to keep the doors open for opportunity. “Opportunities are always there; don’t miss them,” Servais said. “Present yourself well so people see you and you don’t miss those opportunities.”

Grants available for value-added agricultural processing The Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) is now accepting applications for its Agricultural Growth, Research, and Innovation (AGRI) Value-Added Grant program. The program offers designated grants to help Minnesota processors add value to Minnesota agricultural products by investing in the purchase of equipment, production capacity, market diversication, and market access for value-added products. Applicants must: – Be an individual (including farmers), business, agricultural cooperative, or a local unit of government (including Tribal governments) engaged in value-added processing – Currently reside in Minnesota or be authorized to conduct business in Minnesota – The MDA anticipates awarding approximately $1,000,000 using a competitive review process. The maximum equipment award is $150,000, and the minimum award is $1,000. Grantees are responsible for at least 75% of the total project cost as a cash match. Funding for the AGRI Value-Added Grant will be awarded in one round. The AGRI Value-Added Grant application must be received by 4 p.m. on Thursday, March 24, 2022. Decisions are expected in early May. We require proposals to be submitted through our online application system. If a grant application submitted during the 2021 AGRI Meat, Poultry, Egg, and Milk Processing Grant round was not selected, it will automatically be considered for this AGRI Value-Added Grant round. For more information, visit the AGRI Value-Added Grant Program website. Funding for the grants was established through the AGRI Program to advance Minnesota’s agricultural and renewable energy industries. Dairy group: Climate-smart commodities initiative will build on farmers’ efforts Edge Dairy Farmer Cooperative, one of the largest dairy co-ops in the country, welcomed an announcement today of a $1 billion federal grant program to incentivize sustainable farming and ranching practices and to increase market opportunities for the resulting products. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said the new Partnerships for Climate-Smart Commodities will nance pilot projects that reduce greenhouse gas emissions or sequester carbon, and use innovative, science-based ways to measure the benets. U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) grants ranging from $250,000 to $50 million will be available to a broad range of organizations and traditional agricultural partners chosen through an application process. “Edge Dairy Farmer Cooperative and our farmer members have already committed to more sustainable farming practices,” Edge President Brody Stapel said. “This infusion of money will help build on that work. “Edge helps support a number of farmer-led conservation groups and we recognize those efforts are only the beginning,” Stapel said. “Edge and our sister organization, Farmers for Sustainable Food, are also working with dairy processors to develop sustainability projects based on their milksheds, including a pilot project recognized nationally for its supply chain partnerships. This is an ideal way to focus on sustainability in a commodity-specic fashion from production to processing and on to nal consumption. We are hopeful the new USDA grants will help to expand efforts like this aimed at both sustainability for the environment and nancial viability for the farmer.” Seven of the world’s best cheeses hail from Wisconsin Seven Wisconsin cheeses rank in the world’s top 20 at the 2022 World Championship Cheese Contest displaying Wisconsin cheesemakers’ premier expertise. Results from the contest conrm Wisconsin continues to create innovative and highquality cheeses. For the rst time ever, fourth generation Wisconsin cheesemaker, Chris Roelli of Roelli Cheese Company earned a spot in the top-20 with original creation Red Rock: a cave-aged cheddar with a hint of blue. Emmi Roth once again entered the nals with their Best of Class Grand Cru Surchoix that was named World Champion in the 2016 competition. Other Wisconsin cow’s milk cheeses securing top spots are Land O’ Lakes cheddar aged 1–2-years, Klondike Cheese Company Odyssey peppercorn feta, BelGioioso creamy gorgonzola and Arla Castello smoked cracked pepper gouda. The 34th biennial three-day contest brought together the world’s nest dairy products for technical evaluation and to compete for global recognition. Of the prestigious awards, Wisconsin earned more top-nalist placements than any other state or country. Key wins from the State of Cheese® include: 39 Best of Class awards, 35 second awards and 36 third awards; 46 Wisconsin cheese and dairy companies won one or more awards; Wisconsin cheese and dairy companies swept 12 classes (took the top three places).

Farm nancial planning program available for producers As farmers begin to make nancial projections for the new year, there are resources available from Iowa State University Extension and Outreach that can help. A popular choice is the Farm Financial Planning Program, which includes access to seven different farm nancial associates, in addition to software and helpful publications and guides. Nancy Brannaman, a nancial associate from east central Iowa, said the program allows producers and the associate to take a broad look at what’s going on within an operation, where the operator would like to be in the future and what must be done for success. “We use budgeting software that allows us to analyze a farm’s current situation, beginning balance sheet and income statement, costs of production and family living expense,” she said. “With all of this information, we can look not only at protability but also debt repayment capacity and alternative business options, based on cash ow from farm and non-farm income.” Like the other nancial associates, Brannaman has a background in risk management and nance. She is the farm manager for her family farm, in Illinois, and worked for nearly seven years as a farm management specialist with ISU Extension and Outreach. Ann Johanns, program specialist with economics at Iowa State, said the associates give an honest assessment about the path forward. The associate offers a big picture look at the farm, and it’s up to the farmer to make specic changes and to contact the specialists who can help. While working with nancial associates is important, Johanns said it’s equally important to follow up with the specialists the associate recommends. “It’s all inter-related,” Johanns said. “The associates are one piece of looking at the overall picture.” Brannaman said the clients she helps are often looking to enter farming or expand in a way that allows more family members to work for the farm. She said the nancial program also helps families who just need to get everyone on the same page, especially when multiple generations are involved. “I value family farming and fully employing family members on farms and supporting small towns and rural schools,” she said. “As an associate, I get to accomplish this by helping farm families and new farmers gure out how to bring in new family members, and use their talents and interests in the family operation.” Farmers can locate a Farm Financial Planning Program associate in their area by contacting their ISU Extension and Outreach county ofce or by visiting the Farm Financial Planning Program website. For questions on whether meeting with an associate is the right step, contact the farm management eld specialist in your area.
