Farmers share insight on signicant production increase
Dairy Star visited with ve producers who test with Minnesota Dairy Herd Improvement Association. These producers had substantial herd average increases from 2018 to 2021. What was your herd average three years ago compared to now? Brase: Three years ago, it was 8,407 pounds, and now, it is 13,507 pounds. Dahring: It was 12,763 pounds and is now at 16,525 pounds. Klejeski: It was 12,877 pounds. Now, it’s 17,607 pounds. It’s not where we want it to be, but we’re glad to see it heading in the right direction. Martin: It was 24,081 pounds and is now a 26,698-pound rolling herd average.
Alistaire (from left), Heidi, Ephraim, Jonathon, Phil and Oliver Brase Waseca, Minnesota Steele County 80 cows

Dahring: Feed quality is important, so once we handled the mold in the corn silage, cows had less problems, and naturally, milk production increased. We had stray voltage in our barn. Once we dealt with that, we saw a change in production also. Klejeski: Stray voltage was a huge challenge, and it took months to track down the culprit and x the problem. Another challenge was trying to put up high-quality feed when the weather was so dry last year. When I started milking, I purchased people’s cull cows and bred with a bull, so the quality of animals just wasn’t there. DHIA testing, using articial insemination and purchasing better cows from herds with great genetics made a huge difference in our herd. Martin: We got control of our reproduction program. Our services per conception dropped from more than three services three years ago to two services now. Days in milk dropped to around 160 days because of it. Rybinski: The tunnel ventilation has helped a lot. Not only does it help with keeping the temperature just right for the cows, but it also helps with y control in the summer months. What advice do have for any producer trying to increase their herd average?

Brase: Be willing to quickly adapt to the wild extremes in weather. Ask your legislators to subsidize the hauling of milk for small farmers for the purpose of having enough small farmers around. Farmers will naturally share their experiences with one another, which gives a person ideas how to create something unique for their farm to improve. Join an organization that meets at least once a month that has other dairy farmers in it to get ideas and share information. Dahring: Test your feed for mycotoxins and molds. Quality feed helps with production. Klejeski: Find people who are working to help you and not just sell a product. Having a good team of knowledgeable people who want to see you succeed is key. Be willing to take their advice and make changes. For a farm our size, it was important to be innovative but stay within our means. Small changes made a huge difference. Martin: Put a very strong focus on cow comfort, feed digestibility and reproduction. Missed heats are expensive. Rybinski: Don’t be afraid to try new methods which could lead to success. You’ll never know the outcome unless you try. Tell us about your farm and your goals for your dairy this year.

Brase: We have about 400 acres of organic production. We switched to organic six years ago based on the Mayo Clinic’s advice to my son. The dairy is not organic. We also have about a 45-cow beef herd and raise purebred White German Shepherd puppies. We have a few free-range chickens, geese and ducks. There are three homes on the farm. My daughter-in-law’s uncle lives in one of the homes, and my son and daughter-in-law live in the second home with their three little boys. I also have two other sons who are single and work here on the farm. My goal had been to see whether I could breed a line of animals that are healthy and milk well in an electrical eld situation and continue my research. Dahring: We will be cutting back on our number of cows and gradually will retire. Klejeski: It’s a family affair. I purchased the farm from my grandparents in 2001. I started milking cows in 2006 with help from my dad, brother and grandpa. My wife and I now have ve kids who keep us plenty busy. We have a mix of breeds on the farm: Holstein, Jersey, Guernsey, Brown Swiss and Ayrshire. The kids enjoy showing cattle in 4-H. In 2020, we started a YouTube channel that chronicles our life on the dairy farm. It has had over 4.2 million views and has helped us afford to make improvements on the farm. We had set a lot of goals for the farm this year, but with the rising costs of everything and the uncertainty of product availability, we’re denitely adjusting our goals. Keeping our costs down while continuing to improve our herd is the goal this year. Martin: My goal for this year is to get my somatic cell count down. SCC is something I never really worried about. My wife, Kim, and I along with our four children, Autumn, 9, Tabitha, 6, Bryce, 5, and Carrie, 1, farm 140 acres, growing 45 acres of alfalfa and 95 acres of silage corn. We purchased the farm in the fall of 2018. Rybinski: We live near Hendricks, and we milk 200 cows. My wife, Lisa Marie, and I have three kids, Ryker, 10, Ryanna, 8, and Rylissa, 6. It is a family operation, and we make a good team to run the farm effectively. We believe diversity is an important part of our operation. We grow corn, wheat, alfalfa and soybeans. We also have our herd of beef cows and do custom chopping on the side. The days are long, and there is always plenty to do.

Climate-smart commodities initiative will build on farmers’ efforts
Edge Dairy Farmer Cooperative, one of the largest dairy co-ops in the country, welcomed an announcement today of a $1 billion federal grant program to incentivize sustainable farming and ranching practices and to increase market opportunities for the resulting products. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said the new Partnerships for Climate-Smart Commodities will nance pilot projects that reduce greenhouse gas emissions or sequester carbon, and use innovative, science-based ways to measure the benets. U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) grants ranging from $250,000 to $50 million will be available to a broad range of organizations and traditional agricultural partners chosen through an application process. “Edge Dairy Farmer Cooperative and our farmer members have already committed to more sustainable farming practices,” Edge President Brody Stapel said. “This infusion of money will help build on that work. “Edge helps support a number of farmer-led conservation groups and we recognize those efforts are only the beginning,” Stapel said. “Edge and our sister organization, Farmers for Sustainable Food, are also working with dairy processors to develop sustainability projects based on their milksheds, including a pilot project recognized nationally for its supply chain partnerships. This is an ideal way to focus on sustainability in a commodityspecic fashion from production to processing and on to nal consumption. We are hopeful the new USDA grants will help to expand efforts like this aimed at both sustainability for the environment and nancial viability for the farmer.”

Get to know Izzy Badtke of Ripon, Wisconsin
Izzy Badtke 17 years old Senior at Ripon High School Parents: DuWayne and Amy Badtke Employer: Pollack-VU Dairy Ripon, Wisconsin Fond Du Lac County 150 cows Questions for Deb Pollack: Tell us your favorite experience of Izzy Badtke helping with chores. Since Izzy started working for us, we have had more heifer calves than ever before, to the point of overowing. I could not have remained sane without her help. We did give her Saturday mornings off. I hated Saturday mornings. We also have four grandchildren, 5.5 years to 9 months. The three oldest, Heidi, Max and Dane, love to help Izzy with her chores feeding calves. Max, at age 2, declared that Izzy was his girlfriend. What qualities does Izzy Badtke have that benet the farm? Izzy comes from a dairy farm and shows cattle so she already knew how to handle and work around them. She also gets to work on time. Izzy is in charge of feeding the young calves their milk. So being on time and feeding at regular intervals is important. Izzy is also willing to help us with whatever we need help with that day. Questions for Izzy Badtke: What are your responsibilities on the farm? I am responsible for taking care of the calves. I do everything from feeding the calves milk, grain and water, to giving them fresh bedding and taking care of the newborns. I also pitch pens and take care of the older calves, feeding grain and hay twice a day. Recently, I’ve been helping milk cows a couple mornings each week and learning new skills with milking. I’m often given other odd jobs around the farm to help make the farm a cleaner and more sanitary place for people and the animals. When did you begin helping on the farm? I began helping at the Pollack farm in June 2020. The pandemic had just started, and I really wanted a job to keep me busy and make some money. My mom contacted Chris Pollack, Deb’s son, to see if they needed any help and to my benet they did. I’m so happy to have gotten this experience and been able to work while earning money and my high school degree. How do you balance school, extracurricular activities and farm chores?

Izzy Badtke (right) stands with her employer, Deb Pollack, March 12 at Pollack-VU Dairy near Ripon, Wisconsin. Badtke is responsible for taking care of calves and also helps with milking the farm’s 150-cow herd. I always communicate with my boss when I need or want to have off for something. She is understanding and reasonable when I ask. FFA is a big part of my life, as I am secretary of our chapter. I’m always going to conferences and dairy judging competitions to further my knowledge in agriculture. Deb is very understanding when it comes to school and FFA responsibilities as she’s an active member of the FFA Alumni. I also am part of the Country Clovers 4-H Club in Green Lake County and was named Junior Fairest of the Fair. I will be attending many events, and I know Deb will be understanding and work with me so I can play the role. How has working on the farm shaped your character? Working on the farm has helped me gain a work ethic like no other and taught me how to manage small and big tasks. Although I’m not working with other people, I’ve learned communication skills are important when working on a farm. It’s helped me learn to be responsible for taking care of many animals to help the farm succeed.
have Deb or others helping me when I need it. What is one thing you have learned from working alongside your employer? One thing I’ve learned is that not everything is going to be easy, but there’s always going to be a way to cross the obstacle. Deb always encourages me to try and learn new things when she can. She is always looking out for me and wishing the best for me as
well. At Pollack-VU Dairy, I’m treated as a member of the family, and I’m so blessed to have these special people as a big part of my life. What are your future plans? I plan to attend the University of WisconsinPlatteville in the fall majoring in dairy science. I’m unsure of what my future career will be but hope to contribute greatly to the dairy industry and world of agriculture.
BALEBUSTER 2574 BALE PROCESSOR
What do you love most about farm life? I love being around and taking care of the animals, and I also love that chores and obstacles can be different every day. I like that I get to be independent most of the time and always
