Visitors took a moment to pet the lambs during the third annual Ag Awareness Day April 17 on the University of Minnesota campus.

MINNEAPOLIS – For the third year in a row, the Agricultural Education Club brought farming to the city through their Agriculture Awareness Day at the University of Minnesota. Beautiful weather provided the perfect environment for the Agricultural Education Club to connect Minnesota agriculture to the University community. Farmers and agricultural organizations lined Church Street on the East Bank of Minneapolis Campus in an effort to share their agricultural story. “With a growing need for agricultural education, I am delighted to be part of this event for a third year in a row,” said Dale Busch, corn and soybean farmer from St. James, Minnesota. “The students passing by are interested in our story and a joy to work with. I feed on the energy present and love it!” Members of the Agricultural Education Club joined with 22 agricultural organizations to host interactive displays sharing the story of Minnesota agriculture. Among the booths, the animals were quite popular. The animals lining Church Street included a dairy calf, chickens, ewe with baby lambs, llamas, and a beef steer and heifer. New to this year’s event were tours for a local preschool. Forty 3 to 5 year olds had the opportunity to attend three stations including an animal tour, educational story and planting a seed. For many visitors on Minneapolis campus, Ag Awareness Day is a brand new experience for them. “The Agriculture Education club is proud to host an event that connects the University Community to the roots of rural agriculture. The animals and interactive nature of this event make it a great place for people to ask their questions about food, ber and fuel” said Ag Awareness Day Communications co-chair, Kristen Wingert, a senior majoring in Agricultural Education. The impact made during six hours on Church Street through Ag Awareness Day was clearly shown through the social media buzz, questions asked, and photos taken. The Agricultural Education Club is proud of the event and already making plans for next year’s event! The Agricultural Education Club is the oldest student organization on the St. Paul Campus and is open to students of all majors. The Ag Ed Club is a professional leadership development organization, which prepares students for careers in agriculture, food, and natural resource sciences.

The Dairy Star interviews ag professionals for an inside look at their careers.

One-On-One

Tell us about your farming background. I grew up on this farm where my parents, Chuck and Karen, dairy farmed. I attended South Dakota State University and graduated with a general agriculture degree. We had a diversied farm so I didn’t want a specialized degree. I met my wife, Jenny, at SDSU, and in 1999 we got married and moved back to the farm. I started working with my dad full-time. In 2000, we sold the milking herd and started raising heifers. Over the past 12 years, I’ve been buying into the operation. One year ago, I bought the home farm and took over ownership from my parents. My dad and I still work together on the farm. Jenny and I have three kids that also like being around the farm: Grace (8), Tyler (5) and Karana (2).

Tell us about your heifer raising business. We raise about 400 animals for a dairy farmer near Mazeppa, Minn. The heifers come to us about 400 pounds and are sent back to the dairy six weeks before calving. We get about 25 calves every three weeks. We split up the transportation duties with the dairy – we will haul the heifers one way, while the farm will haul them the other way. We charge a rate per head per day. What kind of facility are the heifers housed in? It is our dairy facility converted for heifers 12 years go. We have 12 different lots, which each have a concrete area, a dirt area and a mound of corn stalks where the animals rest. Most lots also have a shed or a barn they can go into for adverse weather conditions. There is one designated breeding pen that has headlocks. After the heifers are bred, they go into pens that have a barn with

with Dan Erickson, heifer raiser What is a typical day like for you? I spend three hours every morning feeding all the animals. I’m done by 8 a.m. because that’s when the A.I. technician comes. Other than that, it depends on the day – putting in bedding, adding hay, scraping lots, moving animals or vaccinating. I also have a corn and soybean operation so I do other things throughout the day. The younger heifers on the grain mix are fed again in the evening.

KRISTA M. SHEEHAN/ DAIRY STAR

Dan Erickson is a heifer raiser from Alden, Minn. in Freeborn County. He raises about 400 animals for a dairy farmer near Mazeppa, Minn. freestalls in addition to the mound. We do this so the animals get used to the freestalls before they go back to the dairy. The freestalls have rubber mats that are bedded with sawdust. We move the heifers around every three weeks to the different pens based on age and weight.

comes every day at 8 a.m. to breed them. If they are not settled in the rst service, we use estrus patches. The farm owners pick out bulls using a mating service. All heifers are bred using A.I. Our goal is to try to have a high conception rate for the rst service.

What do you feed them? Haylage, corn silage, distillers and bulk mineral. The younger animals get high moisture corn. Breeding and prebreeding heifers have mineral lick tubs. All animals have free choice hay.

What do you do to prevent diseases? Nothing is comingled because we only raise heifers for one dairy. We do 5-way and 7-way vaccinations. The biggest thing is the calf care at the dairy. They do a wonderful job and get them started on the right foot as calves.

What are your goals for breeding? Heifers are bred at 13 months or about 800 pounds. They are put into the rst-time breeding pen, which has headlocks. We visually check for heat and also use tail paint. An A.I. technician

What are your cleaning protocols? I scrape the concrete once a week onto the corn stalk mounds. The freestall barn is scraped almost every day. It depends on weather how often

we have to add corn stalks to the mounds to keep them dry. We’ve had a lot of rain lately, which is hard on the mounds. Sometimes we bed once a week or it could be three times a week. It all depends on the weather. What are the benets of dairy farmers sending their animals to a heifer raiser? We’re totally geared and focused on the heifers instead of having to worry about the milking and the young calves. This is our only end of the operation. We can focus our attention and our facilities on the heifers. On a large dairy, it takes a large facility to house all the animals and more employees. Heifer raising takes a certain mindset. We’re not feeding steers out here. Being that we had the dairy and we’re set up for the forages, we can really gear around the heifers.

What is the most challenging aspect of raising heifers? Breeding conception. We strive for good conception rate, but it’s weather dependent. Extreme heat or cold can denitely play into it. There are a lot of things that go into the heifer’s cycle and if she can get bred on a rst service What do you like best about raising heifers? Cattle are my passion but the milking part of it wasn’t. To me, this is the next best option. For us to not have to be in the steer market is a big thing. I don’t like fat cattle as much. Heifer raising is a niche market I enjoy. Some dairies in the last 10 to 12 years have gotten bigger and can’t handle raising their heifers. Not everyone does it and not everyone can do it. Tell us something about heifer raisers many dairy farmers don’t know. I think dairy farmers know this, but it’s important to stress that heifers are the future of a dairy’s operation. If a heifer raiser doesn’t do a good job, it will hurt the dairy in the future. Timing on the breeding is a big thing. If heifers are lagging on the rst breeding, that’s time that they won’t be back in the milking parlor. She needs to get back to the dairy as quick as she can.

But they’ll say, it’s all right. Seasonal formulations of milk replacers address environmental stresses calves face during different times of the year. With warmer weather, now the added benefit of meeting seasonal challenges also can bring greater efficiency to your calf and your bottom line. Cow’s Match® WarmFront™ Calf Milk Replacer is formulated with a unique combination of carbohydrates that is correctly balanced for when temperatures moderate. This new, seasonal, two-phase system of feeding is a more cost-effective method of feeding calves to their full potential. And, the addition of ClariFly® Larvicide further addresses the seasonal challenge of fly control. It is now even easier to enjoy warmer weather, with the benefits of Cow’s Match® WarmFront™ formula.

SDSU Jackrabbit Dairy Camp, June 7-9 The ninth annual SDSU Jackrabbit Dairy camp will be held June 7-9 at South Dakota State University in Brookings, S.D. The South Dakota State University Dairy club is sponsoring this event for youth between the ages 8-18 who want to enhance their dairy cattle skills and learn about the dairy industry. Campers from all states are welcome to attend. “The SDSU Jackrabbit Dairy Camp is a great place for the youth to learn about the dairy industry. This is a fun event for kids to interact and meet other dairy enthusiasts. The participants learn about both sides of the industry; production and manufacturing. They learn about clipping, showmanship, and judging while also learning about proper care for animals. There are also dairy manufacturing activities, including learning to judge dairy products. “Dairy Camp is a place where campers can put their showmanship and judging skills to the test.” said SDSU Dairy Club past President and counselor, April Johnson. Highlights of the dairy camp include: dairy workshops on tting, showmanship, oral reasons, dairy promotion, and dairy products; hands-on tting demonstration; mock heifer auction Evening activities include: swimming and activity/ movie night; dairy judging contest; dairy products judging contest; showmanship contest. Lodging for two evenings in an SDSU dormitory, meals, and materials provided are included in the $50 registration fee. Registration materials can be obtained by going to the Dairy Science website http://www.sdstate.edu/ds or by emailing sdsudairyclub@gmail.com. The registration deadline is May 25, 2012. Registrations are on a rst come rst served basis as there are a limited number of spaces. 2012 Gopher Dairy Camp, June 10-12 Registration for the 2012 edition of the Gopher Dairy Camp, which will be held June 10 – 12 at the St. Paul campus of the University of Minnesota, is now open. The camp is hosted by the Gopher Dairy Club in cooperation with the Minnesota 4-H Dairy Project Committee with the goal of providing dairy youth the opportunity to strengthen their dairy knowledge and skills as well as to network with other dairy youth that share in their interests. In its 9th year, the Gopher Dairy Camp is open to all youth that have completed grades 6 through 11, but have not yet started 12th grade. Held at a new time of the week— Sunday through Tuesday—the camp’s agenda offers unique workshops, which will allow attendees to excel in the show ring and improve their knowledge of the production and processing of dairy products. Those who attend will be housed in the Bailey Hall dormitory on the St. Paul campus. The primary focus areas of the camp are calf selection, show-ring preparation of dairy cattle and showmanship. Campers have the opportunity to select a calf from the St. Paul Dairy herd via the Gopher Gold Auction, and prepare that calf for showing. Professional cattle tters will be onsite for demonstrations and hands-on assistance in clipping and show-ring preparation. On the nal day of the camp, a showmanship contest will allow campers to showcase what they have learned. Throughout the camp, a number of social mixers are offered, including a trip to a St. Paul Saints baseball game and a night at Tropics Indoor Water Park, in Shoreview. “I really enjoyed the tting and showmanship parts of the Gopher Dairy Camp, it was fun to t our own heifers and take the lead on the process,” said Rachel Coyne of Spring Valley, Wisconsin, who attended the 2011 Gopher Dairy Camp. “Meeting so many new people was a great experience and the counselors made it a good time,” she continued. Because of generous support from camp sponsors, the 2012 Gopher Dairy Camp will be offered at a reduce registration fee of $60, which is all-inclusive and covers the cost of the dormitory, meals, and camp materials. Registration information has been dispersed to local Extension ofces throughout Minnesota, and is also available on-line at http://www.ansci.umn.edu/gopherdairycamp/ or by calling 507-995-7084. The Gopher Dairy Club is the largest and most active student organization on the Twin Cities campus of the University of Minnesota, and its members are students that desire to be actively promote the dairy industry through youth education, dairy judging, scholarship, leadership, professional development, and team-work. For more information on the Gopher Dairy Club, please visit http://www.ansci. umn.edu/gdc/index.htm, and like them on Facebook!

Head of Very Good, High Production 80 HOLSTEIN & COMPOSITE DAIRY CATTLE NOTE: This is a very good herd of especially well uddered, high producing Holstein and composite dairy cattle. No BST or TMR. Along with Holsteins, the herd includes a few Dutch Belts, Holstein Jersey Cross and one Brown Swiss cow. Many cows will be due from sale time on making them timed just right for grazing programs. The herd is primarily AI bred with limited use of a registered Holstein herd sire. AI sires and service sires include: Toy Story, Sharky, Don Juan, Lynch, and Equity, among others. The herd sire most recently used is a registered Affirmed son whose second dam had records to over 32,000 pounds milk and 1200 pounds fat. All cows and bred heifers are vaccinated with Triangle 10, all heifers 6 months and older as of last fall were given Vision 7 and Respishield. All cattle recently poured.
