Days of milking 200-plus cows in 24-stanchion barn long gone By ron johnson Staff writer
MUSCODA, Wis. – When milking began to take 12 hours a day, the Armbrusters knew it was time for a change. They built a milking parlor and freestall barn nearby, cut the amount of time they devote to milking and saw cow production improve. Until August of 2010, this Richland County, Wis., family milked in a flat barn that dated from the 1930s and boasted all of 24 stanchions. Using 12 units, three people milked, with another assisting. As the herd grew, they were shifting cows in and out of that old barn nine times at each milking. The whole process took six hours. “It was a good way to milk when you had 140 to 160 cows,” said Steve Armbruster. “That wasn’t bad. Then we milked in three hours.” But the milking herd eventually topped 200. And it became tougher to get employees to stay. So Steve and his brothers, David and Eric, began to seriously plan their Red Brae Dairy’s modern milking center and freestall barn. With an eye toward modernization, in 2007 they bought 50 acres on a hill. It’s half a mile from the original set of buildings and affords a good view of Highway 60 and the old Wisconsin River floodplain just to the south. “Everybody told me this would be a good place to put a new facility. I questioned it at first because it’s almost half a mile from the other place,” Steve said. “But it’s turned out that it isn’t bad at all.” The Armbrusters do need to haul feed and move cattle that half mile. But the new site has another

The family also includes Eric, a third brother, and their father, Edgar. advantage. “We can see the old place really well,” Steve said. “We can tell more what’s going on down there now while we’re milking than we could when we were in the (old) barn.” They knew they wanted a new, efficient milking facility. But what else? Steve had several ideas, having initially thought about building in 1993, the year the Armbrusters brought their cattle and machinery from the southeast part of the state, near Eagle, Wis. “The farm we rented became subdivided. So we had to move,” Steve said. They looked for a farm to buy in southern Wisconsin and eventually settled on Richland County. “Of all the areas we visited, I liked this one the best – its scenery and good land,” Steve said. Steve said he’s happy they did not build in 1993. “The first freestall/parlor setup we visited, I didn’t really care for,” he said. “And I’m sure glad we didn’t build one then. The
stalls weren’t designed right, and they were talking about packing as many cows as you could in a barn.” By the time the Armbrusters broke ground for their new facility, in October of 2009, they had a pretty good idea as to what they wanted. They’d planned for a year, and by then Steve had visited ap-

proximately 40 Wisconsin farms, viewing freestall barns. In the final analysis, two main things ranked at the top of the Armbrusters’ dairy facility list: A comfortable, efficient place to milk and facilities the cows could do well in. That’s especially important for the Armbrusters because they have not one, but two

registered herds. One is Holstein and one is Brown Swiss. For the milking parlor, the brothers chose a Heritage double-10 herringbone. Steve said they opted for the herringbone style because, in it, cows are milked more from the side, and that’s what cows and people were accustomed to in the stanchion barn. “We had hardly any trouble getting our cows used to this parlor. They walk in straight and just turn a little bit and they’re ready to go,” Steve said. As for the building itself, they chose a steel frame. The cow area has clear spans, with just a few supporting poles off the feed alleys. “That opens up the whole barn and adds a lot more light and air. And it’s a lot more attractive,” said Steve. For cow comfort, the Armbrusters chose two stall sizes. Those for mature cows are 51 inches wide. If a stall faces the outside wall, its 10 feet long, but it’s a foot shorter if it faces inward. Smaller stalls were provided for two-year-olds. These stalls are 48 inches wide and 8 feet long. It’s a four-row barn with 240 stalls, plus a bedded pack area for older cows and those recently fresh. In the stall area there’s one headlock per cow, so they can all eat at the same time. This barn has box fans, a vented ridge, drive-through feeding, sidewall curtains and sand bedding. Stalls are cleaned and groomed at each milking. The barn also has two motorized cow brushes, installed this past winter. “They’re the things to have. The cows just love them,” said Steve. “The cows are in the sand all the time, so that’s got to be itchy. This double-10 herringbone parlor is a far cry from the 1930s-era barn Steve Armbruster and his brothers and parents milked in for years. When the milking string topped 200 cows, each milking took six hours, using 12 units. Milking involved moving cows in and out of the barn nine times. after a short time without detecting a cow. Steve said visitors often remark about how clean Red Brae Dairy’s cows are. The cows are also calm. When a stranger enters the barn, the cattle seem to not even notice, but remain calm. “That’s the way we want them,” Steve said. Manure management is quite easy for the Armbrusters. Using a skid-steer, manure is pushed to one end of the barn and into a cross gutter that has a shuttle scraper in it. From there, manure gets pushed into a reception pit. Next, it flows by gravity into a concrete-lined lagoon that can hold nine months’ worth of manure. “It’s the ideal manure system,” said Steve. “We aren’t pumping any manure. It keeps the barn nice and clean. There’s no manure getting pushed across feed alleys.” Other amenities of the new facility include rubber mats on the milking parlor’s cow platforms; heated floors in the office, break room, parlor and holding pen; and a commercial grade washer and dryer in the utility room. “We really didn’t cut any corners,” said Steve. “When you first think about building, you figure something like this will cost too much, so you cut costs. But then you look at the cheaper-built barns and don’t like them, so then you look at the better-built places and like them, so you build that way.” Apparently, the cows like the new facility. Steve said they’re averaging about 10 percent more milk, and the somatic cell count (SCC) is lower. The Holsteins are at 24,500 pounds of milk, with a 3.8 percent fat test and 3.2 percent protein. Meanwhile, the Brown Swiss are chugging along at 20,925 pounds of milk, a 4.34 fat test and a 3.6 percent protein test. For SCC, the Holsteins are at 117,000 so far this year, while the Brown Swiss are at 107,000. Steve attributes much of the lower SCC to the sand bedding. At the old barn, the cows were in an outside lot and on a bedding pack. “The cows are really clean. I think it’s probably a better milking system, too,” said
Steve. “A parlor is a better way to milk a cow. It just flows. Cows come in, you milk them and then they leave.” Milking still takes a lot of time. Steve estimated it at five hours for an employee and him to milk 280 cows. The Armbrusters have two full-time employees, Jerritt Brewer and Jamie Kern. Although they’re pretty much retired, the Armbrusters’ parents, Edgar and Phyllis, provide valuable help. Edgar drives tractor when needed, and Phyllis handles some of the calf feeding. Along with milking, Steve takes care of fresh cows and baby calves and handles the Brown Swiss matings. Eric is in charge of “everything that happens in the barn,” said Steve, including bedding stalls, bringing feed over from the other farm, trimming hooves, and handling the Holstein matings. David mixes feed, beds and feeds heifers and handles the cropping. The Armbrusters own 400 tillable acres and grow corn for silage, alfalfa, and a bit of double-cropped triticale and ryegrass. Even with the new facility, there’s plenty of work to go around. The brothers still don’t get much time off, but, “it’s better than it was,” Steve said. He uses his time away from the farm to attend World Dairy Expo and judge Brown Swiss shows around the country. Steve is on the World Dairy Expo committee that oversees that event’s cattle shows and has judged cattle at Expo. The brothers don’t have any herd expansions planned. But, “there is room for another 100-cow barn,” Steve said. For now, though, the Armbrusters are happy with their milking and cow care environment. They’re also happy that they’re no longer milking 200-plus cows in nine shifts. Of the new facility, Steve said, “It’s nice to work in a nice place. We were pretty primitive in the other barn. People couldn’t believe we could get that many cows milked in that small barn.” Building a modern barn and milking center, he said, was the right thing to do. “This will keep me farming a little longer,” he said.

ALEXANDRIA, Minn. – The new European Union (EU) somatic cell count standard was a hot topic during the 2012 Upper Midwest Dairy Industry Association-International Association of Food Protection (UMDIA-IAFP) spring meeting on April 19 in Alexandria, Minn. Carrie Sayasithsena, National Dairy Program coordinator, and Chuck Cruickshank, Midwest Dairy Association senior vice president of industry relations, covered “The New EU Health Certification Program” and “What does the 400,000 Marketing Standard Mean to Consumers?”, respectively, before joining Hank Braegelmann of Melrose Dairy Proteins and Jim Klein of Bongards’ Creameries for a panel discussion moderated by Jeff Reneau of the University of Minnesota. While the idea that local milk could end up in the EU may seem far-fetched, it is a likely concept. Currently, one out of eight tankers of milk is shipped overseas, Cruickshank said.
“We’ve got to look at exports as a consistent longterm growth market. Demand overseas will grow faster than we can supply if things don’t change.”

“There is real potential for our milk to end up in a lot of places,” Cruickshank said. “If you think your milk doesn’t matter to exports, you couldn’t be farther from the truth.” There are currently 27 countries with EU export certification, and another four countries that are aligned with EU standards. “[EU certification] is not required to get out of the country, but it is required to get into the European Union,” Sayasithsena said. The Dairy Grading Branch of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) is in charge of issuing export certificates. Last year they issued a total of 20,000 certificates; of those, around 7,000 were for the EU. The new EU standards, which went into effect on Jan. 1, 2012, require all farms to test SCC monthly. The rolling mean over a three-month period must be in compliance with the 400,000 SCC EU marketing standards. A Certificate of Conformance (COC) must be provided by the milk supplier to the USDA Agriculture Marketing Service (AMS), allowing them to link raw

LONG PRAIRIE, Minn. – Technically speaking, Brad Thelen got in the business of trading cattle when he was just 14 years old. “The first animal I bought was a baby Jersey calf out at Granite City Livestock,” Thelen said. “I kept it a few months, sold it and bought two back.” He was hooked from the get-go – hooked on the challenge of making money and proving animals. Thelen has taken that enthusiasm and turned it into a career, most recently as the new owner of the Long Prairie Livestock Auction in Long Prairie, Minn. He officially took over ownership of the barn – previously owned by Joe Varner – on April 1. “We’ve had some big sales here in the last month,” he said. Thelen grew up on his family’s dairy farm near Albany, Minn., where he continues to own 50 percent with his brother, Brian. He got into professionally trading livestock in 1996, when he was licensed and bonded through the state of Minnesota. “I just fell into it,” he said of the career. That’s the way things worked out for most of his ventures since then as well – he simply fell into them, which includes reopening the sales barn in Hutchinson, Minn., in 2009. “Because of my reputation, they (the owners of the barn) got a hold of me. I thought it would be a good opportunity, and I’ve been there three years now,” Thelen said. Similarly, he was contacted about taking ownership of the Long Prairie Livestock Auction. “It’s a local sales barn and he (the previous owner) wanted me to own is so it would stay in business. He didn’t want it to be closed down,” he said. Thelen doesn’t limit his trading skills to livestock alone. He also runs a machinery consignment lot in Long Prairie, with the next sale on May 26. With so many undertakings, time management is a key for Thelen. In Long Prairie, cattle sales are every Tuesday night at 6:30, horse sales are every fourth Friday at 6 p.m. and there are two to three exotic sales per year. In Hutchinson, there are feeder sales every Wednesday night. Between the two sales barns, the machinery lot, the dairy farm, doing on-farm livestock and machinery auctions with auctioneer Mark Ziemer of New London, Minn., and continuing to do some independent livestock trading, Thelen leads a hectic lifestyle – and puts on a lot of miles, mainly within a 150-mile radius. “My new truck has 40,000 miles on it and it’s only four months old,” he said. “... I stay busy.” In all of this, Thelen said his favorite part is meeting new people on a weekly basis, and reconnecting with old friends. “Last week I was at a sale and I saw someone I hadn’t seen in eight years,” he said. “It’s pretty rewarding.” Thelen is excited about the latest turn in his career, and he’s optimistic about the future of the Long Prairie Livestock Auction. As for his next venture, only time will tell, he said.

Minnesota Agriculture Commissioner Dave Frederickson says this growing agriculture and food sector needs and deserves support from public institutions like the Department of Agriculture and the University. “Consumer demand for organic food and other products is surging,” Frederickson said. “We need task force members who will share their ideas and opinions on ways we can help Minnesota’s organic farmers and processors meet that demand.” Members from the following categories or sectors are needed: Two farmers using organic agriculture methods; one organic processor; one organic wholesaler and/or distributor of organic products; one member of the University of Minnesota faculty; one member representing a nonprofit producer organization; one member representing the interests of the public; and, one member representing the interests of consumers. All members must be residents of Minnesota willing to serve a one-year term. Half-day meetings are held three or four times per year; members receive reimbursement for travel.

Labor Department statement on withdrawal of proposed rule dealing with children who work in agricultural vocations The U.S. Department of Labor today issued the following statement regarding the withdrawal of a proposed rule dealing with children who work in agricultural vocations: “The Obama administration is firmly committed to promoting family farmers and respecting the rural way of life, especially the role that parents and other family members play in passing those traditions down through the generations. The Obama administration is also deeply committed to listening and responding to what Americans across the country have to say about proposed rules and regulations. “As a result, the Department of Labor is announcing today the withdrawal of the proposed rule dealing with children under the age of 16 who work in agricultural vocations. “The decision to withdraw this rule – including provisions to define the ‘parental exemption’ – was made in response to thousands of comments expressing concerns about the effect of the proposed rules on small family-owned farms. To be clear, this regulation will not be pursued for the duration of the Obama administration. “Instead, the Departments of Labor and Agriculture will work with rural stakeholders – such as the American Farm Bureau Federation, the National Farmers Union, the Future Farmers of America, and 4-H – to develop an educational program to reduce accidents to young workers and promote safer agricultural working practices.”

Pasture walk focuses on intensive grazing, May 23 Pasture improvement and rotational grazing are key topics for many beef and dairy producers, but one of the big challenges becomes subdivision, fencing, and watering systems over rolling or rough terrain. These topics will be discussed at a pasture walk at the farm of Greg Koether on Wednesday, May 23, at 1 p.m. Koether has been intensively grazing for many years in his pastures near Giard, Iowa. He has multiple subdivided pastures with various clover seeding improvements and an above ground pipeline watering system. He has also created a unique system to move the water tank using a sled system behind an ATV. Koether recently installed automatic gates allowing for paddock moves multiple times per day. Marc Strobbe, the Farm Viability Coordinator for Practical Farmers of Iowa will attend to share information on their beginning farmer and mentoring program. NRCS staff will also be on hand to discuss cost share programs to assist in pasture improvement and the organic cost share program. The Koether pasture is located at 14509 Gold Mine Rd, north of Giard. Pasture walks are informal educational programs designed to demonstrate one or two key areas of pasture management, as well as answer any questions you might have. Each has a slightly different focus and producers are invited to attend any that are of interest to improving their own pasture management. All producers who are dependent on forage production are invited to attend. SDSU Jackrabbit Dairy Camp, June 7-9 The ninth annual SDSU Jackrabbit Dairy camp will be held June 7-9 at South Dakota State University in Brookings, S.D. The South Dakota State University Dairy club is sponsoring this event for youth between the ages 8-18 who want to enhance their dairy cattle skills and learn about the dairy industry. Campers from all states are welcome to attend. “The SDSU Jackrabbit Dairy Camp is a great place for the youth to learn about the dairy industry. This is a fun event for kids to interact and meet other dairy enthusiasts. The participants learn about both sides of the industry; production and manufacturing. They learn about clipping, showmanship, and judging while also learning about proper care for animals. There are also dairy manufacturing activities, including learning to judge dairy products. “Dairy Camp is a place where campers can put their showmanship and judging skills to the test.” said SDSU Dairy Club past President and counselor, April Johnson. Highlights of the dairy camp include: dairy workshops on fitting, showmanship, oral reasons, dairy promotion, and dairy products; hands-on fitting demonstration; mock heifer auction Evening activities include: swimming and activity/movie night; dairy judging contest; dairy products judging contest; showmanship contest. Lodging for two evenings in an SDSU dormitory, meals, and materials provided are included in the $50 registration fee. Registrations are on a first come first served basis as there are a limited number of spaces. 2012 Gopher Dairy Camp, June 10-12 Registration for the 2012 edition of the Gopher Dairy Camp, which will be held June 10 – 12 at the St. Paul campus of the University of Minnesota, is now open. The camp is hosted by the Gopher Dairy Club in cooperation with the Minnesota 4-H Dairy Project Committee with the goal of providing dairy youth the opportunity to strengthen their dairy knowledge and skills as well as to network with other dairy youth that share in their interests. In its 9th year, the Gopher Dairy Camp is open to all youth that have completed grades 6 through 11, but have not yet started 12th grade. Held at a new time of the week—Sunday through Tuesday—the camp’s agenda offers unique workshops, which will allow attendees to excel in the show ring and improve their knowledge of the production and processing of dairy products. Those who attend will be housed in the Bailey Hall dormitory on the St. Paul campus. The primary focus areas of the camp are calf selection, show-ring preparation of dairy cattle and showmanship. Campers have the opportunity to select a calf from the St. Paul Dairy herd via the Gopher Gold Auction, and prepare that calf for showing. Professional cattle fitters will be on-site for demonstrations and handson assistance in clipping and show-ring preparation. On the final day of the camp, a showmanship contest will allow campers to showcase what they have learned. Throughout the camp, a number of social mixers are offered, including a trip to a St. Paul Saints baseball game and a night at Tropics Indoor Water Park, in Shoreview. “I really enjoyed the fitting and showmanship parts of the Gopher Dairy Camp, it was fun to fit our own heifers and take the lead on the process,” said Rachel Coyne of Spring Valley, Wisconsin, who attended the 2011 Gopher Dairy Camp. “Meeting so many new people was a great experience and the counselors made it a good time,” she continued. Because of generous support from camp sponsors, the 2012 Gopher Dairy Camp will be offered at a reduce registration fee of $60, which is all-inclusive and covers the cost of the dormitory, meals, and camp materials. Now he has furthered the world record to a remarkable 2 million units. “This is an event that might never occur again in history,” Wilson notes. “With the genetic progress possible in the dairy cattle industry today, through new technologies such as bull evaluations based on genomics, it is very possible that no other bull will ever reach the 2 million unit mark.” Several factors contributed to TOYSTORY’s production success. TOYSTORY has possessed a genetic package desired by dairy producers around the globe. His genetics were first released globally in November 2005. Today, 2 million units later, he remains a sellout bull with semen sold across nearly 50 countries. TOYSTORY’s genetics and the high-quality care provided by Genex production division staff have also enabled the 11-year-old bull to remain healthy and agile for optimal semen collection. “TOYSTORY has produced 2 million units, has always been above average in sire fertility and basically remains a sellout bull – even now, six and a half years after his initial debut. Resources empower farmers to save power A new web page aims to streamline the energy efficiency process for Minnesota dairy farmers and direct them to the best resources for learning about, implementing and financing efficiency improvements. DairyEfficiency.org was created by The Minnesota Project and includes co-op rebate information, suggested steps for pursuing upgrades, and links to funding opportunities. Electricity is a significant cost on most dairies and dairy farmers are often keen on ways they can save energy and money. On the average American farm, direct energy use accounts for 5 to 10 percent of expenditures. In terms of electricity used, Minnesota dairies show the largest energy costs, followed by corn growers, swine, soybeans, and other agricultural crops. Energy audits are a tool that farmers can use to identify areas of high energy use and determine which efficiency improvements have the best payback time. The Minnesota Project recently directed a Farm Energy Auditor Training Program with 20 students. The goals of the program were to train participants to conduct on-site farm and rural business energy audits, calculate the baseline energy use of operations, and provide recommendations along with assistance on writing grant applications for federal and utility efficiency programs. While there have been similar programs aimed at training auditors for residential energy work, this program represents the first in the state and one of the few in the country to focus specifically on agriculture. To offer a glimpse at what the audit process looks like, The Minnesota Project produced a short web video entitled, “Saving Energy on the Farm: What is an Energy Audit?” To watch the video, search for it on YouTube or follow the link at mnproject.org. In addition to these resources, The Minnesota Project has been assembling case studies of Minnesota dairy farmers who have taken steps to make their dairies more energy efficient. Each case study shares the story of a farmer and offers his or her experience as an example that others might learn from, as well as to help the general public understand the dairy industry better.
