Reclaiming sand that should be under cows
Minglewood Inc. installs Danish sand separation system
By Danielle Nauman danielle.n@dairystar.com
DEER PARK, Wis. –Constant improvement in cow comfort, better management for both soil and cow health and a watchful eye toward sustainability all play a role in the decisions the Solum and Quist families make in operating their farm.
That thought process led them to install a new type of sand separation system on their Polk County dairy farm, Minglewood Inc., near Deer Park.
“We have been looking at different sand separating systems for a couple of years, but we have never been completely happy with the results we have seen,” Kristin Quist said. “When we saw the sand sample from this system, we were blown away and made the decision almost immediately. We felt like we had nally found something that matched our goals for cow health.”
Quist is the fth generation of her family to be involved in the family farm. Quist and her husband, Jacob, along with her parents, Kevin and Roxie Solum, milk 1,230 cows.
The herd is milked two ways; 480 are milked with eight robotic milking systems while the remaining cows are milked in the farm’s double-9 parlor.
The milk produced at Minglewood is shipped to the Burnett Dairy Cooperative.
“Everything we do here is pointed at cow comfort and health,” Quist said. “What held us back from purchasing a system earlier was we never were happy with the sand we saw with other systems; it was always coarser than we wanted to use. The sand we reclaim using this system is so much better for the cows.”
The Quists and Solums spent 2022 planning for and installing a Stjernholm sand separation system, which is made in Denmark and was installed by Midwest Ag and Commercial Contractors LLC in Menomonie. The system was rst used Dec. 8, 2022.
The barns at Minglewood have a gravity ow system for moving manure to the pit. Before the installation
of the system, Quist said everything from the barns went into the pit and ultimately on the elds. With this system, Quist said they are reclaiming about 98% of the sand. By comparison, most other systems they considered reclaim about 80%, Quist said.
SAND-MANURE
“Besides cow health, this system will allow us to better care for our soil health, too, keeping the sand out of the eld,” Quist said.
Quist said the manure goes into a holding tank where a series of piston pumps moves it into the sys-
tem, which works like a cycle, spinning it through three augers to separate the sand from the water and manure. Turn

Quist said the volume of cows determines the number of augers necessary, and that they learned Stjernholm’s rule of thumb was one auger per 500 cows. It takes about 3 to 3.5 gallons of fresh water to keep the entire system running, and it uses around 80 to 85 amps of electricity.
“It has to reach 3.5% dry matter to leave the system,” Quist said. “If it’s not there, it goes back into the system to go through again.”
Once it is dry enough, the sand is conveyed out of the system to a pile, while the manure ber and water go to the pit. Sand is moved from under the conveyors, allowing it to sit and continue to dry. Quist said that while sand can be reused within 24 hours of it going through the system,
ideally it would be able to sit for a couple of days.
“There has been a bit of a learning curve, getting to know the system, but we haven’t had any major issues with it,” Quist said. “We have learned that the key to keeping it running smoothly is the consistency of the manure that goes into to. We try to keep it at about the same level of dry matter.”
Quist said the low number of moving parts involved in the system helps keep maintenance simple and should result in less wear and tear over time.

changed to work within the system, but Quist said the difference is hardly noticeable. Before installation of the system, they used frac sand, which was too ne. The sand they use now is from a glass plant.
Before the installation of the sand system, Quist said they went through about 16 quad loads of sand each week to bed the cows.
“We’ve only been running the system for about four months now, and we don’t have a stockpile of reclaimed sand built up yet, so we are still bringing in about four loads of
sand a week,” Quist said. “Once we get a stock of sand built up, we should only need to bring in maybe one load a week. That is better for our local community and our local roads.”
With the savings on purchased sand, Quist said the system will pay for itself within ve years.
“With all of the different benets, it really works out to be a good investment for our farm,” Quist said. “For all our research, this was the best system we could nd that produced sand like what we feel should be under our cows.”

Ravages of disease in calf raising
Renaud presents on morbidity, mortality, mitigation
By Amy Kyllo amy.k@star-pub.com
PRIOR LAKE, Minn. – Disease passing through calves can mean decreased weight gains, more deaths and other unwanted consequences for calf raisers.
Understanding these consequences, nding great calves and managing them well to mitigate these issues are key to success for producers.
These concepts were all part of a presentation by Dr. David Renaud, an assistant professor at the University of Guelph. His session, “It takes a team! Finding value in source farm communication,” was part of the Dairy Calf and Heifer Association annual conference April 1113 in Prior Lake.
Renaud focused on the effects of diarrhea and respiratory disease on calves then spoke on what to look for and develop in calves for increased health. He also spoke about the management practices and traits of farms with low disease and mortality rates in calves.
Renaud suggests two solutions to solve the issues that come from unhealthy calves.
First, he encourages making sure calves are fed good nutrition. Second, he suggests bringing in calves with high levels of passive immunity and high body weight while minimizing transportation and ideally not presenting clinical signs of disease.
“I think a lot of the things that we can do as the calf raiser are important,” Renaud said. “It really comes down to selecting the right calf and making sure we’re bringing the right calves into the facility.”
Renaud said good nutrition begins at birth with high-quality colostrum and high immunoglobin transfer. From his research at the University of Guelph, their study found that calves who only received 10 grams or more per liter of IgG had a 12% mortality rate which made them three times more likely to die than calves that received 25 grams or more IgG per liter.
Renaud recommends that calves be bottle fed or tubed colostrum.
Size, he said, is important for a number of reasons.
“High body weight, that bodyweight at arrival to calf facility, is one of the ones that’s most consistently associated with morbidity and mortality,” Renaud said.
High body weight is associated with less days with both diarrhea and respiratory disease.
However, one of the factors contributing to higher body weight is birth weight, which can pose issues of increased calving problems at birth.
Having healthy calves is important, especially considering the effects that disease has on them. Ren-
aud presented research from one of his Ph.D. students showing the effects of diarrhea on calves.
Diarrhea was associated with less growth, increased mortality rates and increased respiratory disease.
Calves who had diarrhea for ve days lost 180 grams of growth per day (6.35 ounces), and calves with diarrhea for nine days lost 250 grams of growth per day (8.82 ounces) compared to their healthy counterparts.
Calves with diarrhea for nine days had a 15% mortality rate, which was 11 percentage points higher than their healthy counterparts.
Calves with diarrhea were also far more likely to be treated for respiratory disease which in itself also has negative effects on calves. Like diarrhea, respiratory disease is associated with less growth and increased mortality but is also associated with decreased feed efciency.
Calves with clinical signs of respiratory disease for more than ve days need an extra kilogram of feed per kilogram of weight gain compared to healthy calves.
“If we have calves that have respiratory disease, we’re seeing really big effects,” Renaud said. “Especially as it become more pronounced or more prolonged.”
When it comes to farm management practices for overall decreased mortality rates, Renaud’s research identied several key factors.
First, dairy farms with better surveillance and check ins every three hours or less for their calving pens showed decreased mortality rates in the calves they raised compared to other farms. This level of surveillance likely meant these farms were better able to monitor and intervene during challenging calvings.
Bedding sources were also a factor in mortality rates. Using chopped straw and shavings was associated with a higher mortality rate compared to long-stemmed straw.
“I think the long straw bedding can help, especially in the wintertime, to help these calves thermoregulate so that they’re not spending as much of their maintenance reserves trying to stay warm,” Renaud said.
Another factor on farms with low mortality rates was whether or not their veterinarian took an active interest in their calf program.
Renaud said that prioritization of resources, ease of implementation of management practices, ethical obligations, economic impact and involvement of outside professionals like the calf buyer are all part of dairy farm decision making for implementing improved calf care.
“There’s lots of barriers you have to think about when you’re trying to implement change on dairy farms,” Renaud said. “We’re really starting to dive into a little bit more of the psychology in terms of how can we motivate change, and if we can understand that a little bit better, I think that can lead to improvements in calf care.”

Questions for parents:
Tell us your favorite experience of working with Cora. It wasn’t really a favorite experience, but it was memorable when she got kicked in the hand by a fresh heifer while she was milking and ended up breaking two bones in her hand. We did not realize it was broken, and she continued to milk cows and play basketball for two weeks. She thought it was getting better but then fell on it during a basketball game. That’s when she went to the doctor, and we found out it was broken.
What qualities does Cora have that benet the farm? She is responsible, pays attention to details, is observant with the cows and caring. Now that she has her license, she takes it upon herself to drive over to check on heifers.
Questions for Cora:
What are your responsibilities on the farm? Milking and checking the heifer barn. In the summer, I take feed out to the pasture and check on the animals that are out there. I also take responsibility for the registration papers and record births and breeding dates.
When did you begin helping on the farm? I have been helping since I could walk basically. It’s always been normal to be outside working. I have always loved the calves too.
How has working on the farm shaped your character? It has helped my work ethic and makes me care about things.
What do you love most about farm life? I like seeing calves be born and the cycle of how they grow. I like showing Brown Swiss at the fair, but my favorite part about that is seeing the projects develop.
What is one thing you have learned from working alongside your parents? How to work hard and that there are no sick days.
What are your future plans? I plan to attend North Central Technical College in Wausau, Wisconsin, for an associate degree in dairy science. After that, I plan to work as a herd manager and eventually come back to the home farm to take over with my brother.

ABBY WIEDMEYER/DAIRY STAR Doug, Cora and Jennifer Brandau take a break from chores April 6 at their dairy farm near Wilton, Wisconsin. Cora’s farm responsibili es include milking and checking the heifer barn.
When do you do chores?
Every day after school, and mornings and nights on the weekends. I also help with eldwork during the day, and I help some of our neighbors with eldwork too.
What is your favorite and least favorite chore? My favorite chore is doing eldwork in the summer because I get to work with tractors. My least favorite chore is working with the calves because they can be a little dumb when I’m trying to feed them.
What is your favorite animal on your farm? A Brown Swiss cow named Jimmy. She’s about 10 years old. I like her breed; Swiss are pretty cool. I grew up with her, and we’re pretty close.
What is your favorite subject in school? Math. I feel like I do math well compared to other subjects. I do pretty good with the other subjects, too, but math is the one I am best at.
What is something you have learned in school recently? In woodworking class, I learned how to make rabbit cuts.
What do you want to be when you grow up? A beef farmer or a welder.
If you had a farm, describe what it would look like. It would look pretty much like our farm but maybe the barn would not be as big. Maybe I would have a freestall barn. I would also have Case IH equipment.
What is your favorite dairy treat? Ice cream. Blue Moon is my favorite avor.
What is your favorite game to play at home and on the farm? I like to play Farming Simulator and ride four-wheelers on our land.
Are you involved in any activities? I play baseball and soccer, and I just joined FFA this year. My favorite activity is baseball because it’s fun and I get to hang out with my friends. It’s also nice to hit the ball.

Reducing mastitis by decreasing pathogens in bedding
microbial solu ons to control mas s-causing pathogens in bedding made from recycled manure solids.
Saylor presents nonchemical solution at CPDE
By Jan Lefebvre
jan.l@star-pub.com
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Bacteria may be the answer to keep mastitis at bay.
Keeping mastitis under control by applying targeted microbial solutions to bedding was the topic of Dr. Ben Saylor’s presentation March 29 at the Central Plains Dairy Expo in Sioux Falls.
Saylor, who is a dairy technical services manager for Arm & Hammer Animal Nutrition, gave results of eld tests conducted by the company for its product, CERTILLUS Eco Dairy Bedding, that has been shown to reduce pathogen loads in recycled manure solids. Saylor demonstrated how selective bacilli, or good bacteria, can be a nonchemical
way to control harmful bacteria in recycled manure bedding.
Saylor began by providing information from a study that determined the cost of each mastitis case to a dairy operation.
“We know that clinical mastitis is the most common cause of adult dairy cow morbidity in the U.S., and we know it’s expensive,” Saylor said.
The goal of the study was to determine the cost of a single case of mastitis. They divided the cost into direct costs and indirect costs. The study narrowed down direct costs to diagnostics, therapeutics, nonsaleable milk, death loss, labor and vet service, which totaled, on average, $128 per case of mastitis.
Indirect costs were determined as well.
“These costs are a little more hidden but very real and actually more expensive,” Saylor said.

One-On-One
with Aaron Johnson Johnson Dairy Supply in Viroqua, Wisconsin
What kind of vehicle do you drive and how many miles do you have on it? I drive a 2006 Peterbilt with 230,000 miles on it.
What area do you cover and what is special about the people you work with in this area? I cover Richland and Vernon counties and parts of Crawford, Juneau, Monroe and Sauk counties. My customers are more like friends than business contacts.
What does a typical day look like for you? I am usually on the road by 8 a.m. and have 5-10 stops per day. My farms are anywhere from 20-200 miles from me. My farthest customer is one hour and 10 minutes from me. During the summer, I run my routes from 4 a.m. until noon so I am done in time to coach my son’s baseball team, the Westby/ Coon Valley Junior Legion.
How many different products do you carry in your vehicle? I carry thousands of products in my truck. The inventory has changed from small farmers using 5-gallon jugs of products to large farms using 55- to 275-gallon totes.
How did you get started in this career? I graduated from Southwest Technical College in 1998 and saw a
job notice in the Richland Observer for Agri-Dairy. I was hired to do scheduled service but moved to the route truck before too long. One day while I was at a farm, the IBA distributor pulled in to borrow oil from the farmer because he was having vehicle trouble. I was 20 years old at the time, and he said I was the perfect man for the job so I took over his IBA route. At one time, I had two trucks and drove one while my dad drove the other.
What is your favorite thing about this role in the dairy industry? It’s the people. Helping dairymen get results while trying different products or protocols. There is nothing better than hearing a customer say thanks and that a product or suggestion really worked.
What have you learned from your customers? People buy from people. Customers don’t care about you until you show that you care about them. I love helping my customers with the challenges that arise in this day and age with dairy sanitation and milk quality issues. I simply love what I do.
What is the most challenging thing about your job? When farmers sell out. The saddest part is that because of so many farms exiting the industry, my kids will never have the opportunity that I did to get to know the lifestyle.
How has your position evolved from when you started until now? My position has stayed the same because I am a one-man show. I do the ordering, loading, selling, driving and the book work. What kind of on-going training or regulations do you have for your position? I do trainings with various vendors of IBA and attend district meetings with colleagues. I also have to keep up to date with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation restrictions and licensing.
What are some of the most common items you provide? Dairy sanitation and udder hygiene products, animal health products and after-market milker parts. I also sell a lot of forage inoculant and hay preservative which many people don’t know. That is a good way for me to continue to serve farmers when they sell their cows and transition to exclusively growing crops.
Tell us about one of your most memorable moments while going about your work day. I got back to the shop one Friday afternoon around 4 p.m. It was a bright, sunny January day. A farmer called and said he was out of teat dip, and I wasn’t due to his farm until Monday. I made a special trip to his farm to deliver the product, and when I
left his place, it was still bright and sunny. It was a 50-minute drive home, and about halfway through the drive, the radio DJ said to watch out for inclement weather. I wondered what they were talking about but gured it out a minute later when a blizzard came out of nowhere, and I was stuck in a whiteout. The snow was so wet and heavy that if I took my foot off the gas pedal, the truck would just stop. I hate winter driving, and that day my worst fears came true. I made it home safely but was terried. What kind of music do you listen to while driving and what is your favorite snack on the road? I enjoy 80s rock music and listen to 105.9 FM. I typically do not eat while I’m on the road; I usually just have two bottles of water. But if I do get a snack, it’s a pack of VonRuden beef sticks.
Tell us about your family. My wife, Kim, is an elementary school principal. My oldest son, Caleb, is a junior at Westby High School. My youngest son, Jadon, is a freshman at Westby High School.
What do you enjoy doing in your spare time? Yard work, coaching baseball and watching my kids play sports in the winter.

We Have What
Indirect costs include things like future milk production loss, premature culling loss and reproductive losses that may happen in the future.
Indirect costs on average were determined by the study to be $316 per case of mastitis, bringing the total of direct and indirect costs to $444 per mastitis case at a milk price of $21 per hundredweight. Saylor said this cost is inuenced by many economic variables such as milk price, heifer replacement cost, non-saleable milk price, feed price and market cow price. No matter the variables, however, the cost is high.
Saylor also said he thought the model did not account for all losses. He cited a paper from 2021, “Intergenerational cycle of disease: maternal mastitis is associated with poor daughter performance in dairy cows.” The paper shared research showing that daughters born from cows with elevated somatic cell counts later had poor performance themselves, with their age at rst calving and somatic cell counts being higher on average and their milk being lower in fat as well. Therefore, the costs incurred from mastitis become generational.
Studies show that one-third of all mastitis infections on a dairy are caused by environmental pathogens that originate outside of the parlor, primarily in dairy bedding. As cows lie in bedding, pathogens can colonize the teat canal. Reducing cases of environmental mastitis, Saylor said, requires control of outgrowth of those mastitis-causing organisms in bedding.
Saylor’s group at Arm & Hammer ran tests to isolate mastitis-causing pathogens and see how they could be manipulated by bacilli being added to bedding using targeted microbial solutions. The bacilli form spores, so they are hardy antimicrobials and can survive different environments.
After initial tests, Arm & Hammer focused on reducing four mastitis-causing culprits: E. coli, coliforms, Klebseilla and Group D streptococci.
There are tools being used on bedding that reduce such pathogens, but there are downsides to them, Saylor said. Lime or acid-based products offer some protection but have risks to employee health and safety. Although drying compost reduces pathogens, as soon as it is used, the same bacterial outgrowth appears. There is a big difference in number of pathogens in unused material compared to that in the stall.
“As you would expect, across all four pathogen types, we see signicantly higher counts in the stall compared to that fresh material,” Saylor said. “That led to our biggest question: How do we control this outgrowth?”
After looking at bedding types,
pathogens were lowest in sand and highest in recycled manure solids.
“We understand that recycled manure solids represent both a cost effective and sustainable source of bedding for dairies, but the pathogen levels in manure solids and the subsequent risk of high somatic cell count and mastitis not only challenge current users of manure solids in the industry but might be preventing adoption of manure solids by other producers,” Saylor said. “For our rst eld trials, we wanted to look at green or composted RMS bedding.”
For the next step, Saylor’s group collected bedding sources and tried bacilli strains to see how they did against mastitis-causing pathogens. Then they selected the two best strains to create a water-soluble formula and tried it through dairy farm eld tests.
At ve dairies in the Upper Midwest, they removed moisture from composted manure piles with a screw press and applied their formula with a sprayer to the RMS before it was used as bedding. They chose dairies where new bedding was applied multiple times per week into deep beds.
Saylor’s group also conducted a side-by-side test at a California dairy business that had two almost identical sites – 750 cows each with the same bedding and milking systems – so they could compare results of a site with no treatment to one with treatment.
Results from all the eld tests showed signicant pathogen reductions in bedding material. Following the progression of the herds at the sites, all herds saw on average a somatic cell count reduction of 57,000 and fewer mastitis events of on average nine per month.
Arm & Hammer launched its product in January, and Saylor said it is already being used on dairies across the U.S.
Saylor said a 2,000-cow dairy would need to use 85 pounds of the product per day; the per year cost would be just under $35,000, which equates to $0.0475 per cow per day. However, this would lead to, on average, an anticipated reduction of 25% fewer clinical mastitis cases valued at $444 per case, or a savings of $22,000. It would also lead to better milk quality premiums at $0.20/cwt, or $104,000 in revenue. Therefore, the net gain on average, Saylor said, would be $91,000 for that herd size.
The next steps are to look into more application methods and how the product might fare with sand bedding.
With the growing use of recycled manure solids and other forms of sustainable bedding, the test results suggest a positive outlook for non-chemical solutions to reduce pathogens.
The latest introduction to the Haybuster PTO tub grinder family is the H-1030 model. It also has a 10’ tub and comes equipped with tub tilt and heavy-duty hammermill, that is located in the rear of the tub. It also has a dual-auger system to discharge material efficiently to the hydraulic folding stacking conveyor. The H-1030 requires a minimum of 150 hp up to 315 hp tractor. The newly designed electronic governor protects the tractor and machine from overloads, allowing the tub grinder to grind efficiently and consistently.

Interactive virtual farm website expands access to dairy sustainability topics
A new interactive carbon calculator tool can help dairy farmers see sustainability principles in action and improve farm management decisions related to climate change.
The carbon calculator expands on the existing virtual farm website – www.virtualfarm.psu.edu – developed by researchers in Penn State’s College of Agricultural Sciences and Penn State Extension, in partnership with several universities, including the University of Wisconsin-Madison, an industry partner, the Dairy Innovation Center, and the creative services team at WPSU.
Website users can tour two virtual farms. One is a model of a 1,500-cow facility, while the other is a smaller-scale operation of 150 animals. Users can click on a particular aspect of the farms – such as pastures, housing, manure storage facilities, feed silos, milking facilities and more – and information related to that specic area will pop up, allowing for further exploration. Sustainability topics focus on milk production, herd and nutrient management, crops and soils, and greenhouse gases.
Another enhancement involves simplied fast facts about how dairy cows are managed on modern dairy farms. Topics include the cow life cycle, crop production, feed and energy on the farm, and manure management.

It is hosted by the University of Minnesota’s Gopher Dairy Club in cooperation with the Minnesota 4-H Dairy Project Committee and Minnesota Livestock Breeders’ Association. The goal of the camp is to provide dairy youth the opportunity to strengthen their dairy knowledge and skills as well as to network with other dairy youth that share their interests. The total camp cost is $75 per camper which includes all accommodations during their time at camp.
The primary focus areas of the camp are cattle grooming and tting, show ring preparation of dairy cattle and showmanship. Campers have the opportunity to select a calf from the St. Paul dairy herd, via the Gopher Gold Auction, and prepare that calf for showing. Professional cattle tters will be on-site for demonstrations and hands-on assistance in clipping and show ring preparation. On the nal day of the camp, a showmanship contest will allow campers to showcase what they have learned. Throughout the camp, a number of social mixers are offered, including a farm tour and a night at Bunker Beach.
For further information about Gopher Dairy Camp, visit http://z.umn.edu/gdcamp.

Rural Finance Authority declares emergency due to winter weather
The Rural Finance Authority Board has declared an emergency for all 87 counties in Minnesota in response to this winter’s excessive snow and winds. This makes zero-interest Disaster Recovery Loans available for Minnesota farmers whose operations have sustained physical property damage or loss of livestock since January.
“The RFA Board’s declaration is an important step in helping Minnesota farmers affected by the extreme weather we’ve experienced this winter,” said Minnesota Agriculture Commissioner Thom Petersen. “I encourage those who have endured damages to explore these zerointerest loans, especially if you were not insured or were underinsured.”
The Disaster Recovery Loan Program offers affordable nancing to clean up, repair or replace farm structures and replace livestock that may have been destroyed due to high winds and the weight of snow, sleet and ice. The funds are available to farmers for expenses not covered by insurance.
Eligible farmers will work with their local lender to secure the loans from the RFA.
More information, including full eligibility requirements, can be found on the Disaster Recovery Loan Program website.

Shoversʼ century-old barn burns
Larry and Nancy Shover of Delhi, Iowa, suffered a barn re April 10. The re started in the nearby shop and strong winds carried embers to the hayloft of the century-old tiestall barn where the cows were housed. The Shovers had already called the re department by the time the re reached the barn and acted quickly to let all 67 of the cows out to safety. Family, friends and neighbors pitched in and loaned the Shovers equipment as they lost their tractors, skid loader, TMR mixer, grinder mixer and all their milking equipment. They were soon able to secure an empty farm site down the road to milk their cows.
Beef-on-dairy shows significant economic advantages
Genomics and sexed semen allowed Shawn Hollermann of Burtrum, Minnesota, to breed his top heifers and increase his genetic pool. Hollermann then used beef semen to breed his bottom animals and ones that did not breed back easily. Using beef-on-dairy animals was not new to the industry, but with nished cattle prices at an all-time low, it was a way to bring additional market value to those animals.
Their turn to upgrade
Char and Randy Glenna were nally able to upgrade their dairy farm facilities near Amery, Wisconsin. The upgrades allowed them to milk their 84 cows in a single-8 retrot parlor. They also built a new 68-by-176 tunnel-ventilated 105-stall freestall barn. Set back by low milk prices, the Glennas estimated to gain 10 to 15 pounds per cow with the upgraded facilities.
Technology leads the way
Bob, Mitch and Max Malm were operating the rst dairy farm in Wisconsin to install a Lely Vector, an automatic feeding system. The Malms milked 115 cows near Loyal, Wisconsin. The dairy was already home to two Lely robotic milking systems. A 50-by-50 kitchen room was added onto the robot barn and was where all feedstuffs were housed for the robot to select from. The robot used a laser to measure feed levels, push up feed and distribute a ration within the Malms’ operation.

A messy spring for Soiney Farms
On April 14, Todd Soiney’s manure pit wall had sunk slightly into the thawing ground, causing 350,000 gallons of manure to spill onto the road and nearby elds. The Soiney farm milked 412 cows near Canton, Minnesota. The manure pit, which was only 1.5 years old, held 2.3 million gallons. Neighbors and friends rounded up tractors and manure spreaders to help clean up and ended up hauling 170 loads onto Soiney’s elds.
Ice storm ravages region
A three-day snowstorm, starting on April 9, left more than a foot of snow in some areas and several inches of freezing rain in other areas of southeastern South Dakota, southwestern Minnesota and northwestern Iowa. Thousands of residents were without power for days as crews worked to dig out from the storm and restore power. On the evening of April 13, Mike Zeinstra, who milked 530 cows near Holland, Minnesota, lost a 72-foot section of his freestall barn when the roof caved in due to the heavy snowfall.

Families
benefit from business planning grants
Minnesota launched the Dairy Business Planning Grant effort in 2001 and helped producers take a long-term view of their operations. Carl, Curtney and Chad Carlson of Carlson Dairy near Pennock, Minnesota, and Mike and Brenda Wiechmann near Freeport, Minnesota, took advantage of these grants to expand their dairies. The Carlsons went from milking 100 cows to 475 and created a formal partnership between the father and two sons. The Wiechmanns were planning on adding 20 cows to their 80-cow operation and putting in a 1.4 million-gallon manure pit.
Four generations of red and white
Mike and Linda Hanson milked a herd of 50 purebred Ayrshire cows near Goodridge, Minnesota. The couple reminisced about meeting 15 years before at the 1988 Ayrshire convention in Rochester, Minnesota, and marrying a year later. While growing up, Linda and her sister, Sherry Newell, showed Ayrshire calves through 4-H, and Mike’s family had been raising Ayrshires since his grandfather’s era. Mike and Linda’s three young children were the fourth generation on their family farm.
