Farms thrive with robotic technology

Panelists discuss pros, cons at CPDE By Jennifer Coyne jenn@dairystar.com

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – As technology becomes a greater part of the dairy industry, four dairy farmers gathered to discuss their experience with robotic milking systems and provide insight on the automation for others during the robotic panel session March 30 at Central Plains Dairy Expo in Sioux Falls. “Absolutely we’d do it again,” said Jason Holschbach of installing milking robots. “Myself and everybody else on our farm are really cow people. Each of us now have been able to focus on the cows, and that’s something we enjoy very much.” Holschbach and his family operate Cloveredge Farm LLC near Manitowoc, Wisconsin. They milk 500 registered Holsteins with eight GEA DairyRobot R9500 monoboxes, a change in the milking systems they imple-

mented ve years ago. The dairy farmer was joined by three others who installed milking robots at least ve years ago too. John and Sharon Vanderwaal milk 255 cows with four Lely A4 robots on their farm, J&S Dairy, near Maurice, Iowa. In 2017, the Vanderwaals installed the robots after leaving a family partnership with John’s brother where they milked 1,200 cows in a rotary parlor. Ryan Lepeska and his family are milking 180 cows with three DeLaval V300 robots at Lepeska Dairy near Stitzer, Wisconsin. The Lepeskas rst installed robots in 2009 and made the upgrade to the company’s latest robot series three years ago. Holschbach gives credit to automation for herd success The Holschbach family reached a crossroads in their dairy business ve years ago when they needed to make improvements to their milking system, housing facili-

ties and management. With the assistance of robots, the family saw their herd health improve and could accommodate Holschbach’s return to the farm. “When we built our new facility, we split things in to two,” said Holschbach of the eight robots and new 4-row freestall barn. “Our expectations, which we’re meeting today, is to see a seven-year return on the labor alone. We’re also getting more longevity out of our cows.”

Production-wise, Cloveredge Farm runs a 90-pound tank average with 3.8% fat and 3.15% protein content. The robot’s data on each cow has allowed Holschbach to monitor herd health and catch potential problems earlier. He said the farm’s veterinary expenses are down 15% from prior years because the management team is able to catch early signs of mastitis, pneumonia and sore feet, for example. “On the mastitis, we’re

catching it a lot faster,” Holschbach said. “A lot of times, we’re catching it at least one day faster and often times with signs that would almost be missed in a parlor.” The reports also guide Holschbach for proper maintenance on the equipment. “It’s a shift in mindset, really,” said Holschbach of milking with robots instead Turn to ROBOTS | Page 4

It takes a little more tech savvy person, and you have to be diligent.” The Holschbachs have spent the past ve years beneting from automated milking technology in the form of herd health and performance and also in the team’s ability to manage the farm better. As they consider the future, there is no question robots will be a part of it. “We’ll easily get two more years out of ours,” Holschbach said. “When I look at it, I easily see us using these for 10 years. Then, it becomes a want or a need to replace and update.”

If you want the autosteer, you might have to sell your not-so-old tractor,” John said. “I don’t think we’d go back to a traditional way of milking.” Lepeskas changed course with automation When the Lepeska family looked to make upgrades on its dairy farm, they had papers signed to build a parlor; 13 years later, they have not only installed robots but upgraded them to the latest version. “Someone told us to check out robots before we went ahead with the parlor,” Lepeska said. “We did and then scrapped the idea of a parlor. Within eight months, we were in with robots.” The Lepeskas estimated a sevenyear payback on the automated units. They rst installed two robots, then as they grew their herd from within, they added a third robot. In 2019, the farm replaced the three robots with the latest series. “We had our rst ones in for about 10 years and had no intentions of trading them out. Ours had just shy of 100,000 hours,” Lepeska said. “When it came to the upgrade, the bank was on board. They knew we were getting more milk, cows were lasting longer, somatic cell count was down, breeding was better; it was all better from a cash ow perspective.” Lepeska said the rst robots were

Vanderwaals farm on own with robots John and Sharon were looking for an opportunity to dairy farm on their own, and installing four milking robots was part of that solution. “I wanted to go out on my own,” John said. “With my brother, I took care of the employees, so managing people and cows are totally different aspects. That’s why we decided to go to robots.” The Vanderwaals have spent the past ve years adjusting to an automated way of farming and the differences that come with it. The herd boasts a 95-pound tank average with a 3.8% fat and 3.05% protein content; their goal is to improve to 3.9% fat and 3.15% protein. John, who takes care of feeding, estimated that the farm’s feed cost is about $0.30 to $0.35 per head “Technology, as it advances, is more than the just like a tractor. The faithful farmer

Dairyman serves as part-time preacher By Abby Wiedmeyer abby.w@dairystar.com

SOUTH WAYNE, Wis. – When a small country church needed to ll a retiring minister’s vacancy, they looked to the community to ll the void. Koel Steinmann answered the call and began preaching at the church up the road from his dairy farm near South Wayne. It was supposed to be a temporary situation, with Steinmann and three other people lling in once a month. Seven years later, Steinmann is still preaching. “I didn’t graduate from seminary and I’m not a biblical expert. But, I do have faith,” Steinmann said. “And, I think that goes hand in hand with dairy farming. You’ve got to have faith that something better is going to happen or you’re not going to last very long at all.” Steinmann watched his parents struggle with health issues and dealt with his own medical problems as well but maintains a positive outlook on life. “I feel like farming has helped my faith and faith has helped with my farming,” Steinmann said. Steinmann took over his grandpa’s farm in 2016, one year after he began with the church. He milks 50 cows in a stanchion barn. Steinmann grew up helping his grandpa on the farm every chance he could get and attended church with his mother every Sunday. “I didn’t know I wanted to milk cows,” Steinmann said. “Even though it was always a

big part of my life, I was also interested in teaching and political science. But, then summer would come and I would be down at the farm and that was it.” As Steinmann grew older, his grandpa began to slow down. “He had never pushed this on anyone,” Steinmann said. “I knew that if I wanted to see this farm in operation, it was now or never.” Six years ago, Steinmann took over his grandpa’s farm on the day he turned 21 years old. One year after taking over the farm, Steinmann started having health issues. While in the barn milking, he had a seizure. His brother and sister were at the farm helping and found him trapped between two cows and turning blue. He regained consciousness, and they thought the initial seizure was an isolated situation. However, three more seizures occurred within the next few years. “They haven’t found a diagnosis,” Steinmann said. “But, I am on medication now and haven’t had any spells for two years or so.” Steinmann’s brother, Noah, has since graduated high school and helps Steinmann on the farm. “He’s been right by my side through the best of it and the worst of it,” Steinmann said. “He’s been around to save my life on three different occasions.” Steinmann had watched his mother struggle with health issues all his life. After surviving

She was able to walk until Steinmann was in seventh grade when muscle atrophy and arthritis prevented her from ever walking again. “To see her health progressively get worse and her faith progressively get stronger was something that I didn’t appreciate until I graduated and was out of the house,” Steinmann said. “Although she is in a wheelchair with a lot of health issues, she’s got this power, this optimism and this strength that it’s all going to be OK.” Steinmann’s barn faces the church where he preaches, and he said the lit up cross serves as a visual reminder of his faith. “No matter if it’s raining out or if the sun is shining, you can always see that cross shining,” Steinmann said. “It’s kind of poetic.” Steinmann has found the time with the cows therapeutic

when dealing with life’s difculties. “There’s a humbling aspect to it,” Steinmann said. “No matter what goes on throughout the day, the cows still have to get milked.” Steinmann found solace in the barn when he and his wife, Laken, lost a newborn child one year ago. The baby was discovered to have only one partially functioning kidney when Laken was six months pregnant, and the child only lived for an hour and a half. “Last April, we lost our son, Winston,” Steinmann said. “I remember leaving the hospital and my thoughts were all over the place. The one place I wanted to go was here to the farm. I don’t know what it is, if it’s the act of milking and it’s a safe place to feel, but there’s something about it.” Steinmann said he uses farming references in his messages in church.

“It’s just always gone hand in hand,” Steinmann said. “There’s purpose in working for something bigger than yourself.” Steinmann said he has been fortunate to have people to look up to his whole life. “I’ve had my grandpa, I’ve had my mom and dad to look up to, my brother who’s been with me the whole time, and now I have Laken,” Steinmann said. “I think if it wasn’t for my family, I couldn’t keep doing this. And, if I wasn’t doing this (farming), I don’t know if I’d be able to do what I could for my family.” Although he did not always know he would farm, and he did not know he would end up preaching, Steinmann said he feels at home on the farm and in the church. “There’s no other place that I would milk cows than this barn right here,” Steinmann said. “It’s just always been home, and I love it.”

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. − As with any business, dairy farmers should always be looking for ways to improve prots. One idea is to create efcient, effective and cost-reducing maternity management on farms. “Lean farming is a way of helping farmers make more money,” said Dagmar Beckel from Golden Calf Company. “By eliminating waste or non-value-added activities such as searching for a calf tag or warming up colostrum, farmers can reduce their costs and maximize prots.” Dagmar and her husband, Andy, led “Lean Maternity,” a producer panel with Alaina McCann, calf manager at Twin Spruce Farm, and Eric Van Wyk, herd manager at Dykstra Dairy, March 30 at the Central Plains Dairy Expo in Sioux Falls. McCann milks 3,000 cows on Twin Spruce Farm in Richmond, Minnesota, and Van Wyk milks 3,000 cows on Dykstra Dairy in Le Mars, Iowa. The two producers shared ways they have improved the calf care programs on their farms and ultimately made their respective farms leaner. A lean farm eliminates waste or not value-added activities through continuous improvement in the pursuit of perfection of animal care, said Dagmar. “This can be done through the use of visuals, either with directions on posters showing how to feed the calf or tracing where the tube feeders go on the wall after they are washed,” she said. Andy agreed. “You want to have a system that keeps it visual so you can easily see where a tool is and determine when it needs to be replaced,” he said. Andy also said to be mindful of the amount of people and employees on farms. If warranted, consider processes that reduce the number of people involved. “Lean is a way of getting rid of wasteful actions either in the maternity or somewhere else,” he said. Dagmar said there are different types of waste such as waiting time. “What are the employees waiting on and what are the calves waiting on?” she said. “It should take about 30 minutes from when a calf is born to when it receives its rst colostrum. Due to all these different activities such as milking the cow, warming up the colostrum or searching for a tag, it could take up to 130 minutes.” Andy agreed. “The calf does not really care if you have to warm up the colostrum or clean the tube feeder; it just wants to get the delivery of the colostrum,” he said. Another form of waste is overprocessing. “One example would be throwing a frozen bottle of water into a bucket of colostrum to chill it as quickly as possible,” Andy said. “It’s really wasteful because isn’t there a better and more hygienic way to do this?” At Twin Spruce Farm, McCann feeds pasteurized colostrum to young calves. The farm is capable of pasteurizing 12 cartridges of colostrum at a time. Previously, the farm was only able to pasteurize four colostrum bags at one time,

McCann said. “If we had more than four calves, we’d have colostrum sitting on the oor or sitting on the shelf waiting to be pasteurized,” she said. “In that time, we’d have another cow calve and we’d have to warm up that colostrum. We didn’t have any space in the colostrum pasteurizer, so we’d have to warm it up in hot water.” They also moved to using disposable tubes. “We sometimes have Jerseys on our farm, so we were using a plastic tuber because the stainless-steel tuber was too big,” McCann said. “It just wasn’t healthy for the calf. We’d use it multiple times, and we’d wash it. But, it wasn’t really sanitized. So, we got rid of that because we could never get the cleaning tube up the pipe.” McCann said both of those changes have resulted in healthier calves. “The disposable tubes are not as likely to damage the throat on the little calves,” she said. “It helps tremendously and it makes it easier on the new employees.” Van Wyk also started using disposable tubes. “You never have to worry about the calves scouring and wondering if the tuber is clean,” he said. “We used to get the ATP meter out and swab the tuber. If it was not very clean, we’d throw the tuber out and get a new tuber. Now, it’s just a single use thing, and our (ATP) scores went down.” Van Wyk pasteurizes 12 cartridges of colostrum at a time and added a thawing unit to make feeding colostrum more efcient. “Our pasteurizer took a lot of water and electricity just to heat the water for one bag,” he said. “We added the second smaller unit to thaw with, and that’s made our process more efcient in the maternity pen because we are able to use less water and electricity since it’s only made to thaw out two bags of colostrum.” In the process of improving calf care, McCann and Van Wyk also eliminated waste. “Van Wyk got rid of utilizing the ATP meter, and along the way, he also stopped wasting valuable time and losing money on the equipment,” Andy said. “They also eliminated other wastes such as water and brushes which were used for cleaning the equipment.” Dagmar said standardization is also a way of improving a dairy. “If you tell someone to clean their room or draw a pig, they’re going to do it however they want,” she said. “Whereas, if you have parameters or standardizations, things will get done the same.” The panelists discussed ways they standardize practices on their dairy. “We have the day shift employees train the night shift employees until they are ready to go to their shift,” McCann said. “We also have posters in both English and Spanish.” Van Wyk’s farm also has training protocols in place to prepare their employees for situations in the maternity area. “We have new employees watch training videos, such as how to pull a calf, and have cameras in all the barns so we can see what is going on,” he said. By getting rid of wasteful actions, making visuals and standardizing, dairy farming becomes easier and more cost efcient. “You have to be thinking of how you can be more lean on your dairy,” Andy said.

Get to know Clara Pueger of Holdingford, Minnesota

Clara Pueger Parents: Brian and Jessica Donabauer Holdingford, Minnesota Stearns County 250 cows Holdingford High School 18 years old Employer Lisa Groetsch: Tell us your favorite experience of working with Clara. We have known Clara her entire life. Her and her parents have helped with covering the bunkers for years before she started working in the robot barn. I had a conversation with her recently that made me smile. She said working with Natausha, our herd manager, made her change her emphasis in her college major from livestock to dairy. She isn’t afraid of work, and it’s fun to know that it’s more than just a part-time job. What qualities does Clara have that benet the farm? Clara is timely and very efcient with her time here, well unless there is food in the ofce. Clara Pueger: What are your responsibilities on the farm? I take care of fetching cows, scraping manure, cleaning robot rooms, washing waterers and helping watch for signs of sick cows.

MARK KLAPHAKE/DAIRY STAR

Clara Pueger scrapes the stalls at Groetsch Dairy April 14 near Albany, Minnesota. Pueger has been helping on the dairy for over two years. When did you begin helping on the farm? I started in the robot barn Jan. 12, 2020. When I was younger, my family and I used to help throw tires on the silage pile every fall. How has working on the farm shaped your character? Working here really helped improve my work ethic and people skills. This is very much a stay-untilthe-work-is-done kind of job, and it is also easier to do that when working with someone.
