A man with a lasting impact Tande passes away at 83, leaves behind a legacy in dairy By Kate Rechtzigel kate.r@dairystar.com
OWATONNA, Minn. − On the morning of March 26, the dairy community lost 83-year-old Larry Tande to multiple myeloma. “He was quiet and soft spoken, but when he spoke, he spoke with immense depth,” Lori Read said of Tande. Read and her family milk 125 registered Brown Swiss cows near Austin. Read also nominated Tande for the Minnesota Purebred Dairy Cattle Association’s Distinguished Service Award which he received during the All-Breeds Convention March 11-12 in Willmar. Tande held many roles within the industry and also had 50 registered Holstein cows which were housed on Jerry Rypka’s farm near Owatonna. He was married for over 60 years to his wife, Carolyn. Their daughter, Tara, lives on the East Coast and works in the travel industry and their son, Thane, owns and operates a marina in Prior Lake. Over the years, Tande won numerous awards from being the top 4-H dairy project, representing the state at the 4-H club congress in Chicago, being inducted into the Steele County Livestock Hall of Fame, being inducted into the Minnesota Livestock Breeder’s Hall of Fame, a recipient of the Gopher Dairy Club’s Golden Graduate Award in 2010 and a number of other awards. “He was a Holstein breeder, but he was aware of Brown Swiss and other col-
Larry Tande ored breeds,” Read said. “He knew all of them and respected them for what they were.” Tande was also an assistant county agent for Steele County in charge of the 4-H program; was a director of animal science programs for Minnesota 4-H; a regional director for extension; judged at local fairs, state fairs, World Dairy Expo and in foreign countries; was a state fair dairy cattle superintendent; was on the Minnesota Holstein Association Board of Directors; chaired the National Holstein Convention in 1989; and was president of the National Holstein Association. “He always helped to gure out what made people tick whether that was sheep or dairy,” Brad Rugg said. “It didn’t matter what it was as long as there was a something.” Rugg rst met Tande as a teenager when he was showing dairy with Mower County 4-H and later went on to work as
his 4-H summer assistant for Steele County in 1973. Rugg became the director of animal science programs for Minnesota 4-H shortly after Tande retired in 2001. “He was a mentor for me,” Rugg said. “He did things the way I wanted to do things. It’s not easy to manage major events or handle the rules and regulations involved in 4-H. Nobody did it better.” While he established himself in the industry, Tande kept his roots in the barn with his herd of registered cattle. “In 1999, I was milking on my own on John Bierbaum’s farm near Mantorville and (Tande) popped in the barn and asked if I wanted to be his herdsman,” Tracy Schaefer said. “I thought it was a great opportunity to work with a well-known person and some great cows, so I took it.” Schaefer handled the day-to-day management of the farm for three years until Tande retired from extension in 2001. “He helped to instill my passion for registered Holsteins and the Holstein association,” Schaefer said. “Without him, I wouldn’t be involved as much as I am today.” Schaefer now owns 30 cows which are housed on a farm in Ellsworth and started a new job as a classier for Holstein USA April 5. Joe and Ev Stransky are dairy farmers from Owatonna and lifelong friends of Tande. “The rst time I met Tande, he came out to look at my 4-H animals in the spring of 1962,” Joe Stransky said. “He somehow remembered I had bought my rst registered animal in spring of 1961, so when he got there, he asked where she was. We went out to the pasture and found her, and he took one look at her and said, ‘You get a halter on this heifer and I want to see her at the fair.’ She was my 4-H state fair trip for the next four years.” Another lifelong friend was John Bier-
baum who worked with Tande when planning the National Holstein Convention, as president of the Minnesota Holstein Association and on the National Holstein Association board. Bierbaum described Tande as a professional who was well organized and enthusiastic about the Holstein breed. “He had a dry sense of humor, and the more you got to know him, the more you appreciated it,” he said. Bierbaum’s favorite memory with Tande was being on the cover of the Minnesota Holstein Association’s news publication together. “We were leading our two favorite show cows at the state show in Hutchinson,” he said. Tande was most notable for his work with youth, especially those in dairy. “He liked working with young people and educating them,” Bierbaum said. Read agreed. “My son, Greg, was in the showmanship ring at the Mower County Fair, and he got second place all because he moved his cow’s feet with his feet. To this day, he still doesn’t use his feet and he’s 30 years old,” she said. “Tande was trying to teach him.” Read also said Tande had a great memory. “He always remembered and asked about you and your kids, it didn’t matter who you were,” she said. Tande left a lasting impact on the Holstein breed, young people, adults and the dairy industry as a whole. “He taught me what it means to be a leader as an adult, and I have yet to gure out whether he was a father or brother gure,” Rugg said. Bierbaum agreed. “He will be remembered for his connections and friendships in the industry,” he said. “A lot of people enjoyed and relied on him.”

The three Cs: Cash, culture, community Panelists share ways to recruit, retain employees By Kate Rechtzigel kate.r@dairystar.com
SOUIX FALLS, S.D. − There are many risks in the dairy industry, but one risk is a repeated concern among farmers. “We do not have enough people on the farm or enough people coming into this industry,” said Allen Schlenker from MarshMcLennan Agency. Schlenker introduced the panel, “Recruiting and retention: Cash, culture or community,” during the Central Plains Dairy Expo March 30 in Sioux Falls. On the panel was co-worker Christy Westerman, South Dakota State University Extension specialist Maristela Rovai and dairy farmers Christina Zuiderveen, David Elliot and Tom Walsh. “It’s important for us to retain employees because of the capital, time and money we put into recruiting and training the employees,” Zuiderveen said. “If you are constantly having turnover, you are spending more of your time training, and they are not getting to know the other employees.” Zuiderveen and her family live in Iowa and own multiple dairies across the Upper Midwest, including Black Soil Dairy LLC in Granville, Iowa, Mt. Hope Dairy in Beresford and Dakota Plains Dairy in Centerville. Elliot, operations manager for Drumgoon Dairy in Lake Norden, agreed with Zuiderveen’s thoughts on recruiting employees. “We feel it is important to keep an employee even if they have an accident or make a mistake,” he said. “You have to value your employees and have more of a personal relationship with them.” Elliot’s farm has to compete against other dairies and industries in the area, he said. For Walsh, who is the operations manager for Riverview Dairy LLP in Morris, Minnesota, he looks to hire individuals to create a culture. “We have a culture for passionate people and innovative ideas from milking the cows all the way up,” Walsh said. Together, the three dairy farmers shared what it takes to recruit and retain employees. “We bring some of our employees to the Central Plains Dairy Expo and offer other training for them,” Walsh said. “We make them feel that they are important to the business and the job they are doing is important.” Elliot agreed. “We try to keep employees aware and make them a part of the support process,” he said. “The employees appreciate showing up, doing what is expected and doing the same thing the next day. We have an open access, 24/7 support policy, and I think that has allowed us to have a more personal relationship with our employees.” For Zuiderveen and her farm, the crew focuses on a theme of respect in day-to-day life.
“We wear yellow shirts, and they have four squares,” she said. … “We have ‘Respect’ written in both English and Spanish in one square. We have a cow in another because we have to respect the cow both for her strength and for taking care of her. We have a person in a third square because we have to respect people; no matter if you are English-speaking, Spanish-speaking or a manager. And, we have equipment in a fourth square because we have to respect and acknowledge the dangers of the equipment.” Aside from the dairy farmers’ perspectives, Westerman spoke on health insurance for employees. “Every producer right now is looking for talent,” Westerman said. “We take an hour to sit down and explain health insurance to employees to keep them safe and healthy at work and at home. We try to be that person who helps them understand and connect them to the local clinic or caregiver when they need it.” Walsh, Elliot and Zuiderveen also said they offer English classes, have 401(K) retirement benets, help provide housing for employees and have routine safety drills. “Nothing is worth your life,” Elliot said. Rovai, a native of Brazil, provided a perspective from the employee’s point of view. “We are coming to bring money back to our families in our places of origin, and it’s important for us to have a place where we interact with other employees, managers and the owners,” she said. “Clear communication is really important. For us Latinos, it’s really important for us to understand the why. When we understand that, we will do our job and do it much better because we understand what we’ve done.” Other differences Rovai talked about were language and education. “Our bosses are our counselors,” she said. “We have to keep in mind that most of these employees have lower than a ninth grade education. Latinos are fast learners, so we need to bring the right tools to them and not complicate things.” Zuiderveen said some of the things she does to get to know her employees is take her kids on walks in the barn, teach her kids Spanish and spend time in the ofce. “It’s amazing in that half hour how many employees will come in, say hi and tell me about their kids or something that’s going on,” she said. “I really nd a lot of value in that, and I think it means a lot to them that we are forming this relationship.” Elliot agreed. “In the summer, we play soccer on the dairy, and when we cover the silage pile together, we get to experience their culture and get to know them on a personal level,” he said. “I think a lot of our employees now see South Dakota as their home or their home away from home.” Understanding their employees’ culture, creating a community and providing an income on the farm is important for the farmers on the panel. “Think about the things we appreciate in our lives,” Walsh said. “At base level, we are all the same. We all want to provide a life for us and our families, and that’s what our coworkers want too.”

WHICH BARN IS BEST FOR YOUR HERD?
Birds just love this barn. The webs in these trusses are easy nest areas for birds. They also restrict air flow which leads to poor ventilation and moisture buildup in the building.
Starwood Rafters Uses Pole Sheds • Free Stalls Riding Arenas Pavilion Shelters Machinery Storage
The arched rafters create a more open barn allowing better ventilation. Also since there are no open webs in the trusses, there are no places for birds to nest.
• Spans up to 72 ft. • Up to 12’ spacing depending on the load you desire • Bird nesting control • Better ventilation & visability • No feed alley post obstruction • Additional ceiling height

How has working on the farm shaped your character? It has taught me what it’s like to struggle. Sometimes you have to do things you don’t want to, but it has taught me to work hard and be grateful for what we have.
What do you love most about farm life? We get to spend time with family, be a part of an important industry and be around cows.

MARK KLAPHAKE/DAIRY STAR
Becky and Lyle Schefers and their four children – (from leŌ) Veronica, Ben, Elizabeth and Cory – milk 400 cows near Rice, Minnesota.
When do you do chores, and what chores do you do? Around here, it all depends on what employees we have. I sometimes help milk every morning and night. Sometimes just mornings. Right now, I work on Mondays and Thursdays, and on weekends, I wake up at 4:30 a.m. I usually just milk cows. I also feed our red barn which is full of chickens, rabbits, goats, cats and our Shetland pony, Bear. I feed and pick eggs every three days, because me and my siblings take turns. What are your favorite and least favorite chores? My favorite is probably feeding calves because it is fun. The babies are so adorable and fun. My least favorite chore is probably cleaning up after foot baths, because there is a lot of manure. My arms always get tired of scraping. Do you have a favorite animal on your farm? All the animals are my favorite. It would be so hard to choose one. Every animal acts differently than the other. They all have their own personalities. What is your favorite subject in school? I don’t really have a favorite subject, but I think math would be at the bottom of my Turn to SCHEFERS| Page 11
