Promoting the youth dairy project White Oaks Cattle Co. caters to kids who want to show By Stacey Smart
stacey.s@dairystar.com
HARVARD, Ill. – Growing the 4-H dairy project in his county is the vision behind Aaron Spiniolas’ newest business venture – White Oaks Cattle Co. Spiniolas is looking to develop show-winning animals while nurturing a love for dairy in area youth. “I’d like to grow the dairy animal population at the McHenry County Fair,” Spiniolas said. “Numbers have been down, and we’re trying to promote this part of 4-H. We would like to support it as much as we can locally not only for our own benet but so that 4-H stays alive and hopefully prospers.” Spiniolas also owns a trucking and commodity sales company that sells gluten feed and distillers to dairy farms and feed lots. White Oaks Cattle Co. is a full-service boarding facility started by Spiniolas in 2020. During show season, every animal six months and older is washed daily. Spiniolas transports cattle to any show a client wishes to attend and lets them tie in with the White Oaks string. He also offers tting services and supplies everything needed at the show. White Oaks does some of their own tting but will hire out this service for national shows.
STACEY SMART/DAIRY STAR
The Spiniolas family – Aaron and his wife, Natalie holding Lyla, and Ella and Cash – runs White Oaks CaƩle Co. in Harvard, Illinois. The mission of White Oaks is to develop show-winning animals and revive the 4-H dairy project in McHenry County and beyond. “A kid could just grab the halter and go in the show ring if they wanted, but we would like them to be more involved,” Spiniolas said. “We encourage kids to care for their animal while at the show and help get her ready. They are also invited to come to our farm as often as they like to wash, lead, etc.”
Many of his potential prospects are farm kids or kids who have a farm background but might not have the facilities to raise a show animal. However, a farm background is not required. Spiniolas said they will help children learn how to show and care for their animal. Spiniolas is boarding a couple ani-
mals for friends and owns many of his cattle in partnership. He is breeding with the goal of marketing young heifers and yearlings to younger kids who want a smaller calf to start with. The idea is for the youth to purchase the animal and house it at Spiniolas’ farm. “If you’re going to be competitive in this game, your animals need more one-on-one attention, which is what we offer here,” Spiniolas said. Spiniolas’ herd is mostly Holstein and Red and White Holstein, but he also has one Jersey and one Brown Swiss. “Red and White Holsteins are my passion,” Spiniolas said. “That’s what I showed growing up.” Spiniolas’ registered cow addiction began in his youth. Growing up on a dairy farm in Harvard, he milked in a 108-stall tiestall barn where about onethird of the herd was registered. “My older brother and I were all about that registered cattle lifestyle,” Spiniolas said. “It kept us motivated to get up every morning.” When Spiniolas’ trucking business outgrew his previous location, Spiniolas went looking for a new place to live. He stumbled upon a farm that was perfect for his young family and also an ideal home to breed and raise show cattle. Spiniolas and his wife, Natalie, an interior designer, have three children – Ella, 6, Cash, 3, and Lyla, 3 months. “My kids are part of the reason I wanted to start this,” Spiniolas said. “I wanted them to experience growing up on a farm to some extent. I’ve always had a passion for showing and breedTurn to WHITE OAKS | Page 4

ing registered cattle, and I wanted to give my kids that opportunity as well. I also wanted to offer that opportunity to other kids needing a place to house animals while getting more kids involved in the dairy project.” Growing up, Spiniolas was involved in his local 4-H and Junior Holstein clubs and showed cattle at the local level. Last year was his rst full year hitting national level shows, including World Dairy Expo. “It was a pretty cool experience to show at Madison,” Spiniolas said. “I’ve been there a bunch of times but had never shown before. We took six head, and they all held their own with our best nishing eighth.” Spiniolas showed at 10 shows in 2021, including several county fairs – McHenry, Boone and Walworth. “It was a big learning curve guring out which shows to do,” he said. “Before showing cows, I used to show semi-trucks all over the U.S. and even won a national championship. Now I judge truck shows instead.” Throughout the years after graduating from high school and starting his trucking business, Spiniolas bought a few animals in partnership and housed them at other locations. “It didn’t feel the same to me as doing it yourself,” he said. “I still have cattle boarded in Canada, but they will be coming home after (WDE).” In the past year, Spiniolas bought heifers to obtain breeding stock and would now like to focus on buying embryos. When shopping for heifers, Spiniolas looked for high type and those with a big, deep rib. He has many Red and Whites that go back to the famous Apple cow family. “I tried to nd heifers out of wellknown cattle that already proved themselves,” he said. Spiniolas is using bulls like Warrior, King Doc and Analyst, and about eight heifers are due this summer that were bred with sexed semen. “We’ll have some good show-aged calves available this fall,” he said. “Then, hopefully it will all start to come together.” The rst calves with a White Oaks prex were born in March – Hiccup and Autumn – and the Red and White Holsteins will be project calves for Spiniolas’ son and daughter.
“That was the highlight of my kids’ spring break,” Spiniolas said. “They were super excited. I didn’t use sexed semen but still got two heifers.” Jeff Battles is Spiniolas’ hired hand who cares for the cattle on a day-to-day basis when Spiniolas is attending to his other business. Battles also helps with mechanics for Spiniolas’ trucking company. Spiniolas currently buys his grain, but he grows most of his hay on 40 acres. After working up the hay ground this year, he plans to plant oat and is trying to get to a point where he can grow all the feed he needs. “The feed program is the ticket to developing that nice, wide rib and slender, at-boned animal we’re looking for,” Spiniolas said. “We feed a highprotein pellet and really dry, long-stem grass hay which helps develop a deep rib. Cattle develop their rib structure at a young age, so the sooner we can get them eating dry hay, the better.” Spiniolas milks with a portable pump but is in the process of pricing out a full pipeline as he continues to recreate his barn. The previous owner of the farm raised registered Red Angus, and Spiniolas believes the last time cows were milked here was the 1950s. He added 10 stalls last fall for milk cows but never plans to milk a large herd. He also hopes to add a permanent box stall in the future. “I would rather focus on young, registered cattle and raising fewer animals so we can provide better care,” Spiniolas said. “Every animal here is for sale. The game plan is to freshen each animal in and ush her for one or two years, get her classied and then market her.” Spiniolas transformed an indoor and outdoor area adjacent to the barn into heifer housing late last fall, building pens and installing automatic waterers. “If boarding starts to take off, I may look at building a southern exposure barn,” Spiniolas said. “This is a work in progress.” Filling the barn at his county fair is a top priority for Spiniolas. White Oaks Cattle Co. is in its infancy, but Spiniolas is excited about its future and the impact he hopes the business will have on reviving the 4-H dairy project in McHenry County and beyond.

Mary Lewandowski is the author of a children’s book about her experiences growing up on a Wisconsin dairy farm as part of her FFA supervised agriculture experience. Lewandowski and her family dairy farm near Bevent, Wisconsin.
Every Dairy deserves Better.
Lewandowski pens children’s ag book By Danielle Nauman danielle.n@dairystar.com
BEVENT, Wis. – A local high school student has written a book about life on her family’s dairy farm, and she is sharing the book in area schools. Not only is Mary Lewandowski the author of “The Life of a Wisconsin Dairy Farm Girl,” when she shares the book with kids, she works to bring the farm experience to life. “I wanted to do something that would allow me to educate elementary school children about agriculture,” Lewandowski said. “I wanted to share my own story of growing up on a Wisconsin dairy farm in a way they could relate.” The book is geared toward elementary school students from kindergarten through fourth grade. Lewandowski has partnered with elementary schools in her area to visit classrooms to share her
book and teach students about how their food is produced. To date, Lewandowski has shared her story with more than 500 students in seven area elementary schools and has plans to visit more classrooms throughout the remainder of the school year. When Lewandowski visits a classroom, she engages the students for a 30-minute presentation. She shares her book and leads the students in some sort of age-appropriate activity. She brings in samples of feed to share with the students and ends her presentations giving each student a bag of donated agriculture-related items. “I start out asking the students questions to nd out what they know,” Lewandowski said. “I ask if any live on farms or have family members that might farm. I’ve found out that about 17% of the students live on farms themselves and about 48% have experienced a relative’s farm.” When sharing about her experience growing up on her family’s 50-cow dairy, Lewandowski chronicles the life Turn to LEWANDOWSKI | Page 7

Mary Lewandowski shares her book with young elementary-aged school children. To date, Lewandowski has shared her story with over 500 students. of a cow and shares how she works with her parents to care for their herd. For several years, Lewandowski has also managed a 40-bird ock of chickens, marketing eggs in her community. Lewandowski, the daughter of Bill and Sandy Lewandowski of Bevent, is a senior at WittenbergBirnamwood High School. Throughout her high school career, Lewandowski has been an active member of the school’s FFA chapter, honing her skills as a leader and developing a voice to educate the public of the story of how America’s farmers feed the world. For her FFA supervised agricultural experience, Lewandowski decided to branch out for her senior year, moving beyond the dairy and poultry SAEs she has participated in previously. The book served as her SAE project, and she worked with the guidance of FFA advisor Matt Christian. After reaching out to area schools and community members, Lewandowski said she learned that there was a need to promote Wisconsin agriculture, particularly at the youngest levels. Lewandowski credits her involvement in FFA for helping her develop the leadership skills and condence to share her personal story about agriculture. In FFA, she has held the ofces of sentinel as a sophomore and has served as vice president of public relations throughout both her junior and senior years; she also serves as the liaison between the chapter and its alumni association. She has been a member of both the state and national FFA bands as a trumpet player and will receive her State FFA Degree at the organization’s upcoming convention in June. Not only has Lewandowski grown through her presentations, she said the entire process of planning, writing and publishing the book has been a valuable learning experience from day one. “My communication skills have really developed throughout this project,” Lewandowski said. “It hasn’t always been easy, but I have had to do a lot of cold calling, working to procure sponsorships and donations to help fund the process. I have become a better business communicator throughout this project.” Lewandowski expressed her gratitude to both the Wittenberg-Birnamwood FFA Alumni and the Shawano County Farm Bureau for both their nancial assistance to the project as well as the valuable mentorship and support resources each provided throughout the process. Lewandowski said the rst printing of the book included 200 copies and 50 more copies were printed. Lewandowski worked with the copy departments at the local Staples and Ofce Max stores. For her efforts in her SAE project, Lewandowski received a silver award from her prociency application. Working with youth to raise awareness of the importance of agriculture has cemented Lewandowski’s plans for the future, which include working as a dairy advocate and program manager for a dairy organization. She plans to continue her education, rst studying agri-business and dairy science at North Central Wisconsin Technical College before transferring to the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point to nish a degree in organizational leadership. Lewandowski said that within the next 10 years, she would like to be able to take over the operation of her family’s dairy farm. “The feedback I have received from the students has been so wonderful,” Lewandowski said. “I have been able to make a difference to the students I have connected with. We all need to try and make those connections and share the stories of our farms with the consumers.”

Get to know Tanna Luchterhand of Neillsville, Wisconsin
Tanna Luchterhand Adam and Kristina Luchterhand Elm-Roc Dairy Neillsville, Wisconsin Clark County 50 cows Junior at Loyal High School
ing calves and occasionally milking. I also help my dad treat and vaccinate cattle and help him with lots of other things too.
Questions for Adam and Kristina Luchterhand: Tell us your favorite experience of your daughter helping with chores. Our favorite experience has been watching Tanna assist a cow with having her calf. She is not afraid of getting dirty, and she knows if the calf is in distress and needs to be pulled. She will take care of both the cow and calf with condence. What qualities does your daughter have that benet the farm? Tanna has the natural ability to work with cows. She can identify a sick cow or calf and notice when a cow is coming in heat or about to calve. That is not something that can be taught in school. You need to be born with it and develop it with practice. Questions for Tanna Luchterhand: What are your responsibilities on the farm? My main responsibilities include feeding and bedding cows, feed-
When did you begin helping on the farm? I began helping on the farm when I was about 5-years-old, because I liked to follow my dad around the farm. I have always had a strong love for cows. When I was little, all I wanted to do was stay home and farm with Dad, and I have been doing that ever since every chance I get. How do you balance school, extracurricular activities and farm chores? All of the extracurriculars I am involved in involve farming and cattle. I am active in the Loyal FFA Chapter, the Wisconsin Junior Holstein Association and the Wisconsin Junior Milking Shorthorn Association and am currently serving as the state queen. I have been a 4-H member since I was very young. My main focus is the cattle, so being active in these associations and clubs allow me to do that. How has working on the farm shaped your character? Working on the farm has shaped by character by allowing me to gain the skills and knowledge of how to talk to, and do business with, adults and companies.
DANIELLE NAUMAN/DAIRY STAR
The Luchterhand family – (from leŌ) Tanna, Adam and KrisƟna – milks 50 cows on their Elm-Roc Dairy farm in Neillsville, Wisconsin. What do you love most about farm life? My favorite thing about living on a farm is that no day is the same. Every day there is always something different, whether that is working with a cow, doing something in the elds or xing something. I also love watching my show cattle grow up and have offspring for me to show in the future. What is one thing you have learned from working alongside your parents? The most important thing I have learned from working with my parents is how to handle a business. To me that is very important, because you cannot
operate a farm without knowing how to run a business or work with business people. Another important thing that I have learned is how to maintain and keep a herd of cows healthy. What are your future plans? I plan to go to Northcentral Technical College for dairy science and then come back to the family farm. I would like to build a robot barn with two robots and milk about 120 registered Holsteins and Milking Shorthorns with a couple of Guernseys. I would turn the old tiestall barn into a barn for my show cows and heifers so I can work with them.
