Wiegels build new robotic freestall to allow for upgrade By Danielle Nauman danielle.n@dairystar.com
SOUTH WAYNE, Wis. – While robots are the newest technology in the dairy world for milking cow, they are not new to the Wiegels, who retrotted four robotic milking units into their barn in 2008. “That barn was getting old, and there were getting to be a lot of issues in there,” Jack Wiegel said. “We just decided it was time for an update.” The Wiegels – Jack and Larry, along with Jack’s sons, Jason and Brian – updated by building a new freestall barn and upgrading their robots. They installed ve of the A5
version of their Lely Astronaut robots Feb. 17 on their 280cow dairy, Riverside Dairy, near South Wayne. The barn has the ability to have a sixth robot added to allow for additional cows. Along with Argall Dairy Systems, the Wiegels are hosting an open house to showcase their new facility and robotic milking system from 1 to 5 p.m. June 11. On display will be the barn with four rows of free stalls, allowing the Wiegels to have two outside aisles away from the stalls for feeding. “This design makes the barn wider, but we went this direction because it gave us the

ability to have one centrally located robot room,” Jack said. “We had two robot rooms in the old barn, and we always thought that having one room would be preferable.” The Wiegels cite ease and infrastructure savings as the biggest benets they have seen to having the single robot room. The barn is designed to be identical from one side to the
other, allowing the Wiegels to have their cows in two groups. There is a 16-stall area for special needs and fresh cows near the robot room on each side. Part of the side of the barn that has only two robots is being used as a pack area for prefresh cows. When the Wiegels decide to add their sixth robot, that area will be turned into Turn to WIEGELS | Page 4

“I love using the 1-1/4” fiberglass rods for putting up electric fences. Using the swivel connectors for bracing corners is fast, super easy, economical, and doesn’t require expensive machinery to make it this easy! Makes for a nice looking and solid fence!” Jordan Meyer, Caledonia, MN Electric Fence Post

free stalls. The robot used for the special needs area is also able to milk cows from the main group using separation gates. “The way this is set up, it makes training heifers so much easier too,” Jack said. “They are right here close to the robots.” Those gates also serve as a useful tool in sorting cows for herd health checks. The Wiegels are able to program which cows they would like sorted. “Having the cows sorted from the robot using the sort gates is a huge timesaver,” Jack said. “You don’t have to go searching for certain cows throughout the free stalls. Then when we are ready for a cow to leave the special needs area, we just need to program into the computer for the gate to send her back out into the main group.” Transitioning the cows to the new barn and robots went much easier and smoother than their rst transition 13 years ago. “They really took to the new barn and the new set-up for the robots really quickly,” Larry said. “It took the cows maybe two days to get used to the new facility and system.” At the time of the transition, the Upper Midwest was in the throes of a multi-week deep-freeze, but Jack credited the design of the barn for allowing it to warm up quickly and stay above freezing once the cows were settled. “We are really able to keep the climate controlled,” Jack said. “We can keep it cool in the hot months and above freezing in the cold months.” The Wiegels wanted the new barn to be tunnel ventilated and insulated with the lowest roof possible. When designing their ventilation system, the Wiegels procured variablespeed fans custom-made by Rite Hite Company. “My nephew is an engineer at Rite
Hite, and he designed those fans for us and had them built,” Jack said. “We have four ceiling fans that he designed in the old barn too.” A manure separator allows the Wiegels to collect and dry the manure solids for use as bedding. Each alley has a scraper equipped with a tube in the center to funnel liquid away and into the underground pit where the manure pumps liquids both up and around. “In the old barn, we had a manure separator with a ush system,” Jack said. “But we like this so much better. Before, the cows’ feet were always so dirty and wet, and they tracked manure into the stalls. Now, the alleys stay so clean and dry, and the cows are cleaner too.” They are now using the old barn as a heifer and dry cow facility. When the Wiegels rst made the decision to install robotic milkers, Jack and Larry were milking about 125 cows in a parallel parlor. They considered expanding but neither wanted to grow to the point of needing to employ outside labor. Retrotting their existing facility to house four robotic milking units and expand their herd to 240 cows made the most sense to the brothers. “No person can be as reliable or as consistent in milking the cows as the robots can be,” Larry said. “Jack and I were at the point we didn’t want to be doing the milking, but we also didn’t want to hire anyone to milk either.” Regardless of what version of robots the Wiegels have used, they have realized since 2008 robots have been the right t. And the new facility enhances the herd even more. “The cows are so calm, not being moved around chased to the parlor twice a day,” Larry said. “They do what they want to do, when they want to do it. The barn is just so relaxed and quiet.”

Mile-long memorial Fleck creates tribute for veterans with ags By Evan Michealson Contributing Writer
RICE, Minn. – For years, a lone American ag hung above the mailbox of the Fleck farm in Rice, owned by Fred and Joan Fleck. Fred Fleck, who succeeded three generations of United States military service, wanted to emphasize the appreciation and respect he had for the men and women who have served their country. So, he grabbed a couple of ags and got to work. And now, displayed along-
side County Road 22 are 19 American ags, stretching telephone pole to telephone pole for an entire mile, a wondrous homage toward veterans. “It is for the veterans, not just about being patriotic,” Fleck said. “It’s for the veterans, to honor the veterans and thank the veterans for their service.” This distinctive form of recognition began a year ago in preparation for Memorial Day. Fleck already owned several ags and decided one was not enough to convey the honor he was going for. He started with four ags, placing each on a pole, and in the following months, as he and his wife ordered more, the red, white and blue grew more prominent

along the roadside. Fleck’s father was a Korean War veteran, his grandfather was stationed at Camp Cody in New Mexico during World War I, and his greatgrandfather fought in the Civil War. Veterans hold a great deal of importance to Fleck. “They’re the ones that made this country what it

is, otherwise it wouldn’t be what it is today,” he said. “We wouldn’t be where we are.” It was not easy to complete the memorial. Fleck’s wife could only order four ags with the poles attached at a time, so Fleck placed ags in bunches. When the ags reached the end of the road, Fleck decided he wanted the nal ag in the
sequence to hold a special signicance. When Vietnam War veteran Jim Brown visited the Flecks’ Sept. 12, 2020, Fleck asked him if he would want to place the ag, to which Brown accepted. Now, with the process complete, the 19 ags remain Turn to FLECKS | Page 6

raised for passersby to view, a way to understand Fleck’s maintained respect for those who have served. He has received positive feedback as a result of the deed, with some people stopping to see the intriguing pattern. “It’s pretty nice, seeing all the ags,” Fleck said. “People do come out and it’s nice to see all of those ags up there.” When Memorial Day
comes again, the Flecks and their four children and other relatives will make their way to Saint Joseph’s Cemetery for a special service followed by another event at the other Morrill-based cemetery, Lone Pine, alongside Legion members. Afterward, the family returns to their 320-acre, 60-cow dairy farm for lunch. These small trips, now a tradition for the Flecks, are extremely emo-

22, Fleck has more plans to honor the veterans he holds in such a high regard. For Rice area drivers looking for a way to honor fallen veterans come Memorial Day, look no further

Get to know Jacob Knigge of Omro, Wisconsin
Employer: Tell us your favorite experience of your son helping with chores. At a very young age, Jacob would be in the barn helping with whatever he was able to do. Watching him interact with the cows is my favorite part. I usually nd him sitting next to one of his pet cows giving them a little extra attention. What qualities does your son have that benet the farm? Jacob has an eye for cows, noticing if a cow is not feeling well or is feeling off. That is a very hard thing to train someone to do, and for him, it comes naturally. Youth: What are your responsibilities on the farm? My responsibilities are to help with pretty much everything. The only thing that I usually don’t help with is mixing feed in the mornings. I scrape the stalls, feed calves, push up feed, clean the calf barn, clean the milking robots, move cows into the holding pen for the milker and any other miscellaneous chores that are not daily tasks. When did you begin helping on the farm? I don’t remember exactly when I started helping on the farm, but even before I could help with chores, I would be out with my dad or grandparents on the farm while they did chores. I would help carry empty pails or ride along on the tractor. How do you balance school, extracurricular activities and farm chores? My dad doesn’t make me do farm chores on the mornings that I have school. When I am not in any extracurricular activities, I come home from school and do farm chores. But when I am in an afterschool sport, such as soccer or track and eld, I help with evening chores if they are not yet done when I get home. I make sure to use my in-class time and my study hall to ensure I don’t have too much homework when I am done with my day. How has working on the farm shaped your character? Working on my farm has made me a hard worker. Even when I get a project in school, I get it done
STACEY SMART/DAIRY STAR
Jacob Knigge, 18, stands with parent and employer, Charlie Knigge, on their 120-cow dairy, Knigge Farms, near Omro, Wisconsin. Jacob is a senior at Omro High School. right away instead of procrastinating. Then, I don’t have to worry about doing that project in my free time. What do you love most about farm life? My favorite thing about farm life is the cows. Working with animals is more fun than a job, such as being a cook, because the cows are living things that have personalities. Not a single day will be the same. While being a cook, on the other hand, can get pretty boring and repetitive. What is one thing you have learned from working alongside your parents? One thing I have learned from working alongside my parents is that communication is key. The only problems that arise are from not communicating, such as what needs to be done and when it needs to be done. I have learned to communicate better in a
workplace by working alongside my parents. What are your future plans? My future plans are to go to the University of Wisconsin-Madison for an engineer-
ing degree. I am not certain on my career path, but that is my general idea. I mainly want to do some job that requires math or science, as those are the subjects I excel in the most in school.

We did an English connections project where we worked with students from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point virtually. What do you want to be when you grow up? I really don’t know yet what I want to be or do, just that I want to do something in agriculture. If you had a farm, describe what it would look like. I would have all kinds of cows, all seven of the breeds. I would have a couple of horses, some dogs and cats and maybe some sheep. I would have a big barn. What do you like most about spring? What is your favorite animal on your farm? I like our miniature donkey, Jack. What is your favorite subject in school? I like science. I enjoy learning about all the different things. What is something you have learned in school recently? We dissected frogs and craysh. They were interesting, but the smell was terrible. What do you want to be when you grow up? Minnesota Department of Agriculture receives federal funding to bring innovative conservation practices to irrigated land The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resources Conservation Service is awarding the Minnesota Department of Agriculture and project partners $3.5 million to implement conservation measures on irrigated lands. The money is being awarded through the Regional Conservation Partnership Program and will fund a ve-year project that is focused on 20 counties across the state of Minnesota. Through the RCPP, conservation partners like the Minnesota Department of Agriculture work in collaboration with NRCS and Soil and Water Conservation Districts to help farmers, ranchers, and forest landowners throughout the nation to implement systems that conserve water and soil resources, improve the health of wildlife habitats, and increase climate resilience. The MDA project, “Implementing Innovative Irrigation Practices to Protect Groundwater Quality and Quantity,” will work directly with agricultural producers using irrigation to implement conservation practices that protect groundwater and promote expanded precision irrigation practices. The MDA has partnered with SWCDs, educational institutions like Central Lakes College and the University of Minnesota, the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe, irrigation associations, and other public and private organizations to implement the project. The 20 Soil and Water Conservation Districts in the project area are: Becker, Benton, Cass, Dakota, Douglas, Grant, Hubbard, Kandiyohi, Meeker, Mille Lacs, Morrison, Otter Tail, Pope, Sherburne, Stearns, Stevens, Swift, Todd, Wadena and Washington. The irrigation project is one of 85 locally driven, public-private partnerships receiving more than $330 million as part of the Regional Conservation Partnership Program.
FarmFirst proposes using “higher of” for Class I Mover FarmFirst Dairy Cooperative will submit a proposal to USDA to revert back to using the “higher of” the Class III or Class IV price in calculating the Class I mover in Federal Milk Marketing Orders if USDA’s Agricultural Marketing Service grants a national emergency hearing to address the Class I mover issue. “Prior to using the current formula to determine the Class I mover, the industry used the “higher of” the Class III or Class IV price with few issues since its adoption,” said Jeff Lyon, FarmFirst General Manager. “When reviewing other proposals and options, we came back to using the ‘higher of’ since it was fully vetted in a national hearing process nearly twenty years ago and has served the industry well. It is clean, simpler and straight forward.” “In our review, none of the proposals that have been suggested to date will eliminate negative Producer Price Differentials, but a quick analysis for Order No. 30 showed that overall, the “higher of” performed better than the actual PPD since the current formula started in May 2019,” said Lyon. “We believe going back to using the ‘higher of’ best addresses the large negative PPDs in 2020 due to reasons related to the COVID-19 pandemic, the large spread between Class III and Class IV prices, and lastly, the large increase in Class III prices over a short period of time which encouraged Class III handlers to signicantly depool their milk from their respective federal order,” Lyon noted. “There are several changes industry stakeholders would like to see to the federal orders, but the pressing matter at hand is addressing negative PPDs,” Lyon added. “Returning to the higher of Class III or Class IV will get us back to the original intent to create favorable milk prices for farmers.
