Pinch-hitting for the Abbotsford FFA Alumni Dairy Breakfast
Annual event to be held at Midwest Sidewalls in Clark County
By Danielle Nauman danielle.n@dairystar.com
CURTISS, Wis. – When calendar pages around Wisconsin begin ipping to the month of June, the paper becomes full of dates for the many dairy breakfast events scattered across the state. Those events are anticipated by many, including Jim Weideman.
Weideman is tied to the dairy community in his area and throughout the country through his business, Midwest Sidewalls LLC, in Curtiss.
“The Abbotsford FFA Alumni Dairy Breakfast is a tradition in our community,” Weideman said. “I remember going to it as a kid and how much I enjoyed it – and still do.”
Earlier this year, the Abbotsford breakfast hit a snag as the host farm determined they would be unable to do so this year. That is when Weideman stepped in and offered to host at his business facility.
“It’s about giving back, supporting the community that has supported me for so many years,” Weideman said. “I love that this breakfast is still connected to the local community and school as a fundraiser for the FFA alumni, and that money goes to supporting the chapter and providing scholarships for students interested in agriculture.”
Becky Ruesch, one of the organizers of the annual breakfast, echoed Weideman’s sentiments. Ruesch said the FFA alumni has a great relationship with the
high school chapter, working with former advisor John Slipek, who recently retired after 47 years of educating young agriculturalists, and new advisor Jillian Tyler, a former state FFA ofcer.
We recently had our high school’s senior banquet and were able to award scholarships to kids who have been involved in FFA and have donated their time to helping run the breakfasts over the years,” Ruesch said. “We are also able to donate money to members attending the state and national conventions, making the trips more nancially manageable.”
In previous years, Weideman said he has supported the breakfast and worked as a volunteer.
“It always amazes me what the committee does to put the event on,” Weideman said. “They do a really good job running it, and it is truly an asset to our community.”
Ruesch said that while having the breakfast at an off-farm site changes the experience for guests, her group is embracing the opportunity to bring new things to the event.
“When things didn’t work out with the original host, we were thankful to have the option of working with Midwest Sidewalls,” Ruesch said. “With the declining number of farms in the area, it sometimes is hard to nd hosts.”
Ruesch said the staples of a breakfast on the farm, such as animals and tractors, will be missing, but her committee is working to have other activities for the public, such as a petting zoo, a bouncy house and face painting.
“It’s been ve years since we had the

breakfast at an off-farm site, but Midwest Sidewalls is a unique venue because many people do not understand what their business is all about or the role it plays in today’s dairy farming community,” Ruesch said. “The venue alone can make this a very educational day for all event-goers.”
Midwest Sidewalls deals in all things related to silage piles and bunkers, common sights on the many farms that dot the landscape in central Wisconsin. The business was born from Weideman’s grandfather’s tire shop, where Weideman began cutting sidewalls at the request of a local farmer as a way to help his grandfather’s business generate additional revenue.
As demand for sidewalls grew, Weideman established Midwest Sidewalls in 2014. At the time, he had no idea what the future would hold for the business.
“I really thought at the time I would always be the guy driving around and picking up used tires,” Weideman said. “The demand was so great, I quickly learned that would not be my role.”
Over the past nine years, Weideman and his staff have focused the business on assisting dairy farmers with making the best possible silages and being efcient throughout the process.
“We want our customers to succeed, and the foundation of being successful in the dairy industry lies in having good feed,” Weideman said.
To help dairy farmers reach their own goals, in addition to sidewalls, Weideman sells plastic, tire shooters, easy-roll stands, wall unrollers, silage packers, dump carts
and bunker shavers. Weideman also consults with his customers and hosts several silage management meetings for customers each year.
Weideman moved his business into a new facility last fall and decided hosting the dairy breakfast would be a good opportunity to share his business with customers.
“Most of my customers never come here,” Weideman said of the physical location of his business. “We deliver everything to them. We understand the limitations placed on their time, so we factor delivery into our prices. The breakfast will be an opportunity to invite them here to see the shop and thank them for their business.”
As a means of saying thanks, with plastic manufacturer ViaFlex, Midwest Sidewall is sponsoring a free breakfast ticket for each of their customers.
Weideman said preparing for the breakfast might be challenging, but he and his staff are ready to take on the task.
“We’ll just be wrapping up our busiest time of the year, and it will really give us a timeline to nish up some landscaping and other projects we need to do around here,” Weideman said.
The preparation, Weideman said, will be worth the end result.
“I am really looking forward to hosting,” Weideman said. “This is a great event that really brings out the people in our community and shows the best of our community spirit.”
This year’s breakfast will take place from 7 a.m. to noon June 4 at 213 Circle Drive in Curtiss. Tickets for ages 6 and over are $5 each, while children 5 and under eat for free.
There will be busing to/from the Abbotsford School District’s south parking lot, and the farm.

Ebaughs work together to give attention to their efforts
By Sherry Newell Contributing writer
WAVERLY, Iowa –
There is a lot going on at Ebaugh Dairy.
The family of ve – Jeremy and Sara and their children, Joe, John and Jeb – milks 210 cows, raises its youngstock and farms 550 acres with a bit of part-time help.
The youngest son, Jeb, also raises 60 laying hens and sells eggs and wrestles for his seventh-grade team.
The older two sons, Joe and John, run a custom baling business and both wrestle for Upper Iowa University in Fayette. They make roughly 25,000 small bales for area farmers each summer with help from friends.
Sara raises and sells St. Bernard puppies but is on the farm full time as well.
Jeremy works with them all, thankful for the family’s commitment to the farm.
It goes to show none of the Ebaughs are afraid of being too busy. Along with the cows and chickens, the
Putting the family in farm
Ebaugh farm is home to a 50cow Angus herd started by the older boys when they won a calf scramble at the county fair.
“They said, ‘Dad, we need a hobby,’” Sara said. “It was supposed to be 10, 15 or 20 animals. (Jeremy) doesn’t know when to stop.”
In fact, Jeremy has not stopped despite tearing a meniscus in his knee while sorting cattle on the ice last January.
“He never quit,” Sara said. “He was supposed to be on crutches.”
Jeremy said he has always enjoyed cows and farming but plans to address the injury eventually.
Sara grew up on a nearby beef and hog farm not far from where the family now lives. She met Jeremy when her father hired him to help bale hay. Jeremy bought his grandfather’s farm in the spring of 1995, and he and Sara began dating shortly thereafter. Like his son, Jeremy raised chickens as a boy and used the money to buy a John Deere B to tinker with.
Until 11 years ago, the family milked in stanchions but then built a parlor in 2012. They now milk in a swing-16. One of the freestall hoop buildings collapsed in heavy, wet snow in January, which means a new project for the
family soon.
“I could see the tarp moving back and forth,” Jeremy said. “We’ll maybe build a steel pole barn now.” Luckily, no cows were hurt in the collapse.
Joe and John return home
to the farm from college on weekends and Wednesdays in the wrestling off-season, when there is no conditioning work for their sport and no classes to attend.
Both young men were on the state wrestling podium as
high schoolers and were recruited to Upper Iowa by a former high school coach. Coincidentally, the college was launching an agribusiness major, which is what they wanted to study.

SHERRY NEWELL/DAIRY STAR
The Ebaugh family – Jeb (from le ), Sara, Jeremy, Joe and John – put du es on pause for a few minutes March 29 on their farm near Waverly, Iowa. The Ebaughs milk 210 cows in a swing-16 parlor.
In addition to their custom baling business, they earn money from the cows they own within the dairy herd.
Joe said he thinks farming has made them better wrestlers.
“It’s knowing there is always work to be done,” he said. “To succeed, you have to do the work.”
Their wrestling also beneted from their farmhouse basement being outtted as a weight room with a practice mat. The brothers have gotten extra practice by taking each other on. That goes for 14-year-old Jeb, who said he has learned new moves from his brothers.
The boys credit their parents with supporting their sport and creating their own personal wrestling room.
“Santa always brings them some (weight-lifting) equipment,” Sara said.
Between John and Sara, there is also time to post farming videos to TikTok with hopes they will answer questions about dairy farming. The
videos typically receive 3,000 to 4,000 views; some garner many more. Their channel has 115,000 followers.
Despite all the family’s ventures, Jeremy and Sara make it a point to get away to watch their sons wrestle, most often with one parent staying home for chores and the other attending nearby meets.
The two older boys also remember a few family vacations. The Ebaughs made trips to the Black Hills, the zoo and Door County, Wisconsin, over three summers when Jeremy’s sister and husband farmed with them from 2009 to 2012.
But John said being on the farm brings back fonder memories.
“We’re a close family because we always work together,” he said.
His mother agreed.
“This farm brings the family together,” she said. “We can kind of read each other’s minds.”

Questions for Mitch Petrie
Tell us your favorite experience of Elijah helping with chores. My dad, John, and I both have dairy farms, and Elijah oats between our farms and helps where needed. He is familiar with both of our farms, and if something needs to be done, he gets it done. Elijah is doing the school-to-work program, and it’s a good experience for him and for us. He helps get chores done earlier, especially during the busy season, getting us in the elds quicker to get our crops harvested.
What qualities does Elijah have that benet the farm? Elijah has a hard work ethic. If he didn’t have that, he wouldn’t be willing to put in the hours he does. He’s also not afraid to get his hands dirty. He gets work done by himself without me there. For example, my wife just had a baby, and he was able to ll in while I was at the hospital.
Questions for Elijah
What are your responsibilities on the farm? My responsibilities on the farm include general chores, milking, maintenance and eldwork. I work at the farm every morning before school from 5:30-9:45 a.m. and then usually every day after school starting at 5 p.m. or earlier if we are busy in the elds. I also help on Sunday morning and evening.
When did you begin helping on the farm? I started working on the farm in about sixth grade because my cousin asked me to help pick stones with them as he worked there before me. I just fell in love with the type of work and livestock. How do you balance school, extracurricular activities and farm chores? I balance work and school by doing the youth apprenticeship program at school. That allows me to skip school and work for a few hours in the morning. I also work at night when I don’t have golf practice.
How has working on the farm shaped your character? Working on the farm has made a stronger work ethic out of me and taught me many real-life skills, such as nances and much more.
What do you love most about farm life? I love the farm life because it’s very much hands-on work, and in my case, I have a very good boss. He teaches me skills and lets me do things rather than doing it himself.
What is one thing you have learned from working alongside your employers? One thing I’ve learned working alongside my bosses is how to care for livestock and do things right.
What are your future plans? To attend Fox Valley Technical College to do the farm operations program to better understand agriculture. I then plan to bring that knowledge back to the operation to better the herd.
