Celebrating America’s favorite pastime Krebs gives back to community through on-farm baseball eld By Stacey Smart
stacey.s@dairystar.com
SUN PRAIRIE, Wis. – Steps away from the stanchion barn at Krebs Family Farm near Sun Prairie is a slice of baseball heaven. This is where Bruce Krebs and his sons, Ryan and Justin, built their very own eld of dreams. Carved from a former
pasture, the full-scale Little League eld was born from a love for baseball. “When the boys were young, they told me, ‘Dad, we need our own eld,’” Bruce said. “They started putting dents in the shed because they were getting so good.” When Bruce asked his mom, who owned the farm at the time, if it would be OK to build a baseball eld, she said,

Bruce Krebs, with the help of his sons, JusƟn and Ryan, built Krebs Field in 2004 on their dairy farm near Sun Prairie, Wisconsin. For years, the eld has been used by LiƩle League teams for pracƟces and scrimmages.

JusƟn (leŌ) and Bruce Krebs stand in a corneld on their farm where they milk approximately 32 cows and farm 560 acres near Sun Prairie, Wisconsin. Along with Bruce’s other son, Ryan, the Krebs also maintain a baseball eld on their farm where area youth pracƟce throughout the summer.
‘You have to ask the cows.’ The eld became a reality in 2004 when Ryan was 10 and Justin, 8 – giving these farm boys the perfect place to practice their favorite sport. They named it Krebs Field, and soon their baseball teams were practicing and playing games there as well. For the Krebs family, baseball was in-
tegral to life, and a eld on the farm combined work and play in one place. When Justin grew up, he chose to keep farming with his dad, and today, the duo milks approximately 32 cows and farms 560 acres. Part of their acreage includes 189 acres that Justin rents from Bruce’s aunt and cousin and
in turn sells the feed and grain that he grows. Justin also raises Angus and Holstein steers for additional income and hopes to buy more land in the future. Ryan has a full-time job off the farm but helps with eldwork as well as maintenance on the baseball eld in Turn to KREBS | Page 4

his spare time. Their mom, Helen, also works off the farm but puts a lot of time and effort into growing a variety of beautiful owers to compliment the property. “We’re really lucky,” Bruce said. “Ryan and Justin are the best.” The farm has been in the family since 1939, and Bruce is the third generation to run the farm. When Bruce was in sixth grade, he convinced his dad not to sell the cows, and by the time he graduated from high school, Bruce owned most of the herd. Carrying on his parents’ legacy, Bruce is working hard to pass that legacy to Justin and ensure a future for his son as the fourth generation. When he turns 70, Bruce plans to stop taking an income. “If you do what you love for a living, you’re a success,” Bruce said. “When I was 18 years old, I started putting money away for retirement; not that I ever plan to retire.” Spring is extra busy for the Krebs who pour themselves into prepping their baseball diamond for another year of play. Teams have been coming to practice at Krebs Field ever since Justin started Little League in 2007. Bruce coached Justin’s team, and Ryan’s team also practiced on the eld. “The eld has really transformed since we were little,” Ryan said.

“When he rst started to make it, Dad took a chisel and drove around. The grass looked like pasture, and there was no fence or dirt behind second base. We marked it off, so we knew where 60 feet was. We also had no back stop. It looked more like a farm eld than a baseball diamond, but we wanted something, and that’s what we had.” Justin agreed. “It was a lot of work getting it to where it is now,” he said. Even though it would take a couple years before the area started to look like a real baseball eld, the Krebs overlooked no detail when building their eld. They continued to add more features, like a backstop when too many balls got lost, a fence and two foul poles as well as an electronic scoreboard in the outeld. The center eld fence is 242 feet, the left eld foul pole is 215 feet, and the right eld foul pole is 195 feet. Other amenities include bleachers, a bench and a United States ag waving in center eld. Currently, Sun Prairie Little League teams use the eld for practices and scrimmages. Tournament teams from Columbus also practice on Krebs

Teams are allowed to use the eld free of charge. “I never ask for anything in return for use of the eld,” Bruce said. “You have to give back a little. I don’t have time to volunteer, but I do have land and can give people an opportunity to see what a farm looks like and get away for a bit. It takes a lot of time and effort to do this, but I appreciate the thankyou’s.” Before the season starts, they install the bases, rake and paint lines on the eld. With approximately 100 practices held on the eld each year, regular upkeep is critical. “We rake, chalk and paint all the time,” Ryan said. Krebs Field is kept in pristine condition, with the perfectly manicured grass resembling a giant, green carpet. Justin keeps the grass cut short by mowing the eld every other day. “We need to keep it short for good playing conditions,” he said. “During summer, the players’ cleats help keep it short too.” The Krebs also built a batting cage in the shed next to the eld, and area teams borrow use of this space as well. skills. The building’s walls are lined with baseball memorabilia including framed newspaper clippings and photos featuring the teams Ryan and Justin were a part of. Notes and cards from area teams expressing appreciation for using the facility also hang on the wall. “Hopefully my kids will play on Krebs Field someday too,” said Justin, who will soon be marrying his high school sweetheart, Sammy. Growing up, Ryan and Justin were fortunate to have the best resources at their disposal to excel as baseball players. Justin won back-to-back Division 1 high school state championships with Sun Prairie in 2013 and 2014, and Ryan won a state championship in 2012. In his senior year, Justin turned a game-ending double play when he caught a line drive at short stop which he then threw to rst base. Justin, 26, now coaches junior varsity baseball for his former high school. When Bruce created a special place for his sons to play baseball, he built a home for making memories. For nearly 20 years, Krebs Field has been an inspiration to the Krebs family and so many others in the community who they share it with.

First generation excels in dairy cattle genetics Houdek family receives Minnesota PDCA Distinguished Breeder Award By Kate Rechtzigel kate.r@dairystar.com
Editor’s note: This is part of a series of articles highlighting the 2021 and 2022 Minnesota Purebred Dairy Cattle Associations’ distinguished breeders. CALEDONIA, Minn. − Aaron Houdek knows the names of former distinguished breeder award recipients. To think his family’s name would be among those was an aspiration. “You look at the names of the people. It’s a lot of people who we want to model our breeding practices around and a lot of our close friends too,” Aaron said. “To be nominated was cool and to win was impressive. It shows that what we’re doing as far as our breeding philosophies are paying off.” Aaron is the son of Wayne and Kris Houdek. The Houdeks were unable to attend, so their son, Eric, accepted their 2021 Minnesota Purebred Dairy Cattle Association Distinguished Breeder Award at the Minnesota PDCA’s luncheon during the Minnesota All-Breeds Convention March 11 in Willmar. “We were pretty humbled; it’s quite an honor,” Wayne said. Wayne and Kris are the rst generation on their farm. Together, they milk 450 cows and
run 1,100 acres with their sons, Aaron and Andy, and eight partand full-time employees in Houston County near Caledonia. Eric works for a reproductive services company and is a genetic consultant for the farm. Their oldest son, Jacob, does construction in Wisconsin. The farm was started April 1, 1992, with 42 grade cows. In 2000, the Houdeks introduced registered cattle to the herd. “Eric was a big push for why we went registered. He always loved registered cattle,” Wayne said. “It also made (farming) more worth it (for us) to see the cows, the pedigrees and classication numbers.” Andy agreed. “We were already doing the work so it kind of made sense,” he said. Today the farm is also involved with genomics and embryo transfer and is in a partnership called Four-Cal Genetics with three other local dairymen: John Diersen, Matt Hendel and Josh Vatland. “With having three other dairymen, you can split your risk and capture a higher dollar to animal with less investment into it,” Aaron said. “It works really well and has helped progress our genetics and genomics.” The Houdeks’ breeding philosophy aims for moderate sized,

ConƟnued from HOUDEKS | Page 6 change from a 2-year-old to a 3-year-old cow.” If cows are low in production, high in somatic cell count, low in fat and protein, old or hard breeding cows, they are bred to beef. About 20% of the herd is bred this way. They also breed 25% of their herd with embryos and sell about 20 cows a year to other dairymen. “If a cow is in heat on the wrong day and she’s still a good cow, she is going to get an embryo,” Aaron said. “When you put those embryos in fresh, they are going to stick a lot better than they would frozen.” The Houdeks genetic strategies are mainly focused on their production cows. However, they do breed about 5% of the herd for type where they look for balanced type, positive milk and sire stacks. They enjoyed exhibiting these cattle at local shows when the boys were juniors and now lease them to family. Some of their favorite show cows have been Aftershock Raine, Morty Boston and Dundee Dory. “Eric wanted this registered heifer that came into the Rochester show when we were rst getting registered cattle. I liked this other one,” Wayne said. “It turned out she
was the better heifer of the two.” Aftershock Raine EX-94 is the daughter of the cow purchased in Rochester. Raine went on to win her class at the Minnesota State Fair open show in 2018. Over the years, they have updated to improve cow comfort and converted their main freestall barn into a tunnel-ventilated barn in the fall of 2021. “One of Dad’s favorite sayings is that if you take care of the cows, they are going to take care of us,” Aaron said. “The whole environment of the cow is huge.” Wayne agreed. “We were the rst herd in Houston County to go over 25,000 pounds years ago,” he said. “I remember when we went over 600 pounds butterfat, we thought that was a big step years ago.” Outside of the farm, Wayne is president of the Dairy Herd Improvement Association board in Houston County, and Kris is president of the Houston County American Dairy Association. The family is also a part of the Houston County Holstein Club, where Wayne is the director. Andy is a member on the board of directors at Northeastern Iowa Community College for their dairy founda-
tion program and is on the operations committee for the farm in Calmar, Iowa. Aaron is the dairy judging coach for the county’s 4-H program, and Eric helps coach the University of Minnesota judging team and judges county and state fair shows. In the future, Aaron and Andy plan to take over the farm. “If it wouldn’t be for the boys, we wouldn’t be where we are at,” Kris said. Aaron agreed. “We worked at other dairies in college and when we came home, we learned that we really appreciate what we came home to,” he said. For the Houdeks, their breeding philosophy is part of what they value on their farm, the consistent strategies and good genetics. It is also one they encourage other dairy farmers to consider as they strive to meet their own breeding goals. “It’s tough to pick out bulls, but ask for help. Ask for resources,” Aaron said. “Get a different set of eyes. We’re looking at these cows every day, and someone else might see something that we don’t see.”

Editor’s note: This is part of a series of articles highlighting the 2021 and 2022 Minnesota Purebred Dairy Cattle Associations’ distinguished breeders. PELICAN RAPIDS, Minn. – Mastering a farm’s genetics for their breed of choice is different for everyone. For Brian and Barbara Kimm, it is productive cows that last in the herd and have a wide variety of genetic potential that suite their fancy. The Kimms are the third generation on their farm, milking 85 cows in a tiestall barn and farming 540 acres near Pelican Rapids. They are one of three remaining dairy farms in Clay County, but have far-reaching inuence in the industry. The Kimms were named a 2021 Minnesota PDCA Distinguished
Breeder along with Stacey and Todd Leiding from Fountain; Clover Glen Farm from Claremont; and Wayne and Kris Houdek from Caledonia at the Minnesota PDCA luncheon during the Minnesota All-Breeds Convention March 11 in Willmar. “It was very humbling they thought enough of what we are doing out here to recognize it,” Brian said. The Kimms, while focusing on having quality cattle, have received recognition from the Brown Swiss Association for a variety of accomplishments. The Kimms were the 2020 BSA Protein Genetic Honor Herd Award winner, have been a BSA Genetic Honor Herd for over 10 years and had the No. 1 Progressive Performance Rank Brown Swiss in the U.S. for three years. Currently, the herd is averaging a 4.1% milk fat and 3.4% protein content Turn to KIMMS | Page 11

ConƟnued from KIMMS | Page 10 with an average 75,000 somatic cell count. While the Kimms are receiving recognition for their Brown Swiss herd, the family owned a Guernsey herd 30 years ago. “I grew up with Guernseys,” Brian said. “We got to the point where the genetic base was getting narrow, and our purebred cattle weren’t sticking around long enough.” Then, came the Brown Swiss in 1992. There was a young 4-H member who showed dairy and needed a place to house his Brown Swiss

Brian and Barbara Kimm’s herd is 85% registered Brown Swiss. The breed is known for their docility and natural curiosity.
cattle. The Kimms’ barn had a few extra stalls at the time, and they offered to help the young man. After the person’s 4-H career was over, the Kimms purchased the Brown Swiss cattle and began incorporating those genetics into their dairy herd. This positive experience with the Brown Swiss breed piqued the Kimms’ interest and inuenced their decision to begin crossbreeding their cattle with Brown Swiss. Today, about 85% of the herd is registered Brown Swiss. “(Brown) Swiss are pretty mellow and generally easy to work with,” Brian said. “We don’t like to keep cattle around that are hard to work with.” The Kimms love the temperament of their Brown Swiss cows. The breed’s natural curiosity and friendly disposition make for the perfect t at the farm. “If you’re working on xing the fence, the Holsteins will stand there and watch, the Guernseys come over and watch, while the Brown Swiss come over to help,” Brian said. Barbara agreed. “The cattle love to come up and chew on your jacket and play with your tools,” she said. Besides the Brown Swiss, the Kimms have experimented with crossing cattle to Montbéliarde and Holstein. Brian’s breeding philosophy is to breed for a productive cow. He selects for a medium-sized frame, good udder, solid feet and legs and in the upper end with production. Their ability to look to the future and problem solve has brought the next generation back to their farm; something the longtime dairy family is proud of. As the industry changes and the next generation steps up to the plate, Brian looks to his experiences to give advice for other dairy farmers. “If there is something you want to do, go ahead, do it, and don’t wait for the perfect time because there never will be one,” he said. “There is always a way to get it done if you look hard enough.” The Kimms’ goal is to be protable and self-sustaining in their own way, and with the Brown Swiss they are able to achieve that.

Got grass? Consider an alfalfa mix to optimize forage quality, yield By Stacey Smart
stacey.s@dairystar.com
MADISON, Wis. – As farmers enter the elds to cut rst-crop hay, thoughts of how to improve the quality of their alfalfa stands or potentially produce more forage might come to mind. One way is by adding grass. “A lot of the country uses pure alfalfa, but there are some advantages of an alfalfa-grass mix,” said Dr. Don Miller, director of product development at Alforex Seeds. “Although it Dr. Don Miller takes more manageAlforex Seeds ment to effectively deal with alfalfa-grass mixtures, they have the potential for higher animal performance and offer health benets to the animal as well.” During his presentation, “Management tips for harvesting alfalfa and grass mixes,” on PDPW’s “The Dairy Signal,” Miller highlighted the benets of incorporating grass into alfalfa and shared tips on the proper ways to manage and harvest alfalfa-grass mixtures. Forage quality is a key benet of the alfalfa-grass mix. Adding grass to alfalfa provides a source of more digestible ber
that supplies energy to the diet without dropping rumen pH, generally improving herd health. Increased butterfat, less acidosis and improved reproduction and reduced laminitis are some of the perks of an alfalfa-grass mixture. These mixtures have higher total ber than alfalfa alone. Alfalfa grass almost always yields more than straight alfalfa and also incurs less leafhopper damage, Miller said. In University of Wisconsin-Madison trials, both alfalfa-orchardgrass and alfalfa-tall fescue yielded 7% more than straight alfalfa. The improvement in forage quality also indicated that both mixtures would result in more milk per ton and per acre. “The ber of grass is more digestible than that of conventional alfalfa,” Miller said. “With increased emphasis on ber digestibility, grass is a means of getting more energy in the ration.” Alfalfa-grass mixtures also provide improved yield in the seeding year. “They can take off early in the spring and give us some pretty good yields and overall improve the year’s production of forage,” Miller said. If alfalfa is injured by winter, insects or disease, elds will also yield better in later years as the two species compensate for one another. An alfalfa-grass mix can provide better forage production under diverse growing conditions. A mix provides more consistent yield in variable soils, and grass lls in areas of the eld that are less suited for alfalfa. Farmers will also see less weed encroachment in weaker areas of the eld where alfalfa is not performing as well. Furthermore, grasses tend to tolerate weather swings better than alfalfa. They

ConƟnued from GRASS | Page 14 also act as a buffer against legume winterkill as some grasses can survive ice sheets in low spots of the eld better than alfalfa. These mixtures also have a more desirable response to manure applications, taking advantage of nitrogen in the manure. An alfalfa-grass mix also has greater trafc tolerance than pure alfalfa, which is an advantage when applying manure. Alfalfa-grass mixtures provide greater erosion control than pure alfalfa stands by lling in weak spots. When there is 30%-40% grass in the mix, windrows are a little ufer, offering more rapid drying of haylage or hay. In addition, many grasses can tolerate standing water better than alfalfa. “We used to say that alfalfa can’t stand wet feet, and that’s mainly because of some fungal diseases that attack the root system,” Miller said. “Grass can really compen-

sate in low lying areas of an alfalfa eld if you have some alfalfa dying.” For high-quality dairy forage, Miller said to maintain forage stands that contain 30%-40% grass. When the composition of the stand is 60%-70% alfalfa, the resulting nitrogen xation can meet the needs of the grass species. Maintaining the optimal alfalfa-grass mix percentage in a eld can be tricky as the percentage of components can change over time. Factors that can cause shifts in alfalfa or grass percentages include weather after seeding, soil fertility and cutting heights. More rain equals more grass, whereas dry conditions will favor alfalfa. When selecting an alfalfa-grass mix, choose the best adapted variety of alfalfa for the region by taking into account yield, forage quality, disease, pest resistance, fall dormancy and winter survival. When selecting a
grass, Miller recommended looking beyond species as there have been large improvements in varieties related to performance. Pick medium to late-maturing varieties that match up with the alfalfa cutting schedule, such as late-maturing orchardgrass. Things to look for in a grass include seasonal distribution of forage yield, winter hardiness, yield potential and disease resistance, such as tolerance to rust. “Look at university data for your region and investigate some of these grasses to make sure you have a grass that will t the conditions you’re trying to grow it in,” Miller said. Popular grass species include late-maturing orchardgrass, tall fescue and meadow fescue. Used in 20%-30% of alfalfa-grass plantings, tall fescue is the most common

ConƟnued from GRASS | Page 15 of these. Meadow fescue has higher digestibility than most grasses at all stages of maturity, and its yield and forage quality meet or exceed other cool-season grasses, making it a good choice for a mix. Less popular grass species would be timothy and smooth bromegrass. Both tend to produce a lot of forage in the spring but little the rest of the year, slowing down in the middle of summer. However, some people might want to use timothy for the horse market, Miller said. Meadow fescue, orchardgrass and tall fescue tolerate three- to four-cut systems, while smooth bromegrass, meadow brome and timothy are better suited to two- to three-cut systems. Grass can be the perfect way to increase yield from a thinning alfalfa eld. To extend the life of a poor alfalfa stand that might be suffering from disease or winterkill, use summer annuals like teff, annual rye grass or Italian rye grass. The grass can be drilled into an existing stand of alfalfa to thicken it and provide more forage. Follow the recommended seeding rates to obtain 30%-40% grass in the stand. Plant orchardgrass at 4 pounds per acre or 18 seeds per square foot, tall fescue at 6 pounds per acre or 23 seeds per square foot; and meadow fescue at 6 pounds per acre or 27 seeds per square foot. Plant alfalfa at 10 pounds per acre or 47 seeds per square foot. Miller said alfalfa is normally cut at 2 inches and grass at 3-4 inches. When cutting an alfalfa-grass mix, one must compromise and cut it at 3-4 inches to ensure the coexistence of both species. “Raise the cutter bar to avoid cutting grass too low and to cut alfalfa high enough where the grass will still persist,” Miller said. “During that rst year, 4 inches might be a little better for the grass. Then maybe during the second year, you can go down to 3 inches. If we cut it too close, the grass is going to suffer.” When it comes to equipment, a sickle bar mower works well for pure stands of alfalfa but not for grass or alfalfa grass. Disc mowers are preferred in these situations. Adjust the cutting height of the disc mower to 3-4 inches, which will ensure the grass survives while also producing less ash or dirt in the mix. If grass is too high in the mix, cut it at 2 inches. If alfalfa is too high in the mix, maintain 3-4 inches of cutting height, but raise the cutter bar and add nitrogen fertilizer which favors grass but is not detrimental to alfalfa. With the high cost of inputs for corn and soybean meal, farmers might consider adjusting the cow’s diet, and an alfalfa-grass mix could be the ideal option. “We’ve seen a lot of corn and less alfalfa added to the diet over time, and now might be the time to consider an alfalfa-grass mix as a good supply of protein in the (total mixed ration),” Miller said. “Even if you have pure stands of alfalfa, it could help replace some protein costs. Some of these grasses can be really good on quality and ber digestibility in providing more energy. Some alfalfas with good ber digestibility also have improvement in leaf-to-stem ratio so the more leaves we have on that plant, the more protein.” Certain grasses do better in certain soil types. For example, in light soils, water can be an issue so orchardgrass and tall fescues are preferred. In medium soils, perennial rye grass or festolium tend to be the best choice. In shallow soils, smooth brome is a good option. Some grasses work better under wet conditions, and others work better under dryer conditions. “I think there are a lot of options out there where you can netune the grass for your soil needs and farm needs as well as across the season to make sure you get the production that you need when you need it,” Miller said.
