DeBruin retires from Holstein Association USA holding classication record
By Danielle Nauman danielle.n@dairystar.com
LAKE MILLS, Wis. –
The year was 1985. Michael Jordan won the Rookie of the Year title, Ronald Reagan was sworn in for his second term, the movie “Back to the Future” debuted as did the “Calvin and Hobbes” comic strip, and Maureen DeBruin embarked on a 38-year journey as a Holstein Association USA Inc. classier.
DeBruin, of Lake Mills, retired last month, closing a career that allowed her to travel to nearly every state, create lasting connections with the breeders she encountered and evaluate over 1.1 million cows.
When she started her career, DeBruin was only the second female to work in that capacity for the Holstein Association USA, starting six months after the rst.
“In those early days, there were always some people who didn’t think classifying was a job a woman should be doing, but it was rarely the farmers that expressed that concern,” DeBruin said.
Being hired as a classi-
er was not the rst time in her dairy career that DeBruin had been among the female pioneers.
As a dairy science student studying at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, she was one of very few female students in the department, and she was an early member of the campus organization that became known as the Association of Women in Agriculture.
After graduation, she took a job mating cows with what was then known as Tri-State Breeders in Westby and then spent four years as an agriculture teacher at a time when she was one of only ve female ag teachers in the state.
“I had always wanted to classify cows,” DeBruin said. “It was a natural t for me with my passion for judging and studying dairy science, but when I graduated, Holstein (Association USA) didn’t hire females in that capacity.”
DeBruin was raised on her family’s registered Brown Swiss and grade Holstein farm, and it was there that her interest in evaluating dairy cattle was born.

June Dairy Month
“My family was always very competitive as far as evaluating dairy cattle,” DeBruin said. “There was never a shortage of good discussion among us when it came to cows and what they should look like, and my parents never treated us girls any differently in that aspect from our brothers.”
DeBruin was on a team that won the National 4-H Dairy Cattle Judging Contest and traveled to Europe to compete. She also spent many years coaching youth dairy judging teams.
That background as a Brown Swiss breeder laid the foundation for how DeBruin looked at dairy cattle.
“I was always known as being very critical of feet and legs,” DeBruin said.
Over the years of evaluating cows, DeBruin has watched as the industry shifted toward efciency.
“Now we score as many cows as we did back then with less than half the staff we had back then,” DeBruin said. “When I started, it was pretty standard that you would only do two or three smaller tiestall herds a day. Now you might only do one farm a day, but herd sizes have grown so that you’re looking at so many more cows.”
DeBruin said that 38 years ago, classication was more of a social event for the farmers. Cows were clipped and washed, the neighbors would come over, and the visit typically ended in the farmhouse, eating a lunch while stamping scores onto registration papers.
“Times have changed; people don’t spend as much time preparing cattle any more, and roughly less than 5% of the cows we see are clipped and tted, and that is ne,” DeBruin said. “Although that is nice, it is important to be able to evaluate cows in their working environment.”
DeBruin said her biggest advice is to put any preparation efforts into doing things that might change how the classier sees a cow, such as trimming feet.
“If a cow’s toes are long and she’s sitting back on her heels, I have to evaluate her that way, and that will affect her nal score,” she said. “We ask that the udders are clipped in the winter and that you have all of your paperwork prepared.”
DeBruin’s greatest memories involve families that were just launching their interest in improving the functional type in their herds, typically because the next generation was expressing an interest in showing, breeding and developing their own herds and cow families.
“I always liked having a good discussion with the farmers about their cows and what I saw and how they could potentially improve their herd,”
DeBruin said. “I never minded when the kids stayed home from school and asked questions. That is how we all learn.”
As a classication staff, continuing education and self-evaluation were important parts of the position. Classiers met for trainings on a regular basis and received quarterly reports breaking down their work in statistical terms.
“You would be able to use those reports to see how you were seeing each linear breakdown and if your scores and ranges were consistent with the other classiers,” DeBruin said. “Having consistency among classiers in the program is important. We all have a certain kind of cow we like, but you really need to let the linear lead you to the score.”
Having scored over 1.1 million cows makes DeBruin the association’s all-time leading classier for number of cows evaluated. DeBruin said she had guessed she was somewhere around the million mark but was surprised to hear the nal total.
“I never minded ying and going to California and Texas,” DeBruin said. “Some of the classiers didn’t like to y, so I have been doing those large herds for a long time.”
DeBruin scored cows in every state except Alabama, New Jersey, Alaska and Hawaii.
“One area I always loved going to was Lynden, Washington,” she said. “It was one of the prettiest places on earth, and there were so many fabulous cows there. Now most of the area is devoted to raspberry and blueberry farming.”
One of the most treacherous experiences was scoring cows in North Dakota during the Halloween blizzard of 1991. DeBruin said she has also scored cattle on several prison farms where she has been escorted by armed guards.
Having seen so many cows, DeBruin said she has many she has admired that she has a difcult time picking out a favorite.
“I put Snow-N Denises Dellia up for 95; she was such a tremendous cow,” DeBruin said. “My rst committee cow was Queen N-Rosa-Line G-V Tidy owned by Gil-Tex Holsteins in California.”
As for what the future holds, DeBruin said for the time being, her garden is holding her attention, and she will continue to serve as the superintendent of the International Post-Secondary Dairy Cattle Judging Contest at World Dairy Expo.
“I really love to garden, so I’m enjoying that right now,” DeBruin said. “But, my family gives me until about the end of June before I’m going stir crazy and looking for some type of part-time job.”

Capturing colors, memories on canvas
Carlson brings her love of dairy to art
By Amy Kyllo amy.k@star-pub.com
PINE ISLAND, Minn. –
From the grass underfoot to a winning moment in the show ring to a portrait of a favorite cow, Danielle Carlson can tell a story with paint on canvas.
“I’m trying to get people to be able to see it and feel … the moment or the place,” Carlson said.
Carlson is an artist and member of the dairy community. She works part time as a relief herdsman at Sheeknoll Farms near Rochester while being a stay-at-home mom for her and her husband Dave’s toddler, Joey, at their home in Pine Island.
Carlson grew up on her family’s dairy farm and worked there until they sold their cows in 2019.
“Without a dairy farm, (art) is the only thing I have that’s uniquely me,” Carlson said.
Through her art, Carlson helps preserve memories for herself and others.
“It’s like you connect yourself to that moment and place again, even though it’s gone,” Carlson said.
Carlson draws on her ex-
perience for authentic details.
“When you’re painting a eld of grass, … in reality it’s not perfect,” she said. “There are weeds, there are thistles, there are spots where the cows peed and the grass grew twice as tall as it did elsewhere. … Because I know that, I’m able to … tell a story with a brush.”
Recently, Carlson was commissioned by Jeannette Sheehan for an original painting. The painting is based off of a photo by Axel Hartmann. The pastoral scene depicts a large shade tree with a herd of cows at rest underneath in the grass. Carlson has done this scene several times, but this time, Sheehan had an idea for a twist: Instead of placing random cows in the painting, she asked Carlson to add famous show cows.
Carlson’s endeavor to add the limelight to the pasture was not without challenges, including trying to gure out what one particular cow actually looked like.
“I saw on one cow sometimes the tters had spray painted over a white spot,” Carlson said. “In some pictures she had this little white spot on the shoulder, and then in some pictures, she didn’t.”
Sheehan will be donat-
ing the nished painting to be auctioned off at the National Holstein Convention in June during the annual women’s scholarship fundraiser.
Carlson’s work is char-
acterized by vibrant tones, whether the colors are standing alone big and bold or shining out of the shadows of a white hue on an animal’s coat.
“You see colors if you start
paying attention,” Carlson said. “You’ll look at the snow; there are purples and greens and blues and pinks and yel-

lows. … Otherwise, if you just color it white and gray, it’s just going to look nasty. But, if you’d put all these reections in there, all of a sudden, it’s got life.”
One of Carlson’s most treasured paintings is of her favorite cow, Rockstar. Rockstar was born a week late, and Carlson said she was worried the lateness meant it would be a bull calf. She remembers being sad at the birth, thinking the large calf lying beside its mother was probably a bull calf. To her surprise, the calf was a heifer.
Rockstar excelled in the show ring and became dear to Carlson’s heart. Today, her living room features a large painted portrait of Rockstar on one wall and Rockstar’s custom-tanned hide on the other.
Carlson has a lifetime passion for art.
“When most kids quit scribbling things, I kept doing it,” she said.
Some of her paintings capture memories while most are simply beautiful animals such as horses, which she enjoys painting, or nature. She has also dabbled in customizing Breyer horses and doing taxidermy.
In college, Carlson, pursued a dairy science major and took art classes as electives. After college, she took a break from art for around a decade. Farming full time alongside her dad and grandpa on their 75-cow dairy consumed much of her energy.
“You don’t need an outlet for all of that creativity because you have to apply it when you (have to) gure out how to x things and make things work (on the farm),” she said.
When they sold their cows in 2019, she began to give time to art again besides working on other dairy farms.
Carlson uses watercolors when she needs her art to be portable. For most of her pieces, she uses a combination of acrylic and oil paints. She has developed a system of quickly making a background painting using fast-
drying acrylics. Then, she comes in with oil paint and uses her artistry to create the ne detail, rich colors, shadows and variation on top of the acrylic.
“With oils, you can change the tint on something and have it be so thin that you can just totally change the color without losing any of the shadows and everything that you’ve put on,” she said. “I could turn that cow purple in ve minutes if I wanted to.”
Carlson uses an image projector to help sketch the outline for many of her paintings or to replicate a piece she likes.
Currently, Carlson is interested in painting commissioned work. Her own walls are getting full, so she has slowed down the amount of painting she is doing. She charges a at rate by the square inch.
In the future, Carlson wants to simply keep making art. She has a special understanding of the transitory nature of physical ability. Her mom, who also enjoys art, has carpal tunnel syndrome and is unable to hold a pencil. Her brother was in a serious car accident and now cannot use his right hand.
“My only goal is to still be able to do it,” she said.

Biding their time
Michigan farm begins transition plan
By Abby Wiedmeyer abby.w@dairystar.com
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.
– Each day the team at E-D Farms works through chores using their 43-year-old trigon parlor, they know they are one step closer to an upgrade.
Andrew and Cassandra Eadie are in the planning stages of transitioning to become 50-50 partners with Andrew’s parents. They hope to begin building a new facility in three years to accommodate a robotic milking system.
For now, they are learning and growing while paying down debt.
“In the next ve years, we will be transitioned fully,” Cassandra Eadie said. “That’s the game plan.”
The team milks 525 cows near Grand Rapids. Eadie serves as the dairy facilitator while her husband manages the agronomy and eldwork. Her brother-in-law, Norman, is a full-time employee and handles the mechanical side of the business. Her father-inlaw helps full time, and her mother-in-law helps facilitate meetings among the team and assists with child care.
A crew of non-family
members is on staff to get milking and other daily chores done. This includes a full-time herdsman who does all the breeding and a full-time feeder.
Eadie said they work hard to provide an inclusive culture at the farm. It has paid off by maintaining a loyal relationship with their employees. Some employees have worked there as long as 22 years.
“Our core values are faith, family, farming, honesty and integrity,” Eadie said. “We just try to make it appropriate for everyone to t in and not feel left out or uncomfortable.”
Cows are milked in two 12-hour shifts. There are seven groups, and four of those groups get milked three times a day. The milking employees have helped design the schedule so they achieve the desired amount of work hours and the cows are able to reach their full potential.
The herd of Holsteins is averaging 90 pounds per day with a 4.5% butterfat and 3.6% protein test. The team has been working hard to achieve such results by making selective breeding decisions not only for quality milk but also for udder composition to prepare for a robotic transition.
“I’m still learning and growing,” Eadie said. “If you don’t, you can’t improve your herd.”
The trigon parlor is a set of 15 stanchions in a triangle. Cows enter from two corners

and exit from the third. Eadie said it is not very efcient but has been held together and updated as much as possible with relevant milk machines to last as long as it has.
Cows are housed in
freestall barns bedded with sand from the farm’s own sand pit. When robots are added, they plan to expand to 600 cows and construct another
GEA DairyRobot R9500

The design flexibility of the milking robot allows you to choose voluntary milking in your preferred cow traffic style, or group milling with fixed milking times and the benefits of group parlor milking. Whichever you choose, the DairyRobot R9500 welcomes cow after cow and helps you manage every step in their lactation, for a new level of intelligent automated milking on your farm.

facility to accommodate the growing herd.
Heifers are housed off-site. Area concentrated animal feeding operation regulations prohibit more than 700 animals on one site, so the team is diligent about complying.
“With the price of labor, it’s either go bigger or stop milking,” Eadie said. “This parlor is not going to last forever.”
The farm has four locations: one for the milking setup and cows, one for feed, one for heifers and one for calves. They also raise approximately 240 head of Simmental-Angus-Holstein cattle for beef each year.
Eadie married into the operation and has been full time for two years. She has taken courses through their local nancial institution to educate herself on the business and human resource aspect of the farm. She is currently in a mentorship program through Greenstone Farm Credit. The program is 18 months long, and education comes from an older farmer who shares their experience with farm transition, business plans and personal growth. Upon
completion of the program, participants receive a percentage off of their rst beginning farm loan.
“I have an amazing Christian mentor, and I have learned a lot,” Eadie said.
Eadie also uses a separate farm coach to help with the transition process, and she said the extra knowledge has helped her better communicate with employees and the entire team to understand each other better.
The team is currently working on planting corn. They farm a total of 1,600 acres of corn, alfalfa, heifer hay, soybeans and wheat. All of their crops are used for feed. An additional 200 acres is rented to a squash farmer nearby, and her in-laws have a 17-acre blueberry patch with 11 varieties of berries as well.
With all the diversity in the operation, Eadie makes it a point to focus on the people involved in the work and promoting a healthy culture.
“We’re just a family-oriented farm,” Eadie said. “Employees come rst and then the cows; if you take care of your employees, they will take good care of your cows.”

USDA offers assistance to organic dairy producers
The U.S. Department of Agriculture announces assistance for dairy producers with the new Organic Dairy Marketing Assistance Program. OD-MAP is established to help mitigate market volatility, higher input and transportation costs, and unstable feed supply and prices that have created unique hardships in the organic dairy industry. Specically, under the ODMAP, USDA’s Farm Service Agency is making $104 million available to organic dairy operations to assist with projected marketing costs in 2023, calculated using their marketing costs in 2022.
FSA is providing nancial assistance for a producer’s projected marketing costs in 2023 based on their 2022 costs. ODMAP provides a one-time cost-share payment based on marketing costs on pounds of organic milk marketed in the 2022 calendar year.
ODMAP provides nancial assistance that will immediately support certied organic dairy operations during 2023 keeping organic dairy operations sustainable until markets return to more normal conditions.
FSA is accepting applications until July 24. To apply, producers should contact FSA at their local USDA Service Center. To complete the ODMAP application, producers must certify to pounds of 2022 milk production, show documentation of their organic certication, and submit a completed application form.
Organic dairy operations are required to provide their USDA certication of organic status conrming operation as an organic dairy in 2023 and 2022 along with the certication of 2022 milk production in hundredweight.
ODMAP complements other assistance available to dairy producers, including Dairy Margin Coverage and Supplemental DMC, with more than $300 million in benets paid for the 2023 program year to date. Learn more on the FSA dairy programs webpage.

Registration is open for the 2023 Precision Dairy Conference, a boots-on-theground event where attendees can learn from dairy producer panelists on how tech has affected their bottom line. In addition, the conference features short talks from industry leaders and student researchers on precision dairy topics and a showcase of startup companies.
The event is June 20-21 at the Hyatt Regency in Bloomington, Minnesota. Join us to learn from short talks and producer panels on how tech can help farmers improve environmental sustainability, labor management, animal health and welfare, and data integration for better decision making.
Register at z.umn.edu/PDCreg for this unique learning and networking event on dairy technology. For more information, visit https://precisiondairy.org or contact Marcia Endres at miendres@umn.edu.
Interactive virtual farm website expands access to dairy sustainability topics
A new interactive carbon calculator tool can help dairy farmers see sustainability principles in action and improve farm management decisions related to climate change.
The carbon calculator expands on the existing virtual farm website – www. virtualfarm.psu.edu – developed by researchers in Penn State’s College of Agricultural Sciences and Penn State Extension, in partnership with several universities, including the University of Wisconsin-Madison, an industry partner, the Dairy Innovation Center, and the creative services team at WPSU.
Website users can tour two virtual farms. One is a model of a 1,500-cow facility, while the other is a smaller-scale operation of 150 animals. Users can click on a particular aspect of the farms – such as pastures, housing, manure storage facilities, feed silos, milking facilities and more – and information related to that specic area will pop up, allowing for further exploration. Sustainability topics focus on milk production, herd and nutrient management, crops and soils, and greenhouse gases.
Another enhancement involves simplied fast facts about how dairy cows are managed on modern dairy farms. Topics include the cow life cycle, crop production, feed and energy on the farm, and manure management.
Mulhern to retire as NMPF president and CEO
NMPF President and CEO Jim Mulhern announced he will retire from his position at the end of this year, concluding a decade of service leading the organization and capping a 45-year career in U.S. agricultural and dairy policy.
Mulhern leaves NMPF in a commanding position, with the organization spearheading a once-a-generation update of federal milk marketing orders and advancing both a fairer economic and regulatory environment for dairy farmers and a more transparent marketplace for consumers amid the proliferation of plant-based dairy imposters. Through its partnerships with the U.S. Dairy Export Council and others, NMPF has supported policy changes to boost dairy exports, which are reaching records; and through its stewardship of the National Dairy FARM Program, it is enhancing dairy’s leadership agricultural sustainability and animal care.

National Dairy FARM Program opens nominations for annual FARM Excellence awards
The National Dairy Farmers Assuring Responsible Management Program Excellence Awards recognize farms and evaluators who demonstrate excellence in their engagement with the FARM Program. Awards are presented in four categories: Animal Care & Antibiotic Stewardship, Environmental Stewardship, Workforce Development and FARM Evaluator.
“We are so proud of the farms that participate in our program areas and our dedicated evaluators, and we believe it is important to publicly recognize the people that make the FARM Program so successful,” said Emily Yeiser Stepp, executive director of the FARM Program. “These awards are given to dairies and evaluators who exemplify on-farm social responsibility principles every day and each year I am blown away by the outpouring of support for the nominees from their peers.”
Farms or FARM evaluators can be nominated by fellow dairy farmers, members of their communities, extension, cooperative or processor staff, veterinarians, themselves or others. Nominations are open until 11:59 p.m. PDT Aug. 1 and should be submitted on the FARM website.
Nominated farms must have a current FARM Program evaluation in the respective category area and must be in good standing with the program. Evaluators who are nominated must be FARM Program certied in any of the program areas as of June 1. The awards are judged by a committee of FARM Farmer Advisory Council members and other subject matter experts.
Winners in each category will receive a hotel room and travel for two individuals to attend the Dairy Joint Annual Meeting Nov. 13-15 in Orlando, Florida, where the winners will be celebrated during a luncheon. Visit the FARM Excellence Awards page for more details.

When do you do chores and what chores do you do? I help with chores morning and night when there is no school. I milk cows, wash the parlor down, scrape with the skid loader and help feed calves. I feed and water the weaned calves every afternoon all year long. I also help drive grain cart and help wean pigs at my grandparents.
What is your favorite and least favorite chore? My favorite is feeding calves because they are cute little babies. My least favorite is bedding cows because it gets dusty.
Do you have a favorite animal on your farm? My beef heifer that I won through our FFA chapter. I named her Phoenix. She is red, and I like her because she is very docile.
What do you want to be when you grow up? I’m not sure, but I know it will be in the agriculture eld.
If you had your own farm, what would it look like? I would have a dairy farm. I would have robots because I like the work but not having to be in the barn every morning and night. Then I could harvest my own crops and do my own eldwork.
What is your favorite dairy treat? Chocolate mint ice cream.
What is your favorite thing to do on the farm during the summer? I like to show my friends around our farm because they don’t live on farms.
What is your favorite memory of working or playing on the farm? When we get to go outside and have water ghts when it’s really hot out.
