Something to call his own Becker reects on rst anniversary of milking cows By Maggie Molitor Staff Intern
PIERZ, Minn. – On June 1, 19-year-old Jared Becker kicked off June Dairy Month by celebrating his rst anniversary of dairy farming. The young dairy farmer milks 50 cows in a tiestall barn that he uses from his parents, Brian and Kelly Becker, in Morrison County near Pierz. He rents 90 acres of land to grow alfalfa and corn and raises his replacement heifers. “I always wanted to do dairy farming,” Becker said. “I grew up helping my neighbors and thought it was fun.” Becker’s days begins at 5:30 a.m. with milking cows. After milking, he feeds his cows, youngstock and beef cattle and then heads to his neighbor’s poultry barn to complete his chores there. This leaves a few hours in the afternoon to work on various tasks like eldwork, maintenance, bedding and mixing feed. His day ends with him back in the barn milking cows. “I knew I wanted to do something with cows, so I bought my beef cattle before I could get dairy cows,” Becker said. Following high school graduation, Becker raised his herd of beef cows and also sided houses. But, he soon realized dairy was his calling. Becker grew up in the dairy in-

For the rst two months, Becker milked his cows in Walcheski’s barn while his parents’ barn was renovated to accommodate the new herd. “We didn’t have too much to x up in the barn,” Becker said. “I am just thankful there is a barn here.” Becker’s parents milked cows for 17 years until they sold their herd in 2012. Now his dad drives truck, crop farms and operates a poultry barn, and his mom works at the area school. The facility, which had not housed cattle in a decade, needed to be cleaned, stalls had to be repaired and drink cups had to be installed. Becker and his family also put in a new manure auger, vacuum pump and bulk tank. “It was mainly cleaning things up and some electrical work,” Becker said. Knowing the challenges that come with starting a career in the dairy industry, Becker is thankful both the opportunities to use his parents’ barn and purchase his uncle’s cattle, and that those assets could remain in the family. While Becker is the sole dairy farmer, getting the cows milked and chores complete is an affair with all hands on deck. Becker’s dad helps him in the winter when work is slow. His brothers – Chris, 26, and Scotty, 16 – and mom help with chores when they can. Becker’s third brother, Zach, 21, helps out when he is home from college, and his sister, Leah, 9, is often found in the barn doing chores or naming her brother’s cows. Becker also enjoys spending quality time with his girlfriend, Jayden Smieja, as she often helps out on the dairy feeding calves and a variety of tasks. The dairyman is appreciative of the assistance and support he receives from his family and is very thankful his dad is close by to offer guidance. “My mom and dad help me out quite a bit,” Becker said. “In exchange, I give them my bull calves to raise out.” With the support of his family, neighbors and other farming mentors, Becker has had a whirlwind of a rst year. He has learned various self-sufcient skills, such as breeding, some herd health work and welding. These skills allow him to cut costs where necessary. “I am very grateful for all the area farmers that have helped out,” Becker said. Becoming a more experienced dairyman allows Becker to envision growth on his farm, and the updated 62-stall barn gives Becker room to do so. “I want to milk more cows and maybe build a new shed for switch cows,” Becker said. Despite his young age and the adversity he faced when starting a career as a dairy farmer in today’s industry, often with doubt from others, Becker is happy with his decision to milk cows. “It is something I really enjoy, and I like being my own boss,” Becker said. “Now, the cows are calving in again, and my rst A.I. calves are being born. It is cool to see how far I’ve gotten.”

Iowa dairy woman heads to Mrs. United States Agriculture contest
Kruse uses crown, sash to advocate By Sherry Newell Contributing Writer
HOLY CROSS, Iowa – Alison Kruse, of Holy Cross, is usually on the management side of a pageant in her role as director of the Dubuque County Fair Queen contest. But this year, she is the one wearing a crown. Kruse is the Iowa and Midwest Mrs. United States Agriculture, one of several titles offered by the Miss United States Agriculture program. The program’s stated goal is to “truly advocate for agriculture by using the crown and sash as an avenue to start conversations.” It is a title for which Kruse’s individual platform is more specic. “I am trying to educate that you don’t have to come from a family farm to be in the agriculture industry,” Kruse said. “You can make it in any industry if you are passionate enough.” That platform reects
Kruse’s background. Raised in the town of Cascade, Kruse was acquainted with, but not involved in the agriculture that surrounded her. At Northern Iowa Community College, she met her husband, Adam Kruse, who farms with his family on a 70-cow dairy. Since then, she has been helping on the farm while also working as a home-based disability team coordinator for Sedgwick. She and Adam have a 2-year-old daughter, Stella. Among those responsibilities, nding the time to advocate has been something of a challenge. “When I rst told Adam I planned to enter the county contest, he was like, ‘OK, I’ll support you,’” Kruse said. “As I continued on, we kind of knew that when I get involved in something, I’m going to go all-out. Our families have really stepped up to watch our daughter (when
I’m gone). Overall, everyone has been great in terms of support.” Her in-laws, Loras and Julie Kruse, also experienced an unusual event on their farm because of her title. Iowa Secretary of Agriculture and Land Stewardship Mike Naig paid a visit to the dairy during what Naig has called his 99-County Tour. “For Adam and his parents, that was really cool,” Kruse said. “None of us had met him before. He was very interesting to visit with.” Kruse’s activities have taken her to Kansas, Missouri, Wisconsin and Illinois but most have been centered around her community. “After all, we milk cows, and we have a little girl,” she said. Kruse has not only visited farms and events where she could communicate about agriculture, but has also focused on community service. She raised money for Noah’s Bandage Project, enough to buy 20,000

kid-themed bandages for the charity based out of Kansas City, Missouri. She also spearheaded a clothing drive with a goal to collect 3,000 items. “It was very rewarding to achieve my goal and donate to those in need in my home county,” Kruse said. Those efforts all helped her accumulate the points needed to earn a designation of Iowa Miss Agriculture Advocacy Ambassador. But visiting farms and leading farm tours is where she learned far more than she already knew about agriculture through dairy farming.
“You can make it in any industry if you are passionate enough.” ALISON KRUSE, IOWA AND MIDWEST MRS. UNITED STATES AGRICULTURE
“It’s crazy what I’ve learned,” she said. “I toured a beef farm, and instead of shavings, they use shredded cardboard for bedding from a plant in Cedar Rapids.” Kruse recruited sponsors to offset the expenses of travel, hotels, entries and clothing. Kruse will compete for a national title in her division June 24-25 in Orlando, Florida. She expects to see seven women in her division and more than 90 involved in the various sections covering all age groups from toddler to those 36 years old and older. Judging includes an introduction, an on-stage question, an interview, photos, formal wear and a state-themed fashion component. Kruse’s parents, husband and daughter will accompany her for a week-long vacation. “It’s the only time I’m getting (Adam) off the farm except for cattle shows and sales,” she said.

Ryan Wolf Employers: Kim, Ted and Scott Wolf Wolf Dairy Bankston, Iowa Dubuque County 250 cows Senior at Western Dubuque High School 18 years old Questions for Kim, Ted and Scott Wolf: Tell us your favorite experience of your daughter helping with chores. One time, early on while working on the farm, Ryan decided to step into the molasses pile in the commodity shed. He learned real quickly how sticky it was and got his boots stuck in the molasses. It was comical watching him try and balance himself, and get out of his boots and back on the cement. It took two of us to get his boots out of the pile. What qualities does your daughter have that benet the farm? He’s a walking record book. If you need to know something about a cow, you can
Ryan Wolf and his rst cousin once removed, Clayton, ll calf boƩles at Wolf Dairy near Bankston, Iowa. Wolf works on the dairy where his aunt and cousins milk 250 cows.
Get to know Ryan Wolf of Bankston, Iowa
ask Ryan rst, and if he doesn’t know, he will nd out ASAP. He knows the genealogy of most of the cows on the farm and can memorize milking records for the cows, knowing latest test weights, fat and protein percentages, and somatic cell count scores. Questions for Ryan Wolf: What are your responsibilities on the farm? My main responsibilities on the farm are the young calves. I do chores in the morning, from about 5:30 a.m. to 6 a.m. I feed calves with another employee before I go to school. After school, milking starts at 4 p.m., but I leave the barn at 4:30 p.m. to feed calves. I use a pasteurizer to serve better quality milk to the calves and grow them stronger and bigger. After I am done feeding calves, I go back to the barn to nish up chores. On the weekends, I also grain the older heifers, which the farm has spread out on other farms. How do you balance school, extracurricular activities and farm chores? I started on the farm in June 2015; it was a way to get me out of the house during summer, and it turned into a great learning experience and employment opportunity for me. At school, I was involved in FFA, FBLA and student council, serving as the president of all three clubs through my senior year. I value my education and put it rst, meaning when it came down to it, when I got busy at school, I had to take time off work for it. How has working on the farm shaped your character?I learned to try new things. I was encouraged to learn from my mistakes, something I am extremely grateful for. My cousins are always there to make sure I get my job done right, but they want me to be independent and learn on my own how to be successful.

What is one thing you have learned from working alongside your parents? I learned to be independent and seek answers on my own. Part of life is seizing your own opportunities and doing it when you are ready. This farm taught me an ability to work on my own, set my own pace and follow
through with everything. I am grateful for all of my supporters on the farm. What are your future plans? I will be attending Iowa State University in the fall, studying pre-veterinary medicine with the hope of getting into the ISU College of Veterinary Medicine. I am also serving on the Iowa FFA State Ofcer Team as the northeast vice president.
