Neugebauer to resign from MDA board SD farmer barely survived a serious health crisis By Jerry Nelson
jerry.n@dairystar.com
DIMOCK, S.D. – After three decades of service, Jim Neugebauer will resign from his post as board chairman of the South Dakota division of Midwest Dairy. He has exited the dairy business due to health issues. “Dairy promotion is in my blood,” Jim said. Jim and his wife, Ellen, milked 65 Holsteins on their farm in Dimock. The Neugebauers have three adult children, Nichole, Larissa and Ben. Ben has been farming with his parents. The Neugebauers sold their cows in May. Jim has many fond memories from his decades of dairy promotion. “I helped operate the Malt Wagon at Dakotafest for many years,” Jim said. “I was able to talk numerous political candidates into posing for milk mustache photos.” The money raised from Malt Wagon sales is used for dairy promotion in the local area. This included such things as providing milk for kids on Santa Claus Days at the local armory and for high school after-prom parties. Beginning in 2004, Jim was an instrumental part of the effort to install milk vending machines in South Dakota schools. “We formed a charitable organization and used donations to fund the placement of milk vending machines in schools,” Jim said. “We have successfully placed milk vending machines in about 70 schools.” Jim also enjoyed attending the Midwest Dairy national meetings and participating in its forums.
“I’m going to miss the forums and networking with other dairy farmers from across the region,” Jim said. “I’m also going to miss being a presenter for our local Ag in the Classroom educational program.” Jim’s health crisis began with a stomachache on the evening of Jan. 12. “I thought that I had eaten some bad chili,” Jim said. “But it soon began to hurt so bad that I asked Ellen to take me to the Mitchell hospital.” Doctors in Mitchell quickly determined that Jim’s condition was critical. Within hours, Jim was transported by air ambulance to a Sioux Falls hospital. It was determined that Jim had suffered a strangulated hernia and perforated bowels. Jim underwent an emergency operation that removed 4 feet of necrotic intestine. The doctors also extracted 7 liters of food and body uids from Jim’s chest cavity. Jim’s recovery was anything but smooth. He endured serious setbacks, including a second surgery to repair his bowels. He was put on a respirator three times. Jim’s family stayed at his side as much as possible. Nichole and her husband, John, ew in from Chicago and spent several weeks in Sioux Falls, often driving to the Neugebauer farm to help with milking and chores. Larissa helped as much as she could, and neighbors assisted with the morning milking and chores. “When he rst got sick, Dad’s lactic acid level was incredibly high,” Larissa said. “A level of two means that you are septic and a four is thought to be lethal. When Dad rst went into the hospital, his lactic acid level was 6.5.” Ellen said he was immediately put on a respirator and could not speak. “We got a spelling board, and he pointed to the letters that spelled ‘tank,’” she said. “We thought that he was trying to say thanks to everyone.” Jim said that was not the case. “I was worried that Ben wouldn’t

Another operation had to be conducted. Larissa said that as Jim’s carbon dioxide levels spiked, he would hallucinate. “He would move his arms in a particular way, and we gured out that he was milking the cows,” Larissa said.
“He often thought that he was oating or that the TV was on the oor or that a cow was in his room. The third time that Dad was put on a ventilator, they gave him a tracheostomy to make it easier to hook him up.” Every time Jim came to, Ellen said he would ask three questions. “Are my cows safe? Is my farm safe? Where am I?” she said. “There were a lot of moments when we weren’t sure if Jim would make it.” Turn to NEUGEBAUER | Page 4

Jim agreed. “I’m lucky to be alive,” he said. Due to coronavirus-related restrictions Larissa said Jim could only have only two visitors at a time when he was in the intensive care unit. “The hardest part about being in the ICU was seeing so many COVID patients dying alone,” Jim said. Jim spent several weeks of his recovery at a longterm acute care facility. “By the time Dad left Select Specialty, he had taught all of the doctors and nurses the secret dairy farmer handshake,” Larissa said. “When they learned that we were from Dimock, they said that they loved Dimock cheese. We went to the Dimock Cheese store to buy some cheese for the nurses, and when we went to pay for it, we were told that it was already taken care of. That’s just one example of the support we received from the community.” On April 5, after 83 days in the hospital, Jim was discharged. Jim said he cannot take anything by mouth; an IV provides all of his hydration and nutrition. The long medical ordeal has left Jim 100 pounds lighter. “We were planning on exiting the dairy business anyway,” Jim said. “We were starting the transition into beef production by breeding our cows to Hereford bulls. After milking cows for 41 years, it was a bittersweet day when the cows left.” Ellen said she is glad the cows did not go to slaughter. “Our cows went to a dairy farm north of Parker, so they are still being milked,” Ellen said. Jim plans to remain active with the MDA until his replacement is nominated. “This past winter when MDA had their annual meeting in Phoenix, I gave the noon luncheon prayer via Zoom from my hospital bed,” Jim said. Despite his ongoing health challenges, Jim remains a farmer to the bone. Larissa said the day after the cows left, Jim learned they had a eld that needed to be worked. “We wrapped his IV lines in (plastic) wrap, and I used the skid loader to lift him up to the tractor cab,” she said. “He was the happiest man in the world as he sat in that cab.” The day that Jim was released from the hospital, his driveway and farmstead were lled with pickups and cars. The vehicles honked in unison, welcoming Jim home. “I don’t know how to say thanks to all the people who volunteered to help or gave money,” Jim said. “The outpouring of support has been very humbling.”

Proud to be a family dairy farm Mohrs cherish years in industry, career of milking cows
of a majority of the chores, including herd health, morning milking and eldwork. Anita is responsible for the calves and bookwork. The family’s mornings begin with Roger milking the herd in a double-11 parlor. Roger and Scott milk together, and then Scott mixes and delivers feed and cleans the stalls afterward. At the same time, Anita is feeding the youngstock. “For as long as I can remember, I’ve fed calves,” Anita said. “I like working outside.” By 5 p.m. each evening, the family gathers for dinner together while high schoolers begin chores and milking. Scott joins the young crew afterward to complete milking. “When we were little, we always helped with chores,” Scott said. Roger agreed. “Everyone had to work and that taught responsibility,” he said. “But because it was just us, we also made sure we always had dinner together.”

NEW ULM, Minn. – When Roger Mohr was a child, he looked across his family’s farm property and always thought the neighboring farm site would be the perfect place to milk cows. Now, decades later, he fullls that dream alongside his wife and children. “You could say I’m proud,” Roger said. “I’m happy we’re doing what we’re doing and that we’ve been successful at it.” Roger and his wife, Anita, and son, Scott, own RAS Dairy Inc. in Brown County near New Ulm. Together, with Roger and Anita’s daughter, Sarah, the family milks 100 cows and farms 350 acres of corn, soybeans, alfalfa, peas and triticale. At 78-years-old, Roger has been farming for 54 years. He purchased the farm site from his dad in 1967, soon before he and Anita were wed. Roger and Scott take care

The Mohr family – (from leŌ) ScoƩ, Roger, Anita and Sarah – milks 100 cows and farms 350 acres of land in Brown County near Sleepy Eye, Minnesota. Roger Mohr began dairy farming 54 years ago. The Mohrs hire high school-aged students for their evening chores, a practice they have done for nearly two decades. While employed, the youth learn responsibility, how to operate machinery and
the reasons for every task as it relates to the farm’s goals. Anita enjoys providing the help with baked goods, and the family has allowed the employees to use their land during hunting seasons.
“You just always want to treat people how you want to be treated,” Anita said. “It might not be a big deal to us, but to them it is.” Turn to MOHRS | Page 6

Foraging into the future.
Roger and ScoƩ Mohr work together on their family farm near New Ulm, Minnesota. The Mohrs built this double-8 parlor in 1997 and expanded it to a double-11 in 2011. Scott agreed. “To us, it’s important we provide this type of opportunity,” he said. “We were all young once and someone had to teach us.” Scott joined his family’s farm shortly after nishing college in 1988. Prior to dairy farming, he worked a few other jobs but being a part of his parents’ operation was a calling. “Dairy farming is always something I wanted to do,” Scott said. “When I was away at school, I took a greater interest in it, especially nutrition. I like working with the animals
more than anything.” Roger, too, had a calling to farm. In 1962, he left the familiar farming community in southern Minnesota to begin military service based at Fort Jackson in Columbia, South Carolina. After a short time in active duty followed by three years in the U.S. Army Reserves, Roger was ready to dairy farm. “By then, I knew I just wanted to farm,” Roger said. ConƟnued from MOHRS | Page 6 milked 27 cows in the site’s original 31-stall stanchion barn. Over the years, they grew the herd and at one point were milking 65 cows in the barn. “We were switching the cows twice because the ones that were rst in the barn returned after milking,” Scott said. Roger agreed. “That took a lot of time,” he said. “But at the same time, I always enjoyed getting into the barn after a day of driving tractor.” In 1997, the family built a 101-stall freestall barn. The Mohrs use the farm’s original barn to house calves in the winter time. For the remainder of the year, the youngstock are housed in individual hutches along a grove of trees. “Building that barn was a big nancial undertaking,” Roger said. “It cost more than what it cost me to purchase the farm.” At the same time, they also built a double-8 parlor; one of the rst that incorporated a drop rail exit system. The parlor was then expanded to its current size in 2011. The Mohrs were in the new barn and parlor for six months before the devastating tornado of 1998. That storm tore a quarter of the roof off the barn. “We were lucky we could still milk yet,” Scott said. “And, we still had a house.” Roger agreed. “People came to help,” he said. “In a crisis, people always come to help.” Throughout the years, the family has made large and small improvements to their dairy. Not only have they replaced nearly every original building on the farm site, they have upgraded machinery and updated the freestall barn with waterbed mattresses. All of these improvements were essential, coupled with Scott’s desire to farm, in the long-term sustainability of the dairy. “If Scott didn’t come back, we wouldn’t still be farming here,” Roger said. “I think we’ve come a long way.” The Mohrs are now one of 30-some dairy farms in Brown County; a stark reality of the times but also an opportunity for the family to be a staple in their community. They often welcome guests to their dairy – family members of past and current employees and international visitors who come to the area for a traditional German celebration. “We’ve had people come from Austria and Germany to see our farm. I speak German, so it’s easy to communicate,” Roger said. “It makes us feel good people think of us when they want to see a dairy farm.” Scott agreed. “People like to see and learn about our dairy,” he said. “Here, we’ve always kept it personal and about family, and we plan to keep it like that.”

Drought Relief application window now open
Apply by July 6 for up to $7,500 reimbursement
St. Paul, MN: Minnesota livestock farmers and specialty crop producers can now apply for up to $7,500 per farm in reimbursement for expenses incurred due to last year’s drought, through the Minnesota Department of Agriculture’s (MDA) 2021 Agricultural Drought Relief Program (ADRoP). “Last year’s drought caused hardship for lots of farmers, and we want to get help to them so they can pay a few bills,” MDA Commissioner Thom Petersen said. “Whether it was buying feed, installing irrigation, or something else, we know there were a lot of extra costs last year that we’re hoping to offset with this opportunity.” The Minnesota Legislature appropriated $8.1 million for ADRoP, which will reimburse farm op-
erators for drought-related expenses incurred after June 1, 2021, and before May 23, 2022. Farms must be located in a county designated by the United States Department of Agriculture as a primary natural disaster area after July 19, 2021 and before Jan. 1, 2022, or in a county contiguous to a designated county. All Minnesota counties except Goodhue, Rice, Wabasha, and Winona are eligible. Eligible expenses for specialty crop producers include water handling equipment; water hauling; wells; irrigation equipment; replacement plants, seeds, or seedlings; additional hired labor; farmers’ market fees for canceled markets; and more. Eligible expenses for livestock farmers include water-related expenses; feed-related expenses; custom bailing; equipment rental; livestock transportation; livestock pond dredging; cover crop, pasture, or forage replanting; fencing; grazing rights; additional hired labor; and more. In addition to a completed application, you must
submit an IRS Form W-9 and a list of all droughtrelated expenses. Documentation of these expenses does not need to be submitted with the application, but you must be able to make it available for examination if requested. If the total amount requested from all eligible applicants during the initial application period exceeds the total amount of funds available, all applications will be pro-rated. Applicants are highly encouraged to submit their application through the online grants management system to ensure it is received in a timely manner. Applications completed online or emailed must be received by 5 p.m. on July 6. Mailed applications must be postmarked July 6 and received no later than July 12 to be considered. More information, including the application, is available on the MDA’s drought relief page. Farm operators can email drought@state.mn.us or call the Grants Line at 651-201-6500 with any questions.

done and how much help there is on that day. Some days I scrape the barns; other days I help with milking or feeding the calves or putting bedding in for the heifers or doing eldwork. I work full time on the farm now, so I get to do a lot more than I used to.
Questions for employer: Tell us your favorite experience of Andrew helping with chores. I don’t have a favorite single experience, but I enjoy seeing the variety of skills Andrew has mastered – from milking cows and feeding and caring for calves to operating trucks, tractors and loaders.
When did you begin helping on the farm? I began working on the farm in November 2020. Originally, my brother worked there, and I tagged along here and there. We started talking about me working there too. He asked Brian if he would give me a job, and Brian said, “Well, there’s always work to get done so whenever you’re ready, give me a call.” I started at very minimum hours and just slowly got into everything.
What qualities does Andrew have that benet the farm? Andrew is dedicated and hardworking. He’s always willing to help to make sure the job gets How do you balance school, extracurdone and is done properly. ricular activities and farm chores? I actually found it kind of hard to balance Questions for youth: school and work because I always wantWhat are your responsibilities on the ed to be on the farm learning and doing farm? My responsibilities on the farm stuff and getting better at everything on vary depending on what needs to get the farm. Even though I never really had much homework, I never wanted to do it because I would rather be in a tractor or chasing cows around. How has working on the farm shaped your character? It has pushed me to get a better work ethic and know when it’s time to mess around and when it’s time to work. You can play when the work is nished. What do you love most about farm life? I love the fact that you never know what’s going to happen, whether it’s breakdowns or chasing the cows through the elds because they got out. On a farm, STACEY SMART/DAIRY STAR you can nd out what Andrew Treptow scrapes the barns during milking at the unexpected really Barlass Farms near Janesville, Wisconsin. is.
WHICH BARN IS BEST FOR YOUR HERD?
Birds just love this barn. The webs in these trusses are easy nest areas for birds. They also restrict air flow which leads to poor ventilation and moisture buildup in the building.

The arched rafters create a more open barn allowing better ventilation. Also since there are no open webs in the trusses, there are no places for birds to nest.

Treptow has been working on the farm since November 2020 and became a full-Ɵme employee aŌer graduaƟng from high school this spring. What is one thing you have learned from working alongside your employer? I’ve learned how much you need to know about the cows and how much you need to understand them. For example, little changes in their diets can be fatal or make them sick. There are also random things that can get to
cows that you might never have thought about. What are your future plans? I am going to work on the farm for a while, and then I would like to go to school for heavy equipment operation. I am not sure where or when I’d like to do that.

MOSES announces name change to Marbleseed
Marbleseed is the new name for the organization formerly known as the Midwest Organic and Sustainable Education Service (MOSES), effective June 3, 2022. “Marbleseed is a prairie plant native to the Midwest. Its deep taproot and self-seeding nature speak to the resiliency, adaptability, and strong community networks needed in the organic farming movement today,” says Lori Stern, Executive Director of Marbleseed. In 2021, the Midwest Organic and Sustainable Education Service (MOSES) received a grant from McGufn Creative Design, a Chicago-based creative services rm, in support of the organization’s long-desired quest to rebrand. After deep conversations amongst the staff and Board of Directors, “Marbleseed” emerged as the new name for MOSES, along with the tagline farmer-led, rooted in organic. MOSES, now Marbleseed, was rst incorporated in 1995, after six years of growing what is now known as the largest organic farming conference in the United States. In 2023, Marbleseed will be holding its 34th annual Organic Farming Conference in La Crosse, Wisconsin. Throughout the year, Marbleseed’s free and low-cost farmer-led events, trainings, and resources are helping to grow the Midwest’s organic and sustainable farming movement and support thriving farm businesses. With a new name and logo, a lot is changing at Marbleseed, but Lori makes clear that one thing remains the same, “Marbleseed remains committed to our organization’s founding mission: to support farmers in making the transition to organic and sustainable farming systems that are ecologically sound, economically viable, and socially just through farmer-led events, educational resources and community connection.”

Quality forages from the ground up Murty provides steps to a healthy program By Abby Wiedmeyer abby.w@dairystar.com
WISCONSIN DELLS, Wis. – There are many factors that go into producing quality feed for dairy cows. While attention is given to planting and harvesting, Steve Murty believes it is important to also look at soil health and the growing phase as well as the economics of doing so. “We have to make sure the path that you’re going down to meet your goals as a producer is being done economically with some common sense,” Murty said. Murty is a forage products specialist with Vita Plus and presented at the company’s Midwest Dairy Conference June 15 in Wisconsin Steve Murty Dells. Vita Plus Murty believes in the importance of a soil health assessment to identify the quality of the soil on a farm. “There is a symbiosis relationship between the root of the plant and the fungus of the soil,” Murty said. “They do relate, and having this system is going to increase the ability of the plant to pick up nutrients.” To measure soil health, there is a process called slate testing. This can be done at the eld location by taking two cups of water with a metal screen at the top. The soil clot gets submerged into the water, and that water rushes in to ll the pore space. The soil that has been continually tilled will have less of the glue and the pectin to hold it together; it is going to start aking off and dropping off into the water. “Imagine having a quick 2-inch rain in a half an hour on a soil that has not been tilled and has good structure against a soil that has been tilled,” Murty said. “All conventional thinking was that we needed tillage in order to have good soil drainage. That’s actually reversed, and we’ve ipped that on its ear in the last few years.” Long-term grassland, like property coming out of the United States Department of Agriculture’s Conservation Reserve Program, has a better water inltration rate because the soils are healthier with better structures, said Murty. However, no-till farming practices are not a feasible management practice for all acres. “I’m not saying tillage is bad,” Murty said. “If you use them correctly at the right time, throughout the year, there is a place for them in the whole system.”
Looking at forage growth of corn, Murty said some of the critical things taking place during the growth of the corn plant are ear set. “The old saying is that we don’t want a corn plant to ever have a bad day,” Murty said. When experimenting on how to control the quality of the corn silage, Murty found that if a drought scenario was introduced in the young corn plant, the amount of lignin and negative feed that plant will produce in its lifetime will be reduced. “Instead, there will be an increase in the digestible nutrients per acre just by simply turning on the pivot differently throughout that corn plant’s life cycle,” Murty said. It is also important to look at the reproduction phase which occurs after tassel time. “We go through ve phases in 28 days, and the last phase takes 28 days more,” Murty said. “The reproduction process takes a total of about 56 days.” That last 28 days adds 55% of dry matter accumulation which is the starch in the feed. “When you’re thinking about when that custom harvester is going to get there and maybe you’re trying to get 40% starch,” Murty said. “That might be as signicant as him starting on a Sunday instead of on a Monday of next week.” Marty said a problem some farmers in the Midwest have seen in the last couple years is tar spot. “It’s not been detected to produce other negatives to your feed,” Murty said. “Tar spot goes in and terminates the plant earlier than you would harvest, and you lose your moisture, you lose your feed quality, and you lose your yield.” Murty said the best way to combat tar spot is simply to harvest early while as much moisture, quality and yield can be salvaged. When thinking about the last hay harvest, it pays to look at winter survival. A question was asked if the last cutting of hay should be taken Sept. 5 or Sept. 20. “We’re worried about sending that alfalfa plant off to a good hibernation for the winter with a somewhat full fuel tank,” Murty said. “So, we look at what’s occurring below the ground.” When alfalfa is cut, it begins growing again and pulls from its reserves. Alfalfa does not start recharging until almost four weeks after the initial cut, then it starts getting the recharge and relling the fuel tank underground. “This is what’s critical over winter to come out at spring time with a good rst cutting,” Murty said. “That’s when knowing how to shut the cutter down, say Sept. 5, and allowing that plant six to eight good weeks of lling that fuel tank before going into winter time. That’s pretty critical for winter survival.”
