Family ships milk to Ellsworth Co-op Creamery for over a century
By Abby Wiedmeyer abby.w@dairystar.com
ELLSWORTH, Wis. –
When the loaded milk truck leaves the Hauschildt farm, the product is delivered to Ellsworth Cooperative Creamery, just like it has been since 1910. Jim Hauschildt’s greatgrandfather was one of the founding farmers behind the creamery and worked hard to build a cooperative and a farm that would serve generations to come.
Today, Hauschildt and his son, Hayden, are the fourth and fth generations to milk cows at the farm and dependably ship the milk to Ellsworth Cooperative Creamery.
“I still have the original stock certicate that was issued to my great-grandfather in 1910,” Hauschildt said. “That’s what built rural America – people working together to get things done.”
Hauschildt and his son milk 113 cows on their Pierce County dairy near Ellsworth. Most of the cows are housed in a freestall barn, while the overow occupies the tiestall barn where the milking is done. Fa-
ther and son milk together and combine efforts to get the rest of the chores done with their wife and mother, Diane.
Hauschildt said that farming has changed a lot since he started. His mother died of cancer when he was 16, and his father died in a car accident when Hauschildt was 20. He was on his own to run the farm from that young age and has kept an open mind about how to manage things to remain protable.
Cows are fed a total mixed ration that consists mostly of corn silage that has been interplanted with sorghum sudangrass. The Hauschildts also raise cereal grains and triticale that is interplanted with Italian rye. They quit growing and feeding alfalfa and hay ve years ago.
“Hay is a losing battle,” Hauschildt said. “Hay is the only crop that you worry about 12 months out of the year, and then while trying to harvest, you’re always checking the sky and looking when to cut and ghting the weather.”
Hauschildt said that although it can be difcult to be at the mercy of the market when it comes to purchasing
soybean meal, he believes he is achieving a higher-yielding crop with what he grows. They hire a custom harvester to make the crop, which helps simplify the operation as well.
Hauschildt’s dad made improvements to the farm while they worked together, and Hauschildt has continued to upgrade in his time. Before his dad passed away, an addition
was added to the barn. Since taking over, Hauschildt has updated equipment and built silos, and he and Hayden have grown the herd to its current size.
While the pair have worked hard over the years, they make sure to nd time away from the farm too. Hauschildt attends hard rock concerts in Minneapolis, Minnesota, with his
daughters who live there, and Hayden enjoys traveling to cattle shows and even doing cattle judging. His pride and joy is the Brown Swiss breed.
Hauschildt said it is important to nd a balance.

on you – it’s so easy to fall into the work, work, work mentality – and that doesn’t make you better,” Hauschildt said. “It makes your farm worse.”
Being in close proximity to the University of Wisconsin-River Falls has opened opportunities for hired help in the past from college students looking for farm experience. This allowed Hauschildt and his son to develop interests off the farm and to take a break once in a while. Hayden was also involved in sports in high school where Hauschildt was involved as a coach.
Now that it seems to be getting harder to nd help, the family is looking at downsizing the herd to allow for more cash cropping and fewer cattle chores. Hauschildt said, instead of spending money on expanding, he has forged himself a fund to retire on when he is 62, which will also offer a future
for his son with the farm inheritance.
“I planned well for the end of my career because I never really believed the farm was mine,” Hauschildt said. “I believe it’s God’s farm and he chose me to be a caretaker of his creation.”
Hauschildt said he believes farming was better when he rst took over in 1985. It has been harder to save money and continue to make upgrades as time has gone on, but he said he still loves the farm life. Hauschildt can remember his dad telling him that farming with his son was the best year in farming of his life, a sentiment that Hauschildt now relates to.
“I know why my dad felt the way he did because I feel it too,” Hauschildt said. “It’s been a struggle for the small farm over the last 15 years, but it’s been worth it because I’m farming with my son.”

A labor shift
Precision Dairy Conference includes discussion of automation, technology
By Amy Kyllo amy.k@star-pub.com
BLOOMINGTON, Minn. – Implementing new technology can bring a plethora of decisions, opportunities and changes to a dairy farm.
The Precision Dairy Conference June 20 in Bloomington presented attendees with several speakers discussing automation and labor on dairy farms.
The rst presenter was Matt Lange, an independent dairy business consultant. Lange said the rst step when organizing a decision on new technology is to assess it. Often, producers see technology as reducing costs from labor.
Lange takes a different view.
“Technology is just a different form of labor,” he said. “It’s dressed differently.”
Seeing technology this way helps producers understand technology as shifting labor costs to a different column of the spreadsheet such as an activity collar cost replacing vet work.
Often, lowering labor costs is erroneously seen as synonymous with protability.
“There’s … almost 0% correlation between labor costs and protability,” Lange said. “Just because you have the lowest labor costs on a dairy does not guarantee that you’re going to be protable.”
Instead, Lange focuses on comparing the return on investment for output from labor to output from technology.
“Can I get more out of the technology than I did the labor?” he said. “(Can) technology provide improvement and margin and consistency?”
When producers are considering technology, Lange said they should think about how it specically can be implemented on their operation and how it will benet their output.
“I always have a healthy skepticism when someone is selling technology to the dairies that I work with,” he said. “I want to know what it is going to do for this business. ... I want to know how it’s going to benet us here and if the producer is ready for it.”
One thing to consider, Lange said, is how much of the technology is actually going to be used and implemented. Also, new technology shifts more management work onto the managers.
Ultimately, Lange focuses on productivity versus efciency when it comes to labor and technology.
“If you’re a salesperson, hang your hat on productive,” he said. “Efciency is really, really hard to attain. ... It’s really important to be cautious about efciency. It sounds good, it’s sexy, but we have to be able to achieve productivity.”
Dairy farmer Chad Carlson of Willmar has seen his labor costs stay consistent after switching to a 60-stall rotary robotic system to milk 1,800 cows.
“It’s redistributing labor and training people to do things more hands off,” he said.
Carlson has found that more skilled labor is required to manage the robotic system.

Andy Lenkaitis, herd management systems engineer at GEA and dairy farmer who uses a robotic milking system on his farm, wants technology to empower and help employees in their jobs.
“We can improve labor,” Lenkaitis said. “Add some automations, make their tasks easier, so that they have ... (the ability) to look at the cows and make sure they’re making the right decisions.”
Though Carlson has had consistent labor costs, one of the robotic dairies represented had seen labor costs go down. Nathan Brandt, of Grantsburg, Wisconsin, has 975 cows milked with 16 Lely robots. Brandt said his labor costs were reduced by $1 per hundredweight with robots. Brandt credits some of these savings to his farm’s complete in-house maintenance of the robots.
When it comes to turnover, Jared Feltz, of Stevens Point, Wisconsin, has gone two years without employee turnover since installing a partially robotic system. His farm uses box robots which look into his operation’s on-site farm store. Today, 200 cows are milked in a parlor and the other 480 are milked by robots. Since adding the robotic system, Feltz has reduced his labor from nine employees to four employees who are in charge of milking in the parlor and keeping an eye on the robots.
For Brandt, besides reduced labor costs, a beauty of robots has been being able to allow the cows to have their normal routines without human disturbance. His setup has two robots in each L-shaped pen and uses sort gates. This allows their
operation to separate animals for care, such as hoof trimming, without disturbing the entire pen.
“Once we got out of the way of the cows and let them be cows, they produced like crazy,” Brandt said.
Brandt’s setup also has reduced the distance his cows have to walk and has eliminated extensive time in a holding pen. Brandt said a cow milking 150 pounds of milk can visit the robot four times and spend just four minutes in the box each time.
“That’s 23 and a half hours to be a cow,” Brandt said. “I couldn’t get her up to the parlor ... the old way once.”
Brandt has seen signicant improvement to his dairy in multiple areas since installing robots in 2018. Their cull rate has dropped from 42% to between 28%30%. Also, his animal health costs have been cut in half.
“Those rumination collars are a big saving grace,” Brandt said. “You know what protocols are working and what needs to be tweaked.”
For dairy farmers looking to upgrade their systems, Lange emphasized the importance of debt structuring before bringing in new technology. He said producers should make sure that the loan payments and interest costs of technology per hundredweight are less than the labor and productivity gains to give farmers liquidity to deal with the unexpected.

A renovation revitalizes youngstock
The Van Heel family of Rainbow Acres LLC near Swanville, Minnesota, hosted a University of Minnesota Extension Dairy Field Day July 19, 2018, to demonstrate how they set up their calves for lifelong success. The family, which milked 1,100 cows and raised all of their replacement heifers, had renovated an old chicken barn into a group housing facility for their calves. The remodel included the addition of automatic calf feeders. David Van Heel said, with the new setup, their calves were the healthiest they had ever been.

Dodge County woman injured by bull
Tena Borchardt faced the unpredictability of animal behavior when she was attacked by a 2-year-old Holstein herd bull July 18, 2018. Borchardt and her husband James milked 90 cows on their farm near Clyman, Wisconsin. That day, Borchardt was letting the cows out at 3 p.m. before milking when the incident happened. Although no one witnessed the attack, it appeared she was pushed down and across the concrete yard, being picked up and thrown several times as well. Although very bruised and suffering from a severe concussion, Borchardt had no broken bones and was expected to make a slow, but full recovery.
Keeping up with the industry
By July 2018, Fred and Mike Broker were milking 140 cows at their newly upgraded dairy that had been remodeled over the previous winter. The father and son duo, who had milked in a double-6 parlor, were now milking in a swing-12 parlor and using an extension they had added to an open-front heifer shed as a transition barn for their bred heifers and dry cows. They also were utilizing an expansion of their freestall barn as maternity and hospital areas as well as housing for fresh and special needs animals, the expansion adding an additional 48 feet to the 93- by 144-foot barn. Both Brokers said the improvements saved on work time and far exceeded their expectations.

From farmhouse to beach house
Paul and Peggy Walker, who milked 34 cows on their farm near River Falls, Wisconsin, said they had never won anything before, but that changed when Peggy was the winner of a smart home in Jacksonville Beach, Florida, along with a GMC Terrain Denali vehicle and $100,000, through an HGTV giveaway contest. The home, about 2,400 square feet, was fully furnished and had covered porches, decks and a swimming pool. Friends had told the Walkers to meet them for dinner at Fabulous Fern’s in St. Paul, Minnesota, where they were ambushed with by HGTV’s team, which announced the Walkers’ win and lmed the event. Peggy said she and Paul were going to take their time in deciding their next steps after winning the potentially life-changing prize.
The blind side
In 2013, Jeff Nelson was practically a medical miracle as he raised heifers on the Nelsons’ dairy farm near Clark, South Dakota. After Type 1 diabetes caused him to permanently lose his eyesight at the age of 30, require a kidney transplant from his wife Mary in 2006, and receive a pancreas transplant in 2007, Nelson was nally declared free of diabetes. Once he regained his health, Nelson turned his attention to raising quality calves. By 2013, he was caring for 25 calves and was nishing 50 steers in the Nelsons’ feedlot – handling bedding,
watering calves and feeding milk replacer. Without his sight, Nelson was using touch and smell to detect any illness in his animals.

Schoons earn top honors with two herds
Dave and Harvey Schoon were operating three separate herds for a total of about 700 head of cattle near Verndale, Minnesota. Two of those herds earned the top two spots on the 2002 Minnesota DHIA High Herd Honor Roll. Harvey Schoon credited their herds’ successes to careful breeding. The Schoons’ top herd, called Blue Horizon and consisting of 63 cows, recorded a rolling herd average of 34,227 with 1,381 in fat and 1,067 in protein for 2002.
Recent tornado leaves
Janesville farm in shambles
An F-2 tornado with wind speeds up to 150 mph dropped on the dairy farm of Gary Bade July 15, 2003, as he huddled in his home’s basement with his 5-year-old daughter. The storm tore the roof off the house, the loft off the milking parlor and branches off many of the property’s trees. Two calves were lost and some work was required to clear large branches out of the parlor. However, the family was physically unharmed, and with the help of neighbors, Bade was able to milk his 55 cows the next morning – although he said the cows were confused by the lack of a roof over their heads.
