Calf care to cow success

DaBru Dairy credits automated feeders for health, performance By Maggie Molitor Staff Intern

PARKER, S.D. – Achieving a high genomic herd starts well before the cows enter the parlor. DaBru Dairy has found their success by laying a strong foundation of calf care and management with an automated calf feeding system. DaBru Dairy was among tour stops for those attending the National Holstein Convention June 29 in Sioux Falls. The tour showcased the dairy’s automated calf feeders and high genomic herd. “Since putting in the Lance Haase automated feeders, we have noticed better growth and allaround higher achieving calves,” said Lance Haase, manager of the calf raising and facilities. “Ultimately, those calves are making more productive cows.” Haase dairy farms alongside his father, Bruce, and uncle, Dustin. Together, they milk 600 cows in a single-14 straight parlor and farm 6,000 acres. Four years ago, DaBru Dairy built the calf facility and put in the automat-

ed calf feeding system. The structure can house 80 calves at a time with stalls for four calves to eat simultaneously. Before building the new facility, calves were raised in individual hutches. Haase recognizes the benets he has experienced since transitioning to group housing. “The calves are way less timid,” Haase said. “I see them perform way better when they interact with each other. They are less scared around us and seem happier all around.” Along with the positives of calves’ changing demeanor, DaBru Dairy has seen benets in calf health and performance because of the information they receive from the automated feeding machine. With an ear tag sensor, Haase is informed when a calf may be sick, how many visits each calf makes to the feeder, which calves are not nishing their portions, and whether calves could be fed more to increase their rate of gain. “The machine knows the calf is sick before the calf does,” Haase said. “Anyone can help manage the calves because it takes all of the guessing or needing to know calf behavior out of the equation.” For certain calves, such as the show calves and higher performing calves, the automated feeders can alter the individual portion size to increase their feeding curve. Haase has found this feature to be

especially helpful with the Wagyu beef calves they are raising. Calves can be in the same pen despite differing growth rates, breed or being show animals. The Holstein calves are weaned around 70 days and the beef calves around 80. Haase credits the automated calf feeder in allowing DaBru Dairy to compete with the large dairies that send their calves to heifer raisers in southern

states. “No one can raise a heifer better than you,” Haase said. “With the right resources, you can get the ball rolling because you as the farmer know the exact plans you have for the animal.” The tour wrapped up with displaying cows DaBru Dairy has developed by giving extra attention to detail surrounding youngstock, calf facilities and genetic selection.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – One of the stops on the Western Ways Farm Tour a part of the National Holstein Convention June 29 was Shannon Dairy at Winfred. Shannon Dairy is operated by the Shannon Hutterite Colony, a diversied farming operation that includes some 5,000 acres of cropland. Shannon Dairy began using a robotic milking system in April 2017. The facility started with four robots that could milk up to a total of 240 head. This spring, Shannon Dairy added two more robots to expand their milking herd to 360 head. “We planned our facility with this expansion in mind,” said Adam Wipf, manager of Shannon Dairy. “All of the concrete and the infrastructure for the two additional robots were put in place when we built the barn.” The dairy barn at Shannon Dairy is constructed of precast concrete slabs. Cow comfort was a top priority of the barn’s design. A steel roof with 16 inches of blown-in insulation in the ceiling, tunnel ventilation and automated sprinklers keep the cows cool on the hottest summer days. Free stall alleys are covered with thick rubber mats, giving cows better traction while reducing injuries and foot discomfort. A squad of Lely Discovery robots constantly patrol the alleys, keeping the cows’ walkways free of manure. The facilities at Shannon Dairy also include a calf nursery that features automatic calf feeders. The rolling herd average at Shannon Dairy currently clocks in at 28,000 pounds of milk with a 4% butterfat and 3.3% protein content. When Shannon Dairy decided it was time to grow their milking herd, they purchased two used robotic milkers from a dairyman who was retiring. The pen of free

stalls that would house Shannon Dairy’s expanded milking herd had been occupied by their growing heifers. The heifers were moved to an offsite location to make room for the additional lactating animals. “We drove up to the dairy farm where the guy was selling the robots, picked the robots up, took them home and set them in place at our farm,” Wipf said. “We did most of the work ourselves. … The biggest challenge of adding the two robots was the delay in obtaining some of the critical materials that we needed.” Wipf said they have been happy with the performance of the milking robots. “They have proven to be quite reliable,” Wipf said. “The robots are much like any other piece of farm equipment. If you stay on top of maintenance, they will give you less trouble and will last for a long time.” Shannon Dairy also takes advantage of the latest technology when it comes to the growth and genetic advancement of their herd. “We do genomic testing to identify our top animals,” Wipf said. “We ush the best cattle in our herd and have been implanting embryos that haven’t been frozen. Our conception rate with embryos has been roughly the same as when we service our animals with articial insemination.” Dale and Barb Zimmerman, who operate a registered Holstein dairy farm at Lancaster, Pennsylvania, participated in the tour that included the stop at Shannon Dairy. The Zimmermans chatted with Wipf about their shared German heritage and anything and everything regarding the Holstein breed. “This is an amazing facility,” Dale Zimmerman said. “It’s all very top of the line. We are impressed by Shannon Dairy’s focus on cow comfort and how calm things are in their barn.”

Big data for each cow

Experts discuss value of information for farms By Jennifer Coyne jenn@dairystar.com

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Adapting and using technology appropriately for each cow is critical when gathering data and acting on it for the betterment of a dairy. Industry experts shared guidance based on their experiences with new technology and data with dairy farmers during the Data and Innovation Summit June 30 in Sioux Falls. “As an industry, we have the dilemma of two ways to think about decision making,” Dr. Jason Osterstock said. “There’s intuition which is steeped in tradition and heritage, and then there’s data-driven which we practice a lot in milk recording, herd recording.” Osterstock, with Zoetis, presented “Unlocking the power of data for the hardest working cows in the business” during the summit. The power of cross-referencing data Since farms are managed with a whole-herd approach, Osterstock gave examples of how technology and data derived from such technology help farmers make more informed decisions for each individual cow. At the same time, the whole herd can be kept in mind when considering the long-term goals of the farm. “At the time of my training in preventative medicine herd health, the individual cow wasn’t a fad but it was, fundamentally, the approach,” said the veterinarian. “As herd sizes expanded, we didn’t have the luxury of practicing individual medicine when thinking about managing populations. Twenty years later, we’re driving back to individual cows with technology.” He cautioned the use of data from specic technologies for only the obvious purposes. “It’s imperative we break down the silos in our data,” Osterstock said. “Don’t think of genetic technologies for genetic data, parlor for parlor. We need to think about how this data comes together for a data ecosystem.” For example, Osterstock spoke of using genomic information for productivity but also tracking incidence of disease survival in a herd. There is opportunity to make appropriate decisions knowing the accuracy of genomic predictions, particularly when comparing high and low genomic animals. Osterstock’s presentation showed stark differences between high and low genomic animals regarding mastitis and displaced abomasum. “Those predictions are almost scary at how well they work,” Osterstock said. “If you start to see a DA, from a genetic perspective, you should not be getting DAs; that’s the yellow canary that says there’s a problem there.” Using such information in vast ways allows farmers to proactively manage their herds while considering both genetic and environmental risk factors. Know how to use the data Having a plethora of information can lead a dairy farm in the right direction, but using that information poorly can be detrimental to the business. “Unfortunately, if data is used incorrectly, bad things happen,” Dr. Michael Overton said. “Maybe you’re looking at the wrong data and intervening with a problem that doesn’t exist or you fail to intervene with a problem that could be xed.” Overton, with Zoetis, explained how to appropriately use data in his summit presentation, “Do’s and don’ts of interpreting farm data: Avoiding common data mistakes.” Before farmers are ready to evaluate the data, they should rst formulate a question. This will allow data to be collected and trends to be reviewed before developing an action plan with farm consultants such as the nutritionist or veterinarian. Overton warned of variations in the data sets. “It is the bane of my existence,” he said. “It creates clouding when interpreting what’s happening in the herd’s performance. We have to make sure we can ascertain what we measure represents what the population is doing.” Dairy farmers should also be cautious of bias in their data. For example, a selection bias was presented when asking whether older cows make more milk. Overton told of a case of 15,000 cows followed over ve years. The surviving cows gave more milk each lactation and it increased with the average population.

“We weren’t comparing apples to apples because cows dropped off with each lactation,” Overton said. “Yes, older cows made more milk, but what we observed is selection bias and keeping better animals around longer.” Averages also do not tell the whole story of a herd. Overton gave the example of Michael Jordan walking into a bar during happy hour. “Every person instantly becomes a millionaire, on average,” he said. “In reality, the average net worth could be $85,000, but one outlier changed the perspective of what you would interpret the average to be.” Considering some of the ways data can be misinterpreted, Overton also stressed the importance of reviewing industry benchmarks and other farms’ data points. He said milk production and reproduction can easily be benchmarked with values consistent across the industry, but other values vary greatly between facilities.

The same goes for treatments. “The reality is that each herd had a reason to make those decisions,” Overton said. “Looking at the historical references on the farm will give a conscious insight to the right decision.” With available technology in the industry, the data holds a wealth of potential for dairy farmers to further their success. “Farm data is a collection of bits of information used to improve the herd and farm,” Overton said. “By itself, it’s largely useless. Look at it all before taking corrective action.” Osterstock agreed. “Be vigilant and optimistic in what you can do,” he said. “Exert inuence, be creative; there’s a lot of great stuff coming that will fundamentally change the way we dairy.”

Winona County Fair provides a chance for memories Verthein family shows eight animals By Kate Rechtzigel kate.r@dairystar.com

ST. CHARLES, Minn. − Each year, the Verthein family looks forward to showing animals and making memories at the Winona County Fair. “I like being with other people who enjoy showing cows,” Kylie Verthein said. “It makes it fun when you get to compete against your friends, and you don’t get sad when you lose because you’re happy your friends won.” Kylie, 17, was joined by her brothers – Tyler, 15, and Trysten, 13 – at the fair July 6-10 in St. Charles. They are the children of Greta and Ben Verthein. Their dad milks 650 cows with their grandfather, Steve, near Altura. “We mainly milk Holsteins, and that’s why we show Holsteins,” Kylie said. On the farm, the siblings are involved with feeding calves, hauling manure, bedding, feeding and watering their show animals, and doing any other chores that are needed. “We keep the show animals separate as we want them to look their best all year-round,” Kylie said. When Verthein siblings are at the fair, extra chore responsibilities are left up to their father and grandfather.

This year, the Vertheins brought ve dairy animals. Kylie showed a senior 2-year-old, which was awarded grand champion, and a summer yearling. Tyler showed a junior 2-year-old, which was second in its class, and Trysten showed a junior 2-year-old cow and a winter yearling. “I love the animals, the fair and the experience,” Trysten said. Kylie agreed. “My dad usually picks the animals out for us, and then we work with them before the fair,” she said. “Most of them walk really well, so that’s denitely a positive side to it. No one wants to bring a bad walking animal to the fair.” To train their animals, the Vertheins start in April by putting them on halters and then slowly working up to walking the animals on halters and washing them. “The main reason is to be around them and get them used to people,” Kylie said. “You don’t want to do it two weeks before the fair.” The siblings also took three dairy steers to the fair, one for each of them. Kylie has shown at the fair for seven years; Tyler and Trysten have shown six and ve years, respectively. During this time, they have built up a number of memories. “I really like competing and seeing how good I can do with the animal that

I’ve worked with for a while,” Tyler said. Kylie agreed. “I like being around my friends,” she said. “Even though waking up early is awful, seeing everyone else, playing cards and showing makes up for it.” Kylie’s favorite memory from this year took place as the Vertheins were getting their animals ready for the show July 8. “We had a friend helping us walk one of our animals into the barn, and he fell into the water bucket,” she said. “It splashed all over our cows, and everyone was freaking out and trying to get it cleaned up before the show.” For Trysten, however, his favorite

memory was being able to connect with a consumer. “An older lady came and asked if she could pet our animals,” he said. “The smile on her face was the best; she was really excited.” Throughout the rest of the summer, the Vertheins plan to take their show animals to a few more open shows before attending the state fair at the end of August. “It just helps to give them more experience,” Kylie said. Kylie will be bringing her senior 2-year-old to the state fair. Tyler will be bringing his junior 2-year-old, and Trysten will be bringing his winter yearling.

My favorite chore is feeding bottles because I like the calves. My least favorite is milking because sometimes the cows pee and poop on me. What is your favorite animal on your farm? Aurora. She is a Red and White Holstein calf who is 4 days old. We also have two dogs and a lot of cats that I like too. What is your favorite subject in school? Art. I like art, and I have a whole basket of art in my house. What is something you have learned in school recently? In art class, we learned how to make a bunny from a bag. What do you want to be when you grow up? When I’m 16, I want to be a Walmart cashier, but when I grow up, I want to be a vet for pets. My grandpa is a vet for cows, but I want to help pets. If you had a farm, describe what it would look like. I would have a red shed for hay and a green shed for tractors. I would have bunkers for the cow feed, a little calf barn and a lean-to for calves. I would have a big milking parlor and a pasture. Also, there would be a place for steers

and the bull for when they are not in the pasture. What is your favorite dairy treat? Chocolate ice cream. What is your favorite game to play at home and on the farm? I like to make it rain with the hose. What do you like to do during recess? My friends and I play with our imaginary friends together.
